Background/Objectives: Impairment in self-awareness (ISA) is one of the common consequences of an acquired brain injury (ABI) and is associated with anosodiaphoria. Collectively, these co-occurring neuropsychological disorders pose significant obstacles in the neurorehabilitation of moderate-to-severe ABI patients. Individuals who recover from ISA may present with anxiety and/or depression as adaptive reactions to the ABI, along with related functional disabilities. The present study investigated whether the level of metacognitive self-awareness (SA) is associated with the presence of anxiety and depression, apathy, or anosodiaphoria in patients with moderate-to-severe ABI. It aimed also at investigating the possible relationship between the severity of disability and both psycho-emotional diseases and the presence of PTSD symptoms in patients with high metacognitive SA. Methods: Sixty patients with moderate-to-severe ABI and different levels of metacognitive SA completed a series of questionnaires, which assessed their self-reported metacognitive SA, anosodiaphoria, anxiety and depression, apathy, and PTSD symptoms. Results: Low-metacognitive-SA patients showed lower levels of anxiety and depression and higher anosodiaphoria than high-metacognitive-SA patients. Patients with high metacognitive SA and high levels of disability showed significant higher states of anxiety and PTSD symptoms than patients with high metacognitive SA and low levels of disability. Conclusions: The neurorehabilitation of individuals with moderate to severe ABI should address, in particular, the complex interaction between ISA and anxiety and depression in patients during the rehabilitation process. Most research on domestic dog (Canis familiaris) behavior has focused on pets with restricted movement. However, free-ranging dogs exist in diverse cultural contexts globally, and their interactions with humans are less understood. Tourists can facilitate unrestricted dog movement into wilderness areas, where they may negatively impact wildlife. This study investigated which stimuli—namely, voice, touch, or food—along with inherent factors (age, sex, sociability) motivate free-ranging dogs to follow a human stranger. We measured the distance (up to 600 m) of 129 free-ranging owned and stray dogs from three villages in southern Chile as they followed an experimenter who presented them one of the above stimuli or none (control). To evaluate the effect of dog sociability (i.e., positive versus stress-related or passive behaviors), we performed a 30 s socialization test (standing near the dog without interacting) before presenting a 10 s stimulus twice. We also tracked whether the dog was in the company of other dogs. Each focus dog was video-recorded and tested up to three times over five days. Generalized linear mixed-effects models revealed that the food stimulus significantly influenced dogs’ motivation to follow a stranger, as well as a high proportion of sociable behaviors directed towards humans and the company of other dogs present during the experiment. Juveniles tended to follow a stranger more than adults or seniors, but no effects were found for the dog’s sex, whether an owner was present, the repetition of trials, the location where the study was performed, or for individuals as a random variable. This research highlights that sociability as an inherent factor shapes dog–stranger interactions in free-ranging dogs when food is given. In the context of wildlife conservation, we recommend that managers promote awareness among local communities and tourists to avoid feeding dogs, especially in the context of outdoor activities close to wilderness. In early May 2025, extreme wildfires swept across Manitoba, Canada, fueled by unseasonably warm temperatures, prolonged drought, and stressed vegetation. We explore how multi-source satellite indicators—such as anomalies in snow cover, precipitation, temperature, vegetation indices, and soil moisture in April–May—jointly signal landscape preconditioning for fire, highlighting the potential of these compound anomalies to inform fire risk awareness in boreal regions. Results indicate that rainfall deficits and diminished snowpack significantly reduced soil moisture, which subsequently decreased vegetative greenness and created a flammable environment prior to ignition. This concept captures how multiple moderate anomalies, when occurring simultaneously, can converge to create high-impact fire conditions that would not be flagged by individual thresholds alone. These findings underscore the importance of integrating climate and biosphere anomalies into wildfire risk monitoring to enhance preparedness in boreal regions under accelerating climate change. In response to the stress commonly experienced by young people in high-pressure daily environments, a music-based stress-relief interactive system was developed by integrating music-assisted care with emotion-sensing technology. The design principles of the system were established through a literature review on stress, music listening, emotion detection, and interactive devices. A prototype was created accordingly and refined through interviews with four experts and eleven users participating in a preliminary experiment. The system is grounded in a four-stage guided imagery and music framework, along with a static activity model focused on relaxation-based stress management. Emotion detection was achieved using a wearable EEG device (NeuroSky’s MindWave Mobile device) and a two-dimensional emotion model, and the emotional states were translated into visual representations using seasonal and weather metaphors. A formal experiment involving 52 users was conducted. The system was evaluated, and its effectiveness confirmed, through user interviews and questionnaire surveys, with statistical analysis conducted using SPSS 26 and AMOS 23. The findings reveal that: (1) integrating emotion sensing with music listening creates a novel and engaging interactive experience; (2) emotional states can be effectively visualized using nature-inspired metaphors, enhancing user immersion and understanding; and (3) the combination of music listening, guided imagery, and real-time emotional feedback successfully promotes emotional relaxation and increases self-awareness. Objectives: This study assessed the effectiveness of a cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT)-based fine dust education program, grounded in the Health Belief Model (HBM), on elementary students’ fine dust knowledge, related behaviors, and mental health (depression, anxiety, stress, sleep quality). Methods: From September to November 2024, 95 students (grades 4–6) living near a coal-fired power plant in midwestern South Korea were assigned to either an intervention group (n = 44) or a control group (n = 51). The intervention group completed a three-session CBT-based education program; the control group received stress management education. Assessments were conducted at weeks 1, 2, 4, and 8 using standardized mental health and behavior scales (PHQ: Patient Health Questionnaire, GAD: Generalized Anxiety Disorder Assessment, PSS: Perceived Stress Scale, ISI: Insomnia Severity Index). Results: A chi-square test was conducted to compare pre- and post-test changes in knowledge and behavior related to PM2.5. The intervention group showed significant improvements in seven fine dust-related knowledge and behavior items (e.g., PM2.5 awareness rose from 33.3% to 75.0%; p < 0.05). The control group showed limited gains. Regarding mental health, based on a mixed-design ANCOVA, anxiety scores significantly declined over time in the intervention group, with group and interaction effects also significant (p < 0.05). Depression scores showed time effects, but group and interaction effects were not significant. No significant changes were observed for stress, sleep, or group × PM2.5 interactions. Conclusions: The CBT-based education program effectively enhanced fine dust knowledge, health behaviors, and reduced anxiety among students. It presents a promising, evidence-based strategy to promote environmental and mental health in school-aged children. Full article

