Climate change poses a threat to global rice production by increasing the frequency and intensity of extreme weather events. The widespread cultivation of genetically uniform modern varieties has narrowed the genetic base of rice, increasing its vulnerability to these increased pressures. Rice landraces are traditional rice varieties that have been cultivated by farming communities for centuries and are considered crucial resources of genetic diversity. These landraces are adapted to a wide range of agro-ecological environments and exhibit valuable traits that provide tolerance to various biotic stresses, including drought, salinity, nutrient-deficient soils, and the increasing severity of climate-related temperature extremes. In addition, many landraces possess diverse alleles associated with resistance to biotic stresses, including pests and diseases. In addition, rice landraces exhibit great grain quality characters including high levels of essential amino acids, antioxidants, flavonoids, vitamins, and micronutrients. Hence, their preservation is vital for maintaining agricultural biodiversity and enhancing nutritional security, especially in vulnerable and resource-limited regions. However, rice landraces are increasingly threatened by genetic erosion due to widespread adoption of modern high-yielding varieties, habitat loss, and changing farming practices. This review discusses the roles of rice landraces in developing resilient and climate-smart rice cultivars. Moreover, the Pantiange Heigu landrace, cultivated at one of the highest altitudes globally in Yunnan Province, China, has been used as a case study for integrated conservation by demonstrating the successful combination of in situ and ex situ strategies, community engagement, policy support, and value-added development to sustainably preserve genetic diversity under challenging environmental and socio-economic challenges. Finally, this study explores the importance of employing advanced genomic technologies with supportive policies and economic encouragements to enhance conservation and sustainable development of rice landraces as a strategic imperative for global food security. By preserving and enhancing the utilization of rice landraces, the agricultural community can strengthen the genetic base of rice, improve crop resilience, and contribute substantially to global food security and sustainable agricultural development in the face of environmental and socio-economic challenges. Background/Objectives: Poor dietary habits are a major contributor to non-communicable diseases (NCDs), the leading cause of mortality worldwide. To promote healthier eating, governments and stakeholders have implemented various nutrition policies, including front-of-pack nutrition labeling (FOPNL). The Choices International Foundation (Choices), through its criteria, supports these efforts through its standardized nutrient profiling system (NPS). Originally developed to underpin a positive FOPNL logo, in 2021, the criteria were expanded into a globally oriented five-level profiling system covering 23 basic and 10 discretionary food groups, addressing key nutrients such as trans-fatty acids, saturated fat, sodium, sugar, fiber, and energy. To ensure continued scientific relevance, the Choices criteria are periodically reviewed by an independent International Scientific Committee (ISC). Methods: This paper presents the 2025 revision of the Choices criteria, focusing on priority areas identified through stakeholder consultation and recent scientific developments. Results: Key updates include the introduction of nutrient-based equivalence criteria for plant-based alternatives to meat and dairy, based on protein and selected micronutrient thresholds. Non-sugar sweeteners (NSSs) were newly included as a factor that lowers a product’s health classification and makes it ineligible for a positive FOPNL. Additionally, the industrially produced trans-fatty acid (iTFA) criteria were revised and aligned with the latest World Health Organization (WHO) recommendations, improving both technical feasibility and policy coherence. While options for incorporating whole-grain and micronutrient criteria were explored, these were not included in the current revision. Conclusions: The 2025 update system enhances the scientific rigor, policy alignment, and global applicability of the Choices system. By providing a harmonized and evidence-based tool, it aims to support national policies that foster healthier food environments and, ultimately, improve public health outcomes worldwide. Full article

Background: Tribulus terrestris (Tt) is a popular herbal supplement marketed to enhance fitness performance, despite inconclusive evidence regarding its efficacy and safety. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence of TT use, awareness, and motivations for its use among recreational athletes in Italy, helping to address the lack of empirical data describing who actually uses Tt, for what purposes, and with what behavioral risks. Methods: A cross-sectional anonymous survey was administered between May and October 2024 across Italian gyms and fitness clubs using Microsoft Forms. A total of 696 individuals initiated the questionnaire; after removal of duplicate, incomplete and ineligible entries, 510 responses were analyzed. Two indicators of Tt consumption were assessed: ever use and current use, with the latter designated as the primary outcome. A multivariable logistic regression evaluated predictors of current Tt use, entering sex, age category (18–24, 25–34, 35–44, ≥45 years), and motivation