Road density is a key indicator of human activity, causing habitat loss and fragmentation. Soil fungi, essential for ecosystem functioning, are sensitive bioindicators. Yet their responses to road density in urban green spaces are poorly characterized. Here, we analyzed the composition of the dominant fungal community, examined both the direct and indirect effects of road density on soil fungal communities, and identified specialist species. Focusing on Shanghai, China, a rapidly urbanizing city, we considered both edaphic factor and the road network. Through machine learning and Spearman correlation regression analyses, we quantified the relative importance of road density and edaphic factor in shaping fungal community composition and employed occupancy-specificity modeling to identify specialist taxa. Our results revealed that Ascomycota, Basidiomycota, Zygomycota, Rozellomycota, Chytridiomycota, and Glomeromycota were the dominant phyla, accounting for 93% of the retrieved ITS sequences. Road density was found to be the primary driver of fungal community composition, followed by soil lead and potassium concentrations. Notably, opportunistic pathogens (Acremonium spp.) correlated positively with road density (p < 0.001). Specialist species in high-density areas were primarily pathotrophic fungi, while saprotrophic fungi dominated in low-density areas. These findings highlight the need for urban planning strategies to mitigate the ecological impact of road density. Full article

Evaluating the economic value of carbon sinks is fundamental to advancing carbon market mechanisms and supporting sustainable regional development. This study focuses on Fujian Province in China, aiming to assess the spatiotemporal evolution of carbon sink value and analyze the influence of socio-economic drivers. Carbon sink values from 2000 to 2020 were estimated using Net Ecosystem Productivity (NEP) simulation combined with the carbon market valuation method. Eleven socio-economic variables were selected through correlation and multicollinearity testing, and their impacts were examined using Geographically and Temporally Weighted Regression (GTWR) at the county level. The results indicate that the total carbon sink value in Fujian declined from CNY 3.212 billion in 2000 to CNY 2.837 billion in 2020, showing a spatial pattern of higher values in the southern region and lower values in the north. GTWR analysis reveals spatiotemporal heterogeneity in the effects of socio-economic factors. For example, the influence of urbanization and retail sales of consumer goods shifts direction over time, while the effects of industrial structure, population, road, and fixed asset investment vary across space. This study emphasizes the necessity of incorporating spatial and temporal dynamics into carbon sink valuation. The findings suggest that northern areas of Fujian should prioritize ecological restoration, rapidly urbanizing regions should adopt green development strategies, and counties guided by investment and consumption should focus on sustainable development pathways to maintain and enhance carbon sink capacity. Port green spaces are essential protective barriers, enhancing safety and environmental resilience in high-activity port regions. Given the intensity of human activities in these areas, understanding the factors influencing the carbon sequestration capacity and ecological benefits of port green spaces is crucial for developing sustainable green ports. This study integrated field investigations and remote sensing data to estimate carbon density and carbon sequestration capacity in the Dongjiakou Port area, examining their relationship with port green space planning. The results indicated that carbon density in green spaces showed a significant negative correlation with the number of lanes in adjacent roads, where an increase in lane numbers corresponded to lower carbon density. Additionally, carbon density decreased significantly with increasing distance from the shipping center. In contrast, a significant positive correlation was observed between carbon density and distance from large water bodies, indicating that green spaces closer to large water bodies exhibited smaller carbon density. Infrastructure development in Dongjiakou substantially negatively impacted vegetation carbon sequestration capacity, with effects not reversible in the short term. However, green space enhancement efforts provided additional ecological benefits, leading to a 50.9 ha increase in green space area. When assessing carbon density in urbanizing areas, geographical influences should be prioritized. Furthermore, the long-term environmental impacts of urban expansion must be considered at the early planning stages, ensuring the implementation of proactive protective measures to mitigate potential ecological disruptions. Due to global warming, the impact of heat waves on the sentimental health of urban residents has significantly intensified. However, the associative mechanism between diverse urban functional layouts and residents’ emotions at the street scale remains underexplored. Taking the five core urban areas of Chengdu as an example, this study used natural language processing technology to quantify the sentiments in social media texts and combined traditional geographical information for spatial analysis and correlation analysis, to explore the spatial distribution