This study discusses subjective aspects of the commodification of healthcare from an ethno-class perspective using narrative analysis of patient stories. We hypothesize that the objective social hierarchy of resources, together with a certain degree of individual agency, structure the patients’ strategies of coping with the public–private “maze” of the healthcare system. The findings show different coping strategies indicating three different ethno-class ‘patient-selves’: The dominant ‘Neo-Liberal Self’, prevalent among the upper middle-class (mostly Ashkenazi Jews) that expresses contempt of the public system, and an individual hero-quest story maneuvering between the private and the public. The ‘troubled’ patient-self of the low-middle and working classes (mainly Mizrahi Jews and Arabs) also expresses negative impressions of the public system, but it is drawn to sadness, fear of being lost, and a longing for a lost ‘logic of care’. Finally, a ‘communal alternative self’ among the Arab lower classes seeks personal solutions through social networks that include local health providers while crossing barriers between private and public sectors. All selves show some degree of neoliberal values, but the first ‘patient-self’ implies a sense of social mastery while the other two attest to the agency and even resistance of patients facing structural barriers and scarce resources. Buber’s analysis of Job, offering four responses to the theodical questions that innocent suffering raises, has been highly influential since its publication in 1942, as has been Steven Kepnes’s more recent application of Buber’s analysis to the Nazi Holocaust. Each of Buber’s specific responses has been, at various points in history and today, taken up by sufferers and by those pondering suffering’s theodical implications. Yet each response retains troubling features. This article, building on Buber and Kepnes, offers an alternate reading of the Book of Job, centering on two points: (i) a possible covenantal, rather than retributive, nature of the God-Job relationship and (ii) an understanding of God’s response to Job as covenantal. This is not to suggest that such a response “solves” suffering, but it is comprehensible to Job from his own knowledge and experience of the world—an important aspect of the covenantal relationship—and is in some measure helpful. The article first reviews Kepnes’s reading of Buber, discusses four aspects of it that remain theodically troubling, and then sketches a covenantal reading of Job, drawing on the work of Edward Greenstein, Moshe Greenberg, David Burrell, Bill McKibben, Susannah Ticciati, and other more recent Jobian scholars. This discussion explores the following: (i) covenant in the Wisdom literature, (ii) a universalist reading of covenant entailing human integrity, reasoned dialogue, and the validity of human knowledge within natural, human capacity, (iii) why Job’s request to God is covenantal, and (iv) why God’s response is as well. Major depressive disorder is a mental health condition characterized by ongoing feelings of sadness, trouble focusing or making decisions, and a frequent sense of fatigue or hopelessness that lasts for a prolonged period. If left undiagnosed, it can have serious consequences, including suicide. This study proposes a 3D convolutional neural network model to detect major depressive disorder using 3D grey matter images from magnetic resonance imaging. The proposed 3D convolutional architecture comprises multiple hierarchical convolutional and pooling layers, designed to automatically learn spatial patterns from magnetic resonance imaging data. The model was optimized via Bayesian hyperparameter tuning, achieving an accuracy of 72.26%, an area under the receiver operating characteristic curve of 0.80, and an area under the precision–recall curve of 0.81 on a large multisite dataset comprising 1276 patients and 1104 healthy controls. Gradient-weighted class activation mapping is utilized to find brain regions associated with major depressive disorder. From this study, six regions were identified, namely, the frontal lobe, parietal lobe, temporal lobe, thalamus, insular cortex and corpus callosum which may be affected by major depressive disorder. Detergent solubilisation remains the most commonly used but potentially problematic method to extract membrane proteins from lipid bilayers for Cryo-EM studies. Although recent advances have introduced excellent alternatives—such as amphipols, nanodiscs and SMALPs—the use of detergents is often necessary for intermediate steps. In this paper, we share our experiences working with detergent-solubilised samples within the modern Cryo-EM structural pipeline from the perspective of an EM specialist. Our aim is to inform novice users about potential challenges they may encounter. Drawing on specific examples from a variety of biological membrane systems, including Magnesium channels, lipopolysaccharide biosynthesis, and the human major facilitator superfamily transporters, we describe how the intrinsic properties of detergent-extracted samples can affect protein purification, Cryo-EM grid preparation (including the formation of vitreous ice) and the reconstitution of proteins into micelles. We also discuss how these unique characteristics can impact different stages of structural analysis and lead to complications in single-particle averaging software analysis. For each case, we present our insights into the underlying causes and suggest possible mitigations or alternative approaches. Full article

