Ship monitoring using Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) data faces significant challenges in detecting small vessels due to low spatial resolution and speckle noise. While ESRGAN (Enhanced Super-Resolution Generative Adversarial Network) has shown promise for image super-resolution, it struggles with SAR imagery characteristics. This study proposes SA/SU-ESRGAN, which extends the SU-ESRGAN framework by incorporating a spatial attention mechanism loss function. SU-ESRGAN introduced semantic structural loss to accurately preserve ship shapes and contours; our enhancement adds spatial attention to focus reconstruction efforts on ship regions while suppressing background noise. Experimental results demonstrate that SA/SU-ESRGAN successfully detects small vessels that remain undetectable by SU-ESRGAN, achieving improved detection capabilities with a PSNR of approximately 26 dB (SSIM is around 0.5) and enhanced visual clarity in ship boundaries. The spatial attention mechanism effectively reduces noise influence, producing clearer super-resolution results suitable for maritime surveillance applications. Based on the HRSID dataset, a representative dataset for evaluating ship detection performance using SAR data, we evaluated ship detection performance using images in which the spatial resolution of the SAR data was artificially degraded using a smoothing filter. We found that with a 4 × 4 filter, all eight ships were detected without any problems, but with an 8 × 8 filter, only three of the eight ships were detected. Maritime surveillance is critical for ensuring the safety and continuity of sea logistics, port operations, and coastal activities in the presence of anomalies such as unlawful maritime activities, security-related incidents, and anomalous events (e.g., tsunamis or aggressive marine wildlife). Recent advances in unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs)/drones and computer vision enable automated, wide-area monitoring that can reduce dependence on continuous human observation and mitigate the limitations of traditional methods in complex maritime environments (e.g., waves, ship clutter, and marine animal movement). This study proposes a hybrid anomaly detection and tracking pipeline that integrates YOLOv12, as the primary object detector, with two auxiliary modules: (i) motion assistance for tracking moving anomalies and (ii) stillness (appearance) assistance for tracking slow-moving or stationary anomalies. The system is trained and evaluated on a custom maritime dataset captured using a DJI Mini 2 drone operating around a port area near Bayshore MRT Station (TE29), Singapore. Windsurfers are used as proxy (dummy) anomalies because real anomaly footage is restricted for security reasons. On the held-out test set, the trained model achieves over 90% on Precision, Recall, and mAP50 across all classes. When deployed on real maritime video sequences, the pipeline attains a mean Precision of 92.89% (SD 13.31), a mean Recall of 90.44% (SD 15.24), and a mean Accuracy of 98.50% (SD 2.00%), indicating strong potential for real-world maritime anomaly detection. This proof of concept provides a basis for future deployment and retraining on genuine anomaly footage obtained from relevant authorities to further enhance operational readiness for maritime and coastal security. Given the central importance of maritime logistics to global trade, accurate and efficient vessel motion forecasting is essential for strengthening supply chain resilience and improving operational efficiency. However, traditional physical and statistical models often fail to effectively capture the multivariate, noisy, and strongly coupled nature of maritime dynamics. In this manuscript, we adapt the DSformer architecture for ship motion forecasting, leveraging its dual sampling and dual-attention design to address the multi-scale and cross-variable dependencies inherent in maritime data. Across three real-world datasets, the adapted DSformer reduces prediction error by 23% and training time by 70% compared with 13 state-of-the-art (SOTA) baselines. Moreover, we identify a consistent relationship between sampling strategies and sea states, where dense sampling performs best under stable conditions, whereas moderately sparse sampling with multi-head attention improves robustness under turbulent environments. These results apply the algorithm’s new capabilities to the daily management of maritime logistics. By adapting the architecture to real-world operational settings and optimizing its key parameters, the approach enables efficient, real-time vessel forecasting and decision support across global supply chains. Oriented object detection constitutes a fundamental yet challenging task in Artificial Intelligence of Things (AIoT)-enabled maritime surveillance, where real-time processing of dense visual streams is imperative. However, existing detectors suffer from three critical limitations: sequential attention mechanisms that fail to capture coupled spatial–channel dependencies, unconstrained deformable convolutions that yield unstable predictions for elongated vessels, and center-based distance metrics that ignore angular alignment in sample assignment. To address these challenges, we propose JAOSD (Joint Attention-based Oriented Ship Detection), an anchor-free framework incorporating three novel components: (1) a joint attention module that processes spatial and channel branches in parallel with coupled fusion, (2) an adaptive geometric convolution with two-stage offset refinement and spatial consistency regularization, and (3) an orientation-aware Adaptive Sample Selection strategy based on corner-aware distance metrics. Extensive experiments on three benchmarks demonstrate that JAOSD achieves state-of-the-art performance—94.74% mAP on HRSC2016, 92.43% AP50 on FGSD2021, and 80.44% mAP on DOTA v1.0—while maintaining real-time inference at 42.6 FPS. Cross-domain evaluation on the Singapore Maritime Dataset further confirms robust generalization capability from aerial to shore-based surveillance scenarios without domain adaptation. Full article

