This study investigated associations between a yearlong genre-based writing curriculum and students’ writing and self-efficacy outcomes. The curriculum had two stages: first, teaching genre elements without requiring use of sources and citations, and then integrating information from readings. Participants included 340 students and 3 teachers across 6th to 8th grades in a rural Title I middle school. Using a quasi-experimental, one-group pretest–posttest design with repeated measures, analysis showed significant improvements in writing quality across argumentative, compare-and-contrast, and narrative genres for all grades. Improvement patterns varied by grade and genre; self-efficacy and affect results were mixed—gains appeared in specific areas, but overall, self-efficacy decreased when reading was incorporated. Findings suggest the yearlong approach enhances writing quality but may require additional strategies to maintain student motivation. Full article

Background/Objectives: Specific Learning Disorders are lifelong neurodevelopmental conditions that persist in adulthood, yet research has traditionally focused on children. In adults, there is significant heterogeneity in cognitive profiles and a lack of consensus on how to operationalize these disorders. This study aims to map the variability in cognitive functioning in university students with Specific Learning Disorders and investigate whether cognitive profiles differ across diagnostic categories and comorbidities. Methods: A retrospective analysis was conducted on the clinical documentation of 166 university students with a diagnosis of Specific Learning Disorders. Participants were categorized into three subgroups: predominant reading disorder, predominant arithmetic disorder, and mixed learning disorder. Cognitive functioning was assessed using Wechsler scales indices. Data were analyzed using linear mixed-effects models and Latent Profile Analysis. Results: Across the sample, reasoning abilities were significantly higher than cognitive efficiency, with working memory consistently emerging as a core weakness. The mixed-disorder group exhibited the lowest cognitive scores and the greatest working memory deficits. Latent Profile Analysis identified two distinct latent subgroups: a “Low Profile” characterized by weaker working memory and a “High Profile” characterized by stronger reasoning and balanced efficiency. Diagnostic labels were only partially aligned with these profiles; while the mixed-disorder group was overrepresented in the “Low Profile,” substantial intra-individual variability existed across all diagnostic categories. Conclusions: The findings suggest that traditional categorical labels for Specific Learning Disorders have limited explanatory power in adulthood, given the high heterogeneity of cognitive functioning. Cognitive weaknesses, particularly in working memory, persist even in high-achieving university students. Clinical and educational support should shift from a label-based approach toward a dimensional, profile-based model to better address the unique strengths and vulnerabilities of adults with Specific Learning Disorders. (1) Background: The “Bider” marking refers to the symmetrical black stripes distributed on the shoulder blades of Dun Mongolian horses, representing an ancestral trait of significant genetic value. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying its formation remain unclear. This study aims to elucidate the molecular basis of these markings by comparing transcriptomic differences in skin tissues from variously pigmented areas of Mongolian horses’ “Bider” patterns. (2) Methods: Using three Dun Mongolian horses as subjects, skin tissue samples were collected from their shoulders (dark-marked and light-marked areas), dorsal midline, and croup regions for transcriptome sequencing. Differentially expressed genes were identified based on sequencing data, followed by Gene Ontology (GO) functional annotation and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) pathway enrichment analysis. Key findings were validated through quantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR). (3) Results: The sequencing yielded approximately 893 million high-quality clean reads, with an overall alignment rate exceeding 96%. A total of 140 to 775 differentially expressed genes were identified. GO enrichment analysis revealed that these genes were significantly enriched in biological processes related to pigment metabolism, skin and hair follicle development, signal transduction (including calcium and cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP) signaling), and immune regulation. KEGG analysis further indicated that multiple pathways closely associated with pigment regulation, including the calcium signaling pathway, tyrosine metabolism, cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP) signaling pathway, and melanoma pathway, were significantly enriched across different tissue comparison groups, suggesting their potential key roles in coat color phenotype formation. The reliability of the sequencing data was corroborated by the results of qRT-PCR validation. (4) Conclusions: This study conducted a transcriptome analysis of skin samples from various pigmented regions of the Dun Mongolian horse’s Bider marking, revealing that the formation of this marking is associated with the differential expression of numerous genes and is co-regulated by multiple pigment-related signaling pathways. This article