The micro-scale interplay between the built environment and innovation has attracted increasing scholarly attention. However, discussions on how such microdynamics operate and vary across high-density cities remain insufficient. This study focuses on nine high-density urban centres along the G60 S&T Innovation Valley and employs a fine-grained grid unit, viz. 1 km × 1 km, combined with the gradient boosting decision tree (GBDT) model to address these issues. Results show that urban construction density-related variables, including the building density, floor area ratio, and transportation network density, generally rank higher than the amenity density and proximity-related variables. The former contributes 50.90% of the total relative importance in predicting invention patent application density (IPAD), while the latter two contribute 13.64% and 35.46%, respectively. Threshold effect analysis identifies optimal levels for enhancing IPAD. Specifically, the optimal building density is approximately 20%, floor area ratio is 5, and transportation network density is 8 km/km2. Optimal distances to universities, city centres, and transportation hubs are around 1 km, 17 km, and 9 km, respectively. Furthermore, significant city-level heterogeneity was observed: most density-related variables consistently have an overall positive association with IPAD, with metropolitan cities (e.g., Hangzhou and Suzhou) exhibiting notably higher optimal values compared to medium and small cities (e.g., Xuancheng and Huzhou). In contrast, the threshold effects of proximity-related variables on IPAD are more complex and diverse. These findings offer empirical support for enhancing innovation in high-density urban environments. Full article

Background/Objectives: Radial artery occlusion (RAO) following hemostasis after coronary procedures is the most common complication, with a highly variable incidence (1–33%). While it is well established that the patent hemostasis technique reduces RAO rates, it remains unclear which device should be preferred. The wide variety of available radial hemostasis devices makes it necessary to identify those associated with a lower incidence of complications. Methods: Literature from 2016 to 2021 was reviewed through a systematic search in PubMed, CINAHL, Cochrane, and Embase databases. Only randomized controlled trials (RCTs) involving adult patients undergoing percutaneous transradial coronary procedures were included. Devices considered included pneumatic compression devices, manual compression, elastic bandages, and hemostatic dressings. The review process followed PRISMA guidelines. Two random-effects frequentist network meta-analyses were conducted to compare the effects of 16 and 9 radial hemostasis devices on RAO incidence at 24 h and 30 days after the procedure. Results: A total of 17 RCTs were included. The network meta-analysis (NMA) showed a protective effect at the 24 h endpoint for both double-balloon devices and pneumatic compression devices adjusted to mean arterial pressure. At the 30-day endpoint, significant differences were observed among pneumatic compression, chitosan-based PADs, mechanical compression devices, and adjustable elastic bandages. Conclusions: Although some treatments with specific devices significantly differ from the reference treatment, the limited availability of data to assess RAO at 30 days and a certain heterogeneity between devices indicate the need for further investigation. This study employs text mining techniques to conduct a systematic quantitative analysis of cybersecurity-related scientific publications and technological research. It aims to break through the limitations of traditional unidirectional evolutionary research, reveal the knowledge evolution rules between scientific theories and technical practices in this field, and provide valuable references and decision-making support for optimizing the collaborative innovation ecosystem. Firstly, we took academic papers and patent research on cybersecurity from 2005 to 2024 as the research objects and divided them into ten stages according to the time series. Subsequently, we identified scientific and technological topics and formed science–technology topics to assess their similarity. Then, we selected 3040 pairs of collaborative topic pairs and categorized them into three distinct groups: weak, moderate, and strong correlation. Finally, we constructed a science–technology topic association evolution atlas and analyzed the types of evolutionary pathways of topic associations and their mechanisms of action accordingly. The results demonstrate five evolutionary patterns in science–technology topic associations: division, merging, inheritance, co-occurrence, and independent development. Additionally, the science–technology topics demonstrate a high degree of collaboration, exhibiting a collaborative effect of “initial accumulation–fluctuating differentiation–deep collaboration”. Meanwhile, the correlation evolution of strongly related science–technology topics presents a symmetrical effect of “technology–science–technology” and “science–technology/technology–science”. Objective: Endoscopic ultrasound-guided gallbladder drainage (EUS-GBD) has emerged as a promising alternative for biliary decompression in patients with malignant distal biliary obstruction (MDBO), used either as a first-line approach or after other interventions have failed. This study aimed to evaluate the aggregated efficacy and safety of EUS-GBD in this patient population. Methods: A comprehensive literature search was carried out across PubMed/Medline, Embase, and Cochrane databases up to 9 January 2024, to identify studies reporting outcomes of EUS-GBD in MDBO cases. The primary endpoint assessed was clinical success, while secondary endpoints included technical success and the incidence of adverse events (AEs). Pooled outcomes were calculated using a random-effects model and presented with 95% confidence intervals (CIs). Results: Seven studies encompassing a total of 193 patients were included in the analysis. The combined clinical success rate for EUS-GBD was 88.1% [95% CI: 78.9–94.9%], while the technical success rate was 99.2% [95% CI: 97.5–100%]. The overall AE rate was 13.7% [95% CI: 9.3–18.8%], with the majority being mild to moderate in severity; no fatal complications were reported. Subgroup analyses indicated that use of smaller lumen-apposing metal stents (LAMS) (<15 mm) was associated with slightly higher clinical success (93.3% [95% CI: 72.4–99.9%]) compared to larger stents (≥15 mm) (87.1% [95% CI: 78.8–93.5%]), and a marginally lower rate of AEs (12.3% [95% CI: 6.4–19.7%] vs. 15.2% [95% CI: 6.5–26.6%]). Conclusions: EUS-GBD demonstrates excellent technical performance, high clinical efficacy, and a manageable safety profile in patients with MDBO and a patent cystic duct. Full article

