Anomalies of coronary artery origins are rare but significant conditions that can range from benign to life-threatening. Early detection through imaging is crucial in preventing adverse outcomes. The treatment strategy varies depending on the type and severity of the anomaly, ranging from pharmacological treatment to surgery. A 22-year-old male patient, after syncope, after excluding other causes, had an exercise drill test, which was clinically negative and ECG-positive. Angio-CT revealed an undeveloped left main coronary artery (LMCA), and the circulation was supplied through the right coronary artery (RCA). The RCA provides the left anterior descending artery (LAD), and the LAD retrogradely supplies the left circumflex artery (LCX). The myocardial perfusion scintigraphy showed a slight lack of perfusion in the anterior wall (6% of total perfusion). The patient was qualified for further observation. A 77-year-old female underwent cardiac CT due to stenocardia. CT showed a lack of LMCA. The initial segment of the RCA gave rise to the left coronary artery (LCA), which encircled the aortic bulb posteriorly and bifurcated into branches resembling the LCX and LAD. After the Heart Team consultation, the patient was deemed eligible for conservative treatment. Angio-CT is a valuable tool for detecting coronary artery anomalies. Full article

(1) Background: This article aims to understand the forms and elements through which the inhabitants of the city of Medellin have configured their subjectivity in the context of the application of neoliberal policies in the last two decades. In this way, we can approach the frameworks of understanding that constitute a fundamental part of the individuation processes in which the incorporation of their subjectivities is evidenced in neoliberal contexts that, in the historical process, have been converging with authoritarian, antidemocratic and neoconservative elements. (2) Method: A qualitative approach with a hermeneutic-interpretative paradigm was used. In-depth semi-structured interviews were conducted with 41 inhabitants of Medellín who were politically identified with right-wing or center-right positions. Data analysis included thematic coding to identify patterns of thought and points of view. (3) Results: Participants associate success with individual effort and see state intervention as an obstacle to development. They reject redistributive policies, arguing that they generate dependency. In addition, they justify authoritarian models of government in the name of security and progress, from a moral superiority, which is related to a negative and stigmatizing perception of progressive sectors and a negative view of the social rule of law and public policies with social sense. (4) Conclusions: The naturalization of merit as a guiding principle, the perception of themselves as morally superior based on religious values that grant a subjective place of certainty and goodness; the criminalization of expressions of political leftism, mobilizations and redistributive reforms and support for policies that establish authoritarianism and perpetuate exclusion and structural inequalities, closes roads to a participatory democracy that enables social and economic transformations. Background and Objectives: Risk stratification in acute heart failure (AHF) remains challenging, particularly in settings where biomarker availability is limited. Echocardiography offers valuable hemodynamic insights, but no single parameter fully captures the complexity of biventricular dysfunction and pressure overload. This study aimed to evaluate a novel echocardiographic index (ViRTUE IndexVTI-RVRA-TAPSE Unified Evaluation) integrating a peak systolic gradient between the right ventricle and right atrium (RV-RA gradient), tricuspid annular plane systolic excursion (TAPSE), the velocity–time integral in the left ventricular outflow tract (VTI LVOT), NT-proBNP (N-terminal pro–B-type Natriuretic Peptide) levels, and in-hospital mortality among patients with AHF. Materials and Methods: We retrospectively analyzed 123 patients admitted with AHF. Echocardiographic evaluation at admission included TAPSE, VTI LVOT, and the RV-RA gradient. An index was calculated as RVRA gradient TAPSE x VTI LVOT. NT-proBNP levels and in-hospital outcomes were recorded. Statistical analysis included correlation, logistic regression, and ROC curve evaluation. Results: The proposed index showed a significant positive correlation with NT-proBNP values (r = 0.543, p < 0.0001) and good discriminative ability for elevated NT-proBNP (AUC = 0.79). It also correlated with in-hospital mortality (r = 0.193, p = 0.032) and showed moderate prognostic performance (AUC = 0.68). Higher index values were associated with greater mortality risk. Conclusions: This novel index, based on standard echocardiographic measurements, reflects both systolic dysfunction and pressure overload in AHF. Its correlation with NT-proBNP and in-hospital mortality highlights its potential as a practical, accessible bedside tool for early risk stratification, particularly when biomarker testing is unavailable or delayed. This paper introduces a robust and efficient Localized Spline-based Path-Planning (LSPP) algorithm designed to enhance autonomous vehicle navigation on highways. The LSPP approach prioritizes smooth maneuvering, obstacle avoidance, passenger comfort, and adherence to road constraints, including lane boundaries, through optimized trajectory generation using quintic spline functions and a dynamic speed profile. Leveraging real-time data from the vehicle’s sensor fusion module, the LSPP algorithm accurately interprets the positions of surrounding vehicles and obstacles, creating a safe, dynamically feasible path that is relayed to the Model Predictive Control (MPC) track-following module for precise execution. The theoretical distinction of LSPP lies in its modular integration of: (1) a finite state machine (FSM)-based decision-making layer that selects maneuver-specific goal states (e.g., keep lane, change lane left/right); (2) quintic spline optimization to generate smooth, jerk-minimized, and kinematically consistent trajectories; (3) a multi-objective cost evaluation framework that ranks competing paths according to safety, comfort, and efficiency; and (4) a closed-loop MPC controller to ensure real-time trajectory execution with robustness. Extensive simulations conducted in diverse highway scenarios and traffic conditions demonstrate LSPP’s effectiveness in delivering smooth, safe, and computationally efficient trajectories. Results show consistent improvements in lane-keeping accuracy, collision avoidance, enhanced materials wear performance, and planning responsiveness compared to traditional path-planning methods. These findings confirm LSPP’s potential as a practical and high-performance solution for autonomous highway driving. Full article

