The human microbiome plays a crucial role in health, being involved in both physiological and pathological processes. The highly dynamic microbiome composition is shaped by different factors, which also may affect host–microbe interactions. Although this relationship is complex and incompletely understood, the interplay between the microbiome, oxidative stress and inflammation is increasingly recognized. Microbial metabolites and specific probiotic strains contribute to maintaining redox homeostasis through multiple pathways, such as regulating the immune system and inflammatory processes or influencing mitochondrial reactive oxygen species production and antioxidant signaling pathways. Oxidative stress and inflammation, in turn, may affect the microbiome by altering microbial diversity and function. These disturbances are believed to create a vicious cycle that further disrupts homeostasis and promotes the appearance of different diseases. This review synthesizes current evidence on the interplay between the microbiome, oxidative stress, and inflammation, highlighting its relevance to both physiological and pathological states. Although metabolic, renal, and cardiovascular disorders frequently coexist, little is known about how illness combinations affect prognosis. Cardiovascular disease (CVD), which can manifest as coronary artery disease (CAD), stroke, heart failure (HF), arrhythmias, and sudden cardiac death, is more likely to develop in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD). This link is closer with regard of heart failure (HF) and renal dysfunction, in which a reciprocal relationship has been demonstrated, with the initial illness of one organ causing the progressive dysfunction of the other system. Common risk factors for both illnesses include obesity, diabetes, metabolic disorders, hypertension, and dyslipemia. Theoretically, each of these factors accelerates the atherosclerotic process or directly damages the endothelium through inflammatory, oxidative, and pro-thrombotic pathways, which in turn causes the beginning of heart dysfunction and renal function deterioration. Although the mechanisms and causes have been identified, there are still a number of unanswered questions regarding classification, development, monitoring, and preventive aspects. Furthermore, the absence of reliable data on cardiac and renal outcomes across different stages contributes to creating confusion in CKM classification and management. This paper discusses the current challenges and perspectives in CKM definition and assessment proposing a specific diagnostic and laboratory fingerprint. Full article

Electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) have emerged as a prevalent substitute for conventional cigarettes, garnering perceptions of being a safer option for health. Nicotine addicts use e-cigarettes to cease smoking. These products have also become common among young people because of their taste, smell, and attractive appearance. However, accumulating experimental and clinical evidence indicates that e-cigarette use is not risk-free. The inhalation of e-cigarette aerosols exposes users and their non-using peers to a complex mixture of chemical compounds, including aldehydes, heavy metals, and flavoring agents, many of which possess pro-oxidative and pro-inflammatory properties. This review summarizes and critically analyzes current evidence on the molecular and cellular mechanisms underlying the biological effects of e-cigarette aerosols. Particular attention is given to excessive production of reactive oxygen species, mitochondrial dysfunction, DNA damage, and the activation of redox-sensitive signaling pathways, including NF-κB and NRF2. These molecular alterations may trigger acute and, with prolonged exposure, chronic oxidative stress and inflammation, which in turn can affect gene expression, protein function, and metabolic pathways. While molecular and experimental studies often demonstrate adverse biological responses to e-cigarette aerosols, the translation of these findings into long-term clinical outcomes remains an area of ongoing investigation. Several blackouts have recently occurred in Europe and elsewhere. Blackouts are mostly the consequence of a series of events rather than a single event. Their intensity and frequency could be related to the stronger penetration of renewables into electric power systems. Although many different renewable power units may be installed, they all have some basic properties: their power is not consistent, and power inverters are used to connect renewables to electric power systems. Photovoltaic systems are the most typical representative of this large group of power sources. These devices have become more sophisticated over the past few years, allowing for the precise control of large photovoltaic fields. In this situation, all power converters act as one. This means that they could be turned on and off during short intervals. Furthermore, their power factor could be independently adjusted. These functions are desirable for small systems; however, their implications for stability at a larger scale are usually not considered. In this study, the stability issues of a system under the high penetration of renewables and a unique control system are investigated. The most prominent case of this influence is a high-impact rare (HR) event, also known as a “black swan”, which could cause a massive blackout in an electric power system. Full article

The Turkish economy has been affected by recurring populist cycles and resultant economic crises, which have, in turn, unfavorably influenced the growth performance of the country. Inspired by the Turkish experience, this study attempts to investigate the effects of changes in exchange rate on the growth performance of the Turkish economy by using the production function framework. The data is sourced from the World Development Indicators and Penn World Table. Modern time series techniques are utilized to estimate the production function. Our findings reveal that there is a long-term but unfavorable relationship between changes in the exchange rate and economic growth in Turkey over the 1980–2019 period. Beyond its macroeconomic implications, the findings highlight that persistent exchange rate instability undermines macroeconomic sustainability by distorting the price mechanism, weakening investment incentives, and reducing long-term productive capacity. In this context, exchange rate stability emerges as a critical prerequisite for achieving sustainable economic growth in emerging economies such as Turkey. Full article

