Temporary plugging acidizing is a critical well stimulation technique for improving water absorption profiles and addressing low/zero water intake in individual intervals of heterogeneous reservoirs, serving as a core measure for production stabilization and enhancement in mature oilfields. However, there remains an urgent demand for balanced stimulation technologies tailored to the unique reservoir conditions of offshore water injection wells. In this study, targeting the reservoir characteristics of the target offshore oilfield, we systematically investigated the effects of Temporary Plugging Agent (TPA) concentration, acid injection slug size, injection rate, and permeability contrast on plugging and diversion performance. Three core innovations are achieved: (1) optimization of a high-strength self-diverting TPA; (2) development of a matched composite retarded acid system; (3) establishment of quantitative process parameter design methods for temporary plugging acidizing in heterogeneous reservoirs. Based on these, a high-strength balanced plugging removal technology for water injection wells was developed. This technology enables balanced stimulation of thin interbeds in offshore water injection wells with large vertical spans, long treatment intervals, and significant variations in reservoir properties and formation pressure, providing robust technical support for optimizing water absorption profiles, achieving precise layer-by-layer stimulation, and enhancing waterflood development efficiency. In oil and gas production, reservoir heterogeneity causes plugging removal fluids to preferentially enter high-permeability zones, hindering effective production enhancement in low-permeability reservoirs. Traditional chemical diverting agents exhibit insufficient stability in high-temperature, high-salinity environments, risking secondary damage. To address these challenges, this study developed a water-sensitive self-thickening emulsion, targeting improved high-temperature stability, selective plugging, and easy flowback performance. Formulation optimization was achieved via orthogonal experiments and oil–water ratio adjustment, combined with particle size regulation and viscosity characterization. Core plugging experiments demonstrated the new emulsion system’s applicability and diverting effects. Results showed that under 150 °C and 15 × 104 mg/L NaCl, the emulsion maintained a stable viscosity of above 302.7 mPa·s, with particle size D50 increasing from 31.1 μm to 71.2 μm, exceeding API RP 13A’s 100 mPa·s threshold for acidizing diverters, providing an efficient plugging solution for high-temperature, high-salinity reservoirs. The injection pressure difference in high-permeability cores stabilized at 2.1 MPa, significantly enhancing waterflood sweep efficiency. The self-thickening mechanism, driven by salt-induced droplet coalescence, enables selective plugging in heterogeneous formations, as validated by core flooding tests showing a 40% higher pressure differential in high-permeability zones compared to conventional systems. Geothermal energy plays a crucial role in the large-scale deep decarbonisation process and the transition of energy structure in our country. Due to the complex reservoir environment of geothermal energy, characterised by low porosity and permeability, conventional fracturing methods struggle to create a complex network of fractures. Temporary plugging and diverting fracturing technology (TPDF) is a key technology to improve the efficiency of geothermal reservoir extraction. However, there is still a lack of knowledge about the migration and sealing law of temporary plugging agents in complex fractures. Therefore, in this study, two multiphase flow models of temporary plugging particle transport at the fracture slit and inside the complex fracture were established by using a Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD)-Discrete Element Method (DEM) algorithm. The influence of fracturing fluid concentration, temperature, the concentration of temporary plugging particles, and particle size combinations on migration blocking in fractures was investigated. The simulation results indicate the following: High-viscosity fracturing fluid may cause plugging particles to adhere to each other to form clusters of plugging particles, reducing dispersion during transport and slowing down the velocity of the plugging particles. A particle concentration that is too high does not have a better temporary plugging effect. The use of different combinations of particle sizes is significantly better than using a single particle size, which is a key factor for the success of fracture plugging. The research findings are of great theoretical and practical significance for scaled-up, vibration-controlled fracturing technology in geothermal reservoirs. Full article

