Food waste has emerged as a critical worldwide concern, resulting in environmental deterioration and economic detriment. Bio-based natural polymer coatings and films have emerged as a sustainable solution to food preservation challenges, particularly in reducing postharvest losses and extending shelf life. Compared to their synthetic counterparts, these polymers, such as chitosan, starch, cellulose, proteins, and alginate, are derived from renewable sources that are biodegradable, safe, and functional. Within this context, this review examines the various bio-based natural polymer coatings and films as biodegradable, edible alternatives to conventional packaging solutions. It examines the different fabrication methods, like solution casting, electrospinning, and spray coating, and incorporates antimicrobial agents to enhance performance. Emphasis is placed on their mechanical, barrier, and antimicrobial properties, their application in preserving fresh produce, how they promote food safety and environmental sustainability, and accompanying limitations. This review highlights the importance of bio-based natural polymer coatings and films as a promising, eco-friendly solution to enhancing food quality, safety, and shelf life while addressing global sustainability challenges. Background and Objectives: Posterior chamber phakic implantable contact lenses (Phakic-ICL) are widely used for refractive correction due to their efficacy and safety, including minimal corneal endothelial cell loss. The Collamer-based EVO+ Visian implantable contact lens (ICL), manufactured from Collamer, which is a blend of collagen and hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA), has demonstrated excellent long-term biocompatibility and optical clarity. Recently, hydrophilic acrylic Phakic-ICLs, such as the Implantable Phakic Contact Lens (IPCL), have been introduced. This study investigated the material differences among Phakic-ICLs and their interaction with fibronectin (FN), which has been reported to adhere to intraocular lens (IOL) surfaces following implantation. The aim was to compare Collamer, IPCL, and LENTIS lenses (used as control) in terms of FN distribution and cell adhesion using a small number of explanted Phakic-ICLs. Materials and Methods: Three lens types were analyzed: a Collamer Phakic-ICL (EVO+ Visian ICL), a hydrophilic acrylic IPCL, and a hydrophilic acrylic phakic-IOL (LENTIS). FN distribution and cell adhesion were evaluated across different regions of each lens. An in vitro FN-coating experiment was conducted to assess its effect on cell adhesion. Results: All lenses demonstrated minimal FN deposition and cellular adhesion in the central optical zone. A thin FN film was observed on the haptics of Collamer lenses, while FN adhesion was weaker or absent on IPCL and LENTIS surfaces. Following FN coating, Collamer lenses supported more uniform FN film formation; however, this did not significantly enhance cell adhesion. Conclusions: Collamer, which contains collagen, promotes FN film formation. Although FN film formation was enhanced, the low cell-adhesive properties of HEMA resulted in minimal cell adhesion even with FN presence. This characteristic may contribute to the long-term transparency and biocompatibility observed clinically. In contrast, hydrophilic acrylic materials used in IPCL and LENTIS demonstrated limited FN interaction. These material differences may influence extracellular matrix protein deposition and biocompatibility in clinical settings, warranting further investigation. Full article

The increasing demand for reliable food preservation strategies has driven the development of active biopolymer-based films as alternatives to conventional packaging. This study evaluates Nisin/Na-EDTA-enriched alginate and gelatin films for preserving Dosidicus gigas (jumbo squid) during refrigerated storage. Films were formulated using alginate, gelatin 220/280 Bloom, and glycerol, and characterized in terms of their mechanical, optical, and biodegradation properties. Their effectiveness for the preservation of squid fillets was tested, focusing on weight loss and color stability during refrigerated storage. The incorporation of Nisin/Na-EDTA significantly modified the film’s properties: elongation at break increased from 4.95% (alginate control) to 65.13% (gelatin 280 active), while tensile strength decreased from 8.86 MPa to 0.798 MPa (alginate). Transparency was reduced by up to 2.5 times in active agent-incorporated alginate films. All films degraded within 14 days under soil exposure, with polysaccharide-based films degrading faster. In refrigerated storage, squid fillets coated with gelatin–alginate films containing Nisin showed reduced weight loss (24.05%) compared with uncoated controls (66.36%), particularly in skin-on samples. Color parameters and whiteness index were better preserved with gelatin-based coatings. These results demonstrate the potential of gelatin–alginate films with Nisin/Na-EDTA as biodegradable, active packaging to extend the shelf life of high-protein seafood. Full article

