Background: Bipolar disorder (BD) is a chronic psychiatric condition characterized by recurrent mood episodes and substantial functional impairment. Emerging evidence highlights the role of nutrition in modulating neurobiological pathways and influencing the course of BD. However, systematic recommendations for dietetic prescriptions remain limited. Methods: This narrative review was conducted by searching PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science up to October 2025. Keywords included “bipolar disorder,” “nutrition,” “dietary interventions,” and “nutritional psychiatry.” Studies focusing on nutritional patterns, dietary components, and dietetic recommendations relevant to BD were included. Evidence was synthesized narratively to identify potential dietary strategies and gaps in current knowledge. Results: The available literature suggests that nutritional interventions may influence mood stabilization, metabolic comorbidities, and treatment response in BD. Key findings highlight the potential benefits of Mediterranean-style diets, omega-3 fatty acids, micronutrients (including magnesium, zinc, and vitamins D and B-complex), and dietary approaches targeting inflammation and oxidative stress. Conversely, Western-style diets, rich in saturated fats and refined sugars, appear to exacerbate mood instability and metabolic burden. Despite promising findings, heterogeneity across studies and the scarcity of randomized controlled trials limit firm conclusions. Conclusions: Nutrition represents a promising adjunctive strategy in the management of BD. Dietetic prescriptions may contribute to improved outcomes by addressing both psychiatric symptoms and physical health comorbidities. Future research should prioritize well-designed clinical trials to establish evidence-based guidelines for integrating nutrition into BD management. Full article

This study evaluated the effects of dietary linseed cake on the fatty acid profile of meat and abdominal fat, and on growth performance in broiler chickens. A total of 198 birds were randomly allocated to three groups (66 birds/group). The control group (C) received a standard soybean meal-based feed, while the LIN6 and LIN12 groups were fed diets that were supplemented with 6% and 12% linseed cake, respectively. Linseed cake supplementation reduced saturated and monounsaturated fatty acids, increased n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) in meat and abdominal fat, and lowered the n-6/n-3 PUFA ratio (FDR-adjusted p < 0.05). The 12% inclusion resulted in a more pronounced accumulation of n-3 PUFAs—4.3–5.0 times higher than the control—while 6% inclusion increased n-3 PUFAs by 2.8–3.3 times (FDR-adjusted p < 0.05). However, 12% inclusion negatively affected growth performance, reducing body weight by 9.9% and feed intake by 10.4% at 42 days (p < 0.05), whereas the 6% inclusion had no adverse impact (p < 0.05). These results indicate that 6% linseed cake represents the optimal practical inclusion level, effectively enhancing the n-3 PUFA profile of broiler meat and abdominal fat without compromising growth, while higher inclusion levels may impair production performance. Prediabetes is a serious and major global problem afflicting approximately 21% of the world’s population. It is the intermediate stage between normal glucose levels and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Prediabetes is associated with major complications including the development of T2DM and increased cardiovascular disease (CVD). It can be easily diagnosed with an inexpensive plasma glucose level and/or a hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) measurement. The mainstay of treatment is intensive lifestyle (ILS) intervention, including reduction in calories, especially saturated fats, refined carbohydrates, etc., coupled with regular physical activity of 150 min per week since ILS changes, with at least a 5% weight loss, have been shown to reduce progression to T2DM in multiple studies globally. Also, metformin therapy has been shown to prevent the progression to T2DM. In conclusion, serious consideration by guideline committees to classify prediabetes as a disease is highly recommended based on its global burden, easy and cost-effective diagnosis, association with serious conditions of diabetes and CVD, and effective ILS intervention. Therapy targeting those at an especially high risk for