The Loess Plateau in China is highly susceptible to frequent landslides and other geological disasters, which have led to substantial losses of natural and human resources and are frequently reported in the news media. Yuzhong County, located east of Lanzhou City, is a mountainous region with considerable development potential. On 7 August 2025, this area experienced a large-scale geological disaster characterized by a compound event involving both landslides and debris flows, resulting in nearly several hundred casualties. With the ongoing urban expansion of Yuzhong County in recent years, the prediction and prevention of geological disasters have become increasingly critical. This study employed three machine learning algorithms—Multiple Logistic Regression (LR), Random Forest (RF), and XGBoost (XG)—to assess landslide susceptibility in Yuzhong County. A total of 169 historical landslide points, supplemented by additional sites identified through field investigations, were compiled, along with 200 non-landslide locations. Multiple environmental factors were incorporated into the models to analyze landslide susceptibility across different areas. Because LR can effectively capture the generalized influence of precipitation variability, it was selected as the primary model for the final susceptibility mapping. To more accurately evaluate the impact of precipitation on landslide occurrence, average seasonal precipitation across the four seasons was used as a predictive factor. To refine the risk assessment at the township level, both raster-based and landslide-unit-based evaluation approaches were adopted. Overlay analyses were then performed by integrating urban infrastructure, population distribution, and predicted landslide hazard zones, while also accounting for the potential influence of extreme precipitation events. The results reveal that the mountainous areas in eastern Mapo Township, southern Xiaokangying Township, southern Xiaguanying Town, and the south-central part of Qingshuiyi Township are high-risk zones prone to group-occurrence landslide disasters. Our communication summarizes the recent changes in the paraphyletic species Orthoflavivirus encephalitidis. The paraphyly arises due to louping-ill virus (LIV), which is genetically closer to the European subtype of tick-borne encephalitis virus (TBEV). To maintain a concept of monophyly, we have split Orthoflavivirus encephalitidis into two monophyletic species: Orthoflavivirus zilberi (after Lev A. Zilber—the head of the expedition that identified and characterized TBEV in the Soviet Far East in 1937) and Orthoflavivirus neudoerflense, named after Neudörfl, a town in Austria where the reference strain Neudoerfl was first isolated. Also, to remove the resulting ambiguity in the virus name “tick-borne encephalitis virus”, we have proposed new names—Asian TBEV (TBEV-AS) for Orthoflavivirus zilberi, and European TBEV (TBEV-EU) for Orthoflavivirus neudoerflense. Distribution Dynamics of Park Green Spaces in China and Their Influencing Factors: Evidence from 1760 County Seats

Urban park green spaces are key infrastructure for improving the quality of the living environment, enhancing residents’ well-being, and strengthening ecological resilience. Targeting 1760 county seats in China, this study combines the stock and incremental synergy analysis matrix, exploratory spatial data analysis, and explainable machine learning (EML) methods (SHAP) to systematically reveal the spatiotemporal patterns, spatial association characteristics, and nonlinear paths of influencing factors regarding the spatial configuration of park green spaces in county seats from 2015 to 2024. The low-stock expansion zone is dominant and concentrated in the western region and non-core urban agglomerations. The high-stock expansion zone is of the dominant type, concentrated in the eastern coastal areas and core urban agglomerations. The low-stock contraction zone and high-stock contraction zone are, respectively, marginalized lock-in and degradation risk types, requiring priority intervention. The dynamics of the park green space configuration, including the stock, increment, and their synergy, all exhibit significant positive spatial autocorrelation. The influences of the nine factors exhibit four major characteristics: directional mixing, intensity gradation, path nonlinearity, and regional heterogeneity. The threshold effect is widespread, and the inflection point value varies depending on the factor and region type. This study constructs a nonlinear and interpretable analytical paradigm and, based on empirical results, proposes a new governance framework of “zoning–grading–staging–synergy”. It provides large-sample empirical evidence and theoretical support for the transformation of small-town park green spaces from “sectoral management” to “spatial governance”, offering significant policy value toward achieving the precise distribution and equitable sharing of regional green space resources. Historic urban manufacturing territories are increasingly being reconsidered as strategic components of metropolitan sustainability rather than obsolete remnants of industrial economies slated for redevelopment. While these districts have long been associated with pollution, environmental degradation, and post-industrial