Road freight transport (RFT) faces growing pressure from increasing freight demand, stricter environmental requirements, and persistent driver shortages. Automation technologies (ATes)—especially semi-autonomous driving—are increasingly viewed as a practical pathway toward improving the sustainability performance of freight operations; however, their effects depend strongly on infrastructure and operational conditions. This study evaluates the sustainability potential of autonomous and semi-autonomous trucks through an integrated framework combining (i) a structured review of technical and regulatory developments, (ii) surveys of transport enterprises (TEes) and road users (RUs), (iii) SWOT/TOWS analysis, and (iv) a cost minimization logistics model that links operational feasibility to infrastructure readiness (IR). The proposed model minimizes cost per tonne-kilometre and introduces an Infrastructure Readiness Score (IRS) to represent the share of a route that can be operated in automated mode; it also accounts for fuel savings from platooning and higher maintenance and capital costs of semi-autonomous vehicles (SAVs). Results indicate that, as IRS increases, semi-autonomous operations achieve higher daily mileage and lower unit costs, with a break-even point at approximately IRS ≈ 0.125. Beyond this threshold, unit costs decline from EUR 0.0433 to EUR 0.0348 per tonne-kilometre as IRS rises toward 0.6, after which further infrastructure improvements yield diminishing mileage gains. These cost and utilization improvements imply sustainability benefits via improved energy efficiency and reduced emissions intensity per tonne-kilometre. Nevertheless, survey evidence highlights major adoption barriers, including insufficient IR, regulatory uncertainty, technological reliability concerns, and limited public trust in fully autonomous systems. Overall, the findings support semi-autonomous trucking as the most feasible near-term stage of transition, while emphasizing that infrastructure upgrades and governance mechanisms are critical for scaling sustainability gains. Sustainability is increasingly viewed as a crucial element shaping contemporary transport policies and operational strategies. This article presents a comprehensive economic evaluation of Polish international road freight carriers in 2024 compared with the results from previous years. It introduces an original and innovative method for assessing the economic condition of transport companies, based on real-time operational data and an integrated demand–supply diagnosis of the road freight market, which also supports macroeconomic forecasting. The study covers carriers operating in Eastern and European Union (EU) markets and spans an exceptionally long period (2009–2024), enabling the identification of long-term trends across four business cycles. Unlike existing research, which typically analyses isolated profitability or efficiency indicators, the proposed method offers a universal and contextual framework linking economic outcomes with detailed company characteristics. It provides a structured assessment of cost components across eight categories and reveals relationships between economic performance and factors such as transport directions, fleet utilisation, company size, diversification strategies, and region of origin. The analysis includes a comparison of two carrier groups, statistical profiling of companies, and average vehicle kilometre costs by company size and transport direction. This contextual analysis, including a comparison between the Polish and Lithuanian markets, strengthens the credibility of the results by situating them within a broader comparative framework and supporting a more accurate interpretation of the observed patterns. The pilot nature of this cross contextual approach constitutes an additional contribution of the study, providing a basis for future comparative research on the functioning of transport enterprises across the EU and the Eastern markets. In addition, the assessment incorporates a pilot comparative study of external factors influencing the transport market, conducted among Polish and Lithuanian companies. This multifaceted and internationally unprecedented approach strengthens the interpretability of the results and offers a robust foundation for strategic decision-making and organisational adaptation in an increasingly competitive and uncertain transport market. Government policies and market forces have created new possibilities for wage growth in the logistics industry, which can reshape the development direction and labor reward of enterprises. The inclusive financial policy implemented by the Chinese government is effective, and the inputs of inclusive finance can affect the intelligent and low-carbon operations, the technical economic benefits and labor productivity in the logistics industry, thereby promoting wage growth. Meanwhile, the government-led industrial structure transformation and transportation infrastructure have brought a large number of new workers, transport individuals and enterprises into the logistics industry, which intensify the homogeneous service competition of enterprises, thereby hampering wage growth. In the market force, with the scale expansion of Internet access and logistics delivery vehicles and freight volume, the scale effects may enhance the wage level in the logistics industry. In addition, the moderating effect between policy and market forces can also confirm the existence of a positive spillover effect. The heterogeneity of wage growth varies across the eastern, central and western regions, as well as between the northern and southern regions. These findings highlight the importance of promoting the growth of labor wage income by policy implementation in inclusive finance, preferential measures on agricultural product logistics, integrated operation in the manufacturing and logistics field and the Belt and Road Initiative. Amid intensified global climate mitigation efforts, integrating rail freight into carbon emissions trading schemes became critical under China’s “Dual-Carbon” strategy. Despite