The 1.9 billion metric tons of steel globally manufactured in 2023 justify the steel industry’s pivotal role in modern society’s growth. Considering the rapid development of countries that have not fully taken part in the global market, such as Africa, steel production is expected to increase in the next decade. However, the environmental burden associated with steel manufacturing must be mitigated to achieve sustainable production, which would align with the European Green Deal pathway. Such a burden is associated both with the GHG emissions and with the solid residues arising from steel manufacturing, considering both the integrated and electrical routes. The valorisation of the main steel residues from the electrical steelmaking is the central theme of this work, referring to the steel electric manufacturing in the Dalmine case study. The investigation was carried out from two different points of view, comprising the action of a plasma electric reactor and a RecoDust unit to optimize the recovery of iron and zinc, respectively, being the two main technologies envisioned in the EU-funded research project ReMFra. This work focuses on those preliminary steps required to detect the optimal recipes to consider for such industrial units, such as thermodynamic modelling, testing the mechanical properties of the briquettes produced, and the smelting trials carried out at pilot scale. However, tests for the usability of the dusty feedstock for RecoDust are carried out, and, with the results, some recommendations for pretreatment can be made. The outcomes show the high potential of these streams for metal and mineral recovery. Full article

Detecting previously unseen anomalies in sensor data is a challenging problem for artificial intelligence when sensor-specific and deployment-specific characteristics of the time series need to be learned from a short calibration period. From the application point of view, this challenge becomes increasingly important because many applications are gravitating towards utilising low-cost sensors for Internet of Things deployments. While these sensors offer cost-effectiveness and customisation, their data quality does not match that of their high-end counterparts. To improve sensor data quality while addressing the challenges of anomaly detection in Internet of Things applications, we present an anomaly detection framework that learns a normality model of sensor data. The framework models the typical behaviour of individual sensors, which is crucial for the reliable detection of sensor data anomalies, especially when dealing with sensors observing significantly different signal characteristics. Our framework learns sensor-specific normality models from a small set of anomaly-free training data while employing an unsupervised feature engineering approach to select statistically significant features. The selected features are subsequently used to train a Local Outlier Factor anomaly detection model, which adaptively determines the boundary separating normal data from anomalies. The proposed anomaly detection framework is evaluated on three real-world public environmental monitoring datasets with heterogeneous sensor readings. The sensor-specific normality models are learned from extremely short calibration periods (as short as the first 3 days or 10% of the total recorded data) and outperform four other state-of-the-art anomaly detection approaches with respect to F1-score (between 5.4% and 9.3% better) and Matthews correlation coefficient (between 4.0% and 7.6% better). Although there is growing agreement between scholars about the crucial role of Maraimalai Adigal in the early stage of the Tamil nationalist movement, the state of current understanding of this “religious phase of Tamil nationalism” is far from satisfactory. Authors of this article focused on three important claims in the currently accepted view on the character and goals of Adigal’s religious reform. The first stance portrays his efforts for purification of the Tamil language from foreign influences as “anti-Aryan” and “anti-Sanskritic.” The second claim describes the reformer’s efforts as a move from polytheism to “Shaiva monotheism”, and builds on ideas of the early Orientalists and Christian missionaries in India who formulated the “Sanskritic hegemony” thesis. As an assumption running through the debates about Adigal’s reforms, there is conviction that the Tamil intellectual basically accepted the crystallizing Aryan Invasion Theory as true description of both Ancient India and roots of the social problems in Tamilnadu of his times. In their thorough analysis of Adigal’s work and scholarly debates, authors of this article disclose the role of unexamined assumption about religious competition being the main form of cultural encounters in India, and argue for very different understanding of Adigal’s efforts to revive Shaivism. The Evaluation of Blood Prooxidant–Antioxidant Balance Indicators and Cortisol Pre- and Post-Surgery in Patients with Benign Parotid Gland Tumors: A Preliminary Study

