Calcium phosphates are one of the main materials used in biomedicine for bone regeneration purposes. To improve the properties of biocompatible β-Ca3(PO4)2, doping by bioactive, antibacterial is actively used, as well as luminescent ions. Co-doped phosphates Ca8−xSrxZnEu(PO4)7 with a β-Ca3(PO4)2 (β-TCP)-type structure were synthesized through solid-state synthesis. The β-TCP-type structure was confirmed using X-ray powder diffraction and FTIR spectroscopy. Photoluminescence data, including excitation and emission spectra, decay curves, lifetime values and quantum yields, were collected for all samples. Ca8−xSrxZnEu(PO4)7 phosphates exhibit strong red-emission due to 4f-4f transitions of Eu3+ ions in disordered oxygen surrounding, with quantum yields reaching 54%. The phosphates demonstrated biocompatibility through MTT assay, with successful differentiation of aMSCs into the osteogenic lineage. Antibacterial activity was tested against four bacteria (E. coli, S. aureus, P. aeruginosa, and E. faecalis) and a fungus (C. albicans). It was found that the samples demonstrated antibacterial properties. The growth of E. coli and E. faecalis is significant inhibited by Ca8−xSrxZnEu(PO4)7 samples with 0 ≤ x ≤ 6.0. Analysis of mixed salt solubility using Eu3+ ions as a fluorescent probe showed that increasing Sr2+ concentration in Ca8−xSrxZnEu(PO4)7 delays both β-TCP phase resorption and HAP phase precipitation. These results demonstrate the potential of Ca8−xSrxZnEu(PO4)7 phosphates for bioimaging and bone healing control. Full article

Highly luminescent carbon quantum dots (CQDs) and copper-doped CQDs (Cu-CQDs) were synthesized from Asafoetida powder using a one-pot hydrothermal method. The structural, morphological, and optical properties of the synthesized CQDs were characterized via microscopic and spectroscopic techniques. Photoluminescence studies revealed that CQDs exhibited maximum emission at 450 nm under 335 nm excitation with a quantum yield of 37%, while Cu-CQDs showed a red-shifted emission at 455 nm under 330 nm excitation and a significantly enhanced quantum yield of 73.4%. As a proof of concept for potential biomedical and surface-coating applications, the antimicrobial activity of both CQDs was evaluated against Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus). Cu-CQDs exhibited superior antibacterial efficacy, with a minimum inhibitory concentration of 0.3 mg mL−1. Furthermore, Cu-CQDs were immobilized on polyvinyl chloride (PVC) surface, and fluorescence microscopy confirmed their antibacterial effectiveness, demonstrating their potential for functionalized antimicrobial coatings. In this paper, we present a simple solvothermal method to synthesize highly fluorescent metal-free elemental selenium quantum dots (SeQDs) using cost-effective bulk selenium powder. The SeQDs exhibit a small and uniform size, excellent aqueous dispersibility, a high photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) of 19.3% with stable fluorescence, and scalable production with a 7.2% yield. Owing to the inner filter effect (IFE), these SeQDs function as a highly effective nanoprobe for Cr(VI) detection, exhibiting exceptional sensitivity (detection limit: 145 nM) and selectivity over a wide linear range (5–105 μM), along with rapid response kinetics. Moreover, SeQDs show low cytotoxicity and efficient cellular uptake, enabling cell imaging and intracellular Cr(VI) monitoring. Significant fluorescence quenching in Cr(VI)-exposed cells confirms the potential of SeQDs as a viable fluorescent nanoprobe for Cr(VI) detection in complex cellular environments. This work thus not only establishes a simple method for the preparation of fluorescent SeQDs but also develops a promising fluorescent nanoprobe for cell imaging and Cr(VI) sensing. Full article

Stimulus-responsive inorganic–organic hybrid metal halides (IOMHs) have shown great potential in applications such as sensing and anti-counterfeiting. IOMHs can undergo a variety of structural changes when triggered by humidity; however, relevant reports of structural dimensionality change from zero dimension (0D) to one dimension (1D) are rare. This study investigates the synthesis, structure, and properties of two antimony-based IOMHs, namely 0D-(Mp)3SbCl6·MeCN and 1D-(Mp)2SbCl5 (Mp = protonated morpholine; MeCN = acetonitrile). Photophysical characterizations show that (Mp)3SbCl6·MeCN, when being excited at 375 nm, exhibits typical self-trapped exciton triplet state broad-band emission, with a peak at 620 nm and a quantum yield as high as 75.06%. Under humid conditions, the 0D structure of (Mp)3SbCl6·MeCN