Kaolinite-group minerals and kaolin rock occupy a distinct position in cultural heritage conservation. They occur both as original constituent materials and as components of conservation treatments. This review critically synthesizes the scattered literature on their use in the conservation of cultural heritage objects. It highlights the structure–property–performance relationships, including composition, particle morphology, pore structure, water retention, sorption properties, moisture transport, and residue formation on heritage substrates. Kaolin-based poultices are useful for desalination and cleaning where pore-size distribution, drying conditions, and application parameters can be controlled. Kaolinite and metakaolinite are mainly used in consolidation, the first acting as mineral filler/scaffold and the second as a reactive pozzolanic component, while halloysite is a potential nanocontainer for controlled release. This review highlights that kaolinite-group minerals should not be treated as generic clays, inert fillers, or automatically sustainable additives and particular attention should be given to issues of reversibility, formulation design, performance testing, long-term durability, and residue assessment, as well as to emerging data on toxicity and environmental impact. Future research should prioritize comparative testing, long-term field monitoring, and predictive modelling, alongside clearer assessment of health, environmental and sustainability impacts, to support evidence-based, sustainable use of kaolinite-group minerals in cultural heritage conservation practice. Kamala is a traditional Thai herbal knee poultice containing phenylbutenoid compounds with potent anti-inflammatory activity; however, its conventional form is inconvenient to use and exhibits variability in active compound content. This study aimed to develop a Kamala-based nanoemulsion gel to enhance dermal delivery and improve formulation consistency. Oils, surfactants, and co-surfactants were screened for their solubilization efficiency of (E)-1-(3,4-dimethoxyphenyl)butadiene (DMPBD) and (E)-4-(3′,4′-dimethoxyphenyl)but-3-en-1-ol (Compound D) using GC–MS. Pseudo-ternary phase diagrams were constructed to identify isotropic regions, and nanoemulsions with different Smix ratios were prepared by ultrasonication. Droplet size, polydispersity index (PDI), and short-term stability were evaluated. The optimized nanoemulsion was incorporated into a gel, and in vitro release was assessed using Franz diffusion cells. Coconut oil exhibited the highest solubilization capacity for both markers. A Tween 80:n-butanol system (2:1) generated the largest isotropic region (22.88%). The optimized formulation (Kamala extract:coconut oil:Smix:water = 1:2:50:47) showed droplet sizes of 77.92 ± 8.34 nm at 0 h and 130.89 ± 29.16 nm at 72 h, with PDI < 0.20. The nanoemulsion gel prepared with Aristoflex Velvet® (1% w/w) was transparent and physically stable. Franz diffusion studies demonstrated enhanced cumulative release and flux of Compound D in PBS containing 1% Tween 80. These findings indicate that the Kamala nanoemulsion gel is a promising topical delivery system for phenylbutenoid compounds in knee osteoarthritis. Full article