pattern of sentiments during heat waves (SDHW), as well as the correlation between SDHW and the functional categories of streets (FCS). The findings are as follows: (1) There are significant differences in the spatial distribution pattern of residents’ sentiments in the five core urban areas, and positive emotions within the Second Ring Road exhibit a higher proportion than those of peripheral areas, while negative sentiments are more gathered in the eastern area. (2) The street categories of green space, park, and public show a significant promoting role on residents’ positive sentiments. (3) There is an association between the industrial and commercial categories and negative sentiments, and the impact of the traffic category on residents’ sentiments shows spatial differences. (4) The combination of the residential category and other functional categories has a strong correlation with sentiments, indicating that a reasonable functional combination within residential areas plays a crucial role in promoting residents’ positive sentiments. The current study revealed the influence mechanism of the functional categories of streets on residents’ sentiments during heat waves, providing a scientific basis from the sentimental dimension for the optimization of street functional categories, heat wave emergency management, and the construction of resilient cities. The inequity in the distribution of green spaces in megacities has a detrimental effect on the physical and mental well-being of their inhabitants, highlighting the necessity for careful and strategic urban planning, along with appropriate regulatory interventions. Nevertheless, scholarly articles addressing the equity of access to urban green spaces primarily concentrate on urban parks, with limited studies examining the influence of alternative types of green spaces. This research initially recognized and categorized informal green spaces (IGS) located within the Third Ring Road of Chengdu, utilizing the UGS-1m dataset and area of interest (AOI) data, in accordance with a well-defined classification framework. Then, the G2SFCA method and Gini coefficient were employed to assess the impact of IGS on the green space accessibility, especially scenario analysis of open and shared use of green space. The findings indicate that (1) IGS in the narrow sense constitute 21.2% of the overall green spaces within the study area, resulting in a reduction of the Gini coefficient by 0.103; (2) IGS in the broad sense, including public affiliated green spaces, shows an even more positive effect on improving the equity of green space supply, with a reduction of the Gini coefficient by 0.28; (3) there exists great spatial disparity in accessibility improvement effect by different types of IGS, so public policies must be customized to reflect local circumstances, taking into account the practicality and associated costs of management and maintenance of various IGS as well as accessibility enhancement; (4) certain older residential areas may not be amenable to effective enhancement through the use of IGS alone, and these should then adopt a multidimensional greening strategy such as green-roof. The findings of this research offer valuable insights for the planning and management of green spaces in densely populated urban environments, thereby aiding in the development of more refined models for the development of “Garden Cities”. As China steadily advances its “dual carbon” strategy, understanding the factors influencing carbon emission efficiency (CEE) is crucial for promoting high-quality urban development. This study examines Western Valley cities (WVCs), which play a key role in regional development and exhibit a distinct spatial structure. Using a super-efficiency slacks-based measure (SBM) model and economic and social panel data, we measured CEE and analyzed its spatiotemporal evolution. A geographically and temporally weighted regression (GTWR) was then applied to assess the spatiotemporal heterogeneity of influencing factors. Our findings revealed that the overall CEE of these cities remains relatively low, with a complex pattern of change. While efficiency levels in northern, southern, and central cities have gradually increased, there are notable differences in the quantity and spatial distribution of cities with high, relatively high, relatively low, and low efficiency over time. Additionally, the positive effects of technological investment, road density, population density, and per capita gross domestic product on CEE follow an increasing trend, whereas the negative impacts of energy intensity, green space ratio, secondary industry proportion, land use scale, and gas consumption gradually weaken. Additionally, the magnitude and direction of these effects vary significantly across northern, central, and southern cities. These findings provide important theoretical and practical insights for region-specific strategies aimed at reducing emissions and improving efficiency in WVCs. Full article