This study aims to provide a comprehensive overview of psychological distress among medical students in Spain, a growing concern given the high prevalence rates of anxiety, depression, and burnout reported across multiple medical schools and universities. To assess the scope and key characteristics of this phenomenon, a thorough literature search was conducted in the PubMed, ProQuest, and Web of Science (WoS) databases. Studies published between 2010 and 2024 in peer-reviewed scientific journals, written in English or Spanish, and specifically focused on medical students enrolled in Spanish universities were considered for inclusion. A total of 14 studies were analysed. The findings indicate that psychological distress often emerges early in medical training and tends to intensify as students progress academically. Female medical students are consistently more affected, as most of the studies reviewed indicate that they exhibit higher levels of depressive symptoms, trait anxiety, and perceived stress. Some research also suggests greater levels of burnout among female students compared to their male peers. Key contributing factors include academic overload and dissatisfaction, sleep deprivation, and the use of maladaptive coping strategies. Although awareness of the issue is increasing, available evidence suggests that institutional responses remain limited, and that only a small number of universities have implemented structured mental health programmes. Overall, the results underscore the urgent need for institutional reforms in Spanish medical education to safeguard students’ mental wellbeing. Key priorities include revising curricula, implementing structured emotional support programmes, and ensuring accessible services—requiring coordinated, long-term commitment across academic, healthcare, and policy sectors. Future research should explore longitudinal trends and the effectiveness of targeted interventions. Full article

This article highlights the importance of the discourse on sound media for the development of so-called “cosmic music” in Germany in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Already the slogan of the Ohr record label “Macht das Ohr auf” (Open up your ears) testifies to the awareness of Rolf-Ulrich Kaiser, the founder of the label, and the bands gathered around him about the impact of media on everyday practices and the reflection on the physiological effect of sound. In particular, this article focuses on the figure of Kaiser and his Buch der neuen Pop-Musik (1969), where the author stresses the emancipatory potential of popular music starting from the considerations put forward by H. Marcuse, T. W. Adorno and M. McLuhan. On the basis of these suggestions, Kaiser envisages the possibility of a ‘functional transformation’ of sound media, placing himself in a long German tradition of reflections on the relationship between man and technology, in which it is possible to identify a line that proposes a progressive and socialist use of technical reproduction apparatuses (Benjamin, Brecht, Enzensberger) and another line that questions the connection between media and mystical experience (Mann, Hesse). In this sense, this paper explores the intellectual and literary context of the media anthropology on which the sound aesthetics of German cosmic music was founded. Full article

