Diradicals have attracted the attention of chemists due to their unique electronic structures and properties originating from unpaired electrons. One of the fundamental motifs of diradicals is quinodimethane; p- and o-quinodimethanes are singlet Kekulé hydrocarbons, while m-quinodimethane is a triplet non-Kekulé hydrocarbon. Most of the hydrocarbon diradicals studied to date have been limited to p- and o-quinodimethane-based non-fused-ring and fused-ring open-shell singlet diradicals and m-quinodimethane-based non-fused-ring triplet diradicals. In this account, studies on m-quinodimethane-based fused-ring diradicals, including an open-shell singlet Kekulé hydrocarbon, an open-shell singlet zwitterion, non-Kekulé hydrocarbon-based triplet diradical and diradical cation, and a triplet Kekulé hydrocarbon, are summarized. They are designed, successfully synthesized, and isolated as crystals, and their fundamental electronic structures and properties have been elucidated by optical, electrochemical, and magnetic measurements, together with DFT calculations. A series of studies showed that controlling the interaction between the two unpaired electrons of m-quinodimethane through an appropriate molecular design would produce polycyclic diradicals with various open-shell singlet diradical characters and the energy differences between singlet and triplet states. A stable π-expanded o-quinodimethane derivative (2) was synthesized by photochemical dearomative cycloaddition of corannulene with an isolable dialkylsilylene (1) and isolated as a dark blue solid. Compound 2 adopts a very flat bowl shape in contrast to parent corannulene. Structural and spectroscopic characteristics, redox properties, and computational study suggest that 2 has a small but significant diradical character (y0 = 0.11). One-electron reduction of 2 provides the corresponding radical anion as an isolable salt. Full article

Perovskite quantum dots (PQDs) have drawn global attention in recent years and have been used in a range of semiconductor devices, especially for light-emitting diodes (LEDs). However, because of the nature of low-conductive ligands of PQDs and surface and bulk defects in the devices, charge injection and transport should be carefully managed in order to maximize the electroluminescent performances. In this study, we employed three p-dopants, i.e., 2,3,5,6-tetrafluoro-7,7,8,8-tetracyanoquinodimethane (F4-TCNQ), 1,3,4,5,7,8-hexafluoro-11,11,12,12-tetracyanonaphtho-2,6-quinodimethane (F6-TCNNQ), and 11,11,12,12-tetracyanonaphtho-2,6-quinodimethane (TCNH14), respectively doped into the commonly used hole transporting layer (HTL) poly[bis(4-phenyl)(2,4,6-trimethylphenyl)amine] (PTAA). Compared with the devices with the neat PTAA, those with the doped PTAA as the HTLs achieved the improved electroluminescent performances. In particular, the device with the strong oxidant F4-TCNQ exhibited an improvement factor of 27% in the peak external quantum efficiency compared with the control device with the neat PTAA. The capacitance and transient electroluminescent measurements were carried out to identify the imperceptible interactions in the doped HTL and at the interface between the HTL and PQDs. Full article

The structure formed by cobalt phthalocyanine (CoPc) and cobalt octaethylporphyrin (CoOEP) with electron-acceptor tetracyano-π-quinodimethane (TCNQ), was studied by Density Functional Theory (DFT) methods. According to theoretical calculations, both cobalt systems can establish dispersion forces related to TCNQ and also in both cases the link between them is built by means of hydrogen bonds. Based on the results of these DFT calculations, we developed experimental work: the organic semiconductors were doped, and the thermal evaporation technique was used to prepare semiconductor thin films of such compounds. The structure of the films was studied by FTIR and Raman spectroscopy. The optical properties of the CoPc-TCNQ and CoOEP-TCNQ films were investigated by means of UV-Vis measurements. The results obtained were used to estimate the type of transitions and the optical bandgap. The results were compared to the previously calculated theoretical bandgap. The CoOEP-TCNQ film presented the smallest theoretical and experimental bandgap. Finally, the electrical properties of the organic semiconductors were evaluated from a PET (polyethylene terephthalate)/indium tin oxide (ITO)/cobalt macrocycle-TCNQ/silver (Ag) device we prepared. The CoOEP-TCNQ-based device showed an ohmic behavior. The device manufactured from CoPc-TCNQ also showed an ohmic behavior at low voltages, but significantly changed to SCLC (space-charge limited conductivity) at high voltage values. Full article

In the current work, flexible diodes with flat heterojunction and dispersed heterojunction architecture were manufactured with to study the behavior of thin films of disodium phthalocyanine (Na2Pc). The thin film devices, using the electronic acceptor tetracyano-π-quinodimethane (TCNQ), were fabricated by high-vacuum thermal evaporation with annealing post-treatment in order to optimize their behavior. Theoretical calculations based on density functional theory (DFT) with dispersion force analysis were carried out in order to simulate molecular interactions and to establish the nature of the weak interactions between the Na2Pc and TCNQ fragments. In the optimized structure of the coupled Na2Pc-TCNQ, the electronic relationship between phthalocyanine and TCNQ was observed to be through hydrogen bonds with bond lengths of 2.94 and 3.13 Å. Dispersed heterojunction device current density values were considerably larger than those of the flat heterojunction device. Barrier heights of 1.024 and 0.909 eV and charge mobilities of 10−10 and 10−9 m2/Vs for the flat heterojunction device and the dispersed heterojunction device, respectively, were observed. A small effect was observed on the electrical properties by thermal annealing on the flat heterojunction device. The threshold voltage decreased from 1.203 to 1.147 V and φb decreased by 0.001 eV. Different colored CT complexes were obtained. The reaction mechanism and site of interaction were determined by ultraviolet-visible spectrophotometric techniques and computational molecular modeling. The formation of the colored complexes was utilized in the development of simple, rapid and accurate spectrophotometric methods for the determination of ROS-Ca. Under the optimum reaction conditions, linear relationships with good correlation coefficients (0.9984–0.9995) were found between the absorbances and the concentrations of ROS-Ca in the range of 2–200 mg mL−1. The limits of detection ranged from 0.41 to 12.24 mg mL−1. No interference could be observed from the additives commonly present in the tablets or from the drugs that are co-formulated with ROS-Ca in its combined formulations. The methods were successfully applied to the analysis of tablets with good accuracy and precision; the recovery percentages ranged from 99.54–100.46 ± 1.58–1.82%. The results were compared favorably with the reported method. The proposed methods are practical and valuable for routine application in quality control laboratories for determination of ROS-Ca in its bulk form and tablets. Full article

Abstract
The [4+2] cycloaddition between 2,4-diphenylpyrimidine ortho-quinodimethane and dimethyl acetylenedicarboxylate leads to 2,4-diphenylquinazoline-6,7-dicarboxylate (6). 2,4-Diphenylfuro[3,4-g]quinazoline-6,8-dione (7) is also obtained by basic hydrolysis of compound 6, followed by the closure of the resulting diacid in acetic anhydride.