While extensive research has examined the contribution of urban parks to well-being, empirical evidence on the role of cultural attributes in historical urban parks and their impact on visitors’ well-being remains limited. This study explores the impact of physical characteristics of historical urban parks on well-being from the perspective of human settlement environment. Quantitative data were collected from 11 urban parks in Wuhan, China, combining online crowdsourcing for physical characteristic assessments and questionnaire surveys for psychological evaluations. Machine learning techniques, spatial analysis, and statistical methods including multistep regression and Bootstrap sampling were employed to test our hypotheses. Our results demonstrate that objective physical features—including park area, green coverage rate, green space shape index, and the proportion of heritage landmarks—positively influence well-being, whereas road density exhibits a negative association. Cultural perception and place attachment serve as significant mediators between physical characteristics and well-being outcomes, with the proportion of heritage landmarks influencing well-being through a dual mediation path. Additionally, we found interaction effects between physical and psychological factors, with education level moderating the relationship between cultural perception and well-being. These findings advance environmental psychology theory by elucidating how historical elements foster unique pathways to well-being, distinct from those offered by conventional green spaces. Our research provides evidence-based guidance for historical urban park design and renovation in the context of urban renewal, where balancing preservation and modernization presents significant challenges. Urban vitality (UV) is a critical indicator for measuring the level of sustainable urban development, closely associated with environmental factors such as population density, economic activity, and spatial utilization efficiency. However, traditional methods face significant limitations in capturing the heterogeneity and nonlinear relationships between urban vitality and its influencing factors. This study suggests an interpretable machine learning framework to address the aforementioned issues. It combines a gradient boosting decision tree (GBDT) model with the SHapley Additive exPlanation (SHAP) framework to examine the urban vitality distribution characteristics and factors that influence them in Beijing’s fifth ring road. The main findings include the following: Urban vitality within Beijing’s fifth ring road exhibits significant spatial clustering and positive correlations, with clear spatial heterogeneity. The plot ratio (PR) exerts a notable positive influence on urban vitality, while green space accessibility (DG) demonstrates the strongest negative impact. The building density (BD), in contrast, shows a strong negative correlation with urban vitality. Variables such as the NDVI, average housing price (AHP), and road network density (RND) contribute significantly to urban vitality, reflecting the combined effects of vegetation coverage, economic conditions, and transportation layout. The findings provide a quantitative analytical tool for urban planning, facilitating resource optimization, improving urban vitality, and supporting scientific and rational decision-making. Urban green spaces face increasing pressure to reconcile ecological conservation with rising public demand as urbanization accelerates. Yet the spatial coupling of human needs and natural provisioning in the urban–rural fringe remains insufficiently understood. Focusing on the country park cluster in Beijing’s Huitian region, this study develops an integrated assessment framework—combining ecological importance, ecological connectivity potential, construction suitability, and recreational demand—to evaluate nature suitability and pinpoint spatial mismatches in human–nature interactions. Ecological importance is quantified through ecological sensitivity analysis and InVEST-based habitat-quality modeling, while ecological connectivity potential is estimated via normalized least-cost corridor analysis. Construction suitability is derived from the proportion of artificial surfaces and road network density, and recreational demand is measured by population concentration, facility density, and transport accessibility. These metrics are synthesized to map nature-suitability patterns and reveal divergences between human demand and ecological provisioning. The results show a pronounced north–south gradient in ecological importance, with Dongxiaokou Ditch and Dongxiaokou Forest Park emerging as ecological hotspots. Nineteen ecological source patches are identified, with the strongest connectivity in the southern sector of Dongxiaokou Forest Park. Areas of high construction suitability coincide with well-developed infrastructure, whereas recreational demand clusters around Tiantongyuan and Beiqing Road. Natural and artificial elements intertwine to form an ecological core of 870.74 hm2, yet 13.29% of the study area exhibits mismatches—particularly residential zones lacking green-space access. Over-development within Dongxiaokou Urban Recreation Park likewise falls short of ecological expectations. The study offers targeted recommendations—ecological protection, facility optimization, green-space enhancement, and the integration of multifunctional green infrastructure—and provides a transferable framework for coordinating human and natural systems in other urban–rural fringe contexts. Rapid urbanization in the Global South poses challenges to ecological integrity, cultural heritage, and equitable access to green infrastructure. This study evaluates the effectiveness of recent green infrastructure projects