The gross benefit of feeding multi-species probiotics has been reported, but the effect on the gut microbiota in pre-weaned dairy calves has not been elucidated. To address this gap, a randomized controlled trial was conducted in California, USA, to investigate the effect of feeding probiotics on the fecal microbiota of pre-weaned dairy calves. A total of 30 neonatal calves were randomly assigned to either the probiotic (PRO) or control (CON) treatment. Fecal samples were collected at four age timepoints: days 7, 14, 21, and 42. Fecal bacterial population was analyzed using 16S rRNA amplicon sequencing. Differential abundance analysis was conducted to investigate the difference between the PRO and CON treatments, and diarrheic and non-diarrheic calves in each PRO and CON group. The PRO group had decreased Clostridium perfringens and Fusobacterium varium compared to the CON at 7 days of age. At 7 days of age, diarrheic calves in CON had more abundant F. varium compared to non-diarrheic calves, but there was no difference between diarrheic and non-diarrheic calves in the PRO group. In conclusion, probiotics administration decreased the population of pathogenic bacteria in feces from pre-weaned dairy calves on Day 7 of age. However, the treatment did not have an impact on bacterial diversity. These results suggest that the administration of probiotics has the potential to control gastrointestinal pathogens. Full article

An Image Encryption Method Based on a Two-Dimensional Cross-Coupled Chaotic System

Chaotic systems have demonstrated significant potential in the field of image encryption due to their extreme sensitivity to initial conditions, inherent unpredictability, and pseudo-random behavior. However, existing chaos-based encryption schemes still face several limitations, including narrow chaotic regions, discontinuous chaotic ranges, uneven trajectory distributions, and fixed pixel processing sequences. These issues substantially hinder the security and efficiency of such algorithms. To address these challenges, this paper proposes a novel hyperchaotic map, termed the two-dimensional cross-coupled chaotic map (2D-CFCM), derived from a newly designed 2D cross-coupled chaotic system. The proposed 2D-CFCM exhibits enhanced randomness, greater sensitivity to initial values, a broader chaotic region, and a more uniform trajectory distribution, thereby offering stronger security guarantees for image encryption applications. Based on the 2D-CFCM, an innovative image encryption method was further developed, incorporating efficient scrambling and forward and reverse random multidirectional diffusion operations with symmetrical properties. Through simulation tests on images of varying sizes and resolutions, including color images, the results demonstrate the strong security performance of the proposed method. This method has several remarkable features, including an extremely large key space (greater than 2912), extremely high key sensitivity, nearly ideal entropy value (greater than 7.997), extremely low pixel correlation (less than 0.04), and excellent resistance to differential attacks (with the average values of NPCR and UACI being 99.6050% and 33.4643%, respectively). Compared to existing encryption algorithms, the proposed method provides significantly enhanced security. Full article

Agriculture is the backbone of Punjab’s economy, and with much of India’s population dependent on agriculture, the requirement for accurate and timely monitoring of land has become even more crucial. Blending remote sensing with state-of-the-art machine learning algorithms enables the detailed classification of agricultural lands through thematic mapping, which is critical for crop monitoring, land management, and sustainable development. Here, a Hyper-tuned Deep Neural Network (Hy-DNN) model was created and used for land use and land cover (LULC) classification into four classes: agricultural land, vegetation, water bodies, and built-up areas. The technique made use of multispectral data from Sentinel-2 and Landsat-8, processed on the Google Earth Engine (GEE) platform. To measure classification performance, Hy-DNN was contrasted with traditional classifiers—Convolutional Neural Network (CNN), Random Forest (RF), Classification and Regression Tree (CART), Minimum Distance Classifier (MDC), and Naive Bayes (NB)—using performance metrics including producer’s and consumer’s accuracy, Kappa coefficient, and overall accuracy. Hy-DNN performed the best, with overall accuracy being 97.60% using Sentinel-2 and 91.10% using Landsat-8, outperforming all base models. These results further highlight the superiority of the optimised Hy-DNN in agricultural land mapping and its potential use in crop health monitoring, disease diagnosis, and strategic agricultural planning. Pharmacist-Driven Chondroprotection in Osteoarthritis: A Multifaceted Approach Using Patient Education, Information Visualization, and Lifestyle Integration