Shale oil reservoirs in the Daanzhai section of central Sichuan are mainly developed in the Daer subsection, with a rich resource base and great exploration and development potential. However, the shale oil reservoir is characterized by shale and limestone interactions, poor physical properties, undeveloped fractures, and large differences in the fracture pressure of interactive reservoirs. Therefore, it is necessary to use temporary plugging and diverting fracturing technology to improve the complexity of fractures in reservoir reconstruction. To this end, an experimental device was innovatively established that takes into account the morphology of fractures and the permeability of reservoirs, and it can evaluate the temporary blocks and turns within third-level fractures in a reservoir. It can simulate third-level turning fractures under conditions involving 3–15 mm crack openings and different roughness values. Using this device and method, the combination and particle-size optimization experiments involving the temporary plugging agents used in the field were carried out, and the field tests were carried out in Well Long’an 1 and Well Ren’an 1 in the Sichuan Basin. The test results show that the pressure response after temporary plugging is obvious, which can significantly improve microseismic event points and increase the reservoir’s reconstruction volume. Compared with Well Nanchong 2H, the length in kilometers of the SRV after tackling key problems increases from 3918 × 104 m3 to 4578 × 104 m3, an increase of 17%. The average crack length increased from 265 m to 321 m, an increase of 21%, achieving a significant breakthrough in the “oil production gap”. Full article

Temporary plugging diversion fracturing (TPDF) technology has been widely used in various oil fields for repeated reconstruction of high-water-cut old oil wells and horizontal well reservoir reconstruction. Previous studies have carried out in-depth study on the pressure-bearing law and placement morphology of different types of temporary plugging agents (TPAs) in fractures, but there are relatively few studies on TPA accumulation body permeability. To solve this problem, an experimental device for evaluating the TPA performance with adjustable fracture pores is proposed in this paper. Based on the test of fracturing fluid breaking time and residue content, the low damage of fracturing fluid to the reservoir is determined. The TPA degradation performance test determines whether the TPA causes damage to the hydraulic fracture after the temporary plugging fracturing. Finally, by testing the TPA pressure-bearing capacity and the temporary plugging aggregation body permeability, the plugging performance and the aggregation body permeability are determined. The results show the following: (1) Guar gum fracturing fluid shows good gel-breaking performance under the action of breaking agent, and the recommended concentration of breaking agent is 300 ppm. At 90~120 °C, the degradation rate of the three types of TPAs can reach more than 65%, and it can be effectively carried into the wellbore during the fracturing fluid flowback stage to achieve the effect of removing the TPA in the fracture. (2) The results of the pressure-bearing performance of the TPA show that the two kinds of TPAs can quickly achieve the plugging effect after plugging start: the effect of ZD-2 (poly lactic-co-glycolic acid (PLGA)) particle-and-powder combined TPA on forming an effective temporary plugging accumulation body in fractures is better than that of ZD-1 (PLGA) pure powder. There are large pores between the particles, and the fracturing fluid can still flow through the pores, so the ZD-3 (a mixture of lactide and PLGA) granular temporary plugging agent cannot form an effective plugging. (3) The law of length of the temporary plugging accumulation body shows that the ZD-2 combined TPA has stronger plugging ability for medium-aperture simulated fracture pores, while the ZD-1 powder TPA has stronger plugging ability for small aperture simulated fracture pores, and the ZD-3 granular TPA should be avoided alone as far as possible. This study further enriches and improves the understanding of the mechanism of temporary plugging diverting fracturing fluid. Full article

