Polyetheretherketone (PEEK) is a semi-crystalline thermoplastic polymer which, due to its very high mechanical properties and high chemical resistance, has found application in the automotive, aerospace, chemical, food and medical (biomedical engineering) industries. Owing to the use of additive technologies, particularly the Fused Filament Fabrication (FFF) method, this material is the most widely used plastic to produce skull reconstruction implants, parts of dental implants and orthopedic implants, including spinal, knee and hip implants. PEEK enables the creation of personalized implants, which not only have greater elasticity compared to implants made of metal alloys but also resemble the physical properties of the cortical layer of human bone in terms of their mechanical properties. Therefore, the aim of this article is to characterize polyether ether ketone as an alternative material used in the manufacturing of implants in orthopedics and dentistry. Full article

Background: Burnout syndrome (BS) is an occupational phenomenon resulting from chronic workplace stress that has not been successfully managed. Although there are underlying causes associated with personal attributes, it is generally linked to external factors within the work environment. The aim of the present study was to investigate the impact of lifestyle factors on BS and its dimensions, as well as on suicidal ideation among Spanish professionals dedicated to implant dentistry. Methods: A cross-sectional observational study was conducted in accordance with the Strengthening the Reporting of Observational Studies in Epidemiology (STROBE) guidelines. An electronic survey based on the Maslach Burnout Inventory—Human Services Survey (MBI–HSS) was distributed to members of the Spanish Society of Implants. The data were analysed using descriptive statistical methods. Results: A total of 305 participants (20.9%) responded to the questionnaire. Notably, 10.8% of the professionals reported experiencing suicidal thoughts, a factor significantly associated with the presence of BS. The lifestyle factors associated with BS included the following: not engaging in aerobic exercise for at least 30 min per day (p < 0.05), not having hobbies that facilitate mental disconnection from work (p < 0.001), not following a balanced diet (p < 0.0001), having an insufficient social life (p < 0.0001), and experiencing suicidal ideation (p < 0.01). Conclusions: The surveyed dentists generally reported having healthy lifestyle habits. Nevertheless, one in ten professionals acknowledged having experienced suicidal ideation at some point, highlighting a concerning association with BS. Full article

Background: Genetic polymorphisms in the cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) gene may contribute to individual susceptibility to periodontal disease. A meta-analysis assessed the association between three COX-2 single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) namely, −765 G/C (rs20417), −1195 G/A (rs689466), and 8473 T/C (rs5275), and the risk of CP. Methods: Following the PRISMA 2020 guidelines, we conducted a comprehensive search of five electronic databases and additional sources. The eligible studies were observational (case–control or cohort) with genotypic data comparing individuals with periodontal disease and periodontally healthy controls. Methodological quality was assessed using the Newcastle–Ottawa Scale (NOS), and the certainty of evidence was evaluated via the GRADE framework. Pooled odds ratios (ORs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated under dominant genetic models. Results: Seven studies (n = 1467 participants) met the inclusion criteria. No eligible studies evaluated the 8473 T/C SNP. The meta-analysis of the −765 G/C variant revealed a significant association with periodontal disease (OR = 1.61; 95% CI: 1.12–2.32, p = 0.03; I2 = 0%). For the −1195 G/A variant, the pooled OR was 1.86 (95% CI: 1.00–3.43, p = 0.05; I2 = 35%), suggesting a borderline significant association. The certainty of evidence was graded as moderate for −765 G/C and low for −1195 G/A. Conclusions: The COX-2 −765 G/C polymorphism is significantly associated with increased CP risk, while the −1195 G/A variant shows a potential, though less certain, link. Larger, high-quality studies using standardized classifications are needed to confirm these associations. Full article

Objectives: Digitalization has revolutionized dentistry, introducing advanced technological tools that improve diagnostic accuracy and access to healthcare. This study aims to examine the effects of integrating digital technologies into the dental field, analyzing the associated benefits and risks, with particular paid attention to the therapeutic relationship and decision-making autonomy. Materials and Methods: A literature search was conducted in PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and Cochrane Library, complemented by Google Scholar for non-indexed studies. The selection criteria included peer-reviewed studies published in English between 2014 and 2024, focusing on digital dentistry, artificial intelligence, and medical ethics. This is a narrative review. Elements of PRISMA guidelines were applied to enhance transparency in reporting. Results: The analysis highlighted that although digital technologies and AI offer significant benefits, such as more accurate diagnoses and personalized treatments, there are associated risks, including the loss of empathy in the dentist–patient relationship, the risk of overdiagnosis, and the possibility of bias in the data. Conclusions: The balance between technological innovation and the centrality of the dentist is crucial. A human and ethical approach to digital medicine is essential to ensure that technologies improve patient care without compromising the therapeutic relationship. To preserve the quality of dental care, it is necessary to integrate digital technologies in a way that supports, rather than replaces, the therapeutic relationship. Full article

