With the electrification of generator sets, electric locomotives, new energy vehicles, and other industries, AC motors subject bearings to an electric field environment, leading to galvanic corrosion due to the use of variable frequency power supply drives. The phenomenon of bearing discharge breakdown in subway traction motors is a critical issue in understanding the relationship between shaft current strength and the extent of bearing damage. This paper analyzes the mechanism of impulse discharge that leads to galvanic corrosion damage in bearings at a microscopic level and conducts electric thermal coupling simulations of the traction motor bearing discharge breakdown process. It examines the temperature rise associated with lubricant film discharge breakdown during the dynamic operation of the bearing and investigates how breakdown channel parameters and operational conditions affect the temperature rise in the micro-region of bearing lubrication. Ultimately, the results of the electric thermal coupling simulation are validated through experimental tests. This study revealed that in an electric field environment, the load-bearing area of the outer ring experiences significantly more severe corrosion damage than the inner ring, whereas non-bearing areas remain unaffected by electrolytic corrosion. When the inner ring reaches a speed of 4500_rpm, the maximum widths of electrolytic corrosion pits for the outer and inner rings are measured at 89 um and 51 um, respectively. Additionally, the highest recorded temperatures for the breakdown channels in the outer and inner rings are 932 °C and 802 °C, respectively. Furthermore, as the inner ring speed increases, both the width of the electrolytic corrosion pits and the temperature of the breakdown channels rise. Specifically, at inner ring speeds of 2500_rpm, 3500_rpm, and 4500_rpm, the widths of the electrolytic pits in the outer ring raceway load zone were measured at 34 um, 56 um, and 89 um, respectively. The highest temperatures of the lubrication film breakdown channels were recorded as 612 °C, 788 °C, and 932 °C, respectively. This study provides a theoretical basis and data support for the protective and maintenance practices of traction motor bearings. Full article

This study presents a simulation-based damage modeling and fatigue risk assessment of a reusable ceramic matrix composite thruster designed for short-duration, green bipropellant propulsion systems. The thruster is constructed from a fiber-reinforced ultra-high temperature ceramic matrix composite composed of zirconium diboride, silicon carbide, and carbon fibers. Time-resolved thermal and structural simulations are conducted on a validated thruster geometry to characterize the severity of early-stage thermal shock, stress buildup, and potential degradation pathways. Unlike traditional fatigue studies that rely on empirical fatigue constants or Paris-law-based crack-growth models, this work introduces a simulation-derived stress-margin envelope methodology that incorporates ±20% variability in temperature-dependent material strength, offering a physically grounded yet conservative risk estimate. From this, a normalized risk index is derived to evaluate the likelihood of damage initiation in critical regions over the 0–10 s firing window. The results indicate that the convergent throat region experiences a peak thermal gradient rate of approximately 380 K/s, with the normalized thermal shock index exceeding 43. Stress margins in this region collapse by 2.3 s, while margin loss in the flange curvature appears near 8 s. These findings are mapped into green, yellow, and red risk bands to classify operational safety zones. All the results assume no active cooling, representing conservative operating limits. If regenerative or ablative cooling is implemented, these margins would improve significantly. The framework established here enables a transparent, reproducible methodology for evaluating lifetime safety in ceramic propulsion nozzles and serves as a foundational tool for fatigue-resilient component design in green space engines. Recreational diving depends on healthy marine ecosystems, yet it can harm biodiversity through species displacement and habitat damage. Bombinhas, a biodiverse diving hotspot in southern Brazil, faces growing threats from human activity and climate change. This study assessed the ecological structure of Sepultura Beach (2018) for potential diving trails, comparing it with historical data from Porto Belo Island. Using visual censuses, transects, and photo-quadrats across six sampling campaigns, researchers documented 2419 organisms from five zoological groups, identifying 14 dominant species, including Haemulon aurolineatum and Diplodus argenteus. Cluster analysis revealed three ecological zones, with higher biodiversity at the site’s edges (Groups 1 and 3), but these areas also hosted endangered species like Epinephelus marginatus, complicating trail planning. A major concern was the widespread bleaching of the zoanthid Palythoa caribaeorum, a key ecosystem engineer, likely due to rising sea temperatures (+1.68 °C from 1961–2018) and declining chlorophyll-a levels post-2015. Comparisons with past data showed a 0.33 °C increase in species’ thermal preferences over 17 years, alongside lower trophic levels and greater ecological vulnerability, indicating tropicalization from the expanding Brazil Current. While Sepultura Beach’s biodiversity supports diving tourism, conservation efforts must address coral bleaching and endangered species protection. Long-term monitoring is crucial to track warming impacts, and adaptive management is needed for sustainable trail development. The study highlights the urgent need to balance ecotourism with climate resilience in subtropical marine ecosystems. Full article

