Plastic pollution is a growing environmental and social concern, particularly in Southeast Asia, where urban rivers serve as key pathways for transporting waste to marine environments. This scoping review examines 110 peer-reviewed studies to understand how plastic pollution in waterways is being researched, addressed, and reconceptualized. Drawing from the literature across environmental science, technology, and social studies, we identify four interconnected areas of focus: urban pollution pathways, innovations in monitoring and methods, community-based interventions, and interdisciplinary perspectives. Our analysis combines qualitative synthesis with visual mapping techniques, including keyword co-occurrence networks, to explore how real-time tools, such as IoT sensors, multi-sensor systems, and geospatial technologies, are transforming the ways plastic waste is tracked and analyzed. The review also considers the growing use of novel theoretical frameworks, such as post-phenomenology and ecological materialism, to better understand the role of plastics as both pollutants and ecological agents. Despite progress, the literature reveals persistent gaps in longitudinal studies, regional representation, and policy translation, particularly across the Global South. We emphasize the value of participatory models and community-led research in bridging these gaps and advancing more inclusive and responsive solutions. These insights inform the development of plastic tracker technologies currently being piloted in Vietnam and contribute to broader sustainability goals, including SDG 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation), SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production), and SDG 14 (Life Below Water). Introduction: Given the impact of aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (aSAH) on patients’ health, preclinical research is substantial to understand its pathophysiology and improve treatment strategies, which necessitates reliable and comprehensive animal models. Traditionally, aSAH models utilize iliac or subclavian access for angiography, requiring invasive procedures that are associated with significant risks and animal burden. This pilot study explores a less invasive method of digital subtraction angiography (DSA) by using the auricular artery (AA) as an alternative access point. Our aim was to demonstrate the feasibility of this refined technique, with the intention of reducing procedural risks, providing shorter operation times with enhanced neurological recovery, and simplifying the process for both researchers and animals. Materials and Methods: In this study, six female New Zealand white rabbits (3.2–4.1 kg body weight) underwent experimental induction of aSAH via a subclavian-cisternal shunt. The initial steps of this procedure followed traditional techniques, consisting of subclavian access through microsurgical preparation, followed by DSA to analyze retrograde filling of the basilar artery (BA). To evaluate the alternative method, on day 3 after induction of aSAH, DSA was performed via the AA instead of the traditional subclavian or femoral access. A catheter was placed in the AA to allow retrograde filling of the BA. This approach aimed to simplify the procedure while maintaining comparable imaging quality. Results: All rabbits survived until the study endpoint. Postoperatively, two rabbits showed signs of hemisyndrome, which significantly improved by the time of follow-up. No additional morbidities were observed. Upon euthanasia and necropsy, all animals showed clear subarachnoid bleeding patterns. DSA via the AA produced strong contrasting of the BA comparable to the traditional method. Conclusions: This technical note presents an initial evaluation of AA access as a feasible and potentially advantageous method for DSA in a rabbit model of blood shunt subarachnoid hemorrhage. The method shows promise in reducing invasiveness and procedural complexity, but further studies are required to fully establish its efficacy and safety. Future research should focus on expanding the sample size, refining the anatomical understanding of the AA, and continuing to align with ethical considerations regarding animal welfare. Full article

Background: Pigmented superficial skin lesions pose a persistent diagnostic challenge due to overlapping clinical and dermoscopic appearances between benign and malignant entities. While histopathology remains the gold standard, there is growing interest in non-invasive imaging models that can preoperatively stratify malignancy risk. This methodological pilot study was designed to explore the feasibility and initial diagnostic performance of a novel radiology-adapted logistic regression approach. To develop and preliminarily evaluate a new logistic model integrating both structural (lesion size, depth) and vascular (Doppler patterns) ultrasonographic features for non-invasive risk stratification of pigmented superficial skin lesions. Material and Methods: In this prospective single-center pilot investigation, 44 patients underwent standardized high-frequency grayscale and Doppler ultrasound prior to excisional biopsy. Lesion size, depth, and vascularity patterns were systematically recorded. Three logistic regression models were constructed: (1) based on lesion size and depth, (2) based on vascularity patterns alone, and (3) combining all parameters. Model performance was assessed via ROC curve analysis. Intra-observer reliability was determined by repeated measurements on a random subset. Results: The lesion size and depth model yielded an AUC of 0.79, underscoring the role of structural features. The vascularity-only model showed an AUC of 0.76. The combined model demonstrated superior discriminative ability, with an AUC of approximately 0.85. Intra-observer analysis confirmed excellent repeatability (κ > 0.80; ICC > 0.85). Conclusions: This pilot study introduces a novel logistic framework that combines grayscale and Doppler ultrasound parameters to enhance non-invasive malignancy risk assessment in pigmented superficial skin lesions. These encouraging initial results warrant larger multicenter studies to validate and refine this promising approach. Full article