Smoking tobacco is a prominent activity in Cameroon, with each region holding different views on the devices used for smoking. In Bamum, these vessels are called kiis. Many of these pipes, or kiis, have been removed from the kingdom and displayed without proper contextual information in Western institutions since the 1920s. This paper highlights discrepancies in academic pursuits regarding the kii and their decontextualized displays, while also providing ethical guidelines for their future displays. Understanding the intended purpose and cultural significance of a kii allows for the process of restitution in the form of ethical display to take place. Using the Heritage Context Retrieval Analysis (HeCRA) method, the research aim to explore the cultural origins of the kii in the GWU collection, retrieve its cultural context, critique the prevalent cabinet of curiosities display format used in displaying them in museums, and propose ethical frameworks for handling such devices, which are both utilitarian and culturally charged in 21st-century museums. This paper uncovers the true identity of a brass kii and dismantles the cabinet of curiosities and the alignment of African tangible heritage to oddities. The goal is to instigate a new approach to approaching such cultural objects by invoking their original spiritual and cultural symbolism in exhibitions outside of Bamum. Full article

This essay proposes operative creativity as a conceptual and artistic response to the shifting roles of images in the age of algorithmic perception. Departing from Harun Farocki’s seminal artwork Eye/Machine, which first introduced the operative image as functioning not to represent but to activate within machinic processes, it traces the transformation of images from representational devices to machinic agents embedded in systems of simulation and realization. Although operative images were initially engineered for strictly technological functions, they have, from their inception, been subject to repurposing for human perception and interpretation. Drawing on literature theorizing the redirection of operative images within military, computational, and epistemic domains, the essay does not attempt a comprehensive survey. Instead, it opens a conceptual aperture within the framework, expanding it to illuminate the secondary redeployment of operative images in contemporary visual culture. Concluding with the artwork Terms and Conditions, co-created by Ruti Sela and the author, it examines how artistic gestures might neutralize the weaponized gaze, offering a mode of operative creativity that troubles machinic vision and reclaims a space for human opacity. This narrative review examines the complex relationship between sleep changes during the menopausal transition and cardiometabolic risks. The most common complaint about sleep is increased awakenings during sleep. Other complaints include having trouble falling asleep, waking up too early, insufficient and non-restorative sleep, and overall poor quality. Sleep determined using objective methods also indicates that greater awakenings after sleep onset are associated with the period of menopausal transition. Polysomnography recordings suggest physiological hyperarousal during sleep. Changes in other sleep metrics, such as sleep latency and sleep duration, are less consistent, and some studies suggest they may not worsen during the menopausal transition. These sleep issues are influenced by multiple factors, such as hormonal fluctuations, vasomotor symptoms, and psychosocial factors, and evidence suggests that hypothalamic kisspeptin/neurokinin B/dynorphin (KNDy) neurons are key underlying mechanisms for these associations. The menopausal transition is also associated with increases in cardiometabolic risk factors, such as body fat, altered lipid profiles, blood pressure, and vascular health. Emerging evidence suggests that poor sleep health during this period is associated with increased cardiometabolic risks and adverse cardiovascular outcomes. Thus, addressing sleep disturbances is crucial for comprehensive healthcare during the menopausal transition to safeguard long-term cardiometabolic health. Future research is needed to investigate interventions that can improve sleep and their impact on cardiometabolic health in this population experiencing increases in cardiometabolic risk. Guide dogs are primarily seen as mobility aids for people with visual impairments, but they may also influence users’ psychological well-being and social lives. Benefits of being partnered with a guide dog have been found in several countries but Scandinavian studies are sparse. This qualitative study explores the lived experiences of six Danish guide dog partners through semi-structured interviews. A reflexive thematic analysis found six primary benefits: improved mobility, increased physical activity, enhanced freedom and independence, new social interactions, a strong emotional bond with the dog, and better mental well-being. Users also reported challenges, including frequent distractions caused by the public interacting with the dog, difficulties during the initial adjustment period, increased cleaning, and occasional trouble finding care for the dog. Participants unanimously emphasized the irreplaceable value of their guide dogs and positive socioemotional dimensions of guide dog partnerships. The findings add Scandinavian voices that support existing international research and note three areas of potential improvement: better public education about guide dog etiquette, enhanced support during the adjustment period, and improved care-sharing arrangements. The study underscores the importance of considering guide dogs as both functional aids and sources of emotional and social support. Full article