T2DM, such as persons with impaired glucose tolerance (IGT), impaired fasting glucose (IFG) with values ≥ 110 mg/dL (6.1 mmol/L), and/or HbA1c ≥ 6.0% (42 mmol/mol) coupled with overweightness or obesity. Background: Ultra-processed foods (UPFs) have emerged as a critical component of diet quality, yet data on the associations between UPF and nutrient intakes remain limited. This study aimed to evaluate nutrient consumption in relation to UPF intake and adherence to international dietary guidelines for non-communicable disease (NCD) prevention. Methods: Data from 469 individuals aged 2–18 years enrolled in the Hellenic National Nutrition and Health Survey (HNNHS) were analyzed. Intakes were assessed using two 24 h recalls, and foods were classified according to the NOVA system. Participants were categorized by UPF energy intake tertiles. Nutrient adequacy was assessed using Nordic Nutrition Recommendations, European Society of Cardiology guidelines for macronutrients, and the Institute of Medicine’s Estimated Average Requirements and Adequate Intake values for micronutrients. Results: Children in the highest UPF tertile had significantly higher intakes of energy, carbohydrates, added sugars, saturated fats, polyunsaturated fats, and cholesterol, but lower intakes of protein compared to those in the lowest tertile. Fiber intake remained inadequate across all tertiles, with no significant differences. Regarding adherence to NCD prevention guidelines, children in the 3rd UPF tertile had a 2.3 times higher prevalence ratio for exceeding added sugar recommendations, while their protein intake prevalence ratio was 0.8 times lower. For micronutrients, the highest UPF tertile showed significantly elevated intakes of vitamins E, B1, folate, calcium, iron, copper, and sodium, but lower potassium intake compared to the lowest tertile. Conclusions: Our results underscore the need for effective public health strategies to improve diet quality in children and adolescents and prevent diet-related NCDs. Full article

Background/Objectives: Poor dietary habits are a major contributor to non-communicable diseases (NCDs), the leading cause of mortality worldwide. To promote healthier eating, governments and stakeholders have implemented various nutrition policies, including front-of-pack nutrition labeling (FOPNL). The Choices International Foundation (Choices), through its criteria, supports these efforts through its standardized nutrient profiling system (NPS). Originally developed to underpin a positive FOPNL logo, in 2021, the criteria were expanded into a globally oriented five-level profiling system covering 23 basic and 10 discretionary food groups, addressing key nutrients such as trans-fatty acids, saturated fat, sodium, sugar, fiber, and energy. To ensure continued scientific relevance, the Choices criteria are periodically reviewed by an independent International Scientific Committee (ISC). Methods: This paper presents the 2025 revision of the Choices criteria, focusing on priority areas identified through stakeholder consultation and recent scientific developments. Results: Key updates include the introduction of nutrient-based equivalence criteria for plant-based alternatives to meat and dairy, based on protein and selected micronutrient thresholds. Non-sugar sweeteners (NSSs) were newly included as a factor that lowers a product’s health classification and makes it ineligible for a positive FOPNL. Additionally, the industrially produced trans-fatty acid (iTFA) criteria were revised and aligned with the latest World Health Organization (WHO) recommendations, improving both technical feasibility and policy coherence. While options for incorporating whole-grain and micronutrient criteria were explored, these were not included in the current revision. Conclusions: The 2025 update system enhances the scientific rigor, policy alignment, and global applicability of the Choices system. By providing a harmonized and evidence-based tool, it aims to support national policies that foster healthier food environments and, ultimately, improve public health outcomes worldwide. Full article

