Introduction: The educational promotion of inclusive recreational spaces remains a key challenge for public policies, particularly in contexts where gaps persist between regulation and implementation. Objective: This study analyzed the impact of public policies on the promotion of inclusive recreational spaces in the canton of Milagro, focusing on accessibility, pedagogical use, and social inclusion. Methodology: A mixed-methods approach was applied, with a non-experimental, cross-sectional, descriptive–correlational design and an explanatory component. The sample included teachers, administrators, technical staff, and community members. Data were collected through questionnaires and semi-structured interviews. Results: Findings showed a favorable regulatory framework but only partial local implementation. Significant positive relationships were identified between policy implementation and accessibility (r = 0.62, p < 0.01), educational use of recreational spaces (r = 0.58, p < 0.01), and perceived inclusion (r = 0.65, p < 0.01). Although the existence of inclusive public policies was highly recognized (M = 3.98, SD = 0.71), lower scores were observed for their effective application (M = 3.14, SD = 0.92) and monitoring mechanisms (M = 2.89, SD = 0.95). Gaps were also identified in teacher training for inclusive recreation (M = 2.97) and in the adaptation of recreational spaces to functional diversity (M = 3.02). Discussion: Results align with previous studies emphasizing the need to integrate public policies, education, and territorial planning. Conclusions: Strengthening policy implementation and coordination is essential to consolidate inclusive recreational spaces with sustainable educational impact. Full article

Background/Objectives: Current literature regarding the efficacy of cannabis to reduce chronic pain intensity is mixed. Despite growing accessibility throughout the U.S., it is still unclear if the naturalistic use of recreational cannabis edible products is associated with decreases in pain intensity on days of use or longitudinally, and if these associations are dependent on the doses of delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD) being consumed. Methods: The trial (NCT03522324) from which these data were pulled was pre-registered in April 2018. Participants (N = 243; 56% female; mean age = 46 ± 12 years) with self-reported chronic low-back pain selected a recreational edible cannabis product to use exclusively, ad libitum, for 14 days. Labeled THC and CBD potency were used to determine product group: CBD-dominant (n = 97), THC + CBD (n = 112), or THC-dominant (n = 34). Participants completed daily surveys indicating current pain intensity (PROMIS; 0–10 scale), use or non-use of their product, and cannabinoid dose (THC and CBD). Results: Linear mixed effects showed a significant use × group interaction (p = 0.002), indicating that pain intensity was significantly lower on days of use in THC-dominant (b = −0.66, 95% CI [−0.94,−0.37]) and THC + CBD (b = −0.41, 95% CI [−0.57,−0.25]) groups compared to days when cannabis was not used. A significant group × time interaction (p = 0.02) indicated that pain intensity significantly decreased from day 1 to day 14 in those using THC + CBD products (b = −0.05, 95% CI [−0.07,−0.03]), with 36.6% of participants in the THC + CBD group experiencing ≥30% reduction in pain intensity from day 1 to day 14. Increasing doses of THC (b = −0.02, 95% CI [−0.04, −0.01]), not CBD (b = 0.003, 95% CI [−0.03, 0.01]), were associated with significantly lower pain intensity on days following product use, with increasing doses of CBD diminishing the impact of THC dose (b = 0.02, 95% CI [0.01, 0.04]). Conclusions: These findings indicate a complex relationship between THC, CBD, and pain intensity associated with the naturalistic use of recreational cannabis edible products. Lower daily pain intensity was associated with the use of products containing THC; however, dose models indicate that this association may be attenuated at higher doses of CBD. Additionally, only products containing relatively equal amounts of THC and CBD were associated with lower pain intensity after 14 days of observation. Full article

