Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is widely applied in veterinary regenerative medicine due to its rich composition of growth factors that promote tissue repair. However, the direct pro-angiogenic function of canine PRP (cPRP) has not been thoroughly validated through controlled in vitro and in vivo experimentation. Human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) were used to assess cell proliferation, migration, and tube formation after exposure to cPRP. In addition, a rabbit corneal micropocket assay was employed to evaluate in vivo angiogenic responses. Treatment with 20% cPRP significantly enhanced HUVEC proliferation and migration and induced robust tube formation. In the in vivo model, we observed dose-dependent neovascularization, with the earliest vascular sprouting seen on day 1 in the 40% group. Both models consistently demonstrated that cPRP stimulates vascular development in a concentration-dependent manner. This study provides novel evidence of cPRP’s capacity to induce neovascularization, supporting its therapeutic value for treating nonhealing wounds in dogs, especially in cases involving chronic inflammation, aging, or immune dysregulation. These findings offer a scientific foundation for the broader clinical application of cPRP in veterinary regenerative practice. Full article

Protein-losing nephropathy (PLN) involves a heterogeneous group of pathologies leading to selective glomerular damage and development of renal disease. ICGN, the main cause of PLN, requires immunosuppressive treatment. However, the scientific evidence in veterinary medicine on immunosuppressive therapeutic schemes in this condition is limited. The aim of this study is to describe the clinical and paraclinical evolution of five dogs with PLN, presumably associated with ICGN, treated with chlorambucil as immunosuppressive monotherapy. Suspected IGCN was established by the presence of a urine protein–creatinine ratio (UPC) ≥ 3 without response to standard therapy, hypoalbuminemia < 2, or progressive azotemia. Patients were treated with a dosage range of chlorambucil from 0.16 to 0.4 mg/kg (mean 0.25 mg/kg) every 24 h as the sole immunosuppressant. In the end, 4/5 patients showed significant clinical improvement, 3/3 had resolution of the nephrotic syndrome, 5/5 had a sustained decrease in UPC values during follow-up and no relevant adverse effects were observed. In this report, chlorambucil proved to be a well-tolerated and potentially effective monotherapy for immune-mediated PLN in dogs. Full article

