Forest fires increasingly challenge forest governance systems by exposing institutional coordination deficiencies, operational capacity gaps, and policy fragmentation. Although wildfire research has predominantly focused on forestry agencies, the contribution of internal security organizations to wildfire management remains underexplored. This study investigates the organizational barriers to effective forest fire combat from the perspective of Gendarmerie personnel in Türkiye using a Structural Equation Modelling framework. Survey data from 304 Gendarmerie personnel operating in wildfire-prone regions of Türkiye were analyzed using exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses within a structural equation modelling framework. The analysis identified two closely related dimensions of organizational wildfire-management capacity: Gendarmerie’s Operational Capacity and Gendarmerie’s Preventive Measures and Coordination. The findings suggest that operational capacity and preventive/coordination capacity should be understood as closely interconnected dimensions of organizational wildfire-management capacity. The structural model explains the importance of strengthening institutional capacity and collaborative governance within Türkiye’s wildfire management system. The findings support the implementation of integrated training programmes, enhanced technological infrastructure, standardized inter-agency coordination protocols, and preventive governance strategies to improve organizational preparedness and strengthen national wildfire resilience. Background/Objectives: Diet quality among Mexican-born immigrant women may be influenced by food security (FS) and neighborhood food environment factors; however, these relationships remain understudied. This exploratory study examined differences in diet quality/dietary outcomes by FS status and explored the potential for perceived neighborhood food availability to modify the association between FS and diet quality. Methods: Mexican-born immigrant women (n = 57) self-reported FS, diet, and perceived neighborhood food availability. Diet was assessed using the Southwest Food Frequency Questionnaire to calculate the Healthy Eating Index (HEI-2020) score. The six-item USDA FS Scale was used to dichotomize FS as high or low. Independent t-tests assessed differences in HEI-2020; fast-food frequency; and intake of fruit, vegetables, salty snacks, and sugar by FS status. An exploratory regression analysis examined whether perceived food availability modified the association between FS and diet quality using complementary Bayesian techniques to improve efficiency given the small sample size. Results: Women experiencing low FS had lower HEI-2020 than those with high FS (62 ± 8 vs. 66 ± 6; p = 0.03), as well as non-significantly lower intakes of fruit (236 ± 178 vs. 294 ± 239 g), vegetables (303 ± 188 vs. 331 ± 199 g), and salty snacks (6 ± 5 vs. 8 ± 10 g) and higher intakes of sugar (99 ± 55 vs. 96 ± 56 g) and fast food (2.5 ± 2.5 vs. 1.8 ± 1.7 times/month). No statistically significant evidence of the perceived neighborhood food availability modifying the association between FS and diet quality was observed. Exploratory analysis suggested that among women experiencing low FS, HEI-2020 score varied by perceived neighborhood food availability (low: 57; moderate: 61; high: 65; p = 0.077). Bayesian analyses suggested a greater impact of perceived neighborhood food availability among women with low FS and lower diet quality. Conclusions: In this small sample of Mexican-born women, low FS was associated with lower diet quality. Although evidence of effect modification by perceived neighborhood food availability was not observed, exploratory findings suggest that it may influence diet quality among women experiencing low FS and warrant investigation in larger studies. Renewable energy investment in the European Union (EU) occurs amid substantial variation in resources, market structures, energy security and regulatory quality. This study develops a comparative market-screening framework for the EU-27 in 2022–2024; it does not estimate the determinants of observed investment flows or the expected return of individual projects. A 12-criterion model combining data-driven CRITIC (Criteria Importance Through Inter-criteria Correlation) weights with TOPSIS (Technique for Order Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution) was applied. Denmark, Sweden and Austria formed the leading group, whereas Poland ranked last. Under the indicators and EU-27 sample conditions selected in this study, photovoltaic potential, the national electricity-price environment and regulatory quality carried the greatest informational weights; these weights do not represent causal effects or universal investor preferences. Robustness analyses showed very high temporal stability and high consistency after changing the aggregation method, while greater sensitivity arose from the weighting method and the assumed direction of electricity prices. The wind-resource criterion is represented by the midpoint of a reported national range rather than a spatially weighted developable-area average, which limits spatial precision. The results describe the relative maturity and quality of current national investment environments, not future transformation opportunity. The framework can support initial market pre-selection, but investor-specific weighting and project-level due diligence remain necessary. Full article

