Urban traffic noise has become an increasingly significant environmental and public health issue, with many cities—particularly those experiencing rapid urban growth, such as Kuwait—recording levels that often exceed recommended limits. In this study, we present a detailed, data-driven approach for assessing and predicting equivalent continuous noise levels (LAeq) in residential neighborhoods. The analysis draws on measurements taken at 12 carefully chosen sites covering different road types and urban settings, resulting in 21,720 matched observations. A range of predictors was considered, including road classification, traffic composition, meteorological variables, spatial context, and time of day. Four predictive models—Linear Regression, Support Vector Machine (SVM), Gaussian Process Regression, and Bagged Trees—were evaluated through 5-fold cross-validation. Among these, the Bagged Trees model achieved the strongest performance (R2 = 0.91, RMSE = 2.13 dB(A)). To better understand how the model made its predictions, we used SHAP (SHapley Additive Explanations) analysis, which showed that road classification, location, heavy vehicle volume, and time of day had the greatest influence on noise levels. The results identify the main determinants of traffic noise in Kuwait’s urban areas and emphasize the role of targeted design and planning in its mitigation. Full article

Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have become a tool for solving numerous practical tasks. UAV sensors provide images and videos for on-line or off-line data processing for object localization, classification, and tracking due to the use of trained convolutional neural networks (CNNs) and artificial intelligence. However, quality of images acquired by UAV-based sensors is not always perfect due to many factors. One of them could be noise arising because of several reasons. Its presence, especially if noise is intensive, can make significantly worse the performance characteristics of CNN-based techniques of object localization and classification. We analyze such degradation for a set of eleven modern CNNs for additive white Gaussian noise model and study when (for what noise intensity and for what CNN) the performance reduction becomes essential and, thus, special means to improve it become desired. Representatives of two most popular families, namely the block matching 3-dimensional (BM3D) filter and DRUNet denoiser, are employed to enhance images under condition of a priori known noise properties. It is shown that, due to preliminary denoising, the CNN performance characteristics can be significantly improved up to almost the same level as for the noise-free images without CNN retraining. Performance is analyzed using several criteria typical for image denoising, object localization and classification. Examples of object localization and classification are presented demonstrating possible object missing due to noise. Computational efficiency is also taken into account. Using a large set of test data, it is demonstrated that: (1) the best results are usually provided for SSD Mobilenet V2 and VGG16 networks; (2) the performance characteristics for cases of applying BM3D filter and DRUNet denoiser are similar but the use of DRUNet is preferable since it provides slightly better results. Battery technology plays an increasingly vital role in portable electronic devices, electric vehicles, and renewable energy storage. During operation, batteries undergo performance degradation, which not only reduces device efficiency, but may also pose safety risks. The State of Health (SOH) is a crucial indicator for assessing battery condition. Traditional SOH prediction methods face limitations in real-time adjustment and accuracy under complex operating conditions. By determining electrode capacity loss and identifying complex patterns that traditional methods struggle to detect, prediction accuracy can be improved. Based on electrode capacity matching and compensation relationships, this paper proposes an electrode capacity balance model to evaluate battery development trends and degradation during cycling. We use qLiqp state assessment as a trend criterion, qp to quantify aging, and Qc to identify thermal runaway risk levels, developing more efficient SOH prediction indicators and methods to ensure battery safety and performance. The growing need for efficient and safe high-energy lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) in electric vehicles and grid storage necessitates advanced internal monitoring solutions. This work presents a comprehensive simulation model of a novel integrated optical sensor based on ethylene carbonate-filled photonic crystal fiber (EC-PCF). The proposed design synergistically combines a chirped fiber Bragg grating (FBG) and an extrinsic Fabry–Pérot interferometer (EFPI) on a multiplexed platform for the multifunctional sensing of refractive index (RI), temperature, strain, and pressure (via strain coupling) within LIBs. By matching the RI of the PCF cladding to the battery electrolyte using ethylene carbonate, the design maximizes light–matter interaction for exceptional RI sensitivity, while the cascaded EFPI enhances mechanical deformation detection beyond conventional FBG arrays. The simulation framework employs the Transfer Matrix Method with Gaussian apodization to model FBG reflectivity and the Airy formula for high-fidelity EFPI spectra, incorporating critical effects like stress-induced birefringence, Transverse Electric (TE)/Transverse Magnetic (TM) polarization modes, and wavelength dispersion across the 1540–1560 nm range. Robustness