In research on verbal periphrases, analyzability constitutes a central parameter, both for describing the grammaticalization processes to which these constructions are subject and for defining their categorical status. This paper focuses on a specific verbal periphrasis: [tardar en + infinitive]. Its historical development is examined, along with the recent emergence of a dative of interest in this construction, drawing on quantitative data from various digital corpora. The findings show that over time en became the predominant linking element between the auxiliary and the infinitive and that the order of the components of the periphrasis gradually became fixed. The data also reveal that the new pattern with the dative of interest occurs more frequently in informal written language and colloquial registers, where the object pronoun contributes to clarifying the construction’s potentially opaque meaning. We argue that grammaticalization has reduced the syntactic analyzability of the construction, whereas the incorporation of the dative of interest points to speakers’ perception of tardar as an independent verb, thereby reflecting increased analyzability. This case study illustrates that the analyzability of a construction is not necessarily unidirectional, but may fluctuate over time, shifting in different directions at distinct historical stages. Drawing-based social deduction games require artificial intelligence (AI) agents to infer semantic information from incomplete and evolving visual inputs under asymmetric information conditions. In this study, we address the problem of recognizing drawing targets from partial sketch sequences toward constructing an AI player for Drawing Werewolf, a collaborative drawing game derived from the Werewolf (Mafia) genre. Using stroke-based representations from the “Quick, Draw!” dataset, we formulate incremental sketch classification as a sequence modeling task and compare a unidirectional Long Short-Term Memory (UniLSTM) model with a Transformer-based model under realistic online inference constraints. Experiments were conducted on 44 animal classes, evaluating classification accuracy at different drawing stages ranging from one stroke to completed sketches. The results demonstrate that both models improve as additional strokes are observed; however, the Transformer consistently outperforms UniLSTM across all stroke counts. The performance gap is particularly pronounced in early-stage prediction, where sketches are highly incomplete and ambiguous. Class-wise analyses further reveal that the advantage of self-attention depends on visual characteristics and drawing progression. These findings indicate that self-attention mechanisms are well suited for modeling partial sketch sequences and provide valuable insights for designing AI players capable of real-time inference in drawing-based social deduction games. An optimized numerical model is proposed, accompanied by an in-depth investigation of the characteristics of rod and tube drawing processes and a critical review of previous studies on tube drawing from the perspectives of practicality and accuracy. An automatic simulation framework, specifically a dual-step simulation scheme incorporating a specialized remeshing function, is presented to enhance the applicability and accuracy of simulations for rod and tube drawing processes. The effectiveness of the proposed finite element (FE) analysis model is evaluated by comparing FE-predicted results with those reported in the literature. Using typical examples of various multi-pass drawing processes, including both unidirectional and alternately driven cases, the importance of the proposed FE model and its automatic analysis capability in improving engineering productivity is demonstrated. As the work hardening rate increases during the cold drawing of non-heat-treated steel (NHT steel), a significant loss in ductility and toughness can occur, leading to reduced formability and part quality. In this study, a bidirectional drawing process consisting of alternating forward and reverse passes is proposed to mitigate these issues and enhance the mechanical performance of the steel. Mechanical property evaluations, including tensile testing and three-point bending tests, were conducted to assess the effects of bidirectional drawing compared to conventional unidirectional drawing. The results showed that the bidirectionally drawn wire maintained a similar tensile strength to that of the unidirectionally drawn wire at a 70% area reduction, while exhibiting a 12% improvement in elongation. Microstructural analysis revealed grain refinement and reduced texture anisotropy in the bidirectionally drawn specimens, contributing to the observed enhancement in ductility. These findings indicate that bidirectional drawing is a promising approach for improving the formability and overall quality of high-strength, NHT steel components. Full article

The series-connected DRU-MMC hybrid converter, with its compact size and cost-effectiveness, presents an attractive solution for long-distance offshore wind power transmission. However, its application is limited by the DRU’s unidirectional power flow and the voltage mismatch between the auxiliary MMC and the onshore MMC during black-start operations. To overcome these challenges, a four-stage black-start strategy utilizing an auxiliary step-down transformer connected to the onshore MMC is proposed. The proposed strategy operates as follows: The onshore MMC first lowers its valve-side voltage via an auxiliary transformer, enabling reduced DC-side voltage. With the DRU bypassed, the offshore MMC draws startup power through the DC link, then switches to V/f mode with wind turbine curtailment to reduce DC current below the DRU bypass threshold. After stable, low-power operation, the DRU is integrated. The onshore MMC then restores rated DC voltage and disconnects the transformer, allowing gradual wind turbine reconnection to complete black-start. The simulation results confirm the approach’s feasibility under conditions where all wind turbines operate in grid-following mode. Full article