in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, including flagship parks and upgraded road corridors, through the lens of the Urban Nature Futures Framework (UNFF). To operationalize the UNFF’s three perspectives—Nature for Nature (NN), Nature for Society (NS), and Nature as Culture (NC)—a context-specific set of indicators was developed through the existing literature, global assessment frameworks, and stakeholder consultations. A mixed-methods approach, combining structured surveys with both qualitative and quantitative thematic analysis, was applied across four stakeholder groups: residents, park visitors, corridor users, and experts. The results indicate that while social benefits (NS) are widely recognized, ecological (NN) and cultural (NC) dimensions receive comparatively less emphasis. Regression analysis shows that education, employment, and green space use frequency significantly shape perceptions of NS and NC, while NN are more consistently shared across groups. This study demonstrates the practical value of the UNFF as an assessment tool and offers a replicable methodology for evaluating multifunctional green infrastructure. The findings underscore the need for more inclusive, biodiversity-positive, and culturally grounded urban renewal strategies. These insights are relevant for planners and policymakers aiming to foster equitable and resilient urban environments in rapidly growing cities. Full article

The built environment is the key to creating vibrant urban spaces that contribute to the health and sustainability of cities. Studies have demonstrated that a reasonable built environment helps to stimulate urban vitality. Nevertheless, there are limitations to the understanding that three-dimensional (3D) built environment indicators from the ‘human perspective’ can substantially affect urban vitality. This study provides an empirical analysis of Xi’an, a city with both traditional historical blocks and a modern city landscape. By applying the ordinary least square model and the geographically weighted regression model, this study explores the impacts of the two-dimensional (2D) and 3D built environments on urban vitality. Results show: (1) the urban vitality exhibits significant spatial and temporal difference characteristics; (2) the 3D built environment exerts a greater influence on urban vitality than 2D; (3) taking weekdays for instance, the indicators of green space and road space (e.g., normalized difference vegetation index (−0.092), green view index (−0.104), road density (−0.021), and enclosure (−0.089)) are negatively correlated with urban vitality, while the indicators of building space and mixed function (e.g., building density, floor area ratio, points of interest (POI) mixing degree, and 3D mixing degree) present a positive effect. To improve urban vitality, the study provides suggestions from the perspective of 3D and human perception, which will contribute to the meticulous practice of urban design. Full article

Constructing visually appealing public spaces has become an important issue in contemporary urban renewal and design. Existing studies mostly focus on single dimensions (e.g., vegetation ratio), lacking a large-scale integrated analysis of urban color and visual elements. To address this gap, this study employs semantic segmentation and color computation on a massive street-view image dataset encompassing 56 cities worldwide, comparing eight machine learning models in predicting Visual Aesthetic Perception Scores (VAPSs). The results indicate that LightGBM achieves the best overall performance. To unpack this “black-box” prediction, we adopt an interpretable ensemble approach by combining LightGBM with Shapley Additive Explanations (SHAPs). SHAP assigns each feature a quantitative contribution to the model’s output, enabling transparent, post hoc explanations of how individual color metrics and visual elements drive VAPS. Our findings suggest that the vegetation ratio contributes the most to VAPS, but once greening surpasses a certain threshold, a “saturation effect” emerges and can no longer continuously enhance visual appeal. Excessive Sky Visibility Ratio can reduce VAPS. Moderate road visibility may increase spatial layering and vibrancy, whereas overly dense building significantly degrades overall aesthetic quality. While keeping the dominant color focused, moderate color saturation and complexity can increase the attractiveness of street views more effectively than overly uniform color schemes. Our research not only offers a comprehensve quantitative basis for urban visual aesthetics, but also underscores the importance of balancing color composition and visual elements, offering practical recommendations for public space planning, design, and color configuration. Quantification and Analysis of Factors Influencing Territorial Spatial Conflicts in the Gully Region of the Loess Plateau: A Case Study of Qingyang City, Gansu Province, China

