Effects of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy-Based Educational Intervention Addressing Fine Particulate Matter Exposure on the Mental Health of Elementary School Children

Objectives: This study assessed the effectiveness of a cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT)-based fine dust education program, grounded in the Health Belief Model (HBM), on elementary students’ fine dust knowledge, related behaviors, and mental health (depression, anxiety, stress, sleep quality). Methods: From September to November 2024, 95 students (grades 4–6) living near a coal-fired power plant in midwestern South Korea were assigned to either an intervention group (n = 44) or a control group (n = 51). The intervention group completed a three-session CBT-based education program; the control group received stress management education. Assessments were conducted at weeks 1, 2, 4, and 8 using standardized mental health and behavior scales (PHQ: Patient Health Questionnaire, GAD: Generalized Anxiety Disorder Assessment, PSS: Perceived Stress Scale, ISI: Insomnia Severity Index). Results: A chi-square test was conducted to compare pre- and post-test changes in knowledge and behavior related to PM2.5. The intervention group showed significant improvements in seven fine dust-related knowledge and behavior items (e.g., PM2.5 awareness rose from 33.3% to 75.0%; p < 0.05). The control group showed limited gains. Regarding mental health, based on a mixed-design ANCOVA, anxiety scores significantly declined over time in the intervention group, with group and interaction effects also significant (p < 0.05). Depression scores showed time effects, but group and interaction effects were not significant. No significant changes were observed for stress, sleep, or group × PM2.5 interactions. Conclusions: The CBT-based education program effectively enhanced fine dust knowledge, health behaviors, and reduced anxiety among students. It presents a promising, evidence-based strategy to promote environmental and mental health in school-aged children. Full article

Background/Objectives: Smartphone addiction (SA) and gaming addiction (GA) have become risk factors for individuals of all ages in recent years. Especially during adolescence, it has become very difficult for parents to control this situation. Physical activity and the effective use of free time are the most important factors in eliminating such addictions. This study aimed to test a new machine learning method by combining routine regression analysis with the gradient-boosting machine (GBM) and random forest (RF) methods to analyze the relationship between SA and GA with leisure time management (LTM) and the enjoyment of physical activity (EPA) among adolescents. Methods: This study presents the results obtained using our developed GBM + RF hybrid model, which incorporates LTM and EPA scores as inputs for predicting SA and GA, following the preprocessing of data collected from 1107 high school students aged 15–19 years. The results were compared with those obtained using routine regression results and the lasso, ElasticNet, RF, GBM, AdaBoost, bagging, support vector regression (SVR), K-nearest neighbors (KNN), multi-layer perceptron (MLP), and light gradient-boosting machine (LightGBM) models. In the GBM + RF model, probability scores obtained from GBM were used as input to RF to produce final predictions. The performance of the models was evaluated using the R2, mean absolute error (MAE), and mean squared error (MSE) metrics. Results: Classical regression analyses revealed a significant negative relationship between SA scores and both LTM and EPA scores. Specifically, as LTM and EPA scores increased, SA scores decreased significantly. In contrast, GA scores showed a significant negative relationship only with LTM scores, whereas EPA was not a significant determinant of GA. In contrast to the relatively low explanatory power of classical regression models, ML algorithms have demonstrated significantly higher prediction accuracy. The best performance for SA prediction was achieved using the Hybrid GBM + RF model (MAE = 0.095, MSE = 0.010, R2 = 0.9299), whereas the SVR model showed the weakest performance (MAE = 0.310, MSE = 0.096, R2 = 0.8615). Similarly, the Hybrid GBM + RF model also showed the highest performance for GA prediction (MAE = 0.090, MSE = 0.014, R2 = 0.9699). Conclusions: These findings demonstrate that classical regression analyses have limited explanatory power in capturing complex relationships between variables, whereas ML algorithms, particularly our GBM + RF hybrid model, offer more robust and accurate modeling capabilities for multifactorial cognitive and performance-related predictions. Background/Objectives: Hispanic adolescents experience elevated rates of disordered eating behaviors and body dissatisfaction, yet limited research has examined how gender and weight status interact to shape these risks within this population. Methods: A cross-sectional survey was conducted among 680 Hispanic adolescents (ages 9–15) from a predominantly Mexican-American middle school. Participants completed the Modified Kids Eating Disorder Survey (M-KEDS), and height and weight were objectively measured to determine BMI-for-age percentile. Chi-square tests, Mann–Whitney U tests, and logistic regression were used to assess differences by gender and weight status, including interaction effects. Bonferroni correction was applied for multiple comparisons. Effect sizes (Cramér’s V, odds ratios with 95% CI) were reported. Results: Approximately 73% of participants reported body dissatisfaction, with significant differences observed by gender and weight status. Adolescents with overweight/obesity reported significantly higher negative weight attitudes and extreme weight control behaviors than healthy-weight peers (p < 0.001), with large effect sizes. Females endorsed more disordered attitudes and behaviors, except for exercise to lose weight, which was more common among overweight/obese males. Conclusions: These findings underscore the high prevalence and significance of disordered eating behaviors in Hispanic adolescents, including those at a healthy weight. Results highlight the importance of culturally tailored, gender-sensitive screening and prevention strategies. Schools serve as critical settings for early identification, and tools like the M-KEDS can help address disparities in care access and improve outcomes among Hispanic youth. Full article

