A novel flame retardant phosphorus-containing organozinc complex (Zn-PDH) was prepared using zinc and iron as the metal center and 4-aminopyridine, with low steric hindrance, as the organic ligand, then using phosphazene to modify the organometallic complex (Zn-4APD). The flame retardant properties and mechanism of Zn-PDH/Tris-(3-DOPO-1-propyl)-triazinetrione (TAD) in epoxy resin (EP) were investigated. Flame inhibition behavior was studied by the vertical combustion test (UL94), while limiting oxygen index (LOI) measurement and flame retardant properties were studied by the cone calorimeter test (CONE). The flame retardant modes of action were explored by using the thermogravimetry–Fourier transform infrared (TG-FTIR) test, X-ray photoelectron spectrometer (XPS), and Raman spectroscopy (LRS). When TAD and Zn-PDH were added to the epoxy resin in the ratio of 3:1, the system achieved a balance between the gas-phase and condense-phase actions of the flame retardant effects, and the 3%TAD/1%Zn-PDH/EP composite system achieved not only good flame inhibition but also obtained good smoke and heat suppression performance, showing a comprehensive flame retardant performance. The gas phase and Zn-PDH mostly promoted charring with a barrier and protective effect in the condensed phase. As for the mechanism, TAD released the phosphorus-containing radicals and phenoxy radicals during decomposition and mainly exerted a gas-phase quenching effect. While in the condense phase, Zn-PDH promoted the decomposition of the polymer matrix to produce more aromatic structures and rapidly formed a complete and dense carbon layer rich in P-O-C crosslinked structures at high temperatures. Meanwhile, more N entered the gas phase in the form of inert gas, which diluted the concentration of the combustible fuel and helped to inhibit the combustion reaction. Full article

Catalyst-free multicomponent reactions of mixed alkylzinc reagents with Michael acceptors and aldehydes, ketones or activated imines are described. Primary, secondary and tertiary alkylzinc reagents, pre-generated in acetonitrile from the corresponding iodoalkanes, were used in the process, leading to the very efficient formation of a variety of β-hydroxycarbonyl compounds. The imines showed more contrasting results, due to the direct addition of the organozinc compound to the C=N bond. Mechanistic assays involving TEMPO account for a polar instead of a radical character of the reaction. Full article

Phenomena related to asymmetric amplification are considered to be key to understanding the emergence of homochirality in life. In asymmetric catalysis, theoretical and experimental models have been studied to understand such chiral amplification, in particular based on non-linear effects. Three decades after the theoretical demonstration that a chiral catalyst, when not enantiopure, could be more enantioselective than its enantiopure counterpart, we show here a new experimental example of nonlinear hyperpositive effect. We report here our investigations in the enantioselective zinc-catalyzed alkylation of benzaldehyde with N-pyrrolidinyl norephedrine as partially resolved chiral ligand, which shows a significant hyperpositive non-linear effect. A study of the underlying mechanism was conducted, which allows us to confirm a mechanism that implies a monomeric and a dimeric complex both catalyzing the reaction at a steady state and giving different enantioselectivities. A series of coumarin derivatives and isosteres were synthesized from the reaction of triflic intermediates with phenylboronic acids, terminal alkynes, and organozinc compounds through palladium-catalyzed cross-coupling reactions. The in vitro cytotoxic effect of the compounds was evaluated against two non-small cell lung carcinoma (NSCLC) cell lines (A-549 and H2170) and a normal cell line (NIH-3T3) using cisplatin as a reference drug. Additionally, the effects of the most promising coumarin derivative (9f) in reversing the epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT) in IL-1β-stimulated A549 cells and in inhibiting the EMT-associated migratory ability in A549 cells were also evaluated. 9f had the greatest cytotoxic effect (CC50 = 7.1 ± 0.8 and 3.3 ± 0.5 μM, respectively against A549 and H2170 cells) and CC50 value of 25.8 µM for NIH-3T3 cells. 9f inhibited the IL-1β-induced EMT in epithelial cells by inhibiting the F-actin reorganization, attenuating changes in the actin cytoskeleton reorganization, and downregulating vimentin in A549 cells stimulated by IL-1β. Treatment of A549 cells with 9f at 7 µM for 24 h significantly reduced the migration of IL-1β-stimulated cells, which is a phenomenon confirmed by qualitative assessment of the wound closure. Taken together, our findings suggest that coumarin derivatives, especially compound 9f, may become a promising candidate for lung cancer therapy, especially in lung cancer promoted by NSCLC cell lines. Introduction of photoactive building blocks into mixed-ligand coordination polymers appears to be a promising way to produce new advanced luminescent materials. However, rational design and self-assembly of the multi-component supramolecular systems is challenging from both a conceptual and synthetic perspective. Here, we report exploratory studies that investigate the potential of [Zn(q)2]2[tBuZn(OH)]2 complex (q = deprotonated 8-hydroxyquinoline) as an organozinc precursor as well as a mixed-ligand synthetic strategy for the preparation of new luminescent coordination polymers (CPs). As a result we present three new 2D mixed-ligand Zn(II)-quinolinate coordination polymers which are based on various zinc quinolinate secondary building units interconnected by two different organic linker types, i.e., deprotonated 4,4′-oxybisbenzoic acid (H2obc) as a flexible dicarboxylate linker and/or selected bipyridines (bipy). Remarkably, using the title organozinc precursors in a combination with H2obc and 4,4′-bipyridine, a novel molecular zinc quinolinate building unit, [Zn4(q)6(bipy)2(obc)2], was obtained which self-assembled into a chain-type hydrogen-bonded network. The application of the organometallic precursor allowed for its direct reaction with the selected ligands at ambient temperature, avoiding the use of both solvothermal conditions and additional base reagents. In turn, the reaction involving Zn(NO3)2, as a classical inorganic precursor, in a combination with H2obc and bipy led to a novel 1D coordination polymer [Zn2(q)2(NO3)2(bipy)]. While the presence of H2obc was essential for the formation of this coordination polymer, this ditopic linker was not incorporated into the isolated product, which indicates its templating behavior. The reported compounds were characterized by single-crystal and powder X-ray diffraction, elemental analysis as well as UV-Vis and photoluminescence spectroscopy. Full article

