Losses from floods and the wide range of impacts have been at the forefront of hazard-triggered disasters in China. Affected by large-scale human activities and the environmental evolution, China’s defense flood situation is undergoing significant changes. This paper constructs a comprehensive flood disaster risk assessment model through systematic analysis of four key factors—hazard (H), exposure (E), susceptibility/sensitivity (S), and disaster prevention capabilities (C)—and establishes an evaluation index system. Using the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP), we determined indicator weights and quantified flood risk via the following formula R = H × E × V × C. After we applied this model to 16 towns in coastal Zhejiang Province, the results reveal three distinct risk tiers: low (R < 0.04), medium (0.04 ≤ R ≤ 0.1), and high (R > 0.1). High-risk areas (e.g., Longxi and Shitang towns) are primarily constrained by natural hazards and socioeconomic vulnerability, while low-risk towns benefit from a robust disaster mitigation capacity. Risk typology analysis further classifies towns into natural, social–structural, capacity-driven, or mixed profiles, providing granular insights for targeted flood management. The spatial risk distribution offers a scientific basis for optimizing flood control planning and resource allocation in the district. Full article

Enterprise architecture (EA) provides a strategic foundation for aligning business processes, IT infrastructure, and organizational strategy, enabling firms to navigate uncertainty and complexity. In developing economies, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) face significant challenges in maintaining financial resilience and sustainable growth amidst frequent disruptions. This study investigates how EA-driven change events affect SME financial performance by activating three key adaptive mechanisms: improvisational capability, flexible IT systems, and organizational culture. A novel classification of EA change triggers is proposed to guide adaptive responses. Using survey data from 291 Pakistani SMEs collected during the COVID-19 crisis, the study employs structural equation modeling (SEM) to validate the conceptual model. The results indicate that improvisational capability and flexible IT systems significantly enhance financial performance, while the mediating role of organizational culture is statistically insignificant. This study contributes to EA and sustainability literature by integrating a typology of EA triggers with adaptive capabilities theory and testing their effects in a real-world crisis context. Urban environments are increasingly challenged by rapid urbanisation and climate change, demanding strategic responses that are both adaptable and sensitive to local context. Typological classification offers a structured approach to understanding diverse urban contexts, enabling targeted interventions that support climate neutrality and livability. While global pressures are shared, their impacts differ widely across cities, highlighting the need for context-aware urban analytics to guide effective transformation. This paper presents a methodological perspective on a computational framework and workflow based on open source data, designed to support the classification and optimisation of urban environments across different urban contexts; it explores the framework’s potential and limitations, grounded in a review of relevant literature and available datasets. We propose a workflow encompassing four main steps: (1) classifying urban environments based on quantifiable characteristics, (2) identifying key performance indicators (KPIs) differentiated by urban typology, (3) proposing interventions to optimise urban environments according to underlying typological classification, and (4) validating the proposed solutions in simulated environments. The framework prioritises open data sources provided by public authorities as well as open science and citizen science initiatives. A more streamlined integration of data is proposed, facilitating both the classification and assessment of urban environments aligned with their primary typological designation. Full article

This article analyzes the role of parish churches, erected after 1945, in shaping the urban and social structures of the Szczecin housing estates, examining their importance and impact on the surrounding space. This research focused on three groups of churches as spatial landmarks and symbols of young heritage, analyzing their location, form, and social significance. The objective of the present research was to determine how contemporary churches perform a dominant function in space and how they affect the social identity of residents, to determine whether these churches can be considered objects of young cultural heritage. This work used field research, spatial and photographic analysis, and typological classification. Six selected churches were subjected to comparative analysis. The results indicate a clear impact of sacred architecture on public spaces and the need to formulate new monument protection strategies for contemporary sacred objects as elements of urban cultural heritage. This article fits into the current discussions on the creation of criteria for evaluating post-war architecture and its place in the structure of a developing city. We noticed the lack of tools and directions for the protection of young heritage, and suggested directions for the sustainable protection of contemporary buildings. Full article

