Rapid urbanization has generated substantial economic growth but has also intensified pressure on the environment. China’s New-Type Urbanization Policy (NTU) was designed to promote people-centered, smart governance, and green development. However, whether the NTU policy has improved the coordination between urbanization and environmental quality remains insufficiently examined. Using panel data in China from 2010 to 2021, this study constructs an urbanization–environment coupling coordination degree index based on satellite-derived China’s High-resolution Eco-Environmental Quality dataset and applies a continuous difference-in-differences model to evaluate the impact of NTU policy intensity. The results show that greater NTU policy intensity is associated with significant improvements in urbanization–environment coordination after controlling for pre-existing socioeconomic, ecological, and geographical differences across cities. This finding is consistent with a corrective effect: rather than simply expanding urban scale, NTU appears to help offset the misalignment between urban development and environmental quality. Conditional analyses further suggest that the estimated policy effect is more readily observed where industrial structures are more advanced and local attention to ecological governance is stronger, indicating that these conditions shape the extent to which NTU can be translated into coordination gains. Heterogeneity analyses show that the estimates are statistically more robust in eastern, coastal, and non-resource-based cities, while the comparison across green-coverage groups remains inconclusive because the low-coverage group has a larger but less precisely estimated coefficient. Overall, the findings suggest that NTU has corrective potential, but that its effect is conditional rather than uniform across cities and depends on local governance, industrial, and ecological circumstances. Whether urban park supply effectively responds to residents’ actual use remains a critical issue for public service provision, residents’ health and well-being, and spatial equity in high-density cities. Conventional assessments based on static population data may fail to capture dynamic patterns of human activity, potentially obscuring mismatches between service provision and real demand. This study integrates mobile phone signaling data into a supply–demand assessment framework to evaluate urban park systems from a dynamic population perspective. The framework is applied to Shenzhen as a representative high-density megacity. Park supply is measured by service capacity, coverage, and accessibility, while demand is derived from observed visitation behavior. A Supply–Demand Ratio (SDR) index, combined with Getis-Ord Gi* analysis, is employed to identify spatial patterns of mismatch. The results reveal substantial supply–demand imbalances that are not captured by traditional static indicators, with approximately 30.9% of communities identified as significant cold spots. High-density central areas exhibit a persistent deficit in park services despite relatively high coverage levels, whereas peripheral areas with abundant ecological resources show relative surpluses. These patterns are closely associated with urban functional structure, population mobility, and jobs–housing separation. By uncovering the divergence between nominal accessibility and actual use, this study highlights the limitations of place-based planning approaches and underscores the need for a people-centered perspective. The findings point to the importance of shifting from “opportunity equity” to “outcome equity” in evaluating and improving urban public service provision to foster sustainable urban development. Urban agglomerations serve as crucial spatial carriers for advancing people-centered new urbanization. However, the integrated analysis of urban expansion dynamics, landscape pattern responses, and their driving mechanisms, particularly in ecologically sensitive, late-developing urban agglomerations, remains insufficiently understood. Taking the Guanzhong Plain Urban Agglomeration (GPUA) as the study area, this paper utilizes the Urban Expansion Rate Index (UERI), Urban Expansion Intensity Index (UEII), Landscape Expansion Index (LEI), and Landscape Pattern Metrics (LPMs) to examine urban land expansion and landscape pattern changes, and employs GeoDetector to analyze the driving forces behind these changes. The findings indicate that from 1990 to 2020, the urban land area of the GPUA expanded continuously, with UERI and UEII showing an “increase-then-decrease” trend. Significant disparities exist among cities in the urban expansion areas, with the coexistence of “edge” and “infilling” modes profoundly influencing landscape responses. The driving forces of urban expansion have undergone a stage-specific transition from socioeconomic dominance to ecological policies and natural constraints, with policy–institutional control, socioeconomic development drivers, natural endowment constraints, and improved locational conditions collectively shaping the GPUA’s “spatial landscape” system. The findings of this study provide a scientific basis for territorial spatial governance and sustainable development in ecologically fragile urban agglomerations. Full article

