Introduction: Cystic fibrosis (CF) is a genetic condition affecting several organs and systems, including the pancreas, colon, respiratory system, and reproductive system. The detection of a growing number of CFTR variants and genotypes has contributed to an increase in the CF population which, in turn, has had an impact on the overall statistics regarding the prognosis and outcome of the condition. Given the increase in life expectancy, it is critical to better predict outcomes and prognosticate in CF. Thus, each person’s choice to aggressively treat specific disease components can be more appropriate and tailored, further increasing survival. The objective of our narrative review is to summarize the most recent information concerning the value and significance of clinical parameters in predicting outcomes, such as gender, diabetes, liver and pancreatic status, lung function, radiography, bacteriology, and blood and sputum biomarkers of inflammation and disease, and how variations in these parameters affect prognosis from the prenatal stage to maturity. Materials and methods: A methodological search of the available data was performed with regard to prognostic factors in the evolution of CF in children and young adults. We evaluated articles from the PubMed academic search engine using the following search terms: prognostic factors AND children AND cystic fibrosis OR mucoviscidosis. Results: We found that it is crucial to customize CF patients’ care based on their unique clinical and biological parameters, genetics, and related comorbidities. Conclusions: The predictive significance of more dynamic clinical condition markers provides more realistic future objectives to center treatment and targets for each patient. Over the past ten years, improvements in care, diagnostics, and treatment have impacted the prognosis for CF. Although genotyping offers a way to categorize CF to direct research and treatment, it is crucial to understand that a variety of other factors, such as epigenetics, genetic modifiers, environmental factors, and socioeconomic status, can affect CF outcomes. The long-term management of this complicated multisystem condition has been made easier for patients, their families, and physicians by earlier and more accurate identification techniques, evidence-based research, and centralized expert multidisciplinary care. Cadmium (Cd) contamination in rice (Oryza sativa L.) poses serious health risks for human, necessitating effective mitigation strategies. This study investigated the effects of Cd stress on iron (Fe), manganese (Mn), zinc (Zn), and Cd accumulation and translocation in rice varieties with high (MY46) or low (ZS97B) Cd accumulation capacities grown in acidic and alkaline soils. Results demonstrated that Cd stress significantly inhibited plant growth, reducing plant height, shoot biomass, and grain yield in both soil types. Cd accumulation increased in roots, shoots, and grains, while Fe, Mn, and Zn concentrations decreased markedly. Molecular analysis revealed upregulation of metal transporter genes (OsIRT1, OsNRAMP1, OsNRAMP5) and the vacuolar sequestration gene (OsHMA3) in roots under Cd exposure. The translocation factor (TF) values of Mn and Zn from root to shoot were reduced in acidic soils, whereas Mn and Zn TFs exhibited an increasing trend in alkaline soils despite Cd exposure. Furthermore, correlation analyses indicated Mn and Zn play crucial roles in suppressing Cd accumulation in both acidic and alkaline soils. These findings provide critical insights for developing soil-specific strategies to reduce Cd accumulation in rice through micronutrient management. Full article

Agricultural workers—individuals employed for labor in agriculture—are at high risk of various negative health outcomes, with many impacted by both the existence of health disparities and stress. While the issue of farm stress and associated psychosocial health outcomes has been studied in the general agricultural population, research investigating these issues specifically within the agricultural worker population is sparse. This study presents data from the United States Western Region Agricultural Worker Stress Survey (N = 354), which gauged workers’ perceived stress levels, sources of stress, desired stress management topics, and preferred methods of receiving information and support services. Long working hours, working in extreme temperatures, and a lack of time emerged as the top three stressors. On average, workers across the Western region of the U.S. are experiencing a moderate level of stress, with younger workers reporting greater stressor pileup than their older counterparts. Retirement planning was cited as the most preferred stress management topic, regardless of demographic. Lastly, workers chose in-person counseling as the support modality that they would most likely utilize. This research provides a variety of stress management recommendations such as working with farm owners to increase the safety of their operation, investing in face-to-face counseling services, and utilizing community health workers as sources of support. The advance of 5G technology marks a significant evolution in wireless communications, characterized by ultra-high data rates, low latency, and massive connectivity across varied areas. A fundamental enabler of these capabilities is represented by beamforming, an advanced signal processing technique that focuses radio energy to a specific user equipment (UE), thereby enhancing signal quality—crucial for maximizing spectral efficiency. The work presents a classification of beamforming techniques, categorized according to the implementation within 5G New Radio (NR) architectures. Furthermore, the