With the rapid development of the social economy, human activities have increasingly disrupted water environments, and the continuous input of pollutants poses significant challenges for water environment management. Taking the Xiaoxingkai Lake basin as the study area, this paper develops a social–economic–water environment model based on the system dynamics methodology, incorporating subsystems for population, agriculture, and water pollution. The model focuses on four key indicators of pollution severity, namely, total nitrogen (TN), total phosphorus (TP), chemical oxygen demand (COD), and ammonia nitrogen (NH3-N), and simulates the changes in pollutant loads entering the river under five different scenarios from 2020 to 2030. The results show that agricultural non-point sources are the primary contributors to TN (79.5%) and TP (73.7%), while COD primarily originates from domestic sources (64.2%). NH3-N is mainly influenced by urban domestic activities (44.7%) and agricultural cultivation (41.2%). Under the status quo development scenario, pollutant loads continue to rise, with more pronounced increases under the economic development scenario, thus posing significant sustainability risks. The pollution control enhancement scenario is most effective in controlling pollutants, but it does not promote socio-economic development and has high implementation costs, failing to achieve coordinated socio-economic and environmental development in the region. The dual-reinforcement scenario and moderate-reinforcement scenario achieve a balance between pollution control and economic development, with the moderate-reinforcement scenario being more suitable for long-term regional development. The findings can provide a scientific basis for water resource management and planning in the Xiaoxingkai Lake basin. Full article

To evaluate water pollution status and sustainable development potential in the Huai River Basin, this study focused on the spatiotemporal evolution and influencing factors of the grey water footprint (GWF) across 35 cities in the basin from 2005 to 2020. This study quantifies the GWF from agricultural, industrial, and domestic perspectives and analyzes its spatial disparities by incorporating spatial autocorrelation analysis. The Tapio decoupling model was applied to explore the relationship between pollution and economic growth, and geographic detectors along with the STIRPAT model were utilized to identify driving factors. The results revealed no significant global spatial clustering of GWF in the basin, but a pattern of “high in the east and west, low in the north and south” emerged, with high-value areas concentrated in southern Henan and northern Jiangsu. By 2020, 85.7% of cities achieved strong decoupling, indicating improved coordination between the environment and economy. Key driving factors included primary industry output, crop sown area, and grey water footprint intensity, with a notable interaction between agricultural output and grey water footprint intensity. The quantitative analysis based on the STIRPAT model demonstrated that seven factors, including grey water footprint intensity and total crop sown area, exhibited significant contributions to influencing variations. Ranked by importance, these factors were grey water footprint intensity > total crop sown area > urbanization rate > population size > secondary industry output > primary industry output > industrial wastewater discharge, collectively explaining 90.2% of the variability in GWF. The study provides a robust scientific basis for water pollution control and differentiated management in the river basin and holds significant importance for promoting sustainable development of the basin. This study analyses the potential of using sunflower husks as an energy source by producing bio-pellets and evaluating their combustion process in residential settings. As one of the leading sunflower producers in the European Union, Bulgaria generates significant agricultural residues with high, yet underutilized, energy potential. This study employs a combination of experimental data and numerical modelling aided by ANSYS 2024 R1 to analyse the combustion of sunflower husk pellets in a hot water boiler. The importance of balanced air distribution for achieving optimal combustion, reduced emissions, and enhanced thermal efficiency is emphasized by the results of a comparison of two air supply regimes. It was found that a secondary air-dominated air supply regime results in a more uniform temperature field and a higher degree of oxidation of combustible components. These findings not only confirm the technical feasibility of sunflower husk pellets but also highlight their commercial potential as a sustainable, low-cost energy solution for agricultural enterprises and rural heating providers. The research indicates that there are business-to-business (B2B) market opportunities for biomass producers, boiler manufacturers, and energy distributors who wish to align themselves with EU green energy policies and the growing demand for solutions that support the circular economy. This study contributes to scientific theory by analyzing the models proposed within the framework of circular agriculture to determine how the three dimensions of sustainability—environmental, economic, and social—are integrated into their implementation. A systematic review was conducted on articles published between 2016 and 2025, indexed in the Scopus and Web of Science databases, as well as the relevant grey literature. The methodology employed an extensive content analysis designed to minimize bias, applying filters related to specific knowledge areas to delimitate the search scope and enhance the precision of the research. The findings reveal that the research on circular agriculture models is predominantly