The market for specialised kiwifruit varieties, such as those with red pulp, remains a niche sector with considerable growth potential in several European countries, including Spain, Italy, Germany, and France. This study applies to the Rasch model to gain a comprehensive understanding of consumer behaviour, specifically pertaining to preferences, attitudes, and propensity towards purchasing both conventional and novel kiwifruit variants. A questionnaire was developed and administered to gather specific information on consumer behaviour. The collected data were analysed using a Rating Scale Rasch Model to construct a valid measure of attitude toward kiwifruit, which was subsequently used in regression models to explain purchase propensity. The findings indicate that marketing strategies should focus on enhancing attitudes towards kiwifruit by leveraging specific product attributes and addressing demographic nuances to effectively promote the consumption of yellow, red, and organic varieties. Globalization and market saturation have led Portuguese textile companies to seek international markets not only for growth but also to contribute to their country’s international image. This study aims to explore how the internationalization of the Portuguese textile sector into the Chinese market contributes to Portugal’s destination image and identify the critical success factors in this process. The research follows an inductive, qualitative methodology based on semi-structured interviews with two groups of companies: those already operating in China (n = 5) and those preparing to enter the market (n = 5). The interviews were thematically analyzed to extract key patterns and insights. The findings reveal that successful companies operate in the luxury segment, rely on prior international experience, and often use local intermediaries. Firms planning to internationalize highlight quality differentiation, brand authenticity, and innovation as strategic advantages. These insights support the role of niche positioning and cultural adaptation in building both commercial success and a refined international image of Portugal. This study contributes to the literature by linking internationalization and destination branding through industry-specific case evidence and offers practical implications for managers targeting emerging markets like China. The international trade in agricultural products is complex and diverse. Global buyers must diversify their import sources, while sellers must explore new market opportunities. In the past, there has been no analysis on how second-tier exporters, with a smaller market share compared to dominant exporters, interact in the same target market and within an existing trade market and what factors affect trade prices and market forces. Based on Vollrath’s revealed competitive advantage index framework, this study analyzes the global tangerine trade (HS08052100) and means of production from 2008 to 2021, performs clustering, and estimates the residual demand elasticities of two main second-tier exporting countries—South Africa and Morocco—in four major importing countries for empirical analysis. The results show that South African tangerines have a lower market share than Moroccan tangerines in the Netherlands, the United States, and the United Kingdom. However, all data indicate that the residual demand elasticity for the country’s products in the target markets is negative, indicating that South African exporters have market influence in all three markets and significantly affect the prices of Moroccan products in these markets. Unlike other studies that have focused on the ranking analysis of export indices, the novelty of this study is that it provides an oligopolistic framework based on agricultural value chain analysis, which can be used for many countries with limited export scales. The method proposed in this study is expected to help citrus traders to effectively find export markets by evaluating the remaining market niches using key market data and the prices of similar competitors in the same category. Consumer scrutiny of fat content in foods is becoming a notable trend in health concerns. This study aims to develop a novel functional low-fat goat feta cheese by utilizing polydextrose (PDX) and inulin as dietary fiber-based fat replacers to improve its overall characteristics. The physicochemical and textural properties, along with consumer acceptance, of the feta cheese were evaluated across three fat levels (full-fat [FFC], reduced-fat [RFC], low-fat [LFC]) and three fibers: PDX, inulin, and their combination. The intercorrelation of all characteristics was assessed through principal component analysis and Pearson’s correlation. Fat reduction significantly altered the cheese’s visual properties, increasing lightness and the total color difference, which inversely correlated with a* and b* values. Lower-fat cheeses exhibited decreased pH and increased lactic acid, with salinity playing a crucial role in both lactic acid development and texture. Under Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), PDX yielded a cheese matrix with a finer pore structure than inulin or the combined fibers. Lower-fat cheeses exhibited greater hardness, with PDX resulting in the highest hardness among the fiber treatments. Crucially, the RFC with PDX was as well-received by consumers as the FFC. These findings not only empower goat farmers and cheese entrepreneurs to increase their product value for niche market but also contribute to sustainability by providing a healthier food option for functional benefits. This study explores the marketing potential of artisanal agri-food products in Ukraine by examining their structural, regional, and consumer dimensions. Amid growing interest in sustainable and locally rooted food systems, the research addresses how artisanal production can evolve from informal crafts to market-recognized value. This study is based on an analysis of official statistical data and an analysis of registered artisanal food producers in specific areas in Ukraine. It emphasizes the role of household-based agriculture in securing raw materials, the impact of cultural–tourism infrastructure on product visibility, and the benefits of self-sufficiency in raw material sourcing for product differentiation. The findings reveal that regions with stronger household production and cultural engagement demonstrate higher activity in the artisanal food sector. This study concludes that artisanal food production offers a viable pathway for regional development, rural resilience, and the strengthening of local food identity. Full article

