A one-dimensional Thue–Morse graphene photonic crystal (1D TMGPC) composed of alternating identical dielectric layers and graphene sheets is proposed, in which two distinct graphene chemical potentials are arranged according to a Thue–Morse quasi-periodic sequence. Using the transfer matrix method, we demonstrate that this structure effectively modulates terahertz waves and generates multiple abundant photonic bandgaps at both 20 K and 300 K. Notably, a novel splitting of low-frequency bandgaps produces two additional omnidirectional and polarization-insensitive bandgaps centered at approximately 1.45 THz and 1.95 THz. By analyzing the dispersion relations, reflection phase, photonic density of states, and electric field distributions, the boundary-driven modulation mechanism associated with the quasi-periodic chemical potential is elucidated. Furthermore, the proposed structure exhibits excellent multi-dimensional tunability. The bandgap properties can be dynamically tuned via the electrical control of graphene chemical potentials without altering the physical geometry. Structural tailoring provides an additional degree of freedom, as increasing the Thue–Morse sequence order induces passband splitting. Additionally, increasing the number of repeating periods yields comb-like multi-channel narrowband filtering responses. At a cryogenic temperature of 20 K, two distinct multi-channel narrowband comb filtering responses appear in the frequency ranges of 1.20–1.33 THz and 4.10–4.80 THz, with a minimum full width at half maximum (FWHM) of 1.10 GHz. At a room temperature of 300 K, the higher-frequency comb filtering response remains in the range of 4.10–4.80 THz, with a minimum FWHM of 5.70 GHz. Moreover, we evaluate the performance and stability of the structure when employed as filters and electro-optic switches, thereby providing useful insights for terahertz applications. With its simple geometry, abundant bandgaps, and flexible electro-structural tunability, the proposed 1D TMGPC is highly promising for broadband and electrically tunable terahertz devices. This study addresses the issue of cross-interference that occurs when locked continuous light and signal photons are collinear during interferometer measurements. To tackle this, a temperature-controlled Fabry–Pérot cavity filter with a heterogeneous cascaded structure is proposed and applied. The system consists of six filtering stages, created by designing Fabry–Pérot cavities of three different lengths, each used twice (to match optical frequencies), along with temperature control settings. By applying differentiated linewidth regulation, the approach effectively suppresses interference from locked light while significantly enhancing the signal-to-noise ratio in photon detection. This method overcomes the challenge of interference from same-frequency noise photons in atomic ensemble-entangled sources, achieving a noise–photon extinction ratio on the order of 106 and surpassing the frequency resolution limit of a single filter. Experimental results demonstrate that the system reduces the noise floor in the detection optical path to below 10−16, while maintaining a photon transmission efficiency above 53% for the signal. This technology effectively addresses key challenges in noise suppression and photon state fidelity optimization in optical fiber quantum communication, offering a scalable frequency–photon noise filtering solution for long-distance quantum communication. Furthermore, its multi-parameter cooperative filtering mechanism holds broad potential applications in areas such as quantum storage and optical frequency combs. Full article

Chirped radio-frequency signals are essential waveforms in radar systems. To enhance resolution and improve the signal-to-noise ratio through higher energy transmission, chirps with high time–bandwidth products are highly desirable. Photonic technologies, with their ability to handle broad electrical bandwidths, have been widely employed in the generation, filtering, processing, and detection of broadband electrical waveforms. In this work, we propose a photonics-based large-TBWP RF chirp generator utilizing dual optical frequency combs with a small difference in the repetition rate. By employing dispersion modules for frequency-to-time mapping, we convert the spectral interferometric patterns into a temporal RF sinusoidal carrier signal whose frequency is swept through the optical shot-to-shot delay. We derive analytical expressions to quantify the system’s performance under various design parameters, including the comb repetition rate and its offset, the second-order dispersion, the transform-limited optical pulse width, and the photodetector’s bandwidth limitations. We benchmark the expected system performance in terms of RF bandwidth, chirp duration, chirp rate, frequency step size, and TBWP. Using realistic dual-comb source parameters, we demonstrate the feasibility of generating RF chirps with