The placement of hydraulic elements in existing pool-type fishways to make them more suitable for Cyprinid fish is an issue of increasing interest in fishway research. Hydrodynamic characteristics and fish behavior at the representative pool of the fishway with bottom orifices and notches were assessed at the Dagdelen hydropower plant in the Ceyhan River Basin, Türkiye. Three-dimensional velocity measurements were taken in the pool of the fishway using an Acoustic Doppler velocimeter. The measurements were taken with and without a brush block at two different vertical distances from the bottom, which were below and above the level of bristles tips. A computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis was conducted for the studied fishway. The numerical model utilized Large Eddy Simulation (LES) combined with the Darcy–Forchheimer law, wherein brush blocks were represented as homogenous porous media. Our results revealed that the relative submergence of bristles in the brush block plays a very important role in velocity and Reynolds shear stress (RSS) distributions. After the placement of the submerged brush block, flow velocity and the lateral RSS component were reduced, and a resting area was created behind the brush block below the bristles’ tips. Fish movements in the pool were recorded by underwater cameras under real-time operation conditions. The heatmap analysis, which is a 2-dimensional fish spatial presence visualization technique for a specific time period, showed that Capoeta damascina avoided the areas with high turbulent fluctuations during the tests, and 61.5% of the fish presence intensity was found to be in the low Reynolds shear regions in the pool. This provides a clear case for the real-world ecological benefits of retrofitting existing pool-weir fishways with such flexible hydraulic elements. Full article

Soft data, such as seismic imagery, plays a critical role in subsurface modeling by providing indirect constraints away from hard data locations. However, validating whether subsurface model realizations honor this type of data remains a challenge due to the lack of robust quantitative tools. This study introduces a machine learning-based workflow for soft data checking that uses an autoencoder (AE) to encode 2D seismic slices into a latent space. Subsurface model realizations are transformed into the same domain and projected into this latent space, enabling both visual and quantitative comparisons using principal component analysis and Euclidean distances. We demonstrate the workflow on rule-based models and their associated synthetic seismic data (soft data), showing that models with similar Markov chain parameters to the reference soft data score higher in proximity metrics. This approach provides a scalable, quantitative, and interpretable framework for evaluating the consistency between soft data and subsurface models, supporting better decision-making in reservoir characterization and other geoscience applications. Background: Understanding the relationship between physical demands and game performance is essential to optimize player development and management in basketball. This study aimed to examine the association between game performance and physical demands in youth male basketball players. Methods: Fifteen players (16.3 ± 0.7 years) from a Spanish 4th division team were monitored over seven official games. Game performance variables were extracted from official statistics, including traditional and advanced metrics. Physical demands were monitored using an Electronic Performance Tracking System device, combining a positioning system and inertial sensors. Partial correlations, controlling for minutes played, were calculated to explore associations between physical demands and performance variables, both for the entire team and by playing position. Results: Significant correlations between physical demands and game performance were observed. Points scored correlated strongly with total distance and high-intensity accelerations, while assists correlated with high-intensity decelerations. Inertial metrics, such as player load and the number of jumps, showed large correlations with points, two-point attempts, and the efficiency rating. Positional analysis revealed stronger and more numerous correlations for centers compared to guards and forwards. Inertial sensor-derived metrics exhibited a greater number and strength of correlations than positioning metrics. Conclusions: Game performance and physical demands are intrinsically related, with specific patterns varying by playing position. Inertial sensors provide valuable complementary information to positioning systems for assessing physical demands in basketball. These findings can assist practitioners in tailoring monitoring and training strategies to optimize performance and manage player workload effectively. Full article