Our study provides a comparison of childcare attitudes in Hungary and Finland. One of Finland’s best-known social characteristics is its progressive and egalitarian approach to childcare, an important aspect of which is the equal sharing of roles and responsibilities between men and women. In contrast, post-socialist Hungary is more characterized by its acceptance of traditional gender roles and family models. The aim of this study is to provide a quantitative comparative analysis of attitudes towards sharing childcare responsibilities and the roles of parents (mothers and fathers) within families in Hungary and Finland, along the dimensions of traditional and egalitarian family models. Data from the 2022 module of the International Social Survey Programme “Family and Changing Gender Roles” with Hungarian (N = 1027) and Finnish (N = 1250) respondents were analyzed regarding attitudes towards division of work within the family, gender roles and childcare perceptions, with a focus on the views on fathers’ participation in family and household tasks. The main results show that in Hungary traditional attitudes towards women’s and men’s roles in the family are present, whereas Finnish respondents clearly reject traditional gender roles, indicating support for the egalitarian family model. Although we found some differences between various sociodemographic groups in this regard, the Finnish population’s attitudes towards parental roles are more homogeneous compared to the Hungarian sample, which seems to be polarized. Our results show that three main factors emerged during the principal component analysis: in the Hungarian sample, two distinct parental role groups emerged (financial responsibility and emotional-educational roles), whereas in the Finnish sample, a more unified, integrated perception of parental roles was identified. Based on regression analyses, demographic variables explain the differences in attitudes only to a limited extent. The roles of fathers with young children within the family reflect a caring pattern of active involvement in the child’s life in both countries. However, the traditional role of the father in providing financial security for the family is still an important expectation in Hungarian society, whereas in the Finnish population this is less emphasized. This research contributes to the understanding of differences in childcare, the effects and differences in family support policies in Scandinavian Finland and post-socialist Hungary, also suggests measures for a more equal distribution of childcare responsibilities. The analysis of genetic gain and changes in economic traits among modern and older cultivars is important to estimate breeding progress, evaluate the effectiveness of selection methods, identify optimised and neglected attributes, detect trade-offs, and inform strategies in crop improvement programs. This meta-analysis analysed global genetic gain and changes in seed yield, yield-related traits, and seed compositional attributes in soybean (Glycine max [L.] Merr.). A meta-database comprising 272 genetic gain data points recorded from 29 studies and 2555 mean performances captured from 34 research papers was compiled from research reporting cultivars released globally between the 1920s and 2010s. The mean values extracted from these studies were subjected to the R-Software analysis of variance (ANOVA) to reveal the effects of year of cultivar release and production region on the studied agronomic and compositional attributes. Boxplots were constructed to visualise data distribution and variability, and Pearson correlation and principal component analysis (PCA) were performed to examine inter-relationships among the measured traits with year of cultivar release and production region. Significant differences (p < 0.001) in mean performance were found among decades of cultivar release for seed yield (SY), number of seeds per pod (NSPod), days to flowering (DTF), days to maturity (DTM), and total biomass (TB). Cultivars released in the 2000s attained the highest mean SY of 3737.62 kg ha−1, compared to 2156.08 kg ha−1 observed for varieties released in the 1960s. Annual mean increases for SY ranged from 1.75 to 47 kg ha−1 year−1, driven primarily by improvements in number of seeds per plant (NSP), NSPod, plant height (PH), DTF, TB, and hundred seed weight (HSW). Conversely, seed protein content (SPC) declined across most breeding programs, while seed oil content (SOC) showed only modest improvement, and no consistent genetic gains were documented for micronutrient traits, including iron (Fe), zinc (Zn), calcium (Ca), or phytic acid (PA) content. Phytic acid, a potent chelator of essential minerals and a known inhibitor of protein digestibility in monogastric species, represents a critical but largely untracked compositional target in global soybean breeding. The absence of PA as a systematically monitored trait constitutes a significant gap in the literature, with direct implications for the nutritional quality of improved cultivars. Future breeding programs should adopt an integrated approach that simultaneously targets high SY, enhanced micronutrient bioavailability, and reduced antinutritional factor concentrations to advance both agricultural productivity and global food and nutrition security. Ensuring economic supplies