Pain management in multiple trauma patients presents a complex clinical challenge due to competing priorities such as hemodynamic instability, polypharmacy, coagulopathy, and the urgency of life-saving interventions. In this context, peripheral nerve blocks (PNBs) are increasingly recognized as a valuable asset for their role in managing pain in patients with multiple traumatic injuries. By reducing reliance on systemic opioids, PNBs support effective pain control and facilitate early mobilization, aligning with enhanced recovery principles. This narrative review summarizes current evidence on the use of PNBs in the context of polytrauma, focusing on their analgesic efficacy, integration within multimodal analgesia protocols, and contribution to improved functional outcomes. Despite these advantages, clinical application is limited by specific concerns, including the potential to mask compartment syndrome, the risk of nerve injury or local anesthetic systemic toxicity (LAST), and logistical barriers in acute trauma settings. Emerging directions in the field include the refinement of ultrasound-guided PNB techniques, the expanded use of continuous catheter systems, and the incorporation of fascial plane blocks for anatomically complex or multisite trauma. Parallel efforts are focusing on the development of decision-making algorithms, improved risk stratification tools, and integration into multimodal analgesic pathways. There is also growing emphasis on standardized clinical protocols, simulation-based training, and patient education to enhance safety and consistency in practice. As evidence continues to evolve, the long-term impact of PNBs on functional recovery, quality of life, and healthcare utilization must be further explored. With thoughtful implementation, structured training, and institutional support, PNBs may evolve into a cornerstone of modern trauma analgesia. Full article

Depression represents one of the most prevalent mental health disorders globally, significantly impacting quality of life and posing substantial healthcare challenges. Traditional diagnostic methods rely on subjective assessments and clinical interviews, often leading to misdiagnosis, delayed treatment, and suboptimal outcomes. Recent advances in biosensing technologies offer promising avenues for objective depression assessment through detection of relevant biomarkers and physiological parameters. This review examines multi-modal biosensing approaches for depression by analyzing electrochemical biosensors for neurotransmitter monitoring alongside wearable sensors tracking autonomic, neural, and behavioral parameters. We explore sensor fusion methodologies, temporal dynamics analysis, and context-aware frameworks that enhance monitoring accuracy through complementary data streams. The review discusses clinical validation across diagnostic, screening, and treatment applications, identifying performance metrics, implementation challenges, and ethical considerations. We outline technical barriers, user acceptance factors, and data privacy concerns while presenting a development roadmap for personalized, continuous monitoring solutions. This integrative approach holds significant potential to revolutionize depression care by enabling earlier detection, precise diagnosis, tailored treatment, and sensitive monitoring guided by objective biosignatures. Successful implementation requires interdisciplinary collaboration among engineers, clinicians, data scientists, and end-users to balance technical sophistication with practical usability across diverse healthcare contexts. Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) remains significantly underdiagnosed in women, resulting in a persistent gender gap with important clinical, functional, and psychosocial implications. This narrative review explores the multifactorial barriers contributing to diagnostic disparities, including the male-oriented structure of current diagnostic criteria, the prevalence of co-occurring psychiatric conditions, and the phenomenon of social camouflaging shaped by culturally reinforced gender norms. These factors frequently lead to delayed identification, clinical misinterpretation, and suboptimal care. The review synthesizes evidence from clinical, psychological, and sociocultural research to demonstrate how the under-recognition of ASD in women impacts mental health outcomes, access to education, occupational stability, and overall quality of life. Special emphasis is placed on the consequences of missed or late diagnoses for healthcare delivery and the educational needs of clinicians involved in ASD assessment and care. This article concludes with actionable, evidence-based recommendations for enhancing diagnostic sensitivity, developing gender-responsive screening strategies, and integrating training on female autism presentation into medical and allied health education. Addressing these challenges is essential to reducing diagnostic inequities and ensuring timely, accurate, and person-centered care for autistic women throughout their lifespan. Full article