undergoes a phase transition, leading to the 1D structure of (Mp)2SbCl5. This transition is accompanied by fluorescence quenching. X-ray powder diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, and thermogravimetric analysis confirm the phase transition process and its reversibility. Based on the high contrast of fluorescence before and after phase transition, (Mp)3SbCl6·MeCN is demonstrated as an ideal material for fluorescence water sensing, capable of detecting trace amounts of water in tetrahydrofuran with a detection limit of 0.2% v/v. Developing a new type of circularly polarized luminescent active small organic molecule that combines high fluorescence quantum yield and luminescence dissymmetric factor in both solution and solid state is highly challenging but promising. In this context, we designed and synthesized a unique triarylborane-based [2.2]paracyclophane derivative, m-BPhANPh2-Cp, in which an electron-accepting [(2-dimesitylboryl)phenyl]ethynyl group and an electron-donating N,N-diphenylamino group are introduced into two different benzene rings of [2.2]paracyclophane. Owing to the electronic effect of these two substituents, this compound can display charge-transfer emission with large Stokes shifts (∆υ = 4.23 − 8.20 × 103 cm−1) and fair quantum yields (ΦF = 0.15 − 0.37) in solutions. In addition, this compound can emit strong blue fluorescence in the solid state with quantum yields that are even much higher than in solution (ΦF up to 0.64 in powder and spin-coated film). Moreover, the enantiomeric forms of m-BPhANPh2-Cp can show strong CPL signals in both dilute solution and solid state with |glum|s up to 9.6 × 10−3 and 5.4 × 10−3, respectively. Thus, it is possible to achieve tunable CPL from blue to yellow in solution with high BCPLs ranging from 56.7 to 26.6 M−1 cm−1 and intense blue CPL combing high ΦF and |glum| in the solid state. We report herein that bis(tricyclic) aromatic enes (BAEs) consisting of 6-6-6-membered frameworks such as acridine, xanthene, thioxanthene, and thioxanthene-S,S-dioxide act as a new class of organic luminophores that exhibit blue-to-green fluorescence in the solid state and in polymer film with good to excellent quantum yields. The BAEs were prepared by the palladium-catalyzed double cross-coupling reaction of phenazastannines or 10,10-dimethyl-10H-phenothiastannin with 9-(dibromomethylene)xanthene, 9-(dibromomethylene)thioxanthene, or 9-(dibromomethylene)-9H-thioxanthene-10,10-dioxide. Microcrystals or powder samples of the BAEs exhibited brilliant fluorescence with good to high quantum yields (Φ = 0.45–0.88). Furthermore, more efficient emission of blue-to-green light (Φ = 0.59–0.91) was observed for the BAEs dispersed in the poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) films. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations suggest that the photo-absorption of the (thio)xanthene moiety-containing BAEs proceeds via π–π* transitions, whereas the optical excitation of 10,10-dioxido-9H-thioxanthene moiety-containing BAEs involves an intramolecular charge transfer from the acridine/thioxanthene part to the electron-accepting 10,10-dioxido-9H-thioxanthene moiety. The liquid-phase method is the most commonly utilized strategy for synthesizing fluorescent carbon quantum dots (CQDs). However, the liquid-phase synthesis of CQDs faces challenges such as low yield, complex purification, and the use of toxic solvents, which limit large-scale production and practical applications. In this study, fluorescent CQDs with a high product yield of 78% were synthesized using glucose as a carbon source through a green and facile one-step solid-phase approach, without solvents or post-treatment. A systematic study of the structure and fluorescence properties of the synthesized CQDs was conducted using various characterization techniques. The results indicated that the mean size of obtained CQDs was 4.1 nm, and that their surface had abundant oxygen-containing functional groups, resulting in favorable water solubility. The synthesized CQDs exhibited excitation-dependent fluorescence, with optimal excitation and emission wavelengths at 358 and 455 nm, respectively. Additionally, the CQDs solution showed bright blue fluorescence under 365 nm UV light, with a quantum yield of 6.21% and a fluorescence lifetime of 3.02 ns. This study offers valuable insights into the green and efficient synthesis of fluorescent CQDs powder. Full article