Baikouquan oil field is composed of multiple interbedded, thin, low-permeability layers, which are required to vertically fracture multiple layers and to create complex fractures for economic development. However, conventional fracture technologies create a single, simple fracture, having poor feasibility for this field. Therefore, we conducted research on fracturing technology by spontaneously selecting geologic sweet spots based on diversion. This technology can vertically fracture the thin layers one by one and horizontally divert the fracture to non-depleted areas. Firstly, a triaxial diverted fracturing experiment approach was setup, and then diverted fracturing experiments were carried out to verify the feasibility of diverted fracturing and to study the fracture geometry and the law of diversion. Next, experiments were carried out to evaluate the performance of the diversion agents. The valuated properties comprise the diversion pressure, stability time, and degradation based on which to optimize the selection of the diversion agents. Finally, the fracturing technology was applied to well b21004 of Baikouquan oil field, and post-frac performance was evaluated. The experimental results show that multiple and complex fractures are realized through temporary plugging. Diversion performance evaluation tests show that a 4 wt% concentration of 1–5 mm granules + 20/60 mesh powder and a 3 wt% concentration of 1–7 mm granules + 20/60 mesh powder + fiber can hold up enough pressure to force the fracture to divert. The field treating pressure curve shows that there is a 3–10 MPa pressure increase when there are pump diversion agents, which is a clear sign of fracture diversion. Plugging the fracture mouth gives a faster and a higher incremental pressure. Before this fracturing, the well had almost stopped oil production. After the stimulation, the initial oil production rate became 20 + t/d, which shows the effectiveness of this fracturing technology for Baikouquan oil field. Full article

Temporary plugging and diverting fracturing (TPDF) is widely used to improve the stimulation effectiveness in coal seam. To study the fracture propagation behavior during TPDF in coal formation, a series of laboratory hydraulic fracturing experiments were performed on natural coal samples. Based on the results of sample splitting and fracture reconstruction, the influences of horizontal stress difference and the size of temporary plugging agent (TPA) as well as the concentration of TPA on hydraulic fracture growth were analyzed. Experimental results show that TPDF is beneficial for improving the fracture complexity even under high stress difference of 8 MPa. When the TPA of small particle size (70/100 mesh) was applied, the primary fracture could not be fully blocked whereas increasing the particle size of TPA to 20/40 mesh tended to cause accumulation and bridging in the wellbore, resulting in an abnormally high fracturing pressure. TPA with particle size of 40/70 mesh tended to be a reasonable choice for the target formation, as it could form effective plugging in primary fractures and promote the generation of new fractures. Meanwhile, optimizing the concentration of TPA was also conducive to improving the plugging effectiveness. Effective temporary plugging can be achieved by using appropriate TPA of proper size and concentration, which varies with different treatment parameters and formations. Laboratory experiments are expected to provide guidance for the parameter optimization for TPDF in coal seam. Full article

Temporary plugging fracturing in a horizontal well with multi-stages and multi-clusters is usually used to improve stimulation efficiency and increase the gas production from shale gas reservoirs. However, the fracture propagation geometry and the mechanism of temporary plugging are still unclear, which restricts the further optimization of temporary plugging fracturing scheme. In this study, taking the Longmaxi shale as the research object and considering the intrafracture and intrastage temporary plugging, the true tri-axial hydraulic fracturing system was used to put forward an experimental method for simulating the temporary plugging fracturing in a horizontal well with multi-stages and multi-clusters. Afterward, the effects of the size combination and concentration of temporary plugging agents and the cluster number in a stage on the fracture geometry created in the secondary fracturing were investigated in detail. The results show that an optimal fracture propagation geometry tends to be obtained by using the combinations of 100 to 20/70 mesh, and 20/70 to 10~18 mesh temporary plugging agents for the intrafracture and intrastage temporary plugging, respectively. Increasing the proportion of the temporary plugging agent of a larger particle size can improve the effectiveness of intrafracture and intrastage temporary plugging fracturing, and tends to open new fractures. With the increase in temporary plugging agent concentration and the cluster number within a stage, both the number of diverting fractures formed and the overall complexity of fractures tend to increase. After fracturing, the rock specimen with a high peak in the temporary plugging pressure curve has more transverse fractures, indicating a desirable diversion effect. By contrast, the fractured rock specimen with a low peak pressure has no transverse fracture, generally with fewer fractures and poor diversion effect. Full article