Paraprofessionals play a crucial role in supporting both teachers and students within a classroom, even though the specifics of their duties vary. While their responsibilities involve supporting student achievement, research has shed light that many paraprofessionals feel unprepared for their responsibilities in the classroom. This study aimed to address a gap in the existing literature by exploring how a professional development program that mirrors the trainings special education teachers receive would impact paraprofessionals and help them feel more prepared for their responsibilities in the classroom. Employing a generic qualitative methodology, this study sought to capture the experiences of 43 paraprofessionals. Data collection involved an online open-ended questionnaire at the start and conclusion of the school year. The study’s outcomes revealed five patterns in the data: (a) paraprofessionals struggled with collaborating with classroom teams at the start of the school year, (b) paraprofessionals struggled with managing student behavior at the start of the school year, (c) professional development was helpful to most of the paraprofessionals, (d) professional development led to better preparedness to address challenging behavior, and (e) professional development led to better preparedness to address the instructional needs of students with disabilities. Following a thorough analysis and synthesis, these patterns were condensed into two general themes: the importance of professional development for paraprofessionals and the importance of presenting the professional development that teachers receive on a continuous basis to paraprofessionals as well. These findings are significant for school leaders and educators, as they highlight the importance of providing professional development to paraprofessionals while supporting students with disabilities. Complement or Crowd Out? The Impact of Cross-Tool Carbon Control Policy Combination on Green Innovation in Chinese Cities

In order to fulfill the commitment to the “dual carbon goal” at an early date, China has implemented a series of carbon control policies. However, the actual impact of these policy combinations on green innovation in Chinese cities remains unknown. Taking the implementation of the low-carbon pilot policy (LCP) and the carbon emission trading pilot policy (CET) as the research opportunity, this paper uses panel data from 276 prefecture-level cities and a multiple-period difference-in-differences (DID) model to explore the impact of carbon control policy combination on green innovation in China and their mechanisms. The results indicate the following: A single LCP or CET can significantly boost green innovation. However, the impact of cross-tool carbon control policy combination on green innovation is notably greater than that of a single policy, with a trend of increasing effectiveness over time. Even after a series of robustness tests, this conclusion remains valid. Heterogeneity analysis shows that the promotion effect is more significant in the eastern region and high-level administrative cities. The policy combination incentivizes green innovation through fiscal technology expenditure and public environmental awareness, focusing more on fostering strategic green innovation. Consequently, the Chinese government should tailor policy combinations to specific contexts, expand their implementation judiciously, and consistently drive forward green innovation. Full article