Eye movement research has emerged as a powerful tool in architectural and environmental design, offering insights into how people visually engage with built and natural surroundings. Eye tracking technology enables the study of visual attention, user engagement, and navigation patterns, thereby informing user-centered design. This paper reviews a wide and vast body of research that demonstrates eye tracking’s capacity to inform architectural and environmental design decisions by providing objective, data-driven insights into human perception and interaction with the built world. Key methodologies are discussed, including desktop, mobile, and VR-based systems, as well as recent advances in software analytics and artificial intelligence. Beyond summarizing the existing literature, this review critically evaluates methodological approaches, identifies key challenges, and outlines future research directions. The key findings indicate increased integration of immersive technologies, diversification of analytical paradigms, and expanded application in sustainable and user-centered design. However, methodological heterogeneity, limited ecological validation, and insufficient integration with design optimization frameworks remain significant limitations. This review provides a structured foundation for advancing interdisciplinary research and enhancing evidence-based architectural design. The paper concludes by outlining a forward-looking research agenda for creating more responsive, intuitive, and human-centered environments. Full article

In the face of intensifying climate disruptions, coastal landscapes like Necoclí in Colombia’s Department of Antioquia are sites of both vulnerability and resilience. This paper examines how thick mapping acts as a methodology for decentralized spatial planning and a practice of revolutionary care by amplifying youth voices and fostering situated climate adaptation. Drawing from a participatory mapping process co-developed with young people, we reflect on how community-based approaches can trigger territorial restructuring from the bottom up. Through storytelling, visual documentation, and collective drawing, the mapping process brought to light lived experiences and local ecological knowledge that are often excluded from technocratic spatial integration strategies. These thick maps function as tools for sub-local territorial agency, allowing youth to reconnect with their landscapes while providing municipal administrations with the granular data needed for equitable spatial development. The paper explores how this form of mapping challenges top-down adaptation narratives and enables more inclusive planning for just futures by centering the territorial dimensions of climate risk. Our findings reveal a profound divergence in territorial perception: while older settlers maintain a narrative of loss tied to a lush, forested past, children’s drawings expose an internalized ecological thinning, characterized by the absence of native flora and the threatening proximity of a rising sea. Ultimately, this study demonstrates how thick mapping contributes to socio-ecological transitioning by bridging the gap between national climate policies and the spatial expression of local needs in frontline communities. Amidst global concerns for linguistic diversity, this systematic review synthesizes six decades (1965–2025) of research on Tanka, a critically endangered language spoken by the boat people along Southeast China. Analyzing 42 studies identified through the PRISMA framework, the review reveals significant sociolinguistic and epistemological imbalances. Research output disproportionately focuses on phonetics and phonology (50%), while neglecting grammar, lexicon, and sociolinguistic vitality. Linguistically, Tanka demonstrates substantial contact-induced convergence with Cantonese or Pinghua within multilingual ecologies; nevertheless, it retains distinctive phonological shifts, a unique maritime lexicon, and grammatical innovations, reflecting both regional alignment and endogenous community practices. Its heterogeneous genetic affiliation highlights local sociohistorical contact dynamics. Rapid intergenerational language shift is documented across communities, driven by intersecting pressures, including state-led urbanization, Mandarin-centric education policies, demographic shifts, occupational change, and enduring social stigmatization. Therefore, community attitudes often prioritize socio-economic mobility through dominant languages over heritage maintenance. Persistent gaps include limited syntactic and discourse analysis, minimal use of quantitative and computational methods (e.g., AI-assisted documentation), insufficient geographic coverage, and a lack of longitudinal shift studies. The field thus urgently requires enhanced international engagement via English publications and a decisive shift towards collaborative, community-centered revitalization frameworks that address power asymmetries and harness cultural resilience. Cultural ecosystem services (CESs) are the non-material benefits people derive from ecosystems and are important for human well-being. Most research has focused on individual CES supply–demand relationships, with little systematic study of the overall CES structure, interactions, and mechanisms in metropolitan areas. This study takes the Nanjing Metropolitan Area as a case study, integrating multi-source geospatial data and employing the MaxEnt model, self-organizing maps (SOMs), Spearman correlation analysis, and the Optimal Parameters-based Geographical Detector (OPGD). It analyzes supply–demand matching, trade-offs, synergies, and drivers for four CES