paper investigates beam management (BM) procedures, which are essential Layer 1 and Layer 2 mechanisms responsible for the dynamic configuration, monitoring, and maintenance of optimal beam pair links between gNodeBs and UEs. The article emphasizes the spectral spectrogram of Synchronization Signal Blocks (SSBs) generated under various deployment scenarios, illustrating how parameters such as subcarrier spacing (SCS), frequency band, and the number of SSBs influence the spectral occupancy and synchronization performance. These insights provide a technical foundation for optimizing initial access and beam tracking in high-frequency 5G deployments, particularly within Frequency Range (FR2). Additionally, the versatility of 5G’s time-frequency structure is demonstrated by the spectrogram analysis of SSBs in a variety of deployment scenarios. These results provide insight into how different configurations affect the synchronization signals’ temporal and spectral occupancy, which directly affects initial access, cell identification, and energy efficiency. A chili pepper variety and origin detection system that integrates a field-programmable gate array (FPGA) with an electronic nose (e-nose) is proposed in this paper to address the issues of variety confusion and origin ambiguity in the chili pepper market. The system uses the AIRSENSE PEN3 e-nose from Germany to collect gas data from thirteen different varieties of chili peppers and two specific varieties of chili peppers originating from seven different regions. Model training is conducted via the proposed lightweight convolutional neural network ChiliPCNN. By combining the strengths of a convolutional neural network (CNN) and a multilayer perceptron (MLP), the ChiliPCNN model achieves an efficient and accurate classification process, requiring only 268 parameters for chili pepper variety identification and 244 parameters for origin tracing, with 364 floating-point operations (FLOPs) and 340 FLOPs, respectively. The experimental results demonstrate that, compared with other advanced deep learning methods, the ChiliPCNN has superior classification performance and good stability. Specifically, ChiliPCNN achieves accuracy rates of 94.62% in chili pepper variety identification and 93.41% in origin tracing tasks involving Jiaoyang No. 6, with accuracy rates reaching as high as 99.07% for Xianjiao No. 301. These results fully validate the effectiveness of the model. To further increase the detection speed of the ChiliPCNN, its acceleration circuit is designed on the Xilinx Zynq7020 FPGA from the United States and optimized via fixed-point arithmetic and loop unrolling strategies. The optimized circuit reduces the latency to 5600 ns and consumes only 1.755 W of power, significantly improving the resource utilization rate and processing speed of the model. This system not only achieves rapid and accurate chili pepper variety and origin detection but also provides an efficient and reliable intelligent agricultural management solution, which is highly important for promoting the development of agricultural automation and intelligence. The ongoing decline in global biodiversity constitutes a critical challenge for environmental science, necessitating the prompt development of effective monitoring frameworks and conservation protocols to safeguard the structure and function of natural ecosystems. Recent progress in ecoacoustic monitoring, supported by advances in artificial intelligence, might finally offer scalable tools for systematic biodiversity assessment. In this study, we evaluate the performance of BirdNET, a state-of-the-art deep learning model for avian sound recognition, in the context of selected bird species characteristic of the Italian Alpine region. To this end, we assemble a comprehensive, manually annotated audio dataset targeting key regional species, and we investigate a variety of strategies for model adaptation, including fine-tuning with data augmentation techniques to enhance recognition under challenging recording conditions. As a baseline, we also develop and evaluate a simple Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) trained exclusively on our domain-specific dataset. Our findings indicate that BirdNET performance can be greatly improved by fine-tuning the pre-trained network with data collected within the specific regional soundscape, outperforming both the original BirdNET and the baseline CNN by a significant margin. These findings underscore the importance of environmental adaptation and data variability for the development of automated ecoacoustic monitoring devices while highlighting the potential of deep learning methods in supporting conservation efforts and informing soundscape management in protected areas. (1) Background: Understanding the distribution of Salmonella serovars in food, animals, and their environments is crucial for identifying infection sources and monitoring pathogen prevalence in the food chain. This study analysed Salmonella serovars in Poland from 2016 to 2020, focusing on their epidemiological significance. (2) Methods: Isolation of Salmonella was carried out following PN-EN ISO 6579 standards, and serotyping was performed using the White–Kauffmann–Le Minor scheme. A total of 7104 isolates were collected from food-producing animals, their environments, food of animal origin, feedingstuffs, and fertilisers. (3) Results: A total of 175 serovars were identified, with S. Enteritidis (n = 2905; 40.9%), S. Infantis (n = 1167; 16.4%), and S. Typhimurium (n = 360; 5.1%) being the most prevalent. Species-specific patterns were observed: S. Enteritidis dominated in chickens, ducks, and cattle; S. Kentucky in turkeys; S. Typhimurium in geese; and monophasic S. Typhimurium in pigs. S. Enteritidis and S. Infantis were most frequent in food of animal origin, especially broiler meat. In feedingstuffs, S. Agona was predominant, while fertilisers mostly contained S. Derby and S. Infantis. (4) Conclusions: The study highlights the source-dependent variety of Salmonella serovars and the importance of serotyping in tracing infection routes and preventing the spread of pathogens. Identifying the most common serovars supports the development of targeted preventive measures, including improved biosecurity, hygiene, and management practices to enhance food safety. Full article