Demand for mental health support has exerted unprecedented pressure on statutory services. Innovative solutions such as Green or Nature-Based Social Prescribing (NBSP) programmes may help address unmet need, improve access to personalised treatment, and support the sustainable delivery of primary services within a prevention model of population health. We piloted an innovative health economics-informed Social Return on Investment (SROI) analysis and forecast of a ‘Making Well’ therapeutic craft and horticulture programme for mental health between October 2021 and March 2022. Quantitative and qualitative outcome data were collected from participants with mild-to-moderate mental health conditions at baseline and nine-weeks follow-up using a range of validated measures, including the Short Warwick–Edinburgh Mental Well-being Scale, ICEpop CAPability measure for Adults (ICECAP-A), General Self-Efficacy Scale (GSES), and a bespoke Client Service Receipt Inventory (CSRI). The acceptability and feasibility of these measures were explored. Results indicate that the Making Well programme generated well-being-related social value in the range of British Pound Sterling (GBP) GBP 3.30 to GBP 4.70 for every GBP 1 invested. Our initial pilot forecast suggests that the programme has the potential to generate GBP 5.40 to GBP 7.70 for every GBP 1 invested as the programme is developed and delivered over a 12-month period. Despite the small sample size and lack of a control group, our results contribute to the evidence-base for the effectiveness and social return on investment of NBSP as a therapeutic intervention for improving health and well-being and provides an example of the use of health economic well-being outcome measures such as ICECAP-A and CSRIs in social value analysis. Combining SROI evaluation and forecast methodologies with validated quantitative outcome measures used in the field of health economics can provide valuable social cost–benefit evidence to decision-makers. At a critical juncture in the global low-carbon transition, the role of artificial intelligence (AI) in facilitating low-carbon growth has become increasingly significant. To accelerate the integration of AI with socio-economic development, China has established National New Generation Artificial Intelligence Innovation and Development Pilot Zones (AIPZ). However, the specific impact of these zones on low-carbon development remains unclear. This study utilized panel data from 30 provinces in China from 2013 to 2022 and employed the multi-period difference-in-differences (DID) model and the spatial autoregressive difference-in-differences (SARDID) model to examine the carbon emissions reduction effects of the AIPZ policy and its spatial spillover effects. The findings revealed that the policy significantly reduced carbon emissions intensity (CEI) across provinces, with an average reduction effect of 6.9%. The analysis of the impact mechanism confirmed the key role of human, technological, and financial resources. Heterogeneity analysis indicated varying effects across regions, with more significant reductions in eastern and energy-rich areas. Further analysis using the SARDID model confirmed spatial spillover effects on CEI. This paper aims to enhance understanding of the relationship between AIPZ and CEI and provide empirical evidence for policymakers during the low-carbon transition. By exploring the potential of the AIPZ policy in emissions reduction, it proposes targeted strategies and implementation pathways for policymakers and industry participants to promote the sustainable development of China’s low-carbon economy. A novel brain positron emission tomography (PET) radioligand, [11C]HY-2-15, has potential for imaging alpha-synuclein aggregations in multiple system atrophy and misfolded tau proteins in tauopathies, based on its high binding affinity in disease brain tissue homogenates. Here, we demonstrate that [3H]HY-2-15 has the capability to bind to aggregated alpha-synuclein in multiple system atrophy brain and tau aggregations in progressive supranuclear palsy and corticobasal degeneration brain tissues via in vitro autoradiography study. A first-in-human pilot multicenter clinical study recruited a total of 10 subjects including healthy controls and patients with Parkinson’s disease, multiple system atrophy, or progressive supranuclear palsy. The study revealed that [11C]HY-2-15 has a relatively higher specific uptake in the pallidum and midbrain of patients with progressive supranuclear palsy. Total-body scans performed on the PennPET Explorer showed the radiotracer was cleared by renal excretion. However, the rapid metabolism and low brain uptake resulted in a limited signal of [11C]HY-2-15 in brain. Full article

Agricultural education of future farmers includes a period of practice in Denmark. How can this be shaped to best support the education and future life as farmers? This question motivated a pilot study of how different factors influenced farmer apprentices’ learning in their on-farm apprentice period, based on interviews of farmer students and host farmers, and to explore this in the historical and social context of Danish agriculture. Three focus group interviews with 24 farmer apprentices were conducted, as well as 14 qualitative semi-structured phone interviews with host farmers. Four major themes emerged from the interviews with host farmers and apprentices: There is a potential conflict between the two perspectives in themes one and two: The host farm primarily as a learning site, versus the apprentice being primarily a farm laborer learning through working on the host farm as a workplace. Thirdly, the on-farm and social environment was suggested to have significant importance for developing into a future farmer, which resonates with the concept of Communities of Practice (CoP). This pilot study raised important issues regarding how future farmers are motivated and educated, highlighting that agricultural colleges play a pivotal role in articulating and guiding how the apprentice learning on-farm can be meaningfully integrated into the other parts of the farmer education. Effects of Stretching and Resistance Training on Psychophysical Awareness: A Pilot Study