for supplement consumption. Results: Current Tt use was reported by 7.8% of respondents, while 10.5% declared ever using a Tt-containing product. Motivation was the only independent predictor of Tt consumption (p = 0.012). Individuals reporting performance enhancement as their primary motivation were markedly more likely to currently use Tt, compared with those using supplements for other purposes (adjusted OR ≈ 18.5; p = 0.008). Neither sex (p = 0.918) nor age category (p = 0.519) significantly predicted Tt use. Admission of anabolic steroid use was infrequent but was linked to online purchasing from potentially unregulated sources. Conclusions: Tt consumption in fitness settings is driven predominantly by performance-oriented expectations rather than demographic characteristics. The observed discrepancy between consumer beliefs and scientific evidence suggests a pressing need for educational interventions and regulatory vigilance in sports nutrition. Public health policies should focus on improving label literacy, strengthening consumer protection, and countering misinformation within supplement marketing environments. Full article

Background/Objectives: Given the high prevalence of obesity and abdominal obesity in Indigenous adults from Sonora (IAS) and its strong association with diet, this study evaluates the association of dietary inflammatory index (DII) with obesity and abdominal obesity and its indicators, such as body mass index (BMI) and waist circumference (WC), respectively. Methods: This cross-sectional study included data from 559 adults across two Indigenous populations (Seris and Yaquis) collected in two separate studies. Obesity and abdominal obesity were classified according to the definitions established by the World Health Organization and the International Diabetes Federation. The DII was calculated with data from population-specific food frequency questionnaires. Multiple linear regression was used to assess the association between the DII variable (expressed as both numeric and categorical) and BMI and WC, separately; multiple logistic regression was used to evaluate the association between obesity and abdominal obesity. Results: The prevalence of obesity and abdominal obesity was 34.1% and 78.2%, respectively. There was a positive association between the DII and BMI (DII as numeric: β = 0.53, p = 0.001; tertile3 of DII vs. tertile1: β = 1.86, p = 0.001) and WC (DII as numeric: β = 1.15, p = 0.002; tertile3 of DII vs. tertile1: β = 3.81, p = 0.005). Similar results were found for both types of obesity. Conclusions: Higher DII scores were associated with increased obesity indicators (BMI and WC) and a higher risk of obesity and abdominal obesity in IAS. Promoting anti-inflammatory diets represents a feasible approach for preventing non-communicable diseases. Full article

Objective: This study aims to investigate the dietary assessment and trends of preschoolers aged 3 to 5 years in Korea from 2012 to 2021 and to provide basic data for early childhood dietary education and policy development. Methods: Data from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES) from 2012 to 2021 were analyzed for 2510 children in the 3–5 age group. Dietary intake was assessed using a 24 h recall. Intakes of food groups, dishes, and nutrients were calculated, and trends across years were tested using generalized linear models adjusted for gender, age, household income, energy intake, mother’s age, and mother’s education. Results: Over the tenyear period, intakes of carbohydrates, phosphorus, iron, sodium, potassium, carotene, thiamine, niacin, and vitamin C, as well as the carbohydrate energy ratio, showed significant declines. Meanwhile, protein, fat, retinol, and riboflavin increased, as did the protein and fat energy ratios. Fruit intake decreased by approximately 42 g among food group intakes. Analysis of foods contributing to total food intake revealed that milk, white rice, apples, and eggs consistently accounted for a high proportion of total intake in all survey years. Average calcium intake was approximately 100 mg below the estimated average requirement. Conclusions: The results of this study showed that preschoolers exhibit insufficient intake of certain nutrients, such as calcium, and a decrease in fruit intake. Interventions are needed to establish regular meal patterns, promote plant food intake such as fruit, and improve calcium intake. These results provide valuable evidence for designing dietary education programs and dietary guidelines tailored to early childhood. Full article

Availability of irrigation water during growing seasons in the Republic of South Africa (RSA) remains a significant concern. Persistent droughts and unpredictable rainfall patterns attributed to climate change, coupled with an increasing population, have exacerbated irrigation water scarcity. Globally, treated wastewater has been utilised as an irrigation water source; however, despite global advances in the usage of treated wastewater, its suitability for irrigation in RSA remains a contentious issue. Considering this uncertainty, this review article aims to unravel the South African scenario on the suitability of treated wastewater for irrigation purposes and highlights the potential environmental impacts and public health risks. The review synthesised literature in the last two decades (2000–present) using Web of Science, ScienceDirect, ResearchGate, and Google Scholar databases. Findings reveal that treated wastewater can serve as a viable irrigation source in the country, enhancing various soil parameters, including