This essay examines two hybrid poetic texts that emerged from a period of feminist activism in U.S. and global poetry communities from 2014 to 2017: the collaboratively, anonymously authored “No Manifesto” (2015) and the radically revised second edition of the book of poetry and visual art YOU DA ONE by Jennif(f)er Tamayo. “No Manifesto” and YOU DA ONE embrace the hybrid tactics of collectivity, incongruity, and nonresolution as ways of protesting sexism and sexual violence in poetry communities. Synthesizing theories of hybridity from poetry criticism as well as immigrant and borderlands studies, the essay defines hybridity as a literary representation of cultural positions forcefully imposed upon subjects. Born out of the domination of sexual and state violence, hybridity marks the wound that remakes the subject, who develops strategies for resistance. By refusing to play by the rules of poetic or social discourse—the logics of domination that would have them be singular, cohesive, and compliant—Tamayo and the authors of “No Manifesto” insist on alternative ways of performing activism, composing literature, and entering the public sphere. These socially engaged, hybrid poetic texts demonstrate the power of the collective to disrupt the social and literary status quo. Full article

This article traces the historical evolution of mural painting as a medium of cultural expression from prehistoric cave art to contemporary street interventions. Adopting a diachronic and interdisciplinary approach, it investigates how muralism has developed across civilizations in relation to techniques, symbolic systems, social function, and its embeddedness in architectural and urban contexts. The analysis is structured around key historical periods using emblematic case studies to examine the interplay between materiality, iconography, and socio-political meaning. From sacred enclosures and civic monuments to post-industrial walls and digital projections, murals reflect shifting cultural paradigms and spatial dynamics. This study emphasizes how mural painting, once integrated into sacred and imperial architecture, has become a tool for public participation, protests, and urban storytelling. Particular attention is paid to the evolving relationship between wall painting and the spaces it inhabits, highlighting the transition from permanence to ephemerality and from monumentality to immediacy. This article contributes to mural studies by offering a comprehensive framework for understanding the technical and symbolic transformations of the medium while proposing new directions for research in the context of digital urbanism and cultural memory. This paper examines the political discourse of South Korean conservative Christianity, focusing on its alignment with far-right ideologies that undermine both democratic norms and the theological integrity of faith. Triggered by recent constitutional crises involving former President Suk-yeol Yoon, far-right Protestant groups have engaged in mobilisations marked by hate speech, disinformation, and theological politicisation. Drawing upon Heinrich Bedford-Strohm’s model of public theology, the study critiques this trend and argues for a reconfiguration of Christian public engagement toward justice, inclusion, and rational dialogue. It further explores the blurred boundaries between conservative and far-right Christian movements, the distortion of the public sphere, and the impact of digital misinformation. Ultimately, the paper proposes a theological and ethical roadmap for restoring the credibility of Christianity in South Korea’s pluralistic democracy. Full article

