Turbidity currents pose significant threats to offshore seabed infrastructures, including subsea hydrocarbon production facilities and submarine communication cables. These powerful underwater flows can damage pipelines, potentially causing hydrocarbon spills that endanger local communities, the environment, and negatively impact energy production infrastructures. Therefore, a comprehensive understanding of the spatio-temporal development and destructive force of turbidity currents is essential. While numerical computation of 3D flow, sediment transport, and substrate exchange is possible, field-scale simulations are computationally intensive. In this study, we develop a simplified morphodynamic approach to model the flow properties of channelized turbidity currents and the associated trends of sediment accretion and erosion. This model is applied to the Baco–Malaylay submarine system to investigate the dynamics of a significant turbidity current event that impacted a submarine pipeline offshore the Philippines. The modeling results align with available seabed assessments and observed erosion trends of the protective rock berm. Our simplified modeling approach shows good agreement with simulations from a fully 3D numerical model, demonstrating its effectiveness in providing valuable insights while reducing computational demands. In an effort to restrict further increases in climate change, governments and companies are exploring ways to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. In this context, the oil industry, which contributes to indirect GHG emissions, is seeking ways to develop solutions to this issue. One such approach focuses on the connection of offshore oil production platforms to the onshore power grid via high-voltage direct current (HVDC), enabling a total or partial reduction in the number of local generators, which are generally powered by gas turbines. Therefore, this work aims to determine the technical feasibility, based on transient and dynamic stability analyses, of electrifying a system composed of six floating production storage and offloading (FPSO) units connected to a hub, which is powered by the onshore grid through submarine cables using HVDC technology. The analysis includes significant contingencies that could lead the system to undesirable operating conditions, allowing for the identification of appropriate remedial control actions. The analysis, based on real data and parameters, was carried out using PSCAD software. The results show that the modeled system is technically viable and could be adopted by oil companies. In addition to aligning with global warming mitigation goals, the proposal includes a complex system modeling approach, with the aim of enabling further study. Full article

Power output and economic cost are two critical factors influencing the layout of tidal stream turbine arrays. To identify the optimal configuration, this study establishes a two-objective optimization framework that simultaneously considers these factors. Both the spatial location and yaw angle of each turbine are optimized to enhance overall power output, while the total length of submarine cables, which is used to transmit electricity from the turbines to the onshore power station, is adopted as the metric for economic cost. The Huludao water area is selected as the study domain. A 12-turbine array is examined under varying weight coefficients to investigate the trade-off between maximizing power output and minimizing economic cost. The optimization results show that submarine cable length decreases linearly as its economic weight coefficient increases, while the array’s power output exhibits a stepwise decline. This indicates that, with carefully chosen weight coefficients, economic costs can be significantly reduced without a proportional sacrifice in power output. Furthermore, increasing the number of turbines connected by a single cable not only enhances power output but also reduces total cable length, thereby improving the overall profitability of the optimized array layout. The status of an optic–electric composite high-voltage submarine cable (referred to as submarine cable) can be monitored based on optical fiber-distributed sensing technology, and at the same time, no additional sensor is needed in the monitoring system. Currently, this technology is widely used in submarine cable monitoring systems. To estimate the temperatures of conductor and XLPE (cross-linked polyethylene) insulation of the submarine cable based on the ambient temperature and optical fiber temperature, the thermoelectric coupling field model of the 110 kV single-core submarine cable is established and validated. The thermoelectric coupling field models of the submarine cable with different values of ambient temperature and ampacity are built, and the influence of ambient temperature and ampacity on the temperatures of conductor, insulation and optical fiber is investigated. Furthermore, the relationship between the temperatures of the conductor and insulation and the ambient temperature and optical fiber temperature is obtained. Then, estimation formulas for temperatures of conductor and insulation of submarine cable according to ambient temperature and optical fiber temperature are obtained and preliminarily validated. This work lays the foundation for condition evaluation of the submarine cable insulation, life expectancy and maximum allowable ampacity estimation. Full article

The safe and efficient design of dynamic submarine cables is critical for the reliability of floating offshore wind turbines, yet traditional time-domain simulation-based optimization approaches are computationally intensive and time consuming. To address this challenge, this study proposes a closed-loop optimization framework that couples machine learning with intelligent optimization algorithms for a dynamic cable configuration design. A high-fidelity surrogate model based on a backpropagation (BP) neural network was trained to accurately predict cable dynamic responses. Three optimization algorithms—Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO), Ivy Optimization (IVY), and Tornado Optimization (TOC)—were evaluated for their effectiveness in optimizing the arrangement of buoyancy and weight blocks. The TOC algorithm exhibited superior accuracy and convergence stability. Optimization results show an 18.3% reduction in maximum curvature while maintaining allowable effective tension limits. This approach significantly enhances optimization efficiency and provides a viable strategy for the intelligent design of dynamic cable systems. Future work will incorporate platform motions induced by wind turbine operation and explore multi-objective optimization schemes to further improve cable performance. Full article

Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS) technology presents an innovative method for marine monitoring by adapting existing underwater optical fiber networks. This paper examines the use of DAS with the Istituto Nazionale di Fisica Nucleare–Laboratori Nazionali del Sud (INFN-LNS) optical fiber infrastructure in the Gulf of Catania, Eastern Sicily, Italy. This region in the Western Ionian Sea provides a unique natural laboratory due to its tectonic and volcanic activity, proximity to Mount Etna, diverse marine ecosystems and significant human influence through maritime traffic. By connecting a 28 km long optical cable to an Alcatel Submarine Network OptoDAS interrogator, DAS successfully detected a range of natural and human–made signals, including a magnitude 3.5 ML earthquake recorded on 14 November 2023, and acoustic signatures from vessel noise. The earthquake–induced Power Spectral Density (PSD) increased to up to 30 dB above background levels in the 1–15 Hz frequency range, while vessel noise exhibited PSD peaks between 30 and 60 Hz with increases of up to 5 dB. These observations offered a detailed spatial and temporal resolution for monitoring seismic wave propagation and vessel acoustic noise. The results underscore DAS’s capability as a robust tool for the continuous monitoring of the rich underwater environments in the Gulf of Catania. Full article

Underground and submarine power cables are subjected to mechanical stress during installation and operation, which degrades the cable insulation and reduces the reliability of power transmission. Therefore, tests that can evaluate the mechanical properties of power cable insulation are very important. The purpose of this paper is to introduce an improved sampling method for the test sample, the peeling, for mechanical testing of power cable insulation and to evaluate the reliability of the method. The influence of the sampling method of the test sample on the mechanical property values was analyzed. The tensile strength and elongation of XLPE (cross-linked polyethylene) and PP (polypropylene) insulation prepared by the slice method and the peeling method were measured, and the surface of the test samples according to the sampling methods was photographed by SEM. The results show that the mechanical property of the cable insulation increased by more than 10% when the improved peeling method was used, and the precision of the peeling method was relatively better. The SEM analysis showed that the surface of the sliced test sample was rougher than the peeled test sample and was physically damaged. Therefore, the high reliability of the peeling method for mechanical testing of cable insulators was demonstrated. Full article

To protect submarine power cables from damage caused by anchoring and fishing, submarine power cables in shallow water areas are buried to a certain depth through a cable laying machine. However, limited attention has been paid to studying the stress behavior of submarine power cables while considering the effects of burial depth. In this research, static and dynamic analyses are carried out using three-dimensional numerical models performed by the OrcaFlex v11.0 to investigate the effects of burial depths on cable tension during the cable installation under various conditions. Numerical simulation results show that the peak tension of the submarine power cable increases linearly with the increase in burial depth. In addition, the burial depth can also change the tension state at the endpoint of the submarine power cable. The endpoint of the cable is in a compressed state when h < 2 m and the cable turns into a tensile state when h ≥ 2 m. Finally, genetic programming (GP) is used to analyze numerical simulation results to propose a prediction model that can be used to estimate the peak tension of the submarine power cable during cable installation under various burial depths in shallow sea areas. It should be noted that the proposed GP model is based on the analyses of numerical results; therefore, the GP model is open for further improvements as more experimental data become available. To mitigate accidents in submarine cable construction within the rapidly expanding offshore wind power sector, this study employed the analytic hierarchy process (AHP) and risk matrix method (LS) to assess the risks associated with identified factors. Based on project research and expert consultations, five primary and twenty-two secondary risk factors were identified. AHP was utilized to rank the primary risk factors by severity, probability, and detection difficulty, with the highest risk being the environmental impact, followed by third-party destruction and worker error. LS was applied to rank the secondary risk factors by likelihood and severity, with the highest risks being complex submarine topography, low underwater visibility, and fishing operations. The study proposes risk reduction measures based on these evaluations and offers methodological guidance for improving construction safety in similar enterprises. Full article

Greece is expanding its energy grid system with submarine power and fiber optic cables between the mainland and the Aegean Sea islands. Additionally, pipelines have been installed to support natural gas facilities, and sites are being demarcated for the development of offshore wind parks. The above developments have necessitated extensive geotechnical surveying of the seabed; however, the survey data cannot be accessed for academic inspection or for desktop studies of future developments. This is further hindered by the limited geotechnical information in the Aegean and Ionian Seas. This review examines the existing information concerning the geotechnical behavior of the surficial sedimentary layers, including certain challenges associated with geotechnical sampling and CPTu interpretation. Certain prospects are discussed regarding marine geotechnical research in Greece, with examples from other European countries. The marine geotechnical data in Greece include geotechnical analyses of sediments cores and slope stability estimations, which are commonly associated with the seismic profiling of unstable slope areas. Underlying mechanisms of slope failure have mainly been attributed to the interbedded presence of weak layers (e.g., sapropels, tephra and underconsolidated sediments), the presence of gas and the cyclic loading from earthquake activity. Due to the limited geotechnical information, geological studies have contributed considerably to describing the distributions of gravity-induced events and lithostratigraphy. Within this context, a geological/geotechnical database is suggested where data can be collated and utilized for future studies. Full article