Hyperlipidemia (HLP) is a metabolic dysfunction marked by dysregulated lipid metabolism, which jeopardizes cardiovascular health. The function of autophagy modulated by the AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK)/mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) pathway in HLP pathogenesis has not been fully elucidated. Thus, this study centered on the impacts of different feeding durations on HLP models. ICR mice were given a high-fat diet (HFD) to induce the model, with durations set at 3, 6, 9, 12, and 15 weeks. Body weight, liver and adipose organ indices, serum and hepatic lipid levels, and pathological changes (assessed by Oil Red O and HE staining) were measured. Related pathway markers were detected via immunofluorescence, quantitative real-time PCR (qPCR), and Western blotting. At week 9, the relative protein expression ratios of P-AMPK/AMPK, P-mTOR/mTOR, and P-ULK1/ULK1 were markedly reduced, while the expression levels of LC3Ⅱ/LC3Ⅰ and P62 proteins were notably elevated, exhibiting transient dysregulation characteristics and suggesting a potential optimal modeling time point. It clarifies the temporal pattern, core molecular mechanism, and critical turning point of abdominal adipose metabolic disorder induced by a high-fat diet (HFD) in ICR mice. This study offers a credible basis for the optimal duration of HLP modeling and in vivo animal experimental design. Full article

Beykoz Leather and Shoe Factory is an important industrial heritage site in Istanbul because of its cultural, social, historical, and symbolic value. Reusing it as a filming location has created a long-running controversy about its suitability. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to evaluate the compatibility of adaptive reuse of this industrial heritage site in the context of assigning an alternative use compared to its original function. This paper originally proposed a three-charter rubric system, which uses the three international heritage frameworks, turned into rubrics, to gauge how appropriately (or not) the transformation of this site is handled. The process identified a critical juncture and two phases of progressive transformation. The first stage of adaptive reuse limited the site primarily to filmmaking, successfully preventing abandonment through minimal intervention but offering restricted public access. After 2020, a second stage expanded public accessibility and introduced new functions, creating a more vibrant cultural and creative hub besides demonstrating a more effective adaptive reuse approach. The findings of this study suggest that reuse is an appropriate option for extending the lifespan of abandoned buildings. However, it should be highlighted that physical maintenance simply prevents demolition, whereas offering engaging activities promotes the vitality and longevity of the structures. In a complex industrial heritage site, quasi-public use is a short-term strategy. However, proposing public uses and activities helps prolong the life and vitality of industrial heritage sites that may no longer be used for production purposes. It has been revealed that a holistic strategy for reuse should involve the incorporation of various stakeholders in the process, while considering the sociocultural history and needs of the community, ultimately resulting in a positive impact on the vitality of this important industrial heritage site. The study concludes that the rubric-based application of the three heritage charters—the Burra Charter (BC), the Dublin Principles (DP), and the Nizhny Tagil Charter (NT)—provides an effective framework for assessing the appropriateness of new uses. This approach reveals the impacts of adaptive reuse by rating individual buildings according to their degree of compliance with heritage principles, thereby demonstrating how reuse decisions influence the long-term lifespan of industrial buildings on the site as well as their effects on community engagement. Mounting volumes of fruit processing by-products pose an environmental challenge, yet these wastes harbor rich polyphenol reservoirs locked within plant cell walls. Fermentation has emerged as a green biotransformation strategy to unlock these bound antioxidants without the need for chemical solvents, converting waste streams into value-added nutraceutical ingredients. This review summarizes recent advances in fermenting fruit by-products to boost their total polyphenol content (TPC) and antioxidant capacity, illustrating fermentation’s role in both functional enhancement and sustainable waste valorization. Across diverse fruit substrates, microbial fermentation consistently increases TPC and enhances antioxidant activity, demonstrating significant functional enrichment. More importantly, unlike conventional solvent extraction, fermentation-driven valorization reduces chemical waste and allows full incorporation of the biomass into edible products, including