To enable intelligent inspection of underground cable systems, this study presents a gecko-inspired quadruped robot that integrates multi-degree-of-freedom motion with a deep learning-based visual detection system. Inspired by the gecko’s flexible spine and leg structure, the robot exhibits strong adaptability to confined and uneven tunnel environments. The motion system is modeled using the standard Denavit–Hartenberg (D–H) method, with both forward and inverse kinematics derived analytically. A zero-impact foot trajectory is employed to achieve stable gait planning. For defect detection, the robot incorporates a binocular vision module and an enhanced YOLOv8 framework. The key improvements include a lightweight feature fusion structure (SlimNeck), a multidimensional coordinate attention (MCA) mechanism, and a refined MPDIoU loss function, which collectively improve the detection accuracy of subtle defects such as insulation aging, micro-cracks, and surface contamination. A variety of data augmentation techniques—such as brightness adjustment, Gaussian noise, and occlusion simulation—are applied to enhance robustness under complex lighting and environmental conditions. The experimental results validate the effectiveness of the proposed system in both kinematic control and vision-based defect recognition. This work demonstrates the potential of integrating bio-inspired mechanical design with intelligent visual perception to support practical, efficient cable inspection in confined underground environments. To solve the low efficiency of traditional sheet metal measurement, this paper proposes a digital inspection method for sheet metal parts based on 3D point clouds. The 3D point cloud data of sheet metal parts are collected using a 3D laser scanner, and the topological relationship is established by using a K-dimensional tree (KD tree). The pass-through filtering method is adopted to denoise the point cloud data. To preserve the fine features of the parts, an improved voxel grid method is proposed for the downsampling of the point cloud data. Feature points are extracted via the intrinsic shape signatures (ISS) algorithm and described using the fast point feature histograms (FPFH) algorithm. After rough registration with the sample consensus initial alignment (SAC-IA) algorithm, an initial position is provided for fine registration. The improved iterative closest point (ICP) algorithm, used for fine registration, can enhance the registration accuracy and efficiency. The greedy projection triangulation algorithm optimized by moving least squares (MLS) smoothing ensures surface smoothness and geometric accuracy. The reconstructed 3D model is projected onto a 2D plane, and the actual dimensions of the parts are calculated based on the pixel values of the sheet metal parts and the conversion scale. Experimental results show that the measurement error of this inspection system for three sheet metal workpieces ranges from 0.1416 mm to 0.2684 mm, meeting the accuracy requirement of ±0.3 mm. This method provides a reliable digital inspection solution for sheet metal parts. Full article

Agricultural nondestructive testing technology is pivotal in safeguarding food quality assurance, safety monitoring, and supply chain transparency. While conventional optical methods such as near-infrared spectroscopy and hyperspectral imaging demonstrate proficiency in surface composition analysis, their constrained penetration depth and environmental sensitivity limit effectiveness in dynamic agricultural inspections. This review highlights the transformative potential of microwave technologies, systematically examining their operational principles, current implementations, and developmental trajectories for agricultural quality control. Microwave technology leverages dielectric response mechanisms to overcome traditional limitations, such as low-frequency penetration for grain silo moisture testing and high-frequency multi-parameter analysis, enabling simultaneous detection of moisture gradients, density variations, and foreign contaminants. Established applications span moisture quantification in cereal grains, oilseed crops, and plant tissues, while emerging implementations address storage condition monitoring, mycotoxin detection, and adulteration screening. The high-frequency branch of the microwave–millimeter wave systems enhances analytical precision through molecular resonance effects and sub-millimeter spatial resolution, achieving trace-level contaminant identification. Current challenges focus on three areas: excessive absorption of low-frequency microwaves by high-moisture agricultural products, significant path loss of microwave high-frequency signals in complex environments, and the lack of a standardized dielectric database. In the future, it is essential to develop low-cost, highly sensitive, and portable systems based on solid-state microelectronics and metamaterials, and to utilize IoT and 6G communications to enable dynamic monitoring. This review not only consolidates the state-of-the-art but also identifies future innovation pathways, providing a roadmap for scalable deployment of next-generation agricultural NDT systems. Timely and accurate identification of surface damage in hydraulic structures is essential for maintaining structural integrity and ensuring operational safety. Traditional manual inspections are time-consuming, labor-intensive, and prone to subjectivity, especially for large-scale or inaccessible infrastructure. Leveraging advancements in aerial imaging, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) enable efficient acquisition of high-resolution visual data across expansive hydraulic environments. However, existing deep learning (DL) models often lack architectural adaptations for the visual