Impact of Elevation and Hydrography Data on Modeled Flood Map Accuracy Using ARC and Curve2Flood

This study assesses the accuracy of flood extent predictions in five U.S. watersheds. We generated flood maps for four return periods using various digital elevation models (DEMs)—FABDEM, SRTM, ALOS, and USGS 3DEP—and two versions of the GEOGLOWS River Forecast System (RFS) hydrography. These comparisons are notable because they build on operational global hydrology models so subsequent work can develop global modeled flood products. Models were made using the Automated Rating Curve (ARC) and Curve2Flood tools. Accuracy was measured against USGS reference maps using the F-statistic. Our results show that flood map accuracy generally increased with higher return periods. The most consistent and reliable improvements in accuracy occurred when both the DEM and hydrography datasets were upgraded to higher-resolution sources. While DEM improvements generally had a greater impact, hydrography refinements were more important for lower return periods when flood extents were the smallest. Generally, DEM resolution improved accuracy metrics more as the return period increased and hydrography and bare earth DEMs mattered more as the return period decreased. There was a 38.9% increase in the mean F-statistic between the two principal pairings of interest (FABDEM-RFS2 and SRTM 30 m DEM-RFS1). FABDEM’s bare-earth representation combined with RFS2 sometimes outperformed higher-resolution non-bare-earth DEMs, suggesting that there remains a need for site-specific investigation. Using ARC and Curve2Flood with FABDEM and RFS2 is a suitable baseline combination for general flood extent application. Full article

Understanding the impacts of climate change on species’ geographic distributions is fundamental for biodiversity conservation and resource management. As a key plant group for ecological restoration and windbreak and sand fixation in arid and semi-arid ares in China’s Three Northern Regions (Northeast, North, and Northwest China), Caragana spp. exhibit distribution patterns whose regulatory mechanisms by environmental factors remain unclear, with a long-term lack of climatic explanations influencing their spatial distribution. This study integrated 2373 occurrence records of 44 Caragana species in China’s Three Northern Regions with four major environmental variable categories. Using the Biomod2 ensemble model, current and future climate scenario-based suitable habitats for Caragana spp. were predicted. This study innovatively combined quantitative analyses with Kira’s thermal indexes (warmth index, coldness index) and Wenduo Xu’s humidity index (HI) to elucidate species-specific relationships between distribution patterns and hydrothermal climatic constraints. The main results showed that (1) compared to other environmental factors, climate is the key factor affecting the distribution of Caragana spp. (2) The current distribution centroid of Caragana spp. is located in Alxa Left Banner, Inner Mongolia. In future scenarios, the majority of centroids will shift toward lower latitudes. (3) The suitable habitats for Caragana spp. will expand overall under future climate scenarios. High-stress scenarios exhibit greater spatial changes than low-stress scenarios. (4) Hydrothermal requirements varied significantly among species in China’s Three Northern Regions, and 44 Caragana species can be classified into five distinct types based on warmth index (WI) and humidity index (HI). The research findings will provide critical practical guidance for ecological initiatives such as the Three-North Shelterbelt Program and the restoration and management of degraded ecosystems in arid and semi-arid regions under global climate change. This study investigates a modified five-dimensional chaotic system by incorporating structural term adjustments and Caputo fractional-order differential operators. The modified system exhibits significantly enriched dynamic behaviors, including offset boosting, phase trajectory rotation, phase trajectory reversal, and contraction phenomena. Additionally, the system exhibits bidirectional transitions—conservative-to-dissipative transitions governed by initial conditions and dissipative-to-conservative transitions controlled by fractional order variations—along with a unique chaotic-to-quasiperiodic transition observed exclusively at low fractional orders. To validate the system’s physical realizability, a signal processing platform based on Digital Signal Processing (DSP) is implemented. Experimental measurements closely align with numerical simulations, confirming the system’s feasibility for practical applications. Full article