categories: aesthetic (AE), recreational entertainment (RE), knowledge education (KE), and cultural diversity (CD). The main findings are as follows: (1) CES supply and demand are spatially zoned: the core area has surplus supply, secondary centers are balanced, and the periphery has both weak supply and demand. (2) Three supply–demand bundles have distinct synergy and trade-off patterns: Bundle 1 primarily exhibits strong synergy between AE and CD; Bundle 2 shows a weak trade-off relationship; and Bundle 3 forms a synergy centered on AE. (3) The explanatory power of driving factors exhibits pronounced spatial heterogeneity: Bundle 1 is dominated by non-quantifiable social factors; Bundle 2 features dual synergistic drivers of population and transportation; and Bundle 3 demonstrates synergistic effects driven by facilities and economic factors. Overall, this study contributes an integrated metropolitan-scale framework that connects CES supply–demand mismatch patterns with bundle typologies, interaction structures, and bundle-specific drivers. The results provide an operational basis for targeted planning and coordinated ecological–cultural governance in the Nanjing Metropolitan Area and offer a transferable reference for other metropolitan regions. The Congo Basin peatlands, the world’s largest tropical peatland complex, are critical for global carbon storage yet remain poorly understood from a human dimension’s perspective. This study explores the perceptions, lifestyles, and knowledge systems of Indigenous Peoples and local communities around Lake Tumba, Democratic Republic of Congo, to identify practices supporting peatland conservation. Using a mixed-methods approach—household surveys (n = 320), focus groups, and statistical analyses including chi-square tests and Multiple Correspondence Analysis (MCA)—the study reveals a predominantly Indigenous agrarian society with limited formal education and strong reliance on peatlands for food (93.7%), construction materials (79.0%), and medicines (75.9%). While regulating services such as carbon storage were seldom recognized, traditional ecological knowledge was evident in sacred species protection, ritual plant and animal uses, and intergenerational knowledge transfer, mainly father-to-son. However, 95.3% of respondents cited religion as the main barrier to this transmission. MCA confirmed that livelihoods, village status, and ritual practices form an integrated socio-cultural system aligned with conservation. These findings stress the role of endogenous governance in sustaining peatland-compatible lifestyles. Conservation efforts should move beyond carbon-centered or top-down approaches to reinforce land tenure, traditional governance, and knowledge transmission, thereby protecting both peatlands and the cultural identities sustaining them. Amidst deepening ecological disruption and widespread disconnection from nature, this study explores the emerging field of Earth Awareness (EA) as a relational and experiential aspect of advancing planetary health. EA practices—rooted in Buddhist, Indigenous, mindfulness, and nature-based traditions—support direct experiences of interconnectedness with Earth, ecological awareness and consciousness, and opportunities to transform underlying patterns and systems. Through 45 reflective dialogues with teachers and practitioners across traditions, this participatory research identifies common inspirations, intentions, and challenges that shape the emerging EA field. Findings reveal that EA is characterized by contemplative practices, rituals, and ceremonies that bridge inner transformation and outer action in the world. Central intentions such as healing, interconnectedness, and justice align closely with planetary health priorities, including mental well-being, equity, and stewardship of the living world. Although the field faces challenges related to access, risk of cultural appropriation, and systemic separation, participants identified opportunities for community building, intercultural exchange, and centering Earth as teacher and co-participant. By mapping coherence in this diverse field, this study highlights EA’s potential to contribute to planetary health by reconnecting people with place, fostering a more ecological consciousness, and supporting culturally grounded pathways for collective action and care for Earth. Background: Drug-resistant tuberculosis (DR-TB) constitutes a serious threat to global public health due to the increase in strains resistant to multiple drugs, especially isoniazid and rifampicin. This resistance increases mortality, estimated at 25.6% globally, and complicates treatments due to its high toxicity and cost. Materials and Methods: A quantitative ecological study was carried out with data on drug-resistant tuberculosis reported in Sivigila in the years (2020–2023) SIVIGILA database. 1694 cases were analyzed, considering sociodemographic variables such as age, sex, nationality and prioritized population groups. Departmental rates per 100,000 inhabitants were calculated with DANE projection, from these choropleth maps were developed. Applying a Kulldorff spatial scan under a Poisson model using the SMERC package of R (version 4.5.1), with windows centered on each department and Monte Carlo simulation contrast to identify high-risk clusters (RR > 1). Results: (DR-TB) Predominantly in men aged 30–44 years, with a progressive increase until 2023 (IRR = 2.11). Three high-risk clusters were detected in the southwest and center of the country. Discussion: Drug-resistant tuberculosis in Colombia showed a sustained increase in the years of study, with a cumulative increase of 110% compared to 2020, associated with economically active people more exposed due to occupational and social factors. The greatest burden was observed in the general population. Cases also increased in groups with social and health vulnerability conditions. Conclusions: The departments of Risaralda, Meta, and Valle del Cauca presented the highest drug resistance rates in Colombia. Full article