Muscle–joint flexibility is defined as the ability of a muscle to stretch in a controlled manner, allowing a wide range of movement at the joints. While numerous methodologies exist for improving flexibility, few studies have investigated the role of athletes’ perceptual processes and awareness related to their own body and movement control during such training. In this pilot study, we explored how two different training protocols—static and dynamic stretching (control group, CON) and multi-joint resistance training (experimental group, EXP)—influence both flexibility and psychophysical awareness, understood as a multidimensional construct involving perceived flexibility improvements, self-assessed control over exercise execution, and cognitive-emotional responses such as engagement, motivation, and satisfaction during physical effort. The study involved 24 male amateur track-and-field athletes (mean age 23 ± 2.5 years), randomized into two equal groups. Over 12 weeks, both groups trained three times per week. Flexibility was assessed using the Sit and Reach Test at three time points (pre-, mid-, and post-intervention). A 2 × 3 mixed ANOVA revealed a significant group × time interaction (F = 20.17, p < 0.001), with the EXP group showing greater improvements than the CON group. In the EXP group, Sit and Reach scores increased from pre = 28.55 cm (SD = 4.91) to mid = 29.39 cm (SD = 4.67) and post = 29.48 cm (SD = 4.91), with a significant difference between pre and post (p = 0.01; d = 0.35). The CON group showed minimal changes, with scores of pre = 28.66 cm (SD = 4.92), mid = 28.76 cm (SD = 5.03), and post = 28.84 cm (SD = 5.10), and no significant difference between pre and post (p = 0.20; d = 0.04). Psychophysical awareness was assessed using a custom questionnaire structured on a 5-point Likert scale, with items addressing perception of flexibility, motor control, and exercise-related bodily sensations. The questionnaire showed excellent internal consistency (Cronbach’s α = 0.92). Within the EXP group, psychophysical awareness increased significantly (from 3.50 to 4.17; p = 0.01; d = 0.38), while no significant change occurred in the CON group (p = 0.16). Post-hoc power analysis confirmed small to moderate effect sizes within the EXP group, although between-group differences lacked sufficient statistical power. These results suggest that resistance training may improve flexibility and concurrently enhance athletes’ psychophysical self-awareness more effectively than traditional stretching. Such findings offer practical implications for coaches seeking to optimize flexibility training by integrating alternative methods that promote both physical and perceptual adaptations. Full article

This paper presents the development, implementation, and outcomes of the ELEVATE-US-UP (Engaging Learners through Exploration of Visionary Academic Thought and Empowerment in UnderServed and UnderPrivileged communities) teaching methodology, an equity-centered, culturally responsive pedagogical framework designed to enhance student engagement, academic performance, and science identity among underrepresented learners. This framework was piloted at Northern New Mexico College (NNMC), a Hispanic- and minority-serving rural institution. ELEVATE-US-UP reimagines science education as a dynamic, inquiry-driven, and contextually grounded process that embeds visionary scientific themes, community relevance, trauma-informed mentoring, and authentic assessment into everyday instruction. Drawing from culturally sustaining pedagogy, experiential learning, and action teaching, the methodology positions students not as passive recipients of content but as knowledge-holders and civic actors. Implemented across upper-level environmental science courses, the method produced measurable gains: class attendance rose from 67% to 93%, average final grades improved significantly, and over two-thirds of students reported a stronger science identity and a newfound confidence in their academic potential. Qualitative feedback highlighted increased perceptions of classroom inclusivity, community relevance, and instructor support. By centering on cultural context, student voice, and place-based application, the ELEVATE-US-UP framework offers a replicable and scalable model for educational transformation in underserved regions. Development and Evaluation of an Immersive Virtual Reality Application for Road Crossing Training in Older Adults

Background/Objectives: Aging is often accompanied by physical and cognitive decline, affecting older adults’ mobility. Virtual reality (VR) offers innovative opportunities to safely practice everyday tasks, such as street crossing. This study was designed as a feasibility and pilot study to explore acceptance, usability, and preliminary effects of a VR-based road-crossing intervention for older adults. It investigates the use of virtual reality (VR) as an innovative training tool to support senior citizens in safely navigating everyday challenges such as crossing roads. By providing an immersive environment with realistic traffic scenarios, VR enables participants to practice in a safe and controlled setting, minimizing the risks associated with real-world road traffic. Methods: A VR training application called “Wegfest” was developed to facilitate targeted road-crossing practice. The application simulates various scenarios commonly encountered by older adults, such as crossing busy streets or waiting at traffic lights. The study applied a single-group pre-post design. Outcomes included the Timed Up and Go test (TUG), Falls Efficacy Scale-International (FES-I), and Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA). Results: The development process of “Wegfest” demonstrates how a highly realistic street environment can be created for VR-based road-crossing training. Significant improvements were found in the Timed Up and Go test (p = 0.002, d = 0.784) and fall-related self-efficacy (FES-I, p = 0.005). No change was observed in cognitive function (MoCA, p = 0.56). Participants reported increased subjective safety (p < 0.001). Discussion: The development of the VR training application “Wegfest” highlights the feasibility of creating realistic virtual environments for skill development. By leveraging immersive technology, both physical and cognitive skills required for road-crossing can be effectively trained. The findings suggest that “Wegfest” has the potential to enhance the mobility and safety of older adults in road traffic through immersive experiences and targeted training interventions. Conclusions: As an innovative training tool, the VR application not only provides an engaging and enjoyable learning environment but also fosters self-confidence and independence among older adults in traffic settings. Regular training within the virtual world enables senior citizens to continuously refine their skills, ultimately improving their quality of life. Full article

