This study assessed the effectiveness of stress-based cognitive-behavioral training compared to standard training in firefighters, emphasizing their ability to distribute extinguishing water and cool environments evenly during enclosure fires. Experiments took place at the Zbiroh training facility with two firefighter teams (Team A with stress-based training and Team B with standard training) under realistic conditions. Using 58 thermocouples and 4 radiometers, temperature distribution and radiant heat flux were measured to evaluate water distribution efficiency and cooling performance during interventions. Team A consistently achieved temperature reductions of approximately 320 °C in the upper layers and 250–400 °C in the middle layers, maintaining stable conditions, whereas Team B only achieved partial cooling, with upper-layer temperatures remaining at 750–800 °C. Additionally, Team A recorded lower radiant heat flux densities (e.g., 20.74 kW/m2 at 0°) compared to Team B (21.81 kW/m2), indicating more effective water application and adaptability. The findings confirm that stress-based training enhances firefighters’ operational readiness and their ability to distribute water effectively during interventions. This skill is essential for safer and effective management of indoor fires under extreme conditions. This study supports the inclusion of stress-based and scenario-based training in firefighter education to enhance safety and operational performance. Full article

This study focuses on Shanghai, a pioneer city in China’s community renewal practices. In recent years, community renewal driven by civic participation has become a prominent research topic, leading to the emergence of numerous exemplary cases in Shanghai. However, field investigations revealed that many projects have experienced varying degrees of physical deterioration and a decline in spatial vitality due to insufficient maintenance, reflecting unsustainable outcomes. In response, this study examines a bottom-up community renewal project led by the research team, aiming to explore how broad civic participation can promote sustainable community renewal. A multidisciplinary approach incorporating perspectives from ecology, the humanities, economics, and sociology was used to guide citizen participation, while participatory observation methods recorded emotional shifts and maintenance behavior throughout the process. The results showed that civic participatory actions under the guidance of sustainability principles effectively enhanced citizens’ sense of community identity and responsibility, thereby facilitating the sustainable upkeep and operation of community spaces. However, the study also found that bottom-up efforts alone are insufficient. Sustainable community renewal also requires top-down policy support and institutional safeguards. At the end, the paper concludes by summarizing the practical outcomes and proposing strategies and mechanisms for broader application, aiming to provide a reference for related practices and research. This study dives into what drives people to use AR filters in the catering industry, focusing on the Hong Kong market. The main idea is to determine how “perceived value” shapes users’ intentions to engage with these filters. To do this, the research combines concepts from two popular models—the extended Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) and the Satisfaction–Loyalty Model (SLM)—to understand what influences perceived value. The survey data were then analyzed with Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) to see how perceived usefulness, enjoyment, satisfaction, and value connect to users’ intentions. The results showed that “perceived value” is a big deal—the main factor driving whether people want to use AR filters. Things like how useful or enjoyable the filters are and how satisfied users feel all play a role in shaping this perceived value. These findings are gold for marketing teams and AR developers, especially in the catering world. Combining TAM and the Satisfaction–Loyalty Model offers a fresh perspective on how AR technology influences consumer behavior. On top of that, it gives practical advice for businesses looking to make the most of AR filters in their marketing and customer experience strategies. Full article

Due to globalization, companies are exposed to a culturally diversified workforce; therefore, great emphasis is placed on identifying the most effective leadership style that would be able to manage such a workforce. Although numerous studies have attempted to identify successful leadership styles in different cultural settings, none have focused on the perceptions of top managers who work in multinational corporations (MNCs) in culturally diversified surroundings. Thus, our research attempts to identify the most preferred leadership style and characteristics from the perspective of top managers in MNCs in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The 13 leadership characteristics analyzed in this study were generated from the 21 characteristics found by Global Leadership and Organizational Behavior Effectiveness (GLOBE) research. The participants, top managers in MNCs, needed to evaluate leadership styles by considering leadership characteristics. To ensure the objectiveness of the study, we analyzed their answers by applying the Fuzzy Technique for Order of Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution (TOPSIS) method. The results indicated that the most preferred leadership characteristics were visionary, inspirational, collaborative team-oriented, and performance-oriented. Moreover, the transformational leadership style emerged as the most preferred leadership style. The study’s findings show that top managers believe that employees in MNCs in the UAE seek a leader with a vision who will inspire, motivate, and help them fulfill their true potential. Full article