Epileptic seizure prediction remains a critical challenge in neuroscience and healthcare, with profound implications for enhancing patient safety and quality of life. In this paper, we introduce a novel seizure prediction method that leverages electroencephalogram (EEG) data, combining discrete wavelet transform (DWT)-based time–frequency analysis, advanced feature extraction, and deep learning using Fourier neural networks (FNNs). The proposed approach extracts essential features from EEG signals—including entropy, power, frequency, and amplitude—to effectively capture the brain’s complex and nonstationary dynamics. We measure the method based on the broadly used CHB-MIT EEG dataset, ensuring direct comparability with prior research. Experimental results demonstrate that our DWT-FS-FNN model achieves a prediction accuracy of 98.96 with a zero false positive rate, outperforming several state-of-the-art methods. These findings underscore the potential of integrating advanced signal processing and deep learning methods for reliable, real-time seizure prediction. Future work will focus on optimizing the model for real-world clinical deployment and expanding it to incorporate multimodal physiological data, further enhancing its applicability in clinical practice. Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (ME/CFS) is a worldwide challenge. There are an estimated 17–24 million patients worldwide, with an estimated 60 percent or more who have not been diagnosed. Without a known cure, no specific curative medication, disability lasting years to being life-long, and disagreement among healthcare providers as to how to most appropriately treat these patients, ME/CFS patients are in need of assistance. Appropriate healthcare provider education would increase the percentage of patients diagnosed and treated; however, in-school healthcare provider education is limited. To address the latter issue, the New Jersey Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome Association (NJME/CFSA) has developed an independent, incentive-driven, learning program for students of the health professions. NJME/CFSA offers a yearly scholarship program in which applicants write a scholarly paper on an ME/CFS-related topic. The efficacy of the program is demonstrated by the 2024–2025 first place scholarship winner’s essay, which addresses the biological basis of ME/CFS and how the healthcare provider can improve the quality of life of ME/CFS patients. For the reader, the essay provides an update on what is known regarding the biological underpinnings of ME/CFS, as well as a medical student’s perspective as to how the clinician can provide care and support for ME/CFS patients. The original essay has been slightly modified to demonstrate that ME/CFS is a worldwide problem and for publication. Full article

Background: Moral harassment (mobbing) in healthcare, particularly among nurses, remains a persistent issue with detrimental effects on mental health, resilience, and quality of life. Aim: We examine the relationship between the resilience of nurses working in Emergency Departments (EDs) and how these factors influence experiences of workplace mobbing. Methods: This cross-sectional study included 90 nurses from four public hospitals in Greece’s 5th Health District. Data were collected between October 2023 and March 2024 using the WHOQOL-BREF, Workplace Psychologically Violent Behaviors (WPVB) scale and the Connor–Davidson Resilience Scale (CD-RISC). The sample consisted primarily of full-time nurses (84.3% female; mean age = 43.1 years), with 21.1% reporting chronic conditions. Most participants were married (80.0%) and had children (74.4%), typically two (56.1%). Statistical analyses—conducted using SPSS version 27.0—included descriptive statistics, Pearson and Spearman correlations, multiple linear regression, and mediation analysis, with significance set at p < 0.05. Results: Resilience was moderate (mean = 66.38%; Cronbach’s α = 0.93) and positively correlated with all WHOQOL-BREF domains—physical, psychological, social, and environmental (r = 0.30–0.40)—but not with the overall WHOQOL-BREF. The mean overall WHOQOL-BREF score was 68.4%, with the lowest scores observed in the environmental domain (mean = 53.76%). Workplace mobbing levels were low to moderate (mean WPVB score = 17.87), with subscale reliabilities ranging from α = 0.78 to 0.95. Mobbing was negatively associated with social relationships and the environmental WHOQOL-BREF (ρ = –0.23 to –0.33). Regression analysis showed that cohabitation and higher resilience significantly predicted better WHOQOL-BREF outcomes, whereas mobbing was not a significant predictor. Mediation analysis (bootstrap N = 5000) indicated no significant indirect effect of resilience in the relationship between mobbing and WHOQOL-BREF. Conclusions: Resilience was identified as a key protective factor for nurses’ quality of life in emergency care settings. Although workplace mobbing was present at low-to-moderate levels, it was negatively associated with specific WHOQOL-BREF domains. Enhancing mental resilience among nurses may serve as a valuable strategy to mitigate the psychological effects of moral harassment in healthcare environments. Full article