bakery products, beverages, and fermented dairy alternatives. This sustainable approach aligns with circular economy principles by turning food waste into functional ingredients, effectively bridging nutritional enhancement with environmental responsibility. Overall, the findings highlight fermentation as an innovative pathway for waste upcycling in the food system, opening new avenues for antioxidant-rich, zero-waste products and their integration into sustainable food ingredient development, while also indicating that the main barrier to industrial translation lies not in functional efficacy but in process compatibility, reproducibility, and scalability under realistic food processing conditions. The rule of law, a foundational value of the European Union as enshrined in Article 2 of the Treaty on European Union, faces challenges in implementation due to historical and political factors that have evolved over the past decade, particularly within Member States in the administrative domain. While institutional backsliding in countries like Hungary and Poland has drawn significant political attention, less emphasis has been placed on the role of public administrations in upholding or undermining the rule of law on a day-to-day basis. This paper argues that the sustainability of the rule of law in the EU requires more than legal compliance mechanisms. These alone do not address the underlying administrative and cultural factors necessary for effective implementation. Instead, it requires closer attention to how rule-of-law principles are embedded in the everyday functioning of public administrations. This argument is informed by the authors’ systematic examination of recent EU monitoring practices and administrative reform instruments. Adopting a mixed conceptual-empirical methodology, the paper draws on primary data from EU Rule of Law Reports (2020–2024), the EU Justice Scoreboard, the Recovery and Resilience Facility (RRF), and the Technical Support Instrument (TSI), complemented by relevant OECD/SIGMA indicators. Several structural obstacles emerge from the analysis. These include symbolic compliance, whereby organisations adopt formal structures without corresponding behavioural change; weak institutional leadership that fails to drive reform momentum; and the absence of integrated performance metrics, which hampers meaningful accountability. Fragmented ownership of reform agendas, in turn, breeds inconsistency in implementation. These challenges point to the limitations of a technocratic or legalistic approach to rule-of-law governance. Strategic leadership and organisational flexibility emerge from the evidence as preconditions—not merely facilitators—of genuine internalisation, though the relationship is context-dependent. Digitalisation can reinforce these dynamics, yet its contribution depends on whether it is embedded within broader integrity-oriented reforms. The paper advocates for a shift from externalized compliance mechanisms to a model that emphasizes administrative ownership through specific strategies such as developing integrity-based leadership programs and embedding governance practices that prioritize transparency and accountability. It proposes concrete institutional reforms, including performance-linked conditionalities that tie funding to measurable outcomes, ethical leadership academies to train future leaders, integrity audits to ensure accountability, and administrative benchmarking to set clear standards, as tools to foster autonomous, value-driven public institutions capable of adapting to evolving governance challenges while maintaining core democratic values. The simplest definition of light pollution (LP) is the presence of artificial light at night (ALAN) at inappropriate times, intensity, and inappropriate amounts and colors. All these parameters of anthropogenic light clearly indicate that the presence of ALAN can disrupt the proper functioning of not only humans but all organisms on Earth that have evolved in conditions of alternating day and night, closing within a 24 h day. Cities are the primary source of LP, and the ever-increasing global urbanization makes LP one of the fastest-growing threats to our civilization. It is particularly dangerous because public awareness of its existence is exceptionally weak, as the presence of light is usually perceived as a good thing, generating safety and beauty, and it is difficult for people to understand that excess of light may turn against us. However, LP dysregulates the well-known circadian rhythms of humans and animals and disrupts normal plant physiology. Furthermore, in a light-polluted world, plant–pollinator relationships are also endangered, which can lead to disruptions in food chains. In this review, we will present various aspects of excessive lighting and propose solutions to mitigate the increasing LP, considering the threats it poses to all living organisms. Full article