This paper addresses the geomorphic response of an engineered Chicago beach to a >1.5 m rise in Lake Michigan’s base water level, from 2013 to 2020. Topographic monitoring data acquired since 2012 and subsurface geophysical data collected in 2022 are integrated to explore the roles of lakefront infrastructure and beach topographic development on sedimentary dynamics, beach morphologic development, and stratigraphic architecture. While conceptual models of coastal geomorphology infer upward and landward beach-profile translation with lake-level rise, a high degree of along-shore variance occurs within pocket beaches. This stems from infrastructure-related modifications of storm hydrodynamics and scour patterns, close to shore, and backshore terrain physiography. The studied beach evolved contrary to how regional littoral drift patterns would have suggested, with erosion most severe along the embayment’s downdrift end, a product of infrastructure-induced scour and the reduced capacity for sediment retention through overwash accretion. Documented geomorphic patterns with lake-level rise are manifested in subsurface imaging data from the lake-level highstand, accordingly, providing a guide to more regional paleo-reconstruction. Great Lakes urban pocket beaches buffer shoreline infrastructure, offer recreational terrains, and support dune ecosystems of value to migrating shorebirds. Understanding their geomorphology benefits coastal managers looking to mitigate impacts of future climate and lake-level change. Full article

The paper addresses the intersection between modern built heritage preservation and Climate-Aided Design (CADe) processes in fragile coastal Mediterranean contexts. The study focuses on the city of Beirut in Lebanon, part of the Eastern Mediterranean and Middle East (EMME) region and considered a climate change hotspot facing extreme challenges. Rapid urbanization and socio-political instability, especially during the twentieth century, have undermined the city’s ability to mitigate and adapt to future climate change scenarios. Moreover, Beirut’s modern built heritage faces a constant threat of demolition due to the absence of protective legislation, compounded by aggressive real-estate development ambitions. The hypothesis is that the integration of climatic data and regenerative design with modern cultural heritage classification frameworks can aid the preservation process, drive a more adaptive and inclusive approach to urban regeneration, and inform legislative integration of climate adaptation in conservation frameworks. To test this hypothesis, a multi-scalar case-study-based methodology is adopted using a combination of digital tools to assess and analyze the current and future impacts of climate change on two main case studies. First, the St. George Hotel & Bay, one of the first reinforced concrete recreational buildings in the city, was built during the French Mandate (1920–1946) and is vulnerable to sea-level rise, flooding, and demolition. Second, the Beirut City Center “The Egg”, a Brutalist structure built during Beirut’s modernist “golden era”, which is prone to structural deterioration and demolition. The main objective is to highlight 20th-century built heritage as part of Beirut’s spatial narrative worthy of conservation and rehabilitation by analyzing their capability to adapt to, mitigate, or benefit from future environmental risk. Ultimately, the study explores their potential to catalyze climate-resilient urban regeneration practices in the city. Results show that the integration of current and future forecast environmental analyses informed early preservation and intervention decision-making stages to position 20th-century modern built heritage as an asset to climate action in addition to being a socio-cultural and economic asset. Action recognition has emerged as a critical area of research within the realm of computer vision, driven by the increasing demand for intelligent human–machine systems capable of understanding and interpreting human behaviors in the real world. The ability to decipher intricate details of human actions holds immense potential to improve system design, predictive modeling, data-informed decision-making, and real-time operational improvements across a wide variety of domains. Some examples of applications range from surveillance and real-time management of public spaces and infrastructure systems, to development of predictive modeling and robotic systems for individualized healthcare interventions, to implementing effective human–computer interaction in both professional and recreational settings. This paper provides a comprehensive survey of the current state of action recognition, focusing specifically on three open-world challenges: the integration of multimodalities, the ethical and social implications of these technologies, and the utilization of feedback mechanisms to enhance model performance. We delve into the evolution of action recognition, from early feature-based approaches to the deep learning revolution, emphasizing how the incorporation of multiple sensory modalities—such as visual, audio, and depth data as well as other cues—has advanced the field. Furthermore, we examine the ethical challenges associated with deploying these technologies in the public domain, particularly regarding privacy, bias, and societal impact, and discuss the need for responsible development and regulation. The third focus of the paper is the use of top-down and bottom-up feedback mechanisms within deep learning architectures, exploring how these strategies can mimic human cognitive processes to improve accuracy and reliability in action recognition systems. By identifying current gaps and proposing future research directions, this paper aims to inspire continued innovation in this dynamic and impactful field for intelligent systems. Full article