against fabrication variations and environmental noise is rigorously quantified through Monte Carlo simulations with Sobol sequences, predicting temperature sensitivities of ∼12 pm/°C, strain sensitivities of ∼1.10 pm/με, and a remarkable RI sensitivity of ∼1200 nm/RIU. Validated against independent experimental data from instrumented battery cells, this model establishes a robust computational foundation for real-time battery monitoring and provides a critical design blueprint for future experimental realization and integration into advanced battery management systems. The increasing adoption of electric delivery fleets introduces significant challenges related to uneven energy utilization and suboptimal scheduling efficiency. Vehicle-to-Vehicle (V2V) energy sharing presents a promising solution, but its effectiveness critically depends on precise matching and co-optimization within dynamic urban traffic environments. This paper proposes a hierarchical optimization framework to minimize total fleet operational costs, incorporating a comprehensive analysis that includes battery degradation. The core innovation of the framework lies in coupling high-level path planning with low-level real-time speed control. First, a high-fidelity energy consumption surrogate model is constructed through model predictive control simulations, incorporating vehicle dynamics and signal phase and timing information. Second, the spatiotemporal longest common subsequence algorithm is employed to match the spatio-temporal trajectories of energy-provider and energy-consumer vehicles. A battery aging model is integrated to quantify the long-term costs associated with different operational strategies. Finally, a multi-objective particle swarm optimization algorithm, integrated with MPC, co-optimizes the rendezvous paths and speed profiles. In a case study based on a logistics network, simulation results demonstrate that, compared to the conventional station-based charging mode, the proposed V2V framework reduces total fleet operational costs by a net 12.5% and total energy consumption by 17.4% while increasing the energy utilization efficiency of EV-Ps by 21.4%. This net saving is achieved even though the V2V strategy incurs a marginal increase in battery aging costs, which is overwhelmingly offset by substantial savings in logistical efficiency. This study provides an efficient and economical solution for the dynamic energy management of electric fleets under realistic traffic conditions, contributing to a more sustainable and resilient urban logistics ecosystem. Thermal imaging is increasingly applied in remote sensing to identify material degradation, monitor structural integrity, and support energy diagnostics. However, its adoption is limited by the low spatial resolution of thermal sensors compared to RGB cameras. This study proposes a modular pipeline to generate thermally enriched 3D point clouds by fusing RGB and thermal imagery acquired simultaneously with a dual-sensor unmanned aerial vehicle system. The methodology includes geometric calibration of both cameras, image undistortion, cross-spectral feature matching, and projection of radiometric data onto the photogrammetric model through a computed homography. Thermal values are extracted using a custom parser and assigned to 3D points based on visibility masks and interpolation strategies. Calibration achieved 81.8% chessboard detection, yielding subpixel reprojection errors. Among twelve evaluated algorithms, LightGlue retained 99% of its matches and delivered a reprojection accuracy of 18.2% at 1 px, 65.1% at 3 px and 79% at 5 px. A case study on photovoltaic panels demonstrates the method’s capability to map thermal patterns with low temperature deviation from ground-truth data. Developed entirely in Python, the workflow integrates into Agisoft Metashape or other software. The proposed approach enables cost-effective, high-resolution thermal mapping with applications in civil engineering, cultural heritage conservation, and environmental monitoring applications. Conventional projection systems typically require a fixed spatial configuration relative to the projection surface, with strict control over distance and angle. In contrast, UAV-mounted projectors overcome these constraints, enabling dynamic, large-scale projections onto non-planar and complex environments. However, such flexible scenarios introduce a key challenge: severe geometric distortions caused by intricate surface geometry and continuous camera–projector motion. To address this, we propose a novel image registration method based on global dense matching, which estimates the real-time optical flow field between the input projection image and the target surface. The estimated flow is used to pre-warp the image, ensuring that the projected content appears geometrically consistent across arbitrary, deformable surfaces. The core idea of our method lies in reformulating the geometric distortion correction task as a global feature matching problem, effectively reducing 3D spatial deformation into a 2D dense correspondence learning process. To support learning and evaluation, we construct a hybrid dataset that covers a wide range of projection scenarios, including diverse lighting conditions, object geometries, and projection contents. Extensive simulation and real-world experiments show that our method achieves superior accuracy and robustness in correcting geometric distortions in dynamic UAV projection, significantly enhancing visual fidelity in complex environments. This approach provides a practical solution for real-time, high-quality projection in UAV-based augmented reality, outdoor display, and aerial information delivery systems. Full article