As urban boundaries continue to expand and core city areas undergo optimization, megacities such as New York, London, Beijing, Shanghai, and Guangzhou exert a siphon effect on surrounding regions, intensifying population concentration and land demand. However, the imperative for coordinated production-living-ecological space development has placed limits on uncontrolled urban sprawl, highlighting the need for connotative, high-quality urban growth. Recent initiatives in urban village renewal and regeneration aim to enhance land-use efficiency but face persistent challenges—including preserving indigenous settlements and cultural heritage, while creating livable and friendly communities within high-density contexts. Utilizing a mixed-methods approach—combining bibliometrics analysis, questionnaire surveys, and enterprise interviews—this research investigates core challenges to urban renewal. Results indicate that multi-party collaborative governance integrating policy innovation, cultural preservation, human-centered planning, smart technologies, and sustainable development is essential for advancing “people-industry-city integration” in renewal models. Background/Objectives: Major depressive disorder (MDD) is often characterized by mood instability and occupational imbalance, leading to impaired functioning and reduced quality of life. Despite increasing recognition of occupational therapy’s (OT’s) role in mental health, few interventions comprehensively describe both their development process and their theoretical rationale. This article aims to present the systematic development of the mood–occupation balance reciprocal model (MOBILE) intervention for people with MDD, guided by the Medical Research Council (MRC) framework for complex intervention. Methods: Development followed three phases: (1) identifying the evidence base, (2) developing theory, and (3) modeling processes and outcomes. Theoretical foundations integrated occupation- and mood/function-based models with client-centered, lived-experience perspectives. A preliminary ecological momentary assessment (EMA) study on mood and daily function interplay further informed the intervention development. Input from focus groups with occupational therapists and individuals with lived experiences supported its iterative refinement. Following MRC guidelines, a small pilot study (N = 2) was conducted with inpatients diagnosed with MDD to assess the feasibility and acceptability of the intervention and EMA procedures. The pilot evaluated recruitment, adherence, engagement, and practicality of delivery within a clinical setting. Results: The pilot study, although it included only two inpatients and thus limits generalizability, demonstrated high adherence, engagement, and feasibility. The EMA protocol was well tolerated, leading to minor refinements that enhanced its clinical applicability. Stakeholders emphasized the program’s relevance, adaptability, and the value of personalized planning tools. Conclusions: The MOBILE intervention is delivered as an individualized program to enhance mood stability and daily functioning among inpatients with MDD. It provides a theoretically grounded, context-sensitive framework integrating personalized goal setting and strategy use with the construction of a balanced routine. Implications: This article provides a comprehensive account of development procedures to support future evaluation, implementation, and integration into OT mental health practice. Full article

China’s Rural Industrial Integration Under the “Triple Synergy of Production, Livelihood and Ecology” Philosophy: Internal Mechanisms, Level Measurement, and Sustainable Development Paths

Against the backdrop of global agricultural transformation, rural China faces the critical challenge of reconciling economic development with environmental conservation and social well-being. This study, grounded in the rural revitalization strategy, investigates the internal mechanisms, level measurement, and sustainable development paths of rural industrial integration based on the “Triple Integration of Production, Livelihood and Ecology” (PLE) philosophy. Firstly, we discussed the suitability and the mechanisms of this philosophy on China’s rural industrial integration. Secondly, based on a textual corpus extracted from academic journals and policy documents, we employed an LDA topic model to cluster the themes and construct an evaluation indicator system comprising 29 indicators. Then, utilizing data from the China Statistical Yearbook and the China Rural Statistical Yearbook (2013–2022), we measured the level of China’s rural industrial integration using the entropy method. The composite integration index displays a continuous upward trend over 2013–2022, accelerating markedly after the 2015 stimulus policy, yet a temporary erosion of “production–livelihood–ecology” synergy occurred in 2020 owing to an exogenous shock. Lastly, combining