of secure, affordable and clean energy is a global sustainability challenge. Previous studies have shown that, on balance, nuclear energy, based on today’s dominant light water reactors with the once-through use of nuclear fuel, compares well with renewable energy technologies and so should be considered a sustainable energy source. However, the energy-producing nuclear reactor requires a complex infrastructure around it to produce the fuel and to deal with highly radioactive products. The end-to-end fuel cycle thus has significant implications when assessing the overall sustainability of nuclear energy and the “most sustainable” pathways for future nuclear energy. The simplest fuel cycle option is the Once-Through Cycle (OTC) with disposal of used nuclear fuels. More technologically complex options involve different degrees of closing the fuel cycle by recycling and reusing materials from the used fuels. This paper defines six options with different degrees of materials recycling—innovatively presenting them in the form of a “Tube Map” based on that of the London Underground system. The results of this critical review show that recycling has positive impacts on the use of natural resources, environmental footprint, management of high-level radioactive wastes, and energy security. Challenges to the acceptance of closed cycles, however, include safety, security, proliferation, and economics; but our preliminary analysis shows either that solutions exist or that they are not discriminating factors in the choice of fuel cycle. To address these issues, it is important to learn from past experience of implementing closed cycles, and this review looks at the United Kingdom as an interesting case study. Overall, it is concluded that whilst nuclear energy per se should be recognised as sustainable, when implementing the OTC, the development of closed fuel cycles should be considered as a strategic choice that can enhance the overall sustainability of the system. Lastly, an update to the “level playing field” analysis previously proposed for analysing different energy systems is made to account for the differences between different nuclear fuel cycle choices. The only factors that are worse for closed cycles than the OTC are the lower technological maturity (due to greater technological complexity) of closed cycles—particularly those with multiple recycling—and proliferation resistance and physical security (due to the separation of materials in closed cycles). More than six decades of human activity in Antarctica resulted in chronic diesel contamination of soils surrounding research stations. Phytoremediation assisted by the native vascular plant Deschampsia antarctica is one of the few remediation strategies compatible with the Antarctic Treaty System guidelines. Securing suitable root-associated microbial resources is central to this approach. This work characterized the bacterial communities of the rhizosphere and root endosphere of D. antarctica growing in a chronically diesel-contaminated soil at Carlini Station and in three pristine sites on 25 de Mayo (King George) Island, South Shetland Islands, combining culture-independent 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing, PICRUSt2 functional prediction and culture-dependent bacterial strain isolation. The rhizospheric microbial community was consistently more diverse than those inhabiting the endosphere and was more strongly structured by site and associated soil physicochemical variables, with the contaminated site showing the most distinct composition, whereas the endosphere remained comparatively stable and host-selected. The community associated with the chronically contaminated site showed pronounced compositional differences and higher predicted abundances of hydrocarbon-degradation pathways in the rhizosphere. Polaromonas, Rhodococcus, Mycobacterium and Devosia were repeatedly associated with the community from the contaminated site across taxonomic, biomarker and predicted functional analyses. Members of the genera Polaromonas, Rhodococcus and Devosia were also recovered in culture. These taxa represent suitable candidates for the future development of microbe-assisted phytoremediation strategies in Antarctica. Full article

Unlike conventional models that typically rely on a single memristive synapse, this study uniquely proposes a novel 5D fractional-order memristive Hopfield neural network (FOMHNN) modulated by dual memristors to simultaneously emulate internal synaptic plasticity and external electromagnetic radiation effects in brain-like computing. Analytically, the FOMHNN features multiple parallel lines of equilibria with double-zero eigenvalues, rigorously proving the generation of hidden attractors. The continuous dynamical behaviors are systematically evaluated using the Adomian Decomposition Method (ADM), revealing rich phenomena including transient chaos, grid multi-scroll hidden attractors, and frequency-controllable extreme multistability with fractal-like basin boundaries. The theoretical model is physically validated on a Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) platform, demonstrating high precision and ultra-low power consumption. To bridge theoretical dynamics with cryptographic applications, a novel pseudo-random number generator is designed. By incorporating a chaotic derivative extractor, the generated sequences significantly reduce topological periodicity, successfully passing all rigorous NIST SP 800-22 statistical tests. Furthermore, an adaptive color image encryption scheme is developed, utilizing bidirectional feedback diffusion and least significant bit (LSB) key embedding. Security analyses confirm that the cipher, under the fractional order q=0.95, achieves near-ideal information entropy, optimal resistance against differential attacks, with NPCR and UACI values reaching 99.6114% and 33.4910%, both extremely close to their theoretical ideals (99.6094% and 33.4635%), and robust resilience against noise. Ultimately, the FOMHNN provides a highly secure and physically realizable chaotic source for advanced secure communications. Full article