Objective: This study aims to examine the anterior chamber structure and related factors in 8-year-old children based on data from The Yamanashi Adjunct Study of the Japan Environment and Children’s Study (JECS). Methods: A total of 709 children aged 8 years (350 boys and 359 girls) who participated in the JECS Adjunct Study were included. The right eyes were primarily used for measurements. Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) was utilized to scan the anterior chambers of the participants’ eyes. The following parameters were measured: Angle Opening Distance (AOD500, 750), Trabecular Iris Space Area (TISA500, 750), Anterior Chamber Angle (ACA500, 750), Peripheral Iris Thickness (IT500, 750), and Peripheral Corneal Thickness (PCT500, 750). The relationships between anterior chamber structure, axial length (AL), spherical equivalent (SE), logMAR (without correction), and body height were analyzed. Results: A significant negative correlation was found between SE and ACA (500: coefficient = −0.19; 750: −0.24), AOD (500: −0.19; 750: −0.24), and TISA (500: −0.17; 750: −0.23) (p < 0.001). Conversely, a significant positive correlation was observed between AL and ACA (500: 0.22; 750: 0.26), AOD (500: 0.25; 750: 0.30), and TISA (500: 0.24; 750: 0.29) (p < 0.001). Boys exhibited a longer AL (boys: girls = 23.30 ± 0.76 mm; girls = 22.79 ± 0.72 mm) and greater CT (500: boys = 812.82 ± 51.94 mm; girls = 784.48 ± 51.81 mm; 750: boys = 776.01 ± 48.64 mm; girls = 751.34 ± 49.63 mm) compared to girls (p < 0.001) despite no significant difference in body height. CT and IT showed no correlation with AL or SE, and visual acuity had minimal correlation with IT and CT. Conclusions: In our cohort of eight-year-old children, the anterior chamber angle structure correlates with ocular structures and refractive error, revealing notable differences between boys and girls. Background/Objectives: Malnutrition is an imbalance of nutrients required for growth, development, and organ function. Its impact on bone development is known, but its effects on cartilage remain unclear. This study aimed to evaluate the femoral cartilage thickness in children with primary malnutrition. Methods: In this cross-sectional observational study, 83 children with primary malnutrition and 62 age- and sex-matched healthy controls were included. Patients with primary malnutrition were classified as mild, moderate and severe. Femoral cartilage thickness measurements of all children were taken by ultrasound from the femoral lateral condyle, femoral medial condyle and intercondylar area for both knees with the patient in a supine position with the knees flexed 90 degrees. Results: The right lateral, right medial, left lateral, and left medial femoral cartilages were significantly thicker in patients with malnutrition compared to those without malnutrition (p = 0.002, 0.004, <0.001, and 0.001, respectively). A significant negative correlation was found between age, weight Z-score, and height Z-score and triceps skinfold thickness. Conclusions: Distal femoral cartilage thickness is significantly greater in children with primary malnutrition. This demonstrates the effect of nutritional factors on cartilage tissue and suggests that children with chronic malnutrition are at risk for both knee joint problems and short stature later in life. Background: Comorbid personality disorders (PDs) in patients with anorexia nervosa (AN) are associated with increased psychopathology, higher suicide risk, and poorer treatment response and outcomes. This study aimed to examine associations between gray matter (GM) volume and PDs in female adolescents with AN before and after short-term psychotherapeutic and nutritional therapy. Methods: Eighteen female adolescents with acute AN, mean age 15.9 years, underwent 3T magnetic resonance imaging before and after weight restoration. The average interval between scans was 2.6 months. Structural brain changes were analyzed using voxel-based morphometry. PDs were assessed using the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV Axis II Disorders (SCID II) and the Assessment of Identity Development Questionnaire. Results: SCID-II total scores showed significant positive associations with GM volume in the mid-cingulate cortex at both time points and in the left superior parietal–occipital lobule at baseline. The histrionic subscale correlated with GM volume in the thalamus bilaterally and the left superior parietal–occipital lobule in both assessments, as well as with the mid-cingulate cortex at follow-up. Borderline and antisocial subscales were associated with GM volume in the thalamus bilaterally at baseline and in the right mid-cingulate cortex at follow-up. Conclusions: PDs in female adolescent patients with AN may be specifically related to GM alterations in the thalamus, cingulate, and parieto-occipital regions, which are present during acute illness and persist after weight restoration therapy. Background and clinical significance: Trichoblastomas are rare, mixed epithelial tumors with a mesenchymal component and hair follicle differentiation. Case presentation: Herein, we present a case report of a 51-year-old female patient presenting to the obstetrics and gynecology department with complaints of edema and erythema of the right Bartholin gland, and a lesion measuring 2 cm on the right lateral edge of the mons pubis, towards the inguinal fold. Marsupialization of the Bartholin gland was performed, as well as an incision into the pubo-inguinal lesion, which the patient depicted as grossly resembling an ingrown hair. Upon incision into the pubic–inguinal lesion, it was dark brown in color and spontaneously popped out of the subcutis, without an attempt at enucleation. Histology and subsequent immunohistochemistry of the lesion showed a blue basaloid tumor with an extensive pigment component located deep in the dermis that was sharply demarcated from the surrounding tissues. Conclusion: Immunohistochemistry was diffusely and strongly positive for epithelial markers; melanocytic markers were positive only in dendritic melanocytes dispersed within the tumors, and the proliferative index was low. As such, the tumor was identified as melanotrichoblastoma. Full article