The seismic risk assessment of large building stocks is crucial for informed asset management in earthquake-prone regions, providing decision-support for retrofit intervention planning. Many existing methodologies focus on a single structural typology or asset class (e.g., ordinary buildings or industrial facilities), thus limiting their applicability to mixed portfolios. This study proposes a comprehensive and adaptable methodology for the seismic assessment of diverse building stocks—a cross-typology approach encompassing masonry, reinforced concrete (r.c.), precast r.c., and steel structures. The approach integrates deficiency-based qualitative evaluations with simplified mechanical models tailored for each building class. Where validated methodologies were unavailable, new assessment tools were developed. The proposed framework was applied to an industrial-oriented building stock comprising 79 structural units at regional scale, demonstrating its capability to identify priority structures for retrofitting interventions. By overcoming the constraints of typology- or asset-specific approaches, this methodology enables a more comprehensive and scalable assessment. This ultimately contributes to effective risk mitigation planning and seismic resilience enhancing. Full article

This paper investigates the extent to which ecological design principles are integrated into contemporary park design and whether they represent a new landscape design paradigm. It also presents a theoretical literature review and a selection of key ecological principles that form the basis for the subsequent analysis. Based on comparative analysis of 224 realized projects (2015–225) sourced from the Landezine online platform, the research examines the frequency, typology and spatial impact of declared ecological design principles. Although relatively few principles are explicitly mentioned in individual projects, their spatial impact is constantly evident, ranging from minimal to paradigmatic. The frequently declared principles include habitat preservation, stormwater management and reuse of structures on site, with new priorities such as community involvement, innovation, and resilience are also emerging. The design composition analysis confirms that ecological design principles are embedded across both brownfield and non-brownfield contexts, reflecting their widespread application. These findings suggest that EDPs have become essential to shaping resilient and adaptive landscapes. However, further advancement of ecological design depends on deeper integration of theory and practice, interdisciplinary collaboration and context-sensitive application. Full article

Biophilic design has emerged as a multidimensional response to growing concerns about health, well-being, and ecological balance in the built environment. Despite its rising prominence, research on the topic remains fragmented across building typologies, user groups, and geographic contexts. This study presents a comprehensive review of the biophilic design literature, employing a hybrid methodology combining structured content analysis and bibliometric mapping. All peer-reviewed studies indexed in the Web of Science and Scopus were manually screened for architectural relevance and systematically coded. A total of 435 studies were analysed to identify key trends, thematic patterns, and research gaps in the biophilic design discipline. This review categorises the literature by methodological strategies, building typologies, spatial scales, population groups, and specific biophilic design parameters. It also examines geographic and cultural dimensions, including climate responsiveness, heritage buildings, policy frameworks, theory development, pedagogy, and COVID-19-related research. The findings show a strong emphasis on institutional contexts, particularly workplaces, schools, and healthcare, and a reliance on perception-based methods such as surveys and experiments. In contrast, advanced tools like artificial intelligence, simulation, and VR are notably underused. Few studies engage with neuroarchitecture or neuroscience-informed approaches, despite growing recognition of how spatial design can influence cognitive and emotional responses. Experimental and biometric methods remain scarce among the few relevant contributions, revealing a missed opportunity to connect biophilic strategies with empirical evidence. Regarding biophilic parameters, greenery, daylight, and sensory experience are the most studied parameters, while psychological parameters remain underexplored. Cultural and climate-specific considerations appear in relatively few studies, and many fail to define a user group or building typology. This review highlights the need for more inclusive, context-responsive, and methodologically diverse research. By bridging macro-scale bibliometric patterns with fine-grained thematic insights, this study provides a replicable review model and valuable reference for advancing biophilic design as an evidence-based, adaptable, and human-centred approach to sustainable architecture. Advanced three-dimensional extended reality (XR) technologies are highly suitable for cultural heritage research and education. XR tools enable the creation of realistic virtual or augmented reality applications for curating and disseminating information about cultural artifacts and sites. Developing XR applications for cultural heritage requires interdisciplinary collaboration involving strong teamwork and soft skills to manage user requirements, system specifications, and design cycles. Given the diverse end-users, achieving high precision, accuracy, and efficiency in information management and user experience is crucial. Human–computer interaction (HCI) design and evaluation methods are essential for ensuring usability and return on investment. This article presents ten case studies of cultural heritage software projects, illustrating the interdisciplinary work between computer science and HCI design. Students from institutions such as the State University of New York (USA), Glasgow School of Art (UK), University of Granada (Spain), University of Málaga (Spain), Duy Tan University (Vietnam), Imperial College London (UK), Research University Institute of Communication & Computer Systems (Greece), Technical University of Košice (Slovakia), and Indiana University (USA) contributed to creating, assessing, and improving the usability of these diverse cultural heritage applications. The results include a structured typology of CH XR application scenarios, detailed insights into design and evaluation practices across ten international use cases, and a development framework that supports interdisciplinary collaboration and stakeholder integration in phygital cultural heritage projects. Robustness of Steel Moment-Resisting Frames Under Column Loss Scenarios with and without Prior Seismic Damage