Accurate localization plays a critical role in enabling underwater vehicle autonomy. In this work, we develop a robust infrastructure-based localization framework that estimates the position and orientation of underwater vehicles using only range measurements from long baseline (LBL) acoustic beacons to multiple on-board receivers. The proposed framework integrates three key components, each formulated as a convex optimization problem. First, we introduce a robust calibration function that unifies multiple sources of measurement error—such as range-dependent degradation, variable sound speed, and latency—by modeling them through a monotonic function. This function bounds the true distance and defines a convex feasible set for each receiver location. Next, we estimate the receiver positions as the center of this feasible region, using two notions of centrality: the Chebyshev center and the maximum volume inscribed ellipsoid (MVE), both formulated as convex programs. Finally, we recover the vehicle’s full 6-DOF pose by enforcing rigid-body constraints on the estimated receiver positions. To do this, we leverage the known geometric configuration of the receivers in the vehicle and solve the Orthogonal Procrustes Problem to compute the rotation matrix that best aligns the estimated and known configurations, thereby correcting the position estimates and determining the vehicle orientation. We evaluate the proposed method through both numerical simulations and field experiments. To further enhance robustness under real-world conditions, we model beacon-location uncertainty—due to mooring slack and water currents—as bounded spherical regions around nominal beacon positions. We then mitigate the uncertainty by integrating the modified range constraints into the MVE position estimation formulation, ensuring reliable localization even under infrastructure drift. The development of Global Positioning System (GPS) technology has contributed in various ways to improving the physical condition of modern football players by enabling the quantification of physical load. Previous studies have reported that the running demands of matches vary depending on playing position and formation. Over the past decade, despite the widespread use of GPS technology, studies that have investigated the running performance of young football players within the 1-4-3-3 formation are particularly limited. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to create the match running profile of playing positions in the 1-4-3-3 formation among high-level youth football players. An additional objective of the study was to compare the running performance of players between the two halves of a match. This study involved 25 football players (Under-19, U19) from the academy of a professional football club. Data were collected from 18 league matches in which the team used the 1-4-3-3 formation. Positions were categorized as Central Defenders (CDs), Side Defenders (SDs), Central Midfielders (CMs), Side Midfielders (SMs), and Forwards (Fs). The players’ movement patterns were monitored using GPS devices and categorized into six speed zones: Zone 1 (0.1–6 km/h), Zone 2 (6.1–12 km/h), Zone 3 (12.1–18 km/h), Zone 4 (18.1–21 km/h), Zone 5 (21.1–24 km/h), and Zone 6 (above 24.1 km/h). The results showed that midfielders covered the greatest total distance (p = 0.001), while SDs covered the most meters at high and maximal speeds (Zones 5 and 6) (p = 0.001). In contrast, CDs covered the least distance at high speeds (p = 0.001), which is attributed to the specific tactical role of their position. A comparison of the two halves revealed a progressive decrease in the distance covered by the players at high speed: distance in Zone 3 decreased from 1139 m to 944 m (p = 0.001), Zone 4 from 251 m to 193 m (p = 0.001), Zone 5 from 144 m to 110 m (p = 0.001), and maximal sprinting (Zone 6) dropped from 104 m to 78 m (p = 0.01). Despite this reduction, the total distance remained relatively stable (first half: 5237 m; second half: 5046 m, p = 0.16), indicating a consistent overall workload but a reduced number of high-speed efforts in the latter stages. The results clearly show that the tactical role of each playing position in the 1-4-3-3 formation, as well as the area of the pitch in which each position operates, significantly affects the running performance profile. This information should be utilized by fitness coaches to tailor physical loads based on playing position. More specifically, players who cover greater distances at high speeds during matches should be prepared for this scenario within the microcycle by performing similar distances during training. It can also be used for better preparing younger players (U17) before transitioning to the U19 level. Knowing the running profile of the next age category, the fitness coach can prepare the players so that by the end of the season, they are approaching the running performance levels of the next group, with the goal of ensuring a smoother transition. Finally, regarding the two halves of the game, it is evident that fitness coaches should train players during the microcycle to maintain high movement intensities even under fatigue. Full article