Riparian zones provide vital ecosystem services, including water purification, soil aeration, and recreation. Anthropogenic activities and invasive plant species threaten native vegetation and alter fire patterns. This study investigates the impact of invasive vegetation cover (IVC) on riparian fire patterns in Otay Valley Regional Park, San Diego, California, using Sentinel-2 imagery to analyze 13 fires that occurred in 2019. The impact of IVC on fire patterns was assessed using high-resolution Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) and Differenced Normalized Burn Ratio (dNBR) from 2019 to 2023. We found nuanced fire dynamics relationship driven by species-specific traits. Results showed that post-fire NDVI was consistently highest in areas with <25% IVC, suggesting more stable vegetation recovery in native areas. In contrast, areas with >75% IVC had high NDVI variability and greater canopy loss, particularly where species such as Melilotus albus and mixed annual forbs dominated. IVC was evaluated descriptively rather than as an inferential predictor due to the small number of fire counts. Descriptive patterns indicate that post-fire vegetation response varied by dominant invasive species, with resilient taxa such as Arundo donax, Tamarix ramosissima, and Eucalyptus spp. showing evidence of rapid or sustained recovery. These findings highlight the complexity of fire dynamics in invaded riparian systems and the importance of species-specific monitoring. We recommend integrating remote sensing with targeted invasive vegetation species management to improve fire resilience and ecological integrity in urban riparian corridors. Full article

Clear-cutting often causes negative public reactions due to its visual impact, especially in recreational forests. Understanding how people perceive early regeneration stages may support more socially acceptable management practices. This pilot study investigated how young adults visually perceive early forest regeneration after clear-cutting, with a particular focus on gender differences and attention-attracting elements. Field research was conducted in October in central Poland on a 0.97 ha site with Scots pine regeneration. Participants were studied using Tobii Pro Glasses 2. Over 950,000 visual events were recorded, including approx. 9000 fixations and 900 saccades. Analyses included Areas of Interest, heat maps, and fixation and saccade metrics. Women tended to show longer fixation durations than men in this pilot study (602 ms vs. 458 ms; p < 0.001), particularly in clear-cut regeneration areas, where median values were more than 35% higher. They also had shorter and more variable saccades. Visual attention was concentrated on the boundaries between mature forest and regeneration areas, and on elements that reduced the perceived “nakedness” of clear cuts, such as undergrowth and young trees. These patterns suggest that structural and compositional characteristics of regenerating forest landscapes affect visual attention. The results highlight the potential of eye-tracking methods for studying responses to forest management and landscape perception. Full article

Marine microbiomes play an important role in coastal marine environments. This study examined microbial communities in beach waters and sands at six recreational beaches to identify the fingerprints of anthropogenic influences. Samples were collected from four metropolitan areas in the U.S., within Miami, Florida; Seattle, Washington; Newport Beach, California and in Australia within Adelaide. Samples were analyzed for enterococci and fungi by culture. Reverse-transcription droplet digital PCR (RT-ddPCR) was performed for pepper mild mottle virus (PMMoV). Next-generation sequencing was carried out to elucidate the microbial diversity and predict antibiotic resistance. Enterococci concentrations surpassed the U.S. EPA marine water quality guideline value in the seawater samples from Seattle and Adelaide, and fungal concentration exceeded the WHO guideline in the sand of North Star Beach, California. Low levels of PMMoV were detected in seawater and sand from multiple locations. Chloroflexi and Acidobacteria were the most abundant bacterial phyla in sand, while Marinimicrobia and Cyanobacteria dominated in seawater. Beach sand had higher bacterial and fungal diversity than seawater, of which the most abundant fungal genera include taxa of potential pathogens. Predicted antibiotic resistance genes showed high levels of beta-lactam and multidrug resistance genes in all samples. This study contributes to the understanding of anthropogenic impact on the coastal environment, emphasizing the need for human health protection measures. Full article