As digital marketing becomes more targeted and interactive, it is more critical to understand how young audiences perceive and react to compelling content. This research examines the extent to which consumer responses are affected by neuromarketing knowledge, interest, and screen-based advert exposure for middle school kids. Based on responses from 244 Greek adolescents aged 12–15 years, Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) was employed to investigate direct and mediated influences on purchase intentions with advertisement skepticism and persuasion knowledge as mediating factors. Results indicate that exposure and recognition have a significant influence on intentions both by means of cognitive as well as attitudinal processes, while interest only increases skepticism but not interaction. Multi-group analysis yielded significant differences according to age and experience, referring to the development path of advertising literacy. The results provide strong cues to educators, policymakers, and marketers who want to develop media-critical competencies among adolescents in an ever-shaping digital age. Full article

Youth unemployment remains a pressing issue in many emerging economies, where educational disparities and demographic pressures interact in complex ways. This study investigates the links between higher-education enrolment, demographic structure and youth unemployment in eight developing countries from 2009 to 2023. Panel cointegration techniques—Fully Modified Ordinary Least Squares (FMOLS) and Dynamic Ordinary Least Squares (DOLS)—are applied to estimate the long-run effects of gross tertiary-school enrolment on youth unemployment while controlling for GDP growth and youth-cohort size. Robustness is confirmed through complementary estimations with pooled-mean-group ARDL and system-GMM panels, which deliver consistent coefficient signs and significance levels. Results show a significant negative elasticity between enrolment and youth unemployment, indicating that wider access to higher education helps lower joblessness among young people. Youth-population growth exerts an opposite, positive effect, while GDP growth reduces unemployment but less uniformly across regions. The evidence points to an integrated policy mix—expanding tertiary (especially vocational and technical) education, managing demographic pressure and maintaining macro-economic stability—to improve youth-employment outcomes in emerging economies. Malaria remains a major public health issue, especially near hydroelectric dams that often promote mosquito breeding. This study aimed to establish baseline epidemiological data during the construction of the Singrobo–Ahouaty dam to support assessment and decision-making for short- and long-term health impacts on surrounding communities. A cross-sectional survey was carried out in randomly selected households. Blood samples were analyzed using thick/thin smears and rapid diagnostic tests, while sociodemographic and behavioral data were collected via questionnaires. Statistical analyses included chi-square, Mann–Whitney, Kruskal–Wallis tests, and logistic regression. The malaria prevalence was 43.1% (394/915). The parasite density averaged 405.7 parasites/µL. School-age children (6–13 years) showed the highest prevalence (74.3%, p < 0.0001), while younger children (0–5 years) had the highest parasite density (1218.0 parasites/µL, p < 0.0001). Highly elevated infection rates (>51%) occurred in Sokrogbo, N’Dènou, and Amani-Menou, with the highest density in Ahérémou 1 (5663.9 parasites/µL). Risk factors included being an informal worker (ORa = 1.5), working in the raw material sector (ORa = 1.4) or market gardening/rice farming (ORa = 0.9; p = 0.043), and frequent mosquito bites (OR = 0.4; p = 0.017). These results underscore the need for stronger vector control strategies, improved bed net distribution and follow-up, and enhanced intersectoral collaboration in dam-influenced areas to reduce malaria transmission. Background: Understanding the determinants of children’s outdoor play is an important element for child development and broader public health outcomes. There is growing evidence that children’s opportunities for play, particularly outdoor risky play, are diminishing. Parents are concerned with keeping their child safe while affording them independence to play. This study explored parents’ attitudes to risky play and practices around children’s independent mobility in Ireland with the aim of informing public health strategies promoting healthy childhood environments. Methods: An online survey comprising validated scales and standardised questions was completed by a nationally represented sample of 376 parents of children up to 16 years. Data was analysed via descriptive statistics, chi-square tests, and regression analysis. Results: A total of 376 participants accessed the survey, of which 349 completed it. A total