Background: The majority of parotid gland tumors are benign, e.g., pleomorphic adenoma (PA) and Warthin’s tumor (WT). From a biomedical point of view, oxidative stress is of significant importance due to its established association with the initiation and progression of various types of cancer, including parotid gland cancers. This study aimed to assess whether blood prooxidant–antioxidant markers could aid in diagnosing and guiding surgery for recurrent malignancies after parotid tumor treatment. Methods: We examined patients (n = 20) diagnosed with WT (n = 14) and PA (n = 6) using histopathological verification and computed tomography (CT) who qualified for surgical treatment. Blood samples were taken before the surgery and again 10 days later for biochemical analysis. The activities of the antioxidant enzymes (SOD, CAT and GPx), the non-enzymatic antioxidants (GSH and UA) and oxidative stress markers (MDA and TOS) were determined in the blood. The activities of CK and LDH and the concentrations of Cor and TAS were measured in the serum. Hb and Ht were determined in whole blood. Results: The patients’ SOD, CAT, and GPx activities after surgery did not differ significantly from their preoperative levels. However, following surgery, their serum TOS levels were significantly elevated in all the patients compared to baseline. In contrast, the plasma MDA concentrations were markedly reduced after surgery. Similarly, the GSH concentrations showed a significant decrease postoperatively. No significant changes were observed in the CK and LDH activities, TAS concentrations, or levels of Hb, Ht and Cor following surgery. Conclusions: The surgical removal of salivary gland tumors did not result in a reduction in oxidative stress at 10 days after surgery. Therefore, further studies are needed to determine the effectiveness of endogenous defense mechanisms in counteracting the oxidative stress induced by salivary gland tumors. Full article

Actinidia arguta is a dioecious plant, and the selection of superior male germplasm is crucial for ensuring effective pollination of female cultivars, maximizing their economic traits, and achieving high-quality yields. This study evaluated 30 male germplasms for pollen quantity, germination capacity, storage characteristics, and ultrastructural features. Results revealed significant variation in pollen germination rates (1.56–96.57%) among germplasms, with ‘Lvwang’, ‘TL20083’, and ‘TG06023’ performing best (all >90% germination). The storage characteristics study demonstrated that −80 °C is the optimal temperature for long-term pollen storage in A. arguta. Significant variations were observed in storage tolerance among different germplasms. Among them, Lvwang exhibited the best performance, maintaining a germination rate of 97.40% after 12 months of storage at −80 °C with no significant difference from the initial value, followed by TT07063. Pollen morphology was closely correlated with fertility. High-fertility pollen grains typically exhibited standard prolate or ultra-prolate shapes, featuring a tri-lobed polar view and an elliptical equatorial view, with neat germination furrows and clean surfaces. In contrast, low-fertility pollen grains frequently appeared shrunken and deformed, with widened germination furrows and visible exudates. Based on these findings, the following recommendations are proposed: ① Prioritize the use of germplasms with pollen germination rates >80% as pollinizers; ② Establish a rapid screening system based on pollen morphological characteristics. This study provides important scientific basis for both male germplasm selection and efficient cultivation practices in A. arguta (kiwiberry). Full article

Justice Joseph Story’s Commentaries on the Constitution of the United States (1833) have long been regarded as the scholarly source for a nationalist account of the U.S. Constitution in Antebellum America. Yet recent scholarship has questioned whether the Commentaries should be viewed exclusively as a work of legal scholarship. This article reinterprets Justice Story’s three-volume work as a project of civic education during a period of political and constitutional uncertainty. Written during the Nullification Crisis and in the wake of codification efforts, Justice Story presents his Commentaries for the use of the American public, providing them, and not exclusively lawyers and judges, with a source to support a popular conception of American constitutionalism. Story’s project of civic education is clearly shown by his personal efforts to abridge his Commentaries on three separate occasions to ensure the wide distribution of the work to Americans of different ages, groups, localities, and levels of education. As such, this article offers Justice Story as a guide to contemporary judges who seek to engage in civic education projects. Full article