Feline urinary tract infections (UTIs) present a common challenge in veterinary practice, underscoring the importance of understanding local bacterial pathogens and antimicrobial resistance (AMR). This study determined bacterial prevalence and antimicrobial susceptibility in cats at Kasetsart University’s Veterinary Teaching Hospital in Bangkok, Thailand. Of the 543 cystocentesis urine samples collected from 428 cats, 115 (21.2%) tested positive for bacterial cultures, leading to a diagnosis of UTIs in 95 cats (22.2%). The most prevalent isolates included Escherichia coli (24.8%), Staphylococcus species (19.2%), Proteus mirabilis (13.6%), Pseudomonas aeruginosa (12.0%), and Enterococcus species (12.0%). Staphylococcus felis (8.8%) and Staphylococcus pseudintermedius (5.6%) were the predominant Staphylococcus species. Rare pathogens such as Corynebacterium urealyticum and Lactococcus garvieae were also identified. Antimicrobial testing revealed alarming resistance, with 69.2% of isolates exhibiting multidrug resistance (MDR). Escherichia coli and Proteus mirabilis showed high resistance to amoxicillin/clavulanic acid (AMC) (45.2–70.6%) and sulfamethoxazole/trimethoprim (SXT) (51.6–52.9%). Enterococcus faecium exhibited 85.7% resistance to AMC. Methicillin resistance was identified in 41.7% of Staphylococcus isolates, particularly high in Staphylococcus epidermidis (75.0%) and Staphylococcus pseudintermedius (71.4%). High fluoroquinolone resistance among MDR isolates further exacerbates AMR concerns. These results indicate that MDR Gram-negative, Staphylococcus, and Enterococcus species complicate the empirical treatment of feline UTIs, highlighting significant implications for AMR in veterinary practice. Antibiotic residues in poultry pose health and resistance risks, necessitating breed-specific WDTs. In this study, the residue elimination patterns of seven antibiotics in Taihang chicken tissues under free-range conditions were studied and the appropriate WDT was formulated. A total of 240 healthy Taihang chickens aged 100 days were randomly divided into 8 groups, each comprising 30 chickens. Chickens in groups 1 to 7 were administered oxytetracycline, chlortetracycline, erythromycin, tylosin, tylvalosin, lincomycin, and tiamulin, respectively. Regarding the administration method, we adopted the highest dose and maximum course of treatment recommended by the Veterinary Pharmacopoeia of the People’s Republic of China. Group 8 served as the control group. Muscle, sebum, liver, and kidney samples were collected at 4 h, 1 d, 2 d, 3 d, 5 d, 7 d, 10 d, 13 d, and 16 d after drug withdrawal. Our results demonstrated that the drug residues after drug withdrawal gradually decreased with the increase in drug withdrawal days, and the elimination rate in the early stage of drug withdrawal was significantly faster than that in the later stage. At 4 h after drug withdrawal, the drug residues in various tissues reached their highest values. In most cases, the drug concentrations in the kidney and liver were higher than those in the muscles and sebum; however, some drugs also exhibited concentration peaks in the sebum. On the first day of drug withdrawal, the amount of residues in various tissues decreased rapidly. In general, the elimination rate of various drugs in the muscles, liver, and kidneys is faster but slower in the sebum. Based on the WDT calculation software WT1.4, the recommended WDTs for oxytetracycline, chlortetracycline, erythromycin, tylosin, tylvalosin, lincomycin, and tiamulin chickens are 4 d, 5 d, 11 d, 8 d, 13 d, 13 d, and 7 d, respectively. The last decades of research have shown that the endocannabinoid system may be a promising therapeutic target for the pharmacological treatment of cancer in human medicine and possibly in veterinary medicine as well. Compared with the original cells, the expression of gene encoding for receptors and enzymes belonging to the endocannabinoid system has been found to be altered in several tumor types; it has been hypothesized that this aberrant expression may be related to the course of the neoplasm as well as to the patient’s prognosis. Several studies, conducted both in vitro and in vivo, suggest that both endo- and phytocannabinoids can modulate signaling pathways, controlling cell proliferation and survival. In the complex process of carcinogenesis, cannabinoids seem to intervene at different levels by stimulating cell death, inhibiting the processes of angiogenesis and metastasis, and regulating antitumor immunity. Although the molecular mechanisms by which cannabinoids act are not always clear and defined, their synergistic activity with the most used antineoplastic drugs in clinical oncology is showing promising results, thus providing veterinary medicine with alternative therapeutic targets in disease control. This review aims to summarize current knowledge on the potential role of the endocannabinoid system and exogenous cannabinoids in oncology, with specific reference to the molecular mechanisms by which cannabinoids may exert antitumor activity. Additionally, it explores the potential synergy between cannabinoids and conventional anticancer drugs and considers their application in veterinary oncology. Full article

The erector spinae plane (ESP) block is a widely used technique for perioperative analgesia. It involves the infiltration of anesthetics into the interfacial plane between the erector spinae muscle and the transverse processes of the vertebrae. In veterinary medicine, this technique has been adapted for different species, but there are no cadaveric studies in cats. This study describes the ultrasound-guided lumbar ESP-block technique and evaluates the spread of two volumes of dye in feline cadavers. Injections were performed at the second lumbar vertebra (L2) level using 0.6 mL/kg (high volume [HV]) and 0.4 mL/kg (low volume [LV]) of methylene blue bilaterally. After anatomical dissection, the distribution of the dye, the staining of the spinal nerve branches, and the presence of dye in the epidural space were recorded. The results demonstrated that the HV treatment provided wider longitudinal distribution, staining the dorsal branch of the spinal nerves in an average of five segments per injection, without extravasation into the epidural space. It is concluded that the HV treatment promotes efficient multisegmental spread in feline cadavers. Full article

Emerging RNA viruses such as influenza A virus (IAV), Zika virus (ZIKV), and dengue virus (DENV) continue to pose major challenges to animal and public health due to their high mutation rates, wide host ranges, and immune evasion strategies. In this study, we evaluated the in vitro antiviral activity of a marine bacterial extract derived from Parerythrobacter sp. M20A3S10 against IAV (H1N1; H3N2), influenza B virus (IBV), ZIKV, and DENV2. The extract demonstrated broad-spectrum antiviral effects with favorable selectivity indices across multiple host-derived epithelial cell lines. Notably, post-infection treatment significantly suppressed viral replication, suggesting a host-modulating or replication-inhibiting mechanism. While the extract’s active components have yet to be identified, bacteria from the Erythrobacteraceae family are known producers of bioactive metabolites with potential antiviral properties. These findings provide preliminary insight into the potential of marine-derived bacterial compounds in veterinary antiviral development and highlight the need for further characterization and in vivo validation. This work contributes to the understanding of virus–host interactions and the exploration of novel therapeutic strategies targeting the pathogenesis and immune modulation of veterinary RNA viruses. Infections caused by oxacillin-resistant Staphylococcus pseudintermedius are increasingly common in veterinary medicine. The indiscriminate use of antibiotics by pet owners worsens this problem, reducing treatment efficacy and creating the need for alternative therapies. This study aimed to evaluate the inhibitory effect of clove essential oil (Syzygium aromaticum) on both oxacillin-resistant and susceptible S. pseudintermedius. Thirty-five isolates from dogs with otitis externa were analyzed. The bacteria were identified by phenotypic tests and tested for susceptibility to 22 antibiotics using disk diffusion. Resistance genes (mecA and blaZ) were detected using conventional PCR. Among the isolates, 34.28% (12/35) were positive for mecA, and 97.14% (34/35) for blaZ. The essential oil’s efficacy was assessed using broth microdilution to determine its minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC). Clove oil showed an average MIC and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) of 6.4 mg/mL, inhibiting both resistant and susceptible isolates. In conclusion, clove essential oil demonstrated in vitro antimicrobial activity against S. pseudintermedius. Full article