Interpretation of the New Testament (NT) in general and the Pauline corpus in particular still appears to be at a crossroads. Scholars continue to publish articles and monographs in binary opposition to one another. The terminology used to designate the overarching perspectives of these binary publications sharply contrasts a “traditional” perspective (Protestant in general, and Lutheran in particular) with a variously named “new” or “radical new” perspective. Most recently, beyond the imprecise “new” terminology, the non-traditional perspective is being referred to as the “post-supersessionist”, “nonsupersessionist”, or “within Judaism” perspective and is still strongly being contested. Historically speaking, these antithetical perspectives cannot both be completely correct. Arguably, then, the time has come to explore what the study of Kuhnian paradigms might reveal about this state of affairs in NT scholarship. Most important, in proffering a twofold hermeneutical way forward that is focused on better understanding the emic perspective of the texts that we interpret—to the extent humanly possible—it is hoped that we might become more keenly aware of the ethical implications of our paradigms, terminology, and exegesis for those who rely on our work for their understanding and appropriation of the Scriptures in their everyday living. This article stems from the PRIN GOV_REL (Urban Governance of Interreligious Dialogue) research project carried out in four Italian cities in 2023–2025 and reports on some preliminary results of the empirical enquiry held in the city of Brescia. The Brescia area is characterised by high rates of residents with an immigrant background and a consolidated presence of religious minorities (Muslim, Orthodox, Sikh, Hindu and Protestant groups), many recognised centres (mosques, temples and Christian non-Catholic churches) and a significant commitment of ethnic–religious communities to local public life. This paper examines the creation of grassroots-level interreligious dialogue, seen as a communicative process. The empirical evidence is based on material collected by participant observations and semi-structured interviews regarding four initiatives that occurred in 2024. A sociocultural analysis outlines the communicative frame: text; context; aims; acts; interlocutors and their power/freedom of expression; interactions; results. The article examines the communicative pattern of each initiative, considering an intercultural orientation and a pluralistic model of interfaith dialogue. It seeks to answer the following questions: what was the fundamental message that the promoters wanted to convey? How do the single actors communicate their perspective of religious “others”, and what results did they achieve or not achieve? The analysis leads to identifying the patterns that facilitate and/or hamper dialogue, taking into account misunderstandings and “cul-de-sac” aspects. Final recommendations highlight the recurrent breaking points that should be prevented and some premises to guarantee successful communication between members of different religions in multicultural urban spaces. While digital religion and digital protest can ideally serve the common good, religious nationalist and fundamentalist movements have exploited these tools to disrupt the social fabric and create dangerous political outcomes. This paper examines how religious communicators within Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP) and Alternative for Germany (AfD) perceive and enact their responsibility within digital spaces, leveraging the power of “networked communities” and the collective identity of the digital “crowd” to advance their agendas of religious fundamentalism and political conservatism. Bypassing traditional media, groups like the AfD and TLP exploit digital religion to build communities, spread propaganda that merges religion with national identity, frame political issues as religious mandates, and mobilize collective action. Campbell’s concept of the “networked community” demonstrates how digital technologies form decentralized, fluid, and global religious communities, distinct from traditional, geographically bound ones. Both the TLP and AfD have tapped into this new digital religious space, shaping and mobilizing political and religious identities across virtual borders. Gerbaudo’s idea of the “digital crowd” complements this by examining how collective action in the digital age reshapes mass mobilization, with social media transforming how political movements operate in the 21st century. Although the AfD’s platform is not overtly religious, the party strategically invokes ethno-Christian identity, framing opposition to Islam and Muslim immigration as a defense of German cultural and Christian values. Similarly, the TLP promotes religious nationalism by advocating for Pakistan’s Islamic identity against secularism and liberalism and calling for strict enforcement of blasphemy laws. Recognizing digital spaces as tools co-opted by religious nationalist movements, this paper explores how communicators in these movements understand their responsibility for the social and long term consequences of their messages. Using Luhmann’s systems theory—where communication is central to social systems—this paper analyzes how the TLP and AfD leverage individuals’ need for purpose and belonging to mobilize them digitally. By crafting emotionally charged experiences, these movements extend their influence beyond virtual spaces and into the broader public sphere. Finally, this paper will reflect on the theological implications of these dynamics both on and offline. How do religious communicators in digital spaces reconcile their theological frameworks with the social impact of their communication? Can digital religious communities be harnessed to foster social cohesion and inclusivity instead of exacerbating social divisions? Through this lens, the paper seeks to deepen our understanding of the intersection between digital religion, political mobilization, and theological responsibility in the digital age. Full article

This article presents objective air quality conditions in a residential area of Lodz in Poland (East–Central Europe) in comparison to the subjective opinions of local residents regarding air pollution. The article focuses on the housing estate in Widzew East, in the vicinity of which is located a municipal thermal power plant (CHP power plant—local designation EC4). The aim of this study was to obtain information on the subjective assessment of air quality in the selected area and further compare it with the actual state. It was assumed that what is factual does not coincide with what the residents perceive. Discrepancies in the subjective assessment of air quality and the actual state can have significant consequences. These include the omission of personal protection and prevention, implemented at the household level and thus exposing oneself to unnecessary exposure, inadequate targeting of public action, e.g., protests against alleged rather than actual hazards, and inappropriate targeting of policies at the local government level. This view grows out of the traditions of social geography and the geography of perception. The social surveys were conducted in 2022—a self-administered questionnaire and unstructured interview in 2023. They revealed relatively low interest among the residents in air quality. The analyses also showed that the residents associated air pollution more with smog, and hence with car traffic and individual heating systems in single-family homes, than with the thermal power plant operating in close proximity. On the other hand, objective measures of air pollution showed that emissions from the thermal CHP power plant had a direct negative effect on air quality in the housing estate. The theoretical and methodological framework of socio-spatial analysis is set by behavioral geography and geography of perception. Full article