of 84% of participants were female. A total of 74% agreed that children need regular exposure to actual risk to develop risk management skills, and 71% trusted their children to play safely. Chi-square tests reveal significant associations between outdoor play in the rain and school travel (p < 0.01), and appropriate age to begin activities at home and in educational settings (p < 0.05). A moderate association was found between the method of school travel and children’s permission to play in the rain (Cramer’s V = 0.51). Respondents considered supervision to be a necessity to ensure their children’s safety. Overall, the results indicate that parents were risk-averse in three of the six categories of risky play, namely, play near dangerous elements, play with adult tools, and out-of-sight play. Conclusions: This study presents a descriptive analysis of findings from the Ireland State of Play Survey. Findings indicate that although parents recognise the benefits of risky play, there is some contradiction between parental attitudes and actual practices, with a lack of willingness or confidence in permitting their children to participate in all such activities. Background: This study examined treatment outcomes for cannabis use disorder (CUD) among adolescents (12–17 years old) in the United States. Methods: Data from the 2018–2021 Treatment Episode Data Set-Discharges (TEDS-D) included 40,054 adolescents diagnosed with CUD. Descriptive statistics, Chi-square tests, and multivariable logistic regression assessed treatment outcomes and factors associated with treatment completion. Results: Only 36.8% of adolescents completed treatment. The most common reasons for not completing treatment were dropping out (28.4%) and transferring to another facility/program (17.0%). Males and Black non-Hispanic adolescents had lower odds of completing treatment (OR = 0.79, 95%CI: 0.75–0.84), while Hispanic (OR = 1.13, 95%CI: 1.08–1.18), Asian (OR = 1.56, 95%CI: 1.3–1.86) and Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander adolescents (OR = 2.31, 95%CI: 2.04–2.61) had higher odds of completion compared to their White counterparts. Independent living arrangements, homelessness, arrests in the past 30 days and younger age (<15 years old) decreased the likelihood of treatment completion. Adolescents with co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders also had lower completion rates (OR = 0.79, 95%CI: 0.77–0.86). Referral from schools/employers and treatment settings were associated with a higher success, particularly with stays of 4–6 months and 7–12 months. Conclusion: This study highlights the need for targeted CUD treatment programs that support at-risk adolescents, especially those experiencing homelessness or facing legal issues. High dropout and transition rates suggest a need for continuity of care and program integration between facilities. Strengthening coordination among public health officials, community organizations, and stakeholders is essential to developing culturally responsive treatment interventions that address social determinants of health, substance use, and mental health in this vulnerable population. Background/Objectives: Intergenerational care plays a significant role in shaping household dietary quality and human capital development in China. Influenced by the legacy of the one-child policy, the care provided in these families often prioritizes child-focused practices. This study examines how intergenerational care influences schoolchildren’s sugar-sweetened beverage (SSB) consumption. Methods: This study utilizes data from the 2014–2015 China Education Panel Survey (CEPS) to investigate the impact of intergenerational care on schoolchildren’s dietary behaviors, with a focus on sugar-sweetened beverage (SSB) consumption. We apply both ordinary least squares (OLS) regression and the ordered logit model to estimate the impacts, and we use the instrumental variables approach to address potential endogeneity. Results: Schoolchildren from only-child families report greater SSB consumption, while those from multi-child families consume less. Intergenerational care is linked to more digital media exposure, more pocket money, and less parental supervision. These findings withstand rigorous validation through multiple robustness checks, including sample restriction strategies and propensity score matching (PSM) analysis. The effect is especially pronounced among boys, schoolchildren from families with higher parental education levels, and schoolchildren attending schools without formal nutrition education programs. Conclusions: The result indicates that intergenerational care significantly increases SSB consumption among schoolchildren from only-child families. Community nutrition and school health education programs can reduce schoolchildren’s SSB consumption, thereby lowering risks of obesity and other public health concerns. Full article