Anti-HMGCR-Antibody-Positive Statin-Induced Myositis: A Pilot Case Series on Treatment with Bempedoic Acid and Immunosuppressive Therapy

Background/Objectives: Immune-mediated necrotizing myopathy (IMNM) is a severe inflammatory myopathy marked by proximal muscle weakness, elevated creatine kinase (CK), and the presence of anti-HMGCR antibodies. Statin exposure is a recognized trigger for anti-HMGCR-positive IMNM, which may persist despite statin withdrawal. This pilot case series explores, for the first time, the use of bempedoic acid—a liver-specific lipid-lowering agent with minimal muscle toxicity—as an alternative to statins in these patients. Methods: We report 10 anti-HMGCR-antibody-positive IMNM patients (6 females, 4 males) previously on statins for primary prevention (8 on atorvastatin, 2 on simvastatin) without prior cardiovascular events. Statins were discontinued at myositis onset. All patients received prednisone and immunosuppressants (methotrexate in 7, mycophenolate in 3), plus bempedoic acid. Anti-HMGCR antibodies were measured using a chemiluminescence method. Results: Their mean anti-HMGCR antibody levels decreased significantly from 390.93 ± 275.22 to 220.89 ± 113.37 CU/L (p = 0.027) after 6 months of treatment. Their CK levels dropped from 1278.9 ± 769.39 to 315.1 ± 157.72 IU/L (p = 0.001), and aldolase dropped from 11.63 ± 2.18 to 6.61 ± 1.22 U/L (p = 0.0001). The mean LDL-C value was 96.1 ± 8.16 mg/dL. No disease recurrence was observed. Autoimmune panels were negative for other myositis-associated and/or -specific antibodies. Conclusions: Bempedoic acid appears to be a safe, effective, and cost-efficient lipid-lowering alternative in statin-intolerant IMNM patients. Larger studies are warranted to confirm its efficacy across different subgroups and to optimize dyslipidemia management in this setting. Full article

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) have been reported to contaminate soil as a result of improper management of waste, wastewater, landfill leachate, biosolids, and a large and indiscriminate use of aqueous film-forming foams (AFFF), posing potential risks to human health. However, their high chemical and thermal stability pose a great challenge for remediation. As a result, there is an increasing interest in identifying and optimizing very effective and sustainable technologies for PFAS removal. This review summarizes both traditional and innovative remediation strategies and technologies for PFAS-contaminated soils. Unlike existing literature, which primarily focuses on the effectiveness of PFAS remediation, this review critically discusses several techniques (based on PFAS immobilization, mobilization and extraction, and destruction) with a deep focus on their sustainability and scalability. PFAS destruction technologies demonstrate the highest removal efficiencies; however, thermal treatments face sustainability challenges due to high energy demands and potential formation of harmful by-products, while mechanical treatments have rarely been explored at full scale. PFAS immobilization techniques are less costly than destruction methods, but issues related to the regeneration/disposal of spent sorbents should be still addressed and more long-term studies conducted. PFAS mobilization techniques such as soil washing/flushing are hindered by the generation of PFAS-laden wastewater requiring further treatments, while phytoremediation is limited to small- or medium-scale experiments. Finally, bioremediation would be the cheapest and least impactful alternative, though its efficacy remains uncertain and demonstrated under simplified lab-scale conditions. Future research should prioritize pilot- and full-scale studies under realistic conditions, alongside comprehensive assessments of environmental impacts and economic feasibility. Full article
