There is minimal research concerning the role of custom-trained artificial intelligence (AI) tools in higher education, with a lack of research concerning the pedagogical qualities of an AI-based personal tutor. To fill this literature gap, we examined how a custom GPT personal tutor shapes key teaching and learning qualities. Using the mixed-methods approach, we aimed to demonstrate preliminary and exploratory empirical evidence concerning the contribution of custom-trained AI tutors to building up students’ competencies. Our research analyzed the subjective assessments of students related to the GPT tutor’s contribution to improving their competencies. Both the qualitative and quantitative empirical results confirmed the positive contribution. In addition, we triangulated the results to evaluate the potential of custom-trained AI chatbots in higher education, focusing on undergraduate business courses. However, the results of this study cannot be generalized to the entire student population of business schools, since the participation in the AI-assisted tutor program was voluntary, attracting only intrinsically motivated students. Sustainable development and the circular economy have become key challenges in the modern food sector, calling for innovative solutions that reduce waste and promote the efficient use of resources. The aim of this study was to develop a functional food product by utilizing by-products from chokeberry processing, thereby contributing to circularity in food systems. The integration of design thinking with fermentation of chokeberry pomace is presented in this study as an approach to developing value-added food ingredients. Qualitative consumer research (focus group interviews, n = 36) identified preferences and expectations regarding functional foods containing by-products. Conducted by an interdisciplinary team, the project followed five stages, involving both qualitative and quantitative research. Liquid surface fermentation was performed using Aspergillus niger, selected for its proven ability to enhance the antioxidant capacity and polyphenol content of plant matrices. The optimal process was 2-day fermentation under controlled pH conditions with glucose supplementation, which significantly enhanced the quality and nutritional value of the final product. Antioxidant activity (ABTS, FRAP, CUPRAC assays), total polyphenols, anthocyanins, and proanthocyanidins were determined, showing significant increases compared to non-fermented controls. The outcome was the development of a dried, fermented chokeberry pomace product that meets consumer expectations and fulfils sustainability goals through waste reduction and innovative reuse of fruit processing by-products. Clinician-Reported Person-Centered Culturally Responsive Practices for Youth with OCD and Anxiety

Background: Exposure-based cognitive behavioral therapy (Ex-CBT) is widely seen as the gold-standard treatment for anxiety and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). Yet, minoritized youth are underrepresented in efficacy studies, raising questions about the applicability of Ex-CBT to minoritized youth. Effectiveness data suggest systematic adaptation of Ex-CBT to address youth culture and context is likely needed, and many clinicians make adaptations and augmentations in practice. However, research on the specific strategies clinicians use to address their youth clients’ culture and context within anxiety and OCD treatment is lacking. In the current study, we assess practice-based adaptations, augmentations, and process-based approaches utilized when delivering treatment to youth for OCD and anxiety in public mental health clinics. Methods: We conducted qualitative interviews with 16 clinicians from both specialty anxiety and general mental health clinics serving youth with anxiety or OCD in the public mental health system. Participating clinicians had a mean age of 32.19 (SD = 5.87) and 69% of therapists identified as female; 69% identified as White, 25% identified as Asian, and 6% as Black or African American. In qualitative interviews, clinicians shared how they addressed clients’ culture and context (e.g., social identities, stressors and strengths related to social identities and lived environment). Thematic analysis identified the strategies clinicians employed to address culture and context. Results: Clinicians reported incorporating culture and context through process-based approaches (e.g., building trust gradually, considering clients’ social identity stressors, engaging in self-awareness to facilitate cultural responsiveness) and through culturally adapting and augmenting treatment to promote person-centered care. Core strategies included proactive and ongoing assessment of clients’ cultural and contextual factors, adapting exposures and augmenting Ex-CBT with strategies such as case management and discussion of cultural context, and taking a systems-informed approach to care. Conclusions: Examining practice-based adaptations, augmentations, and process-based approaches to treatment for minoritized youth with OCD or anxiety can inform efforts to understand what comprises person-centered culturally responsive Ex-CBT. Empirical testing of identified strategies is a needed area of future research. Full article