Knowing the superior biochemical defense mechanisms of sessile organisms, it is not hard to believe the cure for any human sickness might be hidden in nature—we “just” have to identify it and make it safely available in the right dose to our organs and cells that are in need. For decades, green tea catechins (GTCs) have been a case in point. Because of their low redox potential and favorable positioning of hydroxyl groups, these flavonoid representatives (namely, catechin—C, epicatechin—EC, epicatechin gallate—ECG, epigallocatechin—EGC, epigallocatechin gallate—EGCG) are among the most potent plant-derived (and not only) antioxidants. The proven anti-inflammatory, neuroprotective, antimicrobial, and anticarcinogenic properties of these phytochemicals further contribute to their favorable pharmacological profile. Doubtlessly, GTCs hold the potential to “cope” with the majority of today‘s socially significant diseases, yet their mass use in clinical practice is still limited. Several factors related to the compounds’ membrane penetrability, chemical stability, and solubility overall determine their low bioavailability. Moreover, the antioxidant-to-pro-oxidant transitioning behavior of GTCs is highly conditional and, to a certain degree, unpredictable. The nanoparticulate delivery systems represent a logical approach to overcoming one or more of these therapeutic challenges. This review particularly focuses on the lipid-based nanotechnologies known to be a leading choice when it comes to drug permeation enhancement and not drug release modification nor drug stabilization solely. It is our goal to present the privileges of encapsulating green tea catechins in either vesicular or particulate lipid carriers with respect to the increasingly popular trends of advanced phytotherapy and functional nutrition. Right Ventricular Structure and Function in Patients with Primary Aldosteronism: A Cardiac Magnetic Resonance Study

