Channels with three standard symmetrical sections and one asymmetric section are mounted as cantilever beams with the web oriented vertically. A classical solution to the analysis of stress in each thin-walled cantilever channel is provided using the principle of wall shear flow superposition. The latter is coupled with a further superposition between axial stress arising from bending and from the constraint placed on free warping imposed at the fixed end. Closed solutions for design are tabulated for the net shear stress and the net axial stress at points around any section within the length. Stress distributions thus derived serve as a benchmark structure for alternative numerical solutions and for experimental investigations. The conversion of the transverse free end-loading applied to a thin-walled cantilever channel into the shear and axial stress that it must bear is outlined. It is shown that the point at which this loading is applied within the cross-section is crucial to this stress conversion. When a single force is applied to an arbitrary point at the free-end section, three loading effects arise generally: bending, flexural shear and torsion. The analysis of each effect requires that this force’s components are resolved to align with the section’s principal axes. These forces are then considered in reference to its centroid and to its shear centre. This shows that axial stress arises directly from bending and from the constraint imposed on free warping at the fixed end. Shear stress arises from flexural shear and also from torsion with a load offset from the shear centre. When the three actions are combined, the net stresses of each action are considered within the ability of the structure to resist collapse from plasticity and buckling. The novelty herein refers to the presentation of the shear flow calculations within a thin wall as they arise from an end load offset from the shear centre. It is shown how the principle of superposition can be applied to individual shear flow and axial stress distributions arising from flexural bending, shear and torsion. Therein, the new concept of a ‘trans-moment’ appears from the transfer in moments from their axes through centroid G to parallel axes through shear centre E. The trans-moment complements the static equilibrium condition, in which a shift in transverse force components from G to E is accompanied by torsion and bending about the flexural axis through E. This study develops a novel transverse steel damper (TSD) to enhance the seismic performance of tall-pier girder bridges, featuring superior lateral strength and energy dissipation capacity. The TSD’s design and arrangement are presented, with its hysteretic behavior simulated in ABAQUS. Key parameters (yield strength: 3000 kN; initial gap: 100 mm; post-yield stiffness ratio: 15%) are optimized through seismic analysis under near-fault ground motions, incorporating pulse characteristic investigations. The optimized TSD effectively reduces bearing displacements and results in smaller pier top displacements and internal forces compared to the bridge with fixed bearings. Due to the higher-order mode effects, there is no direct correlation between top displacements and bottom internal forces. As pier height decreases, the S-shaped shear force and bending moment envelopes gradually become linear, reflecting the reduced influence of these modes. Medium- to long-period pulse-like motions amplify seismic responses due to resonance (pulse period ≈ fundamental period) or susceptibility to large low-frequency spectral values. Higher-order mode effects on bending moments and shear forces intensify under prominent high-frequency components. However, the main velocity pulse typically masks the influence of high-order modes by the overwhelming seismic responses due to large spectral values at medium to long periods. Full article

This study investigates the hydrodynamic performance of ships entering a ship lift compartment that is under the influence of upstream channel geometry and proposes a mechanical traction scheme to enhance operational safety and efficiency. Utilizing a Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes (RANS)-based computational fluid dynamics (CFD) approach with overlapping grid technology, numerical simulations were conducted for both single and grouped ships navigating through varying water depths, speeds, and shore distances. The results revealed significant transverse force oscillations near the floating navigation wall due to unilateral shore effects, posing risks of deviation. The cargo ship experienced drastic resistance fluctuations in shallow-to-very-shallow-water transitions, while tugboats were notably affected by hydrodynamic interactions during group entry. A mechanical traction system with a four-link robotic arm was designed and analyzed kinematically and statically, demonstrating structural feasibility under converted real-ship traction forces (55.1 kN). The key findings emphasize the need for collision avoidance measures in wall sections and validate the proposed traction scheme for safe and efficient ship entry/exit. This research provides critical insights for optimizing ship lift operations in restricted waters. Full article