Soybean production in Thailand faces significant challenges from malignant weed competition, potentially reducing yields by up to 37% and incurring annual economic losses of approximately USD 3.8 billion. Pre-emergence herbicides are critical for integrated weed management, but their efficacy varies depending on local conditions and soybean varieties. This study evaluates the performance of three pre-emergence herbicides, pendimethalin (1875 g a.i. ha−1), s-metolachlor (900 g a.i. ha−1), and flumioxazin (125 g a.i. ha−1), on weed control efficiency (WCE), soybean growth, phytotoxicity, and yield in Northeast Thailand using a randomised complete block design with two varieties (CM60 and Morkhor60) across rainy (2023) and dry (2024/2025) seasons. Herbicide performance varied seasonally: s-metolachlor showed optimal rainy season results (61.54% weed control efficiency at 63 days after herbicide application (DAA), with a yield of 1036 kg ha−1), while flumioxazin excelled in dry conditions (64.32% WCE, <4% phytotoxicity, and 1243 kg ha−1 yield). Pendimethalin performed poorly under wet conditions but improved in drier weather. Among five dominant weed species, Cyperus rotundus proved the most resilient. CM60 demonstrated superior herbicide tolerance and yield stability, particularly under rainy conditions. These results emphasise that season-specific herbicide selection and variety matching are crucial for herbicide resistance management and effective weed control in Thailand’s rainfed soybean systems. Environmental challenges such as drought, high temperatures, and salinity compromise grapevine physiology, reduce productivity, and negatively affect grape and wine quality. In recent years, foliar applications of biostimulants, antitranspirants, and phytohormones have emerged as promising strategies to enhance stress tolerance in grapevines. This review focuses on the main effects of salinity, drought, and high temperatures and the combined impact of drought and high temperatures on grapevines and examines how foliar applications influence grapevine responses under these specific stress conditions. Synthesizing the recent findings from the last ten years (160 articles), it provides direct insights into the potential of these compounds to alleviate each type of stress, highlighting their effects on grapevine physiology, yield components, and secondary metabolites in berries. While their mechanism of action is not entirely clear and their efficacy can vary depending on the type of compound used and the grapevine variety, most studies report a beneficial effect or no effect on grapevines under abiotic stresses (either single or combined). Future research is necessary to optimize the concentrations of these compounds and determine the appropriate number and timing of applications, particularly under open-field experiments. Additionally, studies should assess the effect of foliar applications under multiple abiotic stress conditions. In conclusion, integrating foliar applications into vineyard management represents a sustainable technique to mitigate abiotic stresses associated with climate change, such as salinity, water deficit, and heat stress, while preserving or enhancing the quality of grapes and wines. The contribution of small-scale sporting events to tourism sustainable development in local communities has been well recognized in the literature. Small-scale running events in particular are essential in the promotion of sustainable tourism in the community due to their localized impact. Although research has largely focused on the demand side—including participants, spectators, and host communities—limited attention has been given to the supply side, particularly the perspectives of sport event organizers and their role in implementing sustainable practices. This study aims to address this gap and answer key research questions that concern the factors which contribute to the success of these events in relation to their economic, social, and environmental impacts through the lens of the events’ primary decision-makers, their organizers. This study employs an exploratory research method, conducting interviews with twenty-five organizers of diverse Greek running events that represent a variety of geographical contexts and event characteristics of the country, based on their long-standing presence. Findings contribute to sustainable sport tourism literature by developing a theoretical framework which encompasses the three dimensions of sustainability, highlighting inclusivity as a key component within the social dimension. Results indicate that organizers perceive their running events as having a positive economic impact and enhancing social cohesion. They are also aware of the potential environmental impact, like trail preservation, and consequently implement responsible measures to protect the environment. Organizers share a variety of specific strategies and practical suggestions aimed at improving the sustainability of running events, such as managing waste effectively or improving accessibility for diverse participants, offering transferable insights for other event planners and local authorities. This paper showcases the key role of organizers in developing partnerships to implement effective sustainable sport event practices in the destination. Full article