Background: Midwifery’s Intangible Heritage was officially recognized by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization on 6 December 2023, highlighting that elements of midwifery knowledge and practice, shaped over generations, constitute cultural heritage worth safeguarding. While previous studies have investigated midwives’ perceptions of professional identity, none have done so within the explicit framework of MIH. Objective: this study explored how midwives and student midwives in Cyprus perceive the intangible heritage of their profession and how it relates to their shared professional identity. Methods: A qualitative descriptive study was conducted between April and July 2023. Three focus groups were held, involving 22 participants: 15 registered midwives and 7 student midwives. A semi-structured interview guide consisting of 10 questions was used, developed by the lead author (M.P.) based on the literature and improvisation and finalized with the research team (E.H., S.V., N.M.) after expert input. Thematic analysis was performed inductively to identify recurrent themes. Results: Four major themes emerged: (1) key elements of Midwifery’s Intangible Heritage and their transmission across generations; (2) a sense of shared professional identity; (3) perceived threats to the midwifery profession; and (4) midwives’ expectations for the future of the profession. Conclusions: The findings reflect the historical background of midwifery in Cyprus and its contrast with contemporary practice, particularly within the context of the overmedicalization of birth and societal perceptions of midwifery in the socio-cultural setting. Safeguarding Midwifery’s Intangible Heritage requires both empowering women to seek midwifery-led care and enabling midwives to practice autonomously within their full professional scope. In addition, policymakers and educational bodies must support the preservation of midwives’ core skills through targeted educational curricula, structured mentorship, and continuous professional development. Background: Empowerment during pregnancy is linked to improved maternal and infant health outcomes and greater maternal well-being. Group Antenatal Care (GANC), a participant-centered model of care, promotes empowerment, active engagement, and the deconstruction of hierarchy between participants and care providers. It combines health assessment, interactive learning, and community building. While empowerment is a core concept of GANC, the ways it manifests and the elements that facilitate it remain unclear. Method: We conducted a generic qualitative study across four organizations in Brussels, using multiple data collection methods. This included interviews with 13 participants and 21 observations of GANC sessions, combining both the insider and outsider perspective. An adapted version of the Pregnancy-Related Empowerment Scale (PRES) guided the interviews guide and thematic analysis. Results: We identified seven themes that capture how empowerment occurs in GANC: peer connectedness, provider connectedness, skillful decision-making, responsibility, sense of control, taking action, and gaining voice. Several aspects of GANC contribute to empowerment, particularly the role of facilitators. Conclusions: This study highlights how GANC enhances empowerment during pregnancy through interpersonal, internal, and external processes. Important components within GANC that support this process include the group-based format and the interactive nature of the discussions. The presence of skillful GANC facilitators is an essential prerequisite. In a diverse and often vulnerable context like Brussels, strengthening empowerment through GANC presents challenges but is especially crucial. Full article

In the digital age, online teacher professional development (TPD) has become a key strategy for enhancing instructional quality and ensuring equitable access to continuous learning. This research compares and analyzes Chinese online teacher professional development (TPD) with the United States over a period of ten years, from 2014 to 2024. This study uses a mixed-methods approach based on policy documents, structured surveys, and interviews to investigate how governance regimes influence TPD outcomes for fair education. Both countries experienced a massive expansion of web-based TPD access and engagement, with participation rates over 75% and effectiveness scores over 4.3 by 2024. China focused on fast scaling by way of centralized mandates and investments in infrastructure, while the United States emphasized gradual expansion through decentralized, locally appropriate models. Most indicators had converged by the end of the period, even with these different approaches. Yet, qualitative evidence reveals persisting gaps in functional access and contextual appropriateness, especially in rural settings. Equality frameworks with attention to teacher agency, policy implementation, and digital usability must supplant weak access metrics. A hybrid paradigm presents itself as an attractive means toward building equitable and productive digital TPD environments through the symbiotic integration of China’s successful scalability and the United States’ professional autonomy. The scope and scale of commercial captive lion breeding (CLB) in South Africa have rapidly increased since the 1990s. We conducted a qualitative systematic review using the PRISMA protocol to determine whether CLB provides a sustainable supply side intervention to reduce pressure on wild lion populations. A search was performed using three academic databases for sources published between 2008 and 2023. We collated and reviewed the data using an evaluation framework to determine the potential benefits and threats of CLB in the context of conservation. Among the 126 peer-reviewed and 37 grey literature articles identified, we found evidence suggesting that the framework’s criteria were not fully met, raising concerns that CLB may facilitate the demand for lions, their parts, and derivatives. Our findings further indicate a reasonable cause to doubt that the CLB provides a sustainable supply side intervention to meet the commercial demand for lions, their parts, and derivatives. This could adversely impact conservation of wild lion populations. We conclude that further research is required to effectively evaluate the purported conservation benefits of CLB. These insights may also have implications for the policy and governance of commercial predator breeding operations in South Africa and globally. Full article