Background and Aim: Type 2 diabetes (T2D) continues to pose a significant public health challenge worldwide. Among therapeutic options, glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1 RAs) have proven effective in optimizing glycemic control and improving cardiometabolic profiles. Semaglutide, now available in an oral formulation, represents a modern strategy to improve patient adherence while supporting glucose and weight regulation. This study primarily investigated the effects of oral semaglutide on key metabolic indicators and secondary endpoints included cardiovascular risk markers (blood pressure and lipid profile) and patient-reported quality of life (QoL). Study Design and Methods: A longitudinal, prospective observational study was conducted involving patients with T2D across two Italian healthcare facilities. Participants were assessed at baseline (T0) and at three subsequent intervals—6 months (T1), 12 months (T2), and 18 months (T3)—following the initiation of oral semaglutide use. Key Findings: Out of 116 participants enrolled, 97 had complete and analyzable data. Across the 18-month follow-up, significant improvements were observed in glycemic parameters, with a notable reduction in HbA1c levels (T0 vs. T3, p = 0.0028; p ≤ 0.05, statistically significant). Self-reported outcomes showed enhanced quality of life, especially in treatment satisfaction and perceived flexibility (T0 vs. T3, p < 0.001). Conclusions: Daily administration of 14 mg oral semaglutide in individuals with T2D resulted in substantial benefits in glycemic regulation, weight reduction, cardiovascular risk management, and overall patient satisfaction. These findings reinforce its potential role as a sustainable and effective option in long-term diabetes care from both a clinical and public health perspective. Full article

Background: Schizophrenia affects patients’ organizational thinking, as well as their ability to identify problems. The main objective of this study was to explore healthcare consultants’ application of AI mind maps to educate patients with schizophrenia regarding their perceptions of family function, social support, quality of life, and loneliness, and to help these patients think more organizationally and understand problems more effectively. Methods: The study used a survey research design and purposive sampling method to recruit 66 participants with schizophrenia who attended the psychiatric outpatient clinic of a hospital in central Taiwan. They needed to be literate, able to respond to the topic, and over 18 years old (inclusive), and they attended individual and group health education using AI mind maps over a 3-month period during regular outpatient clinic visits. Results: The study results show that patients’ family function directly affects their quality of life (p < 0.05) and loneliness (p < 0.05), satisfaction with social support affects quality of life and loneliness directly (p < 0.05), and satisfaction with social support is a mediating factor between family function and quality of life (p < 0.05), as well as a mediating factor between family function and loneliness (p < 0.05). Conclusions: Therefore, this study confirms the need to provide holistic, integrated mental health social care support for patients with schizophrenia, showing that healthcare consultants can apply AI mind maps to empower patients with schizophrenia to think more effectively about how to mobilize their social supports. Purpose: Exercise is recommended for survivors of breast cancer to alleviate adverse reactions and reduce the psychological burden. In recent years, however, environmental factors (e.g., pandemics and climate change) have made it difficult to exercise outdoors. Therefore, this study focused on the COVID-19 pandemic in Japan and evaluated the relationship between changes in physical activity (PA) and mental and physical health in breast cancer survivors. Methods: A questionnaire survey was conducted among 345 outpatient female breast cancer survivors aged between 29 and 69 years. The questionnaire was based on the International Physical Activity Questionnaire, the Patient Health Questionnaire-9, the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer Core Quality of Life Questionnaire, and the Fear of COVID-19 Scale and included patient characteristics, changes in PA during pandemic restrictions, and needs for exercise support. The analysis categorized PA changes into two