examines the interaction between phenomenological illness theory and magical realism in Stephen King’s The Green Mile. It uses ideas from phenomenological psychopathology and illness narrative theory to explain how King presents supernatural events through a restrained and matter-of-fact narrative register. Instead of considering magical realism as a genre or a mere literary device, the article views magical realism as a stylistic mode that is produced by the tension between realistic descriptions and unexplained supernatural moments. Through a close reading of King’s prose, especially his diction, narrative voice and bodily descriptions, this study shows that John Coffey’s healing acts represent the otherwise incommunicable experience of suffering. These supernatural events make visible forms of institutional violence such as prison brutality, racial injustice and execution, which are often invisible in traditional realist narratives. This article also argues that magical realism is not limited to Latin American literature but can function effectively in American popular fiction. Finally, the findings suggest that, while magical realism may be helpful in exposing injustice and suffering, it may also have the danger of aestheticizing pain rather than fully transforming it into political critique. Background: Problematic Internet use (PIU) among adolescents has emerged as a significant public health concern, associated with the types of online activities and underlying psychological processes rather than screen time alone. Methods: This cross-sectional study included 750 adolescents (46.4% female) with a mean age of 15.39 years (SD = 1.76; range = 13–19) recruited from 7th and 8th grade primary school students and secondary school students in Split-Dalmatia County (Croatia). The study investigated the associations between specific online activities, psychological variables, and PIU using hierarchical regression and multiple mediation analyses. Results: Results revealed that time spent online remains the most strongly associated with PIU. While streaming and online shopping showed significant associations with problematic use, reading and browsing for information did not. Stress and loneliness were identified as variables associated with higher that significantly statistically mediate the relationships between online engagement and PIU, whereas emotional competence functioned as a protective factor, particularly in relation to social media use. These findings support theoretical models that conceptualize PIU as a maladaptive coping strategy for psychological distress. Conclusions: Based on these findings, prevention efforts should move beyond simple screen-time reduction and focus on strengthening adolescents’ emotional competence, stress management, and self-regulatory skills to promote healthier and more adaptive patterns of digital engagement. Background: Hepatitis E virus (HEV) is an increasingly recognized cause of acute viral hepatitis in Thailand as the burden of hepatitis A, B, and C has declined. HEV is a positive-sense RNA virus in the family Hepeviridae with three major open reading frames encoding replication proteins (ORF1), the capsid protein (ORF2), and an accessory protein involved in viral egress (ORF3). Unlike highly endemic regions where genotypes 1 and 2 are linked to waterborne outbreaks, infections in Thailand are reported mainly as sporadic cases associated with zoonotic transmission, most commonly genotype 3. Objectives: This review summarizes the epidemiology, transmission routes, and public health implications of HEV infection in Thailand. Methods: Peer-reviewed studies on HEV seroprevalence, molecular epidemiology, and transmission in Thailand were identified through PubMed using combinations of the keywords “HEV” and “Thailand”. Two investigators independently screened titles, abstracts, and full texts. Eligible studies were synthesized qualitatively. Results: Earlier studies suggested low population exposure, but more recent evidence indicates substantial cumulative risk. A nationwide survey among blood donors reported anti-HEV IgG seroprevalence of about 30%, with geographic variation and increasing prevalence with age. Detection of HEV RNA in pigs, slaughterhouse environments, and retail pork products, together with links to raw or undercooked pork consumption, supports pigs as the principal reservoir and foodborne exposure as an important route. Transfusion-associated infection has also been documented. Conclusions: In Thailand, HEV infection is linked mainly to zoonotic and foodborne transmission involving genotype 3. Stronger surveillance, food safety measures, and risk-based blood safety policies are needed. Full article