Paraprofessionals play a crucial role in supporting both teachers and students within a classroom, even though the specifics of their duties vary. While their responsibilities involve supporting student achievement, research has shed light that many paraprofessionals feel unprepared for their responsibilities in the classroom. This study aimed to address a gap in the existing literature by exploring how a professional development program that mirrors the trainings special education teachers receive would impact paraprofessionals and help them feel more prepared for their responsibilities in the classroom. Employing a generic qualitative methodology, this study sought to capture the experiences of 43 paraprofessionals. Data collection involved an online open-ended questionnaire at the start and conclusion of the school year. The study’s outcomes revealed five patterns in the data: (a) paraprofessionals struggled with collaborating with classroom teams at the start of the school year, (b) paraprofessionals struggled with managing student behavior at the start of the school year, (c) professional development was helpful to most of the paraprofessionals, (d) professional development led to better preparedness to address challenging behavior, and (e) professional development led to better preparedness to address the instructional needs of students with disabilities. Following a thorough analysis and synthesis, these patterns were condensed into two general themes: the importance of professional development for paraprofessionals and the importance of presenting the professional development that teachers receive on a continuous basis to paraprofessionals as well. These findings are significant for school leaders and educators, as they highlight the importance of providing professional development to paraprofessionals while supporting students with disabilities. Drawing on a panel dataset of 27,972 firm-year observations from Chinese A-share listed companies spanning 2009 to 2022, this study employs fixed-effects models to examine the nonlinear relationship between firm-level climate policy uncertainty (FCPU) and corporate green governance expenditure (GGE). The results reveal a robust inverted U-shaped pattern: moderate levels of FCPU encourage firms to increase GGE, while excessive uncertainty discourages it. Financing constraints mediate this relationship; specifically, FCPU exhibits a U-shaped impact on financing constraints, initially easing and then tightening them. Older top management teams accelerate the GGE downturn, while government environmental expenditure delays it, acting as a buffer. Heterogeneity analyses reveal the inverted U-shaped effect is more pronounced for non-polluting firms and state-owned enterprises (SOEs). This study highlights the complex dynamics of FCPU on corporate green behavior, underscoring the importance of climate policy stability and transparency for advancing corporate environmental engagement in China. Background: Equine-assisted experiential learning (EAL) is an emerging approach that uses human–horse interactions to develop leadership skills through experiential methods. Purpose: This review synthesizes the literature on the role of EAL in developing leadership competencies and explores its implications for workplace learning. Design/methodology/approach: A narrative review was conducted examining empirical studies and theoretical frameworks on EAL and leadership development. Findings/Conclusions: Recent studies show EAL improves self-awareness, emotional intelligence, nonverbal communication, trust building, adaptability, and problem solving. These competencies are fostered through activities such as ground-based exercises, join-up techniques, and trust-building tasks, which require congruence between intention and action. Participants report behavioral changes such as improved empathy, clarity under pressure, and team cohesion. These align with core management skills for organizational performance. Implications: EAL complements traditional leadership training by developing relational and embodied leadership skills, including trust building, adaptability, and emotional intelligence, which contribute to organizational resilience and sustainable growth. The heart is innervated by the autonomic nervous system (ANS), which plays a role in regulating the heart rate. Cross-country mountain biking (MTBXC) is a sport with high physiological demands, where the autonomic nervous system plays a significant role. The main objective of this study was to analyze the asymmetry of heart rate in Colombian National Team mountain bikers, sub-23 category, during a 20 min cardiovascular autonomic profile test. Method: The cardiovascular autonomic profile was measured through heart rate variability during a 20 min test, divided into eight phases (supine, controlled ventilation at 10 cycles/min, controlled ventilation at 12 cycles/min, postural change, orthostasis, Ruffier test, 1 min recovery, and final recovery) in a group of n = 10 MTB cyclists from the National Sub-23 Team, including 5 males and 5 females. Results: The results for the male athletes were as follows: age: 19 ± 1 years; VO2max: 67.5 mL/kg/min; max power: 355 W; HRmax: 204 bpm. The results for the female athletes were as follows: age: 19 ± 1 years; VOmax: 58.5 mL/kg/min; max power: 265 W; HRmax: 194 bpm. Both genders showed the expected autonomic behavior in each phase. Asymmetrical propagation of heart rate was observed, with a greater deceleration pattern after postural changes and effort and a symmetrical acceleration pattern in these two phases. Discussion: Athletes exhibit increased vagal response compared to non-athletes. Mountain bikers show rapid heart rate reduction after exertion. Conclusion: This study demonstrates how mountain bikers exhibit increased heart rate deceleration following sympathetic stimuli. Full article