decline, growing interest in circular economy strategies, Urban Resource Recovery (URR), and climate adaptation has renewed attention to their territorial significance. Using the North Brooklyn Industrial Business Zone and the Newtown Creek watershed as a case study, this paper argues that certain historic manufacturing territories possess an inherent capacity to evolve into Metropolitan Metabolic Infrastructure because of inherited geographic, infrastructural, and institutional characteristics, including waterfront access, freight networks, industrial zoning, large industrial parcels, and utility systems. Drawing upon research developed through the New York City Department of Design and Construction’s Town+Gown Urban Resource Recovery Working Group, the study combines historical analysis, spatial interpretation, planning policy, and case-study research to examine the evolving relationship among urban metabolism, circular economy, environmental justice, and Healthy Cities. Rather than advocating industrial preservation irrespective of environmental performance, the paper argues that these territories can support metropolitan material circulation while advancing cleaner industrial practices, environmental remediation, and more equitable urban development. The Metropolitan Metabolic Infrastructure framework offers a planning perspective for understanding how inherited manufacturing landscapes may contribute to resilient, circular, and healthier metropolitan regions while informing future comparative research on industrial territories undergoing similar transitions worldwide. Livelihood space serves as a fundamental medium for the livelihood practices of rural households. Understanding its optimization and reconstruction is essential for promoting the sustainable development of resettled households. This study adopts a spatial perspective to develop a multidimensional measurement framework for livelihood space. Focusing on resettled households in the karst regions of Guizhou, China, we integrate the Optimal Parameter-based Geographical Detector (OPGD) with fuzzy-set Qualitative Comparative Analysis (fsQCA) to systematically analyze the driving mechanisms and equifinal configuration pathways involved in the reconstruction of livelihood space. The key results are as follows: (1) The overall livelihood space is characterized as moderate. Among the various dimensions, institutional and cultural spaces receive the highest scores, followed by social and production spaces, while residential space is rated the lowest. (2) Excluding residential space, there are significant dimensional disparities across different resettlement and livelihood typologies. Households resettled in county towns outperform those in non-county areas. In terms of livelihood types, integrated and off-farm households rank the highest, whereas farming-dependent and subsidy-dependent households rank the lowest. (3) The OPGD analysis indicates that household income and accessibility to public services are primary drivers, exhibiting a bivariate nonlinear synergistic enhancement. (4) The fsQCA findings confirm that the reconstruction of livelihood space is not driven by a single factor; rather, it is influenced by four equifinal pathways formed through nonlinear interactions of multiple conditions, collectively contributing to the enhancement of high-livelihood space. The integration of OPGD and fsQCA moves beyond conventional linear approaches, yielding fresh empirical evidence and new perspectives on livelihood space reconstruction and the sustainability of fragile regions. Under rapid urbanization and watershed-scale spatial restructuring, urban green-space systems are often treated as residual indicators after construction land has been allocated, which limits the capacity of blue–green networks to act as leading frameworks for spatial structure and development sequencing. Taking the Sanjiangkou New Town Master Plan in Lishui, Zhejiang Province, China, as a case, this study develops the concepts of landscape-flow transformation and locality in urban green-space networks and examines their generative, planning, and participatory mechanisms through planning-document interpretation, visual evidence-chain analysis, sequential scenario construction, and an exploratory public-participation questionnaire survey. The paper proposes an integrated Perception–Cognition–Interaction (PCI) and Ecology–Construction–Program (ECP) framework. The ECP framework clarifies how locality-based landscape ecology constrains network formation, how frontloaded green networks shape urban zoning and mobility structures, and how long-term construction, use, and feedback refine master-planning schemes. The PCI framework explains how the public enters planning communication through embodied locality perception, structural understanding, and interactive feedback. Based on 400 valid questionnaires, the results reveal significant differences between local and non-local respondents in locality perception and planning understanding. The PCI pathway provides exploratory evidence that perception, cognition, and interaction are closely associated in scenario-based planning communication. The study argues that green-space networks should be introduced as an ecological substrate, structural constraint, and dynamic feedback system rather than as post hoc environmental land-use allocation. Its contribution is to reposition locality from a visual character label to a mechanism of pattern generation, phasing, and participatory negotiation. Full article