This study investigated the effects of amylose/amylopectin (AM/AP) ratios in low-protein (LP) diets on the growth performance, fat deposition, and nutrient utilization in goslings. A total of 288 healthy, 35-day-old male Jiangnan White Geese were randomly divided into four treatment groups: one group fed a normal protein diet (16%) with an AM/AP ratio of 0.34 (NPR0.34), and three groups fed low protein diets (14%) with different AM/AP ratios (LPR0.26, LPR0.34, LPR0.44). Each group consisted of six replicates, with 12 geese per replicate, and they were fed for 28 days. The results showed that the body weight at 63 days and average daily gain (ADG) of the LPR0.44 group geese were significantly higher than those of the other groups (p < 0.01), while the feed-to-gain ratio (F/G) was lower (p < 0.05). The abdominal and mesenteric fat contents were lower in the LPR0.44 group than in the LPR0.26 group (p < 0.05), whereas the breast and leg muscle yields were higher (p < 0.05). The breast muscle redness (a*) of the LPR0.34 and LPR0.44 groups was higher than in the NPR0.34 group at 45 min (p < 0.05). The levels of C6:0, C8:0, C11:0, C12:0, and C13:0 in breast muscle saturated fatty acids (SFAs) of the LPR0.44 group were higher, while that of C18:0 was lower compared with the LPR0.26 group (p < 0.05). The serum total cholesterol (TC) and triglycerides (TGs) in the LPR0.44 group were lower than in the LPR0.26 group (p < 0.05). Hepatic lipase (HL) activity was significantly lower in the LPR0.44 group (p < 0.01). Regarding hepatic fatty acids, the levels of butyric acid (C4:0), lauric acid (C12:0), and nervonic acid (C24:1) were lower in the LPR0.44 group than in the LPR0.26 group (p < 0.05). No significant differences were observed in intestinal morphology, digestive enzyme activities, or nutrient utilization among the groups. (p > 0.05). In conclusion, adjusting the AM/AP ratio to 0.44 in a low-protein diet improved growth performance, regulated lipid metabolism, and maintained intestinal function in goslings. Full article

This study aimed to evaluate the effect of the supplementation with rumen-protected fat from soybean or palm and thermally processed soybean on the feed intake, digestibility of nutrients, milk production, and milk content of ewes. Twenty-five Pantaneiras ewes, 3–6 years old, 39.8 ± 3.51 kg body weight, and 65 ± 4 days in milk, were distributed into five treatments (5 ewes in each) in a completely randomized design continuous trial, over 56 days. The treatments consisted of daily supplementation with soybean-based rumen-protected fat (SPF; 30 g/d), palm-based rumen-protected fat (PPF; 30 g/d), a blend of soybean and palm rumen-protected fats (Blend; 30 g/d), thermally processed soybean (TPS; 124 g/d), and a control without supplementation. We performed a daily evaluation of feed intake and milk production, and every 14 days, we evaluated the nutrient digestibility, milk composition, and fatty acid profile. The protein and casein content were lower in the SPF treatment. Supplementation with PPF resulted in a higher saturated fatty acid content, while supplementation with TPS resulted in higher monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fatty acid contents. The supplementation with SPF resulted in higher milk fatty acid functionality. Feeding ewes SPF or TPS enhanced nutrient intake and digestibility, leading to increased milk production and an improved milk fatty acid profile. In contrast, supplementation with PPF resulted in a less favorable fatty acid composition. Full article

This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of a palm oil-free structured lipid (SL) as a lipid base in sandwich-type cookie fillings. SL was enzymatically interesterified from a blend of soybean oil, high-oleic peanut oil, and crambe hard fat (34:34:32). Four fillings (30% fat) were prepared using either SL or commercial shortening (CS), with processing by mixer (F1, F2) or ball mill (F3, F4). Commercial sandwich cookies were included as a reference Standard. SL exhibited an improved lipid profile, containing up to 14% less saturated fatty acids, higher levels of monounsaturated (34.5%), and increased long-chain fatty acids (~18% C22:0). Physicochemical analyses were conducted over a storage period of 180 days, including evaluations of texture, particle distribution, color, water activity, oil loss, and oxidative stability. Among the formulations, F4 demonstrated the highest firmness (at ~121.1 N) and the smallest D50 (~80 µm). However, it also exhibited lower oxidative stability (induction period: ~6.75 to 14.6 h) compared to CS-based fillings (~36 to 42.5 h), along with a higher oil loss (≥4.7%). Sensory of F4 yielded an overall acceptance index ≥ 70%, though it received lower scores for waxiness. Overall, the SL showed promising potential as a structuring fat in the fillings. Full article