Spinal cord injury (SCI) is a severe neurological condition that typically results in irreversible loss of motor and sensory function. Emerging evidence indicates that neuroplasticity, the ability of the nervous system to reorganize by forming new neural connections, plays a pivotal role in structural and functional recovery post-injury. This insight lays the groundwork for the development of rehabilitation and therapeutic strategies designed to leverage neuroplasticity. In this review, we offer an exhaustive overview of the neuroplastic alterations and mechanisms that occur following an SCI. We examine the role of neuroplasticity in functional recovery and outline therapeutic approaches designed to augment neuroplasticity post-SCI. The process of neuroplasticity post-SCI involves several physiological processes, such as neurogenesis, synaptic remodeling, dendritic spine formation, and axonal sprouting. Together, these processes contribute to the reestablishment of neural circuits and functional restoration. Enhancing neuroplasticity is a promising strategy for improving functional outcomes post-SCI; however, its effectiveness is influenced by numerous factors, including age, injury severity, time since the injury, and the specific therapeutic interventions employed. A variety of strategies have been suggested to promote neuroplasticity and expedite recovery, including pharmacological treatments, biomaterial-based therapies, gene editing, stem cell transplantation, and rehabilitative training. The combination of personalized rehabilitation programs with innovative therapeutic techniques holds considerable potential for maximizing the benefits of neuroplasticity and enhancing clinical outcomes in SCI management. Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) are powerful techniques that have been employed to analyze foodstuffs comprehensively. These techniques offer in-depth information about the chemical composition, structure, and spatial distribution of components in a variety of food products. Quantitative NMR is widely applied for precise quantification of metabolites, authentication of food products, and monitoring of food quality. Low-field 1H-NMR relaxometry is an important technique for investigating the most abundant components of intact foodstuffs based on relaxation times and amplitude of the NMR signals. In particular, information on water compartments, diffusion, and movement can be obtained by detecting proton signals because of H2O in foodstuffs. Saffron adulterations with calendula, safflower, turmeric, sandalwood, and tartrazine have been analyzed using benchtop NMR, an alternative to the high-field NMR approach. The fraudulent addition of Robusta to Arabica coffee was investigated by 1H-NMR Spectroscopy and the marker of Robusta coffee can be detected in the 1H-NMR spectrum. MRI images can be a reliable tool for appreciating morphological differences in vegetables and fruits. In kiwifruit, the effects of water loss and the states of water were investigated using MRI. It provides informative images regarding the spin density distribution of water molecules and the relationship between water and cellular tissues. 1H-NMR spectra of aqueous extract of kiwifruits affected by elephantiasis show a higher number of small oligosaccharides than healthy fruits do. One of the frauds that has been detected in the olive oil sector reflects the addition of hazelnut oils to olive oils. However, using the NMR methodology, it is possible to distinguish the two types of oils, since, in hazelnut oils, linolenic fatty chains and squalene are absent, which is also indicated by the 1H-NMR spectrum. NMR has been applied to detect milk adulterations, such as bovine milk being spiked with known levels of whey, urea, synthetic urine, and synthetic milk. In particular, T2 relaxation time has been found to be significantly affected by adulteration as it increases with adulterant percentage. The 1H spectrum of honey samples from two botanical species shows the presence of signals due to the specific markers of two botanical species. NMR generates large datasets due to the complexity of food matrices and, to deal with this, chemometrics (multivariate analysis) can be applied to monitor the changes in the constituents of foodstuffs, assess the self-life, and determine the effects of storage conditions. Multivariate analysis could help in managing and interpreting complex NMR data by reducing dimensionality and identifying patterns. NMR spectroscopy followed by multivariate analysis can be channelized for evaluating the nutritional profile of food products by quantifying vitamins, sugars, fatty acids, amino acids, and other nutrients. In this review, we summarize the importance of NMR spectroscopy in chemical profiling and quality assessment of food products employing magnetic resonance technologies and multivariate statistical analysis. Food Nutrients and Bioactive Compounds for Managing Metabolic Dysfunction-Associated Steatotic Liver Disease: A Comprehensive Review

Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) and its progressive form, metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH), are growing global health concerns. However, pharmacological therapies for MASLD/MASH have not yet been established. Dietary interventions and their bioactive components have been explored as strategies to mitigate MASLD and MASH progression. Although specific nutrients and bioactive compounds have exhibited potential therapeutic benefits, they also exacerbate adverse outcomes. In this comprehensive review, we synthesize the protective and exacerbating or sometimes dual effects of key macronutrients, including fatty acids (saturated, unsaturated, and trans fats) and carbohydrates (fructose, glucose, and sucrose), and bioactive compounds and micronutrients, in the context of MASLD management. The evidence suggests that coffee-derived compounds, such as caffeine and chlorogenic acid, may attenuate liver injury. However, the effects on MASLD severity are inconsistent. Diets high in saturated fatty acids exacerbate MASLD pathogenesis, whereas moderate intake (7–10% of total energy) may confer metabolic benefits. Other bioactive compounds and micronutrients have been explored for their diverse roles in hepatic lipid metabolism and insulin sensitivity. Although current evidence supports the therapeutic potential of specific dietary nutrients and bioactive compounds in the management of MASLD, inconsistencies in results highlight the need for more robust, well-controlled studies, including clinical trials, to clarify the preventive and therapeutic standards for balanced food interventions in MASLD management. In particular, well-designed clinical trials are necessary before clinical application. Although this is a narrative review and the literature retrieval may be biased, we covered a wide variety of substances. Full article

This article summarizes the scope and content of the Special Issue (SI) entitled “Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Cartography for a Sustainable World” and its contribution to the global discourse regarding sustainability concerns. At the heart of the discussion in this SI lies: (i) GIS, a valuable tool and a means for modeling, designing, and analyzing (spatial) data and processes related to the pursuance of sustainability objectives at both local and global scales; and (ii) Cartography as a discipline, which through maps and visualizations can convey the present state. The latter can play a vital role in educating, empowering, and raising public awareness with regard to sustainability concerns on the one hand, and can form a basis for policy-makers, scientists, and citizens for articulating effective sustainability strategies on the other. The fulfillment of the SI goals is attained through a collection of 26 papers that delve into and attempt to visualize sustainability achievements or concerns on a variety of themes in different parts of the world. More specifically, the content of this collection of papers can be categorized into the following sustainability-related themes: Urbanization, Transportation, Carbon Emissions Management, Infrastructure, Rural Development, and Climate Change. The main conclusion is that planning and implementing sustainability policies is a challenging and multi-level task, and must be carried out within a fully dynamic decision environment. Although some progress has already been made, more intensive and collective efforts from scientists, governments, the entrepreneurial community, and citizens are needed in order for the ambitious goals of Agenda 2030 to be reached. Systematic Review of Incidence of Cold-Welding Phenomenon in Use of Implants for Fracture Fixation and Collation of Removal Techniques

Introduction: Cold welding is an anecdotally well-known complication of removal of metalwork, most commonly at the screw–plate interface, and can often complicate extraction of implants after fracture fixation. Even though this phenomenon is familiar amongst the orthopedic community, there is relatively little formalized discussion or literature pertaining to its identification and management clinically. In addition, as far as we can establish, there does not seem to be a paper that discusses the various techniques described in the literature that are employed to combat cold welding. Methods: A systematic review was carried out in accordance with the PRISMA guidance, with two independent reviewers and a third person to arbitrate for any discrepancies. Manuscripts were identified using a search of PubMed/MEDLINE and Google Scholar. Studies eligible for inclusion were tabulated and the results categorized qualitatively with respect to the technique described for removal of the implants. Results: A total of 272 manuscripts were identified using a search of PubMed/MEDLINE and Google Scholar, and of these 14 were ruled to be eligible for inclusion reporting on 292 patients. Common locations of the cold-welded screws included femur, tibia, distal radius and clavicle. The most common technique for metalwork removal was using either bolt cutters or burrs to cut the plates between the screws and mobilize the screw and plate as one unit. Other techniques included using specialized removal tools and cutting between the screw head and body. There was no appreciable correlation between the specific anatomic location of the welded implant and the technique used in its removal. From the studies, it was found that, of the total number of screws (n = 1654), 58 (3.5%) were cold welded. The mean time to metalwork removal was 1104 days (36.8 months). Conclusions: As far as we can tell, this is the first systematic review pertaining to the phenomenon of cold welding specifically, and with this project we have collated the techniques used to remove implants affected by cold welding from a variety of different articles. Our work aims to highlight the relative paucity of literature in this area and provide a number of accessible and safe techniques to facilitate the removal of cold-welded implants in fracture fixation.