The carved lacquer horse-hoof-shaped box excavated from Yulin, Shaanxi Province, represents a typical example of lacquerware preservation in the arid environment of northern China, exhibiting multiple deterioration phenomena, including substrate deformation, lacquer film peeling, and pigment fading. To systematically analyze its structural composition and craftsmanship features, this study employed multiple analytical techniques, including ultra-depth microscopy, scanning electron microscopy with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDS), confocal laser micro-Raman spectroscopy (Raman), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and pyrolysis-gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (Py-GC/MS). Based on these analyses, a targeted conservation protocol was developed. Results revealed that the carved lacquer horse-hoof-shaped box has a wooden substrate structure, with the lacquer ash layer composed of mixed materials, including calcium carbonate (CaCO3), quartz (SiO2), and hydroxyapatite (Ca10(PO4)6(OH)2). The lacquer film layer contains Chinese lacquer and plant oils, with cinnabar applied as surface decoration. Based on these findings, a stratified reinforcement conservation strategy was proposed: under dynamic monitoring with optical fiber sensors and three-dimensional scanning, the wooden substrate was reinforced with moisture-curable polyurethane (MCPU), the lacquer ash layer was strengthened with acrylic emulsion (Primal AC33), aged areas were restored with nano calcium hydroxide (Ca(OH)2) aqueous dispersion, and polyethylene glycol (PEG 400) poultice application was implemented to restore the flexibility of the lacquer film. This research significantly enhanced the integrity and stability of the carved lacquer horse-hoof-shaped box, providing practical evidence and technical references for the scientific conservation of lacquerware excavated from arid regions of northern China. Introduction: Snakebite envenomation is recognized by the World Health Organization (WHO) as a neglected tropical disease. In Colombia, snakebites are frequent due to the diversity of ecosystems and snake species, and children represent a particularly vulnerable population. Objective: This study aimed to characterize the epidemiological and clinical behavior of snakebite envenomation in the pediatric population and to identify factors associated with its severity through the application of a multinomial logistic regression model. Methods: An exploratory analysis was conducted on 170 pediatric patients reported to the Public Health Surveillance System (SIVIGILA) and treated at San Jerónimo Hospital in Montería (HSJ). Sociodemographic and clinical data were collected, and a multinomial logistic regression model was applied to identify risk factors associated with the severity of envenomation. Results: Most cases occurred in children over 12 years of age (51.8%), and males were the most affected. The lower limbs were the most common site of the bite (87.6%). Bothrops was the main genus responsible. Non-medical practices, such as herbal poultices and potions, were reported in 28.2% of cases. Clinically, moderate envenomation was the most frequent (48.2%), with edema (88%) and pain (92%) as the main local manifestations, and nausea (36%) and vomiting (32%) as systemic manifestations. Cellulitis was the most common complication (24%). Student’s t-test showed a significant difference between complications and hospital stays lasting 3 to 7 days. The multinomial logistic regression explained 75% of the severity variability and showed that prior non-medical practices increased the risk of severe cases. Conclusions: Snakebite envenomation in children remains an important public health problem. The statistical model showed that non-medical practices are associated with a higher degree of severity. To address limitations such as cleaning difficulties or secondary contamination/damage of cultural relics caused by the uncontrollable diffusion of water/cleaning agent/dirty liquids during the cleaning process in traditional cleaning methods, this study, using cotton textiles as an example, systematically investigated the cleaning efficacy of four in situ methods (blank gel, cleaning gel, ultrasonic emulsification, and gel + ultrasonic emulsification synergistic cleaning) on eight types of stains, including sand, clay, rust, blood, ink, oil, and mixed solid/liquid stains. Building upon this, this study proposed an efficient, targeted, in situ, and controllable cleaning strategy tailored for fragile, stained textile relics. Results demonstrated that, regardless of the stain type, the synergistic cleaning method of G+U (gel poultice + ultrasonic emulsification) consistently outperformed the cleaning methods of blank gel poultice, cleaning gel poultice, and ultrasonic emulsification. Furthermore, the gel loaded with cleaning agents was always more effective than the blank gel (unloaded cleaning agents). The poultice methods of blank gel and cleaning gel were better suited for solid stains, while the ultrasonic emulsification cleaning method was more effective for liquid stains. Meanwhile, it was also found that the optimal cleaning method proposed in this study (the G+U synergistic cleaning method) was a cleaning method that restricted the cleaning agent within the gel network/emulsion system, and utilized the porous network physical structure of gel, the chemical action of emulsion’s wetting/dissolving dirt, and the cavitation synergistic effect of ultrasound to achieve the targeted removal of contaminants from relics’ surfaces. Crucially, the cleaning process of G+U also had the characteristics of controlling the cleaning area at the designated position and effectively regulating the diffusion rate of the cleaning solution within the treatment zone, as well as the reaction intensity. Therefore, the proposed optimal (the synergistic cleaning method of G+U) cleaning method conforms to the significant implementation of the “minimal intervention and maximal preservation” principle in modern cultural heritage conservation. Consequently, the synergistic cleaning method of G+U holds promise for practical application in artifact cleaning work. Full article

(1) Background: Clays are popular raw materials of natural origin used in cosmetology, beauty salons, and home care. They have moisturizing, soothing, cleansing, disinfecting, detoxifying, and regenerating properties, and can be used externally in the form of poultices or internally in solution form. Though they are characterized by a rich and diverse mineral composition and are considered safe for the body, their use can expose users to harmful elements including mercury. (2) Materials and methods: This study analyzed mercury (Hg) concentrations in samples of cosmetic clays available on the Polish market. Hg analysis was performed using the AAS method with an AMA 254 analyzer. The clays differed in type/color and were purchased from different manufacturers. (3) Results: The mean Hg content in all the tested samples was 28.91 µg/kg, with a range of changes of 1.87–200.81 µg/kg. The highest concentrations of Hg were found in green (AM = 53.26 µg/kg) and white (AM = 52.80 µg/kg) clays, while the lowest were detected in purple (AM = 2.56 µg/kg) and blue (AM = 3.69 µg/kg) clays. The differences in Hg content between individual types of clay were statistically significant. (4) Conclusions: Due to the presence of Hg found in all the samples of cosmetic clay tested, it is likely that these products need to be tested for their metal contents. Full article