Dark current represents a fundamental limiting factor in photodiode performance, establishing the noise floor and constraining detectivity in low-light applications. This comprehensive literature review examines publications covering the physical mechanisms underlying dark current generation and diverse techniques employed for its reduction. Covered mechanisms include diffusion current, Shockley–Read–Hall (SRH) generation–recombination, trap-assisted tunneling, band-to-band tunneling, and surface leakage, each examined with respect to its physical origin and characteristic signatures. Reduction strategies are categorized into thermal management approaches, surface passivation techniques including atomic-layer-deposited aluminum oxide (ALD Al2O3), guard ring architectures (attached, floating, and combined configurations), gettering and defect engineering methods, doping profile optimization, bias voltage management, and advanced device architectures such as pinned photodiodes and black silicon structures. A classification table organizes all the reviewed literature by material system, reduction technique, and key findings. Special emphasis is placed on silicon, germanium, III–V compounds, and emerging material photodiodes relevant to near-infrared detection, CMOS imaging, single-photon avalanche diodes (SPADs), and Time-of-Flight (ToF) applications. Urban soundscape management is a central challenge to the livability and sustainability of cities and requires approaches that complement level indicators with frameworks capable of integrating context, use and experience. In this framework, the present work applies a multilayer methodology to the Old Town of Bilbao, understood as a useful case study to explore the applicability of soundscape reading in historic centers with intense coexistence of commercial, hospitality and catering uses, pedestrian, logistical and cultural uses. The methodology is organized into two phases. The first focuses on the recording and documentation of control points and routes through sound fieldwork, perceptual descriptions and homogeneous systematization of information. From this corpus, a qualified sound map and a first visual characterization of the sound identity are elaborated. The second phase presented in this article, consists of the interpretative synthesis of the corpus through five analytical dimensions and the preparation of fragments and sound sequences conceived for future application through reactivated listening. The results are presented at three levels: (1) a traceable documentary corpus of records, files and synthetic representations; (2) a comparative reading by dimensions that identifies spatial contrasts between interior, exterior and perimeter, as well as relationships between urban form, uses, persistence, masking and salience; and (3) a set of operational audio materials prepared for subsequent comparison with inhabitants and users. In a transversal way, type–token reading distinguishes between the diversity of sounds and dominance by repetition. The article does not yet carry out participatory validation of these materials; its contribution consists of proposing and applying a traceable analytical protocol as a basis for future phases of social contrast and applied discussion. This article addresses a current point of contention in the field of single-molecule/single-particle tracking, as well as the relevant literature, and supplements it with some published cell-based experiments to illustrate our conclusions and known theorems. We attempt to explain the controversy surrounding the differing biophysical and cell biological results of studies on the individual molecule and those “at the single-molecule level” as well as at the level of many molecules in such a way that even readers who are unfamiliar with the subject can understand it without having to read all the mathematical, physical, and biophysical references. Given this abundance of studies in the literature, it is obvious that genuine single-molecule studies are urgently needed, i.e., single-molecule studies that focus on increasing the sensitivity of the temporal resolution of single-molecule measurements and not just on spatial resolution. In late Ming China, landscape (shanshui 山水) painting could function not only as a scenic representation but also as a pictorial means of making sacred space perceptible. This article examines Wu Bin’s hanging scroll Fanghu Tu 方壺圖 (1626; Palace Museum, Beijing) and asks how the painting renders Daoist sacred space visible through relations of distance, access, concealment, and uneven disclosure. To avoid treating “Daoist aesthetics” as a general label, the analysis uses schema and pictorial organization as limited descriptive terms for the structuring of spatial experience within the image. The close reading identifies two recurrent pictorial formations brought into relation in Fanghu Tu: a sea-boundary, distant-view configuration that emphasizes separation and delay, and a pavilion-centered enclosure that produces a more concentrated middle field. It then shows how layered waves and broken shoreline, cloud and mist, middle-zone enclosure, and the thinning legibility of the upper peaks prevent the scene from stabilizing into a single resolved destination. Read in relation to late Ming discussions of cultivated “strangeness” (qi 奇) in landscape painting, these features suggest that Daoist sacred space in Fanghu Tu takes shape as an uneven and mediated experience, structured through provisional concentration, interrupted visibility, and renewed distance. The article argues that late Ming landscape painting could render Daoist-inflected sacred spatial experience visible not only through iconography, but also through the pictorial distribution of visibility, access, and reorientation. To investigate the influence of working fluid composition on the thermo-hydraulic performance of plate heat exchangers (PHEs) under single-phase sensible heat transfer conditions, a three-dimensional steady-state numerical model was developed for a transverse corrugated channel with a chevron angle of 60°. The governing equations were solved using the finite volume method implemented in ANSYS Fluent, in conjunction with the standard k–ε turbulence