Perovskite as an emerging semiconductor luminescent material has attracted widespread attention due to its simple preparation, high luminescence quantum yield, high color purity, tunable spectrum, and ability to cover the entire visible light band. However, due to the influence of water or other highly polar solvents, oxygen, temperature, and radiation, perovskite nanocrystals will aggregate or collapse in the lattice, eventually leading to luminescence quenching. This study starts from the postprocessing of perovskite, uses methyl methacrylate as the monomer and TPO as the photoinitiator, and encapsulates the perovskite powder prepared by the hot injection method through ultraviolet light initiation. A method is proposed to improve the luminescence and crystal structure stability of perovskite. By eliminating the influence of environmental factors on perovskite nanocrystals through the dense structure formed by organic polymers, the resistance of perovskite to strong polar solvents such as water will be greatly improved, and it has great potential in the protection of perovskite. Finally, by changing the proportion of halogen elements in the perovskite resin to change the color of the luminescent resin, a fluorescent coating emitting light in all visible light bands is prepared. Fluorescent coatings are widely used in life and industry fields such as plastics, sol, and paper. Full article

Fluorescent carbon dots (CDs) are a new type of photoluminescent nanomaterial. Solid-state CDs usually undergo fluorescence quenching due to direct π-π* interactions and superabundant energy resonance transfer. Therefore, the preparation of solid-state fluorescent CDs is a challenge, especially the preparation of long wavelength solid-state CDs. In this research, long wavelength emission CDs were successfully synthesized by solvothermal methods, and the prepared CDs showed good hydrophobicity. The composite solid-state CDs/PVP (Polyvinyl pyrrolidone) can emit strong red fluorescence, and the quantum yield (QY) of the CDs/PVP powder reaches 18.9%. The prepared CDs/PVP solid-state powder was successfully applied to latent fingerprint detection. The results indicate that the latent fingerprints developed by CDs/PVP powder have a fine definition and high contrast visualization effect, which proves that the prepared CDs/PVP has great application potential in latent fingerprint detection. This study may provide inspiration and ideas for the design of new hydrophobic CDs. Full article

An effective fluorescent probe (mSiO2-N-CDs) was prepared by embedding N-CDs into mesoporous silica via a simple one-pot hydrothermal reaction and applied to the detection of dopamine (DA). Mesoporous silica not only provided a skeleton to prevent the aggregation of N-CDs but also a medium for the centrifugal collection of N-CDs, avoiding the need for dialysis and freeze-drying. The formation process, phase composition, morphology, and luminescence properties of the composite were studied in detail. The synthesized mSiO2-N-CDs possessed spherical morphology, a smooth surface, and a diameter of approximately 150 nm. The fluorescence results indicated that mSiO2-N-CDs emitted intense blue color fluorescence at 465 nm under the optimal excitation of 370 nm. Because the mesoporous silica effectively inhibited the self-quenching caused by the aggregation of N-CDs, the quantum yield of solid mSiO2-N-CDs powder reached 32.5%. Furthermore, the emission intensity of the solid mSiO2-N-CDs remained constant for 28 days. The good sensitivity and selectivity of mSiO2-N-CDs for DA enabled the establishment of a rapid, simple, and sensitive DA detection method. The linear range was 0–50 µM and the limit of detection was calculated to be 107 nM. This method was used for the determination of DA in urine, with recovery rates ranging between 98% and 100.8%. In addition, the sensing mechanism was characterized by fluorescence lifetime decay and UV–VIS spectral analysis. Full article

The investigation encompassed the characterization of the phase purity, morphology, elemental composition, and photoluminescence behavior of Ba0.5Sr0.5Al2O4: xEu2+ nanoparticles. Under excitation by 303 nm and 365 nm ultraviolet light, the nanoparticles exhibited blue-green emission arising from the 4f65d→4f7 transition of Eu2+ ions. The optimal doping concentration was determined to be 2%. Notably, the nanoparticles demonstrated fluorescence lifetimes and quantum yields of 1010 ns (λex = 303 nm), 112 ns (λex = 365 nm), 10.5%, and 10.3%, respectively. Additionally, a comprehensive analysis of the band structure and electronic density of states was conducted, revealing a theoretical direct band gap of 4.05 eV for the Ba0.5Sr0.5Al2O4 host. In addition, the prepared fluorescent powder can be used to prepare fluorescent flexible films. This film does not change the characteristic emission of Eu2+ ions and has more stable physicochemical properties, which may be more suitable for use in harsh environments. Also, the fluorescent powder can be blended with polyacrylic acid to form colorless anti-counterfeiting ink that can be applied to banknotes as an anti-counterfeiting mark. A clover pattern was successfully printed using screen-printing technology, proving its potential application in the field of anti-counterfeiting. Full article