The commercialization of selective broccoli harvesters, a critical response to agricultural labor shortages, is hampered by end effectors with large operational envelopes and poor adaptability to complex field conditions. To address these limitations, this study developed and evaluated a novel end-effector with an integrated transverse cutting mechanism and a foldable grasping cavity. Unlike conventional fixed cylindrical cavities, our design utilizes actuated grasping arms and a mechanical linkage system to significantly reduce the operational footprint and enhance maneuverability. Key design parameters were optimized based on broccoli morphological data and experimental measurements of the maximum stem cutting force. Furthermore, dynamic simulations were employed to validate the operational trajectory and ensure interference-free motion. Field tests demonstrated an operational success rate of 93.33% and a cutting success rate of 92.86%. The end effector successfully operated in dense planting environments, effectively avoiding interference with adjacent broccoli heads. This research provides a robust and promising solution that advances the automation of broccoli harvesting, paving the way for the commercial adoption of robotic harvesting technologies. Full article

In this paper, a new mechanical vibration technology applied to continuous casting production is studied, which is used to break the dendrite at the solidification front, expand the equiaxed dendrite zone, and improve the center quality of the billet. The exciting force of this vibration technology is provided by a new type of vibration equipment (Vibration roll) independently developed and designed. Firstly, an investigation is conducted into the impacts of vibration acceleration, vibration frequency, and the contact area between the Vibration roll (VR) and the billet surface on the internal stress distribution within the billet shell, respectively. Secondly, the billet with and without vibration treatment was sampled and analyzed through industrial tests. The results show that the area ratio of equiaxed dendrites in transverse specimens treated with vibration technology was 11.96%, compared to 6.55% in untreated specimens. Similarly, for longitudinal samples, the linear ratio of equiaxed dendrites was observed to be 34.56% in treated samples and 22.95% in untreated samples. Compared to the specimens without mechanical vibration, the billet treated with mechanical vibration exhibits an increase in the area ratio and linear ratio of equiaxed dendrite ratio by 5.41% and 11.61%, respectively. Moreover, the probability of bridging at the end of solidification of the billet treated by vibration technology was significantly reduced, and the central porosity and shrinkage cavities of the billet were significantly improved. This study provides the first definitive evidence that the novel mechanical vibration technology can enhance the quality of the billet during the continuous casting process. Full article

Background/Objectives: Deceleration can cause liver ruptures via ligament traction, with a specific, little-known transverse rupture in segment II of the left lobe being a concern. This study aimed to provide a detailed morphological characterization of these segment II ruptures, analyse their formation mechanisms using autopsy material, and propose a systematic intraoperative assessment method to improve their detection. Methods: This study analysed the autopsy cases of 132 victims of sudden, violent deceleration (falls from height, traffic accidents) performed between 2011 and 2014. Liver injuries were meticulously described, focusing on the morphological characteristics of ruptures (course, shape, depth) and their location relative to hepatic ligaments. Cases with prior liver resection due to injuries were excluded. Results: Liver ruptures were found in 61 of the 132 analysed cases (46.2%). A “new location” for ruptures was identified on the diaphragmatic surface of the left lobe’s segment II, near and along the left coronary and triangular ligaments. This specific type of rupture was found in 14 cases. Overall, 40 cadavers had liver ruptures near ligaments, totalling 55 such distinct ruptures, indicating that some had multiple ligament-associated tears. The incidence of liver rupture at this newly described site was statistically significant. Conclusions: Transverse rupture of the left hepatic lobe’s segment II, in its subdiaphragmatic area, results from ligament “pulling” forces during deceleration and is a characteristic injury. Its presence should be considered following blunt abdominal trauma involving deceleration, and the subdiaphragmatic area of the left lateral lobe requires intraoperative inspection, especially if other ligament-associated liver ruptures are found. Core stability is fundamental to posture, balance, and force transmission throughout the kinetic chain. Although traditionally associated with athletic performance, emerging research highlights its broader applicability to recreational fitness. This study investigates the effects of an eight-week core training program on muscle hypertrophy, static balance, and neuromuscular control in recreationally active, non-athletic adults. Participants will undertake a structured intervention comprising progressive triads targeting core stability, strength, and power. Assessment methods include surface electromyography (EMG), ultrasound imaging, three-dimensional force plates, Kinovea motion analysis, and the Satisfaction With Life Scale (SWLS) questionnaire. Expected outcomes include enhanced core muscle activation, improved static balance, and increased core-generated force during overhead medicine ball slam trials. Additionally, the intervention aims to facilitate hypertrophy of the transverse abdominis, internal oblique, and lumbar multifidus muscles, contributing to spinal resilience and motor control. This protocol bridges gaps in core training methodologies and advances their scalability for recreational populations. The proposed model offers a structured, evidence-informed framework for improving core activation, postural stability, muscle adaptation, movement efficiency, and perceived quality of life in recreationally active individuals. We investigate a two-dimensional system of active Brownian dumbbells using molecular dynamics simulations. In this model, each dumbbell is driven by an active force oriented perpendicular to the axis connecting its two constituent beads. We characterize the resulting phase behavior and find that, across all values of activity, the system undergoes phase separation between dilute and dense phases. The dense phase exhibits hexatic order, and for large enough activity, we observe a marked increase in local polarization, with dumbbells predominantly oriented towards the interior of the clusters. Compared to the case of axially self-propelled dumbbells, we find that the binodal region is enlarged towards lower densities at all activities. This shift arises because dumbbells with transverse propulsion can more easily form stable cluster cores, serving as nucleation seeds, and show a highly suppressed escaping rate from the cluster boundary. Finally, we observe that clusters exhibit spontaneous rotation, with the modulus of the angular velocity scaling as ωrg2, where rg is the cluster’s radius of gyration. This contrasts with axially propelled dumbbells, where the scaling follows ωrg1. We develop a simplified analytical model to rationalize this scaling behavior. Full article