grounded in the principles of the circular economy and its associated indicators. Moreover, these models tend to focus on environmental metrics, often neglecting a comprehensive exploration of the social and economic dimensions of sustainable development. It can be concluded that a significant gap persists in the literature regarding the circularity of agriculture and its socio-economic impacts and the role of regulatory frameworks, aspects that future research must address in order to achieve sustainability in circular agriculture. Legumes are among the most important crops globally, serving as a major food source for protein and oil. In tropical regions, the cultivation of legumes has expanded significantly due to the increasing demand for food, plant-based products, and sustainable agriculture practices. However, tropical environments pose unique challenges, including high temperatures, erratic rainfall, soil infertility, and a high incidence of pests and diseases. Indeed, legumes are vulnerable to infections caused by bacteria, fungi, oomycetes, viruses, and nematodes. This review highlights the importance of legumes in tropical farming and discusses major diseases affecting productivity and their impact on the economy, environment, and lives of smallholder legume farmers. We emphasize the use of legume genetic resources and breeding, and biotechnology innovations to foster resistance and address the challenges posed by pathogens in legumes. However, an integrated approach that includes other cultivation techniques (e.g., crop rotation, rational fertilization, deep plowing) remains important for the prevention and control of diseases in legume crops. Finally, we highlight the contributions of plant genetic resources to smallholder resilience and food security. Full article

This paper aims to explore the potentialities and systemic relationships between the ‘regenerative’ process and ‘circular economy’ concept within the conservation and reuse of a built cultural heritage framework through contextualizing the concept of ‘process programming’ of the Preventive and Planned Conservation methodology. As a case study, it depicts a decommissioned industrial agricultural silo in Corbetta—a small historic city with its hinterland located in the protected Southern Milan Regional Agricultural Park. The context includes the industrial agricultural lands of the 20th century, together with historical water infrastructure, farmhouses, and the typical flora of the Lombardy region, all evidences of Corbetta’s rural archaeological values and the sophisticated material culture of its past collective production/economy system—the locus in which the silo was once one of the main productive symbols of Corbetta’s agricultural identity. Within such a complex and challenging context, this paper argues in favor of the constructive role of such a methodology in upholding circular economy principles within the process of conservation and reuse of the silo, highlighting its broader application of the ‘coevolution’ concept from a multidisciplinary long-term perspective. This study aims to evaluate eco-innovative solutions in the fertilizer industry that allow for waste valorization in the context of a resource-efficient circular economy. A comprehensive reuse strategy was developed for low-rank peat and post-cultivation horticultural mineral wool, involving the extraction of valuable humic substances from peat and residual nutrients from used mineral wool, followed by the use of both post-extraction residues to produce organic–mineral substrates. The resulting products/semifinished products were characterized in terms of their composition and properties, which met the requirements necessary to obtain the admission of this type of product to the market in accordance with the Regulation of the Minister for Agriculture and Rural Development of 18 June 2008 on the implementation of certain provisions of the Act on fertilizers and fertilization (Journal of Laws No 119, item 765). Elemental analysis, FTIR spectroscopy, and solid-state CP-MAS 13C NMR spectroscopy suggest that post-extraction peat has a relatively condensed structure with a high C content (47.4%) and a reduced O/C atomic ratio and is rich in alkyl-like matter (63.2%) but devoid of some functional groups in favor of extracted fulvic acids. Therefore, it remains a valuable organic biowaste, which, in combination with post-extraction waste mineral wool in a ratio of 60:40 and possibly the addition of mineral nutrients, allows us to obtain a completely new substrate with a bulk density of 264 g/m3, a salinity of 7.8 g/dm3 and a pH of 5.3, with an appropriate content of heavy metals and with no impurities, meeting the requirements of this type of product. A liquid fertilizer based on an extract containing previously recovered nutrients also meets the criteria in terms of quality and content of impurities and can potentially be used as a fertilizing product suitable for agricultural crops. This study demonstrates a feasible pathway for transforming specific waste streams into valuable agricultural inputs, contributing to environmental protection and sustainable production. The production of a new liquid fertilizer using nutrients recovered from post-cultivation mineral wool and the preparation of an organic–mineral substrate using post-extraction solid residue is a rational strategy for recycling hard-to-biodegrade end-of-life products. Agriculture is one of the most important sectors of the global economy, but it increasingly faces sustainability challenges in meeting rising food demands. The intensive use of mineral fertilizers not only improves yields, but also causes negative environmental impacts such as increasing greenhouse gas emissions, water eutrophication, and soil degradation. To develop more sustainable