This article addresses the path planning problem for complete structural inspection using an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV). The proposed method emphasizes the scalability of the viewpoints and aims to provide practical solutions to different inspection distance requirements, eliminating the need for extra view-planning procedures. First, the mixed-viewpoint generation is proposed. Then, the Multi-Layered Angle-Distance Traveling Salesman Problem (ML-ADTSP) is solved, which aims to reduce overall energy consumption and inspection path complexity. A two-step Genetic Algorithm (GA) is used to solve the combinatorial optimization problem. The performance of different crossover functions is also discussed. By solving the ML-ADTSP, the simulation results demonstrate that the mean accelerations of the UAV throughout the inspection path are flattened significantly, improving the overall path smoothness and reducing traversal difficulty. With minor low-level optimization, the proposed framework can be applied to inspect different structures. Full article

Whilst there has been an increasing trend of women holding academic positions in European Higher Tertiary Institutions (HTIs), leadership positions are held predominantly by men. The study draws on radical feminism theory with which its methodology is aligned by investigating the perceptions of both genders. To that end, the study categorizes the impediments holding women back from breaking the glass ceiling into endogenous and exogenous factors. By doing so, the authors are in a better position to recommend the implementation of policies and procedures to address this inequality and navigate towards achieving sustainable gender equality. The research was conducted using an online survey questionnaire administered among all academic and administrative staff of universities in the Republic of Cyprus, the country with the highest glass ceiling in the EU. The authors found that the binary genders differ in their perceptions of what keeps women from breaking the glass ceiling and that this is attributable to exogenous factors, namely, (a) the walls created by male leaders, reinforcing a feeling of marginalization and mansplaining; and (b) family obligations enhancing women’s experiencing a lack of time and burnout. Furthermore, the exogenous factors and the extremely gendered higher echelons of HTIs underpin the endogenous factor of self-sabotage, making women feel they would rather avoid the toxic leadership environment with its lack of professional credit, a view supported by radical feminism theory. The authors suggest practical policy implications to rectify the gender imbalance in leadership in HTIs and suggest directions for future research. Full article

Extreme heat is a pressing public health threat. This study assesses and describes the interrelationships between beliefs about heat waves, individuals’ precautionary behaviors during heat waves, and demographic factors. In May 2022, we surveyed 1051 residents (aged 25–90 years) in Southern Spain, a region that experiences frequent heat waves. We found that many participants engaged in heat wave avoidance (80.5%, e.g., spending more time indoors), impact reduction (63.7%, e.g., drinking more water), or prosocial behavior (31.6%, e.g., helping others). However, one in four (25.9%) respondents also indicated that they personally do not need to worry about heat waves. Heat wave beliefs and behaviors were modestly correlated with demographic characteristics. Individuals who view themselves as less vulnerable to heat-related health risks (“impervious” beliefs) were less likely to report altering their behavior during heat waves. Public health efforts aiming to change behavior during heat waves may anticipate “impervious” beliefs and demographic differences in risk perception and heat-related behaviors. Full article

The manuscript examines the cause-and-effect relationships of fires in the Republic of Serbia over a fifteen-year period, primarily from the aspect of human safety. For this purpose, numerical variables describing the number of injuries and deaths in fires were introduced, on which various analysis and modeling techniques were implemented, which can be viewed in the context of data mining (DM). First, for both observed variables, stochastic modeling of their temporal dynamics was analyzed, and subsequently, cluster analysis of the values of these variables was performed using two different methods. Finally, by interpreting these variables as outputs (objectives) for the classification problem, several decision trees were formed that describe the influence and relationship of different fire causes on situations in which injuries or human casualties occur or not. In that way, several different types of fires have been identified, including rare but deadly incidents that require urgent preventive measures. Key risk factors such as fire cause, location, season, etc., have been found to significantly influence human casualties. These findings provide practical insights for improving fire protection policies and emergency response. Through such a comprehensive analysis, it is believed that some important results have been obtained that precisely describe the specific relationships between the causes and consequences of fires occurring in the Republic of Serbia. Classification of Agricultural Soils in Manica and Sussundenga (Mozambique)