This study evaluates the performance degradation of spray rigid polyurethane foam (RPUF) insulation on reservoir dam structures under multi-physics coupling conditions. Focusing on characteristic environmental exposures in Hot Summer and Cold Winter (HSCW) climate zones, accelerated aging tests simulating coupled temperature–humidity effects were conducted to comparatively analyze the thermal resistance and durability evolution between unprotected and encapsulated RPUF configurations. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), infrared spectroscopy (IR), and other methods were used to characterize and analyze the structure of RPUF. Research has shown that in HSCW climate zones, the thermal conductivity of RPUF gradually increases with the number of degradation cycles, and the insulation performance decreases, mainly due to the damage of the pore structure caused by temperature aging and the combined effect of moisture absorption aging. In comparison, the RPUF after protection can effectively slow down the rate and degree of decline of its insulation performance. On this basis, a time-varying prediction model for the thermal conductivity of RPUF under long-term service in HSCW climate environments was fitted, providing a scientific basis for the durability evaluation of reservoir dam insulation. An asphalt modifier dry-process direct-cast oil-rich high-viscosity high-elasticity (OR-HV-HE) was developed to address the climatic characteristics of seasonal freezing zones. The chemical composition of the OR-HV-HE modifier was optimized through orthogonal testing. Advanced characterization techniques, including thermogravimetric analysis (TG), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), were employed to systematically analyze the comprehensive thermal properties, microstructure, and chemical characteristics of the OR-HV-HE asphalt. Test results revealed a linear inverse relationship between the melt index and the OR-HV-HE asphalt grafting rate. The addition of the OR-HV-HE modifier led to the generation of new chemical bonds, and microscopic mechanism analysis illustrated the formation of a cross-linking network structure between the OR-HV-HE and asphalt, in which the cross-linking network structure could enhance the high and low-temperature performance of asphalt. Road performance verification results demonstrated that when compared with the traditional SBS-modified asphalt mixture, the OR-HV-HE modified asphalt mixture exhibited significantly superior road performance indices: the high-temperature dynamic stability was increased by 468% and the low-temperature damage strain was increased by 47.5%, and the residual stability reached 99%. Film cooling has been increasingly applied in turbine blade cooling design due to its excellent cooling performance. Although film-cooled blades demonstrate superior cooling effectiveness, the perforation design on blade surfaces compromises structural integrity, making fatigue failure prone to occur at cooling holes. Previous studies by domestic and international scholars have extensively investigated factors influencing film cooling effectiveness, including blowing ratio and hole geometry configurations. However, most research has overlooked the investigation of fatigue life in film-cooled blades. This paper systematically investigates blade fatigue life under various cooling air parameters by analyzing the relationships among cooling effectiveness, stress distribution, and fatigue life. Results indicate that maximum stress concentrations occur at cooling hole locations and near the blade root at trailing edge regions. While cooling holes effectively reduce blade surface temperature, they simultaneously create stress concentration zones around the apertures. Both excessive and insufficient cooling air pressure and temperature reduce thermal fatigue life, with optimal parameters identified as 600 K cooling temperature and 0.75 MPa pressure, achieving a maximum thermal fatigue life of 3400 cycles for this blade configuration. A thermal shock test platform was established to conduct fatigue experiments under selected cooling conditions. Initial fatigue damage traces emerged at cooling holes after 1000 cycles, with progressive damage expansion observed. By 3000 cycles, cooling holes near blade tip regions exhibited the most severe failure, demonstrating near-complete functional degradation. These findings provide critical references for cooling parameter selection in practical aeroengine applications of film-cooled blades. Full article