nutritional pool, organic carbon, and fertility status. However, elevated levels of salts, heavy metals, and microplastics in treated wastewater resulting from insufficient treatment of wastewater processes may present significant challenges. These contaminants might induce saline conditions and increase heavy metals and microplastics in soil systems and water bodies, thereby posing a threat to public health and potentially causing ecological risks. Based on the reviewed literature, irrigation with treated wastewater should be implemented on a localised and pilot basis. This review aims to influence policy-making decisions regarding wastewater treatment plant structure and management. Stricter monitoring and compliance policies, revision of irrigation water standards to include emerging contaminants such as microplastics, and intensive investment in wastewater treatment plants in the country are recommended. With improved policies, management, and treatment efficiency, treated wastewater can be a dependable, sustainable, and practical irrigation water source in the country with minimal public health risks. The agri-food supply chain is a relevant contributor to the Italian economy but shows a high incidence of occupational injuries and musculoskeletal disorders, such as lower back pain. Repetitive manual handling and biomechanical overload highlight the need for a prevention-oriented, system-level assessment. This protocol aims to implement a harmonized One Health approach procedure for the multidimensional evaluation of food supply chain workers in real-world settings. The protocol integrates bioelectrical impedance vector analysis (BIVA), nutritional parameters, quality-of-life and psychological measures, and assessments of systemic oxidative stress and systemic serotonin levels. Data from active workers will be compared with those from sedentary individuals. The study will evaluate whether BIVA profiles differ between these groups and examine how the additional indicators contribute to a multidimensional well-being framework. By operationalizing an integrated One Health approach that bridges nutritional, psychological, and biomarker domains, this protocol is designed to guide targeted preventive and educational strategies and inform evidence-based occupational and public health policies across the food supply chain. Ruminant livestock production faces increasing pressure to reduce environmental impacts while maintaining productivity and food security. This comprehensive review examines current strategies and emerging technologies for enhancing environmental sustainability in ruminant systems. The review synthesizes recent advances across four interconnected domains: genetic and genomic approaches for breeding environmentally efficient animals, rumen microbiome manipulation, nutritional strategies for emission reduction, and precision management practices. Specifically, genetic and genomic strategies demonstrate significant potential for long-term sustainability improvements through selective breeding for feed efficiency, methane reduction, and enhanced longevity. Understanding host–microbe interactions and developing targeted interventions have also shown promising effects on optimizing fermentation efficiency and reducing methane production. Key nutritional interventions include dietary optimization strategies that improve feed efficiency, feed additives, and precision feeding systems that minimize nutrient waste. Furthermore, management approaches encompass precision livestock farming technologies including sensor-based monitoring systems, automated feeding platforms, and real-time emission measurement tools that enable data-driven decision making. Integration of these approaches through system-based frameworks offers the greatest potential for achieving substantial environmental improvements while maintaining economic viability. In addition, this review identifies key research gaps including the need for standardized measurement protocols, long-term sustainability assessments, and economic evaluation frameworks. Future directions emphasize the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration, policy support, and technology transfer to accelerate adoption of sustainable practices across diverse production systems. Grassland-based livestock systems across Mexico’s arid and semi-arid belt are increasingly exposed to drought, degrading forage reliability, and soil function. This review synthesizes evidence on native C4 grasses and forage shrubs as complementary building blocks of drought-resilient swards. We searched Web of Science, Scopus, CAB Abstracts and key grey sources (USDA/NRCS Plant Guides, USFS FEIS, Tropical Forages, SNICS) for 1990–2025 studies in English/Spanish. Dominant native grasses (Bouteloua spp., Hilaria belangeri, Digitaria californica, Trichloris crinita, Sporobolus airoides, Panicum hallii) provide high warm-season digestibility and structural cover via C4 physiology, basal/intercalary meristems, and deep/fibrous roots. Forage shrubs (Atriplex canescens, Desmanthus bicornutus, Leucaena leucocephala, Flourensia cernua, Prosopis spp.) bridge the dry-season protein/energy gap and create “resource islands” that enhance infiltration, provided anti-nutritional risks (mimosine/DHP, tannins, salts/oxalates, terpenoids) are managed by dose and diet mixing. We integrate these findings into a Resistance–Recovery–Persistence framework and translate them into operations: (i) site-matching rules for species/layouts, (ii) PLS (pure live seed)-based seed specifications and establishment protocols, (iii) grazing TIDD (timing–intensity–distribution–duration) with a practical monitoring dashboard (CP targets, stubble/cover thresholds, NDVI/SPEI triggers). Remaining bottlenecks are seed quality/availability and uneven extension; policy alignment on PLS procurement and regional seed increase can accelerate adoption. Mixed native grass–shrub systems are a viable, scalable pathway to strengthening drought resilience in Mexican rangelands. Full article