Osteoarthritis (OA) remains a major contributor to pain and disability; however, the current management is largely reactive, focusing on symptoms rather than preventing irreversible cartilage loss. This review first examines the mechanistic foundations for pharmacological chondroprotection—illustrating how conventional agents, such as glucosamine sulfate and chondroitin sulfate, can potentially restore extracellular matrix (ECM) components, may attenuate catabolic enzyme activity, and might enhance joint lubrication—and explores the delivery challenges posed by avascular cartilage and synovial diffusion barriers. Subsequently, a practical “What–How–When” framework is introduced to guide community pharmacists in risk screening, DMOAD selection, chronotherapeutic dosing, safety monitoring, and lifestyle integration, as exemplified by the CHONDROMOVING infographic brochure designed for diverse health literacy levels. Building on these strategies, the P4–4P Chondroprotection Framework is proposed, integrating predictive risk profiling (physicians), preventive pharmacokinetic and chronotherapy optimization (pharmacists), personalized biomechanical interventions (physiotherapists), and participatory self-management (patients) into a unified, feedback-driven OA care model. To translate this framework into routine practice, I recommend the development of DMOAD-specific clinical guidelines, incorporation of chondroprotective chronotherapy and interprofessional collaboration into health-professional curricula, and establishment of multidisciplinary OA management pathways—supported by appropriate reimbursement structures, to support preventive, team-based management, and prioritization of large-scale randomized trials and real-world evidence studies to validate the long-term structural, functional, and quality of life benefits of synchronized DMOAD and exercise-timed interventions. This comprehensive, precision-driven paradigm aims to shift OA care from reactive palliation to true disease modification, preserving cartilage integrity and improving the quality of life for millions worldwide. Background: Computed tomography urography (CTU) is routinely used to evaluate the upper urinary tract in patients with hematuria. CTU may detect incidental findings outside the urinary tract, but it remains unclear if this adds value. This study aimed to develop a deep learning algorithm that automatically segments and selectively visualizes the urinary tract on CTU. Methods: The urinary tract (kidneys, ureters, and urinary bladder) was manually segmented on 2 mm dual-phase CTU slices of 111 subjects. With this dataset, a deep learning-based AI was trained to automatically segment and selectively visualize the urinary tract on CTU scans (including accompanying unenhanced CT scans), which we dub “focused view CTU”. Focused view CTU was technically optimized and tested in 39 subjects with hematuria. Results: The technically optimized focused view CTU algorithm provided complete visualization of 97.4% of kidneys, 80.8% of ureters, and 94.9% of urinary bladders. All urinary tract organs were completely visualized in 66.6% of cases. In these cases (excluding 33.3% of cases with incomplete visualization), focused view CTU intrinsically achieved a sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, and negative predictive value of 100.0%, 92.3%, 92.9%, and 100.0% for lesions in the urinary tract compared to unmodified CT, although interrater agreement was moderate (κ = 0.528). All incidental findings were successfully hidden by focused view CTU. Conclusions: Focused view CTU provides adequate urinary tract segmentation in most cases, but further research is needed to optimize the technique (segmentation does not succeed in about one-third of cases). It offers selective urinary tract visualization, potentially aiding in assessing relevance and cost-effectiveness of detecting incidental findings in hematuria patients through a prospective randomized trial. Background: Low-glycemic index (GI) carbohydrates like isomaltulose (ISO) are known to enhance incretin release and to improve postprandial glucose control at the following meal (an effect known as second meal effect, or SME), which is particularly beneficial for individuals with metabolic syndrome (MetS). This study aimed to assess the most effective preprandial interval of ISO- or saccharose (SUC) snacks (1 h vs. 3 h preload) to enhance prandial incretin responses to a subsequent meal. Methods: In a randomized crossover design, 15 participants with MetS completed four experimental conditions on four non-consecutive days, combining two preload types (ISO or SUC) and two preload timings (Intervention A: 3 h preload; Intervention B: 1 h preload). Specifically, the four conditions were (1) ISO + Intervention A, (2) SUC + Intervention A, (3) ISO + Intervention B, and (4) SUC + Intervention B. The order of conditions was randomized and separated by a 3–7-day washout period to minimize carryover effects. On each study day, participants consumed two mixed meal tests (MMT-1 and MMT-2) with a standardized preload (50 g ISO or SUC) administered either 3 h or 1 h prior to MMT-2. Blood samples were collected over 9 h at 15 predefined time points for analysis of glucose, insulin, C-peptide, and incretin hormones (GLP-1, GIP, and PYY). Results: The unique digestion profile of ISO resulted in a blunted glucose ascent rate (ΔG/Δt: 0.28 vs. 0.53 mmol/L/min for SUC, p < 0.01), paralleled by synonyms PYY elevation over 540 min monitoring, compared with SUC. ISO also led to higher and more sustained GLP-1 and PYY levels, while SUC induced a stronger GIP response. Notably, the timing of ISO consumption significantly influenced PYY secretion, with the 3 h preload showing enhanced PYY responses and a more favorable SME compared to the 1 h preload. Conclusions: ISO, particularly when consumed 3 h before a meal (vs. 1 h), offers significant advantages over SUC by elevating PYY levels, blunting the glucose ascent rate, and sustaining GLP-1 release. This synergy enhances the second meal effect, suggesting ISO’s potential for managing postprandial glycemic excursions in MetS. Full article