This study investigates the robustness of steel moment-resisting frames (MRFs) under column loss scenarios, both in undamaged and post-seismic conditions. In this context, robustness is defined as the ability of a damaged structure to prevent progressive collapse following an earthquake. A parametric investigation was conducted on 48 three-dimensional MRF configurations, varying key design and geometric parameters such as the number of storeys, span length, and design load combinations. Nonlinear dynamic analyses were performed using realistic ground motions and column loss scenarios defined by UFC guidelines. The effects of pre-existing seismic damage, façade claddings, and joint typologies were explicitly accounted for using validated component-based modelling approaches. The results indicate that long-span, low-rise frames are more vulnerable to collapse initiation due to higher plastic demands, while higher-rise frames benefit from load redistribution through their increased redundancy. In detail, long-span, low-rise frames experience roughly ten times higher displacement demands than their short-span counterparts, and post-seismic damage has limited influence, yielding rotational demands within 5–10% of the undamaged case. The Reserve Displacement Ductility (RDR) ranges from approximately 6.3 for low-rise, long-span frames to 21.5 for high-rise frames, highlighting the significant role of geometry in post-seismic robustness. The post-seismic damage was found to have a limited influence on the dynamic displacement and rotational demands, suggesting that the robustness of steel MRFs after a moderate earthquake is largely comparable to that of the initially undamaged structure. These findings support the development of more accurate design and retrofit provisions for seismic and multi-hazard scenarios. Full article