groups according to activity levels. The relationship between changes in PA and physical and mental health was evaluated using logistic regression analysis. Results: Patients with decreased PA accounted for 65.5% of the study population. Regardless of their activity level, these patients were aware of an increased susceptibility to COVID-19, showed a fear of the disease and a tendency for depression, and reported low life satisfaction and declined physical function. Of the patients who stopped exercising, 82.9% reported a decline in PA. Compared with those who had never exercised, those who stopped exercising saw their risk of depression increase by 15.6%. There was a high demand for personalized exercise support from healthcare professionals. Conclusions: Regardless of their activity level, decreasing PA during the pandemic decreased mental health and physical function in breast cancer survivors. There was a higher risk of depression among patients who stopped exercising. Because it is possible that similar situations may occur in the future, interventions by healthcare professionals must be considered in order to continue exercise. Full article

Aging is a multifactorial process that affects various physiological functions, including masticatory performance, which is crucial for oral health and nutritional well-being. Impaired masticatory function, often due to factors such as tooth loss, reduced salivation, or muscle atrophy, can lead to significant nutritional challenges and compromise the overall health of elderly individuals. Recent research has illuminated the interconnectedness of masticatory function, oral microbiota, and gut health, suggesting that altered chewing ability may disrupt oral microbial communities, which in turn affect gastrointestinal health and systemic inflammation. This commentary review provides a comprehensive analysis of the role of masticatory function in aging, exploring its impact on the oral microbiota, gut health, and broader nutritional status. We discuss the potential consequences of impaired mastication, including malnutrition, dysbiosis, and gastrointestinal disorders, and explore possible strategies for improving masticatory function and maintaining a healthy gut microbiome through interventions like dietary modifications, oral care, and rehabilitation. We aim to underscore the importance of integrating masticatory function management into the broader context of aging-related healthcare, promoting holistic, multidisciplinary approaches to support nutritional needs and quality of life in older adults. Periprosthetic joint infections (PJIs) represent one of the most problematic complications following total joint replacement, with a significant impact on the patient’s quality of life and healthcare costs. The early and accurate diagnosis of a PJI remains the key factor in the management of such cases. However, with traditional diagnostic measures and risk assessment tools, the early identification of a PJI may not always be adequate. Artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms have been integrated in most technological domains, with recent integration into healthcare, providing promising applications due to their capability of analyzing vast and complex datasets. With the development and implementation of AI algorithms, the assessment of risk factors and the prediction of certain complications have become more efficient. This review aims to not only provide an overview of the current use of AI in predicting PJIs, the exploration of the types of algorithms used, and the performance metrics reported, but also the limitations and challenges that come with implementing such tools in clinical practice. Background/Objectives: Sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) is a major global health concern with high mortality despite advances in resuscitation techniques. Achieving return of spontaneous circulation (ROSC) represents merely the initial step in the extensive rehabilitation journey. This review highlights the critical role of structured, multidisciplinary rehabilitation following ROSC, emphasizing the necessity of integrated physiotherapy, neurocognitive therapy, and psychosocial support to enhance quality of life and societal reintegration in survivors. Methods: This narrative review analyzed peer-reviewed literature from 2020–2025, sourced from databases such as PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and Google Scholar. Emphasis was on clinical trials, expert guidelines (e.g., European Resuscitation Council 2021, American Heart Association 2020), and high-impact journals, with systematic thematic analysis across rehabilitation phases. Results: The review confirms rehabilitation as essential in addressing Intensive Care Unit–acquired weakness, cognitive impairment, and post-intensive care syndrome. Early rehabilitation (0–7 days post-ROSC), focusing on parameter-guided