Chestnut flour, obtained through drying and milling of Castanea sativa fruits, has evolved from a subsistence food into a sought-after niche product, appreciated for its naturally gluten-free profile, high starch content, and richness in micronutrients. Over the past decade, its demand has steadily increased due to consumer perception of the health benefits associated with chestnut consumption. As the market for chestnut flour expanded from small-scale to large-scale production, alternative methods to the traditional process were developed. Its distinctive aroma and flavor are strongly influenced by processing methods, which are the focus of this study. Two drying approaches were compared: a traditional smoke-based method (drying house named metato) characterized by a wood-drying method and a controlled laboratory process using a forced-air dryer that maintained a constant temperature of 40 °C. The impact of these methods on the physico-chemical composition, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and sensory properties of the flour was evaluated using chemical, instrumental, and sensory analyses. The traditional method enhanced the flour’s aromatic complexity and typicity through the application of smoke, which has been demonstrated to generate volatile organic compounds (VOCs), such as guaiacol, furfural, and o-creosol, that are associated with the smoked aroma. Nevertheless, if not properly managed, it can lead to undesirable sensory notes due to excessive smoke exposure. In contrast, the laboratory-controlled process ensured better preservation of bioactive compounds—such as polyphenols (351 mg GAE/100 g dm) and ascorbic acid (322 mg/kg dm)—while retaining the aroma notes associated with fresh chestnuts. Optimizing processing methods may support the valorization of chestnut flour as a high-quality ingredient in the modern gluten-free and functional food market. Full article

The aquarium trade includes a niche but significant market for ornamental wood, yet its sustainability remains largely unexamined. This study combines traditional wood anatomical methods with conservation assessments to investigate the sustainability of this overlooked sector. We investigated the botanical identity of aquarium wood products to assess mislabelling, conservation concerns, and potential environmental risks. Using macroscopic and microscopic wood anatomy techniques, we analysed wood samples from the aquarium trade to determine taxonomic identity. We also examined the origin, conservation status, and possible ecological implications of the identified taxa. We identified woods from diverse families, including Myrtaceae, Ericaceae, Fabaceae, and Ebenaceae, with some species listed as threatened. Widespread mislabelling obscures conservation status, enabling unsustainable trade. Moreover, several samples were identified as roots, raising concerns about soil disruption and habitat degradation. By linking wood anatomy and ecosystem impacts, we show that the aquarium wood trade lacks transparency, posing risks to biodiversity conservation and ecosystem stability. Our findings underscore the pressing need for effective regulatory oversight, accurate labelling, and sustainable sourcing to mitigate environmental impacts and promote responsible trade practices. Green banking has become a concept of interest, particularly with the focus on the role played by banks in pursuing Sustainable Development Goal 13 on climate action. This study is distinguished from previous ones in that it aimed at investigating the multi-regional view on green banking practices/activities around the world with a special emphasis on the opportunities and challenges that various banks encounter in different geographical areas. A systematic review approach was adopted based on the Web of Science and Scopus databases, in which 159 articles were retrieved and 62 articles synthesized through a thematic analysis. The research process was demonstrated through a Prisma 2020 flowchart. Key multiregional green banking activities identified include digital banking, green loan or sukuk products for Islam-dominated economies, green services and investments, and financing of green infrastructure. In essence, the implementation of green banking is either directly through active green lending and greening their operations or indirectly through enhancing conditions. The key challenges identified include regulatory handles, social economic and culture hinderances, transition risk and the high cost of compliance, greenwashing concerns, and weak investor confidence. The most prevalent opportunities included green banking as a strategic competitive advantage, emerging market niche, and as a strategy for long-term climate risk management. Full article