Compositional heterogeneity of oil bodies (OB) from nine high-oleic peanut (HOP) cultivars was systematically characterized. The results demonstrated that nine OB samples exhibited variability in R, G, and B values (red, green, and blue color channels), with the B channel values significantly differing among cultivars, while no significant color variation was observed in their overall appearance. Fats and proteins dominated the dry matter composition of OB, consistent with typical plant OB structural profiles. The high-fat OB of cultivars J572-O, J6-O, Z215-O, and H985-O exhibited outstanding efficiency in loading lipophilic bioactive compounds. OBs from J16-O, G37-O, Z215-O, J572-O, Y37-O, and Y65-O had a distinctive fatty acid profile: high-oleic acid and monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFAs), with reduced linoleic acid, palmitoleic acid, and saturated fatty acids (SFAs). All OB samples contained four tocopherol isomers (α-, β-, γ-, δ-), with α-tocopherol (5.07–12.59 mg/100 g) and γ-tocopherol (6.36–14.81 mg/100 g) as the predominant forms. Essential amino acids (EAAs) and hydrophobic amino acids were detected, with leucine, phenylalanine, and valine being highly abundant. TEAA/TAA and TEAA/TNEAA ratios complied with FAO/WHO standards. J16-O stood out with a balanced fatty acid profile, high tocopherols, and quality protein, making it a promising candidate for functional foods. Full article

Grain feeding is used to alleviate grazing pressure on the Tibetan Plateau. This study employed metabolomics and transcriptomics to elucidate the regulatory mechanisms of grain feeding on yak (Bos grunniens) meat quality, intramuscular fat, and amino acids. The results demonstrate that grain feeding significantly reduces meat shear force (11.05 vs. 18.98) and increases intramuscular fat content (1.48 g/100 g vs. 0.75 g/100 g). This is accompanied by elevated levels of monounsaturated and saturated fatty acids, alongside a decreased proportion of n-3 PUFAs, leading to a higher n-6/n-3 ratio of 5.13. Mechanistically, metabolomic analysis identified 83 differential metabolites, including flavor-related nucleosides, amino acids, and key lipids, such as palmitoleic and oleic acid, which collectively contribute to improved flavor and tenderness. Concurrently, transcriptomics revealed 1047 differentially expressed genes enriched in lipid metabolism pathways, including PPAR signaling, steroid biosynthesis, and glycerolipid metabolism. The PPAR signaling pathway plays a central role in coordinating lipid synthesis, and critical genes, such as PNPLA2, PPARA, SREBF1, and PRKAA1, were highlighted. In conclusion, grain feeding improves yak meat tenderness and fat deposition by modulating lipid metabolism at both the transcriptional and metabolic levels. This improvement, however, is balanced against a less favorable n-6/n-3 PUFA ratio. Full article

Objective: To evaluate population-level temporal relationships between modifiable lifestyle factors and rising breast, colorectal and uterine cancer incidence rates among females under 50 years old. Methods: This retrospective ecological study utilized data from the United States Cancer Statistics (USCS) for cancer incidence, the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) for health-related behaviors, and the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) for physical activity. Modifiable lifestyle factors analyzed included obesity (BMI ≥ 30 kg/m2), smoking, alcohol use, fiber and saturated fat intake, caloric intake, and physical activity. Trends were assessed using average annual percent change (AAPC), and population-level correlations between cancer incidence and lifestyle factors were evaluated using Pearson correlation coefficients. Results: Between 2001 and 2018, 914,659 breast, 144,130 colorectal, and 124,399 uterine cancer cases were identified. The largest increases in cancer incidence occurred in age groups under 30 years old. Colorectal cancer increased by 6.9%, followed by uterine cancer at 4.8% and breast cancer at 1.7%, all p < 0.001. When examining this age group by race, colorectal cancer increased by 8.0% (p < 0.001) annually in White women aged 20–24 years, while uterine cancer rose 4.8% (p < 0.001) in