The beam–column connection is an important element in frame construction. Despite numerous studies, there is still no uniform procedure for shear force design across countries. We continue to witness serious problems and even collapse of buildings under seismic activity caused by failures in the beam–column connection of the frame. During the last 60 decades, a large number of experimental studies have been carried out on frame assemblies, where various parameters and their compatibility under cyclic activities have been investigated. What remains misunderstood is the magnitude and distribution of the forces passing through the joint and their involvement in the magnitude of the shear force. Here, the creation of a new mathematical model for the beam and column contributes significantly to our understanding of the flow of forces in the frame connection. For this purpose, the full dimensions of the beam and its material properties are taken into account. All investigations were carried out before crack initiation and after crack propagation along the face of the column, where it separates from the beam. In the present work, the beam is subjected to two symmetrical, transverse, uniformly distributed loads. Expressions are derived to determine the magnitudes of the support reactions from the beam, as a function of the height of its lateral edge. The load positions corresponding to the extreme values of the support reactions are determined. Numerical results are presented for the effect over the magnitudes of the support reactions from different strengths of concrete and steel on the beam. The results are compared with those given in the Eurocode for shear force calculation. It is found that the shear force determined by the proposed new model exceeds the force calculated by Eurocode by 4–62.5%, depending on the crack development stage and the beam materials. Background: The cargo stowage and securing plan for non-standardized cargo is vital for ensuring safety at sea, as improper placement or inadequate lashing can compromise maritime transport safety. Due to the diverse size and type of cargo, efficient planning is also essential to optimize space utilization and improve the economic performance of general cargo vessels. Methods: This paper presents a novel methodology to identify the optimal cargo securing layout using lashing lines that comply with international standards while minimizing deck space usage. A comparative analysis of two major securing guidelines was conducted to determine the stricter and safer standard. Results: The optimization approach was validated with real-world case studies, revealing the most effective securing configurations. These are defined by the optimal combination of vertical and horizontal lashing angles, which secure cargo in any stowage position by balancing longitudinal and transverse forces while minimizing occupied deck area. Additionally, novel graphs and 3D maps are introduced to illustrate the relationships between key securing parameters. Conclusions: The obtained results and the visual tools enhance understanding and provide practical support for lashing planners, facilitating safer and more efficient cargo securing decisions. Co(II) complexes have shown promising applications as single-molecule magnets (SMMs) in quantum computing and structural biology. Deciphering the Co(II) complexes may facilitate the development of SMM materials. Structural optimizations and calculations of chemical and magnetic properties were performed for Co(II) complexes with a tripodal tetradentate phenolate-amine ligand using MP2/aug-cc-pvdz, MP2/Def2svp, and CASSCF/Def2svp methods. The Second Order Perturbation Theory Analysis of Fock Matrix in NBO Basis unravels that Co(II) ions form unusual coordinate quasi-double bonds with ligand oxygen donor atoms, and the bond strengths range from 142.01 kcal/mol to 167.36 kcal/mol but lack further spectrometric evidence. The average 151.70 kcal/mol of the Co(II-O coordinates quasi-double bonds are formed mainly by two lone pairs of electrons from the ligand phenolate donor oxygen atoms. Dispersion forces contribute 24%, 28%, 27%, and 31% to the Co(II)-ligand interaction. Theoretical results of ZFS D, transversal ZFS E, and g-factor agree well with the experimental values. Magnetic susceptibility parameters calculated based on 5 doublet roots account for 85% of results computed 40 doublet roots are specified. These insights may aid in the rational design of SMM materials and Co(II) porphyrin fullerene conjugate for CO2 electroreduction with superior magnetic properties. Full article