Background/Objectives: While aldosterone excess has a detrimental impact on the left ventricle, no data exist concerning right ventricular (RV) function in primary aldosteronism (PA) patients. We aimed to assess RV structure and function in patients with PA using cardiac magnetic resonance imaging. Methods: Thirty PA patients and 30 age- and sex-matched healthy volunteers were studied. All patients underwent cardiac magnetic resonance with the assessment of RV structure and function. Results: Neither the RV mass index (RVMi) nor the RV ejection fraction (RVEF) correlated with the aldosterone levels (p = 0.36 and p = 0.37, respectively). On the contrary, we found a weak positive correlation between the RV end-diastolic volume index (RVEDVi) and aldosterone concentration (rho = 0.5, p = 0.005). Neither the RVEDVi nor the RVEF differed between the PA patients and the control group (p = 0.077 and p = 0.93, respectively). The RVMi was higher in the PA group, at 18.9 (4.9) g/m2, versus 13.6 (3.2) g/m2 (SD) in the control group (p < 0.0001). The RVEDVi was positively correlated with the duration of hypertension (rho = 0.4, p = 0.03), and the latter was correlated inversely with the RVEF (rho = −0.47, p = 0.009). The RV global longitudinal strain was impaired in PA patients in comparison with the controls (−16.8 (2.5%) versus −19.6 (2.7%), p = 0.0001). Conclusions: The PA patients exhibited larger RVMi values than the controls. The higher the aldosterone levels were, the higher the observed RVEDVi. Additionally, the longer the duration of hypertension, the higher the observed RVEDVi and the lower the noted RVEF. The PA patients exhibited subclinical RV systolic dysfunction, expressed as impaired RV global longitudinal strain. Full article

This study investigated whether pet ownership—particularly attachment to a companion animal during childhood—is associated with differences in moral concerns toward all animals in adulthood. It also aimed to explore the potential effects of empathy and speciesism on overall moral concerns toward animals. Using self-report questionnaires among 72 participants recruited online, the analyses revealed a significant effect of animal categories on moral concerns, F(1, 1.98) = 59.37, p < 0.001. Mean moral concern scores were significantly higher for companion animals (M = 6.04, SD = 1.15) than for food animals (M = 4.90, SD = 1.44), unappealing wild animals (M = 4.20, SD = 1.87), and appealing wild animals (M = 5.73, SD = 1.32), p < 0.05. Additionally, childhood pet owners reported greater moral concerns for all animals, F(1, 1.98) = 4.87, η2 = 0.065, p < 0.05. Attachment to a companion animal in childhood was positively correlated with moral concerns for all animal categories. Finally, although attachment and empathy were both positively related to moral concern, only attachment was a significant predictor (p < 0.05). Further research is needed to understand the psychological mechanisms influencing views on animal rights and welfare. Full article

Background: This study examines balance, flexibility and self-esteem among healthy individuals who engage in surfing compared to those who do not surf. Methods: A cross-sectional study design was conducted with 124 participants divided into the following groups: Group 1: Surfers n = 42; Group 2: individuals performing over 3 h of physical activity per week n = 43; and Group 3: individuals performing fewer than 3 h of physical activity per week n = 39. To assess balance, the Star Excursion Balance Test (SEBT) and the Flamenco Test (FBT) were used, the sit-and-reach test (SRT) was used to measure hamstring extensibility, the Rosenberg Scale was used to measure self-esteem, and the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ) was used to measure physical activity levels. Results: Regarding descriptive characteristics, G1 participants were significant older than those of G2 and G3 (p < 0.05 and p < 0.001, respectively). Moreover, there was a higher proportion of females in G3 than in G1 and G2 (p < 0.05). The results revealed significant differences in balance between the surfers and those engaging in fewer than 3 h of activity per week (p < 0.05). G1 obtained significantly higher results in SEBT-left leg than G2 and G3 (p < 0.001) and higher result in SEBT-right leg and FBT than G3 (p < 0.05) but no significant differences in self-esteem were found. Significant differences in flexibility were observed between males and females (p < 0.001). Conclusions: This result suggests that surfing could have a positive effect on balance. Full article