This study aims to evaluate the feasibility and accuracy of 3D printing-guided endodontics in the maxillary teeth of dogs. CT data from a Beagle dog were processed to create a 3D model of the maxilla, and virtual root canal pathways were established using SOLIDWORKS software (version 29.0.0.5028). Guided endodontic templates were 3D printed and tested in vitro on 20 maxillary teeth (excluding the third molars), with 36 root canals treated using both guided and conventional methods. Results indicated that 3D printing-guided endodontics provided accurate root canal pathways, with minimal deviations in length (average 3.08 ± 1.75%) and angular alignment (average 2.06° ± 0.5°) compared to conventional methods. This research represents a significant step forward in the application of 3D printing technology in veterinary endodontics, offering a promising alternative to traditional methods for treating complex dental conditions in dogs. Medetomidine, a veterinary α2-adrenergic agonist, has recently emerged as an adulterant in the non-medical opioid supply, yet human exposure has remained poorly characterized. We conducted a pragmatic retrospective cohort analysis utilizing chart review and liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) toxicology testing on available urine samples from patients presenting to two hospitals in Philadelphia, PA, who fit two clinical phenotypes, intoxication or withdrawal. Samples also underwent glucuronidase pre-treatment to assess impact on the yield of medetomidine and xylazine metabolite detection. Testing identified universal exposure to medetomidine (58/58 samples) via the 3-hydroxy-medetomidine (3-OH-M) metabolite, post glucuronidase treatment and variable xylazine exposure (40/58 samples). Importantly, 32% of medetomidine exposures would have been missed without enzymatic pre-treatment. Patients exhibited two distinct clinical phenotypes: intoxication, characterized primarily by sedation; bradycardia; and often hypotension, and withdrawal, presenting with life-threatening tachycardia; hypertension and often encephalopathy. Notably, clinical phenotype correlated with urinary concentrations of 3-OH-M but not xylazine. These findings underscore the critical need for heightened clinical awareness and need for contemporaneous toxicologic screening mechanisms for medetomidine exposure, emphasizing its distinct clinical presentations and the potential public health implications posed by its widespread adulteration in illicit opioids. Cardiac tumors in dogs, although rare in the past, have shown an increasing incidence due to advances in veterinary imaging, especially echocardiography, CT, and MRI with contrast agents. Right atrial hemangiosarcoma is the most common form of tumor associated with pericardial effusion and cardiac tamponade, followed by chemodectoma, which is more common in brachycephalic breeds. The diagnosis is based on echocardiographic examination, supplemented by advanced methods and possibly biopsy. Clinical signs are often non-specific, requiring an integrated approach. Treatment includes pericardiocentesis, chemotherapy, and, in some cases, surgery, but the prognosis remains reserved. Full article

The growth of aquaculture production in recent years has revealed multiple challenges, including the rise of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in aquatic animal production, which is currently attracting significant attention from multiple one-health stakeholders. While antibiotics have played a major role in the treatment of bacterial infections for almost a century, a major consequence of their use is the increase in AMR, including the emergence of AMR in aquaculture. The AMR phenomenon creates a situation where antibiotic use in one system (e.g., aquaculture) may impact another system (e.g., terrestrial–human). Non-prudent use of antibiotics in aquaculture and animal farming increases the risk of AMR emergence, since bacteria harboring antibiotic resistance genes can cross between compartments such as wastewater or other effluents to aquatic environments, including intensive aquaculture. Transferable antimicrobial resistance gene (AMG) elements (plasmids, transposons, integrons, etc.) have already been detected in varying degrees from pathogenic bacteria that are often causing infections in farmed fish (Aeromonas, Vibrio, Streptococcus, Pseudomonas, Edwardsiella, etc.). This review of current veterinary approaches for the prevention and control of AMR emergence in aquaculture focuses on the feasibility of alternatives to antimicrobials and supplemental treatment applications during on-farm bacterial disease control and prevention. Repurposing Rafoxanide: From Parasite Killer to Cancer Fighter