Three-dimensional (3D) printing has gained substantial interest among scientists and surgeons over the past decade due to its broad potential in medical applications. Its clinical utility has been increasingly recognized, demonstrating promising outcomes for patient care. Currently, 3D printing technology enables surgeons to enhance operative precision by facilitating the creation of patient-specific anatomical models, customized implants, biological tissues, and even surgical instruments. This personalization contributes to improved surgical outcomes, reduced operative times, and shorter postoperative recovery periods. Furthermore, 3D printing significantly aids in the customization of prostheses to conform closely to individual anatomical structures. Beyond therapeutic applications, 3D printing serves as a valuable educational tool in medical training. It enhances case-specific visualization, elucidates fracture mechanisms, and provides tangible models for simulation-based practice. Although the use of 3D printing might be seen as useful mostly in orthopedics, it has expanded into multiple medical specialties, including plastic surgery, dentistry, and emergency medicine. Presently, 3D-printed constructs are routinely employed for preoperative planning, prosthetic development, fracture management, and the fabrication of patient-specific surgical tools. Futuristically, the integration of 3D printing into clinical practice is expected to play a pivotal role in the advancement of personalized medicine, offering substantial benefits for both healthcare providers and patients. (1) Background: Advancements in dental imaging technologies have significantly transformed diagnostic and surgical practices. The integration of cone beam computed tomography (CBCT), artificial intelligence (AI), augmented reality (AR), and virtual reality (VR) is enhancing clinical precision, streamlining workflows, and redefining dental education. This review examines the evolution, applications, and future potential of these technologies in modern dental practice. (2) Methods: A narrative literature review was conducted, synthesizing findings from recent studies on digital radiography, CBCT, AI-assisted diagnostics, 3D imaging, and involving simulation tools (AR/VR). Peer-reviewed journal articles, systematic reviews, and clinical studies were analyzed to explore their impact on diagnosis, treatment planning, surgical execution, and training. (3) Results: Digital and 3D imaging modalities have improved diagnostic accuracy and reduced radiation exposure. AI applications enhance image interpretation, automate clinical tasks, and support treatment simulations. AR and VR technologies provide involved, competency-based surgical training and real-time intraoperative guidance. Integrating 3D printing and portable imaging expands accessibility and personalization in care delivery. (4) Conclusions: The integration of CBCT, AI, AR, and VR represents a paradigm shift in dentistry, elevating precision, efficiency, and patient outcomes. In recent years, attention toward oral health issues has increased with economic development and improvements in quality of life. Biochemical testing technologies offer an efficient method for identifying insidious pathological changes in the oral cavity. Frequent home-based self-screening can enable early identification of dental disease risks, thus facilitating timely interventions. Convenient home-based biochemical testing methods must be user-friendly, cost-effective, and operable without specialized equipment or extensive training. This review summarizes recent advances in convenient biochemical testing methods for the detection and diagnosis of oral diseases, focusing on their reliability, user compliance, and practicality for home-based applications. This review highlights the significance of biomarker distribution imaging for simultaneously identifying multiple lesions and provides perspectives on future research directions. By promoting interdisciplinary collaboration in biochemical diagnostics, this review outlines pathways toward personalized oral healthcare, precision dentistry, and enhanced overall health outcomes. Background: Nanomaterial-based biosensors represent a transformative advancement in oral health diagnostics and therapeutics, offering superior sensitivity and selectivity for early disease detection compared to conventional methods. Their applications span prosthetic dentistry, where they enable the precise monitoring of dental implants, and theranostics for conditions such as dental caries, oral cancers, and periodontal diseases. These innovations promise to enhance proactive oral healthcare by integrating detection, treatment, and preventive strategies. Objectives: This review comprehensively examines the role of nanomaterial-based biosensors in dental theranostics, with a focus on prosthetic applications. It emphasizes their utility in dental implant surveillance, the early identification of prosthesis-related complications, and their broader implications for personalized treatment paradigms. Methods: A systematic literature search was conducted across PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science for studies published between 2010 and early 2025. Keywords included combinations of “nanomaterials”, “biosensors”, “dentistry”, “oral health”, “diagnostics”, “therapeutics”, and “theranostics”. Articles were selected based on their relevance to nanomaterial applications in dental biosensors and their clinical translation. Results: The review identified diverse classes of nanomaterials—such as metallic nanoparticles, carbon-based structures, and quantum dots—whose unique physicochemical properties enhance biosensor performance. Key advancements include the ultra-sensitive detection of biomarkers in saliva and gingival crevicular fluid, the real-time monitoring of peri-implant inflammatory markers, and cost-effective diagnostic platforms. These systems demonstrate exceptional precision in detecting early-stage pathologies while improving operational efficiency in clinical settings. Conclusions: Nanomaterial-based biosensors hold significant promise for revolutionizing dental care through real-time implant monitoring and early complication detection. Despite challenges related to biocompatibility, scalable manufacturing, and rigorous clinical validation, these technologies may redefine oral healthcare by extending prosthetic device longevity, enabling personalized interventions, and reducing long-term treatment costs. Future research must address translational barriers to fully harness their potential in improving diagnostic accuracy and therapeutic outcomes. Full article