The aim of this study was to analyze and compare the external load demands of players from the Spanish women’s national football teams across the U-17, U-20, and senior categories during their respective FIFA World Cup participations. Key kinematic variables were assessed via global positioning systems (GPS), including total distance (TD), high-speed running (HSR; ≥18 km·h−1), sprint distance (≥21 km·h−1), accelerations (>3 m·s−2), decelerations (<–3 m·s−2), and high metabolic load distance (HMLD) during 3 world cups (U17, U20 and senior). Significant differences were observed between the senior team and both U-20 and U-17 in nearly all variables, with greater magnitude as the intensity of the metrics increased, showing effect sizes ranging from moderate to very large (d = 0.95 to 4.76). Positional analysis by categories showed that senior full backs (FB) and central midfielders (CM) showed higher demands compared to U-20 and U-17. For TD, senior covered more than U-17 (FB: p = 0.001; d = 1.11 | CM: p = 0.023; d = 0.97), with small differences vs. U-20 (d ≤ 0.54). In HSR, both positions outperformed U-17 and U-20 (FB: p ≤ 0.007; d = 0.87–1.15 | CM: p ≤ 0.031; d = 0.71–1.11). In HMLD, both FB and CM displayed very large differences compared to U-17 and U-20 (all p < 0.001; d = 2.54–6.16). These findings underscore the need for progressive development of locomotor capacities from early stages, considering both age category and playing position, to facilitate a more seamless transition to elite-level football. Terahertz (THz) frequencies, spanning from 0.1 to 1 THz, are poised to play a pivotal role in the development of future 6G wireless communication systems. These systems aim to utilize photonic technologies to enable ultra-high data rates—on the order of terabits per second—while maintaining low latency and high efficiency. In this work, we present a novel photonic method for generating sub-THz vector signals within the THz band, employing a semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) and phase modulator (PM) to create an optical frequency comb, combined with in-phase and quadrature (IQ) modulation techniques. We demonstrate, both through simulation and experimental setup, the generation and successful transmission of a 0.1 THz vector. The process involves driving the PM with a 12.5 GHz radio frequency signal to produce the optical comb; then, heterodyne beating in a uni-traveling carrier photodiode (UTC-PD) generates the 0.1 THz radio frequency signal. This signal is transmitted over distances of up to 30 km using single-mode fiber. The resulting 0.1 THz electrical vector signal, modulated with quadrature phase shift keying (QPSK), achieves a bit error ratio (BER) below the hard-decision forward error correction (HD-FEC) threshold of 3.8 × 103. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first experimental demonstration of a 0.1 THz photonic vector THz wave based on an SOA and a simple PM-driven optical frequency comb. Full article

This study evaluates hierarchical clustering methodologies to identify patterns associated with timeout requests for EuroLeague basketball games. Using play-by-play data from 3743 games spanning the 2008–2023 seasons (over 1.9 million instances), we applied Principal Component Analysis to reduce dimensionality and tested multiple agglomerative and divisive clustering techniques (e.g., Ward and DIANA) with different distance metrics (Euclidean, Manhattan, and Minkowski). Clustering quality was assessed using internal validation indices such as Silhouette, Dunn, Calinski–Harabasz, Davies–Bouldin, and Gap statistics. The results show that Ward.D and Ward.D2 methods using Euclidean distance generate well-balanced and clearly defined clusters. Two clusters offer the best overall quality, while four clusters allow for meaningful segmentation of game situations. The analysis revealed that teams that did not request timeouts often exhibited better scoring efficiency, particularly in the advanced game phases. These findings offer data-driven insights into timeout dynamics and contribute to strategic decision-making in professional basketball. Full article

Background/Objectives: The hippocampus is an essential part of the central nervous system (CNS); it plays a significant role in social–cognitive memory processing. Prenatal exposure to valproic acid (VPA) can lead to impaired hippocampal functions. In this study, we evaluated the effect of plumbagin (PLB) as a natural product on spatial learning and memory, neuro-morphological changes, and inflammation levels in a VPA-induced autism model during adolescence. Methods: Pregnant Wistar rats received a single intraperitoneal (i.p.) injection of VPA (600 mg/kg) or saline on gestational day 12.5. The male offspring were then categorized and assigned to five groups: Saline+DMSO-, VPA+DMSO-, and VPA+PLB-treated groups at doses of 0.25, 0.5, or 1 mg/kg. Spatial learning and memory were evaluated using the Morris water maze. Histopathological evaluations of the hippocampus were performed using Nissl and hematoxylin–eosin staining, as well as immunofluorescence. The pro-inflammatory cytokine levels were also quantified by quantitative real-time PCR. Results: The findings revealed that a VPA injection on gestational day 12.5 is associated with cognitive impairments in male pups, including a longer escape latency and traveled distance, as well as decreased time spent in the target quadrant. Treatment with PLB significantly enhanced the cognitive function, reduced dark cells, and ameliorated neuronal–morphological alterations in the hippocampus of VPA-exposed rats. Moreover, PLB was found to reduce astrocyte activation and the expression levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines. Conclusions: These findings suggest that PLB partly mitigates VPA-induced cognitive deficits by ameliorating hippocampal inflammation levels. Full article