In recent decades, information technology has grown. Computers have become a daily activity, facilitating access to information, faster communication and faster work. If used responsibly, it has many advantages. Objectives: To explore the potential link between prolonged use of computer input devices—such as keyboards and mice—and the development of compressive neuropathies, including carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) and cubital tunnel syndrome (CuTS), in individuals whose daily routines are heavily reliant on computer-based activities. Methods: A comprehensive review of the literature was undertaken to assess the correlation between the use of computer input devices and the incidence of compressive neuropathies in the upper limbs, with particular attention to repetitive strain, ergonomic posture deviations, and personal risk factors. Results: Current evidence indicates a potential association between prolonged computer use and the development of upper limb compressive neuropathies; however, a definitive consensus within the scientific literature remains elusive. Repetitive movements and non-neutral postures appear to be significant contributing factors, particularly among individuals with predisposing risk factors. Despite increasing awareness of this issue, standardized, evidence-based clinical guidelines for the evaluation and management of work-related nerve disorders remain lacking. Conclusions: While the relationship between computer use and compressive neuropathies remains debated, healthcare professionals should be aware of the risks, particularly in individuals exposed to repetitive strain and ergonomic stress. Further research and the development of clinical guidelines are needed to better understand and manage these work-related conditions. Full article

Navigating Risk in Crypto Markets: Connectedness and Strategic Allocation

This study examined the dynamic interconnectedness and portfolio implications within the cryptocurrency ecosystem, focusing on five representative digital assets across the core functional categories: Layer 1 cryptocurrencies (Bitcoin (BTC) and Ethereum (ETH)), decentralized finance (Uniswap (UNI)), stablecoins (Dai), and crypto infrastructure tokens (Maker (MKR)). Using the Extended Joint Connectedness Approach within a Time-Varying Parameter VAR framework, the analysis captured time-varying spillovers of return shocks and revealed a heterogeneous structure of systemic roles. Stablecoins consistently acted as net absorbers of shocks, reinforcing their defensive profile, while governance tokens, such as MKR, emerged as persistent net transmitters of systemic risk. Foundational assets like BTC and ETH predominantly absorbed shocks, contrary to their perceived dominance. These systemic roles were further translated into portfolio design, where connectedness-aware strategies, particularly the Minimum Connectedness Portfolio, demonstrated superior performance relative to traditional variance-based allocations, delivering enhanced risk-adjusted returns and resilience during stress periods. By linking return-based systemic interdependencies with practical asset allocation, the study offers a unified framework for understanding and managing crypto network risk. The findings carry practical relevance for portfolio managers, algorithmic strategy developers, and policymakers concerned with financial stability in digital asset markets. Full article

Despite recent advances in the treatment of obesity, lifestyle medicine remains foundational to the treatment of individuals with obesity, regardless of the modality chosen by the patient with the guidance of the clinician they are working with, including in conjunction with, as appropriate, anti-obesity medications and metabolic surgery. Lifestyle medicine involves the use of diet, exercise, sleep, stress, and other lifestyle modalities in the treatment of disease. Clinicians and health systems should, after a patient-centered discussion with the patient, do their best to ensure access to lifestyle treatments. Gold standard guidelines recommend intensive, multicomponent lifestyle change programs for obesity treatments with evidence-based diet and exercise counseling and established, theoretically driven behavior change components. Clinicians treating obesity should be aware of their own biases, make efforts to reduce stigmatizing experiences in their practice, and address weight stigma in their treatment plans as needed. A variety of dietary patterns can be used to support patients with obesity, and clinicians should make evidence-based but patient-centered recommendations that aim to maximize adherence. Diet and exercise can play an important role in reducing the side effects of treatment and optimizing outcomes in weight loss, attenuating the effects of metabolic adaptation, and weight maintenance. Exercise should be increased gradually to reduce injury with a goal of 200–300 min (approximately 3.3–5 h) of moderate to vigorous intensity exercise per week to maximize weight maintenance effects with exercise prescriptions customized to patients risks. A variety of practice models can be leveraged along with the use of an interdisciplinary team to provide lifestyle medicine care for those with obesity. Full article