YouTube has emerged as a powerful platform for digital content distribution, particularly in niche sectors such as fisheries and environmental sustainability. This study examines the impact of specific keywords on video visibility and engagement, focusing on fishery-related YouTube channels within the broader supply chain context. Using a statistical analysis with R software, this study isolates the influence of keywords while controlling for macro-characteristics such as video duration, title length, and description length. The findings reveal that while most structural video attributes do not significantly impact views, keyword optimization in video titles is crucial in improving discoverability. Additionally, a positive correlation between views and user engagement (likes) is confirmed, highlighting the role of interaction in content promotion. These insights provide actionable recommendations for content creators seeking to enhance their digital outreach while offering theoretical contributions to search engine optimization (SEO) and social media marketing strategies. This study examines the policy and technological dynamics shaping China’s road transport sector’s transition to low-carbon sustainability, focusing on battery electric vehicles (BEVs) and hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicles (HFCEVs). As the world’s second-largest carbon emitter, China faces significant challenges in reducing its fossil fuel dependency in road transport, which accounts for diverse emissions and energy security risks. The present work, using a dual tech multi-level perspective (DTMLP) framework integrating multi-level perspective (MLP) and an advocacy coalition framework (ACF), analyzes the interplay of landscape pressures (global carbon constraints), regime dynamics (policy–market interactions), and niche innovations (BEV/FCEV competition). The results reveal BEVs’ dominance in light-duty markets, achieving remarkable operational emission reductions but facing lifecycle carbon lock-ins from battery production and coal-dependent power grids. HFCEVs demonstrate potential for heavy-duty decarbonization but struggle with gray hydrogen reliance and infrastructure gaps. Policy evolution highlights shifting governance from subsidies to market-driven mechanisms, alongside regional disparities in implementation. This study proposes a three-phase roadmap: structural optimization (2025–2030), technological adaptation (2030–2045), and hydrogen–electric system integration (post-2045), emphasizing material innovation, renewable energy alignment, and multi-level governance. Our findings underscore the necessity of coordinated policy–technology synergies, grid decarbonization, and circular economy strategies, to overcome institutional inertia and achieve China’s ‘Dual Carbon’ targets. This work provides actionable insights for global sustainable transport transitions amid competing technological pathways and geopolitical resource constraints. Full article

Selection bias can cause recommendation systems to over-rely on users’ historical behavior and ignore potential interests, thus reducing the diversity and accuracy of recommendations. Our research on selection bias reveals that the existing literature often overlooks the impact of sentiment factors on selection bias. In recommendation tasks, sentiment bias—stemming from users’ sentiment reactions—can lead to the suggestion of low-quality products to important users and unfair recommendations of niche items (targeted at specific markets or purposes). Addressing sentiment bias and enhancing recommendations for key users could help balance research on selection bias. Sentiment bias is embedded in user ratings and reviews. To mitigate this bias, it is essential to analyze user ratings and comments to uncover genuine sentiments. To this end, we have developed a sentiment analysis module aimed at eliminating discrepancies between reviews and ratings, providing accurate sentiment scores, extracting users’ true opinions, and reducing sentiment bias. Additionally, we have designed a combinatorial function that adapts to three distinct scenarios for bias correction. Moreover, we introduce the concept of dynamic debiasing, where the modeling time is not fixed but varies over time. On this basis, we propose a dynamic selection debiased recommendation method based on sentiment analysis. This paper demonstrates how the three approaches—sentiment analysis for data sparsity, combinatorial functions for dataset optimization, and time-dynamic modeling with inverse propensity weighting—can effectively mitigate selection bias. Our experiments with multiple real-world datasets show that our model can significantly enhance recommendation performance. Full article

This article explores the challenge of developing a sustainable cultural brand for cities that are primarily perceived as tourist destinations. While major urban hubs like Berlin (DE), Edinburgh (UK), and Lisbon (PT) have successfully transitioned from being known mainly for tourism to becoming recognized cultural destinations, the process behind this transformation remains underexplored, especially when it comes to mid-sized cities. How does a town move beyond its touristic image to build a lasting cultural identity? What strategies enable this shift, and what role do different stakeholders play? Focusing on the Romanian city of Brașov, a scenic destination in Transylvania mostly known for its natural environment and medieval architecture, the paper addresses this gap by investigating how a cultural brand can be developed through strategic marketing efforts. Using an integrated approach that combines two qualitative studies and one quantitative analysis, the research provides new insights into (i) cultural marketing strategies that can enhance Brașov’s city brand; (ii) stakeholder perspectives on developing Brașov’s cultural identity; and (iii) the role of Generation Z, whose influence on urban cultural branding has, so far, been minimally researched, in shaping the cultural future of cities, particularly Brașov. Some of the findings highlight key areas for developing Brașov’s cultural brand, including expanding nightlife activities, introducing more contemporary and year-round themed festivals, and tailoring promotional efforts to the short attention spans of the “TikTok generation”. Participants emphasized the need for a more diverse range of cultural events, including experimental