Food loss and waste (FLW) is a chronic problem across food systems worldwide, with meat being one of the most resource-intensive and perishable categories. The perishable character of meat, combined with complex cold chain requirements and consumer behavior, makes the sector particularly sensitive to inefficiencies and loss across all stages from production to consumption. This review synthesizes the latest advancements in new preservation technologies and supply chain efficiency strategies to minimize meat wastage and also outlines current challenges and future directions. New preservation technologies, such as high-pressure processing, cold plasma, pulsed electric fields, and modified atmosphere packaging, have substantial potential to extend shelf life while preserving nutritional and sensory quality. Active and intelligent packaging, bio-preservatives, and nanomaterials act as complementary solutions to enhance safety and quality control. At the same time, blockchain, IoT sensors, AI, and predictive analytics-driven digitalization of the supply chain are opening new opportunities in traceability, demand forecasting, and cold chain management. Nevertheless, regulatory uncertainty, high capital investment requirements, heterogeneity among meat types, and consumer hesitancy towards novel technologies remain significant barriers. Furthermore, the scalability of advanced solutions is limited in emerging nations due to digital inequalities. Convergent approaches that combine technical innovation with policy harmonization, stakeholder capacity building, and consumer education are essential to address these challenges. System-level strategies based on circular economy principles can further reduce meat loss and waste, while enabling by-product valorization and improving climate resilience. By integrating preservation innovations and digital tools within the framework of UN Sustainable Development Goal 12.3, the meat sector can make meaningful progress towards sustainable food systems, improved food safety, and enhanced environmental outcomes. However, adherence to a life-long gluten-free diet (GFD) may promote psychological suffering and disordered eating. The Coeliac Disease Food Attitudes and Behaviours Scale (CD-FAB) is the only instrument specifically designed to evaluate these aspects in individuals with CD. Objective: This study aimed to translate the CD-FAB and test its reliability in the Brazilian population. Methods: The research was conducted in three stages: (i) translation and cultural adaptation of CD-FAB into Brazilian Portuguese; (ii) pretesting with Brazilian individuals diagnosed with CD to assess item understanding; and (iii) psychometric evaluation through reproducibility (test–retest reliability) via intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) and internal consistency via Cronbach’s alpha. Results: The CD-FAB was successfully adapted to the Brazilian CD population (Child CD-FAB-BR) and demonstrated strong internal consistency (α = 0.807) and an intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC = 0.928). Conclusions: The Brazilian version of CD-FAB proved to be reliable for assessing food attitudes and behaviours in people with CD, potentially allowing for the identification of factors to guide research and clinical practice by driving behaviour-based strategies to improve nutritional education and strategic policies for coeliac patients. Studies with larger and more diverse samples are recommended to provide external validation of the instrument. Full article

Consumer demand for organic products has grown substantially in Southern Europe, driven by health, environmental, and ethical concerns. Understanding cross-country differences in attribute preferences and sociodemographic influences is critical to inform marketing strategies and policy interventions targeting organic food consumption. To perform a comparative study across Portugal, Spain, and Greece, regular organic consumers were surveyed (250 per country) using a culturally adapted Best–Worst Scaling questionnaire. Socio-demographic variables and ten organic food attributes were analysed using MANOVA, Kruskal–Wallis tests, PCA, and cluster analysis. Spanish and Portuguese consumers prioritised health, environmental impact, absence of GMOs, and certification, while Greeks emphasised price, appearance, taste expectation, and nutrition. Age, gender, and education influenced attribute importance differently across countries, revealing distinct national consumption patterns and preferences. Findings highlight substantial heterogeneity: health and environmental attributes dominate in Portugal and Spain, reflecting strong certification and sustainability awareness, whereas Greek consumers focus on value, sensory qualities, and nutrition, indicating lower organic uptake and stronger price sensitivity. Older and more educated consumers valued certification and provenance, women emphasised health and environmental benefits, and men responded more to convenience and status cues. These patterns suggest that marketing and policy strategies should combine universal motivators with tailored approaches addressing national, demographic, and cultural differences to enhance organic consumption. Cross-country differences reveal the need for context-specific interventions promoting organic food while leveraging common health and sustainability drivers. Full article