Biomaterials (films, foils, fibers, coatings) based on proteins are becoming increasingly important due to the growing applications for which pork and beef gelatins are used. Alternative types of gelatins (poultry or fish), which have not yet been sufficiently tested, represent a high potential. This study looks at the effect of different UV exposure times on chicken gelatin films with added glycerol. The gelatin was prepared using a unique enzymatic hydrolysis process. The quality of the UV-exposed films was compared with gelatin films not exposed to UV light. Radiation-induced crosslinking improved the mechanical and physical properties of the films. The UV crosslinked films are stabilized at a degree of swelling from 700 to 900%; moreover, they extend their dissolution to more than 7 days while maintaining their original shape. In contrast, non-crosslinked films swell and dissolve in water faster. Further, the effect of UV radiation on the water vapor permeability and color of the films was monitored. Water vapor permeability decreased by 2.5 times with increasing crosslinking time for 30% and 40% glycerol content, and the yellowness of the irradiated samples increased with exposure time in the interval from 24 to 28. Using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, the differences in the amount of bonding based on irradiation time were analyzed. As a result of crosslinking, the intensity of existing bonds increased. Thermal properties were verified through differential scanning calorimetry and thermogravimetric analysis. The results proved that chicken gelatin is suitable for preparing films in foods and medicine. Applying UV radiation to crosslink gelatin films is an alternative to traditionally used chemical crosslinkers. Full article

This study aimed to develop and characterize bio-nanocomposite coatings by incorporating titanium nanoparticles (TiO2 NPs) (30–50 nm) (10 mg/L), which have antimicrobial effects, and rosmarinic acid (RA) (0.005 mg/mL), which has strong antioxidant and antimicrobial activities, into the chitosan matrix using the solvent casting method. The prepared bio-nanocomposite coatings were characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM-EDX), and atomic force microscopy (AFM). In the XRD analysis, the crystal structure of the bio-nanocomposite coating material was evaluated, but the absence of the expected TiO2 NPs diffraction peak in the coating containing TiO2 NPs was discussed in detail. The TiO2 NPs decreased the crystallinity, compared to the control film, while rosmarinic acid increased the order of the molecular matrix. FT-IR analysis showed the presences of O–H, C=O, and C–O bonds in the coating materials, and the changes in the positions and intensities of the bands observed in the FTIR spectra of the bio-nanocomposite coatings (CHT and CHTRA) proved that TiO2 NPs and RA were successfully integrated into the chitosan matrix. The broadening and flattening of the bands belonging to OH groups (3288–3356 cm−1) indicated that the hydrogen bonds in the chitosan matrix were strengthened during the formation of the bio-nanocomposite structure. The bands representing the C=O stretching vibrations at 1659 cm−1 (amide I) and the N–H bending vibrations at 1558 cm−1 (amide II) indicated protein-based features in the structure of chitosan and confirmed the existence of the bio-nanocomposite structure. The SEM-EDX analysis showed that TiO2 NPs were distributed homogeneously on the chitosan surface, but there was aggregation in places. The AFM images revealed that when TiO2 NPs and RA were added to the chitosan matrix, the surface topography became more homogeneous, and a topographic pattern was formed in the range of 0–20.4 nm. Therefore, it is concluded that these bio-nanocomposite coatings can be used in antimicrobial surfaces and food packaging areas and should be optimized with different antioxidant and nanoparticle combinations in the future. An enteric coating plays a crucial role in preventing the disintegration of pharmaceutical dosage forms in the stomach. This is particularly important for drugs unstable at an acidic pH or designed to act in the small intestine. While conventional synthetic polymers have been widely used for enteric coatings, there is growing interest in exploring naturally derived proteins as an alternative. This study focused on two natural polymers: soy protein and whey protein isolates, first by determining the gastro-resistance properties of films prepared from these proteins. Then, appropriate casting solutions were developed to create polymeric films, and their resistance to acidic pH was evaluated using disintegration tests. Second, crate drug pellets coated with the most effective protein-based film were previously prepared, and their performance was assessed using the USP apparatus I (basket). The results demonstrated that the coated pellets (SA and SAG) exhibited excellent gastro-resistance properties. Specifically, the percentage release of the coated pellets met the USP criteria: less than 10% release in the first 2 h under acidic conditions, followed by at least 80% release within 45 min in the buffer phase. In contrast, uncoated pellets showed immediate release, with over 69% of the dye released during the initial 2 h. Notably, the SA and SAG-coated pellets demonstrated remarkable resistance to acidic pH, releasing only 1% and approximately 2% of the dye faster than uncoated pellets. These findings highlight the potential of SA and SAG coating films for efficient delayed release or enteric coating applications. Full article