Greenhouses are applied to mitigate the deleterious effects of inclement weather, which facilitates the optimal growth and development of the crops. South China has a climate characterized by high temperature and high humidity, and the temperature and relative humidity inside a Venlo greenhouse are higher than those in the atmosphere. In this paper, the numerical model of the flow distribution of a Venlo greenhouse in South China was established using the CFD method, which mainly applied the DO model, the k-e turbulence model, and the porous medium model. The porous resistance characteristics of tomatoes were obtained through experimental research. The inertial resistances of tomato plants in the x, y, and z directions were 80,000,000, 18,000,000, and 120,000,000, respectively; the viscous resistances of tomato plants in the x, y, and z directions were 0.43, 0.60, and 0.63, respectively. The porosity of tomato plants was 0.996. The average difference between the temperature of the established numerical model and the experimental temperature was less than 0.11 °C, and the average relative error was 2.72%. This research also studied the effects of five management and structure parameters on the velocity and temperature distribution in a greenhouse. The optimal inlet velocity is 1.32 m/s, with the COF of velocity and temperature being 9.23% and 1.18%, respectively. The optimal skylight opening is 1.76 m, with the COF of velocity and temperature being 10.68% and 0.88%, respectively. The optimal side window opening is 0.67 m, with the COF of velocity and temperature being 9.25% and 2.10%, respectively. The optimal side window height is 1.18 m, with the COF of velocity and temperature being 9.50% and 1.33%, respectively. The optimal planting interval is 1.40 m, with the COF of velocity and temperature being 15.29% and 0.20%, respectively. The results provide a reference for the design and management of Venlo greenhouses in South China. Full article

Background/Objectives: The present study aimed to evaluate the oral health and patient satisfaction of flexible and non-metal clasp dentures (NMCD) compared to removable partial dentures (RPD) using a systematic review. Methods: The PICOS framework of this review was as follows: Do rehabilitations involving flexible dentures or NMCD have a similar success rate to those using RPD? Thus, the PICOS approach involves the following topics: (P) Population/Problem: partial edentulous adult patients; (I) Intervention: patients rehabilitated with flexible dentures or NMCD; (C) Comparison: patients rehabilitated with standard RPD; (O) Outcome: clinical parameters such as oral health, masticatory function, and patient satisfaction; and (S) Study Type: clinical trials and observational studies (cohort, case–control, and cross-sectional). No language restrictions were applied to the studies. The search strategy consisted of the following keywords in different databases: ((flexible) OR (nonmetal) OR (non-metal) OR (thermoplastic)) AND (denture). Only clinical trials and observational studies (cohort, case–control, and cross-sectional studies) from the last 15 years were included, and no language restrictions were applied. Studies that did not describe the denture material were excluded. Results: Of the 2197 potentially relevant records, 14 studies were included in the present review. Two studies reported retrospective results, while twelve reported a prospective evaluation. Considering the thermoplastic materials, five studies evaluated polyester, five polyamides, three polyacetals, and only one study evaluated polyetheretherketone (PEEK). Flexible dentures and NMCD demonstrated similar periodontal status and bone levels on abutment teeth to RPD after up to 12 months. Flexible dentures exhibited a higher degree of redness of the mucosa after 12 months. One study showed a lower maximum bite force for flexible dentures compared to RPD. No study has performed a clinical evaluation of mastication and chewing ability. Conclusions: Despite increased short-term patient satisfaction for flexible dentures and NMCD, there is weak evidence to support a similar clinical performance of flexible dentures and NMCD to RPD. Transcranial Pulse Stimulation in Alzheimer’s: Long-Term Feasibility and a Multifocal Treatment Approach

Background/Objectives: Neuromodulation is under investigation as a possibly effective add-on therapy in Alzheimer’s disease (AD). While transcranial pulse stimulation (TPS) has shown positive short-term effects, long-term effects have not yet been fully explored. This study aims to evaluate the long-term feasibility, safety, and potential cognitive benefits of TPS over one year in patients with Alzheimer’s disease, focusing on domains such as memory, speech, orientation, visuo-construction, and depressive symptoms. Methods: We analyzed preliminary data from the first ten out of thirty-five patients enrolled in a prospective TPS study who completed one year of follow-up and were included in a dedicated long-term database. The protocol consisted of six initial TPS sessions over two weeks, followed by monthly booster sessions delivering 6000 pulses each for twelve months. Patients underwent regular neuropsychological assessments using the Alzheimer Disease Assessment Scale (ADAS), Mini-Mental Status Examination (MMSE), Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA), and Beck Depression Inventory (BDI-II). All adverse events (AEs) were documented and monitored throughout the study. Results: Adverse events occurred in less than 1% of stimulation sessions and mainly included mild focal pain or transient unpleasant sensations, as well as some systemic behavioral or vigilance changes, particularly in patients with underlying medical conditions, with some potentially related to the device’s stimulation as adverse device reactions (ADRs). Cognitive test results showed significant improvement after the initial stimulation cycle (ADAS total improved significantly after the first stimulation cycle (M_pre = 28.44, M_post = 18.56; p = 0.001, d = 0.80, 95% CI (0.36, 1.25)), with stable scores across all domains over one year. Improvements were most notable in memory, speech, and mood. Conclusions: TPS appears to be a generally safe and feasible add-on treatment for AD, although careful patient selection and monitoring are advised. While a considerable number of participants were lost to follow-up for various reasons, adverse events and lack of treatment effect were unlikely primary causes. A multifocal stimulation approach (F-TOP2) is proposed to enhance effects across more cognitive domains. Full article