Objectives: We aimed to systematically review and meta-analyze the impact of COVID-19 infection on cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF): (1) within-athlete (the same participants before and after infection), and (2) between-athlete (infected vs. healthy reference participants). Methods: In this systematic review (PROSPERO Registry: CRD42024540430) we included observational studies enrolling recreational or competitive athletes ≥18 years old with laboratory confirmation of SARS-CoV-2 infection. The primary outcome was change in relative maximal oxygen uptake (VO2max). Secondary outcomes included changes in absolute VO2max, maximal ventilation (VEmax), and maximal heart rate (HRmax). We searched Embase, PubMed, Medline, Scopus, and Web of Science up to August 9th, 2025. Risk of bias was assessed with the JBI critical appraisal tool. Meta-analyses were performed with a random-effects model. Results: Twelve studies enrolling a total of 1595 participants met the eligibility criteria. COVID-19 infection was associated with lower relative VO2max (MD = −1.83 mL·kg−1·min−1; 95%CI [−3.16, −0.49]; p = 0.007; I2 = 54%) and absolute VO2max (MD = −0.15 L·min−1; 95%CI [−0.29, −0.01]; p = 0.03; I2 = 0%). COVID-19 infection was associated with lower VEmax (MD = −7.99 L·min−1; 95%CI [−12.94, −3.04]; p = 0.002; I2 = 0%) but not with HRmax (MD = −0.34 bpm; 95%CI [−1.54, 0.86]; p = 0.58; I2 = 0%). High heterogeneity of included studies was addressed with subgroup analyses. The risk of bias in most studies was high. The certainty of evidence was very low for each outcome. Conclusions: COVID-19 infection in athletes was associated with reduced VO2max and VEmax. The relationships were highly dependent on the quality of the studies. CRF and athlete profile should be considered when making shared decisions regarding safe return to sport after infection. Full article

Background: Chemsex, or sexualized drug use, exists along a continuum ranging from non-problematic, consensual recreational practice across diverse populations to problematic behaviors linked with clinical vulnerabilities, substance dependence, or compulsive disorders. Within nursing practice, understanding this spectrum is essential to mitigate healthcare-related stigma. Objective: To map and synthesize evidence on stigma and attitudes among nurses regarding chemsex, identifying implications for practice and research. Methods: A scoping review was conducted following the Joanna Briggs Institute methodology and PRISMA-ScR guidelines. Searches were performed across PubMed/MEDLINE, Scopus, Web of Science, CINAHL, EMBASE, and LILACS. Studies involving nurses or healthcare teams focused on stigma, attitudes, or related constructs in chemsex care were included. Data underwent descriptive and thematic synthesis. Results: Six studies met the inclusion criteria, showing substantial heterogeneity. Only one focused exclusively on nurses. Stigma and attitudes were rarely assessed explicitly, emerging instead as underlying factors influencing clinical practice, communication, and patient engagement. Key themes included the necessity for non-judgmental care, significant gaps in knowledge and training, variability in clinical practice, and the impact of organizational barriers. A schematic representation was developed to illustrate the interrelationships between stigma, knowledge, professional attitudes, and structural factors influencing healthcare practice. Conclusions: This review positions stigma as a central mechanism influencing nursing care in chemsex contexts. The findings underscore critical gaps in nursing-specific evidence and emphasize the need for targeted training, validated measurement tools, and integrated care models. Strengthening stigma-informed, patient-centered approaches is essential to improve care delivery and health outcomes for this population. Full article