solutions, the focus is on organic fertilizers, which are produced using waste and biostimulants such as amino acids. The aim of this study was to develop and characterize liquid nitrogen–calcium–magnesium fertilizers produced by decomposing dolomite with nitric acid followed by further processing and to enrich them with a powdered amino acid concentrate Naturamin-WSP and liquid extracts from digestate, a by-product of biogas production. Nutrient-rich extracts were obtained using water and potassium hydroxide solutions, with the latter proving more effective by yielding a higher organic carbon content (4495 ± 0.52 mg/L) and humic substances, which can improve soil structure. The produced fertilizers demonstrated favourable physical properties, including appropriate viscosity and density, as well as low crystallization temperatures (eutectic points from –3 to –34 °C), which are essential for storage and application in cold climates. These properties were achieved by adjusting the content of nitrogenous compounds and bioactive extracts. The results of the study show that liquid fertilizers enriched with organic matter can be an effective and more environmentally friendly alternative to mineral fertilizers, contributing to the development of the circular economy and sustainable agriculture. Agriculture is the backbone of Punjab’s economy, and with much of India’s population dependent on agriculture, the requirement for accurate and timely monitoring of land has become even more crucial. Blending remote sensing with state-of-the-art machine learning algorithms enables the detailed classification of agricultural lands through thematic mapping, which is critical for crop monitoring, land management, and sustainable development. Here, a Hyper-tuned Deep Neural Network (Hy-DNN) model was created and used for land use and land cover (LULC) classification into four classes: agricultural land, vegetation, water bodies, and built-up areas. The technique made use of multispectral data from Sentinel-2 and Landsat-8, processed on the Google Earth Engine (GEE) platform. To measure classification performance, Hy-DNN was contrasted with traditional classifiers—Convolutional Neural Network (CNN), Random Forest (RF), Classification and Regression Tree (CART), Minimum Distance Classifier (MDC), and Naive Bayes (NB)—using performance metrics including producer’s and consumer’s accuracy, Kappa coefficient, and overall accuracy. Hy-DNN performed the best, with overall accuracy being 97.60% using Sentinel-2 and 91.10% using Landsat-8, outperforming all base models. These results further highlight the superiority of the optimised Hy-DNN in agricultural land mapping and its potential use in crop health monitoring, disease diagnosis, and strategic agricultural planning. In the context of the valorization of agri-food by-products, tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) seeds represent a protein-rich matrix containing potential bioactives. The aim of the present work is to develop a biochemical pipeline for (i) achieving high protein recovery from tomato seed, (ii) optimizing the hydrolysis with different proteases, and (iii) characterizing the resulting peptides. This approach was instrumental for obtaining and selecting the most promising peptide mixture to test for antifungal activity. To this purpose, proteins from an alkaline extraction were treated with bromelain, papain, and pancreatin, and the resulting hydrolysates were assessed for their protein/peptide profiles via SDS-PAGE, SEC-HPLC, and RP-HPLC. Bromelain hydrolysate was selected for antifungal tests due to its greater quantity of peptides, in a broader spectrum of molecular weights and polarity/hydrophobicity profiles, and higher DPPH radical scavenging activity, although all hydrolysates exhibited antioxidant properties. In vitro assays demonstrated that the bromelain-digested proteins inhibited the growth of Fusarium graminearum and F. oxysporum f.sp. lycopersici in a dose-dependent manner, with a greater effect at a concentration of 0.1 mg/mL. The findings highlight that the enzymatic hydrolysis of tomato seed protein represents a promising strategy for converting food by-products into bioactive agents with agronomic applications, supporting sustainable biotechnology and circular economy strategies. This study uses life cycle analysis (LCA) to evaluate the environmental impacts of co-firing bituminous coal with agricultural biomass waste, such as coconut and rice husks, emphasising circular economy principles. Seven experimental scenarios with different coal-to-biomass ratios were designed, ranging from pure coal to pure biomass. The results show that Scenario B (100% rice husk) achieved the best overall environmental performance, with the lowest global warming potential (300 kg CO2 equivalent), eutrophication potential (4.742 kg PO4 equivalent), and smog formation potential (0.012 kg C2H4 equivalent). Additionally, Scenario F (15% biomass mix) recorded the lowest acidification potential (57.39 kg SO2 eq), indicating that even partial substitution can yield significant environmental benefits. In contrast, Scenario C (100% coal) exhibited the highest acidification (164.08 kg SO2 eq) and eutrophication (8.82 kg PO4 eq) potential. Overall, the results demonstrate that co-firing biomass waste significantly reduces pollutant emissions compared to burning coal alone. This study highlights the effectiveness of biomass waste co-firing in mitigating environmental impacts, promoting resource recovery, and supporting a sustainable energy transition within a circular economy framework. Morocco is facing a situation of alarming water stress, aggravated by climate change, overexploitation of resources, and unequal distribution of water, placing the country among the most vulnerable to water scarcity