Poultry waste composting is a necessary technique for agricultural farm sustainability. Composting is a dynamic process influenced by multiple variables. Humidity and temperature play fundamental roles in analyzing its different phases according to the environment and composting technique. Current developments for monitoring these variables include automation via intelligent Internet of Things (IoT)-based sensor networks for variable tracking. These advancements serve as efficient tools for modeling that facilitate the simulation and prediction of composting process variables to improve system efficiency. Therefore, this paper presents the dynamic modeling of composting via forced aeration processes in high-mountain climates, with the intent of estimating biomass temperature dynamics in different phases using system identification techniques. To this end, four dynamic model estimation structures are employed: transfer function (TF), state space (SS), process (P), and Hammerstein–Wiener (HW). The and model quality, fitting results, and standard error metrics of the different models found in each phase are assessed through residual analysis from each structure by validation with real system data. Our results show that the second-order underdamped multiple-input–single-output (MISO) process model with added noise demonstrates the best fit and validation performance. Full article

Phytate, an antinutritional molecule in poultry feed, can be degraded by applying phytase, but its use in low- and middle-income countries is often limited due to importation instead of local production. Here, inexpensive raw materials were used to optimize the production of a thermostable phytase from an indigenous strain of Bacillus subtilis SP11 that was isolated from a broiler farm in Dhaka. SP11 was identified using 16s rDNA and the fermentation of phytase was optimized using a Plackett–Burman design and response surface methodology, revealing that three substrates, including the raw material mustard meal (2.21% w/v), caused a maximum phytase production of 436 U/L at 37 °C and 120 rpm for 72 h, resulting in a 3.7-fold increase compared to unoptimized media. The crude enzyme showed thermostability up to 80 °C (may withstand the feed pelleting process) with an optimum pH of 6 (near pH of poultry small-intestine), while retaining 96% activity at 41 °C (the body temperature of the chicken). In vitro dephytinization demonstrated its applicability, releasing 978 µg of inorganic phosphate per g of wheat bran per hour. This phytase has the potential to reduce the burden of phytase importation in Bangladesh by making local production and application possible, contributing to sustainable poultry nutrition. In recent years, edible insects have gained significant attention as a sustainable and innovative source of feed for animal nutrition due to their excellent content of protein, fats, vitamins, and chitin. Among these, chitin is the least studied nutritional component, despite its promising properties and potential benefits. Chitin, an important polysaccharide found in the exoskeleton of arthropods, including insects, presents both negative and positive aspects in animal nutrition. As is known, the main drawback is its digestibility, which varies among livestock animal species depending on their ability to produce chitinase. However, chitin also exhibits benefits, including the enhancement of gut microbiota and immune response, together with the reduction in cholesterol and pathogen levels in animals. This review aims to summarise the current knowledge on the effects of chitin derived from edible insects on animal nutrition by analysing both the negative aspects and benefits for the different farmed animals for which insect feeding is legally permitted (fish, poultry, and pigs), while proposing future research directions. Does Digital Literacy Increase Farmers’ Willingness to Adopt Livestock Manure Resource Utilization Modes: An Empirical Study from China