The gullied Loess Plateau, a region characterized by the overlapping of ecological fragility and energy abundance in China, requires urgent analysis of its territorial spatial conflict mechanisms to harmonize human–environment relationships. This study integrated multi-temporal remote sensing data (1990–2020) to develop a Comprehensive Spatial Conflict Index (CSCI) and applied the Optimal Parameter-based Geographical Detector (OPGD) to unravel the driving mechanisms of territorial spatial evolution in Qingyang City, Gansu Province. The results revealed that: (1) Territorial spaces exhibit a transition pattern of ecological restoration, urban expansion, and agricultural contraction. Forest and grassland ecological spaces increased by 1.42 percentage points (to 13.14%) and 1.26 percentage points (to 49.29%), respectively, while industrial-mining production spaces expanded sevenfold (0.01% to 0.08%), and agricultural production spaces decreased by 3.36 percentage points. (2) Spatial conflicts transitioned through three phases: ① A low-intensity stabilization phase (1990–2000), with 90.55% of areas under weak and moderately weak conflict (CSCI ≤ 0.4); ② A moderate conflict contraction phase (2000–2010), where weak conflict zones surged by 28.18 percentage points (13.06% → 41.24%), with moderate and moderately weak spatial conflict (0.2–0.6) decreasing by 28.27 percentage points (86.06% → 57.79%); ③ A moderately strong to strong expansion phase (2010–2020), with moderate and moderately strong conflict areas rising to 16.82%. Strong conflict zones (CSCI ≥ 0.8) expanded to 0.61%, spatially clustered in the Xifeng urban area and the Malian–Pu River corridor, showing significant positive correlations with gully density (>3.5 km∙km−2) and nighttime light index (NL). (3) The interaction between NDVI and land use intensity (LUI) dominated conflict patterns (q = 0.2583). In northern energy development zones (Huanxian County), LUI and precipitation (PRE) synergistically intensified landslide risks, while facility agriculture in central plateau farmlands (Ningxian County) triggered groundwater overexploitation. The coupling of road density (RND) and population (POP) factors (q = 0.1892) formed a transportation–population axial belt compression. Policy interventions exhibited spatial heterogeneity: the Grain-for-Green Program increased weak conflict zones by 28.18 percentage points, whereas wind power development in the Huanxian–Huachi northern belt escalated moderately strong to strong conflict zones by 3.6 percentage points. A three-dimensional governance framework integrating geomorphological adaptation, development phasing, and ecological compensation is proposed to optimize territorial spatial planning in the gullied Loess Plateau. Urban green spaces (UGSs) provide recreational and cultural services to urban residents and play an important role in mental health. This study uses big data mining techniques to analyze 62 urban parks in the Changsha–Zhuzhou–Xiangtan urban agglomeration (CZXUA) based on data such as points of interest (POIs), areas of interest (AOIs), and user comments from the popular social media platform Dianping. In addition, the authors apply sentiment analysis using perceptual dictionaries combined with geographic information data to identify text emotions. A structural equation model (SEM) was constructed in IBM SPSS AMOS 24.0 software to investigate the relationship between five external features, five types of cultural services, nine landscape elements, four environmental factors, and tourist emotions. The results show that UGS external features, cultural services, landscape elements, and environmental factors all have positive effects on residents’ emotions, with landscape elements having the greatest impact. The other factors show similar effects on residents’ moods. In various UGSs, natural elements such as vegetation and water tend to evoke positive emotions in residents, while artificial elements such as roads, squares, and buildings elicit more varied emotional responses. This research provides science-based support for the design and management of urban parks. Full article

Walking has been studied extensively in recent years. However, one is still hard pressed to find research examining what makes urban settings of different sizes across the Atlantic Ocean conducive to walking, especially in the presence of greenways and green open spaces. Streets and urban greenways both enable flows. Streets are mostly utilized to enable the flow of motorized traffic and people while greenways aim to guarantee the flow of water, nature, biodiversity, and people. Streets are designed to artificially separate motorized traffic from pedestrians, greenways are designed to create the natural conditions for a harmonious co-existence of people with nature. How would street users benefit from streetscape and urban design improvements aimed at promoting the peaceful, silent, and harmonious co-existence of nature, people, and vehicles? Distinct sets of codes and norms dictate how individuals ought to utilize urban public spaces and greenways. We argue that said codes ought to also be aimed at increasing the quality of public spaces and not only their flow capacities. This paper examines streets and greenways in Ballyclare, Leiria, and Scottsdale. We utilize Ballyclare’s High Street and Six Mile Water greenway, Leiria’s city centre and Lis River greenway, as well as Scottsdale Road and the Indian Bend Wash greenbelt and a segment of the Arizona Canal to analyse the positive characteristics and shortcomings of successful streets and greenway systems in three distinct geographic contexts: U.K., Southern European, and North American. The findings comprise the distillation of new results in the analysis of spaces of flows and permanence across the Atlantic Ocean. Full article