Glass-based microfluidic devices are essential for applications such as diagnostics and drug discovery, which utilize their optical clarity and chemical stability. This review systematically analyzes pulsed laser micromachining as a transformative technique for fabricating glass-based microfluidic devices, addressing the limitations of conventional methods. By examining three pulse regimes—long (≥nanosecond), short (picosecond), and ultrashort (femtosecond)—this study evaluates how laser parameters (fluence, scanning speed, pulse duration, repetition rate, wavelength) and glass properties influence ablation efficiency and quality. A higher fluence improves the material ablation efficiency across all the regimes but poses risks of thermal damage or plasma shielding in ultrashort pulses. Optimizing the scanning speed balances the depth and the surface quality, with slower speeds enhancing the channel depth but requiring heat accumulation mitigation. Shorter pulses (femtosecond regime) achieve greater precision (feature resolution) and minimal heat-affected zones through nonlinear absorption, while long pulses enable rapid deep-channel fabrication but with increased thermal stress. Elevating the repetition rate improves the material ablation rates but reduces the surface quality. The influence of wavelength on efficiency and quality varies across the three pulse regimes. Material selection is critical to outcomes and potential applications: fused silica demonstrates a superior surface quality due to low thermal expansion, while soda–lime glass provides cost-effective prototyping. The review emphasizes the advantages of laser micromachining and the benefits of a wide range of applications. Future directions should focus on optimizing the process parameters to improve the efficiency and quality of the produced devices at a lower cost to expand their uses in biomedical, environmental, and quantum applications. Salts can have detrimental effects on asphalt pavements, leading to permanent damage that compromises their durability and sustainability. This study investigates the damage mechanisms of asphalt pavements under coupled salt–thermal–mechanical effects using multi-scale modeling. Pull-off and semicircular bending (SCB) tests were conducted to determine material parameters and validate numerical models. Experimental data demonstrated that after 48 h of salt treatment at −10 °C, specimens exhibited reductions in cohesive strength ranging from 23.5% to 26% and adhesive strength decreasing by 25% to 44% compared to untreated controls. More severe degradation was observed at 0 °C, with cohesive strength diminishing by up to 63.8% and adhesive strength declining by up to 71.6%. A multi-scale finite element (FE) pavement model incorporating cohesive zone modeling (CZM) was developed to simulate damage behavior within asphalt concrete. Salt diffusion analysis revealed limited penetration depth within short exposure periods, and results showed that salt penetration reached only about 10 mm into the pavement layers after 48 h. Results indicated significant reductions in adhesive and cohesive strengths due to salt exposure, with damage susceptibility increasing under combined thermal fluctuations and mechanical loading. Additionally, the effects of moving load magnitude and speed on pavement damage were examined, showing higher damage accumulation at lower speeds and heavier loads. This research provides insights into pavement deterioration mechanisms, contributing to improved durability and maintenance strategies for asphalt pavements in salt environments. Full article

In recent years, the frequency and severity of large-scale forest fires have increased globally, threatening forest ecosystems, human lives, and property while potentially triggering cascading ecological and social crises. Despite significant advancements in remote sensing-based forest fire monitoring, early warning systems, and fire risk zoning, post-fire thermal damage assessment remains insufficiently addressed. This study introduces an innovative approach combining multispectral imaging with a dual annealing constrained optimization algorithm to enable dynamic monitoring of fire temperature distribution. Based on this method, we develop a dynamic thermal damage assessment model to quantify thermal impacts during forest fires. The proposed model provides valuable insights for defining thermal damage zones, optimizing evacuation strategies, and supporting firefighting operations, ultimately enhancing emergency response and forest fire management efficiency. The Loess Plateau region of China has an anomalous climate and frequent geological disasters. Hipparion laterite in seasonally frozen regions exhibits heightened susceptibility to freeze–thaw (F-T) cycling, which induces progressive structural weakening and significantly elevates the risk of slope instability through mechanisms including pore water phase transitions, aggregate disintegration, and shear strength degradation. This study focuses on the slip zone Hipparion laterite from the Nao panliang landslide in Fugu County, Shaanxi Province. We innovatively integrated F-T cycling tests with ring-shear experiments to establish a hydro-thermal–mechanical