Social media has become a vital communication tool for higher education institutions (HEIs) to reach larger targets, attract followers, and engage with diverse audiences. This study conducted a quantitative and qualitative analysis of 4148 Facebook posts from 16 public and private HEIs in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The aim of the study is to evaluate users’ engagement through their reactions to various post characteristics, including format, language, and content type. The posts generated 177,022 emotes, 17,269 shares, and 8374 comments. The results showed that images are an efficient format for boosting interaction, whereas plain text posts did not generate high engagement. The English language was more conducive for generating shares, while Arabic-language posts generated more emotes and likes. The comparative analysis results showed that private HEIs are more active on their Facebook pages than public HEIs. The content analysis suggested that student-related posts generate the highest level of engagement, while announcements and faculty- and research-related posts drive the lowest levels of engagement. These results offer valuable insights into how HEIs can optimize their social media strategies to enhance user engagement. Full article

The goals of the European Union towards the energy transition imply profound changes in the energy field, so as to promote sustainable energy development while fostering economic growth. To achieve these changes, the incorporation of sustainable technologies supporting decentralisation, energy efficiency, renewable energy production, and demand flexibility is of vital importance. Blockchain has the potential to change energy services towards this direction. To optimally exploit blockchain, innovative business models need to be designed, identifying the opportunities emerging from unmet needs, while also considering potential risks so as to take action to overcome them. In this context, the scope of this paper is to examine the opportunities and the risks that emerge from the adoption of blockchain in four innovative business models, while also identifying mitigation strategies to support and accelerate the energy transition, thus proposing optimal approaches of exploitation of blockchain in energy services. The business models concern Energy Performance Contracting with P4P guarantees, improved self-consumption in energy cooperatives, energy efficiency and flexibility services for natural gas boilers, and smart energy management for EV chargers and HVAC appliances. Firstly, the value proposition of the business models is analysed and results in a comprehensive SWOT analysis. Based on the findings of the analysis and consultations with relevant market actors, in combination with the examination of the relevant literature, risks are identified and evaluated through a qualitative assessment approach. Subsequently, specific mitigation strategies are proposed to address the detected risks. This research demonstrates that blockchain integration into these business models can significantly improve energy efficiency, reduce operational costs, enhance security, and support a more decentralised energy system, providing actionable insights for stakeholders to implement blockchain solutions effectively. Furthermore, according to the results, technological and legal risks are the most significant, followed by political, economic, and social risks, while environmental risks of blockchain integration are not as important. Strategies to address risks relevant to blockchain exploitation include ensuring policy alignment, emphasising economic feasibility, facilitating social inclusion, prioritising security and interoperability, consulting with legal experts, and using consensus algorithms with low energy consumption. The findings offer clear guidance for energy service providers, policymakers, and technology developers, assisting in the design, deployment, and risk mitigation of blockchain-enabled business models to accelerate sustainable energy development. The increasing cultural and demographic diversity among higher education students highlights the challenges regarding accessibility and inclusion. The COVID-19 pandemic has accelerated the shift toward flexible, technology-based teaching practices. However, inclusive, and accessible pedagogical practices lack consistency, particularly when supporting students with disabilities or diverse learning needs. This study evaluates the effectiveness of the Learning Design for Flexible Education (FLeD) Tool—a web-based platform developed to support teachers in designing flexible and inclusive learning scenarios. The research adopts a qualitative approach, featuring semi-structured interviews with two Portuguese experts in accessibility and inclusion. The experts analyzed three learning scenarios designed using the FLeD Tool, through the lens of Universal Design for Learning standards. The collected dataset was analyzed using thematic analysis to identify common issues, strengths, and opportunities for improvement. The findings show a gap between institutional policies and their practical application, mainly due to inconsistent teacher training and technical limitations. While the FLeD Tool supports more flexible and inclusive pedagogical designs, experts have identified key shortcomings such as the lack of automated accessibility checks and limited support for specific disabilities. Despite the reduced number of participants (two experts) and dataset (three learning scenarios), which limits the study’s generalisability, the conclusions draw attention to the pivotal role of systematic teacher training, embedded accessibility features and solid institutional policies in bridging the gap between policy aspiration and effective inclusive practice. The Impact of Regional Policies on Chinese Business Growth: A Bibliometric Approach