Bambara groundnut (BG)-based films containing seed coat extract at different concentrations were prepared and characterized. BG seed coat extract (BGSCE) had a total phenolic content of 708.38 mg GAE/g dry extract. BGSCE majorly consisted of quercetin 3-galactoside, rutin, and azaleatin 3-arabinoside. BGSCE exhibited ABTS and DPPH radical scavenging activities (ABTS-RSAs and DPPH-RSAs), a ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP), and an oxygen radical absorbance capacity (ORAC) of 66.44, 4.98, 4.42, and 0.91 mmol Trolox equivalent/g dry extract, respectively. When BGSCE at various concentrations (0–8%, w/w, protein content) was incorporated into the BG protein isolate (BG-PI)-based films, film containing 4% BGSCE exhibited higher thickness, tensile strength, elongation at break, water vapor and UV-light barrier properties, and a*-value (redness) than the control film (p < 0.05). Films containing BGSCE had greater ABTS-RSA, FRAP, and ORAC than the control film (p < 0.05). An FTIR analysis elucidated that the proteins interacted with phenolic compounds in BGSCE. Nonetheless, less thermal stability was attained in films added with BGSCE. Hence, the addition of BGSCE possessing antioxidant activity exhibited an important role in properties and characteristics of BG-PI-based film. The developed active film could be applied as packaging material possessing antioxidant property for food applications. Full article

In this paper, the humidity-sensing characteristics of gelatin were compared with those of poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) at L-band (1 ~ 2 GHz) microwave frequencies. A capacitive microwave sensor based on a defected ground structure with a modified interdigital capacitor (DGS-MIDC) in a microstrip transmission line operating at 1.5 GHz without any coating was used. Gelatin is a natural polymer based on protein sourced from animal collagen, whereas PVA is a high-sensitivity hydrophilic polymer that is widely used for humidity sensors and has a good film-forming property. Two DGS-MIDC-based microwave sensors coated with type A gelatin and PVA, respectively, with a thickness of 0.02 mm were fabricated. The percent relative frequency shift (PRFS) and percent relative magnitude shift (PRMS) based on the changes in the resonant frequency and magnitude level of the transmission coefficient for the microwave sensor were used to compare the humidity-sensing characteristics. The relative humidity (RH) was varied from 50% to 80% with a step of 10% at a fixed temperature of around 25 °C using a low-reflective temperature and humidity chamber manufactured with Styrofoam. The experiment’s results show that the capacitive humidity sensitivity of the gelatin-coated microwave sensor in terms of the PRFS and PRMS was higher compared to that of the PVA-coated one. In particular, the sensitivity of the gelatin-coated microwave sensor at a low RH from 50% to 60% was much greater compared to that of the PVA-coated one. In addition, the relative permittivity of the fabricated microwave sensors coated with PVA and gelatin was extracted by using the measured PRFS and the equation was derived by curve-fitting the simulated results. The change in the extracted relative permittivity for the gelatin-coated microwave sensor was larger than that of the PVA-coated one for varying the RH. Full article

Poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) offers a promising platform for non-invasive and gentle cell detachment. However, conventional PNIPAM-based substrates often suffer from limitations including limited stability and reduced reusability, which hinder their widespread adoption in biomedical applications. In this study, PNIPAM copolymer films were formed on the surfaces of glass slides or silicon wafers using a two-step film-forming method involving coating and grafting. Subsequently, a comprehensive analysis of the films’ surface wettability, topography, and thickness was conducted using a variety of techniques, including contact angle analysis, atomic force microscopy (AFM), and ellipsometric measurements. Bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BMMSCs) were then seeded onto PNIPAM copolymer films prepared from different copolymer solution concentrations, ranging from 0.2 to 10 mg·mL−1, to select the optimal culture substrate that allowed for good cell growth at 37 °C and effective cell detachment through temperature reduction. Furthermore, the stability and reusability of the optimal copolymer films were assessed. Finally, AFM and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) were employed to examine the surface morphology and elemental composition of the copolymer films after two rounds of BMMSC adhesion and detachment. The findings