Smart campuses employ advanced digital technologies and intelligent communication systems to enhance educational, operational, and living environments. This study investigates stakeholder perceptions of smart campus priorities in Saudi Arabia through a structured questionnaire administered to students and faculty. The study considered King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals (KFUPM) in Dhahran as a case study in this regard. The survey examined 22 smart campus aspects grouped into six domains: smart education, smart mobility, smart energy and waste management, smart buildings and work environment, smart safety and security, and smart open spaces. The results indicated strong consensus regarding the importance of all domains, with an overall mean rating of 4.3 out of 5.0 and Relative Importance Index (RII) values ranging from 0.77 to 0.91. The highest-ranked aspects included IoT-enabled cooling energy optimization, smart public transportation, smart lighting systems, smart workflow management, e-libraries, and fire prevention and detection systems, reflecting a pronounced emphasis on infrastructure quality, energy efficiency, and operational effectiveness. The findings suggest that smart campus development in Saudi Arabia should prioritize high-impact, user-valued initiatives that align with Vision 2030 objectives including digital transformation. Strategic early investments in smart buildings, energy management, and mobility systems can deliver measurable benefits in this regard. Further research is recommended to consider additional case studies in the Saudi context to ensure that smart campuses remain contextualized and responsive to user needs. Full article

Ice and snow tourism (IST) is a significant global trend, offering Russia opportunities for tourism growth and seasonal diversification. This study investigates the potential of ice and snow art as a distinct subcategory of IST on Lake Baikal. Our research is based on an analysis of academic publications and official policy documents, field surveys conducted in winter 2025, and stakeholder consultations, with the “Olkhon Ice Fest” serving as a case study. The findings indicate a clear shift toward IST, with the number of winter tourists on Olkhon Island increasing by 70% between 2021 and 2024. The festival’s key features—its use of the natural ice landscape, a unique artistic technique, an explicit ecological focus, and strong entrepreneurial initiative—support the development of a conceptual model of IST on Lake Baikal grounded in ecotourism principles. Ensuring the long-term sustainable development of IST in the region requires improved governance, infrastructure, and transport systems, as well as support for green businesses and increased environmental awareness among tourists. This study contributes to the ongoing discourse on sustainable winter tourism by demonstrating the interconnections among environmental sustainability, socioeconomic benefits, and cultural innovation, thereby situating local IST practices within the broader framework of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Growing concerns over greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions have positioned hydrogen fuel cell buses (HFCBs) as a promising alternative for sustainable urban mobility. By eliminating tailpipe emissions and enabling significant reductions in well-to-wheel GHG intensities when hydrogen is sourced from renewables, HFCBs can contribute to improved urban air quality, energy diversification, and alignment with climate goals. Despite these benefits, large-scale adoption faces challenges related to production costs, hydrogen infrastructure, and efficiency improvements across the supply chain. Life cycle assessment (LCA) provides a valuable framework to assess these trade-offs holistically, capturing environmental, economic, and social dimensions of HFCB deployment. However, inconsistencies in system boundaries, functional units, and impact categories highlight the need for more standardized and comprehensive methodologies. This paper examines the potential of hydrogen buses by synthesizing evidence from peer-reviewed studies and identifying opportunities for integration into urban fleets. Findings suggest that when combined with robust LCA approaches, hydrogen buses offer a pathway toward decarbonized, cleaner, and more resilient public transport systems. Strategic adoption could not only enhance environmental performance but also foster innovation, infrastructure development, and long-term economic viability, positioning HFCBs as a cornerstone of sustainable urban transportation transitions. Electric mobility is increasingly recognised as a sustainable transportation solution worldwide. While the economic and environmental aspects of e-mobility have been explored extensively, social dimensions such as equity, accessibility, and inclusiveness remain underexplored. Existing literature on these social aspects is fragmented across disciplines, shaped by varying regional contexts, which complicates efforts to form a coherent understanding of the field. To address this gap, a bibliometric analysis was conducted using the R-studio software via the Biblioshiny app. Version 4.3.0. This analysis systematically maps the intellectual landscape, identifies dominant themes, and highlights critical research gaps at the intersection of e-mobility and social sustainability. A total of 490 publications were extracted from the Scopus database as of 23 March 2025. The findings reveal a sharp increase