Background/Objectives: Prenatal adverse events may influence the development of complications of prematurity, including patent ductus arteriosus (PDA). We conducted a systematic review and Bayesian model-averaged (BMA) meta-analysis of observational studies exploring the association between hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDP) and the risk of PDA in preterm infants. Methods: PubMed/Medline and Embase databases were searched. We used BMA analysis to calculate Bayes factors (BFs). The BF10 is the ratio of the probability of the data under the alternative hypothesis (H1, presence of association) over the probability of the data under the null hypothesis (H0, absence of association). Results: We included 41 studies (58,004 infants). BMA analysis showed moderate evidence in favour of H0 for the association between HDP and any PDA (BF10 = 0.20) as well as for the association between HDP and hemodynamically significant PDA (BF10 = 0.27). Subgroup analyses based on the subtype of HDP showed that the moderate evidence in favour of H0 was only conclusive (i.e., BF10 < 0.33) for the associations of any PDA with preeclampsia (BF10 = 0.30) and hemodynamically significant PDA with preeclampsia (BF10 = 0.17). Conclusions: The currently available evidence suggests a lack of association between HDP and the risk of developing PDA. Full article

Background/Objectives: Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) is a significant cause of childhood blindness, particularly among preterm infants. Patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) is commonly observed in neonates and may contribute to the development of ROP through increased oxygen delivery to the retina. However, the association between PDA and the severity of ROP remains unclear. This study aims to evaluate the relationship between PDA and the development of treatment-requiring ROP in preterm infants. Methods: A retrospective cohort study was conducted on preterm infants born between 2014 and 2020 at Izmir Private Medical Park Hospital. Infants with a birth weight of less than 2000 g and a gestational age of ≤36 + 6 weeks were included. Data on demographics, prematurity-related complications, PDA status, ROP severity, and treatment requirements were collected. Statistical analysis was performed using univariate and multivariate logistic regression models to identify predictors of ROP. Results: Of 516 infants, 328 did not have PDA, 117 had spontaneous PDA closure, and 71 required PDA treatment. Neonates requiring PDA treatment had significantly lower gestational age and birth weight, as well as longer respiratory support duration. PDA presence was associated with increased ROP incidence in univariate analysis (p < 0.001); however, it was not an independent predictor of treatment-requiring ROP in multivariate models. Significant predictors for treatment-requiring ROP included longer non-invasive ventilation duration (OR = 1.029) and total respiratory support (OR = 1.009). Conclusions: The findings of this study highlight the central role of respiratory morbidity in ROP pathogenesis and suggest that optimal respiratory management may be more critical for ROP prevention than PDA treatment alone. Genome-editing technology has advanced significantly since the 2020 Nobel Prize in Chemistry was awarded for the development of clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats (CRISPR) and CRISPR-associated protein 9 (Cas9). While CRISPR–Cas9 has become widely used in academic research, its social implementation has lagged due to unresolved patent disputes and slower progress in gene function analysis. To address this, new approaches bypassing direct gene function analysis are needed, with bioinformatics and next-generation sequencing (NGS) playing crucial roles. NGS is essential for sequencing the genome of target species, but challenges such as data quality, genome heterogeneity, ploidy, and small individual sizes persist. Despite these issues, advancements in sequencing technologies, like PacBio high-fidelity (HiFi) long reads and high-throughput chromosome conformation capture (Hi-C), have improved genome sequencing. Bioinformatics contributes to genome editing through off-target prediction and target gene selection, both of which require accurate genome sequence information. In this review, I will give updates on the development of genome editing and bioinformatics technologies with a focus on the rapid progress in genome sequencing. Full article