complexities of UAV imagery, including low-texture contrast, noise interference, and irregular crack patterns. To address these challenges, this study proposes a lightweight, robust, and high-precision segmentation framework, called LFPA-EAM-Fast-SCNN, specifically designed for pixel-level damage detection in UAV-captured images of hydraulic concrete surfaces. The developed DL-based model integrates an enhanced Fast-SCNN backbone for efficient feature extraction, a Lightweight Feature Pyramid Attention (LFPA) module for multi-scale context enhancement, and an Edge Attention Module (EAM) for refined boundary localization. The experimental results on a custom UAV-based dataset show that the proposed damage detection method achieves superior performance, with a precision of 0.949, a recall of 0.892, an F1 score of 0.906, and an IoU of 87.92%, outperforming U-Net, Attention U-Net, SegNet, DeepLab v3+, I-ST-UNet, and SegFormer. Additionally, it reaches a real-time inference speed of 56.31 FPS, significantly surpassing other models. The experimental results demonstrate the proposed framework’s strong generalization capability and robustness under varying noise levels and damage scenarios, underscoring its suitability for scalable, automated surface damage assessment in UAV-based remote sensing of civil infrastructure. Corrosion in maritime ballast tanks is a major driver of maintenance costs and operational risks for maritime assets. Inspections are hampered by complex geometries, hazardous conditions, and the limitations of conventional methods, particularly visual assessment, which struggles with subjectivity, accessibility, and early detection, especially under coatings. This paper critically examines these challenges and explores the potential of Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) and Hyperspectral Imaging (HSI) to form the basis of improved inspection approaches. We discuss LiDAR’s utility for accurate 3D mapping and providing a spatial framework and HSI’s potential for objective material identification and surface characterization based on spectral signatures along a wavelength range of 400-1000nm (visible and near infrared). Preliminary findings from laboratory tests are presented, demonstrating the basic feasibility of HSI for differentiating surface conditions (corrosion, coatings, bare metal) and relative coating thickness, alongside LiDAR’s capability for detailed geometric capture. Although these results do not represent a deployable system, they highlight how LiDAR and HSI could address key limitations of current practices and suggest promising directions for future research into integrated sensor-based corrosion assessment strategies. Non-destructive evaluation of reinforced concrete structures is essential for effective maintenance and safety assessments. This study explores the combined use of active microwave thermography and deep learning to detect and localize steel reinforcement within concrete elements. Numerical simulations were developed to model the thermal response of reinforced concrete subjected to microwave excitation, generating synthetic thermal images representing the surface temperature patterns of reinforced concrete, influenced by subsurface steel reinforcement. These images served as training data for a deep neural network designed to identify and localize rebar positions based on thermal patterns. The model was trained exclusively on simulation data and subsequently validated using experimental measurements obtained from large-format concrete slabs incorporating a structured layout of embedded steel reinforcement bars. Surface temperature distributions obtained through infrared imaging were compared with model predictions to evaluate detection accuracy. The results demonstrate that the proposed method can successfully identify the presence and approximate location of internal reinforcement without damaging the concrete surface. This approach introduces a new pathway for contactless, automated inspection using a combination of physical modeling and data-driven analysis. While the current work focuses on rebar detection and localization, the methodology lays the foundation for broader applications in non-destructive testing of concrete infrastructure. Full article

Ensuring the structural safety of steel trusses in escalators is critical for the reliable operation of vertical transportation systems. While manual inspection remains widely used, its dependence on human judgment leads to extended cycle times and variable defect-recognition rates, making it less reliable for identifying subtle surface imperfections. To address these limitations, a novel context-aware, multi-scale deep learning framework based on the YOLOv5 architecture is proposed, which is specifically designed for automated structural defect detection in escalator steel trusses. Firstly, a method called GIES is proposed to synthesize pseudo-multi-channel representations from single-channel grayscale images, which enhances the network’s channel-wise representation and mitigates issues arising from image noise and defocused blur. To further improve detection performance, a context enhancement pipeline is developed, consisting of a local feature module (LFM) for capturing fine-grained surface details and a global context module (GCM) for modeling large-scale structural deformations. In addition, a multi-scale feature fusion module (MSFM) is employed to effectively integrate spatial features across various resolutions, enabling the detection of defects with diverse sizes and complexities. Comprehensive testing on the NEU-DET and GC10-DET datasets reveals that the proposed method achieves 79.8% mAP on NEU-DET and 68.1% mAP on GC10-DET, outperforming the baseline YOLOv5s by 8.0% and 2.7%, respectively. Although challenges remain in identifying extremely fine defects such as crazing, the proposed approach offers improved accuracy while maintaining real-time inference speed. These results indicate the potential of the method for intelligent visual inspection in structural health monitoring and industrial safety applications. Full article