This study explores the intricate interconnections between greenwashing, environmental performance (ESG), firm-specific characteristics, board composition, firm age, size, leverage, carbon emissions (CO2), and financial performance. By applying a combination of panel VAR/GMM estimation, robust least squares regression, and Granger causality tests, the research draws upon comprehensive data spanning from 2009 to 2022 sourced from the Chinese Research Data Services Platform (CNRDS), Bloomberg, and Refinitiv. The dataset comprises 312 listed Chinese firms, yielding a total of 5335 observations. The findings reveal that past return on equity acts as a reinforcing mechanism for both financial performance and ESG outcomes, as it positively affects subsequent returns and environmental engagement. However, its influence on firm size, board structure, and Tobin’s Q is statistically insignificant. Additionally, greenwashing demonstrates a dual character: while it reflects strong internal consistency, it also significantly shapes environmental outcomes and market perceptions. Firm size stands out as a pivotal determinant. It exhibits high persistence over time and plays a crucial role in shaping governance structures and capital allocation decisions. Moreover, board composition is positively associated with firm size. Leverage and return on assets show consistent temporal persistence and exert substantial influence on various firm attributes. Although leverage may contribute positively under favorable conditions, its overall impact on sustainability and governance practices appears limited. Higher carbon emissions are associated with increased ESG disclosures, whereas stronger ESG performance contributes to emission reduction and modestly enhances financial outcomes. Tobin’s Q also emerges as a critical factor, significantly influencing sustainability practices. This suggests that firms respond to investor expectations by improving their ESG performance. Results from the robust least squares regression underscore the dominant roles of firm size, Tobin’s Q, and leverage in driving financial performance. In contrast, ESG scores, CO2 emissions, and greenwashing do not exhibit any statistically significant direct effects on financial performance. Granger causality tests confirm unidirectional relationships from financial performance to key structural variables such as size, leverage, firm age, and Tobin’s Q. A notable bidirectional causal link is observed between return on assets and return on equity. However, sustainability and governance-related variables show no causal impact on financial performance. Overall, the study acknowledges limitations and offers policy recommendations along with directions for future research. Full article

Communication for development and social change is an evolving field both in research and practice, transcending paradigms of conventional communication towards engaging and somewhat exposing some of the real-life communicative disorders experienced by communities. While public health and communication for development and social change operate from diverse paradigmatic thinking and are applied quite independently as disciplinary fields of study, health communication converges these fields in research and practice. In this paper, I discuss these interdisciplinary perspectives that draw from communication for development and social change principles and public health through a process of divergence and convergence towards new ways of thinking about decision making. Much of this discourse stems from understanding many health problems as a development problem first, one that recognises the role of community responses during pandemics yet at the same time places the agency back with individuals to make informed choices. Communicating for health decision making from this perspective is what I call Communicating for Health-as-Development (C4HD). C4HD foregrounds health as development, which caters to the messy, unidirectional, non-process-orientated, non-measurable and often non-data-driven approaches to health outcomes. It is in these messy health communication efforts that real development takes place. This paper, using examples from HIV and COVID-19, discusses these ongoing developments in the field and the convergence of public health and communication for development and social change from an interdisciplinary perspective, by exploring three key concepts: community engagement to influence decision making, community agency and ownership, and context and collaboration, which contribute to understanding communication for health-as-development. As the basis for characterizing traffic conditions in waterways, fundamental characteristics of waterway traffic streams are of great practical significance in ensuring traffic safety and improving navigation efficiency. In the study of the fundamental characteristics of waterway traffic flow, although some scholars consider the length or area of the vessel, few scholars take the displacement of the vessel into account and make light of the influence of the three-dimensional size of the vessel. This paper proposes a method for defining the fundamental characteristics of a waterway traffic stream considering vessel size. This method defines fundamental characteristics in terms of vessel displacement and quantifies flow, density, and speed based on vessel trajectories in time–space regions. This study selects a unidirectional channel in the south trough waters of Shanghai Harbor for a case study and draws the fundamental diagram of the waterway traffic stream while considering vessel number and displacement. The comparison result shows that the definition considering vessel displacement can more accurately reflect the actual traffic condition of the selected channel. Finally, based on the flow–density subgraph of the waterway traffic stream (measured by vessel displacement), this paper constructs a traffic stream model and derives critical parameters. The definition proposed in this study effectively characterizes how vessels occupy the time–space resources of waterways, revealing the inherent mechanisms governing waterway traffic stream and, thus, enhancing accuracy in describing fundamental relationships among waterway stream characteristics. The outcome of this research underlies how the waterway traffic stream is measured, operated, and managed to ensure safety and productivity. Full article