a duration of 284.44 μs and a bandwidth of 234.05 GHz, corresponding to a TBWP of 3.3×107. In recent years, micro-combs, due to their compact structure and high efficiency, have proven to be a practical solution for optical sources. In this paper, an approach to flexibly modulating micro-combs is proposed, and a simulation platform based on Si3N4 micro-combs with highly integrated, tunable, and reconfigurable features is built. By means of the Lugiato–Lefever equation model, the dynamic evolution process of micro-combs is analyzed, and a micro-ring resonator is designed with a free spectral range of 7.24 nm, an effective mode area of 1.0829µm2, and coherent comb lines spanning over 125 THz. Cascaded silicon nitride micro-ring filters are utilized to obtain reconfigurable modulation effects for Kerr-frequency micro-combs. Due to the significance of flexibly controlled optical sources with high-repetition rates and multiple channels for system-on-chip, our proposal has potential in photonic integrated circuit systems, such as high-density photonic computing and large-capacity optical communications, in the future. A novel photonics-assisted technique for generating reconfigurable frequency hopping (FH) signals is proposed and demonstrated through optical comb filtering (OCF). The arithmetic progression of frequency difference between OCF passbands and optical frequency comb lines is exploited to enable wavelength selection controlled by an intermediate frequency signal, with ultra-wideband FH signals subsequently being generated through optical heterodyning. Comprehensive theoretical and numerical investigations are conducted, demonstrating the successful generation of diverse FH waveforms including 5-, 10-, and 25-level stepped frequency signals, Costas-coded patterns, as well as complex wideband signals such as 30 GHz linear frequency modulated and 24 GHz sinusoidal chirped waveforms. Critical system considerations including laser frequency stability, FH speed, and parameter optimization are examined. Wide tunable bandwidth exceeding 30 GHz, good stability, and inherent compatibility with photonic integration is achieved, showing significant potential for advanced applications in cognitive radio and modern radar systems where high-performance frequency-agile signal generation is required. In this paper, a scheme for generating high-quality tunable microwave-frequency combs (MFCs) is proposed. The proposed scheme is based on an initially non-flat MFC generated by a directly modulated laser operating in gain-switching status. Filtering operations are used to increase the flatness of the MFC. Concretely, by employing an optical bandpass filter and a two-tap negative-coefficient microwave photonic filter, the flatness of the MFC is significantly optimized. In the experiment, MFCs with adjustable comb spacing from 0.5 GHz to 1.6 GHz and bandwidths ranging from 0 to 26.5 GHz are generated. The flatness is better than ±2.5 dB for the MFC. The proposed scheme provides a simple, efficient, and high-performance solution for generating MFCs, making it a promising candidate for various applications requiring high-quality MFC sources. This work presents a cost-effective optical frequency comb generator (CEOFCG) solution for generating multiple, equally spaced carriers in wavelength-division-multiplexing coherent optical fiber communication systems (WDM-COFCS). It enables the replacement of multiple laser sources with a single continuous-wave laser, eliminating the need for additional amplification and filtering setups. The CEOFCG provides stable multicarrier spacing, broad phase coherence, and compatibility with advanced modulation formats, enhancing the performance of WDM-COFCS. Digital signal processing (DSP) techniques, including digital filtering, detection, and impairment compensation, contribute to high transmission and spectral efficiency (SE). The results demonstrate the potential of CEOFCG in achieving cost reduction, complexity reduction, high SE, and optimal utilization of optical fiber bandwidth, particularly in higher-order QAM-based COFCS. We propose and demonstrate a tunable femtosecond electro-optic optical frequency comb by shaping a continuous-wave seed laser in an all-fiber configuration. The seed laser, operating at 1.5 μm, is first cascade-phase-modulated and subsequently de-chirped to generate low-contrast pulses of approximately 8 ps at a repetition rate of 5.95 GHz. These pulses are then refined into clean, high-quality picosecond pulses using a Mamyshev regenerator. The generated source is further amplified using an erbium–ytterbium-doped fiber amplifier operating in a highly nonlinear regime, yielding output pulses compressed to around 470 fs. Tunable continuously across a 5.7~6 GHz range with a 1 MHz resolution, the picosecond pulses undergo nonlinear propagation in the final amplification stage, leading to output pulses that can be further compressed to a few hundred femtoseconds. By