This essay contends that Jean-Luc Godard’s late digital cinema elaborates a geopolitical aesthetics in which Europe confronts the return of its repressed histories through the very instability of the digital image. While Europe has long functioned in Godard’s work as both theme and epistemic horizon—echoing the Hegelian cartographies—Film Socialisme (2010) and The Image Book (2018) transform this Eurocentrism into a site of crisis. In these films, what Fredric Jameson terms the “political unconscious” (1981) emerges through the spectral return of Palestine and the Arab world, compelling a reckoning with colonial legacies and the limits of representation. The digital turn proves decisive. Godard mobilizes pixelation, saturation, glitch, and decomposed sound to reveal what might be called the technological unconscious of the medium. I develop the concept of “Digital Orientalism” to designate how Orientalist chronotopes persist in the digital age yet are unsettled by Godard’s experimental manipulation of audiovisual fragments. Through close readings of Film Socialisme and The Image Book, which incorporates works by Arab filmmakers including Youssef Chahine, Nacer Khemir, Ossama Mohammed, and Wiam Simav Bedirxan, I show how Godard’s fractured montages produce symptomatic cartographies of the world-system where repression, memory, and accident collide. Drone localization is essential for various purposes such as navigation, autonomous flight, and object tracking. However, this task is challenging when satellite signals are unavailable. This paper addresses database-free vision-only localization of flying drones using optimal window template matching and velocity fusion. Assuming the ground is flat, multiple optimal windows are derived from a piecewise linear segment (regression) model of the image-to-real world conversion function. The optimal window is used as a fixed region template to estimate the instantaneous velocity of the drone. The multiple velocities obtained from multiple optimal windows are integrated by a hybrid fusion rule: a weighted average for lateral (sideways) velocities, and a winner-take-all decision for longitudinal velocities. In the experiments, a drone performed a total of six medium-range (800 m to 2 km round trip) and high-speed (up to 14 m/s) maneuvering flights in rural and urban areas. The flight maneuvers include forward-backward, zigzags, and banked turns. Performance was evaluated by root mean squared error (RMSE) and drift error of the GNSS-derived ground-truth trajectories and rigid-body rotated vision-only trajectories. Four fusion rules (simple average, weighted average, winner-take-all, hybrid fusion) were evaluated, and the hybrid fusion rule performed the best. The proposed video stream-based method has been shown to achieve flight errors ranging from a few meters to tens of meters, which corresponds to a few percent of the flight length. Full article

This paper examines Wittgenstein’s shifting engagement with religion, from the early emphasis on the limits of the world in the Tractatus to the later attention to the ordinary and to the ways religious expressions inhabit forms of life. An analysis of later Wittgenstein shows that the religious functions within ordinary language-games, in which expressions tied to religion have established places and contexts of use. These uses, in turn, are intelligible against the background of many kinds of talk and observation that are not ordinarily characterized as religious. At the same time, Wittgenstein is concerned with the way in which words can be intensified through personal use, acquiring an inflection that responds to individual experience and is exposed to the possibility of acknowledgment or failure. What emerges is a way of inhabiting language in which the religious is understood as a renewal of one’s gaze upon the everyday. This is the region in which philosophy and religion meet in Wittgenstein: the work of finding again the words that speak for us, allowing them to regain their depth and to return us, moment by moment, to ordinary life. Oxidative stress and sarcopenia are increasingly perceived as interdependent processes that significantly affect the course of cardiovascular diseases. Excessive production of reactive oxygen species leads to muscle cell damage, mitochondrial disorders, and chronic inflammation, which promote progressive loss of muscle mass and function. Methods: The aim of the study was to analyze the mechanisms linking oxidative stress and sarcopenia in the course of cardiovascular diseases. Our scoping review initially identified 854 articles, of which 3 were ultimately included in the review (after removing duplicates (n = 118), 736 articles remained; after re-screening the articles according to the inclusion and exclusion criteria (n = 302), 434 articles remained; 196 publications lacked full text and were excluded, leaving 238 articles). Results: An examination of the available literature indicates a potential association between increased oxidative stress and the possible development of sarcopenia in individuals with cardiovascular diseases. The studies identified in this review suggest that elevated levels of reactive oxygen species, together with reduced antioxidant capacity, may contribute to muscle fiber damage, mitochondrial disturbances, and the activation of chronic inflammatory processes, which could in turn be involved in the accelerated decline of muscle mass and strength. Conclusions: These results confirm that oxidative stress is a key pathophysiological element linking both disease entities and may be an important target of therapeutic interventions. Full article

For a long time, glycolysis and mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation were opposed to each other. Glycolysis works when there is a lack of oxygen; the mitochondria supply ATP in an oxygen environment. In recent decades, it has been discovered that glycolysis in vivo always works and the final product is lactate. Lactate can accumulate and is the transport form for pyruvate. In this review, we look at how obligate lactate formation during glycolysis affects the tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle and mitochondrial respiration. We conclude that fatty acid β-oxidation is a prerequisite for obligate lactate formation during glycolysis, which in turn promotes and enhances the anaplerotic functions of the TCA cycle. In this way, a supply of two types of substrates for mitochondria is formed: fatty acids as the basic energy substrates, and lactate as an emergency substrate for the heart, skeletal muscles, and brain. High steady-state levels of lactate and ATP, supported by β-oxidation, stimulate gluconeogenesis and thus support the lactate cycle. It is concluded that mitochondrial fatty acids β-oxidation and glycolysis constitute a single interdependent system of energy metabolism of the human body. Full article