Enhancing farmers’ digital literacy is both an inevitable requirement for adapting to the digital age and an important measure for promoting the sustainable development of livestock and poultry manure resource utilization. This study surveyed and obtained data from 1047 farm households in Ningxia and Gansu, two provinces in China that have long implemented livestock manure resource utilization policies, from December 2023 to January 2024, and employed the binary probit model to analyze how digital literacy influences farmers’ willingness to adopt two livestock manure resource utilization modes, as well as to analyze the moderating role of three policy regulations. This paper also explores the heterogeneous results in different village forms and income groups. The results are as follows: (1) Digital literacy significantly and positively impacts farmers’ willingness to adopt both the “household collection” mode and the “livestock community” mode. For every one-unit increase in a farmer’s digital literacy, the probability of farmers’ willingness to adopt the “household collection” mode rises by 22 percentage points, and the probability of farmers’ willingness to adopt the “livestock community” mode rises by 19.8 percentage points. After endogeneity tests and robustness checks, the conclusion still holds. (2) Mechanism analysis results indicate that guiding policy and incentive policy have a positive moderation effect on the link between digital literacy and the willingness to adopt the “household collection” mode. Meanwhile, incentive policy also positively moderates the relationship between digital literacy and the willingness to adopt the “livestock community” mode. (3) Heterogeneity analysis results show that the positive effect of digital literacy on farmers’ willingness to adopt two livestock manure resource utilization modes is stronger in “tight-knit society” rural areas and in low-income households. (4) In further discussion, we find that digital literacy removes the information barriers for farmers, facilitating the conversion of willingness into behavior. The value of this study is as follows: this paper provides new insights for the promotion of livestock and poultry manure resource utilization policies in countries and regions similar to the development process of northwest China. Therefore, enhancing farmers’ digital literacy in a targeted way, strengthening the promotion of grassroots policies on livestock manure resource utilization, formulating diversified ecological compensation schemes, and establishing limited supervision and penalty rules can boost farmers’ willingness to adopt manure resource utilization models. Camelina sativa (CS) is an emerging sustainable oilseed crop with interesting feed application potentialities. The research assessed the potentiality of Camelina sativa (CS) in the diet for free-range laying hens, aiming at reaching a nutritional claim. To this purpose, two feeding groups of hens (n = 100 Livorno hens, n = 25 hens/pen) were farmed outdoor and received either a Control diet, which was a commercial diet for laying hens, or a CS diet. The latter was formulated to include the 5% CS cake and 1% CS oil, replacing conventional feedstuffs. Diets were isoprotein and isoenergy and were available ad libitum throughout the laying period (February–September). At day 1, n = 12 eggs/diet were sampled to assess the initial proximate composition and FA profile. Every 7 days the sampling was repeated to analyze the eggs’ FA profile, up to day 35. At the end of the laying season, n = 6 hens/dietary treatment were slaughtered and subjected to meat quality evaluations. Results highlighted that a 28-day feeding was the period required to obtain 227 mg of C18:3 n-3 and 81 mg of C20:5 n-3 + C22:6 n-3/100 g egg, whereas a further 7 days of feeding trial were ineffective in further enhancing the omega-3 FA content of eggs. CS eggs were comparable to Control ones for overall physical traits, proximate composition, and shelf-life. In addition, at the end of the laying period, the meat of CS hens was also found to be healthier than that of Control ones, thanks to a higher omega-3 FA proportion (p < 0.01), which was, however, not sufficient to reach any nutritional claim. Instead, the proximate composition of CS meat was overall comparable to Control hens. In conclusion, the present research demonstrated that feeding Camelina sativa meal and oil to laying hens is feasible and allows to reach the nutritional claim in eggs “rich in omega-3 FA” after a feeding period of 28 days, without any negative effects on other eggs’ quality trials. Camelina sativa can thus be defined as a promising sustainable feedstuff for the poultry sector for diversification purposes and to enhance the nutritional quality of eggs. Full article

The conservation of poultry biodiversity is a growing global priority, yet it necessarily relies on the scientific valorization of specific local breeds. This study aimed to characterize the lipid composition and cholesterol content of eggs from three native Sicilian chicken breeds (Cornuta, Valplatani, and Siciliana) reared under semi-extensive conditions, in order to evaluate their nutritional potential and support biodiversity preservation strategies. A total of 170 eggs from 11 farms were analyzed. Fatty acid composition and nutritional indices (atherogenic index, thrombogenic index, n-6/n-3 ratio, HH index) were determined according to ISO and AOAC standards. Results showed that Cornuta eggs exhibited the most favorable lipid profile, with the lowest saturated fatty acid (SFA) content (38.55%), the lowest n-6/n-3 ratio (7.35), and the best values for AI (0.52), TI (1.22), and HH (2.02), compared to Valplatani and Siciliana. Conversely, the lowest cholesterol content was found in Siciliana eggs (1463.58 mg/kg), significantly lower than Cornuta (1789 mg/kg; p < 0.05). Although no commercial hybrids were included, the literature data were used for contextual comparison. These findings suggest that native breeds may produce eggs with functional nutritional properties, supporting both healthier food choices and local genetic conservation. Moreover, this study provides a replicable framework for the nutritional valorization of underutilized poultry breeds, reinforcing the role of biodiversity in sustainable food systems. Full article