Space-Air-Ground Integrated Network (SAGIN), which is considered a network architecture with great development potential, exhibits significant cross-domain collaboration characteristics at present. However, most of the existing works ignore the matching and adaptability of differential tasks and heterogeneous resources, resulting in significantly inefficient task execution and undesirable network performance. As a consequence, we formulate a category attribute-oriented resource allocation and task offloading optimization problem with the aim of minimizing the overall scheduling cost. We first introduce a task–resource matching matrix to facilitate optimal task offloading policies with computation resources. In addition, virtual queues are constructed to take the impacts of randomized task arrival into account. To solve the optimization objective which jointly considers bandwidth allocation, transmission power control and task offloading decision effectively, we proposed a deep reinforcement learning (DRL) algorithm framework considering type matching. Simulation experiments demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed algorithm as well as superior performance compared to others. Full article

The increasing penetration of renewable energy into power systems has intensified transient power quality (PQ) disturbances, demanding efficient detection and classification methods to enable timely operational decisions. This paper introduces a hybrid framework combining an Improved Adaptive S-Transform (IAST) with a Random Forest (RF) classifier to address these challenges. The IAST employs a globally adaptive Gaussian window as its kernel function, which automatically adjusts window length and spectral resolution based on real-time frequency characteristics, thereby enhancing time–frequency localization accuracy while reducing algorithmic complexity. To optimize computational efficiency, window parameters are determined through an energy concentration maximization criterion, enabling rapid extraction of discriminative features from diverse PQ disturbances (e.g., voltage sags and transient interruptions). These features are then fed into an RF classifier, which simultaneously mitigates model variance and bias, achieving robust classification. Experimental results show that the proposed IAST–RF method achieves a classification accuracy of 99.73%, demonstrating its potential for real-time PQ monitoring in modern grids with high renewable energy penetration. Timely and accurate monitoring of crop nitrogen (N) status is essential for precision agriculture. UAV-based hyperspectral remote sensing offers high-resolution data for estimating plant nitrogen concentration (PNC), but its cost and complexity limit large-scale application. This study compares the performance of UAV hyperspectral data (S185 sensor) with simulated multispectral data from DJI Phantom 4 Multispectral (P4M), PlanetScope (PS), and Sentinel-2A (S2) in estimating winter wheat PNC. Spectral data were collected across six growth stages over two seasons and resampled to match the spectral characteristics of the three multispectral sensors. Three variable selection strategies (one-dimensional (1D) spectral reflectance, optimized two-dimensional (2D), and three-dimensional (3D) spectral indices) were combined with Random Forest Regression (RFR), Support Vector Machine Regression (SVMR), and Partial Least Squares Regression (PLSR) to build PNC prediction models. Results showed that, while hyperspectral data yielded slightly higher accuracy, optimized multispectral indices, particularly from PS and S2, achieved comparable performance. Among models, SVM and RFR showed consistent effectiveness across strategies. These findings highlight the potential of low-cost multispectral platforms for practical crop N monitoring. Future work should validate these models using real satellite imagery and explore multi-source data fusion with advanced learning algorithms. Full article

Correlations Between Coffee Intake, Glycemic Control, Cardiovascular Risk, and Sleep in Type 2 Diabetes and Hypertension: A 12-Month Observational Study