This article provides a comprehensive review of gas flow behavior in low-permeability geological media, focusing on its implications for the long-term performance of engineered barriers in underground radioactive waste repositories. Key mechanisms include two-phase flow and gas-driven fracturing, both critical for assessing repository safety. Understanding the generation and migration of gas is crucial for the quantitative assessment of repository performance over extended timescales. The article synthesizes the current research on various types of claystone considered as potential host rocks for repositories, providing a comprehensive analysis of gas transport mechanisms and constitutive models. In addressing the challenges related to multi-field coupling, the article provides practical insights and outlines potential solutions and areas for further research, underscoring the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration to tackle these challenges and push the field forward. In addition, the article evaluates key research projects, such as GMT, FORGE, and DECOVALEX, shedding light on their methodologies, findings, and significant contributions to understanding gas migration in low-permeability geological media. In this context, mathematical modeling becomes indispensable for predicting long-term repository performance under hypothetical future conditions, enhancing prediction accuracy and supporting long-term safety assessments. Finally, the growing interest in gas-driven fracturing is explored, critically assessing the strengths and limitations of current numerical simulation tools, such as TOUGH, the phase-field method, and CODE_BRIGHT. Noteworthy advancements by the CODE_BRIGHT team in gas injection simulation are highlighted, although knowledge gaps remain. The article concludes with a call for innovative approaches to simulate gas fracturing processes more effectively, advocating for advanced modeling techniques and rigorous experimental validation to address existing challenges. Despite recent advances in the treatment of obesity, lifestyle medicine remains foundational to the treatment of individuals with obesity, regardless of the modality chosen by the patient with the guidance of the clinician they are working with, including in conjunction with, as appropriate, anti-obesity medications and metabolic surgery. Lifestyle medicine involves the use of diet, exercise, sleep, stress, and other lifestyle modalities in the treatment of disease. Clinicians and health systems should, after a patient-centered discussion with the patient, do their best to ensure access to lifestyle treatments. Gold standard guidelines recommend intensive, multicomponent lifestyle change programs for obesity treatments with evidence-based diet and exercise counseling and established, theoretically driven behavior change components. Clinicians treating obesity should be aware of their own biases, make efforts to reduce stigmatizing experiences in their practice, and address weight stigma in their treatment plans as needed. A variety of dietary patterns can be used to support patients with obesity, and clinicians should make evidence-based but patient-centered recommendations that aim to maximize adherence. Diet and exercise can play an important role in reducing the side effects of treatment and optimizing outcomes in weight loss, attenuating the effects of metabolic adaptation, and weight maintenance. Exercise should be increased gradually to reduce injury with a goal of 200–300 min (approximately 3.3–5 h) of moderate to vigorous intensity exercise per week to maximize weight maintenance effects with exercise prescriptions customized to patients risks. A variety of practice models can be leveraged along with the use of an interdisciplinary team to provide lifestyle medicine care for those with obesity. Full article

Educators must understand current practices and gaps in knowledge regarding environmental sustainability in simulation education to reduce the environmental impact of plastic waste while still maintaining fidelity in simulation education. Therefore, a scoping review was conducted to answer the PICO question, “In healthcare institutions and hospitals, what are the environmentally sustainable practices that can be translated into simulation labs as best practice?” Fourteen studies were identified through a search of seven databases, critically appraised, and analyzed. Three key themes emerged: (1) the 5 R’s, (2) getting people motivated, and (3) larger external collaboration. These themes highlight practical strategies and motivational factors for sustainable practices. An expanded 5 R’s framework (reduce, reuse, recycle, research, and rethink) was introduced to guide a holistic approach. The literature highlights the importance of education, stakeholder engagement, and clearly defined standards as key drivers for motivating individuals and teams to engage in sustainable behaviors. These efforts are most effective when supported by interdisciplinary collaboration, regulatory frameworks, national policies, and technological innovation. Sustainability initiatives should extend beyond individual institutions to foster broader systemic change. Full article