This study aimed to shorten firefighter search times during indoor fires, allowing more people to be rescued, by enhancing disaster-prevention capabilities using building technologies. In indoor fires, fatalities are often caused by the failure of firefighters to rescue individuals in a timely manner. The question of how to effectively increase the probability of survival while waiting for rescue behind closed doors warrants in-depth research and analysis. Therefore, to ensure that people live in safe environments, there is an urgent need to develop a building door panel material with an emergency call function to prevent such incidents from occurring. Utilizing the PRISMA method, we conducted a comprehensive review of the existing literature to identify the key issues and limitations associated with the current search-and-rescue techniques. Subsequently, the identified primary factors were analyzed using the TRIZ method to determine the key factors that influence the success of rescuing trapped individuals, and a notification system was designed to address this issue. Based on the premise that it is advisable to wait for rescue during a fire, we utilized a smartphone to scan a QR code and transmit the exact location information to the fire department. Through extensive participation and feedback from firefighters, we developed a rescue notification door panel and obtained a patent for it. This system can significantly reduce the time required for search-and-rescue operations in fire incidents. The experimental results show a reduction of one-third in search times. Full article

Technological innovation is paramount for accelerating climate change mitigation efforts within sectors characterized by low technological diffusion. This study examines the role of self-citation and technological novelty on the technological impact of wind energy technologies (2010–2023). Using USPTO patent data and a negative binomial regression analysis, the results reveal an inverse relationship between self-citation and technological impact and a positive relationship between technological originality and technological impact. Specifically, a 1% increase in the self-citation rate is associated with an 11.2% decrease in technological impact, while a 1% increase in technological originality leads to a 5.2% increase in technological impact. These findings highlight the need for policies that incentivize technological diversity and foster knowledge exchange and collaboration among firms to enhance innovation diffusion. By providing insights into firms’ innovation strategies, this study offers practical guidance for policymakers aiming to accelerate renewable energy adoption and achieve long-term sustainability goals. The success of a cluster depends on the interplay between intra- and inter-regional collaboration, while empirical research on the mechanisms through which intra- and inter-regional collaborations trigger cluster growth is rarely focused. Based on the local buzz–global pipelines framework and incorporating an evolutionary perspective, we explore how intra- and inter-regional innovation networks can be integrated to drive the growth of emerging industries. We draw on Zhangjiang, China’s most advanced AI industry cluster, using social network analysis and qualitative methods, combining patent data with semi-structured interviews. The results indicate that with the return of multinational corporations and the limitation of Western technology, universities have become the primary source of AI innovation in Zhangjiang. The government has played a pivotal role in propelling the accelerated growth of China’s AI industry, particularly through the backing of pioneering AI private enterprises and the calibration of the potential inefficiencies associated with a state-led model with the dynamism of market forces. The ‘Buzz-and-pipeline’ dynamics in the AI innovation network are shaped by four processes: local networking, market demand, resource integration, and policy synergy. This underscores the intricate interconnections between the national and local scales in AI innovation networks. Full article

The water channel AQP3 is an aquaglyceroporin expressed in villus epithelial cells, and it plays a role in water transport across human colonic surface cells. Beyond water, AQP3 can mediate glycerol and H2O2 transport. Abnormal expression and function of AQP3 have been found in various diseases often characterized by altered cell growth and proliferation. Here, the beneficial effects of MOMAST® have been evaluated. MOMAST® is an antioxidant-patented natural phenolic complex obtained from olive wastewater (OWW) of the Coratina cultivar. Treatment of human colon HCT8 cells with MOMAST® reduced cell viability. Confocal studies and Western Blotting analysis demonstrated that treatment with MOMAST® significantly decreased the staining and the expression of AQP3. Importantly, functional studies revealed that the reduction of AQP3 abundance correlates with a significant decrease in glycerol and H2O2 uptake. Indeed, the H2O2 transport was partially but significantly reduced in the presence of MOMAST® or DFP00173, a selective inhibitor of AQP3. In addition, the MOMAST®-induced AQP3 decrease was associated with reduced epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT)-related proteins such as vimentin and β-catenin. Together, these findings propose MOMAST® as a potential adjuvant in colon diseases associated with abnormal cell growth by targeting AQP3. Full article
