Jack-up offshore platforms, supported by truss legs, are integral to the development of marine energy resources, including oil, gas, and offshore wind. Due to the structural complexity of truss legs, accurately quantifying wave loads is crucial for ensuring the safety and efficiency of energy extraction operations. In this work, a numerical wave tank approach combined with theoretical analysis is employed comprehensively to investigate wave loads on truss legs, with a particular emphasis on the effects of component forces and inflow angle. The results demonstrate that wave loads are not solely dependent on member dimensions. The influencing factors affecting component forces include water depth and phase differences between structural units, which amplify the contribution of the component forces of members near the free surface and without phase difference to the total force. Furthermore, the total force varies periodically with the inflow angle in cycles of 60°. Notably, the influence of inflow angle on the total force becomes negligible when the wavelength substantially exceeds the pile spacing. This framework fundamentally provides a theoretical basis for the structural optimization of Jack-up offshore platform support systems, thereby enhancing the safety and reliability of energy infrastructure. Ground-penetrating radar surveys on structures have a wide range of applications, and they are very useful in solving engineering problems: from detecting reinforcement, studying concrete characteristics, unfilled joints, analyzing brick elements, detecting water content in building bodies, and evaluating structural deformation. They generally pursued small investigation areas with measurements made in direct contact with target structures and for small depths. Detecting deep piles presents specific challenges, and surveys conducted from the ground level may be unsuccessful. To reach great depths, medium-low frequencies must be used, but this choice results in lower resolution. Furthermore, the pile signals may be masked when they are located beneath massive reinforced foundations, which act as an electromagnetic shield. Finally, GPR equipment looks for differences in the dielectric of the material, and the signals recorded by the GPR will be very weak when the differences in the physical properties of the investigated media are modest. From these weak signals, it is difficult to identify information on the differences in the subsurface media. In this paper, we are illustrating an exploration on plinth foundations, supported by drilled piles, submerged in soil, extensive, deep and uninformed. Pulse GPR prospecting was performed in common-offset and single-fold, bistatic configuration, exploiting the exposed faces of an excavation around the foundation. In addition, three velocity tests were conducted, including two in common mid-point and one in zero-offset transillumination, in order to explore the range of variation in relative dielectric permittivity in the investigated media. Thanks to the innovative survey on the excavation faces, it is possible to perform profiles perpendicular to the strike direction of the interface. The electromagnetic backscattering analysis approach allowed us to extract the weighted average frequency attribute section. In it, anomalies emerge in the presence of drilled piles with four piles with an estimated diameter of 80 cm. Full article

Asymmetric structures are widespread in deep excavation engineering and place heightened demands on the deformation control and safety of retaining systems. This study focuses on an asymmetric deep foundation pit project in a soft soil area, using PLAXIS 3D to model the entire excavation process, with model accuracy confirmed by measured values. The study systematically explores the impact of multiple factors—including surcharge loading, external groundwater level, soil internal friction angle and cohesion, and the elastic modulus and embedment ratio of the retaining structure—on the lateral displacement of retaining piles. Orthogonal experimental design is utilized to calculate lateral displacements for various factor combinations, with sensitivity analyzed using the range method and verified by grey relational analysis. The results demonstrate that all factors influence the maximum lateral displacement of retaining piles to varying degrees. Both the orthogonal tests and range analysis consistently identify the influence ranking as soil internal friction angle > soil cohesion > retaining structure elastic modulus > embedment ratio > external groundwater level > surcharge loading. The grey relational analysis yields identical rankings. These results offer theoretical support and practical guidance for the design and monitoring of retaining structures in asymmetric deep excavations within soft soil environments. Full article