using a tunable bandpass filter, the center wavelength and spectral bandwidth can be flexibly tuned. This system eliminates the need for mode-locked cavities, simplifying conventional ultrafast electro-optic combs by relying solely on phase modulation, while delivering femtosecond pulses at multiple-gigahertz repetition rates. Terahertz is one of the most promising technologies for high-speed communication and large-scale data transmission. As a classical optical component, ring resonators are extensively utilized in the design of band-pass and frequency-selective devices across various wavebands, owing to their unique characteristics, including optical comb generation, compactness, and low manufacturing cost. While substantial progress has been made in the study of ring resonators, their application in terahertz surface wave systems remains less than fully optimized. This paper presents several spoof surface plasmon polariton-based devices, which were realized using ring resonators at terahertz frequencies. The influence of both the radius of the ring resonator and the width of the waveguide coupling gap on the coupling coefficient are investigated. The band-stop filters based on the cascaded ring resonator exhibit a 0.005 THz broader frequency bandwidth compared to the single-ring resonator filter and achieve a minimum stopband attenuation of 28 dB. The add–drop multiplexers based on the asymmetric ring resonator enable selective surface wave outputs at different ports by rotating the ring resonator. The devices designed in this study offer valuable insights for the development of on-chip terahertz components. Full article

Metasurfaces are opening promising flexibilities to reshape the wavefront of electromagnetic waves. Notable optical phenomena are observed with the tailored surface plasmon, which is excited by metallic components in the visible spectrum. However, metamaterial or metasurface devices utilizing metallic materials encounter the challenge of low transmission efficiency, particularly within the visible spectrum. This study proposes a multilayer design strategy to enhance their transmission efficiency. By incorporating additional metal layers for improvements in the transmission efficiency and dielectric layers as spacers, cavities are formed along the propagation direction, enabling the modulation of transmittance and reflection through a process mimicking destructive interference. An analytical model simplified with the assumption of deep-subwavelength-thick metal layers is proposed to predict the structural parameters with optimized transmittance. Numerical studies employing the rigorous coupled wave analysis method confirmed that the additional metal layers significantly improve the transmittance. The introduction of the extra metal and dielectric layers enhances the transmission efficiency in specific spectral regions, maintaining a controllable passband and transmittance. The results indicate that the precise control over the layers’ thicknesses facilitates the modulation of peak-to-valley ratios and the creation of comb-like filters, which can be further refined through controlled random variation in the thickness. Furthermore, when the thickness of the silver layer followed an arithmetic sequence, a multilayer structure with a transmittance of approximately 80% covering the entire visible spectrum could be achieved. Significantly, the polarization extinction ratio and the phase delay of the incident beams could still be modulated by adjusting the geometrical structure and parameters of the multilayer metamaterial for diversified functionalities. Tilted fibre Bragg gratings are optical fibre structures used as sensors of various physical quantities. Their unique measurement capabilities result from the high complexity of the optical spectrum consisting of several dozen cladding mode resonances. TFBG spectra demodulation methods generate signal features that highlight changes in the spectrum due to changes in the interacting quantities. Such methods should enable the distinction between two slightly different values of the measured quantity. The paper presents an effective method of processing the TFBG spectrum for use in measuring the refractive index of liquids. The use of Gabor and log-Gabor filters and their adaptive version eliminates the problem of discontinuity in determining the SRI value related to the existence of the cladding mode comb. The Gabor filters used make visible the shifting and fading of spectral features related to the decrease in the intensity of leaking modes. Subsequent modifications of the proposed algorithm led to an increase in the quality factor of the processed spectrum. Full article