Background: Adolescent girls and young women (AGYW) who engage in alcohol and substance abuse face more significant health and social consequences compared to the general population. This study evaluated the prevalence and associated factors of alcohol abuse and substance use among AGYW in Namibia. Methods: We conducted a retrospective analysis of programmatic data from AGYW aged 10–24 who participated in the Determined, Resilient, Empowered AIDS-free, Mentored, and Safe (DREAMS) component of the Reducing HIV Vulnerability: Integrated Child and Youth Health (REACH) Project HOPE Namibia from March to December 2024. Data analysis was conducted employing chi-squared tests alongside binomial and multinomial logistic regression. Results: Among the 19,662 participants included in this analysis, 2068 (10.5%) abused alcohol and/or substances in the previous six months. Participants who were HIV-negative or did not know their status (AOR = 1.57, 95% CI (1.15–2.14), and AOR = 1.50, 95% CI (109–2.07), respectively), from outside Windhoek, those who had failed or repeated school in the previous year (COR = 1.77, 95% CI (1.54–2.05)), those not disabled (AOR = 1.27, 95% CI (1.06–1.52)), those who had dropped out of school or had completed their studies, and those with no adult emotional support (AOR = 1.25, 95% CI (1.11–1.40)), were more likely to have abused alcohol and/or substances recently. In contrast, participants who were not depressed were less likely to have recently abused alcohol and substances. Conclusions: The prioritization of strategies to identify AGYW experiencing depression and to provide them with treatment is essential. Moreover, it is important to encourage parents and guardians to provide emotional support to AGYW, as it prevents them from abusing alcohol and substances. Full article

Objectives/Background: With increasing awareness of the association between physical activity and mental health, promoting youth health has gained prominence. For this, education and support are needed. As psychological school-based factors could be key to affecting this behavior, this study investigates middle school students’ trust in their physical education teachers and their grit, analyzing their effects on health-promoting behaviors that could follow these adolescents through adulthood. Methods: Middle school students, aged 12–14, were recruited from three schools in Sejong City, Korea, in May 2025; 420 survey questionnaires were distributed and 390 were returned (response rate: 92.86%). After eliminating those with insincere responses, 369 valid questionnaires (boys = 186, girls = 183) were analyzed. The analysis covered the descriptive statistics, Pearson’s correlation, and structural equation modeling, with grit, trust in physical education teachers, and health-promoting behaviors as variables. Results: The correlation analysis verified multicollinearity between trust in physical education teachers (closeness, fairness, teaching method, and physical ability), grit (effort, perseverance, and interest consistency), and health-promoting behaviors (self-actualization, health management, and stress management). A positive significant correlation was found between all subfactors (p < 0.05). The research model’s fit was confirmed through several fit indices; specifically, normed χ2 = 4.138, goodness-of-fit-index = 0.942, root mean square residual = 0.033, root mean square error of approximation = 0.092, incremental fit index = 0.965, Tucker–Lewis index = 0.947, and comparative fit index = 0.965, and all values were judged acceptable. The standardized coefficients of each latent variable explaining the measurement variables were 0.707 or higher. Therefore, the explanatory power of the measurement variables was also satisfactory; thus, the research model was appropriate and could be used for analysis. The model findings revealed that trust in physical education teachers had a positive effect on student grit (β = 0.505, p < 0.001) and that grit had a positive effect on health-promoting behaviors (β = 0.743, p < 0.001); however, trust in physical education teachers did not have a direct effect on health-promoting behaviors (statistically insignificant [β = 0.103, p > 0.05]). Thus, grit had a mediating effect between trust in physical education teachers and health-promoting behaviors (β = 0.375, p < 0.01). Conclusions: This study highlights the educational implications for physical education teachers of building trust and strengthening student grit as key factors in achieving sustainable health-promoting behaviors among adolescents. Zoonotic diseases are a persistent public health concern, especially in low- and middle-income countries like Brazil. This cross-sectional study evaluated the knowledge and perceptions of 132 high school students (70 public and 62 private) in Goiânia, Brazil, regarding zoonoses, using a structured questionnaire. Statistical analyses (Chi-square and Fisher’s exact tests) revealed significant differences (p < 0.05) between public and private school students in knowledge levels, pet care practices, and the awareness of zoonotic risks. While pet ownership was common in both groups, only 53% of private and 21% of public school students correctly defined “zoonosis.” Rabies, taeniasis, leptospirosis, tuberculosis, cysticercosis, cutaneous larva migrans, and leishmaniasis were the most frequently cited diseases, with private school students demonstrating greater recognition across all categories. However, most participants lacked detailed knowledge about transmission routes and prevention. Misconceptions—such as zoonoses affecting only low-income populations—were also identified. Preventive actions like sanitation, public education, and vaccination were commonly suggested but not consistently linked to zoonoses. These findings highlight critical educational gaps and emphasize the need to incorporate One Health principles into school curricula to improve youth understanding and support public health strategies for zoonosis prevention. This study explores the employability of engineers in the context of Industry 4.0, focusing on the KASH model (Knowledge, Attitude, Skills, Habits). Using a sequential exploratory design, we collected data from 800 engineers in Morocco through an online questionnaire. The findings reveal that attitude and knowledge have a significant impact on employability, whereas skills and habits show moderate to weak effects. The study employs Partial L6east Squares (PLS) Structural Equation Modeling to validate the model, demonstrating a strong predictive relevance (Q² = 0.714) and a high coefficient of determination (R² = 0.716). The results suggest that engineering schools should emphasize attitude and knowledge development to enhance employability in the rapidly evolving job market of Industry 4.0. Full article