Hybrid polysaccharide-based aerogels offer significant potential as advanced drug delivery platforms due to their tunable structure, high porosity, and biocompatibility. In this study, aerogel microparticles were synthesized using alginate, pectin, carrageenan, and their hybrid formulations via an emulsion–gelation technique followed by supercritical fluid CO2 extraction. The resulting aerogels exhibit mesoporous structures with specific surface areas ranging from 324 to 521 m2/g and pore volumes between 1.99 and 3.75 cm3/g. Comprehensive characterization (SEM, gas sorption, XRD, TGA, DSC, and FTIR) confirmed that hybridization improved morphological uniformity and thermal stability compared to single polymer aerogels. Ibuprofen was used as a model drug to evaluate loading efficiency and release kinetics. Among all formulations, the alginate/carrageenan (2:1) hybrid showed the highest drug loading efficiency (93.5%) and a rapid release profile (>90% within 15 min), closely matching the performance of commercial ibuprofen tablets. Drug release followed Fickian diffusion, as confirmed by the Korsmeyer–Peppas model (R2 > 0.99). These results highlight the potential of hybrid polysaccharide aerogels as vehicles for drug delivery and other fast-acting therapeutic applications. Full article

Vehicle-to-everything (V2X) communication, a current key area of research, has a large impact on traffic safety, traffic efficiency, autonomous driving technology development, and intelligent transport. In order to achieve the low-latency performance and high transmission efficiency required for V2X communication, channel estimation for transmission channels is particularly important. In this regard, this paper proposes an improved general orthogonal match pursuit (GOMP) channel estimation algorithm based on the base extension model for an orthogonal time frequency space (OTFS) system. Firstly, the channel matrix is decomposed using the basis expansion model. Then, the strong sparsity of the basis function is exploited for channel estimation using the GOMP algorithm, while the ordinal difference restriction method and the weak selectivity principle are introduced to improve the system. The obtained improved GOMP algorithm not only shows a greater improvement in terms of normalized mean square error (NMSE) and bit error rate (BER) performance but also greatly reduces computational complexity, enabling it to better satisfy the needs of V2X communication. The accurate positioning and state estimation of surface vessels are prerequisites to autonomous navigation. Recently, the rapid development of 3D LiDARs has promoted the autonomy of both land and aerial vehicles, which has attracted the interest of researchers in the maritime community. However, in traditional maritime surface multi-scenario applications, LiDAR scan matching has low point cloud scanning and matching efficiency and insufficient positional accuracy when dealing with large-scale point clouds, so it has difficulty meeting the real-time demand of low-computing-power platforms. In this paper, we use ICP-SVD for point cloud alignment in the Stanford dataset and outdoor dock scenarios and propose an optimization scheme (iVox + ICP-SVD) that incorporates the voxel structure iVox. Experiments show that the average search time of iVox is 72.23% and 96.8% higher than that of ikd-tree and kd-tree, respectively. Executed on an NVIDIA Jetson Nano (four ARM Cortex-A57 cores @ 1.43 GHz) the algorithm processes 18 k downsampled points in 56 ms on average and 65 ms in the worst case—i.e., ≤15 Hz—so every scan is completed before the next 10–20 Hz LiDAR sweep arrives. During a 73 min continuous harbor trial the CPU temperature stabilized at 68 °C without thermal throttling, confirming that the reported latency is a sustainable, field-proven upper bound rather than a laboratory best case. This dramatically improves the retrieval efficiency while effectively maintaining the matching accuracy. As a result, the overall alignment process is significantly accelerated, providing an efficient and reliable solution for real-time point cloud processing. Full article

A physics-based vehicle–track coupled dynamic model embedding a hydraulic electromechanical regenerative damper (HERD) is developed to quantify electrical power recovery and wear depth in high-speed service. The HERD subsystem resolves compressible hydraulics, hydraulic rectification, line losses, a hydraulic motor with a permanent-magnet generator, an accumulator, and a controllable; co-simulation links SIMPACK with MATLAB/Simulink. Wheel–rail contact is computed with Hertz theory and FASTSIM, and wear depth is advanced with the Archard law using a pressure–velocity coefficient map. Both HERD power regeneration and wear depth predictions have been validated against independent measurements of regenerated power and wear degradation in previous studies. Parametric studies over speed, curve radius, mileage and braking show that increasing speed raises input and output power while recovery efficiency remains 49–50%, with instantaneous electrical peaks up to 425 W and weak sensitivity to curvature and mileage. Under braking from 350 to 150 km/h, force transients are bounded and do not change the lateral wear pattern. Installing HERD lowers peak wear in the wheel tread region; combining HERD with flexible wheelsets further reduces wear depth and slows down degradation relative to rigid wheelsets and matches measured wear more closely. The HERD electrical load provides a