In the design of marine structures, structural design remains a critical activity, heavily guided by classification society rules that define dimensions of the structural elements. With the development of increasingly complex structures and the increasing use of composite materials in ship structural design, accurate knowledge of material properties, particularly those of sandwich panel cores, is essential for direct calculations. This article presents experimental data and numerical analysis results for the PVC core of sandwich panels, the selection of appropriate material models from the LS-DYNA standard material database, and the development of a user-defined material model to accurately capture the physical behaviour of foam cores in sandwich constructions. The comprehensive dataset obtained from polymer foam tests is made publicly available to support future structural calculations. Full article

The shipbuilding industry relies heavily on welding, which accounts for approximately 70% of the overall production process. However, the recent decline in skilled workers, together with rising labor costs, has accelerated the automation of shipbuilding operations. In particular, the welding activities are concentrated in the double-bottom region of ships, where collaborative robots are increasingly introduced to alleviate workforce shortages. Because these robots must directly recognize U-shaped weld joints, this study proposes an image-based classification system capable of automatically identifying and classifying such joints. In double-bottom structures, U-shaped weld joints can be categorized into 176 types according to combinations of collar plate type, slot, watertight feature, and girder. To distinguish these types, deep learning-based image recognition is employed. To construct a large-scale training dataset, 3D Computer-Aided Design (CAD) models were automatically generated using Open Cascade and subsequently rendered to produce synthetic images. Furthermore, to improve classification performance, the input images were split into left, right, upper, and lower regions for both training and inference. The class definitions for each region were simplified based on the presence or absence of key features. Consequently, the classification accuracy was significantly improved compared with an approach using non-split images. Full article

Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) has unique advantages in ship monitoring at sea due to its all-weather imaging capability. However, its unique imaging mechanism presents two major challenges. First, speckle noise in the frequency domain reduces the contrast between the target and the background. Second, side-lobe scattering blurs the ship outline, especially in nearshore complex scenes, and strong scattering characteristics make it difficult to separate the target from the background. The above two challenges significantly limit the performance of tailored CNN-based detection models in optical images when applied directly to SAR images. To address these challenges, this paper proposes a modulation and perturbation mechanism in the frequency domain based on a lightweight CNN detector. Specifically, the wavelet transform is firstly used to extract high-frequency features in different directions, and feature expression is dynamically adjusted according to the global statistical information to realize the selective enhancement of the ship edge and detail information. In terms of frequency-domain perturbation, a perturbation mechanism guided by frequency-domain weight is introduced to effectively suppress background interference while maintaining key target characteristics, which improves the robustness of the model in complex scenes. Extensive experiments on four widely adopted benchmark datasets, namely LS-SSDD-v1.0, SSDD, SAR-Ship-Dataset, and AIR-SARShip-2.0, demonstrate that our FMP-Net significantly outperforms 18 existing state-of-the-art methods, especially in complex nearshore scenes and sea surface interference scenes. AIS, the global ship identification standard, is vulnerable to outages, coverage gaps, and deliberate deactivation, highlighting the need for independent ship identification methods. Optical imaging satellites offer a global, non-compliance-dependent solution. Paired with deep neural networks trained on satellite imagery of ships, it has become possible to determine the identity of specific vessels, based on their unique visual signatures. This enables re-identification, even when cooperative signals like AIS are unavailable or unreliable. Our paper builds on previous work with neural networks for ship identification, and presents an approach based on contrastive self-supervised learning. Self-supervised learning allows for existing, unlabeled, and freely available satellite imagery datasets with ships, to be leveraged for model training. Using these self-supervised models to initialize ship identification training results in almost 32% higher accuracy compared to baseline models. In one case equivalent to doubling the labeled training data. This lowers the threshold for optical ship identification from space by reducing dependence on large labeled datasets. This scalability is crucial for making space-based ship identification viable for global maritime situational awareness. Full article