rail’s significantly lower emissions intensity compared to road transport, existing pricing frameworks inadequately internalized its environmental externalities, which limited its competitive advantage. To address this gap, this study systematically reviewed international and domestic practices of integrating transport into carbon trading systems and developed a novel “four-layer, three-dimensional” emissions trading scheme (ETS) framework tailored specifically for China’s rail freight sector. Employing a Stackelberg bilevel optimization model, this study analyzed how carbon quotas and pricing influenced rail operators’ pricing and investment decisions. The results showed that under optimized quotas and carbon prices, railway enterprises were able to generate surplus carbon credits, creating new revenue streams and enabling freight rate reductions. This “carbon revenue–freight rate feedback loop” not only delivered environmental benefits but also enhanced rail’s economic competitiveness. Overall, this study significantly advances the understanding of carbon-based pricing mechanisms in railway freight, providing robust theoretical insights and actionable policy guidance for achieving sustainable decarbonization in China’s transport sector. Heavy-duty vehicle (HDV) platooning, facilitated by vehicle-to-vehicle communication, plays a crucial role in transforming logistics and transportation. It reduces fuel consumption and emissions while enhancing road safety, supporting sustainable freight strategies and the integration of autonomous vehicles. This study employs a hybrid approach combining wind tunnel experiments and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations to analyze HDV platoon aerodynamics. The approach has two sequential phases: single-HDV simulation validation and multi-HDV platooning simulation. In the first phase, a single HDV CFD simulation is validated against NASA’s benchmarks, with optimized mesh generation, proper models, and conditions, and errors minimized below 1%. In the second phase, the validated model is used for multi-HDV platooning simulations, maintaining consistent mesh structures, physical models, and boundary conditions. Various platoon configurations are explored to assess the effects of speed, inter-vehicle spacing, and platoon size and position on aerodynamic drag, with virtual wind tunnel simulations evaluating drag coefficients. Our findings reveal that inter-vehicle spacing critically influences drag. An optimal range of 0.25 to 0.5-times the HDV length is identified to achieve an effective balance between safety and fuel efficiency, reducing platoon aerodynamic drag by 13–44% compared to single HDVs. While platoon speed is generally limited to impacting drag, it becomes more pronounced when an HDV platoon has very small inter-vehicle spacings, or in platoons exceeding five HDVs. Moreover, as the platoon size increases, the overall aerodynamic drag coefficient diminishes, particularly benefiting the rear HDV in larger platoons with smaller inter-vehicle spacing. These insights offer a comprehensive understanding of HDV platoon aerodynamics, enabling logistics enterprises to optimize platoon configurations for fuel savings, improved traffic flow, larger platoon formation, and enhanced transportation safety. Cold chain logistics are crucial for reducing agricultural product loss, yet the environmental impact of energy and packaging consumption, among others, demands attention, making the search for eco-friendly development modes essential. Based on data from 30 provinces in China from 2015 to 2021, this study analyzes the basic correlation between the development of cold chain logistics of fresh agricultural products (CCLFAP) and the ecological environment (EE) by using a random forest regression model in comparison with the XGBoost model. Correlation heatmaps were used to analyze the relationships between the cold chain logistics of fresh agricultural products and various factors of the ecological environment. The generalized additive model was then used to establish the connection between cold chain logistics and the ecological environment, identifying significant factors impacting EE. The results demonstrate that a higher development level of cold chain logistics corresponds to a better development trend of EE. The economic efficiency and technical aspects of cold chain logistics for fresh agricultural products are closely related to ecological pressures and responses. The number of employees in the logistics industry, the trading volume of fresh agricultural products, the number of refrigerated vehicles, and the capacity of the cold room have significant positive correlations with the ecological environment, while the per capita consumption of fresh agricultural products, the number of cold chain logistics patent applications, and the road density had significant negative correlations with the ecological environment. The effects of the number of cold chain logistics enterprises and the freight turnover of agricultural products transported by the cold chain on the ecological environment fluctuated. These findings contribute to reducing climate and environmental emergencies throughout the life cycle, offering sustainable development solutions for the fresh agricultural product cold chain logistics industry. Road freight transport promotes economic development while impeding the future of green development due to excessive fossil fuel use. Road freight enterprises need to adapt to stricter environmental regulations while maintaining a reasonable level of profit. However, this is not easy in a growing economy such as China’s, whose domestic freight demand is increasing rapidly with economic growth. The development of emerging transport technologies (ETTs) creates great potential for reducing the negative environmental impact of road freight transport. This study considers five candidate ETTs: eco-driving, fleet platooning, vehicle utilization, optimized vehicle design, and renewable energy trucks. A system dynamics analytical framework is established to explore the long-term impact of ETTs on