Objectives: Torus mandibularis (TM) is a benign bony exostosis on the lingual surface of the mandible, typically developing from the third decade of life with slow progression; its etiology remains unclear. As TM excision causes no functional or aesthetic disadvantages, its use as autologous bone graft material (e.g., for pre-implant or sinus lift augmentation) has been suggested. In this study, we investigate the prevalence and expression of TM in a southern German population with regard to age and gender. Additionally, we examine whether TM undergoes dynamic changes over time, with the hypothesis that TM may show temporal growth. Material and Methods: A retrospective analysis of CBCT scans from 210 randomly selected patients (105 males, 105 females) was performed. Patients were divided into three age groups (≤40, 41–60, ≥61 years; 70 per group), and TM was measured using OsiriX MD. For the longitudinal study, 146 CBCTs from 73 patients were compared over intervals of 2–9 years. Surface changes were assessed via 3D overlay using GOM Inspect. Results: TM was found in 30.5% of patients, and its prevalence was significantly higher in males (38%) than females (23%), with no age-related differences identified. Most TMs measured <2 mm (n = 51); only five exceeded this size. No dynamic growth was observed over time. Conclusion and Clinical Implications: TM is a common anatomical variant, more frequently detected through 3D imaging than clinical examination. In most cases, size remains minimal (<2 mm), limiting its clinical use as augmentation material in rare individual cases. Full article

To address the challenges of manual inspection dependency, low efficiency, and high costs in evaluating the surface grinding quality of composite materials, this study investigated machine vision-based surface recognition algorithms. We proposed a multi-scale texture fusion analysis algorithm that innovatively integrated luminance analysis with multi-scale texture features through decision-level fusion. Specifically, a modified Rayleigh parameter was developed during luminance analysis to rapidly pre-segment unpolished areas by characterizing surface reflection properties. Furthermore, we enhanced the traditional Otsu algorithm by incorporating global grayscale mean (μ) and standard deviation (σ), overcoming its inherent limitations of exclusive reliance on grayscale histograms and lack of multimodal feature integration. This optimization enables simultaneous detection of specular reflection defects and texture uniformity variations. To improve detection window adaptability across heterogeneous surface regions, we designed a multi-scale texture analysis framework operating at multiple resolutions. Through decision-level fusion of luminance analysis and multi-scale texture evaluation, the proposed algorithm achieved 96% recognition accuracy with >95% reliability, demonstrating robust performance for automated surface grinding quality assessment of composite materials. Detection of surface defects can significantly elongate mechanical service time and mitigate potential risks during safety management. Traditional defect detection methods predominantly rely on manual inspection, which suffers from low efficiency and high costs. Some machine learning algorithms and artificial intelligence models for defect detection, such as Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs), present outstanding performance, but they are often data-dependent and cannot provide guarantees for new test samples. To this end, we construct a detection model by combining Mask R-CNN, selected for its strong baseline performance in pixel-level segmentation, with Conformal Risk Control. The former evaluates the distribution that discriminates defects from all samples based on probability. The detection model is improved by retraining with calibration data that is assumed to be independent and identically distributed (i.i.d) with the test data. The latter constructs a prediction set on which a given guarantee for detection will be obtained. First, we define a loss function for each calibration sample to quantify detection error rates. Subsequently, we derive a statistically rigorous threshold by optimization of error rates and a given guarantee significance as the risk level. With the threshold, defective pixels with high probability in test images are extracted to construct prediction sets. This methodology ensures that the expected error rate on the test set remains strictly bounded by the predefined risk level. Furthermore, our model shows robust and efficient control over the expected test set error rate when calibration-to-test partitioning ratios vary. Full article

Nowadays, a single detection method is insufficient for comprehensively and clearly identifying both surface defects and inner defects in titanium alloys. To address this limitation, this paper proposes a titanium alloy defect detection method based on optical–acoustic image fusion. A detection system was developed to achieve comprehensive and precise inspection of titanium alloys by integrating advanced deep learning-based optical testing technology, reliable C-scan ultrasonic detection technology, and information fusion techniques. Furthermore, the PC software can output interactive fusion results and generate decision-level detection reports. The experimental results demonstrate that the surface defect detection algorithm achieves an accuracy of 99.0%, with a surface defect size measurement resolution of 0.01 mm, an internal defect size measurement resolution of 1 mm, and a positional error within 2 mm. It was found that the proposed method provides a potential solution for the practical application of inspecting surface defects and inner defects in the materials. Full article