The cecal microbiota is essential for intestinal health and performance. This study describes the succession patterns of the cecal microbiota in Japanese quail (Coturnix japonica) until 42 days of age. Sixty quails were raised using standard conditions and fed corn–soybean meal diets. Cecal contents were sampled from five birds weekly from 7 to 42 days of age and submitted to Illumina 16S rRNA sequencing for metabarcoding analysis. Diversity and functional prediction were carried out with QIIME2, PICRUSt2, STAMP and MicrobiomeAnalyst 2.0. Firmicutes increased from 50% at 7 days to more than 80% at 42 days, whereas Bacteroidota decreased from 45% to 12% in the same period. Alpha diversity progressively increased with age, indicating a richer and more balanced microbiota at later ages. Genera such as Bacteroides were predominant in the beginning and later were replaced by Lachnospiraceae, Ruminococcus and Faecalibacterium. These developmental taxonomic features aligned with significant shifts in ten metabolic pathways identified by prediction, revealing a transition from biosynthetic functions to complex carbohydrate metabolism and cell wall biosynthesis. The first seven days are considered a critical window for probiotics intervention, which may favor the establishment of a microbiota that is more stable and beneficial to quail performance. As veganism becomes more popular, the number of vegan pregnant women and children is steadily increasing. During vegan pregnancy and early childhood, there is a high risk for nutrient deficiencies that may impair child development. External factors, such as healthcare advice, social networks, and social environments, that affect the diet of vegan pregnant women, parents, and their children, as well as their approach towards dietary supplementation, have not yet been investigated. Various sources of information, combined with a lack of expertise, sparse food and nutritional health literacy, and qualitatively heterogeneous information provision by medical experts, unsettle vegan pregnant women and parents and affect their dietary choices and potentially the health of their children. The VedieS study aims to investigate potential connections between external influences and associated impacts on a vegan diet and the intake of dietary supplements (DS) of pregnant women and children. Two surveys are being conducted within the study: one targeting 1000 vegan pregnant women and parents, and another targeting 60 experts in each of five healthcare groups: gynecologists, pediatricians, general practitioners, pharmacists, and dietitians. This study is the first to examine how socio-economic, social, and further informational factors influence dietary practices during vegan pregnancy and childhood. It highlights the need for reliable, expert-led guidance, as current information sources are often inconsistent and may put these vulnerable groups at risk. Full article

Background/Objectives: The Plague of Justinian marked the beginning of the First Pandemic (541–750 CE), yet no genomic evidence of Yersinia pestis has previously been recovered from the Eastern Mediterranean, where the outbreak was first recorded. This study aimed to determine whether Y. pestis was present in a mid-6th to early 7th century mass grave in Jerash, Jordan, and to characterize its genome within the broader context of First Pandemic strains. Methods: We analyzed samples from multiple individuals recovered from the Jerash mass grave. Initial screening for potential pathogen presence was conducted using proteomics. Select samples were subjected to ancient DNA extraction and whole genome sequencing. Comparative genomic and phylogenetic analyses were conducted to assess strain identity and evolutionary placement. Results: Genomic sequencing recovered Y. pestis DNA from five individuals, revealing highly similar genomes. All strains clustered tightly with other First Pandemic lineages but were notably recovered from a region geographically close to the pandemic’s historical epicenter for the first time. The near-identical genomes across diverse individuals suggest an outbreak of a single circulating lineage at the time of this outbreak. Conclusions: This study provides the first genomic evidence of Y. pestis in the Eastern Mediterranean during the First Pandemic, linking archaeological findings with pathogen genomics near the origin point of the Plague of Justinian. Summary Sentence: Genomic evidence links Y. pestis to the First Pandemic in an ancient city. Full article