Lacrimal cysts (dacryops), which involve lacrimal tissue, are uncommon in dogs with an obscure/unclear pathogenesis. Compared to the current available literature, this report describes the clinicopathologic and immunohistochemical features of two cases of unusual dacryops in brachycephalic dogs. A three-year-old male Cane Corso was referred with a 1-month history of swelling ventromedial to the left eye associated with blepharospasm and epiphora. Furthermore, a severe lower and upper eyelid entropion and a deep corneal ulcer were present. B-mode ultrasonography and a CT scan revealed a subcutaneous cyst, closely adherent to the maxillary bone. Surgical removal and the correction of entropion were performed. No recurrence and/or complication was detected by seven-year follow-up. Histopathology revealed a cystic structure with single- to double-cell-layered, nonciliated, cuboidal epithelia. Alcian blue stain revealed rare, disseminated goblet cells admixed with epithelial cells. The epithelium was strongly Cytokeratin-positive by immunohistochemistry and appeared lined by several layers of smooth muscle actin (SMA)-positive myoepithelial cells. A 1-year-old male French Bulldog with a 3-month lesion of the third eyelid of the right eye. The lesion (15 mm × 7 mm) beneath the conjunctiva appeared pale-pink, smooth, and multilobulated. Excision was performed by blunt dissection through the conjunctiva on the palpebral surface of the third eyelid. Recovery was uncomplicated, and no recurrence has been noted at three-year follow-up. Cytology of the cystic fluid and histopathology and immunohistochemistry of the cyst wall revealed findings for case 1. To further characterize the SMA-positive spindle cells located directly beneath the cyst-lining epithelium, double-color immunofluorescence for SMA and p63 (a myoepithelial cell marker) was performed on the sample from case 2. The analysis revealed that the SMA-positive cells lacked p63 expression, indicating a non-myoepithelial phenotype. The histological findings in our cases are consistent with previous reports of canine dacryops. The positivity of immunohistochemical staining for SMA in cells directly beneath the epithelium of dacryops in the cases here described in two brachycephalic dogs is consistent with previous reports in dogs and horses but in contrast with a retrospective study about a human dacryops. These results support the conclusion that the pathogenesis of dacryops in dogs should exclude failure of ductular “neuromuscular” contractility. Full article

An EF1 tornado struck Nansha District, Guangzhou, Guangdong, on 28 July 2024. To explore the dynamic and thermodynamic changes during the tornado’s life cycle, high-resolution spatiotemporal data from Foshan’s X-band phased-array radar and the direct wind field synthesis algorithm were used to reconstruct the 3D wind field. The dynamics and 3D structure of the tornado were analysed, with a new parameter, vorticity volume (VV), introduced to study its variation. The observation results indicate that the tornado moved roughly from south to north. During the tornado’s early stage (00:10–00:20 UTC), arc-shaped and annular echoes emerged and positive vorticity increased (peaking at 0.042 s−1). Based on the tornado’s movement direction, the right side of the vortex centre was divergent, while the left side was convergent, whereas the vorticity area and volume continued to grow centrally. During the mature stage (00:23–00:25 UTC), the echo intensity weakened and, at 00:24, the vorticity reached its peak and touched the ground, with the vorticity area and volume also reaching their peaks at the same time. During the dissipation stage (00:25–00:30 UTC), the vorticity and echo features faded and the vorticity area and volume also declined rapidly. The analysis showed that the vorticity volume effectively reflects the tornado’s life cycle, enhancing the understanding of the dynamic and thermodynamic processes during the tornado’s development. Climate Risks and Common Prosperity for Corporate Employees: The Role of Environment Governance in Promoting Social Equity in China

Promoting social equity is a global issue, and common prosperity is an important goal for human society’s sustainable development. This study is the first to examine climate risks’ impacts on common prosperity from the perspective of corporate employees, providing micro-level evidence for the coordinated development of climate governance and social equity. Employing data from companies listed on the Shanghai and Shenzhen stock exchanges from 2016 to 2023, a fixed-effects model analysis was conducted, and the results showed the following: (1) Climate risks are positively associated with the common prosperity of corporate employees in a significant way, and this effect is mainly achieved through employee guarantees, rather than employee remuneration or employment. (2) Climate risk will increase corporate financing constraints, but it will also force companies to improve their ESG performance. (3) The mechanism tests show that climate risks indirectly promote improvements in employee rights and interests by forcing companies to improve the quality of internal controls and audits. (4) The results of the moderating effect analysis show that corporate size and performance have a positive moderating effect on the relationship between climate risk and the common prosperity of corporate employees. This finding may indicate the transmission path of “climate pressure—governance upgrade—social equity” and suggest that climate governance may be transformed into social value through institutional changes in enterprises. This study breaks through the limitations of traditional research on the financial perspective of the economic consequences of climate risks, incorporates employee welfare into the climate governance assessment framework for the first time, expands the micro research dimension of common prosperity, provides a new paradigm for cross-research on ESG and social equity, and offers recommendations and references for different stakeholders.