Hispanic women in the 20–24 and 25–29 year age groups. Breast cancer also increased by 2.0% (p < 0.001) per year in White women 25–29 years old. Smoking rates decreased, and alcohol consumption and obesity rates increased. No significant correlation was found between cancer incidence and smoking, caloric intake, saturated fat, or physical activity. A moderate positive correlation was identified between alcohol use and cancer risk (r = 0.55–0.67, p < 0.05). Obesity prevalence showed strong population-level temporal correlation with cancer incidence for all three cancers with stratified analysis demonstrating the strongest correlations in patients with class III obesity. Conclusions: From 2001 to 2018, the incidence of breast, colorectal, and uterine cancers increased most sharply among women under 30 years of age. Over the same period, obesity prevalence in this population also increased. These population-level observations are hypothesis-generating and require confirmation in individual-level, prospective studies to determine whether and how obesity and other lifestyle factors influence early-onset cancer risk. Prunus spinosa L. is a shrub with nutritional potential, yet limited information is available on the composition of its stone fruit and leaves. This study aimed to investigate and compare the macro and micronutrients, fatty acid profile, and lipophilic and hydrophilic antioxidant compounds in fruits and leaves, as well as their potential functional properties. The results revealed that leaves contain higher crude protein (10.94%) than fruits (6.46%) but lower crude fiber (13.86% compared to 22.16%). The iron (370.37 mg/kg) and manganese (43.57 mg/kg) were significantly higher (p < 0.05) in leaves than in fruits (44.87 versus 7.02 mg/kg). The fruits’ lipid profile was rich in monounsaturated fatty acids (56.8%), whereas the leaves showed higher saturated fatty acids (38.3%) and polyunsaturated fatty acids (43.7%). The leaves also presented significantly higher n-3 content (25.2%) compared with fruits (1.80%). The antioxidant compounds were higher in the leaves, with total vitamin E exceeding 1268 mg/kg, primarily α-tocopherol (1214.98 mg/kg) isoform, lutein (409.38 mg/kg), and astaxanthin (3.74 mg/kg), compared with only 74.75 mg/kg total vitamin E in the fruits. The total hydroxycinnamic polyphenols in leaves were 92.63% higher in leaves than in fruits, with anthocyanins at 63.23% and flavonols at 95.82%. Although the leaves demonstrated superior antioxidant potential and mineral content compared to the fruits, making it a promising candidate for nutraceutical and functional food applications, the fruits maintained a healthier lipid profile suitable for dietary fat intake. This study aimed to investigate the interactive effects of dietary starch concentration (220 or 420 g/kg DM) and supplementation with calcium salts of palm fatty acids (CSPFAs; 0 or 30 g/kg DM) on carcass characteristics and meat quality in lambs. Thirty-two castrated Dorper × Santa Inês male lambs (initial body weight 25.0 ± 2.85 kg) were randomly assigned to four experimental diets in a 2 × 2 factorial arrangement for 44 days. Although carcass yield remained unaffected (average 49.4%; p > 0.05), CSPFA supplementation significantly increased fat deposition, including perirenal fat mass (590 vs. 400 g; p = 0.005), renal fat score (2.90 vs. 2.66; p = 0.035), and subcutaneous fat thickness (3.8 vs. 1.9 mm; p = 0.017). A starch × CSPFA interaction (p = 0.014) was observed for carcass cooling, where high-starch diets reduced the 24 h temperature only in lambs not receiving CSPFA (7.45 vs. 8.48 °C; p = 0.028). CSPFA also altered the muscle fatty acid profile by increasing C16:0 and total saturated fatty acids (SFA) while reducing polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA). In conclusion, palm-oil–derived CSPFA enhances carcass fatness but compromises the nutritional value of lamb meat by promoting an unfavorable fatty acid profile. Full article