In the context of wastewater treatment plant optimization, this study presents a novel approach based on a virtual sensor architecture designed to estimate total nitrogen levels in effluent and assess plant performance using an operational indicator. The core of the system is an intelligent agent that integrates real-time sensor data with machine learning models to infer nitrogen dynamics and anticipate deviations from optimal operating conditions. Central to this strategy is the operational nitrogen indicator (ONI), a weighted aggregation of four sub-indicators: legal compliance (Nactual%), the nitrogen dynamic trend (Tnitr%), removal efficiency (Enitr%), and microbial balance (NP%), each of which captures a critical dimension of the nitrogen removal process. The ONI enables the early detection of stress conditions and facilitates adaptive decision-making by quantifying operational status in terms of regulatory thresholds, biological requirements, and dynamic stability. This approach contributes to a shift toward smart wastewater treatment plants, where virtual sensing, autonomous control, and throttling-aware diagnostics converge to improve process efficiency, reduce operational risk, and promote environmental compliance. Special police units like Austria’s EKO Cobra are uniquely trained to manage high-risk operations, including terrorism, amok situations, and hostage crises. This study explores how group dynamics contribute to operational safety and resilience, emphasising the interconnection between risk perception, training, and operational practices. Interviews with current and former EKO Cobra members reveal key risk factors, including overconfidence, insufficient training, inadequate equipment, and the challenges of high-stakes scenarios. Using a structured yet thematically flexible interview analysis approach, the study adopts group dynamics theory as its framework and applies a semi-inductive, semi-deductive qualitative methodology. It examines risk categorisation in ad hoc operations, as well as the interplay between risk perception and training, proposing actionable strategies to enhance safety and preparedness through tailored training programmes. The findings underscore the transformative impact of intensive scenario-based and high-stress training, which enhances situational awareness and reinforces team-based responses through cohesion and effective communication. Group dynamics, including cohesion and effective communication, play a pivotal role in mitigating risks and ensuring operational success. Importantly, this research advocates for continuous, adaptive, and specialised training to address evolving challenges. By linking theoretical frameworks with practical and actionable insights, this study proposes a holistic training approach that promotes both resilience and long-term sustainability in police operations. These findings offer valuable guidance to elite units like EKO Cobra for broader policy frameworks by providing insights that make police operations safer and more effective and resilient. This study investigates the systemic tail dependence among biodiversity, clean energy, and financial transition assets using a novel partial correlation-based network approach. Analyzing eleven indices from 2019 to 2025, we capture dynamic connectedness across normal and extreme market conditions. Empirical findings indicate that clean energy assets form a central hub of connectedness, while biodiversity-linked instruments increasingly influence systemic behavior under stress. Events such as the COVID-19 vaccine rollout, the Russia–Ukraine war, and El Niño intensify these dynamics. Compared to the traditional Generalized Forecast Error Variance Decomposition (GFEVD) framework, our approach better detects short-term shocks, offering actionable insights for climate-aware investment and risk management. As mental health disorders in the U.S. increase at an alarming rate, schools are looking for prevention and mitigation interventions for their students. This study reports teachers’ perspectives on the effectiveness of a school program situated at the intersection of self-care and nature-based interventions at a vocational technical high school. Eight classes received between one and four “Intro to Well-Being” sessions, designed to take students outside and develop self-awareness, sense of connection, and reduce stress. Upon the conclusion of the program, classroom teachers were interviewed to identify the perceptions of the sessions and their impact on student and classroom outcomes. Teachers described the sessions as beneficial to students’ expression of emotions, mindfulness skills, personal/social connections, and classroom atmosphere. Teachers also reflected on challenges and provided recommendations for future implementation. Outdoor-based self-care programs, administered at schools, may be a promising program model to support the social and emotional health of students. Full article

The integration of high-penetration renewable energy sources (RESs) into transmission networks introduces profound uncertainty that challenges traditional infrastructure planning approaches. Existing transmission expansion planning (TEP) models either rely on static scenario sets or over-conservative worst-case assumptions, failing to capture the operational stress triggered by rare but structurally impactful renewable behaviors. This paper proposes a novel bi-level optimization framework for transmission planning under adversarial uncertainty, coupling a distributionally robust upper-level investment model with a lower-level operational response embedded with physics and market constraints. The uncertainty space was not exogenously fixed, but instead dynamically generated through a physics-informed spatiotemporal generative adversarial network (PI-ST-GAN), which synthesizes high-risk renewable and load scenarios designed to maximally challenge the system’s resilience. The generator was co-trained using a composite stress index—combining expected energy not served, loss-of-load probability, and marginal congestion cost—ensuring that each scenario reflects both physical plausibility and operational extremity. The resulting bi-level model was reformulated using strong duality, and it was decomposed into a tractable mixed-integer structure with embedded adversarial learning loops. The proposed framework was validated on a modified IEEE 118-bus system with high wind and solar penetration. Results demonstrate that the GAN-enhanced planner consistently outperforms deterministic and stochastic baselines, reducing renewable curtailment by up to 48.7% and load shedding by 62.4% under worst-case realization. Moreover, the stress investment frontier exhibits clear convexity, enabling planners to identify cost-efficient resilience strategies. Spatial congestion maps and scenario risk-density plots further illustrate the ability of adversarial learning to reveal latent structural bottlenecks not captured by conventional methods. This work offers a new methodological paradigm, in which optimization and generative AI co-evolve to produce robust, data-aware, and stress-responsive transmission infrastructure designs.