This research presents a multi-scale framework designed for assessing the energy performance and climate vulnerability of three existing residential buildings in a small Central Italian municipality. By integrating dynamic energy simulations with high-resolution climate projections, the study investigated how the selected building typologies responded to changing environmental conditions. Validation against Energy Performance Certificates (EPCs) confirmed the framework’s robustness in accurately capturing energy consumption patterns and assessing retrofit potential. The results revealed a general reduction in heating demand accompanied by an increase in cooling requirements under future climate scenarios, with notable differences across building types. The reinforced concrete building showed greater sensitivity to rising temperatures, particularly in cooling demand, likely due to its lower thermal inertia. In contrast, masonry buildings achieved more substantial energy savings following retrofit interventions, reflecting their initially poorer thermal performance and outdated systems. Retrofit measures yielded significant energy reductions, especially in older masonry structures, with savings reaching up to 44%, underscoring the necessity of customised retrofit strategies. The validated methodology supports future wider applicability in regional energy planning and aligns with integrated initiatives aimed at balancing climate adaptation and cultural heritage preservation. The Laogulou Yashu Archaeological Site in Chongqing represented a significant discovery in the study of medieval Chinese urban heritage. Among its remains, the 13th century terraced building F1 stood out for its scale and function as a governmental qiaolou (gate tower). This study reconstructed the original architectural design of F1 using an archaeotectural approach that integrated archaeological evidence and Song Dynasty architectural treatises, especially Yingzao Fashi, and comparatively analysed the building with contemporaneous structures and visual references. By applying the statistical estimation of historical measurement units (chi), typological analysis based on modular standards (cai) and the interpretive modelling of structural elements, the research offered a historically grounded and dimensionally coherent reconstruction. The study not only enhanced the understanding of Southern Song governmental architecture but also contributed a replicable methodological framework for reconstructing complex historical buildings from fragmentary archaeological data. This study provides a comprehensive philological analysis of ten Old Uyghur manuscript fragments of the Saddharmapuṇḍarīka-sūtra (Lotus Sutra) in the Berlin Turfan Collection, while systematically examining all extant Old Uyghur Lotus Sutra manuscripts to establish a complete corpus for comparative analysis. By collating this complete corpus with Kumārajīva’s Chinese translation, this research demonstrates a typology of Old Uyghur Lotus Sutra fragments. It identifies at least two distinct translation lineages: (1) early translations (pre-10th century) exhibiting lexical and structural divergences indicative of Sogdian mediation or hybrid source traditions, and (2) late translations (11th–14th centuries) directly derived from the Chinese version, characterized by syntactic fidelity and a standardized terminology. Through comparative textual analysis, orthographic scrutiny, and terminological cross-referencing, this paper aims to reconstruct the historical trajectory of the Lotus Sutra’s transmission. In addition, it discusses some facts indicating linguistic and cultural contact between the Sogdians and the progressive alignment of Uyghur Buddhist texts with Chinese Buddhist traditions. The coexistence of three sub-ethnic architectural traditions, Cantonese, Hakka and Teochew, renders Guangdong Province a typical locality for cultural geographical study of Chinese building heritage. Focusing on timber structures as the key indicator of Chinese historical architecture, this paper conducts a typological–chronological study on Cantonese palatial-type (Diantang Shi) timber construction, a previously under-studied building type, aiming to establish for the first time its detailed evolutionary process. Through the interdisciplinary methodology of building archaeology, archaeological theory of material cultural evolution as well as archaeological methods of dating analysis are integrated, achieving more precision in architectural examination both geographically and historically. As a result, 20 cases are dated in the Ming and Qing dynasties with 12 structural elements rapidly evolving, substantiating periodization of Cantonese palatial-type timber construction into three evolutionary phases. Periodization further facilitates the identification of two dramatic structural variations in the second phase, revealing Hakka–Cantonese cultural transmission and political intervention as two different socio-cultural mechanisms underpinning architectural transformations. The typological–chronological study is thus transferred into socio-cultural discourse, presenting a new methodological paradigm for architectural heritage study to incorporate the diachronic scope into the static synchronic approach of cultural geographical scholarship. The possibility of collecting new archaeological elements useful in reconstructing the dynamics of population, production and commercial activities in the Bronze Age at the edge of the central-southern Venice Lagoon was provided between 2023 and 2024 thanks to an intervention of rescue archaeology planned during some water restoration works in the Giare–Mira area. Three small excavations revealed, approximately one meter below the current surface and covered by alluvial sediments, a rather complex palimpsest dated to the late Recent and the early Final Bronze Age. Three large circular pits containing exclusively purified grey/blue clay and very rare inclusions of vegetable fibres, and many large, fired clay vessels’ bases, walls and rims clustered in concentrated assemblages and random deposits point to potential on-site production. Two pyro-technological structures, one characterised by a sub-circular combustion chamber and a long inlet channel/praefurnium, and the second one with a sub-rectangular shape with arched niches along its southern side, complete the exceptional context here discovered. To analyse the relationship between the site and the natural sedimentary succession and to evaluate the possible extension of this site, three electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) and low-frequency electromagnetic (FDEM) measurements were collected. Several manual core drillings associated with remote sensing integrated the geophysical data in the analysis of the geomorphological evolution of this area, clearly related to different phases of fluvial activity, in a framework of continuous relative sea level rise. The typology and chronology of the archaeological structures and materials, currently undergoing further analyses, support the interpretation of the site as a late Recent/early Final Bronze Age productive site. Geophysical and geomorphological data provide information on the palaeoenvironmental setting, suggesting that the site was located on a fine-grained, stable alluvial plain at a distance of a few kilometres from the lagoon shore to the south-east and the course of the Brenta River to the north. The archaeological site was buried by fine-grained floodplain deposits attributed to the Brenta River. The good preservation of the archaeological structures buried by fluvial sediments suggests that the site was abandoned soon before sedimentation started. Full article

This paper presents the Integrated Energy Community Performance Index (IECPI), a novel multi-criteria evaluation framework designed to assess the systemic performance of energy communities (ECs) across environmental, technological, social, and economic/institutional dimensions. Although ECs are increasingly recognized as pivotal actors in the decentralized energy transition, the absence of integrated assessment tools continues to hinder comparability, strategic planning, and long-term monitoring. The IECPI addresses this critical gap by structuring performance evaluation around nine normalized indicators, with their respective weights empirically derived from an influence matrix calibrated using interdependencies identified in 60 documented case studies. The IECPI integrates both objective and subjective metrics, capturing measurable outcomes alongside governance structures and contextual factors. The results reveal significant disparities in the performance of energy communities, allowing for the identification of five strategic typologies: Technologically Driven, Environmentally Oriented, Socially Embedded, Balanced Performance, and Structurally Fragile. The IECPI facilitates benchmarking, targeted policymaking, and cross-case learning while aligning with international frameworks such as SDG 7, EMAS, and principles of inclusive governance. As a scalable and transferable model, it provides a robust foundation for evidence-based planning, the evaluation of community resilience, and sustainability-oriented decision-making within distributed energy systems.