Basic and applied research reveals the importance of sea slugs as a source of new bioactive molecules or of still little-known intra/intercellular processes, mainly linked to the highly specialised defensive strategies typical of this group of shell-less molluscs. In this context, the nudibranch Doris verrucosa (Gastropoda, Mollusca), commonly known as ‘warty dorid’, is particularly interesting due to its ability to produce de novo biochemical compounds with pharmacological properties and being the type species of the genus Doris, one of the oldest and richest in species, currently characterised by a troubled systematics. Despite its wide distribution across the Eastern Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea, this species has not yet been characterised from a genetic point of view. Considering the importance of assessing species identity to correctly investigate the systematics and to properly unravel potentially useful applications, results from a molecular assessment of such interesting species are provided. Genetic analysis involved species delimitation, phylogeny and haplotype network methods carried out on specimens of D. verrucosa collected from highly anthropised areas of Southern Italy (central Mediterranean Sea). Furthermore, in situ observations allowed us to fill some gaps in knowledge on the ecology and the morphological variability of this species that could be useful for future comparisons. Full article

Linn Tonstad’s paper, ‘(Un)wise Theologians’, identifies a theological approach that puts pressure on its ability to handle its materiality sufficiently in a number of ways. However, following the trajectory of Tonstad’s discovery of “the deformations to which theology is susceptible in the university” and elsewhere, a supplementation is required to specify where its thesis needs more rigorous development. Firstly, the paper’s argument locates what Tonstad describes as “self-securitization and self-assertion” in a form of a subjectivity characterisable as a docility making possessive form of divine givenness, and it draws the papal encyclical Fides et Ratio into Tonstad’s critique of the theology of John Webster to make this case. Secondly, Tonstad’s appeal to the reparative mode of contextualisation necessitates a differentiation to be made between modes of what is commonly called ‘contextual theology’ since there are forms that shelter under this umbrella term that echo the subjectivity of that which Tonstad uncompromisingly critiques. Thirdly, while ‘(Un)wise Theologians’ only lightly indexes a reparative direction properly “chastened” theology, a kenotically interrogative sensibility may prove to be sufficiently capacious for the critical conduct of “theological therapy”. If so, then it can function to constantly trouble the theological in an appropriate manner without flight into a premature dematerialised fixation point. Full article

The construction industry has been troubled by a shortage of skilled labor and safety accidents in recent years. Therefore, more and more robots are introduced to undertake dangerous and repetitive jobs, so that human workers can concentrate on higher-value and creative problem-solving tasks. Nevertheless, although human–robot collaboration (HRC) shows great potential, most existing evaluation methods still focus on the single performance of either the human or robot, and systematic indicators for a whole HRC team remain insufficient. To fill this research gap, the present study constructs a comprehensive evaluation framework for HRC team performance in construction projects. Firstly, a detailed literature review is carried out, and three theories are integrated to build 33 indicators preliminarily. Afterwards, an expert questionnaire survey (N = 15) is adopted to revise and verify the model empirically. The survey yielded a Cronbach’s alpha of 0.916, indicating excellent internal consistency. The indicators rated highest in importance were task completion time (µ = 4.53) and dynamic separation distance (µ = 4.47) on a 5-point scale. Eight indicators were excluded due to mean importance ratings falling below the 3.0 threshold. The framework is formed with five main dimensions and 25 concrete indicators. Finally, an AHP-TOPSIS method is used to evaluate the HRC team performance. The AHP analysis reveals that Safety (weight = 0.2708) is prioritized over Productivity (weight = 0.2327) by experts, establishing a safety-first principle for successful HRC deployment. The framework is demonstrated through a case study of a human–robot plastering team, whose team performance scored as fair. This shows that the framework can help practitioners find out the advantages and disadvantages of HRC team performance and provide targeted improvement strategies. Furthermore, the framework offers construction managers a scientific basis for deciding robot deployment and team assignment, thus promoting safer, more efficient, and more creative HRC in construction projects. Platinum has emerged as an optimal catalyst for the selective hydrogenation of nitroarenes owing to its high hydrogenation activity, selectivity, and stability. In this study, we report the fabrication of platinum nanoparticles stabilized on a composite support consisting of gum acacia polymer (GAP) and TiO2. It was engineered for the targeted reduction of nitroarenes to arylamines via selective hydrogenation in methanol at ambient temperature. The non-toxic and biocompatible properties of GAP enable it to act as a reducing and stabilizing agent during synthesis. The synthesized nanocatalyst was characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Morphological and structural analyses revealed that the fabricated catalyst consisted of minuscule Pt nanoparticles integrated within the GAP framework, accompanied by the corresponding TiO2 nanoparticles. Inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES) was employed to ascertain the Pt content. The mild reaction conditions, decent yields, trouble-free workup, and facile separation of the catalyst make this method a clean and practical alternative to nitroreduction. Selective hydrogenation yielded an average arylamine production of 97.6% over five consecutive cycles, demonstrating the stability of the nanocatalyst without detectable leaching. Full article