Background: There is growing interest in the potential role of manganese (Mn) in the development of Alzheimer’s Disease and related dementias (ADRD). Methods: In this nested pilot study of a ferroalloy worker cohort, we investigated the impact of chronic occupational Mn exposure on cognitive function through β-amyloid (Aβ) deposition and multi-omics profiling. We evaluated six male Mn-exposed workers (median age 63, exposure duration 31 years) and five historical controls (median age: 60 years), all of whom had undergone brain PET scans. Exposed individuals showed significantly higher Aβ deposition in exposed individuals (p < 0.05). The average annual cumulative respirable Mn was 329.23 ± 516.39 µg/m3 (geometric mean 118.59), and plasma Mn levels were significantly elevated in the exposed group (0.704 ± 0.2 ng/mL) compared to controls (0.397 ± 0.18 in controls). Results: LC-MS/MS-based pathway analyses revealed disruptions in olfactory signaling, mitochondrial fatty acid β-oxidation, biogenic amine synthesis, transmembrane transport, and choline metabolism. Simoa analysis showed notable alterations in ADRD-related plasma biomarkers. Protein microarray revealed significant differences (p < 0.05) in antibodies targeting neuronal and autoimmune proteins, including Aβ (25–35), GFAP, serotonin, NOVA1, and Siglec-1/CD169. Conclusion: These findings suggest Mn exposure is associated with neurodegenerative biomarker alterations and disrupted biological pathways relevant to cognitive decline. Full article

In Brazil, Plasmodium infections in non-human primates (NHPs) have been associated with P. simium and P. brasilianum, which are morphologically and genetically similar to the human-infecting species P. vivax and P. malariae, respectively. Surveillance and monitoring of wild NHPs are crucial for understanding the distribution of these parasites and assessing the risk of zoonotic transmission. This study aimed to detect the presence of Plasmodium spp. genetic material in Platyrrhini primates from 47 municipalities in the states of Bahia and Minas Gerais. The animals were captured using Tomahawk-type live traps baited with fruit or immobilized with tranquilizer darts. Free-ranging individuals were chemically restrained via inhalation anesthesia using VetBag® or intramuscular anesthesia injection. Blood samples were collected from the femoral vein. A total of 298 blood and tissue samples were collected from 10 primate species across five genera: Alouatta caraya (25), Alouatta guariba clamitans (1), Callicebus melanochir (1), Callithrix geoffroyi (28), Callithrix jacchus (4), Callithrix kuhlii (31), Callithrix penicillata (175), Callithrix spp. hybrids (15), Leontopithecus chrysomelas (16), Sapajus robustus (1), and Sapajus xanthosthernos (1). Molecular diagnosis was performed using a nested PCR targeting the 18S small subunit ribosomal RNA (18S SSU rRNA) gene, followed by sequencing. Of the 298 samples analyzed, only one (0.3%) from Bahia tested positive for Plasmodium brasilianum/P. malariae. This represents the first detection of this parasite in a free-living C. geoffroyi in Brazil. These findings highlight the importance of continued surveillance of Plasmodium infections in NHPs to identify regions at risk for zoonotic transmission. Full article

Cadmium (Cd) is a highly toxic heavy metal that disrupts development and reproduction, primarily through oxidative stress. In this context, sulforaphane (SFN), an antioxidant compound, may serve as a promising agent to counteract Cd-induced oxidative damage and prevent developmental and reproductive abnormalities. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of SFN on reproductive toxicity induced by cadmium chloride (CdCl2) in the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans (C. elegans). Five experimental groups were established: (I) Control: no treatment, (II) dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO): 48 h with 0.01% DMSO, (III) CdCl2: 24 h with 4600 µM CdCl2, (IV) SFN + CdCl2: 24 h with 100 µM SFN followed by 24 h with both SFN and CdCl2, and (V) SFN: 48 h with 100 µM SFN. Co-exposure to SFN and CdCl2 prevented the reduction in the percentage of adult nematodes and increased egg-laying. It also significantly improved hatching rates, allowing more embryos to reach the larval stage, and prevented reductions in body size. However, no effects were observed on glutathione S-transferase-4 (GST-4) levels in the transgenic CL2166 strain. In conclusion, SFN substantially prevents Cd-induced reproductive toxicity in C. elegans. Future studies should investigate the molecular mechanisms by which SFN enhances egg-laying and offspring viability in this model. Full article

Diagnosing Bias and Instability in LLM Evaluation: A Scalable Pairwise Meta-Evaluator