and niche performances, alongside stronger educational initiatives to encourage long-term engagement by involving schools and universities. The results offer actionable insights for policymakers, urban planners, and cultural leaders seeking to develop a city brand centered around culture, focusing on long-term identity and community engagement rather than solely on tourism. This scoping review investigates the labor market challenges and coping strategies of highly skilled second-generation immigrants in Europe who, despite their educational and professional accomplishments, face persistent barriers related to ethnic, cultural, and religious identities. Synthesizing existing literature, the review examines obstacles to the economic integration of highly educated children of immigrants, highlighting both their perceptions of these barriers and the adaptive strategies they employ. A systematic search was conducted across Scopus, Web of Science, and EBSCOhost to identify studies published between 2010 and 2024. The selection process followed a structured five-stage framework, including defining research questions, identifying and selecting relevant studies, charting the data, and synthesizing findings. A total of 1192 records were initially identified, with 1022 retained after duplicate removal. After applying inclusion and exclusion criteria, 68 studies were included in the review. Findings indicate that hiring discrimination, occupational segregation, and exclusion from elite professional networks remain key barriers, particularly for those of Muslim background. Despite achieving professional success, many continue to encounter symbolic boundaries that limit career advancement. In response, second-generation professionals adopt various coping strategies, including ethnic niche formation, entrepreneurship, and transnational mobility, to navigate labor market disadvantages. Challenging traditional assimilation narratives, findings reveal that professional success does not guarantee societal acceptance, as ethnic and cultural identities continue to pose significant barriers. The review concludes by identifying key research gaps, advocating for further exploration of organizational practices that perpetuate ethnic inequalities within high-skill professions, and examining transnational mobility as a coping strategy for second-generation elites. Future research should explore how gender and ethnicity intersect to shape career trajectories for second-generation women. Additionally, expanding research beyond the predominant focus on Muslim professionals to include other religious and ethnic groups would provide a more comprehensive understanding of how identity markers influence labor market outcomes. Finally, as demographic shifts reshape European labor markets, comparative studies should assess how different institutional and cultural frameworks influence patterns of inclusion and exclusion for highly skilled second-generation professionals. An emerging alternative to conventional piezoelectric technologies, which continue to dominate the ultrasound medical imaging (US) market, is Capacitive Micromachined Ultrasonic Transducers (CMUTs). Ultrasound transducers based on this technology offer a wider frequency bandwidth, improved cost-effectiveness, miniaturized size and effective integration with electronics. These features have led to an increase in the commercialization of CMUTs in the last 10 years. We conducted a review to answer three main research questions: (1) What are the commercially available CMUT-based clinical sonographic devices in the medical imaging space? (2) What are the medical imaging applications of these devices? (3) What is the performance of the devices in these applications? We additionally reported on all the future work expressed by modern studies released in the past 2 years to predict the trend of development in future CMUT device developments and express gaps in current research. The search retrieved 19 commercially available sonographic CMUT products belonging to seven companies. Four of the products were clinically approved. Sonographic CMUT devices have established their niche in the medical US imaging market mainly through the Butterfly iQ and iQ+ for quick preliminary screening, emergency care in resource-limited settings, clinical training, teleguidance, and paramedical applications. There were no commercialized 3D CMUT probes. Full article

There is a trend towards urbanization and thus higher energy consumption in buildings, while decarburization and renewable energy sources (RESs) are becoming top priorities. Building-integrated wind turbines (BIWTs) represent a potential solution, especially in urban areas where space is limited. The aim of this article is to examine the technical, economic, and environmental aspects of the application of BIWTs based on the scientific literature, considering innovations and challenges related to their wider application. The analysis shows that BIWTs have a high capital cost (CapEx) and levelized cost of electricity (LCOE) due to the lower capacity factor, shorter lifetime, and high cost of building integration. However, the application of technologies such as computational fluid dynamics (CFD), additive manufacturing (3D printing), and artificial intelligence (AI) makes it possible to enhance the efficiency of turbines and reduce production and maintenance costs. Esthetically acceptable performance, noise reduction and possible integration with photovoltaic systems further enhance BIWT. In the short term, BIWT will remain a niche market, but policies and legislation mandating greater use of RES in buildings, as well as financial incentives, can significantly boost the growth of BIWT, which is particularly likely in coastal areas with favorable wind conditions. In the long term, BIWT has the potential to make an important contribution to sustainable urban development and the energy transition. Full article