coupled multi-scale evaluation framework for assessing F-T damage in the slip zone material. The microstructural evolution of soil architecture and pore characteristics was systematically analyzed through scanning electron microscopy (SEM) tests. Quantitative characterization of mechanical degradation mechanisms was achieved using advanced microstructural parameters including orientation frequency, probabilistic entropy, and fractal dimensions, revealing the intrinsic relationship between pore network anisotropy and macroscopic strength deterioration. The experimental results demonstrate that Hipparion laterite specimens undergo progressive deterioration with increasing F-T cycles and initial moisture content, predominantly exhibiting brittle deformation patterns. The soil exhibited substantial strength degradation, with total reduction rates of 51.54% and 43.67% for peak and residual strengths, respectively. The shear stress–displacement curves transitioned from strain-softening to strain-hardening behavior, indicating plastic deformation-dominated shear damage. Moisture content critically regulates pore microstructure evolution, reducing micropore proportion to 23.57–28.62% while promoting transformation to mesopores and macropores. At 24% moisture content, the areal porosity, probabilistic entropy, and fractal dimension increased by 0.2263, 0.0401, and 0.0589, respectively. Temperature-induced pore water phase transitions significantly amplified mechanical strength variability through cyclic damage accumulation. These findings advance the theoretical understanding of Hipparion laterite’s engineering geological behavior while providing critical insights for slope stability assessment and landslide risk mitigation strategies in loess plateau regions. When developing deep subsurface infrastructure in areas with intense geothermal activity, the significant temperature gradient inevitably leads to low-temperature contraction and high-temperature expansion of the rock body, resulting in changes in the rock’s mechanical properties. These thermodynamic effects can easily lead to the destabilization and subsequent collapse of the rock. There exists a pressing necessity to methodically evaluate the surrounding rock stability encountered in deep underground engineering under the action of thermal-solid coupling. This study constructed a multi-physical field coupling nonlinear calculation model based on a high-precision three-dimensional finite difference method, systematically analyzed the interdependent effects between the original rock temperature and excavation-induced disturbance, and then analyzed the dynamic changes in temperature, stress, and displacement fields along with plastic zone of surrounding rock of the deep underground engineering under thermal-solid coupling. The results indicate that the closer to the excavation contour surface, the lower the surrounding rock temperature, while the temperature gradient increased correspondingly. The farther away from the excavation contour face, the closer the temperature was to the original rock temperature. As the original rock temperature climbed from 30 °C to 90 °C, the increment of vault displacement was 2.45 times that of arch bottom displacement, and the influence of temperature change on vault deformation was more significant. The horizontal displacement magnitudes at the different original temperatures followed the following order: sidewall > spandrel > skewback, and at an original rock temperature of 90 °C, the sidewall horizontal displacement reached 15.31 cm. With the elevation of the original rock temperature, the distribution range and concentration degree of the maximum and minimum principal stresses increased obviously, and both were compression-dominated. The types of plastic zones in the surrounding rock were mainly characterized by shear stress-induced yielding and tensile stress-induced damage failure. When the original rock temperature increased to 90 °C, the rock mass extending up to 1.5 m from the excavation contour surface formed a large area of damage zone. The closer the working face was to the monitoring section, the faster the temperature dropped, and the displacement changed in the monitoring section. The findings offer a theoretical basis for engineering practice, and it is of great significance to ensure the safety of the project. Full article

One of the common reliability tests performed on power modules for automotive applications is passive thermal cycling, which is conventionally representative of the highly demanding thermomechanical loads typical of steady-state operating conditions. The mechanical response of the electronics devices subjected to such testing procedures, in terms of stress-strain response and of damage, is usually predicted by finite elements analyses where the remarkable nonlinearities intrinsic in the phenomena need to be properly addressed. This work regards the FEM modeling of the thermomechanical behavior of a power electronics package subjected to thermal cycles, focusing on the critical importance of modeling the complete elastoplastic behavior of materials, in contrast to the conventional elastic approach. By