The evaluation of large language models (LLMs) increasingly relies on other LLMs acting as automated judges. While this approach offers scalability and efficiency, it raises serious concerns regarding evaluator reliability, positional bias, and ranking stability. This paper presents a scalable framework for diagnosing positional bias and instability in LLM-based evaluation by using controlled pairwise comparisons judged by multiple independent language models. The system supports mirrored comparisons with reversed response order, prompt injection, and surface-level perturbations (e.g., paraphrasing, lexical noise), enabling fine-grained analysis of evaluator consistency and verdict robustness. Over 3600 pairwise comparisons were conducted across five instruction-tuned open-weight models using ten open-ended prompts. The top-performing model (gemma:7b-instruct) achieved a 66.5% win rate. Evaluator agreement was uniformly high, with 100% consistency across judges, yet 48.4% of verdicts reversed under mirrored response order, indicating strong positional bias. Kendall’s Tau analysis further showed that local model rankings varied substantially across prompts, suggesting that semantic context influences evaluator judgment. All evaluation traces were stored in a graph database (Neo4j), enabling structured querying and longitudinal analysis. The proposed framework provides not only a diagnostic lens for benchmarking models but also a blueprint for fairer and more interpretable LLM-based evaluation. These findings underscore the need for structure-aware, perturbation-resilient evaluation pipelines when benchmarking LLMs. The proposed framework offers a reproducible path for diagnosing evaluator bias and ranking instability in open-ended language tasks. Future work will apply this methodology to educational assessment tasks, using rubric-based scoring and graph-based traceability to evaluate student responses in technical domains. Full article

Background/Objectives: Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a health related threat world-wide. Biosynthesized gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) using plant extracts have been reported to exhibit certain biological activity. This study aimed to biosynthesize AuNPs using an aqueous extract of Eruca sativa leaves and to evaluate their biocompatibility, antimicrobial activity, and antioxidant properties. Methods: AuNPs were biosynthesized using an aqueous extract of Eruca sativa leaves. Their biocompatibility was evaluated through hemolytic activity and assessments of hepatic and renal functions in rats. AuNPs were biologically evaluated as antimicrobial and antioxidant agents. Results: The AuNPs exhibited particle sizes of 27.78 nm (XRD) and 69.41 nm (AFM). Hemolysis assays on red blood cells revealed negligible hemolytic activity (<1%). Hepatic enzyme levels, including alanine aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) were studied. ALT, AST, and ALP levels showed no significant changes compared to the negative control. However, LDH levels were elevated at higher concentration (52.8 µg/mL), while the lower concentration (26.4 µg/mL) appeared to be safer. Renal biomarkers, urea and creatinine, showed no significant changes at either concentration, indicating minimal nephrotoxicity. The antimicrobial activity of AuNPs, plant extract, and gold salt was tested against five microorganisms: two Gram-positive bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pneumoniae), two Gram-negative bacteria (Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa), and a fungal strain (Candida albicans). The AuNPs exhibited minimum inhibition concentrations (MICs) of 13.2 µg/mL against S. aureus and S. pneumoniae, 26.4 µg/mL against E. coli and C. albicans, and 39.6 µg/mL against P. aeruginosa, suggesting selectivity towards Gram-positive bacteria. Furthermore, the AuNPs demonstrated strong antioxidant activity, surpassing that of vitamin C. Conclusions: The biosynthesized AuNPs exhibited promising biocompatibility, selective antimicrobial properties, and potent antioxidant activity, supporting their potential application in combating the AMR. Castration remains a common surgical procedure in equids, yet postoperative complications such as hemorrhage, infection, and eventration persist, influencing surgical outcomes. This retrospective study introduced a novel modified semi-closed castration technique aimed at minimizing these complications. Eighty-five sexually intact mature male equids (including horses, ponies, and donkeys) underwent the described inguinal castration procedure under general anesthesia. The technique involved a carefully managed opening and subsequent secure closure of the parietal vaginal tunic, enabling direct inspection of tunic contents while reducing risks associated with fully open or closed approaches. The median surgery duration was 60 min (range, 45–95), with no intraoperative complications. Postoperatively, only two equids (2.35%) exhibited scrotal swelling, which was resolved rapidly with NSAIDs. No cases of hemorrhage, pyrexia, or infection occurred. Follow-up, conducted via owner interviews after a minimum of three months, confirmed complete recovery and primary intention healing in all patients, who returned to normal activity within two days post-surgery. Compared to previously documented complication rates ranging from 2% to 48%, the present approach demonstrates superior results. Additionally, this study proposes refining existing castration technique classifications, focusing explicitly on the vaginal tunic’s status post-procedure (open, semi-closed, closed) for clarity and consistency. This novel semi-closed inguinal technique effectively integrates inspection advantages with closed technique safety, offering significantly reduced complication rates and enhanced postoperative recovery profiles in equids undergoing castration.