This paper proposes an energy-efficient current control strategy for drive modules of permanent magnetic actuators (PMAs) to reduce the cost and volume of DC-link capacitors. The drive module of the PMA does not receive the input power from an external power source during operation. Instead, the externally charged DC-link capacitors are used as internal backup power sources to guarantee the reliable operation even in the case of an emergency. Therefore, it is important to use the charged energy efficiently within the limited DC-link capacitors. However, conventional control strategies using a voltage open loop have trouble reducing the energy waste. This is because the drive module with the voltage open loop uses unnecessary energy even after the PMA mover has finished its movement. To figure it out, the proposed control strategy adopts a current control loop to save energy even if the displacement of the PMA mover is unknown. In addition, the proposed strategy can ensure the successful operation of the PMA by using the driving force analysis. The efficacy of the proposed strategy is verified through the experimental test. It would be expected that the proposed strategy can reduce the cost and volume of the PMA drive system. Full article

Background: More than three years have elapsed since the onset of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine by the Russian Federation, displacing millions of Ukrainians. While preserving cultural identity in the host country is important for gaining resilience among refugees, we found no studies about how cultural identity influences health care experiences during resettlement. Objective: This study explores how cultural identity shapes health care experiences among Ukrainian refugees during resettlement in the United States. Methods: We conducted an interpretive description study using focus groups to elicit the perspectives of Ukrainian refugees who resettled in North Carolina after 24 February 2022. Twelve Ukrainian women participated in one of four focus groups. Thematic content analysis was employed for case comparison, and themes were inductively derived. Results: Two themes were identified: troubled health care partnerships and imprecise notions of preventive practices. Troubled partnerships represented a lack of trust between refugees and U.S. clinicians and the health care system. Imprecise notions of preventive practices represented mistaken beliefs about prevention. Conclusions: This study adds to the science on refugee health in two ways. First, newly arrived refugees often maintain strong ties to their homeland, which shapes their health care decisions and reinforces their cultural identity. Second, despite being well educated, some refugees held misconceptions about preventive health care, highlighting the need for clinicians to provide clear guidance on primary and secondary prevention practices. Findings may help guide clinicians in delivering culturally sensitive care to refugee populations. Full article

The Effects of Interventions Using Support Tools to Reduce Household Food Waste: A Study Using a Cloud-Based Automatic Weighing System

Food waste is a global sustainability issue, and in Japan, approximately half of all food waste is generated in households. This study focused on refrigerator management behaviors aimed at using up the food inventory in the home. An intervention study involving 119 households with two or more members across Japan, with a two-week baseline period and a two-week intervention, was conducted. Target behaviors were set as “search food that should be eaten quickly,” “move it to a visible place,” and “use the foods that should be eaten quickly,” and tools to support these behaviors were selected, including an organizer for the refrigerator, photos, and food management apps. Each tool was assigned to approximately 30 households, and a control group was established. Food waste was measured using a cloud-based automatic weighing system, and all participants were asked to separate avoidable food waste at home and dispose of it in the designated waste bin. During the intervention period, the average weekly food waste per household decreased by 29% to 51% in the intervention group, while there was little change in the control group. An analysis using a two-way mixed ANOVA revealed a marginally significant interaction (p < 0.10), indicating moderate effectiveness. Among the behaviors contributing to reduced food waste, three actions—“having trouble not being able to recall food inventory at home during shopping,” “moving foods that should be used sooner,” and “organizing refrigerator”—showed significant interaction effects (p < 0.05) in a two-way mixed ANOVA, indicating the effectiveness of the intervention.