The disc-buckle scaffold system demonstrates significant advantages in prefabricated construction applications, particularly in terms of installation efficiency, load-bearing capacity, and standardization. Guangzhou Construction Group Co., Ltd., a leading enterprise in promoting prefabricated building development in Guangdong Province, China, has collaborated with the Guangdong University of Technology to develop an innovative disc-buckle scaffold system. The main difference between different scaffolds lies in the connection part of the joint. The mechanical behavior of scaffold joint plays a critical role in determining the structural integrity of the entire scaffolding system. So, the novel disc-buckle scaffold proposed in this paper is mainly new in the joint. Finite element simulation based on the test results is employed to study the performance of the novel scaffold joint in this paper. The results show that the newly developed scaffold joint exhibits superior mechanical performance, characterized by a bending stiffness of 34.5 kN·m/rad. The joint demonstrates maximum tensile and compressive bearing capacities of approximately 108 kN and 70 kN in the transverse direction, respectively. Furthermore, the joint’s maximum shear bearing capacity exceeds 180 kN, surpassing the buckling critical force of the vertical steel pipe and satisfying all strength requirements. The scaffold joint exhibits robust hysteresis characteristics, and the wedge-shaped connection mechanism maintains consistent stiffness and load-bearing symmetry under both positive and negative bending moments. The proposed disc-buckle steel scaffold joint features a minimal number of components, achieving an optimal balance between structural performance and economic efficiency. Full article

This study aims to develop and evaluate a cycling-specific marker protocol that minimises the number of markers while accounting for the unique biomechanics of cycling. Although movements in the frontal and transverse planes during cycling are limited, they are clinically relevant due to their association with overuse injuries. Existing gait-based marker protocols often fail to consider cycling-specific factors such as posture, range of motion, marker occlusion, and muscle-induced artifacts. The proposed protocol (PP) uses 15 physical and 8 virtual markers. In the absence of a gold standard for 3D pedalling kinematics, the PP was evaluated by comparing it with established gait analysis protocols. The protocol demonstrated high correlation in gait (CCC > 0.98 for hip and knee in the sagittal plane), low intra-subject variability (CV < 15% for hip, knee, and ankle), and high repeatability. During pedalling, position, velocity, and acceleration were measured in all three spatial directions. Notably, angular velocity and linear acceleration showed significant components outside the sagittal plane, particularly for angular velocity. These findings highlight the importance of considering 3D motion when estimating forces, joint moments, and joint-specific powers in cycling biomechanics. Full article

Pulmonary Function and Nocturnal Hypoxemia Patterns in Patients with Obstructive Sleep Apnea