Rafoxanide, originally developed as a veterinary anthelmintic for the treatment of parasitic infections in livestock, has recently emerged as a promising therapeutic prospect in oncology. This compound has demonstrated notable antineoplastic effects against a variety of cancers, including skin, gastric, colorectal, and lung cancers, as well as hematological malignancies such as multiple myeloma. Rafoxanide exerts its anticancer activity through multiple complementary mechanisms, including the induction of endoplasmic reticulum stress, cell cycle arrest, apoptosis, and immunogenic cell death. Furthermore, the drug has been reported to inhibit key oncogenic signaling pathways (e.g., STAT3, NF-κB, c-FLIP, survivin) that contribute to tumor growth and metastasis. Preclinical studies in murine models have demonstrated significant reductions in tumor volume of up to 50% and a tumor-free rate exceeding 80%, with effective doses ranging from 7.5 to 40 mg/kg. This multitargeted mode of action distinguishes rafoxanide from conventional therapies and may help overcome resistance mechanisms that often limit the efficacy of cancer treatments. In this review, we summarize and discuss the growing body of evidence supporting rafoxanide’s therapeutic potential in oncology, as well as its possible applications in cancer treatment. Full article

Antimicrobial Potential of Bacteriophages JG005 and JG024 Against Pseudomonas aeruginosa Isolates from Canine Otitis

Canine otitis externa caused by Pseudomonas aeruginosa is a relevant disease in veterinary medicine. Given P. aeruginosa’s high priority status for the development of new antimicrobials, innovative strategies like bacteriophage therapy are essential. Lytic bacteriophages are viruses with high specificity for their bacterial hosts, making them a promising therapeutic choice in both human and veterinary medicine. This study aimed to evaluate the antimicrobial potential of bacteriophages JG005 and JG024, first characterized in terms of their biofilm-forming ability and antimicrobial susceptibility profile, against P. aeruginosa isolates obtained from dogs with otitis externa,. Bacteriophages titer, host range, and activity were assessed against P. aeruginosa biofilms via microtiter assays using crystal violet and Alamar Blue. JG024 showed lytic activity against 61.2% (n = 30/49) of the isolates, while JG005 showed lytic activity against 38.8% (n = 19/49) of the isolates. Crystal violet quantification showed that JG005 can promote strong microbial suppression of 60% (n = 6/10) and 50% (n = 5/10) of the isolates at a multiplicity of infection (MOI) of 10 and 100, respectively. JG024 presented strong microbial suppression of 20% (n = 2/10) of the isolates regardless of the MOI level tested. These phages show promising potential as an innovative treatment for canine otitis externa caused by P. aeruginosa, but further studies are needed before future clinical use. Full article

Odontogenic abscesses are a frequent and challenging clinical issue in pet rabbits, often requiring a comprehensive diagnostic and therapeutic approach. This review collates current evidence on the etiology, diagnosis, and treatment of rabbit odontogenic abscesses, with a focus on imaging advances, microbial diversity, and local antimicrobial therapies. Predisposing factors include congenital conformation, inappropriate diet (insufficient abrasiveness, calcium or Vit D deficiencies, etc.), trauma, and neoplasia. Imaging techniques such as CT and cone-beam CT (CBCT) enable early detection and surgical planning, while traditional radiography remains useful in general practice. Treatment includes systemic antibiotics, surgical curettage, and the use of localized delivery systems such as antibiotic-impregnated polymethyl methacrylate (AIPMMA) beads. Adjunctive therapies like Manuka honey are also discussed. Two original heatmaps summarize bacterial prevalence and antimicrobial resistance from six peer-reviewed studies. These visualizations highlight the polymicrobial nature of these infections and the emergence of multidrug-resistant strains. Preventive strategies focus on optimal diet, regular dental checks, and owner education. The review also identifies key gaps in the literature, including the underreporting of anaerobes and lack of standardized treatment protocols. This article aims to support veterinary professionals in delivering evidence-based, individualized care to improve outcomes in rabbits with odontogenic abscesses. Full article