in the MENA region. This study aims to investigate the dynamic relationship between economic growth and water stress in Morocco while highlighting the importance of integrated water management and adaptive economic policies to enhance resilience to water scarcity. A mixed methodology, integrating both qualitative and quantitative methods, was adopted to overview the economic–environmental Moroccan context, and to empirically analyze the GDP (gross domestic product) and water stress in Morocco over the period 1975–2021 using an Autoregressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) approach. The empirical analysis is based on annual data sourced from the World Bank and FAO databases for GDP, agricultural value added, renewable internal freshwater resources, and water productivity. The results suggest that water productivity has a significant positive effect on economic growth, while the impacts of agricultural value added and renewable water resources are less significant and vary depending on the model specification. Diagnostic tests confirm the reliability of the ARDL model; however, the presence of outliers in certain years reflects the influence of exogenous shocks, such as severe droughts or policy changes, on the Moroccan economy. The key contribution of this study lies in the fact that it is the first to analyze the intrinsic link between economic growth and the environmental aspect of water in Morocco. According to our findings, it is imperative to continuously improve water productivity and adopt adaptive management, rooted in science and innovation, in order to ensure water security and support the sustainable economic development of Morocco. Our study contributes to a more balanced vision of the UN SDGs thanks to the inclusion of a socio-economic dimension. Here we present a novel empirical approach to assess the socio-economic impacts of dairy development using a new global dataset and non-parametric modelling techniques (local polynomial regressions), with yield as a proxy for sectoral performance. We find that as dairy systems intensify, the number of farm households engaged in production declines, yet household incomes rise. On-farm labour productivity also increases, accompanied by a reduction in employment but higher wages. In dairy processing, employment initially grows, peaks, and then contracts, again with rising wages. The most substantial impact is observed among consumers: an increased milk supply leads to lower prices and improved affordability, expanding the access to dairy products. Additionally, dairy development is associated with greater agricultural value added, an expanding tax base, and the increased formalization of the economy. These findings suggest that dairy development, beyond its environmental footprint, plays a significant and largely positive role in social transformation, yet is having to adapt sustainably while tackling labour force relocation, and that dairy development’s social impacts mimic the general agricultural sector. These results might be of interest for the assessment of policies regarding dairy development. Full article

In recent decades, the rapid expansion of the food processing industry has led to significant losses and waste, with the fruit and vegetable sector among the most affected. According to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), losses in this category can reach up to 60%. Vegetable waste includes edible parts discarded during processing, packaging, distribution, and consumption, often comprising by-products rich in bioactive compounds such as polyphenols, carotenoids, dietary fibers, vitamins, and enzymes. The underutilization of these resources constitutes both an economic drawback and an environmental and ethical concern. Current recovery practices, including their use in animal feed or bioenergy production, contribute to a circular economy but are often limited by high operational costs. In this context, fermentation has emerged as a promising, sustainable approach for converting vegetable by-products into value-added food ingredients. This process improves digestibility, reduces undesirable compounds, and introduces probiotics beneficial to human health. The present review examines how fermentation can improve the nutritional, sensory, and functional properties of plant-based foods. By presenting several case studies, it illustrates how fermentation can effectively valorize vegetable processing by-products, supporting the development of novel, health-promoting food products with improved technological qualities. This paper examines the farming systems and operational structures in the Region of Western Macedonia (RWM), Greece and constructs a typology of farms based on structural, operational, and socio-economic characteristics. Agriculture remains a vital pillar of the regional economy, particularly in the context of RWM’s ongoing transition to a post-lignite development model. Using farm-level data from the 2018 Farm Accountancy Data Network (FADN), Principal Component Analysis (PCA) identified four latent dimensions of farm heterogeneity—income and productivity, asset base, land size, and labour structure. Hierarchical and K-means cluster analysis revealed three distinct farm types: (1) medium-sized, high-efficiency farms with moderate reliance on subsidies (30% of the sample); (2) small-scale, family farms with modest productivity and limited capitalisation (48%); and (3) large, asset-rich farms exhibiting structural inefficiencies and lower output per hectare (22%). These findings highlight structural vulnerabilities, particularly the predominance of undercapitalised smallholdings, and provide a data-driven foundation for Thdesigning differentiated policies that support farm resilience, generational renewal, and sustainable rural development.