Orthodontic treatment demand has surged due to heightened aesthetic concerns and the increased recognition of oral health’s role in overall well-being. This systematic review was conducted by searching across multiple databases (PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, ScienceDirect, and Google Scholar) for observational studies published between January 2000 and April 2024 that assessed personality traits using validated instruments, with inclusion criteria focused on outcomes such as pain perception, treatment attitude, compliance, satisfaction, and quality of life. The results consistently indicate that negative personality traits, particularly high neuroticism, are associated with increased pain perception, lower satisfaction, and reduced compliance. In contrast, positive traits, including extraversion, agreeableness, and conscientiousness, were correlated with improved orthodontic outcomes and more favorable treatment attitudes. Additionally, extraversion and openness were observed to moderate the negative impact of malocclusion severity on oral health-related quality of life. When examining gender, overall differences were minimal; however, some studies indicated that females reported slightly higher pain scores. These findings underscore the multifaceted role of personality by suggesting that psychological profiling should be incorporated into clinical practice. By recognizing individual personality profiles, clinicians can tailor treatment approaches to foster patient-centered care, optimizing orthodontic outcomes and enhancing overall patient satisfaction. Background/Objectives: Artificial Intelligence (AI) is transforming dentistry by offering advanced solutions to improve diagnostic accuracy, optimize treatment planning, and advance patient care. However, as AI becomes more prevalent in dental practice, patients may have concerns and skepticism about its implementation. Therefore, this study aims to explore the impact of the perceived risks and benefits on patients’ willingness to accept AI in dental treatment. Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted in two public dental hospitals, and 586 patients were invited to complete a 28-item questionnaire. In total, 511 questionnaires were completed, resulting in a response rate of 87%. Multiple regression analysis was performed to assess the impact of perceived risks and benefits on patients’ willingness to accept AI in dental treatment. Results: All dimensions of perceived benefits had higher mean scores compared to the perceived risks. Additionally, three perceived benefit dimensions had a significant positive influence on the willingness to accept AI: patient-enhanced experience (β = 47.1, p < 0.001), personalized dental care (β = 22.2, p < 0.001), and cost efficiency (β = 15.3, p < 0.001). Conclusions: The perceived risks had little impact on patients’ willingness to accept AI, suggesting patients may be unaware of or unconcerned about AI’s potential risks in dentistry. Future research should investigate these perceptions and other dimensions influencing AI acceptance. Full article

