This paper presents a thermal gas flow sensing system, from surface acoustic wave (SAW) temperature sensor to oscillation circuit and multi-module miniaturization integration. A single-port GaN/Si SAW resonator with single resonant mode and excellent characteristics was fabricated. Combined with an in-house-developed SiGe HBT, a temperature-sensitive high-frequency oscillator was constructed. Under constant temperature control, system-level flow measurement was achieved through dual-oscillation configuration and modular integration. The fabricated SAW device shows a temperature coefficient of frequency (TCF) −28.29 ppm/K and temperature linearity 0.998. The oscillator operates at 1.91 GHz with phase noise of −97.72/−118.62 dBc/Hz at 10/100 kHz offsets. The system demonstrates excellent dynamic response and repeatability, directly measuring 0–50 sccm flows. For higher flows (>50 sccm), a shunt technique extends the test range based on the 0–10 sccm linear region, where response time is <1 s with error <0.9%. Non-contact operation ensures high stability and long lifespan. The sensor shows outstanding performance and broad application prospects in flow measurement. Full article

To solve the problems of large root damage and incomplete seedling blocks (SBs) in rice machine transplanting, this study numerically optimized the root blanket-cutting device for rice blanket seedling cutting and throwing transplanters based on the discrete element method (DEM) and multi-body dynamics (MBD) coupling method. A longitudinal sliding cutter (LSC)–substrate–root interaction model was established. Based on the simulation tests of Center Composite Design and response surface analysis, the sliding angle and cutter shaft speed of the LSCs arranged at the circumferential angles (CAs) of 0°, 30°, and 60° were optimized. The simulation results indicated that the LSC arrangement CA significantly affected the cutting performance, with the optimal configuration achieved at a CA of 60°. Under the optimal parameters (sliding angle of 57°, cutter shaft speed of 65.3 r/min), the average deviation between the simulated and physical tests was less than 11%, and the reliability of the parameters was verified. A seedling needle–substrate–root interaction model was established. The Box–Behnken Design method was applied to conduct simulation tests and response surface optimization, focusing on the picking angle, needle width, and rotary gearbox speed. The simulation results showed that the picking angle was the key influencing factor. Under the optimal parameters (picking angle of 20°, seedling needle width of 15 mm, rotary gearbox speed of 209 r/min), the average deviation between the simulated and physical tests was less than 10%, which met the design requirements. This study provides a new solution for reducing root injury, improving SB integrity, and reducing energy consumption in rice transplanting, and provides theoretical and technical references for optimizing transplanting machinery structure and selecting working parameters. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations were employed to examine how carbon defects, symbiosis, and sulfur influence the wettability of coal pyrite by analyzing H2O adsorption on distinct surface configurations. The comparison results of adsorption energy, Mulliken population, charge density, and electronic state density of water molecules on the surface of pyrite doped with carbon atoms show that the presence of carbon doping reduces the negative value of the adsorption energy of water molecules on the pyrite surface, the C atoms on the pyrite surface form weaker C-H bonds with the H atoms in the water molecules, the Fe-O bond strength weakens, and the thermodynamic trend weakens. And the bond of the pyrite surface with adsorbed carbon changes from an Fe-O bond to an Fe-C-O bond. The adsorption of water molecules on the pyrite surface is weakened, and there is a weaker thermodynamic trend. This is because the adsorption of carbon atoms changes from hydrophilic to nearly hydrophobic. The physical adsorption of sulfur atoms changes the adsorption energy of water molecules on the pyrite surface from negative to positive, and the bond changes from an Fe-O bond to an Fe-S-O bond, indicating that the adsorption intensity of water molecules on the pyrite surface with adsorbed sulfur is weakened, and there is no thermodynamic trend. The pyrite surface with adsorbed sulfur changes from hydrophilic to hydrophobic. Under the same impurity atom doping or adsorption concentration, the influence of sulfur on the adsorption of water molecules on the surface of pyrite is the greatest, followed by the adsorbed carbon, and the weakest is the carbon atom doping. Macroscopically, the overall hydrophobicity of the surface of coal-bearing pyrite