We performed a collective case study, employing a qualitative, interpretative, and exploratory approach. Information was produced through semi-structured interviews with leaders of four national associations. The information was examined using inductive thematic analysis. In general, parent association representatives largely described school violence as a loss of parental and pedagogical authority, weakening of the family–school bond, centralized school administration, and social vulnerability factors, intensified by the psychosocial impact of the COVID-19 pandemic lockdowns. The interviewees emphasized preventive and community-based approaches, including strengthening family involvement, incorporating school climate specialists, and implementing educational and recreational activities. Overall, the interviews show that parent association representatives tended to regard violence as a multisystemic phenomenon that, according to their accounts, requires joint efforts involving families, schools, the state, and communities rather than punitive or individualized approaches. This study investigated the impact of recreational use on trails in the Atlantic Forest (Ubatuba Municipality, São Paulo State, Brazil) using physical, chemical and geochemical indicators. Five trails with different morphological characteristics were selected, and paired samples were collected from the trail surface (TR) and trail-side slope (TA). The statistical approach combined local analyses for each trail with global clustering (n = 19) using Student’s t-test, along with multivariate modeling through Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and Pearson correlation. The analysis included physical attributes (bulk density, particle size and porosity), chemical attributes (pH, organic matter and macronutrients) and geochemical compositions (major oxides and trace elements determined by XRF). The overall results reveal systematic compaction in the trail surface (TR), with bulk density increasing from 1.32 g/cm3 (TA) to 1.37 g/cm3 (TR) (p = 0.038), and total porosity decreasing from 47.26% to 45.34% (p = 0.016). In contrast, the geochemical oxide composition (SiO2, Al2O3, Fe2O3) remained stable (p > 0.05), indicating the resilience of the mineral matrix. However, significant local dynamics (p < 0.05) in K2O and MgO were observed in more preserved trails, associated with surface compaction and fragmentation of the litter layer, and phosphorus showed strong dependence on organic matter (r = 0.85). Multivariate analysis indicates that degradation is predominantly physical and micromorphological at the local scale, with bulk density and porosity being the most sensitive indicators for environmental monitoring. Introduction: Biological invasions constitute one of the main threats to freshwater ecosystems, causing significant ecological changes through the introduction of exotic species that compete with or prey upon native species. In Portugal, the introduction and spread of exotic species in lotic and lentic ecosystems, such as pike (Esox lucius), European catfish (Silurus glanis), and largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides), all top predators, may have a big impact on autochthonous species. In contrast, bleak (Alburnus alburnus), European perch (Perca fluviatilis), and common carp (Cyprinus carpio) compete aggressively for food resources. In the Sousa River basin, gudgeon (Gobio lozanoi) is considered an exotic species with potential ecological impact, with the minnow (Phoxinus phoxinus) stand having been recently identified in Portugal and, so far, recorded only in this river basin, and not yet being classified as an invasive species in Portugal. Public knowledge regarding invasive aquatic biodiversity remains a significant bottleneck for conservation. Because recreational angling is a prominent dispersal vector, initiatives that directly target this community are relevant. Objective: The aim is to carry out a bibliographic review on the exotic ichthyofauna species present in the Sousa River, with special focus on the invasion potential of the minnow (P. phoxinus). Methodology: The literature review was conducted based on the ScienceDirect, Springer Nature Link, and Fauna Norvegica databases, selecting publications between 2006 and 2025 concerning relevant studies on the potentially invasive characteristics of the minnow (P. phoxinus). The methodology is based on the analysis of studies regarding the impacts caused on riparian ecosystems. Results: The species P. phoxinus presents a generalist diet and high adaptive capacity, allowing it to colonise new habitats and compete aggressively with native species for trophic resources. Its presence is associated with negative impacts on brown trout populations (Salmo trutta), reducing growth and productivity, especially in mountain ecosystems. Increased species density also causes a significant decrease in benthic macroinvertebrate biodiversity. Studies conducted in the Douro basin indicate that the arrival of minnow in Portugal resulted from human action, probably associated with its use as live bait in recreational fishing. Conservation programmes use diverse tactics to bridge the awareness gap. Recent initiatives feature electrofishing demonstrations to visually differentiate species, theatrical performances, and even culinary