Microbial contamination of chronic wounds complicates their treatment. Traditional knowledge systems and the diversity of indigenous medicinal plants create a haven for traditional medicine practices in South Africa (SA). This systematic review aims to present a comprehensive ethnobotanical report of traditional medicines used in the documented empirical wound healing studies in SA. Google Scholar, PubMed, Medline EBSCOhost, Science Direct, and Scopus were sourced using the keywords/terminologies “South Africa”, “medicinal plants”, “traditional medicine” “indigenous”, “skin”, “wound”, “ethnobotany”, “survey”, “interview”, and “treatment” in different combinations. Relevant and unpublished records were retrieved from the Global Electronic Thesis Database. The searching process identified 32,419 records, of which 4005 studies were screened. Following the removal of 1795 duplicates, the remaining 2210 sources were screened by title and abstract, and 133 full-text reports were accessed and evaluated. Plants traditionally used for wound-healing purposes comprised 222 species belonging to 71 families, namely Asteraceae (predominantly the Helichrysum species), Asphodelaceae, Fabaceae, Solanaceae, and Euphorbiaceae. Plant organs used for medicinal remedies included leaves, roots, and bark prepared as poultices, infusions, decoctions, gel/ointments/lotions, and pastes. This review provides a valuable reference for future phytochemical and pharmacological studies and highlights the need for further ethnobotanical research to treat wounds in SA. Full article

For thousands of years, Vachellia nilotica has been widely used as an herbal medicine to treat some diseases and symptoms, including respiratory, gastrointestinal and urogenital ailments. The present study was adapted to document and assemble existing information about V. nilotica and its evidence-based ethnopharmacological activities, with brief reviews on the description, geographical distribution, ecology, medical uses and phytochemistry. A literature review and information up to 2024 was performed in various scientific databases, including PubMed, Science Direct and Google Scholar. The keywords were “Acacia nilotica”, “Botany”, “ecology”, “Traditional uses”, “Phytochemistry”, “Polyphenols”, “Molecular docking”, “Ethnopharmacological activities” and “toxicity”, among others. V. nilotica has a wide range of uses, with low toxicity, reported in different countries. It can be infused into oils or tea or incorporated into paste, poultice and biscuits, used as an emollient, antidiarrheal, astringent and as an antidote for bite poisons. Glucose and lipid-lowering, anti-inflammatory, analgesic, antipyretic, antioxidant, antihypertensive, antibacterial, antifungal, antiviral and anthelmintic activities are the most prominent. Over 150 chemical components have been identified from V. nilotica that could be associated with its potential actions. Quercetin, rutin, kaempferol, naringenin, catechin, epicatechin, gallic acid, ellagic acid, lupeol and niloticane are its main active constituents. From the research data, and despite the fact that human clinical trials and detailed methodological studies are scarce, V. nilotica has shown wide-ranging activities, though the most robust evidence is related to the treatment of microbial infections, diarrhea, wound and ulcer healing and for topical application. More pharmacological and toxicological studies are required to further elucidate the mechanisms of action, potential side effects, and optimal dosages for these treatments. Additionally, more clinical trials are needed to validate these traditional uses in human populations and to ensure the safety and efficacy of V. nilotica for these applications. This article offers an overview of therapeutic applications by utilizing traditional uses and recent findings on phytochemical studies, and clinical and pharmacological research. Full article

Background: Oral traditional knowledge disseminates the use of young leaves of Vernonanthura tweediana (Asteraceae) as poultice in feverish cases among family farmers in Santa Catarina, Brazil, but there is a lack of phytochemistry and pharmacological studies on this species, especially those related to volatile organic compounds. Methods: In the present study, the dry leaves of V. tweediana were subjected to hydrodistillation for the extraction of essential oil. Sample characterization was conducted using GC-FID and GC-MS. To evaluate anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory activities, the air pouch method was used, and with the exudate obtained, total and differential leukocyte counts were performed, as well as the quantification of total proteins, interleukin (IL) 1β, IL-6, and tumor necrosis factor (TNF). Results: The essential oil yield extraction was 0.13%, and sesquiterpenes were the main constituents: α-copaene (5.1%), β-caryophyllene (27.77%), α-caryophyllene (15.1%), germacrene D (14.0%), and bicyclogermacrene (13.3%). A sample was subjected to biological tests, with a reduction in leukocyte migration to the inflammatory focus. The immunomodulatory activity was also pronounced, as the oil modulated all cytokine secretions measured when compared to the control. The high concentration of caryophyllenes might explain these findings. Conclusions: Future studies will consider the fractionation of the essential oil to establish the degree of synergism between the constituents. Full article