Aims: To evaluate the quality of lunch menus for workers in commercial food services across social, health and environmental sustainability dimensions. Methods: Mixed methods were applied to five restaurants. Data collection included a sociodemographic questionnaire, the Brazilian Food Insecurity Scale (EBIA), workers’ nutritional status, nutritional composition of 111 lunch menus, and environmental footprints. Data triangulation integrated caloric–nutritional adequacy, food insecurity, obesity, protein supply, and environmental footprints. Results: We assessed 261 participants (71.6% male; average age 32.3; 53.5% with a high school education). Food insecurity affected 53.3% and was associated with income, education, household composition, and municipality (p < 0.05). Nutritional status (n = 438) showed 68.3% were overweight/obese; obesity affected 42.7% of women and 30.5% of men. Menu analyses (n = 111) showed adequate energy and protein, but excessive lipids and sodium and reduced carbohydrates. Environmental analyses indicated beef had the highest impact; protein type was more influential than quantity, indicating no simple linear nutrition–impact relationship. Conclusion: Widespread food insecurity and obesity co-occurred with menus characterized by excessive lipids, sodium, and beef-driven impacts. The findings highlight that health and sustainability outcomes depend on both menu quality and social context, necessitating integrated, multidimensional policies. Full article

Background: There is a high prevalence of the double burden of malnutrition (DBM) in children and adolescents in South Asia. This research aims to explore which sociodemographic factors are attributed to DBM in urban Bangladesh, a South Asian country. Methods: We conducted secondary analyses of data obtained from the national survey of childhood obesity among school-age children in Bangladesh (2012–2013). The sample includes 4140 children (aged 5–9 years) and adolescents (10–19 years) randomly recruited from the city corporation (urban) areas in all administrative divisions. At the population level, DBM was defined as the coexistence of underweight and overweight/obesity among children and adolescents. At the household level, DBM was defined as maternal underweight co-occurring with child overweight/obesity within the same mother-child dyad. A multivariable logistic regression model was fitted to estimate odds ratios and 95% confidence intervals. A rapid policy review was conducted to understand the implication of the results obtained from the analysis. Results: The prevalence of DBM at the population level was 45.2% (95% CI: 42.5–45.5%), ranging between 40.0% and 47.6% across seven divisions (p < 0.001). At the household level, DBM prevalence was 16.6% (95% CI: 14.7–18.7%), ranging between 14.0% and 19.0% across seven divisions (p = 0.015). At the population level, DBM odds were 56% higher among younger children (5–9 years) than adolescents (10–19 years) (OR: 1.56; 95% CI: 1.37–1.78), and this association was found in four divisions. At the household level (mother-child pairs), DBM odds were 64% higher in younger children than adolescents (OR: 1.64; 95% CI:1.38–1.95); and higher in children living at a lower-middle socioeconomic status (SES) and middle SES, than upper SES. The policy review revealed that Bangladesh has made substantial commitments to improve nutrition; however, reference to DBM is absent from policy documents. Conclusions: The prevalence of DBM is high among children in urban areas in Bangladesh, disproportionately affecting younger children and households with low SES. In the current policy space, Bangladesh should revise national nutrition frameworks to recognize DBM as a public health priority and implement region-sensitive strategies for preventing and reducing malnutrition among school-aged children. Nutrition risk is prevalent in community-dwelling older adults, and leads to increased morbidity and mortality. Understanding the factors associated with the development of high nutrition risk is crucial for the development of appropriate programs and policies to address this problem. Therefore, our objective was to identify the psychosocial factors correlated with the development of high nutrition risk, as assessed by SCREEN-8, among Canadian adults categorized by ten-year age groups (45–54, 55–64, 65–74, and 75+). We used data from 17,051 participants in the tracking cohort of the Canadian Longitudinal Study on Aging and employed multivariable binomial logistic regression to identify the social and demographic factors associated with the emergence of high nutrition risk at follow-up, three years after the baseline. Baseline data were gathered between 2011 and 2015. At baseline, 34.4% of participants across all age groups were at high nutrition risk, while 40.0% were at high risk at follow-up. Factors consistently associated with the development of high nutrition risk across all age groups included lower levels of social support, lower self-rated social standing, infrequent participation in sports or physical activities, infrequent participation in cultural or educational activities, and lower household incomes. Programs and policies addressing these factors may reduce the prevalence of high nutrition risk and the development of high nutrition risk. Full article