Background: The consumption of coffee has been widely debated regarding its effects on health. This study aims to analyze the correlations between daily coffee intake and sleep, blood pressure, anthropometric measurements, and biochemical markers in individuals with type 2 diabetes (T2D) and hypertension over a 12-month period. Methods: An observational study was conducted with 40 participants with T2D and hypertension, comprising 20 females and 20 males. Participants were monitored for their daily coffee consumption over a 12-month period, being assessed every 3 months. Linear regression was utilized to assess interactions and relationships between variables, providing insights into potential predictive associations. Additionally, correlation analysis was performed using Pearson’s and Spearman’s tests to evaluate the strength and direction of linear and non-linear relationships. Statistical significance was set at p < 0.05. Results: Significant changes were observed in fasting blood glucose (FBG), glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c), body weight, body mass index, sleep duration, nocturnal awakenings, and waist-to-hip ratio (p < 0.05) over the 12-month study in both sexes. No significant differences were noted in the remaining parameters (p > 0.05). The coffee consumed by the participants was of the “traditional type” and contained sugar (2g per cup) for 100% of the participants. An intake of 4.17 ± 0.360 cups per day was found at baseline and 5.41 ± 0.316 cups at 12 months (p > 0.05). Regarding correlation analysis, a higher coffee intake was significantly associated with shorter sleep duration in women (r = −0.731; p = 0.037). Conversely, greater coffee consumption correlated with lower LDL cholesterol (LDL-C) levels in women (r = −0.820; p = 0.044). Additionally, a longer sleep duration was linked to lower FBG (r = -0.841; p = 0.031), HbA1c (r = -0.831; p = 0.037), and LDL-C levels in women (r = -0.713; p = 0.050). No significant correlations were observed for the other parameters in both sexes (p > 0.05). Conclusions: In women, coffee consumption may negatively affect sleep duration while potentially offering beneficial effects on LDL-C levels, even when sweetened with sugar. Additionally, a longer sleep duration in women appears to be associated with improvements in FBG, HbA1c, and LDL-C. These correlations emphasize the importance of a balanced approach to coffee consumption, weighing both its potential health benefits and drawbacks in postmenopausal women. However, since this study does not establish causality, further randomized clinical trials are warranted to investigate the underlying mechanisms and long-term implications—particularly in the context of T2D and hypertension. Flocculants are indispensable in water and wastewater treatment, enabling the aggregation and removal of suspended particles, colloids, and emulsions. However, the conventional development and application of flocculants rely heavily on empirical methods, which are time-consuming, resource-intensive, and environmentally problematic due to issues such as sludge production and chemical residues. Recent advances in machine learning (ML) have opened transformative avenues for the design, optimization, and intelligent application of flocculants. This review systematically examines the integration of ML into flocculant research, covering algorithmic approaches, data-driven structure–property modeling, high-throughput formulation screening, and smart process control. ML models—including random forests, neural networks, and Gaussian processes—have successfully predicted flocculation performance, guided synthesis optimization, and enabled real-time dosing control. Applications extend to both synthetic and bioflocculants, with ML facilitating strain engineering, fermentation yield prediction, and polymer degradability assessments. Furthermore, the convergence of ML with IoT, digital twins, and life cycle assessment tools has accelerated the transition toward sustainable, adaptive, and low-impact treatment technologies. Despite its potential, challenges remain in data standardization, model interpretability, and real-world implementation. This review concludes by outlining strategic pathways for future research, including the development of open datasets, hybrid physics–ML frameworks, and interdisciplinary collaborations. By leveraging ML, the next generation of flocculant systems can be more effective, environmentally benign, and intelligently controlled, contributing to global water sustainability goals. PSG and Other Candidate Genes as Potential Biomarkers of Therapy Resistance in B-ALL: Insights from Chromosomal Microarray Analysis and Machine Learning