In the context of both domestic and international economic landscapes, regional policy has emerged as an increasingly influential factor shaping the developmental trajectories of Chinese enterprises. Despite its growing significance, the extant literature lacks a comprehensive and systematically visualized synthesis that encapsulates the scope and trends of research in this domain. This study addresses this critical gap by conducting an integrative bibliometric and qualitative review of the academic output related to regional policy and Chinese firm growth. Drawing on a final dataset comprising 3428 validated academic publications—selected from an initial pool of 3604 records retrieved from the Web of Science Core Collection between 1991 and 2022, the research employs a two-stage methodological framework. In the first phase, advanced bibliometric tools, and software applications, including RStudio, Bibliometrix, VOSviewer, and CitNetExplorer, are utilized to implement techniques such as keyword co-occurrence analysis, thematic clustering, and the tracing of thematic evolution over time. These methods facilitate rigorous data cleansing, breakpoint identification, and the visualization of intellectual structures and emerging research patterns. In the second phase, a targeted qualitative review is conducted to evaluate the influence of regional policies on Chinese firms across three critical stages of business development: start-up, expansion, and maturity. The findings reveal that regional policy interventions generally exert a positive influence on firm performance throughout all stages of development. Notably, a significant concentration of citation activity occurred prior to 2017; however, post-2017, the volume of scholarly publications, journal-level impact (as measured by h-index), and author-level influence experienced a marked increase. Among the 3428 analyzed publications, a substantial portion—2259 articles—originated from Chinese academic institutions, highlighting the strong domestic research interest in the subject. Furthermore, since 2015, there has been a discernible shift in keyword co-occurrence trends, with increasing scholarly attention directed towards sustainable development issues, particularly those related to carbon dioxide emissions and green innovation, reflecting evolving policy priorities and environmental imperatives. This study demonstrates how Structural Topic Modeling (STM) can be used to analyze qualitative student comments in conjunction with quantitative student evaluation of teaching (SET) scores, providing a scalable framework for interpreting student evaluations of teaching. Drawing on 286,203 open-ended comments collected over fourteen years at a large U.S. research university, we identify eleven latent topics that characterize how students describe instructional experiences. Unlike traditional topic modeling methods, STM allows us to examine how topic prevalence varies with course and instructor attributes, including instructor gender, course discipline, enrollment size, and numeric SET scores. To illustrate the utility of the model, we show that topic prevalence aligns with SET ratings in expected ways and that students associate specific teaching attributes with instructor gender, though the effects are relatively small. Importantly, the direction and strength of topic–SET correlations are consistent across male and female instructors, suggesting shared student perceptions of effective teaching practices. Our findings underscore the potential of STM to contextualize qualitative feedback, support fairer teaching evaluations, inform institutional decision-making, and examine the relationship between qualitative student comments and numeric SET ratings. The objective of this study is to create an integrated and sustainability-centered framework to identify optimal locations for wind energy projects in Indonesia. This research employs a novel two-phase multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) framework that combines the strengths of Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA), Fuzzy Analytic Hierarchy Process (FAHP), and Fuzzy Combined Compromise Solution (F-CoCoSo). Initially, DEA is utilized to pinpoint the most promising sites based on a variety of quantitative factors. Subsequently, these sites are evaluated against qualitative criteria such as technical, economic, environmental, and socio-political considerations using FAHP for criteria weighting and F-CoCoSo for ranking the sites. Comprehensive sensitivity analysis of the criteria weights and a comparative assessment of methodologies substantiate the robustness of the proposed framework. The results converge on consistent rankings across methods, highlighting the effectiveness of the integrated approach. Notably, the results consistently identify Lampung, Aceh, and Riau as the top-ranked provinces, showcasing their strategic suitability for wind plant development. This framework provides a systematic approach for enhancing resource efficiency and strategic planning in Indonesia’s renewable energy sector. Full article