Promoting behavioral change in mobility is essential for sustainable urban development. This study evaluates the effectiveness of gamified challenges in fostering sustainable travel behaviors among high school students and teachers within the High School Challenge (HSC) 2024 campaign in Lecco, Italy. Over a 13-week period, participants tracked their commuting habits via gamified mobile application, Play&Go, that awarded points for sustainable mobility choices and introduced weekly challenges. Using behavioral (GPS-based tracking) and self-report data, we assessed the influence of challenge types, player characteristics (HEXAD Player Types, Big Five traits), and user experience evaluations on participation, retention, and behavior change. The results show that challenges, particularly those based on walking distances and framed as intra-team goals, significantly enhanced user engagement and contributed to improved mobility behaviors during participants’ free time. Compared to the 2023 edition without challenges, the 2024 campaign achieved better retention. HEXAD Player Types were more predictive of user appreciation than Personality Traits, though these effects were more evident in subjective evaluations than actual behavior. Overall, findings highlight the importance of tailoring gamified interventions to users’ motivational profiles and structuring challenges around SMART principles. This study contributes to the design of behaviorally informed, scalable solutions for sustainable mobility transitions. Full article

Background: The number of people with heart failure (HF) is rapidly increasing globally. Self-care plays a key role in improving HF outcomes. The readiness to engage in heart failure self-care (HFSC) behaviors encompasses a commitment to change and the capacity to make the change. Commitment is a personal investment and value toward enacting self-care and health-related behaviors. Capacity includes an individual’s skills, knowledge, beliefs, previous experience, and resources. Aim: The aim of this study was to describe patient-identified commitment and capacity factors influencing their readiness to carry out HFSC behaviors. Methods: A qualitative study using thematic analysis was conducted using data from 21 interviews to develop readiness for HFSC themes. Results: The commitment themes identified were cultural values and beliefs, social roles, will to live, attitude, self-efficacy, HF perceptions, and general emotional state. Capacity themes included HF literacy, functional capacity, environmental resources, comorbidities, time, cognitive functioning, and social support. Conclusions: Novel themes related to an individual’s commitment to HFSC activities included their will to live and social roles, while time emerged as a consideration in the capacity to engage in self-care. To optimize HF outcomes, people with HF must be ready to engage in HFSC. Evaluating an individual’s readiness for HFSC can focus healthcare team efforts on targeting specific self-care activities that require intervention. Enhancing readiness by intervening with specific commitment and capacity factors is a step toward optimizing HFSC and improving patient outcomes. Full article

Reinforcement learning (RL), a branch of artificial intelligence (AI), is becoming more popular in a variety of application fields such as games, workplaces, and behavioral analysis, due to its ability to model complex decision-making through interaction and feedback. Traditional systems for personality and behavior assessment often rely on self-reported questionnaires, which are prone to bias and manipulation. RL offers a compelling alternative by generating diverse, objective behavioral data through agent–environment interactions. In this paper, we propose a Reinforcement Learning-based framework in a game environment, where agents simulate personality-driven behavior using context-aware policies and exhibit a wide range of realistic actions. Our method, which is based on the OCEAN Five personality model—openness, conscientiousness, extroversion, agreeableness, and neuroticism—relates psychological profiles to in-game decision-making patterns. The agents are allowed to operate in numerous environments, observe behaviors that were modeled using another simulation system (HiDAC) and develop the skills needed to navigate and complete tasks. As a result, we are able to identify the personality types and team configurations that have the greatest effects on task performance and collaboration effectiveness. Using interaction data derived from self-play, we investigate the relationships between behaviors motivated by the personalities of the agents, communication styles, and team outcomes. The results demonstrate that in addition to having an effect on performance, personality-aware agents provide a solid methodology for producing realistic behavioral data, developing adaptive NPCs, and evaluating team-based scenarios in challenging settings. Iterative decision making is deeply embedded in the design process of healthcare facilities. A significant body of literature and practices, most notably Evidence-based Design, explicitly seeks to better inform decisions as a key pathway to achieving improved outcomes. The objective of this systematic review is to explore multiple dimensions of decision making in the healthcare design literature, including interprofessional stakeholder engagement, decision flow elements, and multidisciplinary methodologies aimed at improving decision quality during healthcare facility design processes. This review offers a comprehensive review of 114 papers from the Web of Science, CINAHL, MEDLINE, and Art and Architecture Source. Decisions made during healthcare facility design processes are characterized as complex, highly interdependent, and difficult to reverse with significant implications for human and operational outcomes. The published literature emphasizes decision support generated from ex ante or ex post research. Despite numerous references to the importance of decision making, there are considerable gaps in the study of interprofessional group decision-making dynamics. The adoption and application of decision analysis tools and integrated decision flows are emerging. This review synthesizes current perspectives and methods aimed at improving decision making during the design of healthcare facilities and proposes a potential framework for future investigations of design decision quality.