This paper examines the correlation between rising trade protectionism—an indicator of economic deglobalization—and key communication and social variables from 2009 to 2023. Drawing on data from Global Trade Alert, Nexis Uni, Google searches, and Facebook (via CrowdTangle), we investigate the prevalence of “deglobalization” discourse, language entropy, political polarization, protests, and digital authoritarianism. The analysis is framed by Optimal Information Theory, World Systems Theory, and other social science perspectives to explain how deglobalization may potentially reshape public communication. The results suggest that greater trade protectionism is associated with increased mentions of deglobalization, higher language entropy (i.e., less dominance of English), amplified political polarization, more frequent protest activity, and heightened digital authoritarian measures. This study examines the role of creative resistance, or “artivism”, in Nigeria’s #EndSARS movement, a youth-led campaign against police brutality that peaked in October 2020. Drawing on Robert Entman’s Framing Theory, it analyzes how different art forms reframed public perceptions of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) and countered government efforts to delegitimize the protests. Using a qualitative approach, the research employs purposive sampling of Twitter-sourced art forms to explore how these pieces exposed systemic injustice, amplified protester voices, and mobilized local and global support. Findings reveal that artivists personalized SARS brutality, dismantled narratives portraying protesters as criminals, and invoked moral urgency through evocative symbolism, leveraging social media’s virality to sustain the movement’s momentum. The study highlights SARS’ paradoxical role as a state-sanctioned yet reviled entity, demonstrating how creative expressions clarified this ambiguity into a clarion call for reform. By situating #EndSARS within Nigeria’s protest legacy, this analysis underscores art’s transformative power in digital-age activism, offering a blueprint for resistance against oppression. It contributes to scholarship on social movements by illustrating how art and technology intersect to challenge power, preserve collective memory, and demand accountability, with implications for future struggles in Nigeria and beyond. The 7 October 2023 attack by Hamas on Israeli civilians and Israel’s ensuing assault in Gaza caused immense public upheaval in Berlin, home of Europe’s largest Palestinian diaspora. This article shows how Palestinian families intergenerationally navigate the ensuing losses, protests and school unrests, which took place not just in response to the devastation in Gaza and the West Bank, but also to Germany’s unwavering support for Israel, while suppressing pro-Palestinian voices. For the families, this intensification of the protracted Israeli–Palestinian conflict deepened a state of chronic crises based on traumas, longstanding insecurity and increasing xenophobia in Germany. Drawing from 11 years of ethnographic research in Berlin–Neukölln, I show how events since 7 October drastically changed the neighborhood’s ethos, forcing a communal front of silence. The silence was a reaction to fears of being misrepresented in the media and threats of deportation and school expulsions. Examining prevailing sociopolitical influences, and what happens within families and between generations, I illustrate how families became more insular in their mourning and grief yet found ways to navigate their political views intergenerationally. My argument scrutinizes sociopolitical processes leading to increased polarization and highlights the importance of schools as safe spaces for identity formation and contemplation. Full article

From Crisis to Algorithm: Credit Delinquency Prediction in Peru Under Critical External Factors Using Machine Learning