revealed that the surface properties and overall characteristics of PNIPAM copolymer films varied significantly with the solution concentration. Based on the selection criteria, the copolymer films derived from 1 mg·mL−1 solution were identified as the optimal culture substrates for BMMSCs. After two rounds of cellular adhesion and detachment, some proteins remained on the film surfaces, acting as a foundation for subsequent cellular re-adhesion and growth, thereby implicitly corroborating the practicability and reusability of the copolymer films. This study not only introduces a stable and efficient platform for stem cell culture and harvesting but also represents a significant advance in the fabrication of smart materials tailored for biomedical applications. Packaging for food products is particularly important to preserve product quality and shelf life. The most used materials for food packaging are plastic, glass, metal, and paper. Plastic films produced based on petroleum are widely used for packaging because they have good mechanical properties and help preserve the characteristics of food. However, environmental concerns are leading the trend towards biopolymers. Films and coatings based on biopolymers have been extensively studied in recent years, as they cause less impact on the environment, can be obtained from renewable sources or by-products, are relatively abundant, have a good coating and film-forming capacity, are biodegradable and have nutritional properties that can be beneficial to human health. Whey protein-based films have demonstrated good mechanical resistance and a good barrier to gases when at low relative humidity levels, in addition to demonstrating an excellent barrier to aromatic compounds and especially oils. The use of whey proteins for films or coatings has been extensively studied, as these proteins are edible, have high nutritional value, and are biodegradable. Thus, the main objective of this document was to review new methodologies to improve the physicochemical properties of whey protein films and coatings. Importance will also be given to the combinations of whey proteins with other polymers and the development of new techniques that allow the manipulation of structures at a molecular level. The controlled release and mass transfer of new biomaterials and the improvement of the design of films and packaging materials with the desired functional properties can increase the quality of the films and, consequently, broaden their applications. The effect of wheat gluten (WG)/phenolic extracts (PE) coating on the storage qualities of salmon fillets was studied. Porphyra haitanensis, belonging to red algae, possesses abundant phenolic compounds. Films were prepared by incorporating phenolic extracts (0, 0.5%, 0.75%, and 1.0%, w/v) from Porphyra haitanensis to WG. The PE showed strong antioxidant activities by scavenging DPPH and ABTS radicals. The increased addition of PE to WG film significantly increased tensile strength compared to that of WG film, but reduced water vapor permeability. The quality of salmon fillet stored at 4 °C from 0 to 9 days was decreased due to the oxidation of lipid and protein. However, the increased addition of PE to WG significantly reduced pH, TVB-N, TBA, peroxide value, total sulfhydryl content, and carbonyl content of salmon fillet compared to control salmon fillet. In addition, the increased addition of PE to WG also significantly improved water holding capacity, hardness, chewiness, and springiness of salmon fillet during storage compared to those of control salmon fillet. Taken together, this study showed phenolic extracts from Porphyra haitanensis improved wheat gluten-based film properties and further enhanced the qualities of coated salmon fillet during storage. The interactions between proteins and chlorogenic acid (CGA) have gained significant attention in recent years, not only as a promising approach to modify the structural and techno-functional properties of proteins but also to enhance their bioactive potential in food systems. These interactions can be divided into covalent (chemical or irreversible) and non-covalent (physical or reversible) linkages. Mechanistically, CGA forms covalent bonds with nucleophilic amino acid residues of proteins by alkaline, free radical, and enzymatic approaches, leading to changes in protein structure and functionality, such as solubility, emulsification properties, and antioxidant activity. In addition, the protein–CGA complexes can be obtained by hydrogen bonds, hydrophobic and electrostatic interactions, and van der Waals forces, each offering unique advantages and outcomes. This review highlights the mechanism of these interactions and their importance in modifying the structural, functional, nutritional, and physiological attributes of animal- and plant-based proteins. Moreover, the potential applications of these protein–CGA conjugates/complexes are explored in various food systems, such as beverages, films and coatings, emulsion-based delivery systems, and so on. Overall, this literature review provides an in-depth overview of protein–CGA interactions, offering