To document the dynamics of biocultural heritage, we studied traditional uses of plants on a segment of the Andean Road System, or Qhapaq Ñan, within the central Andes of Ecuador, home of the Kichwa community of Nizag. Here, residents preserved a rich diversity of plants within their agricultural fields, or chakra, of the Andean landscapes, upholding a culture steeped in traditional knowledge. Wild and domesticated plants are a cornerstone for the community, prompting the development of ethnobotanical management strategies with a conservation approach. The diverse plant uses aim to revalue their culture, fortify their self-identification as an indigenous community, and ensure the transmission of ancestral knowledge. This research aims to ascertain the ethnobotanical applications of this venerable community. Employing participatory action research, semistructured interviews were conducted with 43 community informants to gather ethnobotanical data on the flora applied within their territory, spanning categories such as food, agriculture, crafts, living fences, construction, fuel, ornamental, environmental, technological, and medicinal services. The findings indicate that age, rather than educational level and gender, significantly influences the variation in plant usage knowledge. In total, 142 plant species were cataloged, comprising herbs (58%), shrubs (23%), trees (15%), and climbers (4%). The most represented families were Asteraceae, Fabaceae, Lamiaceae, and Poaceae. Notably, 96% of these species provide some type of environmental service or fulfill a niche within the socioecological system. Medicinal uses were reported for 89% of the plants, while 56% served agricultural purposes, primarily in fertilizer production and forage. Additionally, 44% of the plants are utilized as food, typically consumed fresh. Among the medicinal plants, leaves are the most used part (58%), prepared as infusions and poultices. The prevalent ailments addressed include respiratory and urinary system conditions, with Borago officinalis, Carica pentagona, Vasconcellea pubescens, and Origanum mejorana being the most frequently employed plants. 2 Kings 20:1–11; Isaiah 38:1–22 and 2 Chronicles 32:24–26 discuss Hezekiah’s sickness and the power of healing prayer. They are called Hezekiah-Isaiah narratives since they deal not only with (a) the threats and salvation of Jerusalem from Assyria, (b) the disease and the miraculous recovery or healing (ḥāyâ/rāքā’) of Hezekiah and description of the representatives from Babylon, but share a common narrative pattern in which Hezekiah is healed with a poultice/lump of fig tree (dəbelet təʾnim), having received advise and healing support from God’s messenger, Isaiah. Past scholars have approached this text differently, searching for its dating, literary growths, differences, originality with the desire to reveal the history of the various traditional components and relationship among parallel texts, as well the prophetic and kingly images of Isaiah and Hezekiah. Built on this past scholarship and African cultural perspectives and experiences, this work contextually, historically and theologically study, develop and analyze the story of Hezekiah’s sickness and healing. The peculiar physicochemical features of deep eutectic solvents (DESs), in particular their tunability, make them ideal media for various applications. Despite their ability to solubilize metal oxides, their use as rust removers from valuable substrates has not yet been thoroughly investigated. In this study, we chose three known DESs, consisting of choline chloride and acetic, oxalic or citric acid for evaluating their ability to remove corrosion products from a cellulose-based material as linen fabric and two different lithotypes, as travertine and granite. The artificial staining was achieved by placing a rusty iron grid on their surfaces. The DESs were applied by means of cellulose poultice on the linen fabrics, while on the rusted stone surfaces with a cotton swab. Macro- and microscopic observations, colorimetry and SEM/EDS analysis were employed to ascertain the cleaning effectiveness and the absence of side effects on the samples after treatment. Oxalic acid-based DES was capable of removing rust stains from both stone and cellulose-based samples, while choline chloride/citric acid DES was effective only on stone specimens. The results suggest a new practical application of DESs for the elimination of rust from lithic and cellulosic substrates of precious and artistic value. Full article

Soluble salts and clays are major intrinsic causes of degradation of porous cultural heritage materials. Identifying their presence and concentrations can allow environmental control to prevent decay before it is observed. Such control is often energy- and carbon-intensive and better targeted towards those objects that require it rather than a general approach. The use of poultices has been investigated to determine salt species and concentrations in stone to replace drilling samples. A non-invasive method using two types of moisture meter has been developed to map the conductivity of salt solutions in stone. Fourier transform and near-infrared spectroscopies have been investigated to non-invasively quantify the amount of muscovite clay in limestones without the need to take drilled samples. Salts can react with extrinsic acetic acid from display and storage environments, causing extensive damaging surface efflorescences. A rapid analytical procedure based on external reflectance Fourier transform infra-red (FTIR) microscopy has been developed. This allows analysis of multiple salts on a cuneiform tablet surface. Analyses of soluble salts inside the tablets has indicated the sulphate-to-chloride ratio is a good predictor of whether mixed acetate efflorescences will occur on exposure. Full article