covered with sulfur is greater than that of pyrite containing adsorbed carbon and even greater than that of coal-bearing pyrite doped with carbon atoms. Laser shock processing (LSP) is a surface treatment technique used to enhance mechanical properties such as hardness, corrosion resistance, and wear resistance. This study investigates the effects of LSP on a 6061-T6 aluminium alloy using four treatment conditions: nanosecond (ns-LSP), picosecond (ps-LSP), and a combination of nanosecond–picosecond (nsps-LSP) and picosecond–nanosecond (psns-LSP) pulses. Two laser systems were employed: a Q-switched Nd:YAG laser (850 mJ/pulse, 6 ns, 1064 nm, 10 Hz), and an Ekspla Atlantic 355-60 laser (0.110 mJ/pulse, 13 ps, 1064 nm, 1 kHz). All treatments induced compressive residual stresses up to 1 mm in depth. Additionally, improvements in microhardness were observed, particularly at deeper layers in the combined nsps-LSP treatment. Surface roughness was measured and compared. Among all configurations, the nsps-LSP treatment produced the highest compressive residual stresses (−428 MPa) and greater microhardness at depth. These results suggest that the combined nsps-LSP treatment represents a promising approach to enhance the mechanical performance of metallic components. Full article

We consider an axysimmetric cylindrical vessel grown by surface deposition at the inner boundary. The residual stress in the vessel can vary, e.g., depending on the loading history during growth. Can we represent and characterize a stress-free material (namely, reference) configuration for the vessel? Extending an idea initially proposed for surface growth occurring on a fixed boundary, the material configuration is introduced as a two-dimensional manifold immersed in a three-dimensional space. The problem is first formulated in fairly general terms for an incompressible neo-Hookean material in plane strain and then specialized to material configurations represented by ruled surfaces. An illustrative example using geometric and material parameters of carotid arteries shows the characterization of different material configurations based on their three-dimensional slope and computes the corresponding residual stress fields. Finally, such a slope is shown to be in a one to one relationship with the customary measure of residual stress in arteries, i.e., the opening angle in response to a cut. The present work introduces a novel framework for residual stress and shows its applicability in a special setting. Several generalizations and extensions are certainly necessary in the following sections to further test and assess the proposed method. Full article

Metal/composite interfacial interactions are critical to the mechanical performance of Fiber Metal Laminates (FMLs). In this study, the feasibility of successively combining Vacuum-Assisted Resin Transfer Molding (VARTM) and Vacuum Bagging (VB) was investigated, a strategy that has not been reported in the literature for the fabrication of FMLs with 2/1 stacking configuration, using low-cost 3003-H14 aluminum alloy. The substrate was surface modified through mechanical abrasion and chemical etching in an ultrasonic bath with a 0.1 M NaOH solution, varying the exposure time (20, 40, and 60 min). These surfaces were characterized by optical microscopy and atomic force microscopy (AFM), conducting both qualitative and quantitative analyses of the two- and three-dimensional surface features associated with pore morphology. Additionally, their effects on interlaminar strength and Mode I failure modes of the adhesive joint at the metal/composite interface were evaluated. Micrographs of the surface variants revealed a systematic evolution of the metallic microstructure. The T-peel tests demonstrated that the microstructural features influenced the interlaminar behavior. The 40 min treatment exhibited the highest initial peak force (26.4 N) and the highest average peel force (12.4 N), with a predominantly cohesive mixed-mode failure, representing the most favorable configuration for maximizing adhesion at the metal/composite interface. Plant Microbial Fuel Cells (PMFCs) represent a promising technology that uses electroactive bacteria to convert the chemical energy in organic matter into electrical energy. The addition of carbon pellet on electrodes may increase the specific surface area for colonization via bacteria. Use of nutrients such as urea could enhance plant growth. Our study aims to address the following questions: (1) Does carbon pellet layering affect the electrical performance of PMFCs? (2) Does urea treatment of the plants used to feed the PMFCs affect the electrical performance? A new prototype of PMFC has been tested: the plant pot is on the top, drainage water percolates to the tub below, containing the Microbial