Mozambique soils are known for having an unbalanced agronomic and environmental composition that results in poor agricultural production yields. However, agriculture is the main economic activity of Mozambique, and soils must be characterised for their elemental deficiencies and/or excesses. This paper sampled nine farms from the Manica and Sussundenga districts (Manica province) in three campaigns in 2021/2022, 2022/2023, and 2023/2024 (before and after the rainy seasons). They were subjected to a physical–chemical analysis to assess their quality from the fertility and environmental contamination point of view. Attending to the physical–chemical properties analysed, and for all the soils and sampling campaigns, a low concentration below the limit of detection for B of <0.2 mg/Kg for the majority of soils and a low concentration of Al < 0.025 mg/Kg for all the soils were obtained. Also, higher concentrations for the majority of soils for the Ca between 270 and 1634 mg/Kg, for the Mg between 41 and 601 mg/Kg, for the K between 17 and 406 mg/Kg, for the Mn between 13.6 and 522 mg/Kg, for the Fe between 66.3 and 243 mg/Kg, and for the P between <20 and 132 mg/Kg were estimated. In terms of texture and for the sand, a high percentage between 6.1 and 79% was found. In terms of metal concentrations and for all the soils of the Sussundenga district and sampling campaigns, a concentration above the reference value concentration for the Cr (76–1400 mg/Kg) and a concentration below the reference value concentration for the Pb (5–19 mg/Kg), Ba (13–120 mg/Kg) and for the Zn (10–61 mg/Kg) were evaluated. A multivariate data analysis methodology was used based on cluster and discriminant analysis. The analysis of twenty-three physical–chemical variables of the soils suggested four clusters of soils characterised by deficiencies and excess elements that must be corrected to improve the yield and quality of agricultural production. Moreover, the multivariate analysis of the metal composition of soil samples from the second and third campaigns, before and after the rainy season, suggested five clusters with a pristine composition and different metal pollutant compositions and concentrations. The information obtained in this study allows for the scientific comprehension of agricultural soil quality, which is crucial for designing agronomic and environmental corrective measures to improve food quality and quantity in the Manica and Sussundenga districts and ensure environmental, social, and economic sustainability. Automated vehicles controlled by artificial intelligence are becoming capable of making moral decisions independently. This study investigates the differences in participants’ perceptions of the moral decision-maker’s permissibility when viewing scenarios (pre-test) and after witnessing the outcomes of moral decisions (post-test). It also investigates how permissibility, ten typical moral emotions, and perceived moral agency fluctuate when AI and the human driver make deontological or utilitarian decisions in a pedestrian-sacrificing dilemma (Experiment 1, N = 254) and a driver-sacrificing dilemma (Experiment 2, N = 269) from a third-person perspective. Moreover, by conducting binary logistic regression, this study examined whether these factors could predict the non-decrease in permissibility ratings. In both experiments, participants preferred to delegate decisions to human drivers rather than to AI, and they generally preferred utilitarianism over deontology. The results of perceived moral emotions and moral agency provide evidence. Moreover, Experiment 2 elicited greater variations in permissibility, moral emotions, and perceived moral agency compared to Experiment 1. Moreover, deontology and gratitude could positively predict the non-decrease in permissibility ratings in Experiment 1, while contempt had a negative influence. In Experiment 2, the human driver and disgust were significant negative predictor factors, while perceived moral agency had a positive influence. Background/Objectives: A common approach to investigating visual form processing is through studying responses to visual stimuli that comprise illusory contours. Such stimuli induce contours where none exist physically and thus reveal the constructive nature of visual perception and the conditions that engender it. The present work used IC stimuli to study the development of visual form detection and extraction in infants and adults. Methods: Infant and adult participants viewed square stimulus forms with either real or illusory contours, while their looking behavior was measured with an eye tracker. Fixations of the stimuli were coded by region, distinguishing between the contours of the forms and within the forms themselves. Fixations were summed by region, and fixations on forms were interpreted to index the detection of coherent, whole forms. Fixations on contours (real and illusory) were interpreted to index the extraction of form edges. Results: Total form fixations differed by age. For real contours, fixations by infants exceeded those by adults; when contours were illusory, adult fixations were greater than those of infants. Contour fixations were similar between ages. Infants and adults both looked more at contours when illusory than when real. Conclusions: Together, the results provide new conclusions about change and continuity in the visual analysis of form and contour. The results suggest that the visual detection and binding of simple form structure appears to develop between infancy and adulthood. However, the exploration of contours that support the extraction of form contours from backgrounds appears to change little between infancy and adulthood. Full article