This work presents a novel type of soft reconfigurable mobile robot with multimodal locomotion, which is created using a controllable magneto-elastica-reinforced composite elastomer. The rope motor-driven method is employed to modulate magnetics–mechanics coupling effects and enable the magneto-elastica-reinforced elastomer actuator to produce controllable deformations. Furthermore, the 3D-printed magneto-elastica-reinforced elastomer actuators are assembled into several typical robotic patterns: linear configuration, parallel configuration, and triangular configuration. As a proof of concept, a few of the basic locomotive modes are demonstrated including squirming-type crawling at a speed of 1.11 mm/s, crawling with turning functions at a speed of 1.11 mm/s, and omnidirectional crawling at a speed of 1.25 mm/s. Notably, the embedded magnetic balls produce magnetic adhesion on the ferromagnetic surfaces, which enables the soft mobile robot to climb upside-down on ferromagnetic curved surfaces. In the experiment, the inverted ceiling-based inverted crawling speed is 2.17 mm/s, and the inverted freeform surface-based inverted crawling speed is 3.40 mm/s. As indicated by the experimental results, the proposed robot has the advantages of a simple structure, low cost, reconfigurable multimodal motion ability, and so on, and has potential application in the inspection of high-value assets and operations in confined environments. Traditional inspection methods rely heavily on manual labor, making the manufacturing process labor-intensive and error-prone. To overcome these limitations, TEB-YOLO is introduced in this paper, a lightweight and efficient defect detection model based on YOLOv5s. Firstly, EfficientViT replaces the original YOLOv5s backbone, reducing the computational cost while improving feature extraction. Secondly, BiFPN is adopted in place of PANet to enhance multi-scale feature fusion and preserve detailed information. Thirdly, an Efficient Local Attention (ELA) mechanism is embedded in the backbone to strengthen local feature representation. Lastly, the original CIoU loss is replaced with EIoU loss to enhance localization precision. The proposed model achieves a precision of 91.7% with only 10.5 million parameters, marking a 5.4% accuracy improvement and a 22.9% reduction in parameters compared to YOLOv5s. Compared with other mainstream models including YOLOv5n, YOLOv7, YOLOv8n, YOLOv9t, and YOLOv9s, TEB-YOLO achieves precision improvements of 11.8%, 1.66%, 2.0%, 2.8%, and 1.1%, respectively. The experiment results show that TEB-YOLO significantly improves detection precision and model lightweighting, offering a practical and effective solution for real-time bamboo surface defect detection. The use of aerial robots for inspection and maintenance in industrial settings demands high maneuverability, precise control, and reliable measurements. This study explores the development of a fully customized unmanned aerial manipulator (UAM), composed of a tilting drone and an articulated robotic arm, designed to perform non-destructive in-contact inspections of iron structures. The system is intended to operate in complex and potentially hazardous environments, where autonomous execution is supported by shared-control strategies that include human supervision. A parallel force–impedance control framework is implemented to enable smooth and repeatable contact between a sensor for ultrasonic testing (UT) and the inspected surface. During interaction, the arm applies a controlled push to create a vacuum seal, allowing accurate thickness measurements. The control strategy is validated through repeated trials in both indoor and outdoor scenarios, demonstrating consistency and robustness. The paper also addresses the mechanical and control integration of the complex robotic system, highlighting the challenges and solutions in achieving a responsive and reliable aerial platform. The combination of semi-autonomous control and human-in-the-loop operation significantly improves the effectiveness of inspection tasks in hard-to-reach environments, enhancing both human safety and task performance. Barcodes are ubiquitous in manufacturing and logistics, but defects can reduce decoding efficiency and disrupt the supply chain. Existing studies primarily focus on a single barcode type or rely on small-scale datasets, limiting generalizability. We propose Y8-LiBAR Net, a lightweight two-stage framework for multi-type barcode defect detection. In stage 1, a YOLOv8n backbone localizes 1D and 2D barcodes in real time. In stage 2, a dual-branch network integrating ResNet50 and ViT-B/16 via hierarchical attention performs three-class classification on cropped regions of interest (ROIs): intact, defective, and non-barcode. Experiments conducted on the public BarBeR dataset, covering planar/non-planar surfaces, varying illumination, and sensor noise, show that Y8-LiBARNet achieves a detection-stage mAP@0.5 = 0.984 (1D: 0.992; 2D: 0.977) with a peak F1 score of 0.970. Subsequent defect classification attains 0.925 accuracy, 0.925 recall, and a 0.919 F1 score. Compared with single-branch baselines, our framework improves overall accuracy by 1.8–3.4% and enhances defective barcode recall by 8.9%. A Cohen’s kappa of 0.920 indicates strong label consistency and model robustness. These results demonstrate that Y8-LiBARNet delivers high-precision real-time performance, providing a practical solution for industrial barcode quality inspection. Full article