A series of long-afterglow luminescent materials (SrAl2O4: Eu2+ (SAOE), SrAl2O4: Eu2+, Dy3+ (SAOED) and SrAl2O4: Eu2+, Dy3+, Gd3+ (SAOEDG)) was synthesized via the combustion method. Temperature and concentration control experiments were conducted on these materials to determine the optimal reaction temperature and ion doping concentration for each sample. The crystal structure and luminescent properties were analyzed via X-ray diffraction (XRD), photoluminescence (PL), and afterglow attenuation curves. The outcomes demonstrate that the kind of crystal structure and the location of the emission peak were unaffected by the addition of ions. The addition of Eu2+ to the matrix’s lattice caused a broad green emission with a central wavelength of 508 nm, which was attributed to the characteristic 4f65d1 to 4f7 electronic dipole, which allowed the transition of Eu2+ ions. While acting as sensitizers, Dy3+ and Gd3+ could produce holes to create a trap energy level, which served as an electron trap center to catch some of the electrons produced by the excitation of Eu2+ but did not itself emit light. After excitation ceased, this allowed them to gently transition to the ground state to produce long-afterglow luminescence. It was observed that with the addition of sensitizer ions, the luminous intensity of the sample increased, and the afterglow duration lengthened. The elemental structure and valence states of the doped ions were determined with an X-ray photoelectron spectrometer (XPS). Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) were used to characterize the samples. The results show that the sample was synthesized successfully, and the type and content of ions in the fluorescent powder could be determined. The fluorescence lifetime, quantum yield, bandgap value, afterglow decay time, and coordinate position in the coherent infrared energy (CIE) diagram of the three best sample groups were then analyzed and compared. Combining the prepared phosphor with ink provides a new idea and method for the field of anti-counterfeiting through screen printing. Full article

Green emitting long afterglow phosphor SrAl2O4: Eu2+, Dy3+ was synthesized via the combustion method. The physical phase analysis was carried out by X-ray diffraction, the results show that the introduction of Eu2+ into the lattice of the matrix resulted in a broad green emission centered at 508 nm, which is ascribed to the characteristic 4f65d1 to 4f7 electronic dipole allowed transition of Eu2+ ions. The doping of Eu2+ and Dy3+ did not change the physical phase of the crystals. Dy3+, as a coactivator, does not emit light itself, but can generate holes to form a trap energy level, which acts as an electron trap center to capture some of the electrons generated by the excitation of Eu2+. After excitation has ceased, let them gradually to transfer to the ground state for long afterglow luminescence. Then, we investigate the optical characterizations of different samples excited by X-ray. We found that SrAl2O4: Eu2+, 0.5% Dy3+ has this higher luminous intensity and afterglow. Its fluorescence lifetime is about 720 ns, and its quantum yield can reach 15.18%. Through search engine marketing (SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), it has been proved that the sample has been successfully synthesized and its component content has been confirmed. The Eg value calculated from the diffuse reflectance spectrum is 4.61eV. The prepared SrAl2O4: Eu2+, Dy3+ luminescent powder is combined with Polydimethylsiloxane substrate for anticounterfeiting application, which provides a novel idea and method for the development of the anticounterfeiting field. New fluorescent dyes containing an assembled 1,4-dihydroazolo[5,1-c][1,2,4]triazine (DAT) core and an isoxazole ring were synthesized through a reaction between diazopyrazole or diazoimidazoles and isoxazolyl-derived enamines in mild conditions. The photophysical characteristics (maxima absorption and emission, Stokes shifts, fluorescent quantum yields, and fluorescence lifetimes) of the new fluorophores were obtained. The