The consumption and farming of insects are gaining global attention as sustainable alternatives to conventional protein sources. Industrial processing of insects into powders or pastes complicates species identification, raising concerns about product authenticity, food safety, and potential fraud. In Western countries, particularly in Europe, the sector is expanding under a stringent regulatory framework, especially regarding rearing substrates, which hinders economic development. This study aimed to assess the species authenticity of commercial insect-based food and feed products and detect the presence of animal-derived DNA from unauthorized substrates. A total of 119 samples (pure insect meals and processed products) were collected from various origins. Species-specific real-time PCR assays targeted Tenebrio molitor, Hermetia illucens, Alphitobius diaperinus, Acheta domesticus, Bombyx mori, and Gryllodes sigillatus, alongside assays for ruminant, porcine, and poultry DNA. High-throughput sequencing (HTS) using metabarcoding confirmed and broadened species detection. Most samples contained the declared species; however, cases of mislabeling, substitution, and cross-contamination were observed. A few insect meals contained animal DNA which could suggest potential use of prohibited substrates. These findings highlight the urgent need for standardized authentication methods and improved transparency to ensure regulatory compliance, consumer trust, and sustainable development of the insect-based sector. Avian metapneumovirus subtype B (aMPV/B) is an economically significant pathogen in poultry, causing respiratory and reproductive disorders. In this study, 167 clinical samples were collected from commercial poultry farms across Thailand to investigate the prevalence, genetic diversity, and evolutionary dynamics of aMPV/B. Nested RT-PCR targeting the G gene revealed a positivity rate of 34.13% (57/167). Phylogenetic and Median-joining network analyses of sequenced amplicons identified two distinct Thai lineages: one genetically similar to vaccine strains and another of unknown origin. Divergence time analysis using a Bayesian framework estimated the time to the most recent common ancestor (tMRCA) of these lineages around 2006, with further sub-lineage diversification occurring around 2009 and 2016. These findings suggest that the circulating Thai aMPV/B strains likely stem from limited introduction events followed by local evolution. Lineage-specific amino acid substitutions within the G gene were identified, which may affect antigenic properties and immune recognition. This study highlights the molecular heterogeneity and ongoing diversification of aMPV/B in Thailand and underscores the need for sustained genomic surveillance and regionally tailored vaccination strategies. The fermented feed used in broiler production has gained significant attention for its potential to improve growth performance, enhance gut health, and modulate gut microbiota. This review synthesized findings on the effects of both solid and liquid fermented feed in broilers. Fermentation processes enhance nutrient bioavailability; reduce anti-nutritional factors; and generate beneficial metabolites, such as short-chain fatty acids, which contribute to gut health. Incorporating fermented feed in broiler diets has been shown to improve weight gain, the feed conversion ratio, and nutrient absorption by promoting favorable gut morphology changes, including an increased villus height and villus height-to-crypt depth ratios. Additionally, fermented feed fosters a beneficial microbial environment by increasing lactic acid bacteria populations while reducing pathogenic microbes. Fermentation also modulates gut immunity by regulating cytokine production and stimulating immune cell activity. However, challenges such as inconsistent effects on feed intake and growth during the early production stages underscore the need for optimizing fermentation protocols tailored to broiler production systems. Although the implementation of liquid fermented feed presents logistical challenges, research suggests it can significantly improve feed digestibility. Advances in precision fermentation techniques and multi-strain inoculant use hold promise for further improving fermented feed efficacy. Future research should focus on assessing the long-term impacts, economic viability, and environmental sustainability of fermented feed in commercial poultry systems. Overall, fermented feed offers a promising strategy to enhance productivity and sustainability in broiler farming while reducing the reliance on conventional feed additives. This review reflects the body of knowledge at the time of writing. Full article