road profit and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions under the uncertainty of macroeconomic development. Road freight enterprises affiliated with the Qingdao port in China are taken as a case study. The economic and environmental impact of their adoption of ETTs is projected from 2020 to 2035. The results show that the economic growth in the port hinterland leads to an increase in road freight volume and profit, but it also yields a greater amount of GHG emissions from road transport. All of the candidate ETTs exhibit a positive effect on reducing GHG emissions from road transport, but they also cause profit losses due to a high application cost, even though they reduce transport operating costs by fuel savings. The results of the Sobol sensitivity analysis show that GHG reductions are sensitive to the adoption of ETTs. Thus, a carbon-based compensation mechanism is introduced. With this mechanism, road freight enterprises should prioritize vehicle utilization, optimized vehicle design, and eco-driving in their adoption of ETTs for more sustainable development. The results provide systems-based insights into ETT deployment decisions for road freight companies. Full article

The development of cross-border e-commerce is generally faced with problems such as high freight, long transportation time, and low service level. However, overseas warehouses can effectively solve the above problems to a certain extent, and they can improve consumer satisfaction. Therefore, this paper proposed a method combined with the entropy technique for order of preference by similarity to ideal solution (E-TOPSIS) model and complex network analysis theory to make a comprehensive determination of overseas warehouse locations for China’s e-commerce exports in the context of the Belt and Road Initiative (B&R). We selected 62 countries along the B&R as pre-candidates for overseas warehouse locations and then evaluated the significance of each node in cross-border e-commerce for Chinese export products. Finally, 15 countries were identified as the optimal overseas warehouse locations for Chinese export products along the B&R. The results can provide reference for overseas warehouse deployment of Chinese cross-border e-commerce enterprises as well as the development and the construction of the B&R. Full article

Road freight transport involves many adversities, along with the growing effect of carbon dioxide transmitted by vehicles on the natural environment, greenhouse gas emissions, or extensive energy use. Within the smart mobility concept, the acknowledged management of enterprises’ relationships with customers within their service is profoundly determined by the deployment of compelling Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITSs) applications in forming united cooperation with the customers. The paper proposes selected ITS applications as an advancement of logistics customer service in road freight transport enterprises that is divided into a group of six applications which are critical within the area of vehicle support, improving the energy efficiency of transport and reducing the negative impact of transport on the natural environment, reducing transport time but increasing connectivity and comfort, as well as a group of ten different applications chosen as crucial for general management support and increasing accessibility, cohesiveness, and control in management processes in road freight transport enterprises. The study also presents the effect of ITS applications on logistics customer service as dependent on an alignment between the group of ITS applications and logistics resources of road freight transport enterprises. The model proposed in the paper was analyzed based on the survey data obtained from 164 road freight transport enterprises in Poland. Full article

The development of an economy and, in particular, the construction of new infrastructure as well as industrial enterprises creates demand for the road transport of oversized freight that exceeds the maximum permissible total mass of vehicle combinations with its share on the axles. Failure to comply with the defined technological processes and a deficiency in the assessment of permitting such forms of transportation can have a large adverse effect, predominantly on the lifetime of bridges in a road network, which can have international implications as well. There is no legislation adopted by the EU Member States, which would at least partially unify the authorisation procedures of these forms of transportation and, therefore, it results in problems when crossing borders and leads to differences related to the assessment of bridge passages. If there is no systematic inspection of this kind of transportation, it can lead to permanent damage of these bridges as well. Currently, and not only in Slovakia but also in other states, the assessment of bridge passage for certain routes is used for heavy and oversized transportation. It means that if we use 100 transports, 100 assessments of individual routes are needed, although some are the same routes or the same vehicles/vehicle combinations used for a number of transports. Thus, the authors designed a global assessment for bridge passage in relation to heavy and oversized road transport while verifying it in the conditions of the EU Member State from Central Europe–Slovakia. Roads are full of different types of vehicles/vehicle combinations for which the axle loads and distances of the axles (wheelbases) are important. Thus, there were vehicle/vehicle combinations parameters (big data) observed, for which the routes relating to heavy and/or oversized transportation were assessed from 1 January 2016 to 31 December 2020 in Slovakia. The global assessment of bridge passage introduces an entirely new approach within the procedure for obtaining a special permission for road use as well as within transport use itself. Given the low presence of freight with an abnormal axle load or enormous total mass, it is appropriate to define the limited conditions under which it would be possible to implement the global assessment in practice