Against a backdrop of growing rural differentiation and ongoing rural revitalization efforts, understanding how farmers develop intentions to relinquish their rural homesteads is essential for improving context-sensitive policy design. Drawing on survey data from 407 farmers in the pilot areas of homestead system reform in Shenyang City, this study proposes a “household capital endowment-value cognition/perceived risk-coping capacity-homestead withdrawal intention” framework. A structural equation model (SEM) is used to estimate both the direct effects of multidimensional household capital endowment and its indirect effects through the two mediating variables. Multi-group analyses are further conducted across generations, farm household pluriactivity, and village types. The results indicate that human and economic capital are positively associated with homestead withdrawal intention, whereas natural and social capital are negatively associated with it. Value cognition and perceived risk-coping capacity mediate several pathways: the former weakens withdrawal intention, whereas the latter strengthens it. The multi-group analyses further suggest variation in within-group significance patterns and coefficient estimates across generations, farm household pluriactivity, and village types. These findings highlight the need for differentiated homestead withdrawal policies that are responsive to farmers’ capital endowments and value–risk perceptions, thereby promoting the productive use of rural land resources while safeguarding farmers’ livelihood security. Cadmium (Cd) contamination in paddy soils represents a major risk to global food security and human health because Cd can readily enter the food chain through rice consumption. Therefore, clarification of the key processes and mechanisms by which agronomic practices regulate Cd accumulation in rice is essential. Based on integrated two-year pot and field experiments, we showed that different nitrogen fertilizer formulations, including nitrate-N (N), ammonium-N (A), and urea (U), had distinct effects on Cd accumulation and grain yield in rice. The N treatment reduced Cd concentrations in brown rice by 25.29% to 70% in the pot experiment and by 4.25% to 89.97% in the field experiment but decreased grain yield by 5% to 25%. By contrast, the A treatment increased Cd concentrations in brown rice by 17.86% to 58.62%, while maintaining or slightly increasing grain yield (−3% to +5%), and the U treatment showed intermediate responses. These responses were mainly associated with nitrogen-induced shifts in rhizosphere chemistry, especially changes in soil Cd availability linked to pH and exchangeable H+, although unmeasured redox-related processes may have also contributed under flooded conditions. Further analyses of internal Cd distribution and translocation, together with exploratory random forest modeling, suggested that Cd transport efficiency at key stem internodes and Cd redistribution from the panicle to the grain were important regulatory nodes associated with Cd concentrations in brown rice. These regulatory nodes were markedly affected by fertilizer formulation. Overall, our results describe a continuous pathway from rhizosphere Cd availability to internal transport and partitioning, through which nitrogen fertilizer formulations regulate Cd accumulation in rice. This study aimed to clarify how different nitrogen fertilizer formulations regulate the trade-off between grain yield and Cd accumulation in rice, based on the hypothesis that these formulations differentially modify rhizosphere chemistry and Cd bioavailability, that specific stem nodes contribute to control of grain Cd accumulation, and that the main regulatory processes differ between pot and field systems. Amid rising population pressure, heightened volatility in international markets, and increasingly binding domestic resource and environmental constraints, safeguarding food security while maintaining ecological security has become a salient policy and academic concern in China. Within this context, our study investigates whether and how green finance contributes to the dual security of food and ecology. Building on a theoretical analytical framework, we elaborate on the functional role of green finance and empirically assess its effects using provincial panel data from China. We construct a composite index to gauge the level of green finance development and then employ a two-way fixed-effects model with province and year fixed effects to identify the overall impact of green finance, followed by a mediation model to uncover the underlying transmission mechanisms and sub-sample regressions to examine heterogeneity. The