Stereoscopic omnidirectional images (SOIs) have gained significant attention for their immersive viewing experience by providing binocular depth with panoramic scenes. However, evaluating their visual quality remains challenging due to its unique spherical geometry, binocular disparity, and viewing conditions. To address these challenges, this paper proposes a dual-branch deep learning framework that integrates spherical structural features and perceptual binocular cues to assess the quality of SOIs without reference. Specifically, the global branch leverages spherical convolutions to capture wide-range spatial distortions, while the local branch utilizes a binocular difference module based on discrete wavelet transform to extract depth-aware perceptual information. A feature complementarity module is introduced to fuse global and local representations for final quality prediction. Experimental evaluations on two public SOIQA datasets—NBU-SOID and SOLID—demonstrate that the proposed method achieves state-of-the-art performance, with PLCC/SROCC values of 0.926/0.918 and 0.918/0.891, respectively. These results validate the effectiveness and robustness of our approach in stereoscopic omnidirectional image quality assessment tasks. Full article

Analysis of Sequential Pneumococcal Vaccination Coverage in the Elderly Resident Population of the Viterbo Local Health Authority from 2018 to 2023

Background: Pneumococcal disease is a significant health burden, particularly among older adults and individuals with chronic conditions. Sequential pneumococcal vaccination (PCV13 followed by PPSV23) has been recommended in Italy since 2017 for its demonstrated efficacy, safety, and cost-effectiveness in preventing invasive pneumococcal disease (IPD). Nevertheless, limited data are available on the sequential pneumococcal vaccination coverage in Italy. This study aimed to evaluate the coverage and trends of sequential pneumococcal vaccination among individuals who turned 65 years old within the Viterbo Local Health Authority between 2018 and 2023. Methods: A retrospective cohort study was conducted using data from the Regional Vaccination Registry (AVR), a comprehensive digital vaccination dataset. Vaccination coverage was calculated based on individuals completing the sequential pneumococcal vaccination within two years after turning 65 years old. Trends as well as subgroup variations based on sex, citizenship, district of residence, and municipality size were analyzed. Results: Among 27,657 individuals who turned 65 years of age during the study period, only 2.32% completed the sequential pneumococcal vaccination. Coverage increased steadily from 2018 (0.60%) to a peak in 2020 (3.27%), followed by a plateau and a decline in 2023 (2.53%). Coverage varied across demographic and geographic subgroups: females (2.58%) had higher coverage than males (2.04%), Italian citizens (2.45%) exceeded foreign residents (0.64%), and residents in District C (3.03%) led over District A (1.08%). Smaller municipalities (≤10,000 inhabitants) showed higher coverage (2.52%) than larger ones (1.98%). Conclusions: Adherence to sequential pneumococcal vaccination has been very low throughout the considered study period. This is highly relevant information to consider in the view of new available pneumococcal vaccines for immunization of the elderly. Furthermore, geographic and demographic differences highlight the need for targeted public health interventions. Full article