Chromosomal microarray analysis (CMA) was performed for 40 patients with B-ALL undergoing treatment according to the ALL-2016 protocol to investigate the copy number alterations (CNAs) and copy neutral loss of heterozygosity (cnLOH) associated with minimal residual disease (MRD)-positive remission. Aberrations involving over 20,000 genes were identified, and a random forest approach was applied to isolate a subset of genes whose CNAs and cnLOH are significantly associated with poor therapeutic response. We have assembled the triple matched healthy population data and used that data as a reference, but not as a matched control. We identified a recurrent cluster of cnLOH in the 19q13.2–19q13.31 region, significantly enriched in MRD-positive patients (70% vs. 47% in the reference group vs. 16% in MRD-negative patients). This region includes the pregnancy-specific glycoprotein (PSG) gene family and the oncogene ERF, suggesting a potential role in leukemic persistence and treatment resistance. Additionally, we observed significant deletions involving 7p22.3 and 16q13, often as part of large-scale losses affecting almost the entire chromosomes 7 and 16, indicative of global chromosomal instability. These findings highlight specific genomic regions potentially involved in therapy resistance and may contribute to improved risk stratification in B-ALL. Our findings emphasize the value of high-resolution CMA in diagnostics and risk stratification and suggest that PSG genes and other candidate genes could serve as biomarkers for predicting treatment outcomes. A newly emerging disease affecting Schizolobium parahyba (commonly known as pachaco), termed “decline and dieback,” has been reported in association with the fungal pathogens Fusarium sp. and Botryodiplodia sp. This study assessed the antagonistic potential of two Trichoderma sp. isolates (CEP-01 and CEP-02) against these phytopathogens under controlled laboratory conditions. The effects of three temperature regimes (5 ± 2 °C, 24 ± 2 °C, and 30 ± 2 °C) on the growth and inhibitory activity of two Trichoderma spp. isolates were evaluated using a completely randomized design. The first experiment included six treatments with five replicates, while the second comprised twelve treatments, also with five replicates. All assays were conducted on PDA medium. No fungal growth was observed at 5 ± 2 °C. However, at 24 ± 2 °C and 30 ± 2 °C, both isolates reached maximum growth within 72 h. At 24 ± 2 °C, both Trichoderma spp. isolates exhibited inhibitory activity against Fusarium sp. FE07 and FE08, with radial growth inhibition percentages (RGIP) ranging from 37.6% to 44.4% and 52,8% to 54.6%, respectively. When combined, the isolates achieved up to 60% inhibition against Fusarium sp., while Botryodiplodia sp. was inhibited by 40%. At 30 ± 2 °C, the antagonistic activity of Trichoderma sp. CEP-01 declined (25.6–32.4% RGIP), whereas Trichoderma sp. CEP-02 showed increased inhibition (60.3%–67.2%). The combination of isolates exhibited the highest inhibitory effect against Fusarium sp. FE07 and FE08 (68.4%–69.3%). Nonetheless, the inhibitory effect on Botryodiplodia sp. BIOT was reduced under elevated temperatures across all treatments. These findings reinforce the potential of Trichoderma spp. isolates as a viable and eco-friendly alternative for the biological control of pathogens affecting S. parahyba, contributing to more sustainable disease management practices. The observed inhibitory capacity of Trichoderma sp., especially under optimal temperature conditions, highlights its potential for application in integrated disease management programs, contributing to forest health and reducing reliance on chemical products. This article describes the design, methods, and baseline characteristics of the social needs assessment (SNA) of participants enrolled in an ongoing randomized clinical trial implementing a comprehensive approach to improving diabetes self-management and providing an intensive Diabetes Self-Management Education and Support (iDSMES) Program at St. Vincent’s House Clinic, a primary care practice serving resource-challenged diverse populations in Galveston, Texas. Standardized SNA was conducted to collect information on financial needs, psychosocial well-being, and other chronic health conditions. Based on their identified needs, participants were referred to non-medical existing community resources. A series of in-depth interviews were conducted with a subset of participants. A team member independently categorized these SNA narratives and aggregated them into two overarching groups: medical and social needs. Fifty-nine participants (with a mean age of 53 years and equal representation of men and women) completed an SNA. Most (71%) did not have health insurance. Among 12 potential social needs surveyed, the most frequently requested resources were occupational therapy (78%), utility assistance (73%), and food pantry services (71%). SNA provided data with the potential to address barriers that may hinder participation, retention, and outcomes in diabetes self-management. SNA findings may serve as tertiary prevention to mitigate diabetes-related complications and disparities. Full article

Fetal tachyarrhythmias, particularly supraventricular tachycardia (SVT) and atrial flutter (AFL), pose significant clinical challenges, especially when complicated by hydrops fetalis. This article provides a comprehensive review of the tachyarrhythmia types, the diagnostic modalities applied, and the therapeutic strategies followed in fetal tachyarrhythmias. Diagnostic techniques such as M-mode echocardiography and fetal magnetocardiography (fMCG) are highlighted for their capacity to provide real-time, high-quality assessments of fetal cardiac rhythms. The review, also, focuses on pharmacologic management via transplacental therapy, discussing the safety and efficacy of the key agents including digoxin, flecainide, and sotalol, under different clinical scenarios, such as hydropic fetus and renal impairment. In addition to transplacental administration, alternative approaches such as direct fetal intramuscular or intravascular injections are examined. These direct methods, while potentially more effective in refractory cases, carry risks that necessitate specialized expertise and careful consideration of maternal and fetal safety. The limitations of current evidence, largely based on small case studies and retrospective analyses, underscore the need for larger, prospective multicenter observational studies and randomized control trials to establish standardized protocols for fetal tachyarrhythmia management. Overall, this review advocates for a personalized, multidisciplinary approach, emphasizing early fetal tachyarrhythmias diagnosis, tailored treatment regimens that balances efficacy with safety, and rigorous monitoring to optimize outcomes for both the fetus and the mother.