The use of ships and boats as sea-state (SS) measurement platforms has the potential to expand ocean observations while providing actionable information for real-time operational decision-making at sea. Within the framework of the Wave Buoy Analogy (WBA), this work develops an inverse approach in which efficient simulations of wave-induced motions of an advancing vessel are used to train a neural network (NN) to predict SS parameters across a broad range of wave climates. We show that a reduced set of novel motion discriminant variables (MDVs)—computed from short time series of heave, roll, and pitch motions measured by an onboard inertial measurement unit (IMU), together with the vessel’s forward speed—provides sufficient and robust information for accurate, near-real-time SS estimation. The methodology targets small, barge-like tugboats whose operations are SS-limited and whose motions can become large and strongly nonlinear near their upper operating limits. To accurately model such responses and generate training data, an efficient nonlinear time-domain seakeeping model is developed that includes nonlinear hydrostatic and viscous damping terms and explicitly accounts for forward-speed effects. The model is experimentally validated using a scaled physical model in laboratory wave-tank tests, demonstrating the necessity of these nonlinear contributions for this class of vessels. The validated model is then used to generate large, high-fidelity datasets for NN training. When applied to independent numerically simulated motion time series, the trained NN predicts SS parameters with errors typically below 5%, with slightly larger errors for SS directionality under relatively high measurement noise. Application to experimentally measured vessel motions yields similarly small errors, confirming the robustness and practical applicability of the proposed framework. In operational settings, the trained NN can be deployed onboard a tugboat and driven by IMU measurements to provide real-time SS estimates. While results are presented for a specific vessel, the methodology is general and readily transferable to other ship geometries given appropriate hydrodynamic coefficients. Full article

Long-term wind speed changes over the Yangtze River waterway have critical implications for inland shipping efficiency, emission dispersion, and renewable energy potential. This study utilizes a high-resolution 5 km gridded reanalysis dataset spanning 1979–2018 to conduct a comprehensive spatiotemporal analysis of surface wind climatology, variability, and trends along China’s primary inland waterway. A pivotal regime shift was identified around 2000, marking a transition from terrestrial stilling to a recovery phase characterized by wind speed intensification. Multiple change-point detection algorithms consistently identify 2000 as a pivotal turning point, marking a transition from the late 20th century “terrestrial stilling” to a recovery phase characterized by wind speed intensification. Post-2000 trends reveal pronounced spatial heterogeneity: the upstream section exhibits sustained strengthening (+0.02 m/s per decade, p = 0.03), the midstream shows weak or non-significant trends with localized afternoon stilling in complex terrain (−0.08 m/s per decade), while the downstream coastal zone demonstrates robust intensification exceeding +0.10 m/s per decade during spring–autumn daytime hours. Three distinct wind regimes emerge along the 3000 km corridor: a high-energy maritime-influenced downstream sector (annual means > 3.9 m/s, diurnal peaks > 6.0 m/s) dominated by sea breeze circulation, a transitional midstream zone (2.3–2.7 m/s) exhibiting bimodal spatial structure and unique summer-afternoon thermal enhancement, and a topographically suppressed upstream region (<2.0 m/s) punctuated by pronounced channeling effects through the Three Gorges constriction. Critically, the observed recovery contradicts widespread basin greening (97.9% of points showing significant positive NDVI trends), which theoretically should enhance surface roughness and suppress wind speeds. Correlation analysis reveals that wind variability is systematically controlled by large-scale atmospheric circulation patterns, including the Northern Hemisphere Polar Vortex (r ≈ 0.35), Western Pacific Subtropical High (r ≈ 0.38), and East Asian monsoon systems (r > 0.60), with distinct seasonal phase-locking between baroclinic spring dynamics and monsoon-thermal summer forcing. These findings establish a comprehensive, fine-scale climatological baseline essential for optimizing pollutant dispersion modeling, and evaluating wind-assisted propulsion feasibility to support shipping decarbonization goals along the Yangtze Waterway. Maritime ship detection is a critical task for security and traffic management. To advance research in this area, we constructed a new high-resolution, spatially aligned optical-SAR dataset, named MOS-Ship. Building on this, we propose MOS-DETR, a novel query-based framework. This model incorporates an innovative multi-modal Swin Transformer backbone to extract unified feature pyramids from both RGB and SAR images. This design allows the model to jointly exploit optical textures and SAR scattering signatures for precise, oriented bounding box prediction. We also introduce an adaptive probabilistic fusion mechanism. This post-processing module dynamically integrates the detection results generated by our model from the optical and SAR inputs, synergistically combining their complementary strengths. Experiments validate that MOS-DETR achieves highly competitive accuracy and significantly outperforms unimodal baselines, demonstrating superior robustness across diverse conditions. This work provides a robust framework and methodology for advancing multimodal maritime surveillance. Full article