Methionine residues in proteins and peptides are frequently oxidized by losing one electron. The presence of nearby amide groups is crucial for this process, enabling methionine to participate in long-range electron transfer. Hydroxyl radical (HO) plays an important role being generated in aerobic organisms by cellular metabolisms as well as by exogenous sources such as ionizing radiations. The reaction of HO with methionine mainly affords the one-electron oxidation of the thioether moiety through two consecutive steps (HO addition to the sulfur followed by HO elimination). We recently investigated the reaction of HO with model peptides mimicking methionine and its cysteine-methylated counterpart, i.e., CH3C(O)NHCHXC(O)NHCH3, where X = CH2CH2SCH3 or CH2SCH3 at pH 7. The reaction mechanism varied depending on the distance between the sulfur atom and the peptide backbone, but, for a better understanding of various suggested equilibria, the analysis of the flux of protons is required. We extended the previous study to the present work at pH 4 using pulse radiolysis techniques with conductivity and optical detection of transient species, as well as analysis of final products by LC-MS and high-resolution MS/MS following γ-radiolysis. Comparing all the data provided a better understanding of how the presence of nearby amide groups influences the one-electron oxidation mechanism. Full article

Hydrogen produced from renewable sources has the potential to tackle various energy challenges, from allowing cost-effective transportation of renewable energy from production to consumption regions to decarbonizing intensive energy consumption industries. Due to its application versatility and non-greenhouse gaseous emissions characteristics, it is expected that hydrogen will play an important role in the decarbonization strategies set out for 2050. Currently, there are some barriers and challenges that need to be addressed to fully take advantage of the opportunities associated with hydrogen. The present work aims to characterize the state of the art of different hydrogen production, storage, transport, and distribution technologies, which compose the hydrogen value chain. Based on the information collected it was possible to conclude the following: (i) Electrolysis is the frontrunner to produce green hydrogen at a large scale (efficiency up to 80%) since some of the production technologies under this category have already achieved a commercially available state; (ii) in the storage phase, various technologies may be suitable based on specific conditions and purposes. Technologies of the physical-based type are the ones mostly used in real applications; (iii) transportation and distribution options should be viewed as complementary rather than competitive, as the most suitable option varies based on transportation distance and hydrogen quantity; and (iv) a single value chain configuration cannot be universally applied. Therefore, each case requires a comprehensive analysis of the entire value chain. Methodologies, like life cycle assessment, should be utilized to support the decision-making process. Full article

This paper presents a study on open energy data in Spain and its contribution to sustainability, analyzing its content and its reuse potential. Since energy plays an important role in the sustainability and economic development of a country or region, energy strategies must be managed through public policies that promote the development of this sector. In this sense, open data is relevant for decision-making in the energy sector, especially in areas such as energy consumption and renewable energy policies. Our research aims to analyze the work of Spain’s autonomous communities in the field of energy information by conducting a population analysis of all datasets tagged in the energy category. After compiling the information and eliminating irrelevant datasets (those that are mislabeled, obsolete, or have a scope less than the level of the autonomous community), it can be seen that the supply is very scarce and that this category is one of the least populated among all existing categories. The typological analysis indicates that information on consumption is the one offering the most datasets, followed, at a short distance, by heterogeneous and difficult-to-classify information and by the set related to energy certificates or audits (the most recurrent, as it is offered only once by the autonomous communities). One of the main findings of the research is the heterogeneity of the initiatives and the significant differences in scores on an indicator created for this purpose. The ranking has taken into account both the existence of information and the quality of reuse, with Catalonia, the Basque Country, and Cantabria being the leaders (with Castilla y León, the performance reaches 60%, so the three remaining communities do not reach 40%). The research concludes with recommendations based on the gaps detected: more data should be published that can drive economic development and environmental sustainability, reduce heterogeneity, and facilitate the use of these data for greater applicability, which will increase the chances that open energy data can contribute more to sustainability. Background: South Asian Americans (SAA) are one of the fastest-growing immigrant groups in the U.S. and face significant health disparities, particularly regarding chronic diseases like diabetes, hypertension, and cardiovascular disease. Dietary patterns play a crucial role in these disparities, with acculturation to Western diets linked to poorer health outcomes. Despite this, the impact of food insecurity on dietary habits among SAAs remains underexplored. This study aims to examine the availability, cost, and quality of ethnic food items and how food insecurity influences dietary practices in Southern California’s SAA population. Methods: The study was conducted in San Bernardino County, California, with field data collection focused on five South Asian ethnicity-specific grocery stores and three Western grocery stores. We assessed the availability and cost of key ingredients for commonly prepared SAA dishes. Additionally, focus group interviews were held with South Asian immigrants to understand food insecurity challenges and dietary adaptations. Results: The study found significant disparities in food availability and cost between SAA-ethnic grocery stores and Western stores. SAA stores were less accessible and more widely dispersed, with an average distance of 10 miles between them. While ingredients like ginger paste and cumin powder were available in both types of stores, items such as ghee, fenugreek seeds, and black gram were harder to find in Western stores. Focus group participants noted that ethnic foods, especially vegetarian ingredients, were more expensive than Western alternatives, leading many to substitute traditional meals with cheaper, less nutritious options. Participants also raised concerns about the poor quality of items in ethnic stores, such as expired produce, which further limited their food choices. Conclusions: Food insecurity, driven by limited availability, high cost, and poor quality of ethnic foods, poses significant challenges to the SAA community’s diet and health. Addressing these barriers could improve food security and health outcomes among SAA immigrants. Full article