Combined in-band full duplex-multiple input multiple output (IBFD–MIMO) technology can significantly improve spectrum efficiency and data throughput, and has broad application prospects in communications, radar, the Internet of Things (IoT), and other fields. Targeting the self-interference (SI) issue in microwave photonic-based IBFD–MIMO communication systems, a microwave photonic self-interference cancellation (SIC) method applied to the narrowband 2 × 2 IBFD–MIMO communication system was proposed, simulated, and analyzed. An interleaver was used to construct a polarization multiplexing dual optical frequency comb with a frequency shifting effect, generating a dual-channel reference interference signal. The programmable spectrum processor was employed for filtering, attenuation, and phase-shifting operations, ensuring amplitude and phase matching to eliminate the two self-interference (SI) signals. The simulation results show that the single-frequency SIC depth exceeds 45.8 dB, and the narrowband SIC depth under 30 MHz bandwidth exceeds 32.7 dB. After SIC, the desired signal, employing a 4QAM modulation format, can be demodulated with an error vector magnitude (EVM) as low as 4.7%. An interference filter is designed by cascading two Mach-Zehnder interferometers (MZIs), which is then utilized in the construction of a wavelength interval adjustable dual-wavelength Erbium-doped fiber laser (EDFL). Each MZI consists of two 3 dB optical couplers (OCs) connected in series. The input light is split into two arms at the first OC and recombined at the second OC. The first MZI (MZI 1) has a smaller free spectral range (FSR) and is used for selecting the output wavelength of the laser. The second MZI (MZI 2) has a larger FSR and forms an envelope structure on the comb-like spectrum of MZI 1. By adjusting the optical path difference between the two arms of MZI 2, the FSR of the envelope can be changed, thereby altering the interval of the output wavelengths. The implemented filter is inserted into the EDFL to achieve stable dual-wavelength output. By stretching one arm of MZI 2, the interval of the dual-wavelength can be adjusted from 4.64 to 13.94 nm, with the side-mode suppression ratio of over 44 dB for all wavelengths. Full article

Nowadays, broadband and multi-channel radio frequency (RF) processing has been widely used in communication, radar, countermeasure, and other applications. At present, multiple-input and multiple-output (MIMO)-oriented microwave photonic signal processing technology is relatively scarce, so this paper proposes an RF frequency selective switch (FSS) based on multiple phase modulation to intensity modulation (PMIM) conversions. PMIM conversion has been used in narrowband microwave photonic filtering in the past. We extend it to a wideband and arbitrarily reconfigurable RF spectrum processing unit through an optical frequency comb and periodic optical filter. Although we use the incoherent combination of a multi-wavelength light source, we can obtain any frequency response including rectangles only by using all positive tap coefficients. Using an optical wavelength selective switch (WSS), we obtain RF FSS, and the spectral resolution of RF FSS is much better than that of optical WSS, which is improved by more than two orders of magnitude. The above principles, including single-channel reconfigurable filtering and multi-channel RF FSS, are verified by experiments. Our technology provides a stable solution for future RF MIMO signal processing. Full article

Multi-static SARs from LEO orbits allow the single-pass high-resolution imaging and detection of moving targets. A coherent MIMO approach requires the generation of multi-band, thus orthogonal, signals, the fusion of which increases the system resolution. Up to now the synchronization capability of SAR signals of different satellites is critical. Here, we propose the use of photonics to generate, receive and distribute the radar signals in a coherent multi-static SAR constellation. Photonics overcomes issues in the implementation of MIMO SAR, allowing for the flexible generation of multi-band signals and centralized generation in a primary satellite with coherent distribution to all the secondary satellites of the SAR signals over FSO links. The numerical analysis shows the proposed system has a NESZ < −29.6 dB, satisfying the SAR system requirements. An experimental proof of concept based on COTS, for both signal up- and down-conversion, is implemented to demonstrate the system functionality, showing performance similar to the simulations. The implementation of the proposed systems with integrated technologies could reduce the system SWaP and increase robustness to vibrations. A design based on the consolidated SOI platform with the transfer printing-based hybrid integration of InP semiconductor optical amplifiers is proposed. The amplifiers compensate for the losses of the passive SOI waveguides, decreasing the overall conversion loss. The polarization multiplexing of the modulated and unmodulated combs to be sent from (to) the primary to (from) the secondary satellite over the FSO links avoids complex space-consuming optical filters requiring several control signals.