Physiological Response to Foliar Application of Antitranspirant on Avocado Trees (Persea americana) in a Mediterranean Environment

Background: The implementation of advanced agronomical strategies, including the use of antitranspirant, in order to mitigate the negative effects of environmental stress, particularly heat stress on plants, has become a focal area of research in the Mediterranean basin. This region is characterized by hot and dry summer that affects plant physiology. Methods: The experiment was carried out in Sicily (South Italy) on 12-year-old avocado cv. Hass grafted onto Walter Hole rootstock. Two subplots each of forty homogenous trees were selected and treated (1) with calcium carbonate (DECCO Shield®) and (2) with water (control) at the following phenological phases: 711, 712 and 715 BBCH. The climatic parameters were recorded throughout the year. Physiological measurements (leaf transpiration, net photosynthesis, stomatal conductance, leaf water potential) were measured at 105, 131 and 168 days after full bloom. Fruit growth was monitored, and physico-chemical analyses were carried out at harvest. Results: The antitranspirant increased photosynthesis and stomatal conductance and reduced leaf transpiration (−26.1%). Fruit growth rate increased during summer, although no morphological and qualitative difference was observed at harvest. PCA highlighted the positive effect of the calcium carbonate on overall plant physiology. Conclusions: Antitranspirant foliar application reduced heat stress effects by improving physiological responses of avocado trees. Full article

Chemometric Approach for Discriminating the Volatile Profile of Cooked Glutinous and Normal-Amylose Rice Cultivars from Representative Japanese Production Areas Using GC × GC-TOFMS

Cooked-rice aroma strongly affects consumer choice, yet the chemical traits distinguishing glutinous rice from normal-amylose japonica rice remain underexplored because earlier studies targeted only a few dozen volatiles using one-dimensional gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC-MS). In this study, four glutinous and seven normal Japanese cultivars were cooked under identical conditions, their headspace volatiles trapped with MonoTrap and qualitatively profiled by comprehensive GC × GC-TOFMS. The two-dimensional platform resolved 1924 peaks—about ten-fold previous coverage—and, together with hierarchical clustering, PCA, heatmap visualization and volcano plots, cleanly separated the starch classes (78.3% cumulative PCA variance; Euclidean distance >140). Volcano plots highlighted 277 compounds enriched in the glutinous cultivars and 295 in Koshihikari, including 270 compounds that were not previously documented in rice. Normal cultivars were dominated by ethers, aldehydes, amines and other nitrogenous volatiles associated with grainy, grassy and toasty notes. Glutinous cultivars showed abundant ketones, furans, carboxylic acids, thiols, steroids, nitro compounds, pyrroles and diverse hydrocarbons and aromatics, yielding sweeter, fruitier and floral accents. These results expand the volatile library for japonica rice, provide molecular markers for flavor-oriented breeding and demonstrate the power of GC × GC-TOFMS coupled with chemometrics for grain aroma research.