as well. Today, local administrations are faced with the presence of greater constraints in terms of the use of space and time. At the same time, large amount of data is available to fleet managers that can be used for controlling their fleets. This work is set in the context defined by sustainable city logistics, and information and communication technologies (ICTs), to formalize the three themes of the smart city (transport, ICTs and energy savings) in a single problem. Following this, the main purpose of the study is to propose a unified formulation of the basic problem of fleets, i.e., the traveling salesman problem (TSP), which explicitly includes the use of emerging information and communication technologies (e-ICTs) pointing out the learning process of path costs in urban delivery. This research explores the opportunity to extend the path cost formation with a within-day and day-to-day learning process, including the specification of the attributes provided by e-ICTs. As shown through a real test case, the research answers to queries coming from operators and collectivities to improve city liveability and sustainability. It includes both economic sustainability for companies/enterprises and environmental sustainability for local administrations (and collectivities). Besides contributing to reduce the times and kms travelled by commercial vehicles, as well as the interference of freight vehicles with other traffic components, it also contributes to road accident reduction (social sustainability). Therefore, after the re-exanimation of TSP, this paper presents the proposed unitary formulation and its benefits through the discussion of results obtained in a real case study. Finally, the possible innovation guided by e-ICT is pointed out. Full article

Wood transportation is an important source of greenhouse gas emissions, which should be considered when the carbon neutrality of the forest industry is of concern. The EU is dedicated to improving technology for a carbon-neutral development. This study investigates carbon neutrality by improving road freight transportation fleets consisting of various vehicle size combinations. The environmental emission and energy efficiency of a transportation fleet were analyzed in selected wood procurement regions of Stora Enso corporation (Finland). Based on the enterprise resource planning (ERP) data (2018–2020), the environmental emission efficiency increased by 11% via 76 t-vehicles compared 64 t vehicles. The maximum reduction in fuel consumption was 26% for 92 t vehicles, though this was achieved when operations were fully adjusted to the maximum weight limit. The wood-based energy efficiency measure (wood energy/transport energy) was a useful development indicator. It showed that the adapted fleets of transportation companies support a positive development for a carbon-neutral forestry. In respect to the current legal fleet (64, 68 and 76 t), the use of 76 t vehicles increased energy efficiency most effectively, by 50%, compared to 64 t vehicles in the best region. Currently, transportation service providers and their clients are using ERP information to tailor their energy efficiency metric and to implement them locally in the transportation monitoring systems. A three-year sensitivity analysis demonstrates that the technological development of management tools to improve transportation efficiency is essential for larger and heavier vehicle utilization. In the future, the whole wood supply chain from forest to factory will also be optimized with respect to energy efficiency criterion to ensure a low-carbon forest industry. Full article

Business owners are trying to enhance company value by developing growth strategies. Besides, they need to know what supports and drives the attractiveness to potential investors. Previously to determine company value, only financial drivers were used. These are essential drivers; however, even they do not reflect the overall situation. This paper proposes a novel approach for the solution of the problem of business valuation by taking into account both financial and non-financial drivers and by using several MCDM (multiple criteria decision making) methods simultaneously both for establishing weights and for the evaluation itself. World-leading road freight transport companies were selected for a case study. MCDM methods were used for determining the weights of the drivers and comparing the listed companies. Key drivers were identified, and the ranking of companies is provided. Full article

Freight transportation is becoming an increasingly critical activity for enterprises in a global world. Moreover, the distribution activities have a non-negligible impact on the environment, as well as on the citizens’ welfare. The classical vehicle routing problem (VRP) aims at designing routes that minimize the cost of serving customers using a given set of capacitated vehicles. Some VRP variants consider traveling times, either in the objective function (e.g., including the goal of minimizing total traveling time or designing balanced routes) or as constraints (e.g., the setting of time windows or a maximum time per route). Typically, the traveling time between two customers or between one customer and the depot is assumed to be both known in advance and static. However, in real life, there are plenty of factors (predictable or not) that may affect these traveling times, e.g., traffic jams, accidents, road works, or even the weather. In this work, we analyze the VRP with dynamic traveling times. Our work assumes not only that these inputs are dynamic in nature, but also that they are a function of the structure of the emerging routing plan. In other words, these traveling times need to be dynamically re-evaluated as the solution is being constructed. In order to solve this dynamic optimization problem, a learnheuristic-based approach is proposed. Our approach integrates statistical learning techniques within a metaheuristic framework. A number of computational experiments are carried out in order to illustrate our approach and discuss its effectiveness. Full article