Background: Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) remain the leading cause of mortality worldwide and are strongly influenced by dietary habits. Beyond caloric intake, nutrients act as molecular signals that regulate cardiac metabolism, mitochondrial function, inflammation, and epigenetic remodeling. Objectives: This review aims to synthesize current evidence on how dietary patterns and specific nutritional interventions regulate cardiac metabolism and function through interconnected molecular and epigenetic mechanisms, highlighting their relevance for cardiovascular disease prevention. Methods: A narrative review of the literature was conducted using PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science, focusing on studies published between 2006 and 2025. Experimental, translational, and clinical studies addressing diet-induced modulation of cardiac metabolic pathways, oxidative and inflammatory signaling, epigenetic regulation, and gut microbiota-derived metabolites were included. Results: The analyzed literature consistently shows that unbalanced diets rich in saturated fats and refined carbohydrates impair cardiac metabolic flexibility by disrupting key nutrient-sensing pathways, including AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK), proliferator-activated receptor alpha (PPARα), mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR), and sirtuin 1/peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma coactivator 1-alpha (SIRT1/PGC-1α), leading to mitochondrial dysfunction, oxidative stress, chronic inflammation, and maladaptive remodeling. In contrast, cardioprotective dietary patterns, such as caloric restriction (CR), intermittent fasting (IF), and Mediterranean and plant-based diets, enhance mitochondrial efficiency, redox balance, and metabolic adaptability. These effects are mediated by coordinated activation of AMPK-SIRT1 signaling, suppression of mTOR over-activation, modulation of nuclear factor kappa-light-chain-enhancer of activated B cells (NF-κB) and nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) pathways, and favorable epigenetic remodeling involving DNA methylation, histone modifications, and non-coding RNAs. Emerging evidence also highlights the central role of gut microbiota-derived metabolites, particularly short-chain fatty acids, in linking diet to epigenetic and metabolic regulation of cardiac function. Conclusions: Diet quality emerges as a key determinant of cardiac metabolic health, acting through integrated molecular, epigenetic, and microbiota-mediated mechanisms. Targeted nutritional strategies can induce long-lasting cardioprotective metabolic and epigenetic adaptations, supporting the concept of diet as a modifiable molecular intervention. These findings provide a mechanistic rationale for integrating personalized nutrition into cardiovascular prevention and precision cardiology, complementing standard pharmacological therapies. Background/Objectives: The Fourth Italian National Food Consumption Survey (IV SCAI 2017–2020) provides updated and comprehensive data on the dietary habits of the Italian population. The study aimed to assess nutrient intakes and their main food sources among individuals aged 3 months to 74 years and to evaluate the adequacy of intakes against the Italian dietary reference values (DRVs). Methods: A nationally representative sample of 1969 participants were surveyed using two non-consecutive food diaries (ages 3 months–9 years) and 24 h recalls (ages 10–74 years) in accordance with the European Food Safety Authority’s EU Menu guideline. The multiple source method was used to estimate the usual intakes accounted for intra-individual variability. Nutrient adequacy was assessed against age- and sex-specific DRVs, and the main food sources of macro- and micronutrients were identified. Results: Energy intake was below DRVs for adults, particularly women, while protein intake exceeded recommendations across all ages, mainly from animal sources (67% of total). Total fat (38%En) and saturated fat (12%En) exceeded the recommendations, whereas carbohydrates (45%En) and dietary fibre were suboptimal. Vitamin D and calcium intake were markedly below DRVs for all age groups; iron inadequacy was prevalent among females. The main energy sources were cereals (39%), milk and dairy (15%), oils and fats (13%), and meat (10%). Vegetables and fruits were leading contributors to vitamins A and C, while meat, fish, and dairy provided vitamin B12 and D. Conclusions: The Italian diet remains cereal-based but shows nutritional imbalances: notably, excessive protein and fat intake and widespread deficiencies in vitamin D, calcium, iron, and fibre. These findings underline the need for targeted nutrition policies to realign dietary patterns with the national recommendations. Full article