Synthetic aperture radar (SAR), with its unique imaging principle and technical characteristics, has significant advantages in surface observation and thus has been widely applied in tasks such as object detection and target classification. However, limited by the lack of labeled SAR image datasets, the accuracy and generalization ability of the existing models in practical applications still need to be improved. In order to solve this problem, this paper proposes a spaceborne SAR image simulation technology and innovatively introduces the concept of bounce number map (BNM), establishing a high-resolution, parameterized simulated data support system for target recognition and classification tasks. In addition, an electromagnetic scattering characteristic-enhanced dual-branch network with simulated image guidance for SAR ship classification (SeDSG) was designed in this paper. It adopts a multi-source data utilization strategy, taking SAR images as the main branch input to capture the global features of real scenes, and using simulated data as the auxiliary branch input to excavate the electromagnetic scattering characteristics and detailed structural features. Through feature fusion, the advantages of the two branches are integrated to improve the adaptability and stability of the model to complex scenes. Experimental results show that the classification accuracy of the proposed network is improved on the OpenSARShip and FUSAR-Ship datasets. Meanwhile, the transfer learning classification results based on the SRSDD dataset verify the enhanced generalization and adaptive capabilities of the network, providing a new approach for data classification tasks with an insufficient number of samples. To address these issues, we propose M2S-YOLOv8, an improved framework based on YOLOv8, which integrates three key enhancements: First, a Multi-Scale Asymmetry-aware Parallelized Patch-wise Attention (MSA-PPA) module is designed in the backbone to strengthen the perception of multi-scale and geometrically asymmetric vessel targets. Second, a Deformable Convolutional Upsampling (DCNUpsample) operator is introduced in the Neck network to enable adaptive feature fusion with high computational efficiency. Third, a Wasserstein-Distance-Based Weighted Normalized CIoU (WA-CIoU) loss function is developed to alleviate gradient imbalance in small-target regression, thereby improving localization stability. Experimental results on the Unmanned Vessel Zhoushan Perception Dataset (UZPD) and the open-source Singapore Maritime Dataset (SMD) demonstrate that M2S-YOLOv8 achieves a balanced performance between lightweight design and real-time inference, showcasing strong potential for reliable deployment on edge devices of unmanned marine platforms. Monitoring marine litter in the Arctic is crucial for environmental assessment, yet automated methods are needed to process large volumes of visual data. This study develops and compares two distinct machine learning approaches to automatically detect floating marine litter, birds, and other anomalies from ship-based optical imagery captured in the Barents and Kara seas. We evaluated a supervised Visual Object Detection (VOD) model (YOLOv11) against a self-supervised classification approach that combines a Momentum Contrast (MoCo) framework with a ResNet50 backbone and a CatBoost classifier. Both methods were trained and tested on a dataset of approximately 10,000 manually annotated sea surface images. Our findings reveal a significant performance trade-off between the two techniques. The YOLOv11 model excelled in detecting clearly visible objects like birds with an F1-score of 73%, compared to 67% for the classification method. However, for the primary and more challenging task of identifying marine litter, which demonstrates less clear visual representation in optical imagery, the self-supervised approach was substantially more effective, achieving a 40% F1-score, versus the 10% obtained for the VOD model. This study demonstrates that, while standard object detectors are effective for distinct objects, self-supervised learning strategies can offer a more robust solution for detecting less-defined targets like marine litter in complex sea-surface imagery. Automatic Identification System (AIS) signals are critical for maritime traffic monitoring and collision avoidance. In satellite reception environments, signal collisions occur frequently due to large coverage areas and high ship density, severely degrading decoding performance. We propose a dual-branch deep learning architecture that combines precise boundary detection with segment-level classification to address this collision problem. The network employs a multi-scale convolutional backbone that feeds two specialized branches: one detects collision boundaries with sample-level precision, while the other provides semantic context through segment classification. We developed a satellite AIS dataset generation framework that simulates realistic collision scenarios including multiple ships, Doppler effects, and channel impairments. The trained model achieves 96% collision detection accuracy on simulated data. Validation on real satellite recordings demonstrates that our method retains 99.4% of valid position reports compared to direct decoding of the original signal. Controlled experiments show that intelligent collision removal outperforms random segment exclusion by 6.4 percentage points, confirming the effectiveness of our approach. Full article