Piles are common support elements for marine and coastal structures. The scour around pile foundations caused by currents is a major threat to the stability and safety of these structures. The empirical equations commonly used for estimating the equilibrium scour depth around pile groups are limited in their predicative capability, especially when the current approaches the pile group at an angle. This study applies a Multi-Layer Perceptron Backpropagation (MLP/BP) neural network to develop a general model for predicting the local maximum equilibrium scour depth around pile groups in steady currents. The input parameters for the model include all relevant non-dimensional hydrodynamic and structural variables taking full account of the effects of the pile group arrangement and its orientation relative to the approaching current. The model’s performance was evaluated by comparing its predictions against those generated by multiple other machine learning methods, as well as against results from widely used empirical formulas. A comprehensive sensitivity analysis is carried out to determine the importance ranking of the input parameters on model accuracy. Full article

In recent years, the increasing complexity of shield tunneling environments has made it critical to control the deformation of adjacent excavation structures and surrounding soils. This study employs numerical simulation using MIDAS GTS/NX to comprehensively analyze the spatial interaction factors between shield tunnels and wall-pile-anchor-supported foundation pits. Structural parameters of the retaining system and tunneling conditions are also evaluated to identify the key factors influencing construction-induced deformation. The results show that the maximum settlement of the adjacent retaining wall occurs when the tunnel burial depth reaches 1.4L, where L is the height of the diaphragm wall. In addition, when the horizontal distance between the tunnel and the excavation is less than 0.75D (D being the tunnel diameter), significant settlement deformation is observed in the nearby support structures. A linear correlation is also identified between the variation in tunnel crown settlement and the excavation depth of the overlying pit during tunnel undercrossing. Furthermore, sensitivity analysis indicates that increasing the embedment depth of the diaphragm wall effectively reduces horizontal displacement at the wall base. Increasing the wall thickness decreases displacement in the upper section of the wall. Similarly, increasing pile diameter and anchor length and diameter, while reducing the inclination angle of anchors, are all effective in minimizing the lateral displacement of the support structure. Designing deep foundations in densely urbanized areas presents significant challenges due to complex soil conditions, high groundwater levels, and the proximity of sensitive infrastructure. This study addresses these challenges through the development and numerical analysis of a combined pile–raft foundation (CPRF) system for a 75 m tall hotel tower in Frankfurt am Main, Germany. The construction site is characterized by heterogeneous soil layers and is located adjacent to a historic quay wall and bridge abutments, necessitating strict deformation control and robust structural performance. A comprehensive three-dimensional finite element model was developed using PLAXIS 3D to simulate staged construction and soil–structure interaction (SSI). The CPRF system comprises a 2 m thick triangular raft and 34 large-diameter bored piles (1.5 m in diameter, 40–45 m in length), designed to achieve a load-sharing ratio of 0.89. The raft contributes significantly to the overall bearing capacity, reducing bending moments and settlement. The predicted settlement of the high-rise structure remains within 45 mm, while displacement of adjacent heritage structures does not exceed critical thresholds (≤30 mm), ensuring compliance with serviceability criteria. The study provides validated stiffness parameters for superstructure design and demonstrates the effectiveness of CPRF systems in mitigating geotechnical risks in historically sensitive urban environments. By integrating advanced numerical modeling with staged construction simulation and heritage preservation criteria, the research contributes to the evolving practice of performance-based foundation design. The findings support the broader applicability of CPRFs in infrastructure-dense settings and offer a methodological framework for future projects involving complex SSI and cultural heritage constraints. The Vietnamese Mekong Delta (VMD) is experiencing accelerated coastal erosion, driven by upstream sediment trapping, sea-level rise, and local anthropogenic pressures. This study evaluates the effectiveness of pilot breakwater structures in mitigating erosion and supporting mangrove regeneration along the western coast of Ca Mau Province—one of the delta’s most vulnerable shorelines. An integrated methodology combining field-based wave monitoring, remote sensing analysis of shoreline and mangrove changes (2000–2024), and high-resolution Flow-3D hydrodynamic modeling was employed to assess the performance of four breakwater typologies: semi-circular, pile-rock, Busadco, and floating structures. The results show that semi-circular breakwaters achieved the highest wave attenuation, reducing maximum wave height (Hmax) by up to 76%, followed by pile-rock (69%), Busadco (66%), and floating structures (50%). Sediment accretion and mangrove stabilization were most consistent around the semi-circular and pile-rock types. Notably, mangrove loss slowed significantly after breakwater installation, with the annual deforestation rate dropping from 7.67 ha/year (2000–2021) to 1.1 ha/year (2021–2024). Simulations further revealed that mangrove width strongly influences wave dissipation, with belts under 5 m offering minimal protection. The findings highlight the potential of hybrid coastal protection strategies that combine engineered structures with ecological buffers. Modular solutions such as floating breakwaters offer flexibility to adapt with evolving shoreline dynamics. These findings inform scalable coastal protection strategies under sediment-deficit conditions. This study contributes to Vietnam’s Coastal Development Master Plan and broader resilience efforts under Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 13 and 14, providing evidence to inform the design and scaling of adaptive, nature-based infrastructure in sediment-challenged deltaic environments. Exploring the regional disparities in and spatiotemporal evolution of the new energy vehicle promotion level (NEVPL) is essential for facilitating low-carbon and environmentally sustainable development. This study employs a multidimensional index system to assess the NEVPL across 31 Chinese provinces from 2017 to 2023, utilizing data on NEV ownership, annual NEV sales, the number of public charging piles, and the vehicle-to-pile ratio. The NEVPL scores were estimated using the Entropy-TOPSIS method. Spatial patterns and the mechanisms of regional disparities were examined using a suite of spatial analytical techniques, including the standard deviation ellipse (SDE), gravity center analysis, Dagum Gini coefficient decomposition, and kernel density estimation. The results reveal three principal findings. First, NEVPL exhibited a sustained upward trend nationwide. The eastern region consistently maintained a leading position, the central and western regions demonstrated steady growth, and the northeastern region remained underdeveloped, leading to an expanding regional gap. Second, spatial distribution transitioned from an early dispersed pattern to a structure characterized by both agglomeration and differentiation. The promotional center gradually shifted toward the southeast, and high-value regions became increasingly isolated, forming island-like clusters. Third, spatial inequality was mainly driven by inter-regional differences, which contributed to over 70 percent of the total variance. The rising intra-regional disparity within the eastern region emerged as the predominant factor widening the national gap. These findings offer empirical evidence to support the refinement of new energy vehicle (NEV) policy frameworks and the promotion of balanced regional development. Full article

Offshore wind turbine structures (OWTs) commonly use monopile foundations for support, and long-term exposure to wind–wave cyclic loads may induce changes in foundation stiffness. Variations in foundation stiffness can significantly alter the inherent vibration characteristics of OWTs, potentially leading to amplified vibrations or resonant conditions. In this study, a numerical model considering soil–pile interaction was developed on the FLAC3D platform to analyze the natural frequency of OWTs under long-term cyclic loading. The study first validated the numerical model’s effectiveness through comparison with measured data; a degradation stiffness model (DSM) was then embedded to assess how prolonged cyclic loading affects the degradation of foundation stiffness. A series of parametric studies were conducted in medium-dense and dense sand layers to investigate natural frequency alterations induced by prolonged cyclic loading. Finally, a simplified method for evaluating long-term natural frequency changes was established, and a 3.6 MW offshore wind turbine case was used to reveal the evolution characteristics of its natural frequency under long-term cyclic loads. The data reveal that the natural frequency of the structure undergoes a downward tendency as cyclic loading and frequency increase. To ensure long-term safe operation, the designed natural frequency should preferably shift toward 3P (where P is the blade rotation frequency). Full article

This study investigates the behavior and performance of a newly proposed cone-top pile foundation designed to improve stability in layered, deformable, or strain-sensitive soils. Traditional shallow and uniform conical foundations often suffer from excessive settlement and reduced capacity when subjected to vertical loads and horizontal soil deformations. To address these limitations, a hybrid foundation was developed that integrates an inverted conical base with a central pile shaft and a rolling joint interface between the foundation and the superstructure. Laboratory model tests, full-scale field loading experiments, and axisymmetric numerical simulations using Plaxis 2D (Version 8.2) were conducted to evaluate the foundation’s bearing capacity, settlement behavior, and load transfer mechanisms. Results showed that the cone-top pile foundation exhibited lower settlements and higher load resistance than columnar foundations under similar loading conditions, particularly in the presence of horizontal tensile strains. The load was effectively distributed through the conical base and transferred into deeper soil layers via the pile shaft, while the rolling joint reduced stress transmission to the structure. The findings support the use of cone-top pile foundations in soft soils, seismic areas and areas affected by underground mining, where conventional designs may be inadequate. This study provides a validated and practical design alternative for challenging geotechnical environments. Full article