physically grounded tuning parameter that sets hydraulic back pressure and effective damping, which improves model accuracy and supports calibration and updating of digital twins for maintenance planning. The study presents a comparative analysis of five distinct image processing methodologies for roadside wild animal detection using thermal imagery, aiming to identify an optimal approach for embedded system implementation to mitigate wildlife–vehicle collisions. The evaluated techniques included the following: bilateral filtering followed by thresholding and SIFT feature matching; Gaussian filtering combined with Canny edge detection and contour analysis; color quantization via the nearest average algorithm followed by contour identification; motion detection based on absolute inter-frame differencing, object dilation, thresholding, and contour comparison; and animal detection based on a YOLOv8n neural network. These algorithms were applied to sequential thermal images captured by a custom roadside surveillance system incorporating a thermal camera and a Raspberry Pi processing unit. Performance evaluation utilized a dataset of consecutive frames, assessing average execution time, sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy. The results revealed performance trade-offs: the motion detection method achieved the highest sensitivity (92.31%) and overall accuracy (87.50%), critical for minimizing missed detections, despite exhibiting the near lowest specificity (66.67%) and a moderate execution time (0.126 s) compared to the fastest bilateral filter approach (0.093 s) and the high-specificity Canny edge method (90.00%). Consequently, considering the paramount importance of detection reliability (sensitivity and accuracy) in this application, the motion-based methodology was selected for further development and implementation within the target embedded system framework. Subsequent testing on diverse datasets validated its general robustness while highlighting potential performance variations depending on dataset characteristics, particularly the duration of animal presence within the monitored frame. With the rapid growth of user service demands, space–air–ground integrated networks (SAGINs) face challenges such as limited resources, complex connectivity, diverse service requirements, and no-fly zone (NFZ) constraints. To address these issues, this paper proposes a joint optimization approach under NFZ constraints, maximizing system utility by simultaneously optimizing user association, unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) trajectory, and slice resource allocation. Due to the problem’s non-convexity, it is decomposed into three subproblems: user association, UAV trajectory optimization, and slice resource allocation. To solve them efficiently, we design the iterative SAC-MS algorithm, which combines matching game theory for user association, sequential convex approximation (SCA) for UAV trajectory, and soft actor–critic (SAC) reinforcement learning for slice resource allocation. Simulation results show that SAC-MS outperforms TD3-MS, DDPG-MS, DQN-MS, and hard slicing, improving system utility by 10.53%, 13.17%, 31.25%, and 45.38%, respectively. Full article

UAVThreatBench introduces the first structured benchmark for evaluating large language models in cybersecurity threat identification for unmanned aerial vehicles operating within industrial indoor settings, aligned with the European Radio Equipment Directive. The benchmark consists of 924 expert-curated industrial scenarios, each annotated with five cybersecurity threats, yielding a total of 4620 threats mapped to directive articles on network and device integrity, personal data and privacy protection, and prevention of fraud and economic harm. Seven state-of-the-art models from the OpenAI GPT family and the LLaMA family were systematically assessed on a representative subset of 100 scenarios from the UAVThreatBench dataset. The evaluation applied a fuzzy matching threshold of 70 to compare model-generated threats against expert-defined ground truth. The strongest model identified nearly nine out of ten threats correctly, with close to half of the scenarios achieving perfect alignment, while other models achieved lower but still substantial alignment. Semantic error analysis revealed systematic weaknesses, particularly in identifying availability-related threats, backend-layer vulnerabilities, and clause-level regulatory mappings. UAVThreatBench therefore establishes a reproducible foundation for regulatory-compliant cybersecurity threat identification in safety-critical unmanned aerial vehicle environments. To address the trade-off between acoustic stealth and hydrodynamic efficiency in underwater glider design, this study proposes a coupled multi-physics parametric design framework for acoustic matching structures. Using the “Dolphin” glider as a case, geometric effects on acoustic scattering were analyzed by comparing spherical, capsule, and ellipsoidal structures under acoustic incidence. The ellipsoid configuration showed a superior performance and was further optimized through parameterized Myring profiles with length-to-diameter ratios (1.8–1.875) and sharpness factors (n = 1–5). Integrated CFD-BEM simulations revealed that the optimal design (ratio 1.875, n = 2) reduces the scattering sound pressure level by 1.8 dB at 1 kHz and drag coefficient by 14.2%. At 3 m/s, bow-direction target strength decreased by 6 dB, with 4.4 dB flow noise reduction. This methodology effectively resolves acoustic–fluid conflicts, advancing low-noise underwater vehicle design. Full article