empirical evidence indicates that, while green finance significantly improves the dual security of food and ecology, substantial heterogeneity is observed, with stronger effects in southern regions, major grain-producing functional areas, and plain regions. Mechanism analyses further show that green finance advances dual security through three primary channels of agricultural structure adjustment, planting specialization, and agricultural green technological innovation, among which shifts in agricultural production structure, greater centralization of planting, and enhanced agricultural green innovation capacity constitute the dominant transmission mechanisms. By integrating food security and ecological security within a unified framework, we clarify the multidimensional pathways through which green finance supports sustainable agricultural development and provide new empirical evidence on how financial instruments can reconcile production and environmental objectives. Global food security is facing challenges from population growth to diminishing arable land. Space mutation breeding holds promise for overcoming the variation limitations in conventional breeding; however, the mutagenic effects of the deep-space environment on rice and the transgenerational inheritance patterns of induced variations remain unclear. In this study, rice seeds carried by the Chang’e-5 spacecraft were used as materials. Whole-genome sequencing and whole-genome bisulfite sequencing were performed on the first (SP1) and second generations (SP2) of space-mutagenized plants after their return to Earth. The results showed that the number of genomic variants in the SP2 generation increased significantly compared with SP1, and SNPs, homozygous sites, and variants in coding regions were more heritable. The genome-wide methylation level was elevated in the SP2 generation, and among differentially methylated cytosines, those in the CG context exhibited the highest heritability. Furthermore, large-scale screening for nitrogen efficiency, tolerance to PEG-induced stress, and germination-stage cold resistant mutants was conducted in the SP2 generation, and phenotypic validation was performed in the third generation (SP3). By integrating multi-omics analyses of representative mutants to mine candidate genes, a number of heritable elite mutants were obtained, and seven candidate genes for key traits were identified. This study systematically elucidates the transgenerational inheritance patterns of deep-space-induced variation in rice. The multi-trait mutants obtained provide valuable germplasm resources for gene cloning and breeding applications in rice. Full article

The Horizon Scandal as Socio-Technical Failure: A Systematic Analysis Through Cyber Security and Digital Forensics Frameworks

The Post Office Horizon scandal represents one of the most severe miscarriages of justice in modern British legal history, rooted in the deployment of a defective IT system and the institutional suppression of evidence that exposed its unreliability. This paper provides a systematic analysis of the scandal through the combined lenses of cyber security, digital forensics, and IT governance, drawing directly on the Post Office Horizon Public Inquiry dataset—including witness testimony, technical documentation, audit records, and internal communications spanning more than two decades. While many of the technical and procedural failures discussed have been documented in prior scholarship, the paper’s principal contribution is the systematic mapping of those failures against recognised governance frameworks and the Legally Accountable Digital Systems (LADS) proposal this mapping motivates. We identify and analyse five interconnected failure categories: software defects and poor system design; deficient patch governance; inadequate audit logging and compromised evidence integrity; investigative failures and prosecutorial conflict of interest; and a systemic absence of technical expertise and independent oversight. Each category is mapped against nine governance framework documents, including ISO/IEC 27001, NIST SP 800-53 Rev. 5, NIST SP 800-218 (SSDF), COBIT 2019, ISO/IEC 27035, NIST SP 800-61, and ISO/IEC 27036, with ISO/IEC 27037 applied additionally to evidential handling failures and NIST SP 800-92 to log management failures. A counterfactual analysis indicates that compliance with these frameworks could plausibly have detected, exposed, or substantially reduced most of the documented failures, though this claim is necessarily inferential and conditional on good-faith implementation. The scandal was therefore not caused primarily by the absence of adequate frameworks but by their wholesale non-application and by institutional incentives, examined later in the paper, that can undermine even fully compliant controls. However, the analysis also surfaces a governance gap that no existing framework addresses: the institutional failure mode in which the organisation responsible for system integrity holds active incentives to suppress evidence of failure rather than remediate it. To address this gap, we propose the concept of Legally Accountable Digital Systems (LADS)—a governance category for systems whose outputs are used as evidence in legal proceedings—and outline three supplementary pillars: technical independence, institutional independence, and forensic admissibility governance. We draw a