Background/Objective: Obesity is a documented risk factor for impaired pulmonary function and abnormal oxyhaemoglobin levels during sleep. This functional impairment becomes more significant when there are additional respiratory pathologies, such as obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and/or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Overnight pulse oximetry may offer an effective evaluation of nocturnal oxyhaemoglobin levels/waveform patterns. We evaluated the correlation between obesity, overnight pulse oximetry (parameters, waveform patterns) and pulmonary function in patients diagnosed with moderate–severe OSA and normal oxyhaemoglobin saturation levels during waking hours. We also compared the overnight oxyhaemoglobin saturation levels between patients with OSA alone and those with associated COPD. Methods: This was a retrospective, transversal, non-interventional study on consecutive patients with moderate–severe OSA diagnosed using overnight cardiorespiratory polygraphy over a period of 18 months. After analyzing the study population’s characteristics, the patients were divided into two subgroups: one consisting of patients with OSA alone (Group A), and the second with coexisting OSA and COPD (Group B). Results: Seventy-six patients were included in the study, and 18% were diagnosed with COPD. A higher body mass index (BMI) correlated with a higher number of ≥3% SpO2 drops/h (ODI3) and percentage of time with oxyhaemoglobin saturation < 90% (t90) and a lower average nocturnal oxyhaemoglobin saturation (avgSpO2). ODI3 correlated negatively with avgSpO2 and positively with t90. After eliminating BMI as a confounding factor, lower values of forced expiratory volume in the first second (FEV1) were associated with lower avgSpO2 and higher t90. FEV1 did not corelate with ODI3. After dividing the study population into the two subgroups, patients from Group B had a tendency towards lower average nocturnal SpO2 levels compared to Group A. Conclusions: Different phenotypes/patterns of nocturnal hypoxemia can be identified using quantitative and qualitative analyses of overnight pulse oximetry: repetitive, consecutive obstructive respiratory events with a characteristic intermittent (saw-tooth) hypoxemia pattern and alveolar hypoventilation, resulting in a continuous (plateau) hypoxemia pattern. According to our findings, nocturnal hypoxemia is more important at lower FEV1 values (correlating with lower avgSpO2/higher t90, but not with ODI3). The presence of a continuous hypoxemia pattern in patients with OSA may suggest that pulmonary function tests should be performed in order to differentiate patients with alveolar hypoventilation secondary to obesity (restrictive syndrome) from those with associated COPD (obstructive syndrome). This can have an impact on the management of the case and the therapeutic approach (positive pressure therapy with/without supplemental oxygen). Full article

In Situ Investigation of the Mechanical Property Anisotropy of TC11 Forgings Through Electron Backscatter Diffraction

Electron backscatter diffraction and scanning electron microscopy were performed herein to in situ investigate the influence of texture on the anisotropic deformation mechanism of TC11 forged components. The in situ tensile specimen was cut from the TC11 ring forging, and the tensile force–displacement curve was recorded while the slip lines in the specimen surface detected was traced during the in situ tensile test. The tensile results show that the yield and ultimate tensile strengths decreased in the order of transverse-direction (TD) > rolling-direction (RD) > normal-direction (ND) samples. The anisotropy of the tensile strength was related to the differences in the activated slip systems of the ND, TD, and RD samples. The slip lines results show that in the yielding stage, the ND, TD, and RD samples were dominated by Prismatic <a>, Pyramidal <c + a>, and Pyramidal <a> slips, respectively. In order to further analyze the relationship between the slip system and the yield strength, an anisotropy coefficient was determined to evaluate the differences in resistances for different activated slip systems, providing a good explanation of the variations in the tensile strength anisotropy. The ratios of the critical resolved shear stress (CRSS) of the basal, Prismatic <a>, primary Pyramidal <c + a>, and secondary Pyramidal <c + a> slip systems in the α phase were estimated to be 0.93:1:1.18:1.05 based on the type, number, orientation of slip activations, and Schmid factor. Moreover, the Prismatic <a> slips primarily occurred in the axial and radial (ND and RD) samples with [0001] and [1-21-2] textures, whereas the Pyramidal <c + a> slip system was dominant in the TD samples with [112-2] and [101-2] textures. Overall, this research demonstrates that the activation of the α-phase slip depends on the grain orientation, SF, and the CRSS, promoting strong strength anisotropy. Full article