This study addresses the water basin effect in the underwater sand layer of steel pipe pile cofferdams by integrating the concept from building foundation pits to cofferdam foundation pit analysis. A theoretical derivation is presented for the deformation evolution of steel pipe piles and bottom seals within the cofferdam pit. The cofferdam construction dewatering process is divided into four stages: riverbed excavation for bottom sealing, dewatering to the second support, dewatering to the third support, and dewatering to final bottom sealing. The steel pipe piles are modeled as single-span or multi-span cantilever continuous beam structures. Using the superposition principle, deformation evolution equations for these statically indeterminate structures across the four stages are derived. The bottom seal is simplified to a single-span end-fixed beam, and its deflection curve equation under uniform load and end-fixed additional load is obtained via the same principle. A case study based on the 6# pier steel pipe pile cofferdam of Xi’an Metro Line 10 Jingwei Bridge rail-road project employs FLAC3D for hydrological–mechanical coupling analysis of the entire dewatering process to validate the water basin effect. Results reveal a unique water basin effect in cofferdam foundation pits. Consistent horizontal deformation patterns of steel pipe piles occur across all working conditions, with maximum horizontal displacement (20.72 mm) observed at 14 m below the pile top during main pier construction completion. Close agreements are found among theoretical, numerical, and monitored deformation results for both steel pipe piles and bottom seals. Proper utilization of the formed water basin effect can effectively enhance cofferdam stability. These findings offer insights for similar engineering applications. Full article

To address the engineering issues of difficult quality control, complex construction processes, and long construction periods in cast-in-place protective walls for manually excavated piles, a prefabricated protective wall structure is proposed. This study aims to investigate its mechanical properties and key influencing parameters through experiments. Six groups of prefabricated wall segment specimens with different wall thicknesses (50 mm, 65 mm) and concrete strengths (C50 concrete, reactive powder concrete RPC) were designed, and two-point bending tests were conducted to systematically analyze their failure characteristics, crack development patterns, and strain distribution laws. The test results show that the peak vertical bending displacements at mid-span of the specimens are 11–18 mm (1.83–2.71% of the radius). The 65-mm-thick specimens exhibit 3–10% higher flexural strength than the 50-mm-thick ones, and reactive powder concrete (RPC) specimens of the same thickness show an 8.3% increase in strength compared to C50 concrete specimens. When the load reaches 80% of the ultimate load, abrupt changes in concrete strain occur at the mid-span and loading points, while the strain at the fixed end is only 15–20% of the mid-span strain. The prefabricated protective wall demonstrates superior deformation resistance, with vertical displacements (3–5% of the radius) significantly lower than those of cast-in-place walls. This research clarifies the influence of wall thickness and concrete strength on the mechanical properties of prefabricated protective walls, providing key mechanical parameters to support their engineering applications. To address the inefficiencies and limited spatial resolution of traditional single-point monitoring techniques, this study proposes a multi-scale analysis method that integrates the Multi-Scale Model-to-Model Cloud Comparison (M3C2) algorithm with least-squares plane fitting. This approach employs the M3C2 algorithm for qualitative full-field deformation detection and utilizes least-squares plane fitting for quantitative feature extraction. When applied to the approach span of a cross-river bridge in Hubei Province, China, this method leverages dense point clouds (greater than 500 points per square meter) acquired using a Leica RTC360 scanner. Data preprocessing incorporates curvature-adaptive cascade denoising, achieving over 98% noise removal while retaining more than 95% of structural features, along with octree-based simplification. By extracting multi-level slice features from bridge decks and piers, this