parallel with the Sarbanes–Oxley Act of 2002, arguing that the Horizon Inquiry dataset provides an equivalent empirical foundation for the statutory reform of digital evidence governance. Finally, we outline the substantial research opportunities the Inquiry dataset presents across IT systems analysis, cyber security, forensic accounting, social network analysis, and legal informatics—a resource comparable in significance to the Enron materials that shaped a generation of corporate governance reform. Accidents between vehicles and wildlife (WVCs) represent a complex management challenge, requiring integrated strategies that balance biodiversity conservation with public security and socio-ecological resilience. However, existing GIS hotspot analyses often identify spatial patterns without quantifying the structural landscape drivers that compel animal–road interactions. This study aims to identify “ecological traps” through an integrated landscape diagnostic framework combining Kernel Density Estimation (KDE) for statistical hotspot identification and landscape metrics (FRAGSTATS) for structural diagnosis, using the wild boar (Sus scrofa) as a focal species. An exploratory case analysis of high-collision locations was conducted, utilizing a high-quality dataset of 161 precisely georeferenced incidents recorded between 2015 and 2020 within the most critical municipalities of the Province of Avellino (Southern Italy). Results highlight two primary hotspots: the Guardia Lombardi-Conza corridor and the Avellino Nord-Pratola Serra axis. Quantitative analysis reveals that 39.1% of incidents occurred in non-irrigated arable lands and 19.9% in broad-leaved forests, with 52.8% of events situated within 500 m of river systems, which function as primary ecological movement corridors. Furthermore, fragmentation indices (Patch Density, Edge Density) were significantly higher in these focus areas, confirming that habitat isolation and the loss of core patches force animals to traverse infrastructure. These findings underscore the urgency of evidence-based spatial planning, offering a methodological framework with potential applicability for prioritizing mitigation actions, such as ecological corridors and intelligent signaling, to enhance the resilience of socio-ecological systems. This framework provides a scalable model for sustainable land management, ensuring that biodiversity conservation is integrated into long-term infrastructure governance. Full article

Sustainable livestock production in the arid regions of Central Asia depends almost entirely on groundwater resources. However, regional groundwater quality remains insufficiently characterized from the perspective of long-term water security and sustainable pasture management. Understanding the interaction between natural hydrogeochemical evolution and anthropogenic contamination is therefore essential for developing climate-resilient groundwater management strategies. This study presents a comparative hydrogeochemical assessment based on 101 groundwater samples collected from 58 sites in the Karaganda region and 43 sites in the Ulytau region during a single dry-season campaign (June–July 2025), with field sampling conducted across 4630 km2 of active pastureland within a combined regional area of 409,070 km2. Groundwater in Ulytau showed substantially greater mineralization, with a median TDS of 1027 mg/L compared with 538 mg/L in Karaganda; the proportion of samples exceeding 1000 mg/L was 53.5% (23/43) and 29.3% (17/58), respectively (Fisher’s exact p = 0.023). Median NO3 concentrations were also markedly higher in Ulytau (35.0 mg/L) than in Karaganda (5.0 mg/L), with the 50 mg/L guideline exceeded in 46.5% (20/43) vs. 19.0% (11/58) of samples (p = 0.004). NO3 and TDS were not significantly correlated in Karaganda (rs = 0.108, p = 0.418), whereas a moderate positive relationship occurred in Ulytau (rs = 0.388, p = 0.010). These results indicate that regional salinization is predominantly controlled by geogenic hydrochemical evolution, while nitrate contamination represents a localized anthropogenic pressure associated with vulnerable water points. The pronounced quantitative contrast between the two regions highlights the need for region-specific groundwater protection and management strategies to support sustainable livestock production and long-term water security in Central Kazakhstan. Rather than providing only a regional hydrochemical description, the present study evaluates groundwater quality as a sustainability indicator for livestock production, groundwater security, and regional adaptation to increasing water stress. Groundwater quality differed significantly between the two regions, with Ulytau exhibiting consistently higher mineralization, more frequent nitrate exceedances, and higher groundwater vulnerability. Statistical analyses confirmed that groundwater quality deterioration is controlled by different combinations of geogenic processes and localized anthropogenic impacts in the two hydrogeological settings. The findings demonstrate that groundwater quality represents a critical component of sustainable livestock production in Central Kazakhstan. The proposed regional groundwater vulnerability framework provides practical guidance for groundwater protection, climate adaptation, and the sustainable management of pastoral water resources under increasing environmental pressures.