Fuel Cells (MFCs). To evaluate the best layering setup, two groups of MFCs were constructed: a “Double layer” group (with carbon pellet both on the cathode and on the anode), and a “Single layer” group (with graphite only on the cathode). All MFCs were plant-fed by Spathiphyllum lanceifolium L leachate. After one year, each of the previous two sets has been divided into two subsets: one wetted with percolate from plants fertilized with urea, and the other with percolate from unfertilized plants. Open circuit voltage (mV), short circuit peak current, and short circuit current after 5 s (mA) produced values that were measured on a weekly basis. PMFCs characterized by a “Single layer” group performed better than the “Double layer” group most times, in terms of higher and steadier values for voltage and calculated power. Undesirable results regarding urea treatment suggest the use of less concentrated urea solution. The treatment may provide consistency but appears to limit voltage and peak values, particularly in the “Double layer” configuration. Full article

Urban microclimates depend on the city’s features, geographical position, climatic conditions, solar irradiance, and building materials. Many urban elements delay heat dissipation, giving rise to the urban heat island (UHI) phenomenon. (1) In Mexico City, UHIs occur mainly during the dry season (April–May) and likely increase in energy consumption in buildings. (2) Computational fluid dynamics models such as Ansys Fluent provide detailed flow field data related to atmospheric parameters and building surface fluctuations. With the data generated, a mitigation technique is proposed that displaces heat away from buildings, using air turbulence to actively cool them by examining the performance of w. (3) An experimental analysis was carried out to simulate thermal and aerodynamic scenarios throughout the day around three modules of different sizes, configurations, and albedo values. All modules showed a decrease in the difference between the building temperature and the air temperature, becoming colder with differences from −0.46 to −0.76 °C, while w presented values from −1.3 to 0.59 m·s−1, indicating some turbulence. (4) Therefore, it is necessary to consider mitigating UHIs in urban planning through efficient use of the properties and construction materials of each building and their arrangement in each block. Background/Objective: Understanding the training effect in high-level running is important for performance optimization and injury prevention. This includes awareness of how different running surface types (e.g., hard versus soft) may modify biomechanics. Recent studies have demonstrated that deep learning algorithms, such as convolutional neural networks (CNNs), can accurately classify human activity collected via body-worn sensors. To date, no study has assessed optimal signal type, sensor location, and model architecture to classify running surfaces. This study aimed to determine which combination of signal type, sensor location, and CNN architecture would yield the highest accuracy in classifying grass and asphalt surfaces using inertial measurement unit (IMU) sensors. Methods: Running data were collected from forty participants (27.4 years + 7.8 SD, 10.5 ± 7.3 SD years of running) with a full-body IMU system (head, sternum, pelvis, upper legs, lower legs, feet, and arms) on grass and asphalt outdoor surfaces. Performance (accuracy) for signal type (acceleration and angular velocity), sensor configuration (full body, lower body, pelvis, and feet), and CNN model architecture was tested for this specific task. Moreover, the effect of preprocessing steps (separating into running cycles and amplitude normalization) and two different data splitting protocols (leave-n-subject-out and subject-dependent split) was evaluated. Results: In general, acceleration signals improved classification results compared to angular velocity (3.8%). Moreover, the foot sensor configuration had the best performance-to-number of sensor ratio (95.5% accuracy). Finally, separating trials into gait cycles and not normalizing the raw signals improved accuracy by approximately 28%. Conclusion: This analysis sheds light on the important parameters to consider when developing machine learning classifiers in the human activity recognition field. A surface classification tool could provide useful quantitative feedback to athletes and coaches in terms of running technique effort on varied terrain surfaces, improve training personalization, prevent injuries, and improve performance. Unmanned surface vehicles (USVs) rely on multi-sensor perception, such as radar, LiDAR, GPS, and vision, to ensure safe and efficient navigation in complex maritime environments. Traditional ant colony optimization (ACO) for path