This study addresses the limitations of traditional methods used to analyze factors influencing submarine cable burial depth and emphasizes the underutilization of cable construction data. To overcome these limitations, a machine learning-based model is proposed. The model utilizes cable construction data from the East China Sea to predict the weight of factors influencing cable burial depth. Pearson correlation analysis and principal component analysis are initially employed to eliminate feature correlations. The random forest method is then used to determine the weights of factors, followed by the construction of an optimized backpropagation (BP) neural network using the ISOA-BP hybrid optimization algorithm. The model’s performance is compared with other machine learning algorithms, including support vector regression, decision tree, gradient decision tree, and the BP network before optimization. The results show that the random forest method effectively quantifies the impact of each factor, with water depth, cable length, deviation, geographic coordinates, and cable laying tension as the significant factors. The constructed ISOA-BP model achieves higher prediction accuracy than traditional algorithms, demonstrating its potential for quality control in cable laying construction and data-driven prediction of cable burial depth. This research provides valuable theoretical and practical implications in the field. Full article

In the context of power system decarbonization, the demand-side strategy for increasing the share of renewable energy is studied for two constrained energy systems. This strategy, which is currently widely suggested in policies on the energy transition, would impact consumer behavior. Despite the importance of studying the latter, the focus here is on decisions regarding the type, location, and timeframe of implementing the related measures. As such, solutions must be assessed in terms of cost and feasibility, technological learning, and by considering geographical and environmental constraints. Based on techno-economic optimization, in this paper we analyze the evolution of the power system and elaborate plausible long-term trajectories in the energy systems of two European islands. The case studies, Procida in Italy and Hinnøya in Norway, are both electrically connected to the mainland by submarine cables and present issues in their power systems, which are here understood as relatively isolated power systems. Renewable energy integration is encouraged by legislative measures in Italy. Although not modeled here, they serve as a backbone for the assumptions of increasing these investments. For Procida, rooftop photovoltaics (PV) coupled with energy storage are integrated in the residential, public, and tertiary sectors. A price-based strategy is also applied reflecting the Italian electricity tariff structure. At a certain price difference between peak and off-peak, the electricity supply mix changes, favoring storage technologies and hence decreasing imports by up to 10% during peak times in the year 2050. In Norway, renewable energy resources are abundant. The analysis for Hinnøya showcases possible cross-sectoral flexibilities through electrification, leading to decarbonization. By fine-tuning electric vehicle charging tactics and leveraging Norway’s electricity pricing model, excess electricity demand peaks can be averted. The conclusions of this double-prospective study provide a comparative analysis that presents the lessons learnt and makes replicability recommendations for other territories. Full article

With the development of the social economy and the improvement of electrification, cables and wires play an important role in people’s lives and industrial development. Meanwhile, the large-scale laying of cables has also made them a fire hazard that cannot be ignored in land construction such as residential buildings, utility tunnels, nuclear power plants, refineries, marine systems such as submarines and ships, and airborne systems such as spacecrafts and aircrafts. In this work, studies on fire the characteristics of cables and wires over the last decades have been reviewed. Based on different experimental forms and objects (laboratory wires and commercial cables), this paper summarizes the theories of the fire dynamics in wire combustion, including the models of ignition and flame propagation, the criteria for blowing off and quenching, and the critical conditions for dripping behavior. The effects of materials, layouts, and environments on wire combustion phenomena such as airflow, ambient pressure, oxygen, gravity, and orientation angle have been discussed in detail according to the theories of heat transfer and combustion. In addition, test standards and studies on the fire behavior and release of toxic gases of commercial cables have also been fully described. Through the summary of the above content, it is expected to build a preliminary theoretical framework and future research directions for researchers in the field of cable fires. Full article

Offshore wind power stands out as a promising renewable energy source, offering substantial potential for achieving low carbon emissions and enhancing energy security. Despite its potential, the expansion of offshore wind power faces considerable constraints in offshore power transmission. Hydrogen production derived from offshore wind power emerges as an efficient solution to overcome these limitations and effectively transport energy. This study systematically devises diverse hydrogen energy supply chains tailored to the demands of the transportation and chemical industries, meticulously assessing the levelized cost of hydrogen (LCOH). Our findings reveal that the most cost-efficient means of transporting hydrogen to the mainland is through pipelines, particularly when the baseline distance is 50 km and the baseline electricity price is 0.05 USD/kWh. Notably, delivering hydrogen directly to the port via pipelines for chemical industries proves considerably more economical than distributing it to hydrogen refueling stations, with a minimal cost of 3.6 USD/kg. Additionally, we assessed the levelized cost of hydrogen (LCOH) for supply chains that transmit electricity to ports via submarine cables before hydrogen production and subsequent distribution to chemical plants. In comparison to offshore hydrogen production routes, these routes exhibit higher costs and reduced competitiveness. Finally, a sensitivity analysis was undertaken to scrutinize the impact of delivery distance and electricity prices on LCOH. The outcomes underscore the acute sensitivity of LCOH to power prices, highlighting the potential for substantial reductions in hydrogen prices through concerted efforts to lower electricity costs.