Background: The COVID-19 pandemic led to significant disruptions in healthcare services worldwide, including dental care, resulting in increased reliance on antibiotics as a substitute for in-person dental interventions. Aim: This study aimed to examine the prescription of different classes of antibiotics at the University Dental Clinical Center of Kosovo during the COVID-19 pandemic and compare it with prescription trends from the pre-pandemic period. Methodology: This study analyzed antibiotic prescription patterns at the University Dental Clinical Center of Kosovo (UCDCK) from 2019 to 2022, focusing on dental patients. Data were collected using a standardized form and a review of electronic health records. Descriptive statistics were used to examine trends, which were compared to data from other countries facing similar healthcare disruptions. The data is organized into quartiles, allowing for a comprehensive understanding of the distribution and trends in antibiotic usage over the four-year period. Results: The study revealed a significant increase in the prescription of broad-spectrum antibiotics, including amoxicillin, clavulanic acid, clindamycin, and metronidazole, during the pandemic period. Data collected from the university dentistry center showed that the highest frequency of antibiotic prescriptions occurred in 2021 (27.6%), while the lowest was in 2022 (22.8%). Metronidazole (39.4%) and amoxicillin with clavulanic acid (38.5%) were the most frequently prescribed antibiotics, together accounting for the majority of prescriptions. Amoxicillin alone represented 18.2%, with other antibiotics prescribed at significantly lower rates. These findings highlight the reliance on these antibiotics for dental treatments and underscore the importance of monitoring prescription trends to optimize usage and minimize resistance risks. Conclusions: The study highlights the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on dental antibiotic prescription practices in Kosovo, revealing a concerning increase in broad-spectrum antibiotic use. This underscores the need for improved antibiotic stewardship in dental settings, particularly during public health crises, to prevent the exacerbation of antimicrobial resistance. Ensuring continued access to routine dental care and developing robust protocols for antibiotic prescription during emergencies are essential to mitigate the long-term public health impacts of increased antibiotic use. Background: Dental anxiety is a significant barrier to dental care, leading to avoidance behaviors and compromised oral health. This study aimed to analyze fear and anxiety during dental hygiene visits with Guided Biofilm Therapy (GBT), focusing on gender differences in psychological and physiological responses to develop a more personalized approach to dental care. Methods: A total of 247 patients participated in this study. Psychological assessments included the Modified Dental Anxiety Scale (MDAS) and the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI X2), while physiological responses were measured through heart rate monitoring before and after procedures. Multivariate regression analysis was conducted to identify predictors of anxiety levels. Results: Multivariate regression analysis identified gender, sensory sensitivity (e.g., absence of tools in the field of view), past traumatic dental experiences, and individual preferences for anxiety reduction as significant predictors of anxiety levels. Gender differences were also observed in anxiety management strategies, with women more frequently preferring the elimination of sensory triggers and direct communication with dental professionals. Conclusions: The findings highlight the importance of personalized anxiety management protocols in dentistry. Tailored communication strategies, optimized clinical environments, and individualized pre- and post-procedure care plans can enhance patient experience and treatment acceptance. Implementing such patient-centered, data-driven approaches aligns with the broader principles of precision medicine in dental care. Full article

Three-dimensional (3D) printing is transforming dentistry by enabling precise and personalized treatments in prosthodontics, orthodontics, and endodontics. However, challenges such as high costs, material limitations, and post-processing requirements hinder its broader adoption. This scoping review aims to explore and map the breadth of evidence regarding the clinical applications, benefits, and limitations of 3D printing in these disciplines, while identifying research gaps and future opportunities. A scoping review was conducted following the PRISMA for scoping reviews framework. Research from PubMed, Google Scholar, and Scopus was systematically searched, covering studies from January 2006 to November 2024. Key topics included applications, material properties, and technological challenges in prosthodontics, orthodontics, and endodontics. Results: In prosthodontics, 3D printing facilitates the fabrication of crowns, bridges, and dentures with high accuracy, though material strength and stability remain challenges. Orthodontics benefits from 3D-printed aligners and diagnostic models, improving patient comfort and treatment precision, but issues with material durability persist. In endodontics, 3D-printed surgical guides and training models enhance procedural accuracy and educational outcomes. Across disciplines, 3D printing reduces production time and enhances customization but incurs high costs and requires significant post-processing. This scoping review highlights the transformative potential of 3D printing in dentistry, providing an overview of current and future advancements and limitations. While 3D printing has improved precision, efficiency, and patient satisfaction, material and cost-related barriers remain. Future research should address these challenges to expand its clinical applicability and enhance personalized dental care. Full article

Background: Health-related programs frequently integrate interprofessional education (IPE) into their training. The COVID-19 pandemic transitioned many IPE programs online, making it essential to assess student expectations and perceived learning outcomes across virtual simulations and in-person settings. Methods: This qualitative study compared student expectations and self-reported outcomes across in-person and virtual case scenarios at a Texas health science center. Responses to open-ended questions from two data collection periods were analyzed using inductive coding and thematic analysis. Results: Students from nursing, medicine, dentistry, public health, and informatics participated in each group. Three major themes emerged from this study: communication, teamwork, and role identification, with self-development and professionalism as major subthemes. For communication, students often described a desire for increased simulations to “practice with interprofessional communication”. Teamwork was the second theme identified, with students discussing the significance of effective teamwork, such as, “It is a good practice to work together, listen to each other, and achieve a common goal of patients getting better”. Additionally, students expressed a desire to better understand the roles of other healthcare professionals across different settings. Conclusions: Realistic IPE simulations may help students build confidence in their team roles while understanding other health professions. To strengthen curriculum design, faculty should include student expectations and perceived outcomes from IPE activities. A limitation of this study is the reliance on self-reported data, which may introduce response bias and the potential variability in student experiences. Full article