method enables the simultaneous analysis of global trends and local deformations. The results revealed significant deformation, with an average settlement of 8.2 mm in the left deck area. The bridge deck exhibited a deformation trend characterized by left and higher right in the vertical direction, while the bridge piers displayed noticeable tilting, particularly with the maximum offset of the rear pier columns reaching 182.2 mm, which exceeded the deformation of the front pier. The bridge deck’s micro-settlement error was ±1.2 mm, and the pier inclination error was ±2.8 mm, meeting the Chinese Highway Bridge Maintenance Code (JTG H11-2004) and the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) standards, and the multi-scale algorithm achieved engineering-level accuracy. Utilizing point cloud densities >500 pt/m2, the M3C2 algorithm achieved a spatial resolution of 0.5 mm, enabling sub-millimeter full-field analysis for complex scenarios. This method significantly enhances bridge safety monitoring precision, enhances the precision of intelligent systems monitoring, and supports the development of targeted systems as pile foundation reinforcement efforts and as improvements to foundations. The use of suction pile wellheads with pre-tilted conductors is expected to help overcome the challenge of high tilting difficulty in offshore gas hydrate extraction. However, structural design and safety control technologies still lack theoretical guidance. In this study, based on Novak’s plane-strain assumption, the potential effects of the pre-tilted conductor on the pipe–soil interaction were considered, along with the influence of working loads and conductor structural parameters. A dynamic vibration model was established to describe the interaction between the suction pile wellhead’s pre-tilted conductor and the surrounding soil, and an analytical expression for the impedance at the conductor’s bottom was derived. Subsequently, parameter analysis was performed using a Python-based computational program (version 3.12.5) to investigate the mechanical response characteristics of the conductor under varying conductor sizes, total lengths, pre-tilted angles, external load magnitudes, and frequency. The results showed that increasing the conductor outer diameter from 32’ to 40’ significantly reduced end displacement by up to 91.24% and bending moments by 30.22%, while shear load decreased by 31.45%, providing important insights for the design of pre-tilted conductors in gas hydrate pilot production. Against the backdrop of the global energy transition, offshore wind power has undergone rapid development. As a vital component of offshore wind power infrastructure, dry shrinkage cracking in concrete piles poses a significant threat to the safe and stable operation of offshore wind power systems. However, the fundamental mechanism of concrete pile cracking during dry shrinkage—particularly the coupled effects of moisture diffusion, meso-structural heterogeneity, and stress evolution—remains poorly understood, lacking a unified theoretical framework. This knowledge gap hinders the development of targeted anti-cracking strategies for offshore concrete structures. Hence, investigating the mechanism of dry shrinkage cracking is of substantial importance. This paper employs numerical simulation to explore the patterns and influencing factors of dry shrinkage cracking in concrete piles for offshore wind turbines, aiming to provide theoretical support for enhancing pile performance. A meshless numerical simulation method based on the smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) framework is developed, which generates concrete meso-structures via a specific algorithm, discretizes the moisture diffusion equation, defines dry shrinkage stress terms, and introduces a fracture coefficient to characterize particle failure, enabling the simulation of concrete dry shrinkage cracking processes. Simulation schemes are designed for varying aggregate percentages, aggregate particle sizes, dry shrinkage coefficients, and moisture diffusion coefficients, using a 100 mm-diameter circular concrete model. Qualitative results reveal the following: Increased aggregate percentages lead to more uniform moisture diffusion, with dry shrinkage crack number and length first increasing and then decreasing; larger aggregate particle sizes exacerbate moisture diffusion non-uniformity and intensify dry shrinkage cracking; higher dry shrinkage coefficients correlate with increased crack number and length; elevated moisture diffusion coefficients accelerate surface water loss, with cracking severity first increasing and then decreasing. The proposed SPH-based meshless method effectively simulates dry shrinkage cracking in offshore wind turbine concrete piles, demonstrating the significant impact of different factors on moisture diffusion and cracking patterns. This study offers insights for applying the SPH method in related fields, deepens the understanding of concrete dry shrinkage cracking mechanisms, and provides a theoretical foundation for the design and optimization of offshore wind power concrete piles.