Robust credit risk prediction in emerging economies increasingly demands the integration of external factors (EFs) beyond borrowers’ control. This study introduces a scenario-based methodology to incorporate EF—namely COVID-19 severity (mortality and confirmed cases), climate anomalies (temperature deviations, weather-induced road blockages), and social unrest—into machine learning (ML) models for credit delinquency prediction. The approach is grounded in a CRISP-DM framework, combining stationarity testing (Dickey–Fuller), causality analysis (Granger), and post hoc explainability (SHAP, LIME), along with performance evaluation via AUC, ACC, KS, and F1 metrics. The empirical analysis uses nearly 8.2 million records compiled from multiple sources, including 367,000 credit operations granted to individuals and microbusiness owners by a regulated Peruvian financial institution (FMOD) between January 2020 and September 2023. These data also include time series of delinquency by economic activity, external factor indicators (e.g., mortality, climate disruptions, and protest events), and their dynamic interactions assessed through Granger causality to evaluate both the intensity and propagation of external shocks. The results confirm that EF inclusion significantly enhances model performance and robustness. Time-lagged mortality (COVID MOV) emerges as the most powerful single predictor of delinquency, while compound crises (climate and unrest) further intensify default risk—particularly in portfolios without public support. Among the evaluated models, CNN and XGB consistently demonstrate superior adaptability, defined as their ability to maintain strong predictive performance across diverse stress scenarios—including pandemic, climate, and unrest contexts—and to dynamically adjust to varying input distributions and portfolio conditions. Post hoc analyses reveal that EF effects dynamically interact with borrower income, indebtedness, and behavioral traits. This study provides a scalable, explainable framework for integrating systemic shocks into credit risk modeling. The findings contribute to more informed, adaptive, and transparent lending decisions in volatile economic contexts, relevant to financial institutions, regulators, and risk practitioners in emerging markets. The Chilean feminist movements challenged the state and educational authorities regarding recurring instances of gender-based violence that were perpetuated and silenced. Reports of harassment and sexual abuse led to a broader critique about the ways in which education plays a part in the establishment of a model that sustains gender gaps. University authorities responded with institutional policies, establishing protocols and formal spaces to address these issues. However, these measures have revealed new problems. Given that the institutional response to the feminist uprising illuminated a range of nuances, obstacles, and new tensions related to issues of punishment, reparation, and justice, we identify four critical points of these political dissonances that emerged in Chilean universities following this cycle of protests: 1. problems in the definition and naming of violence and experiences of grievance; 2. public exposure of grievances, including “funas” (public shaming) and punitive practices; 3. disputes over the meaning of the slogan “non-sexist education”; 4. challenges in integrating the feminist complaint within the university community. Based on the analysis of slogans, key protest moments, and a comprehensive literature review, we argue that these tensions may hinder feminism’s transformative potential while simultaneously enabling a valuable internal critique. Research on climate activism has predominantly focused on affluent regions of the Global North, often emphasizing public participation and protest while overlooking the experiences of youth in other contexts. This study addresses this gap by exploring everyday environmental activism and eco-literacy among young people in Bulgaria, a post-communist society. It challenges the prevailing top-down political frameworks that marginalize diverse forms of political participation. This study argues that young people’s environmental awareness, shaped by their lived experiences, reflects their engagement with consumerism and climate change and is expressed through various modes of participation, including the victim, voter, rejecter, and interpreter forms of agency. Drawing on ethnographic data from interviews, mapping activities, and short essays, this research examines how environmental identities are enacted in mundane ways that reflect young people’s levels of eco-literacy, focusing on a cohort from diverse socioeconomic backgrounds in both urban and rural contexts. The findings reveal the performances of everyday environmental activism and shed light on the liminal political positions youth navigate in their daily lives. This research contributes to education studies by offering insights into how young people’s everyday environmental activism and eco-literacy, rooted in their subjectivities, transcend traditional educational frameworks and provide a deeper understanding of how they learn to become environmental subjects in under-represented contexts. In the early nineteenth century, the London Missionary Society (LMS) established missionary outposts and printing presses in Southeast Asia, publishing a number of scientific periodicals and books, which subsequently informed the preaching policy on the Chinese mainland. In the early nineteenth century, the London Missionary Society (LMS) established missionary outposts and printing presses in Southeast Asia, publishing a number of scientific periodicals and books, which subsequently informed the preaching policy on the Chinese mainland. The motivation and discursive strategies of the LMS’s dissemination of scientific knowledge in Southeast Asia are worthy of in-depth investigation. This study employs the socio-cognitive discourse analysis approach to investigate the mental model and discursive strategies of LMS’s two representative scientific publications in Southeast Asia, namely the Chinese Monthly Magazine and Memoir of Things Seen and Heard by Travelling West around the World, thus providing insights into the rationale behind the scientific discourse of Protestant missionaries in nineteenth-century China. It is found that the scientific discourse of the LMS in Southeast Asia was to modify the comprehension of world formation held by local Chinese migrants, thereby influencing their perception of European scientific strength and Christian belief. This study is an interdisciplinary investigation of Protestant history in Southeast Asia, and the methodology of critical discourse analysis offers a new way of explaining history, which complements the conventional historical analysis. The Religious Enlightenment and the English Jesus-Centered Deists

In most of the twentieth century, the Enlightenment was seen as a time when religious belief was incompatible with Enlightenment values of reason, toleration, and science. David Sorkin maintains that many religious Protestants, Catholics, and Jews emphasized toleration and reason while participating in the secular public sphere. Sorkin asserts that these people were part of the religious Enlightenment. This article focuses on a group of ten English deists who identified themselves as deists, claimed to be Christian, and devoted their writings to explaining their concept of true Christianity. This article argues that these ten deists, whom I label “Jesus-centered deists”, were much more religious than other deists. Like the Protestants, Catholics, and Jews that Sorkin considers part of the religious Enlightenment, these deists emphasized toleration and used reason to defend their conception of God and genuine Christianity. Furthermore, these deists participated in discussions in the public sphere about secular Enlightenment concerns. Unlike stereotypical Enlightenment deists, these Jesus-centered deists did not believe in an inactive and impersonal God. Instead, they believed in a loving and kind God who performed miracles and made revelations. They also emphasized developing a closer relationship with God through prayer.