Background: Active play has been proposed to complement school-based physical activity (PA) and promote increased movement-related activities relevant for the development of motor competence. Guided active play (GAP) paired with cooperative games provides sufficient moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) to improve motor competence for younger children. Whether guided active play exhibits physical activity outputs that are related to motor competence is uncertain. This study assessed the strength of relationships between play-based physical activity and movement skills by comparing linear regression and chi-square analyses. Methods: Forty-two children (Mage = 8.8 ± 0.8 years) participated in a community center program. PA was measured via accelerometry for GAP, alongside assessments of anthropometrics, fitness (leg power, strength, VO2max), and FMS (Test of Gross Motor Development-2). Multiple linear regression analysis examined reciprocal relationships. Chi-square and cross-tabulations analyzed categorical variables based on lab percentiles (low < 33%, high > 66%) for PA energy expenditure (PAEE), intensity (MVPA), FMS, and fitness. Results: GAP MVPA and object control skills (OC) showed positive reciprocal pathways (β = 0.308, β = 0.394; p ≤ 0.05). VO2max predicted MVPA (β = 0.408; p < 0.01), with leg power related to PAEE (β = 0.456; p ≤ 0.01). Chi-square analysis revealed significant associations between high OC skills and high PAEE (X2 = 15.12, p ≤ 0.05), and high individual average scores of OC with high MVPA (X2 = 11.90, p < 0.05. The high performance of AP and LP was associated with MVPA and PAEE, respectively. Conclusions: Findings support a positive feedback loop between MVPA and OC skills for GAP. GAP is an effective strategy for program interventions for children 8 to 10-year old. Full article

Education Improves Perceived Control but Not Risk Identification in Adolescents Regarding Fentanyl

Background/Objectives: In 2022, 2.2 million adolescents were diagnosed with substance use disorders, including 265,000 with opioid use disorder. The National Survey on Drug Use and Health revealed that 130,000 adolescents misused prescription pain medications, often obtaining them from friends or relatives. This age group perceives weekly heroin use as less risky than those younger or older. Methods: A questionnaire was developed for 7th to 12th graders in a rural Texas school district as part of a fentanyl awareness curriculum. The questionnaire included Likert scale, multiple choice, and yes/no questions. The participants were categorized into younger (grades 7th and 8th) and older students (grades 9th through 12th), and associations were explored between demographic characteristics, responses, and grade groups using chi-square tests. To assess confidence, behavior, and the impact of education, we used chi-square and Fisher’s exact tests. Results: The participants (n = 94; 85.11%) identified as Hispanic or Latino, with a smaller percentage identifying as White or more than one race. An association was found between feeling more in control of actions related to substances and fentanyl (p-value = 0.04) after receiving education. No association was found between education and confidence in identifying fentanyl. Conclusions: This study aligns with a surge in fentanyl-related overdose deaths in a high-intensity drug trafficking region. Recent fentanyl overdoses among school-age children prompted legislative changes in 2023, making this study valuable for understanding the epidemic within the geographical context. These results suggest that school-based education may play a role in strengthening adolescents’ behavioral intentions to fentanyl exposure, though additional efforts are needed to improve risk identification.