planning, however, suffers from premature convergence, slow adaptation, and poor smoothness in cluttered waters, while the dynamic window approach (DWA) without global guidance can become trapped in local obstacle configurations. This paper presents a sensor-oriented hybrid method that couples an improved ACO for global route planning with an enhanced DWA for local, real-time obstacle avoidance. In the global stage, the ACO state–transition rule integrates path length, obstacle clearance, and trajectory smoothness heuristics, while a cosine-annealed schedule adaptively balances exploration and exploitation. Pheromone updating combines local and global mechanisms under bounded limits, with a stagnation detector to restore diversity. In the local stage, the DWA cost function is redesigned under USV kinematics to integrate velocity adaptability, trajectory smoothness, and goal-deviation, using obstacle data that would typically originate from onboard sensors. Simulation studies, where obstacle maps emulate sensor-detected environments, show that the proposed method achieves shorter paths, faster convergence, smoother trajectories, larger safety margins, and higher success rates against dynamic obstacles compared with standalone ACO or DWA. These results demonstrate the method’s potential for sensor-based, real-time USV navigation and collision avoidance in complex maritime scenarios. Full article

Microwave-driven quantum logic gates in trapped-ion systems offer a scalable and laser-free alternative to optical control, with the potential for robust integration into surface-electrode trap architectures. In this work, we present a systematic design guideline for planar ion traps optimized for fast two-qubit microwave gates using chip-integrated conductors. We investigate two electrode configurations, one employing a single microwave line for driving σ transitions, and another with two symmetric lines for π transitions. Through finite-element simulations, we analyze ion height, magnetic field gradients, heating effects, and gate durations under realistic cryogenic conditions. Our results show that both configurations can achieve two-qubit gate times in the order of 10 μs for Be+9 and Ca+40 ions. Full article

With the rapid advancement of energy storage technologies, there is a growing demand for affordable, efficient, and environmentally benign battery systems. Sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) present a promising alternative to lithium-ion systems due to sodium’s high abundance and similar electrochemical properties. Particular attention is given to developing NASICON -sodium (Na) super ionic conductor, type cathode materials, especially Na3V2(PO4)3, which exhibits high thermal and structural stability. This study focuses on the sol–gel synthesis of Na3V2(PO4)3 using citric acid and ethylene glycol, as well as investigating the effect of annealing temperature (400–1000 °C) on its structural and electrochemical properties. Phase composition, morphology, textural characteristics, and electrochemical performance were systematically analyzed. Above 700 °C, a highly crystalline NASICON phase free of secondary impurities was formed, as confirmed by X-ray diffraction (XRD). Microstructural evolution revealed a transition from a loose amorphous structure to a dense granular morphology, accompanied by changes in specific surface area and porosity. The highest surface area (67.40 m2/g) was achieved at 700 °C, while increasing the temperature to 1000 °C caused pore collapse due to sintering. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) confirmed the predominant presence of V3+ ions and the formation of V4+ at the highest temperature. The optimal balance of high crystallinity, uniform elemental distribution, and stable texture was achieved at 900 °C. Electrochemical testing in a Na/NVP half-cell configuration delivered an initial capacity of 70 mAh/g, which decayed to 55 mAh/g by the 100th cycle, attributed to solid-electrolyte interphase (SEI) formation and irreversible Na+ trapping. These results demonstrate that the proposed approach yields high-quality Na3V2(PO4)3 cathode materials with promising potential for sodium-ion battery applications. Full article