show-cooking events using invasive predators like the European catfish to promote harvesting. Conclusions: The potential transition of P. phoxinus into an exotic and invasive species may be associated with the ecological pressure exerted on native communities, particularly through competition for trophic resources, highlighting the need to assess its dispersion in the Sousa basin and its impacts on fish fauna and benthic macroinvertebrates. It is important to do more sampling to understand its real distribution in the Sousa Basin. Additionally is important to explain to recreational anglers and the general population the impacts of fish transfer and the adverse effects of invasive species on freshwater Portuguese ecosystems. Background: Recreational mini-football is associated with a high incidence of lower-limb injuries, largely driven by neuromuscular deficits and insufficient exposure to structured preventive training. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of a hybrid injury-prevention program combining the FIFA 11+ protocol with customized neuromuscular interventions on functional performance and injury-related risk factors. Methods: Forty male recreational mini-football players were included in a retrospective analysis of data collected during the routine implementation of a 12-week hybrid preventive training program. Participants were allocated to an intervention group (n = 20) or control group (n = 20) according to routine training practices rather than randomization. The intervention was performed twice weekly. Outcome measures included lower-limb strength (Kineo system), dynamic balance (Y-Balance Test), functional hop performance (Single Hop and Side Hop tests), and agility/change-of-direction ability (Illinois and 505 tests). Results: The intervention group demonstrated significantly greater improvements in lower-limb peak force across all muscle groups (all adjusted p < 0.001), as well as in single-leg hop, side hop, and agility/change-of-direction performance (all adjusted p < 0.001) compared to controls. No significant changes were observed in dynamic balance outcomes. Conclusions: A hybrid neuromuscular training program combining FIFA 11+ with customized exercises was associated with improvements in lower-limb strength, hop performance, and agility/change-of-direction ability in recreational mini-football players. These findings suggest that integrating customized exercises into standardized training programs may enhance functional performance and positively influence modifiable factors associated with injury risk. Introduction: Synthetic cathinones (SC) are an emerging class of neuroactive contaminants increasingly detected in aquatic systems due to their widespread recreational use. Their continuous release at ng–µg L−1 levels is particularly concerning, as these compounds are specifically designed to alter neural function, raising the likelihood of subtle yet ecologically relevant effects in non-target organisms. Among them, 3,4-methylenedioxypyrovalerone (MDPV) is one of the most-reported SC in wastewater and surface waters. Nevertheless, its chiral nature has been largely overlooked in ecotoxicological studies, despite growing evidence that enantiomers can differ markedly in biological activity, potentially leading to underestimated environmental risks. Objective: The ecotoxicological impact of racemic MDPV ((R,S)-MDPV) and its separate enantiomers ((R)-MDPV and (S)-MDPV) were examined using zebrafish (Danio rerio) as a model, focusing on survival and embryonic development. Methodology: Zebrafish embryos, at approximately 3-hours post-fertilization (hpf), were exposed over 96 h to environmentally relevant concentrations of MDPV forms (0.18−2.8 μg L−1). Each treatment and control group included 50 animals distributed across 5 replicates. Mortality was assessed at multiple developmental stages (7, 24, 48, 72, and 96 h), along with cumulative mortality. Developmental endpoints included spontaneous movements (24 h), heartbeat (48 h), and hatching rate (48 and 72 h), quantified using stereomicroscopy and video analysis. Results: MDPV showed concentration and enantioselective effects, with (S)-MDPV being the most toxic. Behavioral and cardiac responses varied across forms, while hatching depended on concentration and time without a clear enantioselective pattern. Conclusions: MDPV disrupts early zebrafish development, impairing survival and embryonic development in a concentration-dependent and enantioselective manner, with (S)-MDPV demonstrating greater toxicity. These findings emphasize the importance of considering chirality in the environmental risk assessment of psychoactive contaminants such as SC, as enantiomer-specific effects may influence organism fitness, survival, and broader ecological outcomes.