in scholarly attention since 2018, peaking at 110 publications in 2024. The top-ranked country is China, which has 130 publications. In addition, the research has clustered around four thematic areas: energy and charging infrastructure, social and economic impacts, public policy and regulations, and technological innovations. Despite this growth, persistent gaps remain, particularly concerning social equity, inclusive policy design, socio-economic disparities, and the real-world effects of emerging technologies on vulnerable populations. Future research should specifically explore how e-mobility initiatives can reduce regional access inequalities, generate quality green employment, and ensure that technologies such as vehicle-to-grid systems are equitably deployed to benefit low-income and marginalised populations. People living in rural communities are typically underserved by public transportation services and face challenges in accessing healthcare, jobs, stores, and other destinations. Understanding the lived experiences of people who use public transportation in rural communities can help to inform a more equitable transportation system. This qualitative study gathered the perspectives of community health center employees about the public bus system for Hawai‘i Island, a rural county in the United States. Using a community-engaged research approach, the evaluation team interviewed 10 employees through either in-person small group interviews or online individual interviews between April and July 2023. Transcripts were coded and analyzed using a thematic analysis approach. While all study participants were selected for their interest in commuting to work by bus, most believed the bus was not a reliable or convenient option. Participants shared their experiences about not being able to rely on the bus schedule, feeling unsafe while walking to bus stops or waiting for the bus, and other barriers to using the bus system. Participants also shared their insights about how a reliable bus system would benefit community health center patients who needed transportation to more than just their medical appointments, but also to places like pharmacies, laboratory services, and grocery stores. These findings can be used to initiate discussions around the ways that community health centers can further address transportation as a social determinant of health and inform transportation providers about how to best plan and invest in transportation infrastructure and services to meet the needs of rural populations. Electromobility provides an effective solution for developing countries to reduce dependence on fossil fuels, enhance energy security, and increase environmental sustainability. The current study evaluates the feasibility of implementing electric vehicles (EVs) powered by renewable energy in developing countries. Based on qualitative methods, including expert interviews, it discusses existing transportation systems, the benefits of EVs, and significant constraints such as poor infrastructure, high initial investment, and ineffective policy structures. Evidence further suggests that EV adoption is likely to bring considerable benefits, particularly in cities with high population densities, adequate infrastructure, and supportive regulations that facilitate rapid adoption. Countries like India and Kenya have reduced their fuel import bills and created new jobs. At the same time, cities such as Bogota and Nairobi have seen improved air quality through the adoption of electric public transit. However, the transition requires investments in charging infrastructures and improvements in power grids. Central to this is government backing, whether through subsidy or partnership. Programs like India’s Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Hybrid and Electric Vehicles (FAME) initiative and China’s subsidy program are prime examples of such support. The study draws on expert interviews to provide context-specific insights that are often absent in global EV discussions, while acknowledging the limitations of a small, regionally concentrated sample. These qualitative findings complement international data and offer grounded implications for electromobility planning in developing contexts. It concludes that while challenges remain, tailored interventions and multi-party public–private partnerships can make the economic and environmental promise of electromobility in emerging markets a reality. Urban and population densification have resulted in deteriorating living conditions for populations and the loss of UGSs. The COVID-19 pandemic has exposed the social, economic and environmental vulnerabilities of our societies, but it has also demonstrated the importance of UGSs as intrinsic elements for maintaining the quality of life of the population and making urban spaces sustainable. Due to its considerable area of UGS, the district of Benfica in Lisbon, Portugal, is the object of study. The study focuses on understanding how the proximity of UGS influences the practice of leisure activities for different publics, and how they are reflected in the populations’ lives, exploring the context during the COVID-19 pandemic. It develops a methodology with a mixed-methods approach: (1) literature review, policies, and urban planning; (2) observation methods, mapping and spatial analysis of UGS types; and (3) surveys. The empirical results indicate the importance of proximity to improve the frequency, namely for the elderly and children. The results also demonstrate that the quality (infrastructure and equipment) of UGS, despite having less walking proximity, is an important element to attract people to use the UGS. A general conclusion is that the proximity and accessibility (walking or public transport) are interlinked in both profiles of UGS, demonstrating a relationship between the place of residence, easy access and frequency of UGS in the practice of activities and the self-assessed physical and mental health benefits. Bike-sharing services contribute to reducing emissions and conserving natural resources within urban transportation systems. They also promote public health by encouraging physical activity and generate economic benefits through shorter travel times, lower transportation costs, and decreased demand for parking infrastructure. This paper examines the use of shared micro-mobility services in the Italian cities of Florence and Bologna, based on an analysis of GPS origin–destination data and associated temporal coordinates provided by the RideMovi company. Given the still-limited number of studies on free-floating and electric-scooter-sharing systems, the objective of this work is to quantify the performance of electric bikes and e-scooters in bike-sharing schemes and compare it to traditional, muscular bikes. Trips were reconstructed starting from GPS data of origin and destination of the trip with a shortest path criteria that considers the availability of bike lanes. Results show that e-bikes are from 22 to 26% faster on average with respect to muscular bikes, extending trip range in Bologna but not in Florence. Electric modes attract more users than traditional bikes, e-bikes have from 40 to 128% higher daily turnover in Bologna and Florence and e-scooters from 33 to 62% higher in Florence with respect to traditional bikes. Overall, turnover is fairly low, with less than two trips per vehicle per day. The performance is measured in terms of trip duration, speed, and distance. Further characteristics such as daily turnover by transport mode are investigated and compared. Finally, spatial analysis was conducted to observe demand asymmetries in the two case studies. The results aim to support planners and operators in designing and managing more efficient and user-oriented services. Full article

Urban parks provide critical benefits for public health, mental well-being, and social connection. However, inequities in park access and use persist, particularly among socially and economically vulnerable populations. While previous studies have established that segregation and social vulnerability each contribute to uneven park access, little is known about how these two forces interact to shape real visitation patterns. This study addresses this research gap and answers the research question: How does highway segregation relate to differences in the different aspects of social vulnerability in influencing park access across Austin’s east–west divide? SafeGraph mobility data from 2019 and the Social Vulnerability Index (SVI), which included four themes (i.e., socioeconomic status, household composition, minority status and language, and housing and transportation characteristics), were analyzed through fixed-effects regression models for Austin, Texas. Results show that household composition and minority vulnerabilities have negative associations with park visitation, indicating that areas with more elderly, single-parent, or minority residents visit parks less frequently. Interaction terms reveal that highway segregation functions as a structural barrier that conditions the influence of social vulnerability on park use. Those associated with socioeconomic resources diminish, while the disadvantages linked to household composition and minority status intensify on the east side of I-35, reflecting the cumulative effects of segregation and infrastructural division. These findings confirm that inequities in park access are more pronounced on the east side of the I-35, consistent with the highway’s role in reinforcing segregation. Efforts to strengthen connectivity represent key strategies for advancing equitable park visitation across Austin. Full article

Currently, an active debate is underway among the academic community, urban planners, and policymakers regarding optimal models of urban development, given that the majority of the population now resides in cities. One concept under discussion is the 15 min city, which posits that all urban residents should be able to reach key, frequently used services within a 15 min walk or cycle. Although the literature suggests numerous potential benefits, debate persists about whether such cities would be optimal from the standpoint of sustainable development objectives and residents’ quality of life. The ongoing discussion also concerns the extent to which existing cities are capable of aligning with this concept. This is directly linked to the actual spatial distribution of individual services within the city. The literature indicates a research gap arising from a shortage of robust case studies that would enable a credible assessment of the practical implementation of this idea across diverse cities, countries, and regions. This issue pertains to Poland as well as to other countries. A desirable future scenario would involve comprehensive mapping of all cities, with respect to both the spatial distribution of specific services and related domains such as the quality and coherence of linear infrastructure. This article presents an analysis of the spatial accessibility of basic urban services in