Urban–rural integration is a top priority in social development and an urgent requirement for vigorously promoting rural revitalization. However, the current development of urban–rural integration in China still faces issues such as an unreasonable urban–rural industrial structure, unidirectional flow of rural population, and low sense of belonging among rural residents. Based on this, this paper selects eight cities from the Greater Bay Area as examples, organizing urban–rural integration development data from 1986 to 2022. It employs principal component analysis to quantitatively evaluate the evolutionary trend of urban–rural integration, constructs a fixed-effect panel quantile regression model to explore the factors influencing urban–rural integration and its spatiotemporal evolution, and uses threshold effects and interaction effects to test the threshold and application requirements for maximizing the benefits of urban–rural integration driving mechanisms, drawing empirical insights from comparisons with other bay areas around the world. The research found the following: First, between 1986 and 2022, the development of urban–rural integration in the Greater Bay Area steadily progressed, with gradually emerging effects, and industrial integration and population integration made significant contributions to the development of urban–rural integration. Second, the driving mechanisms of market economics, government intervention, and social fusion significantly impact urban–rural integration, with the influence of market economics being the most significant. Third, the impacts of the three driving mechanisms on urban–rural integration show temporal and spatial differences. In terms of time, market economics and government intervention always have a positive impact, while social fusion shows a “suppressing-promoting” trend, with a lower impact coefficient. Spatially, there are differences in strategies and priorities for promoting urban–rural integration in each region. Fourth, all three driving mechanisms exhibit threshold effects, and the explanatory power of any two interacting driving mechanisms for urban–rural integration development is stronger than that of any single mechanism. Notably, the combined interaction effect of the three driving mechanisms has the highest impact coefficient. The driving mechanisms should be implemented according to the principles of “synchronization, heterogeneity, and categorization”. Full article

One of the obstacles preventing change of teaching methods in schools is teachers’ traditional conceptualizations of ‘teaching’ as transmissive and teacher-centered. The aim of this study was to track changes in experienced teachers’ concept of ‘teaching’, following their exposure to attentive teaching. This is a dialogical method in which the learners represent their concepts in drawings and written explanations, and discuss them with their teacher and peers. Method: This was a multiple-case study. The participants were three teachers who attended an attentive teaching professional development course. They drew ‘teaching’ in the first, sixth, and the last, fifteenth, session, and provided explanations of their drawings. Findings: At the start of the course, they described teaching as a unidirectional process of transmitting knowledge. In the middle, they became more aware of the students as individuals who should be listened to. By the end of the course, teaching was portrayed as multi-directional (and enjoyable), so that all the participants, including the teacher, teach and learn from each other. Conclusions: This study shows that by studying, experiencing, and implementing attentive teaching, it is possible to change experienced teachers’ traditional beliefs without directly challenging them, and that drawings can track the changes’ trajectory. Existing approaches for the 3D modeling of tunnels suffer from several problems, such as highly difficult data acquisition, redundancy of model data, large computational burden, and the inability of the resulting models to be monolithic. Therefore, solutions to the tunnel network modeling problem for complex structures need to be proposed and elaborated in detail. In this paper, a construction method for a three-dimensional tunnel general monomer model based on parallel pathfinding is proposed. Widely used tunnel CAD drawings are analyzed and read, a disordered arc ensemble intersection trend decision method is developed, and an automatic path extraction solution algorithm for unidirectional modeling of tunnel centerlines is constructed. By constructing and splicing the surface elements of the 3D model, a monomeric 3D tunnel model representing the complex network structure is finally obtained. Moreover, the modeling of shafts is realized based on the monomer model, allowing for the three-dimensional topological relationships between different sub-levels of the tunnel and the ground to be established. The automatic modeling method proposed in this paper is applied to the digital twin platform of a filling project in a mining area in Gansu province, China. The experimental results demonstrate that the 3D tunnel models constructed in this way have a smaller data volume, higher modeling accuracy, and more stable growth of modeling speed. Full article

An experimental method for non-standard off-axis tension tests of unidirectional composites is developed. A new oblique end-tab is designed to eliminate stress concentration and in-plane bending moment induced by off-axis tension loading. Finite element analysis and experiments on Polyetheretherketone (PEEK)/AS4 unidirectional thermoplastic composites (CFRTP) were conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed testing method. Simulation and test results demonstrate that the use of oblique end-tabs eradicates stress concentration and bending movements. The digital image correlation (DIC) method was used to help investigate the full-field tension/shear coupling deformation response of the off-axis specimen. Test results show significant nonlinear behaviour and inhomogeneous strain distribution under tension/shear combined stresses. A fractographic study was carried out to study the damage mechanisms under a tension/shear combined stress state. Specimens with 30°, 45° and 60° off-axis angles, fail in tension/shear mixed failure mode. Fracture surface morphology indicates that matrix plastic deformation and ductile drawing under tension/shear coupled stress state induced the nonlinear stress-strain response. Full article