This study analyses the physical performance variables involved in different training tasks aimed at replicating the worst-case scenarios (WCSs) observed during official matches in professional football, with a focus on playing positions and occurrences within a 1 min period. Data were collected from 188 training sessions and 42 matches of a Spanish Second Division team during the 2021/2022 season. All data were reported on a per-player basis. GPS tracking devices were used to record physical variables such as total distance, high-speed running (HSR), sprints, accelerations, decelerations, and high metabolic load distance (HMLD). Players were grouped according to their match positions: central defenders, wide players, midfielders and forwards. The results showed that none of the training tasks fully replicated the physical demands of match play. However, task TYPEs 11 (Large-Sided Games) and 9 (small-sided games with orientation and transition) were the closest to match demands, particularly in terms of accelerations and decelerations. Although differences were observed across all variables, the most pronounced discrepancies were observed in sprint and HSR variables, where training tasksfailed to reach 60% of match demands. These findings highlight the need to design more specific drills that simulate the intensity of WCS, allowing for more accurate weekly training load planning. This study offers valuable contributions for optimising performance and reducing injury risk in professional footballers during the competitive period. Full article

Retail Development and Corporate Environmental Disclosure: A Spatial Analysis of Land-Use Change in the Veneto Region (Italy)

Corporate environmental claims often neglect the substantial ecological impact of land-use changes. This case study examines the spatial dimension of retail-driven land-use transformation by analyzing supermarket expansion in the Veneto region (northern Italy), with a focus on a large grocery retailer. We evaluated its corporate environmental claims by assessing land consumption patterns from 1983 to 2024 using Geographic Information Systems (GIS). The GIS-based methodology involved geocoding 113 Points of Sale (POS—individual retail outlets), performing photo-interpretation of historical aerial imagery, and classifying land-cover types prior to construction. We applied spatial metrics such as total converted surface area, land-cover class frequency across eight categories (e.g., agricultural, herbaceous, arboreal), and the average linear distance between afforestation sites and POS developed on previously rural land. Our findings reveal that 65.97% of the total land converted for Points of Sale development occurred in rural areas, primarily agricultural and herbaceous lands. These landscapes play a critical role in supporting urban biodiversity and providing essential ecosystem services, which are increasingly threatened by unchecked land conversion. While the corporate sustainability reports and marketing strategies emphasize afforestation efforts under their “We Love Nature” initiative, our spatial analysis uncovers no evidence of actual land-use conversion. Additionally, reforestation activities are located an average of 40.75 km from converted sites, undermining their role as effective compensatory measures. These findings raise concerns about selective disclosure and greenwashing, driving the need for more comprehensive and transparent corporate sustainability reporting. The study argues for stronger policy frameworks to incentivize urban regeneration over greenfield development and calls for the integration of land-use data into corporate sustainability disclosures. By combining geospatial methods with content analysis, the research offers new insights into the intersection of land use, business practices, and environmental sustainability in climate-vulnerable regions.