the system dynamics model, we simulated over the period 2023–2030 the three sustainable development scenarios: green ecological development priority, livelihood standard development priority and production level development priority. Research has shown that (1) the “Triple Synergy of Production, Livelihood and Ecology” philosophy and China’s rural industrial integration are endogenously unified, and they form a two-way mutual mechanism with the common goal of sustainable development. (2) China’s rural industrial integration under this philosophy is characterized by production-dominated development and driven mainly by processing innovation and service investment, but can be constrained by ecological fragility and external shocks. (3) System dynamics simulations reveal that the production-development priority scenario (Scenario 3) is the most effective pathway, suggesting that the production system is a vital engine driving the sustainable development of China’s rural industrial integration, with digitalization and technological innovation significantly improving integration efficiency. In the future, efforts should focus on transitioning towards a people-centered model by restructuring cooperative equity for farmer ownership, building community-based digital commons to bridge capability gaps, and creating market mechanisms to monetize and reward conservation practices. Effective and fair governance of protected areas (PAs) is essential for their ecological and social sustainability, particularly in contexts of high biodiversity and sociopolitical tensions. This study assessed the governance system of the Serranía del Perijá Regional Natural Park (SPRNP) in Colombia using criteria of effectiveness and justice, through a qualitative methodology grounded in thematic analysis. The research was based on semi-structured interviews and a focus group, with intentional coding supported by artificial intelligence using ATLAS.ti 25 software, which enhanced efficiency and pattern recognition in the construction of a semantic network. This AI-assisted coding approach represents an innovative methodological contribution to the qualitative assessment of PA governance. The findings highlight centralized governance, weak community participation, limited institutional presence, and power asymmetries that undermine equity in decision-making. The exclusion of the Yukpa people from the PA declaration process illustrates broader challenges of Indigenous recognition in Latin American governance contexts. Based on these findings, the study proposes three prospective governance scenarios—community-centered, inter-institutional coordination, and public–private articulation—which offer practical pathways for transforming governance. The study concludes that achieving more equitable and inclusive governance requires institutional strengthening, power redistribution, and the recognition of local knowledge. A viable solution may emerge from an adaptive combination of the proposed scenarios. Full article

As the region with the earliest housing stock market and the most advanced development in China, the Pearl River Delta has experienced extensive housing demolition and construction, leading to buildings having short lifespans. The environmental pollution generated during this process has brought attention to the concept of green buildings. However, whether due to previous patterns of demolition and construction or the significant impacts of social and economic changes in the current and future housing stock contexts, the comprehensive adaptability of human-centered living spaces remains a crucial issue. This focus is strongly related to the residents’ psychological responses, such as sense of belonging, safety, and atmosphere, across different scales of physical environment. However, most housing evaluation systems regarding sustainable issues are green building evaluation systems. And their concept and practice are often accompanied by a neglect of the interrelationship between people and the built environment, as well as a lack of an appropriate methodological framework to integrate these elements in the temporal dimension. This paper primarily tries to provide new answers to old questions about housing durability by reconceptualizing evaluation systems beyond ecological metrics, while simultaneously challenging accepted answers that privilege material and energy indicators over sociocultural embeddedness. Moreover, an effective housing evaluation framework must transcend purely technical or ecological indicators to systematically integrate the temporal and sociocultural factors that sustain long-term residential quality, particularly in rapidly transforming urban contexts. Therefore, theories closely related to building longevity, such as open building and the “level” strategy, were introduced. Based on this combined methodological framework, selected cases of local traditional housing and green building evaluation systems were studied, aiming to identify valuable longevity factors and improved evaluation methods. Furthermore, two rounds of expert consultation and a data analysis were conducted. The first round helped determine the local indexes and preliminary evaluation methods, while the second round helped confirm the weighting value of each index through a questionnaire study and data analysis. This systematic study ultimately established a preliminary long-term housing evaluation system for the Pearl River Delta. Full article