the context of implementing the 15 min city concept, using the city of Koszalin (Poland) as a case study. This city was selected due to its representative character as a medium-sized urban centre, both in terms of population and area, as well as its subregional functions within Poland’s settlement structure. Koszalin also exhibits a typical spatial and functional layout characteristic of many Polish cities. In light of growing challenges related to urbanisation, climate change, and the need to promote sustainable mobility, this study focuses on evaluating access to services such as education, healthcare, retail, public transport, and green spaces. The use of Geographic Information System (GIS) tools enabled the identification of spatial variations in service accessibility across the city. The results indicate that only 11% of Koszalin’s area fully meets the assumptions of the 15 min city concept, providing pedestrians with convenient access to all key services. At the same time, 92% of the city’s area offers access to at least one essential service within a 15 min walk. Excluding forested areas not intended for development increases these values to 14% and 100%, respectively. This highlights the extent to which methodological choices in assessing pedestrian accessibility can shape analytical outcomes and the interpretations drawn from them. Moreover, given this article’s objective and the adopted analytical procedure, the assumed pedestrian walking speed is the key parameter. Accordingly, a sensitivity analysis was conducted, comparing the reference scenario (4 km/h) with alternative variants (3 and 5 km/h). This approach demonstrates the extent to which a change in a single parameter affects estimates of urban-area coverage by access to individual services reachable on foot within 15 min. The analysis reveals limited integration of urban functions at the local scale, highlighting areas in need of planning intervention. This article proposes directions for action to improve pedestrian accessibility within the city. Full article

This paper analyzes the potential of hydrogen technologies in transport, placing it within the context of global environmental and energy challenges. Its primary purpose is to evaluate the prospects for the implementation of these technologies at international and national levels, including Poland. This study utilizes a literature review and an analysis of the results of a highly limited, exploratory pilot survey measuring public perception of hydrogen technology in transport. It is critical to note that the survey was conducted on a small, non-representative sample and exhibited a strong geographical bias, primarily collecting responses from Europe (50 people) and North America (30 people). This study also details hydrogen vehicle types (FCEV, HICE) and the essential infrastructure required (HRS). Despite solid technological foundations, the development of hydrogen technology heavily relies on non-technical factors, such as infrastructure development, support policy, and social acceptance. Globally, the number of vehicles and stations is growing but remains limited, with the pace of development correlating with the involvement of countries. The pilot survey revealed a generally positive perception of the technology (mainly due to environmental benefits) but highlighted three key barriers: limited availability of refueling infrastructure—51.5% of respondents strongly agreed on this obstacle, high purchase and maintenance costs, and insufficient public awareness. Infrastructure subsidies and tax breaks were identified as effective incentives. Hydrogen technology offers a potentially competitive and sustainable transport solution, but it demands significant systemic support, intensive investment in large-scale infrastructure expansion, and comprehensive educational activities. Further governmental engagement is crucial. The severe limitations resulting from the pilot nature of the survey should be rigorously taken into account during interpretation. Full article

This study investigates consumer behavior in electric vehicle (EV) adoption, focusing on how factors like convenience, accessibility, technological perception, and cost influence the travel patterns and usage behavior of EV drivers in Thailand. This study aims to address the research gap in the comparative behavior between electric vehicles and public transport in a developing country. Using a quantitative approach, the study collected data via surveys distributed online and face-to-face interviews with a stratified sample of 398 respondents. The survey assessed the relationships between convenience and accessibility, technology perception, cost of ownership, and travel patterns using structural equation modeling (SEM). The findings reveal that convenience and accessibility significantly affect consumer perceptions of technology and the cost of ownership, which, in turn, influences travel patterns. Technology perception and performance serve as partial mediators, suggesting that improving the infrastructure enhances EV adoption. Additionally, the cost of ownership, including long-term savings, positively impacts usage behavior. This study provides key insights for policymakers and urban planners aiming to promote the adoption of EVs. Enhancing charging infrastructure, offering government incentives, and improving public awareness of long-term cost benefits are recommended strategies. These findings are particularly relevant in urban environments and offer guidance for developing infrastructure policies that align with consumer preferences. Full article