model. The analysis considered pure refrigerants R134a and R245fa, as well as their mixtures with mass ratios of 0.2, 0.5, and 0.8, with thermophysical properties assumed to be temperature-independent constants. The results indicate that as the mass fraction of R134a decreases from 1.0 to 0, the heat transfer coefficient (h) decreases from 1025 to 815 W/(m2·K), primarily attributed to the combined effects of reduced thermal conductivity and increased viscosity. Among the investigated cases, the R134a/R245fa mixture with a mass ratio of 0.8 provides the most favorable performance trade-off, exhibiting a heat transfer coefficient only 3.0% lower than that of pure R134a while achieving a 12.5% reduction in flow resistance compared with pure R245fa. Furthermore, the heat transfer coefficient is found to be weakly affected by heat flux in the range of 8000–20,000 W/m2; in contrast, increasing the mass flow rate from 0.001 to 0.005 kg/s enhances heat transfer coefficient by 65.1%, accompanied by a significant increase in pressure drop. Comparisons with established single-phase correlations for corrugated channels show average deviations of 6.5% for the Nusselt number and 3.8% for the friction factor. The present study provides useful guidance for working fluid selection and operational optimization of PHEs in applications dominated by sensible heat transfer, such as specific stages of heat pump cycles and medium-temperature waste heat recovery. A Framework to Assess Food Insecurity Responses Among Colleges and Universities

Background/Objectives: Food insecurity affects college students at nearly twice the rate of US households, with documented impacts on student academic performance, physical and mental health, and socialization. While frameworks exist to conceptualize general food insecurity and food insecurity in specific contexts, researchers and practitioners lack resources to guide system-level responses to food insecurity on college and university campuses and assess those responses. In this study, we aimed to develop and validate a simple yet comprehensive framework for assessing food insecurity responses within the context of higher education. Methods: We adapted an eight-phase process for framework development: (1) map selected data sources within the multidisciplinary literature, (2) read and categorize selected sources, (3) identify and name concepts, (4) deconstruct and categorize concepts based on their features, (5) group similar concepts together, (6) synthesize concepts into a framework, (7) validate the framework using expert panel review, and (8) revise as necessary. Results: The developed Campus Food Aid Self-assessment (CFAS) framework consists of six dimensions: Student Services and Supports; Involvement; Advocacy; Awareness and Culture Efforts; Education and Training; and Research, Scholarship, and Creative Works. Expert panelists (n = 7) reviewed the proposed framework and confirmed the clarity, comprehensiveness, and representativeness of the proposed dimensions, conceptual definitions, and operational variables. Conclusions: With a comprehensive yet accessible structure, the CFAS framework supports the development, coordination, and improvement of campus-based strategies to address food insecurity and support positive student outcomes. Shared Microbial Blueprints Underlying Symbiotic Plasticity in Desert Plant Endophytes

The desert ecosystem harbors a resilient microbial community that sustains plant life under extreme stress. Understanding the endophytic microbiota of desert flora provides key insights into how these microorganisms enable plant survival and maintain ecological balance in arid landscapes. To date, the endophytic bacterial communities of dominant desert plants in the Arabian Peninsula have not been comprehensively characterized. Here, we investigated the endophytic microbiota of five co-adapted desert species, namely, Schweinfurthia papilionacea, Sesuvium verrucosum, Ochtocloa compressa, Helianthemum nummularium, and Convolvulus arvensis. These plants coexist in hyper-arid habitats and exhibit exceptional tolerance to drought, salinity, and nutrient scarcity. We hypothesized that, despite their phylogenetic divergence, these plants host functionally convergent microbial communities shaped by desert selection pressures. Using 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing, we obtained 3.4 million high-quality reads from 25 samples. Clustering at 97% similarity revealed 35 phyla and 17 dominant genera, highlighting notable microbial richness and ecological complexity. Alpha-diversity indices showed comparable species richness across hosts, while beta-diversity indicated community differentiation driven by environmental filtering. The dominant phyla included Pseudomonadota, Actinomycetota, Cyanobacteriota, and Bacillota, reflecting microbial adaptation to extreme desert conditions. Functional pathway prediction revealed enrichment of genes associated with DNA repair and protein turnover, suggesting metabolic flexibility and enhanced survival under stress. Overall, this study provides a comparative metagenomic insight into the endophytic bacterial communities of five desert plant species, uncovering a consistent pattern of functional convergence across diverse hosts. The findings suggest the presence of shared functional traits among the endophytic microbiota examined here, offering preliminary evidence for microbial contributions to plant resilience in arid environments.