prepared DATs demonstrated emission maxima ranging within 433–487 nm, quantum yields within 6.1–33.3%, and a large Stokes shift. The photophysical characteristics of representative DAT examples were studied in ten different solvents. Specific (hydrogen bonds) and non-specific (dipole–dipole) intermolecular and intramolecular interactions were analyzed using XRD data and spectral experiments. Solvatochromism was analyzed using Lippert–Mataga and Dimroth–Reichardt plots, revealing the relationship between the DAT structure and the nature of solute–solvent interactions. The significant advantages of DATs are the fluorescence of their powders (QY up to 98.7%). DAT-NMe2 10 expressed bright aggregation-induced emission (AIE) behavior in DMSO and THF as the water content increased. The numerous possible variations of the structures of the heterocycles included in the DATs, as well as substituents, create excellent prospects for adjusting their photophysical and physicochemical properties. The flavin derivatives 10-methyl-isoalloxazine (MIA) and 6-fluoro-10-methyl-isoalloxazine (6F-MIA) were incorporated in two alternative metal-organic frameworks, (MOFs) MIL-53(Al) and MOF-5. We used a post-synthetic, diffusion-based incorporation into microcrystalline MIL-53 powders with one-dimensional (1D) pores and an in-situ approach during the synthesis of MOF-5 with its 3D channel network. The maximum amount of flavin dye incorporation is 3.9 wt% for MIA@MIL-53(Al) and 1.5 wt% for 6F-MIA@MIL-53(Al), 0.85 wt% for MIA@MOF-5 and 5.2 wt% for 6F-MIA@MOF-5. For the high incorporation yields the probability to have more than one dye molecule in a pore volume is significant. As compared to the flavins in solution, the fluorescence spectrum of these flavin@MOF composites is broadened at the bathocromic side especially for MIA. Time-resolved spectroscopy showed that multi-exponential fluorescence lifetimes were needed to describe the decays. The fluorescence-weighted lifetime of flavin@MOF of 4 ± 1 ns also corresponds to those in solution but is significantly prolonged compared to the solid flavin dyes with less than 1 ns, thereby confirming the concept of “solid solutions” for dye@MOF composites. The fluorescence quantum yield (ΦF) of the flavin@MOF composites is about half of the solution but is significantly higher compared to the solid flavin dyes. Both the fluorescence lifetime and quantum yield of flavin@MOF decrease with the flavin loading in MIL-53 due to the formation of various J-aggregates. Theoretical calculations using plane-wave and QM/MM methods are in good correspondence with the experimental results and explain the electronic structures as well as the photophysical properties of crystalline MIA and the flavin@MOF composites. In the solid flavins, π-stacking interactions of the molecules lead to a charge transfer state with low oscillator strength resulting in aggregation-caused quenching (ACQ) with low lifetimes and quantum yields. In the MOF pores, single flavin molecules represent a major population and the computed MIA@MOF structures do not find π-stacking interactions with the pore walls but only weak van-der-Waals contacts which reasons the enhanced fluorescence lifetime and quantum yield of the flavins in the composites compared to their neat solid state. To analyze the orientation of flavins in MOFs, we measured fluorescence anisotropy images of single flavin@MOF-5 crystals and a static ensemble flavin@MIL53 microcrystals, respectively. Based on image information, anisotropy distributions and overall curve of the time-resolved anisotropy curves combined with theoretical calculations, we can prove that all fluorescent flavins species have a defined and rather homogeneous orientation in the MOF framework. In MIL-53, the transition dipole moments of flavins are orientated along the 1D channel axis, whereas in MOF-5 we resolved an average orientation that is tilted with respect to the cubic crystal lattice. Notably, the more hydrophobic 6F-MIA exhibits a higher degree order than MIA. The flexible MOF MIL-53(Al) was optimized essentially to the experimental large-pore form in the guest-free state with QuantumEspresso (QE) and with MIA molecules in the pores the structure contracted to close to the experimental narrow-pore form which was also confirmed by PXRD. In summary, the incorporation of flavins in MOFs yields solid-state materials with enhanced rigidity, stabilized conformation, defined orientation and reduced aggregations of the flavins, leading to increased fluorescence lifetime and quantum yield as controllable photo-luminescent and photo-physical properties.