valuable insights for future research to develop novel protein-based food and non-food products with improved nutritional and functional characteristics. Herein, we report a transdermal patch prepared using an ionic liquid-based solid in oil (IL-S/O) nanodispersion and a pressure-sensitive adhesive (PSA) to deliver the macromolecular antigenic protein, ovalbumin (OVA). The IL-S/O nanodispersion and a PSA were first mixed at an equal weight ratio, then coated onto a release liner, and covered with a support film. To evaluate the effect of the PSA, three types of PSAs, DURO-TAK 87-4098, DURO-TAK 87-4287, and DURO-TAK 87-235A, were used to obtain the corresponding IL-S/O patches SP-4098, SP-4287, and SP-235A, respectively. The prepared IL-S/O patches were characterized for surface morphology, viscoelasticity, and moisture content. In vitro skin penetration and in vivo immunization studies of the IL-S/O patches were performed using Yucatan micropig skin and the C57BL/6NJc1 mice model, respectively. The SP-4098 and SP-4287 delivered 5.49-fold and 5.47-fold higher amounts of drug compared with the aqueous formulation. Although both patches delivered a similar amount of drug, SP-4287 was not detached fully from the release liner after 30 days, indicating low stability. Mice immunized with the OVA-containing SP-4098 produced a 10-fold increase in anti-OVA IgG compared with those treated with an aqueous formulation. These findings suggested that the IL-S/O patch may be a good platform for the transdermal delivery of antigen molecules. Full article

With the increasing awareness of plastic pollution in the environment and the accumulation of microplastics in water, a significant amount of research and development is ongoing to replace the synthetic plastics in packaging and coatings. In this work, we explored the blends of carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) and washed cottonseed meal (CSM, consisting mostly of cottonseed protein) as agro-based, biodegradable, and sustainable alternatives to plastics. Glycerol was found to be a suitable plasticizer for these blends. The blends of CMC/CSM were produced as single-layer films from 50 to 90 μm in thickness, consisting of different proportions of the components and plasticizer. The evaluated properties included opacity, water vapor permeability, mechanical properties, thermogravimetric analysis, moisture sorption analysis, and water swelling test. Higher percentages of CSM in the blend resulted in higher opacity and lower water vapor permeation rates. The mechanical strength waned with lower levels of CMC. Possible applications for these blends include their use as water-soluble food packaging and coatings and as dissolvable bags and pouches for detergents and agrochemicals. Full article

Edible hydrogel coatings or films in comparison to conventional food packaging materials are characterized as thin layers obtained from biopolymers that can be applied or enveloped onto the surface of food products. The use of lipid-containing hydrogel packaging materials, primarily as edible protective coatings for food applications, is recognized for their excellent barrier capacity against water vapor during storage. With the high brittleness of waxes and the oxidation of different fats or oils, highly stable agents are desirable. Jojoba oil obtained from the jojoba shrub is an ester of long-chain fatty acids and monovalent, long-chain alcohols, which contains natural oxidants α, β, and δ tocopherols; therefore, it is resistant to oxidation and shows high thermal stability. The production of hydrogel films and coatings involves solvent evaporation, which may occur in ambient or controlled drying conditions. The study aimed to determine the effect of drying conditions (temperature from 20 to 70 °C and relative humidity from 30 to 70%) and jojoba oil addition at the concentrations of 0, 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, and 2.0% on the selected physical properties of hydrogel edible films based on whey protein isolate. Homogenization resulted in stable, film-forming emulsions with bimodal lipid droplet distribution and a particle size close to 3 and 45 µm. When higher drying temperatures were used, the drying time was much shorter (minimum 2 h for temperature of 70 °C and relative humidity of 30%) and a more compact structure, lower water content (12.00–13.68%), and better mechanical resistance (3.48–3.93 MPa) of hydrogel whey protein films were observed. The optimal conditions for drying hydrogel whey protein films are a temperature of 50 °C and an air humidity of 30% over 3 h. Increasing the content of jojoba oil caused noticeable color changes (total color difference increased from 2.00 to 2.43 at 20 °C and from 2.58 to 3.04 at 70 °C), improved mechanical elasticity (the highest at 60 °C from 48.4 to 101.1%), and reduced water vapor permeability (the highest at 70 °C from 9.00·10−10 to 6.35·10−10 g/m·s·Pa) of the analyzed films. The observations of scanning electron micrographs showed the heterogeneity of the film surface and irregular distribution of lipid droplets in the film matrix. Full article