mobilization and cognitive stimulation, significantly improves functional outcomes. Structured interdisciplinary interventions encompassing cardiopulmonary, neuromuscular, and cognitive domains effectively mitigate long-term disability, facilitating return to daily activities and employment. However, access disparities and insufficient randomized controlled trials limit evidence-based standardization. Discussion: Optimal recovery after SCA necessitates early and continuous interdisciplinary engagement, tailored to individual physiological and cognitive profiles. Persistent cognitive fatigue, executive dysfunction, and emotional instability remain significant barriers, underscoring the need for holistic and sustained rehabilitative approaches. Conclusions: Comprehensive, individualized rehabilitation following cardiac arrest is not supplementary but fundamental to meaningful recovery. Emphasizing early mobilization, neurocognitive therapy, family involvement, and structured social reintegration pathways is crucial. Addressing healthcare disparities and investing in rigorous randomized trials are imperative to achieving standardized, equitable, and outcome-oriented rehabilitation services globally. Full article

Hemorrhoidal disease remains a prevalent yet often overlooked condition, affecting millions worldwide and imposing a substantial healthcare burden. Despite the availability of multiple treatment options, gaps persist in patient education, early symptom recognition, and optimal treatment selection. Recent advancements are evolving the pharmacist’s role in hemorrhoid management beyond traditional over-the-counter (OTC) and prescription approaches. The 2024 American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons (ASCRS) guidelines introduce updates on the use of phlebotonics, a class of venoactive drugs gaining recognition for their role in symptom management, yet largely underutilized in U.S. clinical practice. In parallel, novel clinical tools are reshaping how pharmacists engage in assessment and care. The integration of digital decision-support platforms and structured evaluation algorithms now empowers them to systematically evaluate symptoms, identify red flag signs, and optimize patient triage. These tools reduce diagnostic variability and improve decision-making accuracy. Given their accessibility and trusted role in frontline healthcare, pharmacists are well-positioned to bridge these critical gaps by adopting emerging treatment recommendations, leveraging algorithm-driven assessments, and reinforcing best practices in patient education and referral. This narrative review aims to equip pharmacists with updated insights into evidence-based hemorrhoid management strategies and provide them with structured assessment algorithms to standardize symptom evaluation and treatment pathways. By integrating these innovations, pharmacists can enhance treatment outcomes, promote patient safety, and contribute to improved quality of life (QoL) for individuals suffering from hemorrhoidal disease. Introduction: Nurses are the largest group of healthcare workers, and healthcare managers should pay attention to the quality of work life and the health and working capacity of nurses in order to ensure a sufficient number of nurses and a stable workforce. Aim: The present study aimed to determine nurses’ quality of work life, work ability index and intention to leave the nursing profession and to examine the associations between nurses’ quality of work life, work ability index and intention to leave the nursing profession. Methods: An online cross-sectional study was conducted. A total of 498 nurses completed the instrument, consisting of demographic data, Brooks’ Quality of Nursing Work Life Survey (BQNWL), Work Ability Index Questionnaire (WAIQ) and questions on their intention to leave their current job or the nursing profession. Results: Most nurses had a moderate quality of work life (QWL) (73.7%) and a good work ability index (WAI) (43.78%). Men (p = 0.047), nurses who study (p = 0.021), nurses who do not have children (p = 0.000) and nurses who do not take care of their parents (p = 0.000) have a statistically significantly higher total WAIQ score. Most nurses (61.1%) had considered changing jobs in the last 12 months, and 36.9% had considered leaving the nursing profession. A statistically significant positive correlation was found between the total BQNWL and the total WAI. The study found no correlation between QWL, WAI and intention to change jobs or leave the profession, which was unexpected. Conclusions: To ensure the provision of necessary nursing care and a healthy working environment for nurses, it is necessary to regularly monitor QWL and WAI and take measures to ensure the highest quality of working life. Further longitudinal and mixed-methods research is needed to understand the relationship between QWL, WAI and intention to leave. Full article