Ensuring traffic safety within urban public transport systems is essential for achieving sustainable urban development, particularly in densely populated metropolitan areas. This study investigates the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies to enhance safety performance in closed public transport environments, with a focus on the city of Belgrade as a representative case. The research aims to evaluate how AI-enabled systems can contribute to the early detection and reduction of traffic incidents, thereby supporting broader goals of sustainable mobility, infrastructure resilience, and urban livability. A hybrid methodological framework was developed, combining computer vision, supervised machine learning, and time series analytics to construct a real-time risk detection platform. The system leverages multi-source data—including video surveillance, onboard vehicle sensors, and historical accident logs—to identify and predict high-risk behaviors such as harsh braking, speeding, and route adherences across various public transport modes (buses, trams, trolleybuses). The AI models were empirically assessed in partnership with the Public Transport Company of Belgrade (JKP GSP Beograd), revealing that the most accurate models improved incident detection speed by over 20% and offered enhanced spatial identification of network-level safety vulnerabilities. Additionally, routes with optimized AI-driven driving behavior demonstrated fuel savings of up to 12% and a potential reduction in emissions by approximately 8%, suggesting promising environmental co-benefits. The study’s findings align with multiple United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities) and SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure). Moreover, the research addresses ethical, legal, and governance implications surrounding the use of AI in public infrastructure, emphasizing the importance of privacy, transparency, and inclusivity. The paper concludes with strategic policy recommendations for cities seeking to deploy intelligent safety solutions as part of their digital and green transitions in urban mobility planning. Gulf cities have embarked on ambitious public transport infrastructure initiatives in recent decades to foster more livable and sustainable cities. This investigation explores the interpretations and implementation of Transit-Oriented Development (TOD) principles in two prototypical urban districts: Doha’s West Bay, Qatar, and Riyadh’s King Abdullah Financial District (KAFD), Saudi Arabia. By following a comparative case study approach, the study explores how retrofitted (West Bay) and purpose-built (KAFD) TOD configurations fare regarding land use mix, density, connectivity, transit access, and environmental responsiveness. The comparative methodology was selected to specifically capture the spatial, climatic, and socio-economic complexities of TOD implementation in hyper-arid urban environments. Based on qualitative evidence from stakeholder interviews, spatial assessments, and geospatial indicators—such as metro access buffers, building shape compactness, and TOD proximity classification—the investigation reflects both common challenges and localized adaptations in hot-desert Urbanism. It emerges that, while benefiting from integrated planning and multimodal connectivity, KAFD’s pedestrian realm is delimited by climatic constraints and inactive active transport networks. West Bay, on the other hand, features fragmented public spaces and low TOD cohesion because of automotive planning heritages. However, it holds potential for retrofit through infill development and tactical Urbanism. The results provide transferable insights that can inform TOD strategies in other Gulf and international contexts facing similar sustainability and mobility challenges. By finalizing strategic recommendations for urban livability improvement through context-adaptive TOD approaches in Gulf cities, the study contributes to the wider discussion of sustainable Urbanism in rapidly changing environments and supplies a reproducible assessment frame for future TOD planning. This study contributes new knowledge by advancing a context-adaptive TOD framework tailored to the unique conditions of hyper-arid Gulf cities. Full article

Urban rail transit (URT) is becoming an important component of a modern city’s transportation infrastructure, which greatly improves the overall efficiency of urban mobility. However, it remains unclear whether URT systems stimulate economic growth through agglomeration effects or inadvertently hinder productivity through fiscal crowding-out effects. To address the question, we analyzed panel data from 26 Chinese cities from 2007 to 2020 through the theory of public service ecosystems (PSE) to interpret the effects of URT construction and operation on the economy from the dual perspectives of value creation and value destruction. We found that URT construction follows the law of diminishing marginal returns, whereas operational efficiency is positively associated with economic growth. Furthermore, URT construction usually exhibits stronger economic benefits in the central and western regions of China, whereas the optimization of operational efficiency is more effective in the eastern regions. Our findings offer phase-specific strategies for policymakers: prioritizing network expansion for emerging URT systems and formulating service innovation roadmaps for mature systems. Full article