Currently, FRP composite tubes are drawing increasing attention in many industrial applications, due to their excellent mechanical and lightweight properties, with reduced energy consumption and enhanced sustainability. This study investigates the failure mechanisms and crashworthiness performance of glass and carbon fibre reinforced polymer (GFRP and CFRP) composite tubes under low velocity transverse impact. Finite element methods were developed to establish numerical models to predict the failure responses of FRP composite tubes with a complex ply sequence of both woven and unidirectional layers. In the modelling, continuum damage mechanics and cohesive zone method were used to calculate the intralaminar and interlaminar failure behaviours, respectively, in FRP composite tubes. The numerical models were validated by corresponding experiments, and the effects of the impact energy and material type were investigated. The experimental results show that the initial impact energy does not significantly affect the specific energy absorption (SEA) and peak force (PF) of GFRP composite tubes, and the SEA and PF are generally around 0.5 kJ/kg and 600 N, respectively, when the impact energy varies from 10 J to 50 J. Failure mechanism analyses show that GFRP tubes and CFRP tubes with totally unidirectional plies present global bending deformation with significant matrix damage, and CFRP tubes with “hybrid layer type” exhibit local penetration with severe fibre and matrix damage. The crashworthiness analyses indicate that CFRP tubes perform better in SEA while GFRP tubes possess smaller PF when subjected to low velocity transverse impact. Full article

Longitudinal Relationship between Cognitive Function and Health-Related Quality of Life among Middle-Aged and Older Patients with Diabetes in China: Digital Usage Behavior Differences

Background: Cognitive function and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) are important issues in diabetes care. According to the China Association for Aging, it is estimated that by 2030, the number of elderly people with dementia in China will reach 22 million. The World Health Organization reports that by 2044, the number of people with diabetes in China is expected to reach 175 million. Methods: Cohort analyses were conducted based on 854 diabetic patients aged ≥45 years from the third (2015) and fourth (2018) survey of the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS). Correlation analysis, repeated-measures variance analysis, and cross-lagged panel models were used to measure the difference in digital usage behavior in the established relationship. Results: The results show that the cognitive function of middle-aged and older diabetic patients is positively correlated with HRQoL. HRQoL at T1 could significantly predict cognitive function at T2 (PCS: B = 0.12, p < 0.01; MCS: B = 0.14, p < 0.01). This relationship is more associated with individual performance than digital usage behavior. Conclusions: Unidirectional associations may exist between cognitive function and HRQoL among middle-aged and older Chinese diabetes patients. In the future, doctors and nurses can recognize the lowering of self-perceived HRQoL of middle-aged and older diabetic patients, and thus draw more attention to their cognitive function, in turn strengthening the evaluation, detection, and intervention of their cognitive function. Urakami Memory and the Two Popes: The Disrupting of an Abstracted Nuclear Discourse

Since 1945, official Catholic discourse around nuclear weapons has condemned their existence on the one hand and supported them as deterrents on the other. This paper argues the largely abstracted discourse on nuclear weapons within the World Church has been disrupted by voices of Urakami in Nagasaki since at least 1981, as the Vatican has re-considered both memory and Catholic treatments of the bombing of this city since the end of World War II. On 9 August 1945, a plutonium A-bomb, nicknamed ‘Fat Man’, was detonated by the United States over the northern suburb of Nagasaki known as Urakami. Approximately 8500 Catholics were killed by the deployment of the bomb in this place that was once known as the Rome of the East. Many years on, two popes visited Nagasaki, the first in 1981 and the second in 2019. Throughout the period from John Paul II’s initial visit to Pope Francis’s visit in 2019, the Catholic Church’s official stance on nuclear weapons evolved significantly. Pope John Paul II’s contribution to the involvement in peace discourses of Catholics who had suffered the bombing attack in Nagasaki has been noted by scholars previously, but we should not assume influence in 1981 was unidirectional. Drawing upon interviews conducted in the Catholic community in Nagasaki between 2014 and 2019, and by reference to the two papal visits, this article re-evaluates the ongoing potentialities and concomitant weaknesses of religious discourse. Such discourses continue to exert an influence on international relations in the enduring atomic age. Full article