Since the early 2000s, the poultry industry in our nation has steadily progressed towards a larger scale and increased intensification. However, the growing demand for animal-based protein, combined with significant increases in feed ingredient costs, presents substantial challenges to the advancement of egg production. The regulation of feed utilization efficiency in laying hens is a complex process, influenced by various factors including the farming environment, feed composition, microbial ecosystems, and hormonal dynamics. The feed conversion rate in laying hens not only serves as a critical indicator of agricultural productivity but also highlights the significant impact of molecular technologies in improving feed efficiency. These technological advancements have enhanced the precision and effectiveness of breeding practices while providing substantial support for optimizing feed management, improving production metrics, and promoting sustainable agricultural practices. This comprehensive synthesis of factors, regulatory pathways, and cutting-edge molecular methodologies establishes a biological framework for future breeding strategies. Notably, this review uniquely emphasizes the pivotal role of modern molecular biology techniques—such as genomic selection, transcriptomic profiling, and gene-editing tools—in decoding feed conversion efficiency (FCE), contributing to broader goals of agricultural sustainability by balancing productivity gains with eco-friendly and cost-effective egg production. This comprehensive systematic review critically examines the transformative evolution from traditional acoustic feature extraction—including Mel-Frequency Cepstral Coefficients (MFCCs), spectral entropy, and spectrograms—to cutting-edge deep learning architectures encompassing Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs), Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) networks, attention mechanisms, and groundbreaking self-supervised models such as wav2vec2 and Whisper. The investigation reveals compelling evidence for edge computing deployment via TinyML frameworks, addressing critical scalability challenges in commercial poultry environments characterized by acoustic complexity and computational constraints. Advanced applications spanning emotion recognition, disease detection, and behavioral phenotyping demonstrate unprecedented potential for real-time welfare assessment. Critical knowledge gaps emerge in cross-species domain generalization and contextual acoustic adaptation, demanding urgent research prioritization. The findings underscore explainable AI integration as essential for establishing stakeholder trust and regulatory compliance in automated welfare monitoring systems. This synthesis positions acoustic AI as a cornerstone technology enabling ethical, transparent, and scientifically robust precision livestock farming, bridging computational innovation with biological relevance for sustainable poultry production systems. Future research directions emphasize multi-modal sensor integration, standardized evaluation frameworks, and domain-adaptive models capable of generalizing across diverse poultry breeds, housing conditions, and environmental contexts while maintaining interpretability for practical farm deployment. Gilthead seabream selected for high growth or non-selected were fed in 500 L tanks for 300 days until apparent satiety (AS) or with food restrictions (85AS or 65AS) using a control diet with low FM and FO balanced with vegetable ingredients, and an alternative diet (ALT) where FM was substantially replaced with insect, poultry by-product, feather, and porcine blood meals, while FO was completely replaced by microalgae, poultry, and salmon by-product oils. The ALT diet improved EPA + DHA levels, n-3/n-6 ratio, and fillet hardness. The selected fish outperformed the non-selected ones in growth and were more resilient to ALT diet and feeding restrictions. The 85AS feeding strategy optimized fillet quality by preventing lipid accumulation and muscle adaptations, as observed with the other feeding strategies. Combining sustainable feed formulations, genetic selection, and moderate feed restriction enables a viable, long-term strategy for high-quality, environmentally responsible seabream farming. The presence of aggressive behavior in livestock creates major difficulties for animal welfare, farm safety, economic performance and selective breeding. The two innovative tools of deep learning-based video analysis and transcriptomic profiling have recently appeared to aid the understanding and monitoring of such behaviors. This scoping review assesses the current use of these two methods for aggression research across livestock species and identifies trends while revealing unaddressed gaps in existing literature. A scoping literature search was performed through the PubMed, Scopus and Web of Science databases to identify articles from 2014 to April 2025. The research included 268 original studies which were divided into 250 AI-driven behavioral phenotyping papers and 18 transcriptomic investigations without any studies combining both approaches. Most research focused on economically significant species, including pigs and cattle, yet poultry and small ruminants, along with camels and fish and other species, received limited attention. The main developments include convolutional neural network (CNN)-based object detection and pose estimation systems, together with the transcriptomic identification of molecular pathways that link to aggression and stress. The main barriers to progress in the field include inconsistent behavioral annotation and insufficient real-farm validation together with limited cross-modal integration. Standardized behavior definitions, together with multimodal datasets and integrated pipelines that link phenotypic and molecular data, should be developed according to our proposal. These innovations will speed up the advancement of livestock welfare alongside precision breeding and sustainable animal production. Full article

This study aims to evaluate environmental performance indicators and eco-controls in the poultry production chain in Goiás, with a focus on forest management, waste generation, water resources, energy use, emissions, and environmental accounting. A mixed-methods approach was used, combining qualitative and quantitative data from 13 agro-industrial companies, 230 farms, and 816 broiler houses. The results highlight the role of environmental management accounting (EMA) in monitoring and improving environmental practices, supporting continuous performance assessment. Econometric analysis revealed a positive link between sustainability practices and economic growth, as measured by GDP per capita. However, productive capacity and energy efficiency showed no significant impact at the 5% level. The study limitations include the focus on a single region and industry, which may limit the generalizability of the findings. Future research should expand to other chains and regions to assess broader applicability and explore the public policy impacts on environmental sustainability, as well as the impact of public policies on environmental sustainability within the sector. From Farm to Slaughter: Tracing Antimicrobial Resistance in a Poultry Short Food Chain

Background: Short food supply chains are commonly perceived as more sustainable and safer alternatives to conventional production systems, often linked to organic, free-range livestock practices. Materials and methods: This study investigates, for the first time, the distribution of antimicrobial resistance genes (ARGs) and characterizes the microbial communities’ composition, using 16S rRNA sequencing and real-time PCR, respectively. Eleven fecal, 76 slaughterhouse surface, 11 cecal, and 11 carcass samples, from 11 poultry farms belonging to the same short food chain, were analyzed in the study. Results: While cleaning and disinfection procedures appeared to reduce the bacterial load on slaughterhouse surfaces, diverse and potentially resistant bacteria, including genera such as Staphylococcus and Streptococcus, persisted both before and after slaughter. ARGs conferring resistance to high-priority critically important antimicrobials (HPCIAs), such as fluoroquinolones and third-generation cephalosporins, were frequently detected on carcasses, with qnrS (76.15%, 95%CI 68.02-84.28%) and blaCMY2 (57.8%, 95%CI 48.38-67.22%) being the most prevalent. The slaughtering process emerged as a critical step for ARG dissemination via intestinal bacteria, such as genus Lactobacillus. Additionally, the detection of mcr genes and blaNDM on carcasses but not in the bird gut samples suggests possible anthropogenic contamination. Discussion: These findings highlight that the evisceration process, slaughterhouse environment, and personnel are all contributing factors in ARG spread and underscore the need for enhanced hygiene protocols and reduced gut ARG carriage in domestic birds to mitigate the risk for the consumer.