The direct reaction of the highly sterically demanding acetamidinate-based NNN′-scorpionate protioligand Hphbptamd [Hphbptamd = N,N′-di-p-tolylbis(3,5-di-tertbutylpyrazole-1-yl)acetamidine] with one equiv. of ZnMe2 proceeds in high yield to the mononuclear alkyl zinc complex [ZnMe(κ3-phbptamd)] (1). Alternatively, the treatment of the corresponding lithium precursor [Li(phbptamd)(THF)] with ZnCl2 yielded the halide complex [ZnCl(κ3-phbptamd)] (2). The X-ray crystal structure of 1 confirmed unambiguously a mononuclear entity in these complexes, with the zinc centre arranged with a pseudotetrahedral environment and the scorpionate ligand in a κ3-coordination mode. Interestingly, the inexpensive, low-toxic and easily prepared complexes 1 and 2 resulted in highly efficient catalysts for the ring-opening polymerisation of lactides, a sustainable bio-resourced process industrially demanded. Thus, complex 1 behaved as a single-component robust initiator for the living and immortal ROP of rac-lactide under very mild conditions after a few hours, reaching a TOF value up to 5520 h−1 under bulk conditions. Preliminary kinetic studies revealed apparent zero-order dependence on monomer concentration in the absence of a cocatalyst. The PLA materials produced exhibited narrow dispersity values, good agreement between the experimental Mn values and monomer/benzyl alcohol ratios, as well as enhanced levels of heteroselectivity, reaching Ps values up to 0.74. The simple and efficient method was developed for the one-pot synthesis of B-substituted aryl derivatives of ortho-carborane with functional groups sensitive to organolithium and organomagnesium reagents using 9-iodo-ortho-carborane and generated in situ organozinc compounds. The method proposed was used to prepare a series of 9-aryl-ortho-carboranes, including those containing nitrile and ester groups, 9-RC6H4-1,2-C2B10H11 (R = p-Me, p-NMe2, p-OCH2OMe, o-OMe, p-OMe, o-CN, p-CN, o-COOEt, m-COOEt, and p-COOEt). It was demonstrated that the same approach can be used for synthesis of diaryl derivatives of ortho-carborane 9,12-(RC6H4)2-1,2-C2B10H10 (R = H, p-Me). Crystalline ZnO-ROH and ZnO-OR (R = Me, Et, iPr, nBu) nanoparticles (NPs) have been successfully synthesized by the thermal decomposition of in-situ-formed organozinc complexes Zn(OR)2 deriving from the reaction of Zn[N(SiMe3)2]2 with ROH and of the freshly prepared Zn(OR)2 under an identical condition, respectively. With increasing carbon chain length of alkyl alcohol, the thermal decomposition temperature and dispersibility of in-situ-formed intermediate zinc alkoxides in oleylamine markedly influenced the particle sizes of ZnO-ROH and its shape (sphere, plate-like aggregations), while a strong diffraction peak-broadening effect is observed with decreasing particle size. For ZnO-OR NPs, different particle sizes and various morphologies (hollow sphere or cuboid-like rod, solid sphere) are also observed. As a comparison, the calcination of the fresh-prepared Zn(OR)2 generated ZnO-R NPs possessing the particle sizes of 5.4~34.1 nm. All crystalline ZnO nanoparticles are characterized using X-ray diffraction analysis, electron microscopy and solid-state 1H and 13C nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. The size effect caused by confinement of electrons’ movement and the defect centres caused by unpaired electrons on oxygen vacancies or ionized impurity heteroatoms in the crystal lattices are monitored by UV-visible spectroscopy, electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and photoluminescent (PL) spectroscopy, respectively. Based on the types of defects determined by EPR signals and correspondingly defect-induced probably appeared PL peak position compared to actual obtained PL spectra, we find that it is difficult to establish a direct relationship between defect types and PL peak position, revealing the complication of the formation of defect types and photoluminescence properties. A practical synthetic route for the preparation of 2-pyridyl and 3-pyridyl derivatives has been accomplished by utilizing a simple coupling reaction of stable 2-pyridylzinc bromides and 3-pyridylzinc bromides. The organozincs used in this study were easily prepared via the direct insertion of active zinc into the corresponding bromopyridines. The subsequent coupling reactions with a variety of different electrophiles have afforded the corresponding coupling products. Using highly active manganese, a variety of Grignard-type organomanganese reagents have been obtained.