Meeting food and nutritional security needs for a growing population is a global sustainability challenge due to the heavy reliance on a few cultivated crops for dietary requirements across the world. To ensure local food security, it is imperative to diversify dietary options with locally available, neglected, and underutilized crops (NUCs) with nutritional and biocultural significance. In this context, the present study aims to explore the role of NUCs for nutritional, ethnomedicinal, and agricultural relevance in two districts of eastern Uttar Pradesh, i.e., Mirzapur and Sonebhadra. Extensive field surveys were conducted in the study sites, and a total of 445 local respondents were interviewed based on structured questionnaires for calculating ethnobotanical indices, i.e., relative frequency of citation (RFC), frequency of citation (FC), use report (UR), and cultural importance index (CI) of NUCs. The study identified 116 NUCs belonging to 55 families and 103 genera. All reported NUCs had medicinal value; 55 were edible and used as food; and 41 had agricultural significance. Leaves were the most commonly used plant parts for medicinal purposes, followed by roots and stems, whereas flowers were the least commonly used parts. NUCs were used by the locals for their medicinal properties to treat various ailments, such as skin and eye problems, headaches, and liver problems. They were administered as decoction, paste, vapor inhalation, fruit juice, and poultice. The RFC, FC, UR, and CI values of the NUCs were in the range of 12 to 365, 0.03 to 0.82, 12 to 394, and 0.03 to 0.89, respectively. Fruits were the most commonly consumed part, followed by leaves, tubers, pods, and aerial bulbs, whereas the mode of consumption was stir-fry, soup, vegetables, salad, or in raw form. NUCs were bestowed with essential macro- and micronutrients and were found in the range of Ca (3.79–1147.3), K (2.6–1600.3), Mg (0.8–468.0), Na (0.4–270.8), P (1.15–305), Fe (0.1–327.6), Zn (0.1–84.6), Cu (0.047–33.3), Mn (0.1–62.3) mg/100 g, and vitamins like ascorbic acid (0.04–1561.1), thiamine (0.041–2.4), and β-Carotene (0.2–93.6) mg/100 g. These NUCs were cultivated in different settings, such as kitchen gardens, backyard gardens, border crops, and sometimes agricultural fields. The current study reveals the rich diversity and varied use of these NUCs with respect to their ethnomedicinal, nutritional, and agricultural relevance. Sustainable utilization with large-scale cultivation of promising NUCs can lead to local food security and the subsequent attainment of the associated UN Sustainable Development Goals. Full article

Dermatological ailments are a major health problem, especially when related to human immune deficiency syndrome and acquired immune deficiency. The goal of this study was to identify the medicinal plants used by the indigenous peoples of the Northwestern Himalayas to treat dermatological diseases. Several field trips were conducted in the spring and summer seasons of 2020–2021 to collect the plants of dermatological value and information about their use through open-ended semi-structured interviews (n = 53) and group discussions (n = 33). The current investigation found 64 ethnomedicinal plants belonging to 34 families commonly used to treat a variety of dermatological ailments. The main growth form was herbs (80%), followed by trees (8%) and ferns (6%). It was found that leaves (51%) were the most commonly used plant part, followed by roots and the whole plant. Wound healing was the most dominant application, with 18 plant species used, followed by skin burns cured by 11 plant species and skin boils by eight plant species. Out of the total (18%) of medicinal plants with cosmetic uses, i.e., roots of Jurinea dolomiaea, Rheum webbianum, and Rheum spiciforme were crushed into powder and mixed with turmeric, and the paste is applied topically for glowing skin. Among the various preparation methods, paste (38%) was the most common way of preparation, followed by poultice (29%) and infusion (9%). Between ethnic groups, the maximum homogeneity was between Gujjar and Bakarwal ethnic groups (23 species, 36%), followed by Gujjars and Kashmiri (14 species, 22%). Bakarwals and Gujjar people live in the same geographical location, and they graze their animals in pastures, practice extensive transhumance pastoralism, and pass through different ecological landscapes, thus having sufficient experiences with certain plants and retaining more knowledge. The species identified with the highest utilization based on the number of citations and use value included Ficus carica, Cichorium intybus, Euphorbia wallichii, Pinus wallichiana, Plantago major, Jurinea dolomiaea, and Artemisia absinthium. The findings of this study demonstrate that people who reside in the Northwestern Himalayas region still rely on medicinal plants. Full article