incorporating the full elastoplastic properties, the study aims to accurately evaluate the actual irreversible deformations and resulting stresses that develop within the package subjected to a representative passive thermal cycle and to compare the outcomes to those from purely elastic simulations. Additionally, damage models are compared for predicting the local detachment of the encapsulating resin from other layers. The predictions of the cohesive zone model (CZM) applied to a conventional interface layer are compared to those of a modified Tresca (MT) stress-dependent damage model applied to the resin bulk material. In addition, the estimate of linear-nonlinear evolutions of plastic strain and of damage at increasing numbers of cycles is investigated in the attempt to identify procedures for guessing the long-term mechanical response from short-term simulations. This paper reports an investigation of the thermomechanical behavior at the interface of GFRP/Al composite stacks when the stacking arrangement varies. A temperature-coupled damage approach was developed to simulate thermal energy transfer and damage propagation at metallic-to-composite interface. The proposed model was then implemented into ABAQUS/Explicit finite element code using user-defined subroutine VUMAT finely imbricated with VDFLUX. Unlike to previous models, oblique cutting configuration (OCC) involving double-inclination of the tool was proposed to simulate finely the material removal process owing to drill action. Drilling trials involving the cutting speed and the stacking arrangement were conducted to support the proposed approach. The predictions revealed that increasing the spindle speed significantly impacts the temperature distribution and subsurface thermal damage. An exponential temperature law was derived for predicting temperature variation with the cutting speed and identifying thermal saturation at the interface. The sensitivity of the composite behavior to the stacking arrangement (GFRP → Al vs. Al → GFRP) was well highlighted. The results indicated that attacking the structure from the GFRP side results in higher interfacial temperatures due to GFRP’s lower thermal conductivity. These findings contribute to understanding the heat-affected zone in GFRP, and, hence, provide guidance to minimize thermal damage in industrial drilling of the hybrid stacks. Full article

Experimental Study on the Burning Characteristics of Photovoltaic Modules with Different Inclination Angles Under the Pool Fire

Mountain photovoltaic (PV) power stations cover vast areas and contain dense equipment. Once direct current arc faults occur in PV modules, they can pose a serious thermal threat to surrounding facilities and combustible materials, potentially resulting in a PV array fire accident. In this work, a series of PV module fire experiments were conducted to investigate the burning characteristics of PV modules exposed to the pool fire. The burning process, burning damage extent, and temperature distribution were measured and analyzed. The results showed that the surfaces of PV modules exhibited different burning characteristics due to the pool fire. Based on different characteristics, the front side was classified into four zones: intact zone, delamination zone, carbonization zone and burn-through zone. The back side was similarly divided into four zones: undamaged backsheet zone, burnt TPT zone, cell detachment zone and burn-through zone. Meanwhile, the burning process and surface temperature rise rate of intact PV modules were significantly lower than those of cracked modules at the same inclination angle. Cracked modules exhibited a heightened susceptibility to being rapidly burnt through by the pool fire. As the inclination angle increased from 0° to 60°, the burning damage extent and the expansion rate of high-temperature regions initially ascended and subsequently decreased, reaching their maximum at the inclination angle of 15°. These findings can offer valuable insights that can serve as a reference for the fire protection design and risk assessment of mountain PV power stations, ensuring their safe operation. Full article

This work presents a comparative analysis of microwave ablation applicators, including both antenna-based and open waveguide designs, which are guided and inserted into tumors via catheters. Applicators previously proposed in the literature are evaluated through both electromagnetic and thermal simulations. The objective is to assess temperature distribution within the tumor and surrounding healthy tissues; with a focus on identifying patterns of heat diffusion. Although a variety of applicators have been designed, each typically operates at different central frequency or targets specific tumor shapes and tissue types. In this study, we standardize conditions by analyzing multiple applicators’ designs for the same tumor type. The results highlight the shape of the ablation zone and corresponding temperature distribution, offering insights into potential healthy tissue damage. This comparative analysis provides critical information for optimizing microwave ablation applicators for more precise and effective treatment. Full article