High-rise building facades offer an alternative site for installing photovoltaic panels, which are traditionally placed on rooftops. The unique spatial configuration of high-rise buildings, characterized by a small footprint area relative to their height, supports the application of vertical facades for this purpose. Photovoltaic panels installed in these areas not only generate electricity but also enhance the aesthetic dimension of the urban landscape. The proposed methodology uses the EnergyPlus software to simulate the electricity generation of photovoltaic panels mounted on the walls of high-rise buildings in the city of Kragujevac, Serbia. A technical, economic, and environmental analysis was conducted for two scenarios: (1) photovoltaic panels installed on two facade areas with the highest solar potential, and (2) photovoltaic panels installed on all four available facade areas. In Scenario 1, the annual reduction in electricity consumption, annual cost savings in electricity consumption, and investment payback period range from 13 to 38%, 11 to 31%, and 8.4 to 10.6 years, respectively. In Scenario 2, these values range from 23 to 58%, 18 to 47%, and 10.9 to 12.9 years, respectively. The results indicate that southeast and southwest facades consistently achieve higher levels of electricity generation, underscoring the importance of prioritizing high-performing orientations rather than maximizing overall surface coverage. The methodology is particularly efficient for analyzing the solar potential of numerous buildings with comparable shapes, which is a characteristic commonly found in Eastern European architecture from the late 20th century. The study demonstrates the applicability of the proposed methodology as a practical and adaptable tool for assessing early-stage solar potential and providing decision support in urban energy planning. The approach addresses the identified methodological gap by offering a low-cost, flexible framework for assessing solar potential across diverse urban contexts and building typologies, while significantly simplifying the modeling process. When a joined-wing configuration is applied to the design of solar-powered UAVs, the increasing span amplifies aeroelastic effects, while structure complexity poses greater challenges to computational effectiveness during the conceptual design phase. This paper focuses on a large-span joined-wing solar-powered UAV (LJS-UAV) engineering prototype. The structural finite element model of the whole system is constructed by developing the ‘Simplified beam-shell model’ (SBSM) and verified by a structural mode test. A numerical simulation approach is employed to comprehensively analyse and summarise the aeroelastic characteristics of the LJS-UAV from the perspectives of static aeroelasticity, flutter, and gust response. The mode test identified 30 global modes with natural frequencies below 10 Hz, indicating that the LJS-UAV possesses an exceptionally flexible structure and exhibits highly complex aeroelastic characteristics. The simulation results reveal that the structural elasticity induces significant variations in aerodynamic forces, moments, and derivatives during flight, which cannot be neglected. The longitudinal trim strategies can considerably influence the aeroelastic boundary of the LJS-UAV. Utilising the front-wing control surfaces for trim is beneficial in improving structural performance and expanding the flight envelope. Full article

With the surge in urban logistics demand, traditional surface transportation faces challenges, such as traffic congestion and environmental pollution. Leveraging metro systems in metropolitan areas for both passenger commuting and underground logistics presents a promising solution. The metro-based underground logistics system (M-ULS), characterized by extensive coverage and independent right-of-way, has emerged as a potential approach for optimizing urban freight transport. However, existing studies primarily focus on single-line scenarios, lacking in-depth analyses of multi-tier network coordination and dynamic demand responsiveness. This study proposes an optimization framework based on mixed-integer programming and an improved ICSA to address three key challenges in metro freight network planning: balancing passenger and freight demand, optimizing multi-tier node layout, and enhancing computational efficiency for large-scale problem solving. By integrating E-TOPSIS for demand assessment and an adaptive mutation mechanism based on a normal distribution, the solution space is reduced from five to three dimensions, significantly improving algorithm convergence and global search capability. Using the Nanjing metro network as a case study, this research compares the optimization performance of independent line and transshipment-enabled network scenarios. The results indicate that the networked scenario (daily cost: CNY 1.743 million) outperforms the independent line scenario (daily cost: CNY 1.960 million) in terms of freight volume (3.214 million parcels/day) and road traffic alleviation rate (89.19%). However, it also requires a more complex node configuration. This study provides both theoretical and empirical support for planning high-density urban underground logistics systems, demonstrating the potential of multimodal transport networks and intelligent optimization algorithms.