Urban vitality is a key indicator for characterizing the quality of urban space and the operational status of urban functions. However, existing studies still have limitations in multidimensional vitality measurement at the block scale, the representation of hierarchical differences in cultural facilities, and the coupling coordination diagnosis of multidimensional vitality. This study takes 2504 blocks in the central urban area of Nanjing as the basic analytical units and integrates multi-source geospatial data, including VIIRS nighttime light data, Baidu Huiyan population heat data, POIs, road networks, and water systems, to construct a three-dimensional urban vitality evaluation system encompassing economic, social, and cultural vitality. A Composite Nighttime Light Index (CNLI) is constructed by geometrically fusing VIIRS nighttime light data with the kernel density of industry- and consumption-related POIs to reduce the impact of the spatial generalization of nighttime lights on block-scale economic vitality measurement. Meanwhile, population heat data and cultural POIs are used to characterize social vitality and cultural resource supply, respectively, and PCA, a coupling coordination model, and spatial autocorrelation analysis are combined to identify the spatial structure of multidimensional vitality and the dominant factors of disorder. External reference variables are also introduced to conduct convergent validity verification. The results indicate that the comprehensive vitality of Nanjing’s central urban area exhibits a distinct “core agglomeration–multi-node diffusion” structure. High-vitality zones are primarily concentrated in Xinjiekou, Confucius Temple, Hunan Road–Zhongyang Road, Longjiang, and the Nanjing Olympic Sports Center, with localized vitality patches forming at peripheral commercial and transportation nodes. Both comprehensive vitality and coupling coordination degree exhibit significant positive spatial autocorrelation, with Moran’s I values of 0.8089 and 0.8372, respectively. The disorder types show distinct quantitative differences and spatial differentiation. Among these, blocks with lagging cultural vitality are the most numerous; peripheral new towns and newly developed residential areas are more prone to cultural vitality lag; areas surrounding scenic spots, universities, and large ecological spaces tend to exhibit economic vitality lag; and less developed peripheral blocks primarily exhibit comprehensive disorder. Based on accessible multi-source geospatial data, this study constructs a block-scale framework for measuring multidimensional urban vitality and diagnosing coordination status. This framework can provide a reference for vitality identification, functional shortcoming diagnosis, and refined spatial governance in Nanjing’s central urban area, and offer a case reference for historic and cultural cities with similar spatial structures. Previous studies examining the link between urban health and land use have predominantly relied on qualitative or descriptive approaches, lacking comprehensive quantitative frameworks capable of systematically identifying influential factors and prioritizing interventions. This research introduces a multi-method analytical framework combining qualitative content analysis, Factor Analysis, and Importance–Performance Map Analysis (IPMA). In the first phase, MAXQDA was used to conduct qualitative content analysis and identify urban health indicators most influenced by land use. These indicators were assessed through a structured questionnaire comprising 41 items, distributed among residents of three neighborhood units within Phase 2 of Parand New Town, a rapidly growing planned settlement in the Tehran Metropolitan Area, with a minimum residency requirement of five years to ensure data reliability. Factor Analysis was employed to reduce the broader set of indicators into a smaller number of latent constructs, each reflecting a distinct dimension and forming the basis for the composite Urban Health Index. Subsequently, IPMA was applied to evaluate the importance and performance of each indicator within individual neighborhoods, enabling the identification of local intervention priorities. The findings show a substantial influence of the land use system on urban health. The second neighborhood unit, characterized by superior accessibility and a broader range of land uses, achieved the highest score of 3.062. This analytical framework offers urban planners a replicable and practical tool for identifying and prioritizing interventions that promote health-oriented and sustainable urban development. Background: According to well-known dietary recommendations, herbs and spices are part of a healthy, balanced diet, and their consumption may contribute to improved health. Globalisation fosters greater exposure to other cultures and cuisines, including the use of spices. This study aimed to assess the awareness and attitudes towards spices among Polish students in a rural area. Methods: A survey study was conducted among 278 Generation Z students (aged 18–28 years old) from a university located in a small town in southeastern Poland. Questions concerning, a.o., preparing meals, awareness of spices’ properties, and the use of seasoning were included. Results: Most of the respondents declared using a lot of spices beyond salt and pepper (61.2%), more often women than men (67.9% vs. 45.1%; p = 0.0004), and more often participants aged ≥23 years than ≤22 years (82.9% vs. 58.0%; p = 0.005). Participants who grew their own spices and often watched TV culinary programs used more seasonings (72.4%; p = 0.001 and 85.2%; p = 0.0002, respectively). Less than half of the respondents (45%) recognised health properties in some of the spices, and 28.1% of them recognised health properties in spices in general, with more older participants (45.7%; p = 0.0402). Respondents with the highest awareness of the health properties of spices used them more often to improve their health (42.3%; p < 0.00). Conclusions: Exposure to cuisines from other cultures and their spices and the willingness to try new flavours among respondents were low. This might be due to sociodemographic factors, including origin from small, rural, traditional communities, where attachment to familiar recipes might be observed. Moreover, awareness of the healing benefits of spice use was low. Therefore, education about the composition and use of local spices might be helpful in increasing their intake for the benefit of health. Full article

New towns often experience a structural transit gap in early stages, where transport supply lags behind population growth. Demand-responsive transit (DRT) has emerged as a promising complementary solution; however, most studies rely on MNL-based ICLV models that do not account for error covariance across alternatives. This study applies an ICLV model, integrating an Error Component Mixed Logit kernel with latent variables, to analyze mode choice behavior in transit-poor new towns. Based on an SP-off-RP survey of 644 residents in new towns, 2576 observations were analyzed. The model incorporates five latent variables, including Transit Dissatisfaction, Convenience, Safety, Travel Time, and Travel Companion Sensitivity, and captures unobserved correlations through a two-level nesting structure. Results show that DRT has a significantly positive alternative-specific constant, indicating latent acceptance beyond observable attributes. DRT adoption is more common among transit-poor new town residents and highly educated individuals, but less common among car owners. Users are more sensitive to access and waiting time than to in-vehicle time. Convenience, Safety, and Travel Time significantly influence DRT utility, while Travel Companion Sensitivity reveals heterogeneous effects across modes. These findings provide behavioral insights for designing effective DRT strategies in transit-poor new towns. Full article

Urban vitality is regarded as a cornerstone of sustainable urban development. While land use mix (LUM) is widely acknowledged for fostering vitality, most empirical evidence relies on mean-effect models, neglecting the heterogeneous impacts across different vitality levels. This overlooks the complex, context-dependent nature of LUM and risks perpetuating one-size-fits-all planning. Based on a theoretical framework that links LUM analysis with contemporary urban revitalization, public governance, and smart city development discussions, this study leverages a Spatial Durbin Quantile Regression (SDQR) framework with multi-source geospatial data from 511 blocks in Ningbo, China, to systematically investigate the distributional heterogeneity of LUM’s effects on urban vitality. We decompose LUM into “diversity”, “proximity”, and “coordination” dimensions, revealing three distinct mechanisms across the vitality spectrum. Results show “coordination” acts as a fundamental “ignite” mechanism, consistently driving vitality across all quantiles, especially in new towns and low-vitality areas. “Diversity” primarily serves as a “boost” mechanism, enhancing vitality in medium-to-high vitality areas, demonstrating a non-linear, conditional effect. Crucially, “proximity” exhibits a novel “cap & siphon” mechanism: its direct effect is often insignificant or negative in low-vitality areas (suggesting structural mismatch), while its significant negative spatial spillover effect (siphon effect) across all quantiles, particularly in low-vitality zones, highlights intense inter-area competition. Furthermore, LUM’s direct effects tend to diminish in high-vitality areas, indicating a saturation or “cap” effect. By revealing these heterogeneous impacts and spatial spillover dynamics, this research refines the boundary conditions of classic mixed-use propositions and provides a differentiated planning paradigm, moving from universal zoning to context-specific, stage-calibrated interventions that address areas based on their current vitality levels, spatial interactions and governance contexts. This paper examines the spatial integration of post-socialist churches and parish complexes within the modernist housing estates of Novi Zagreb. Constructed after 1990 in neighbourhoods originally planned without sacral programs, these buildings represent a specific form of post-socialist urban intervention. The study employs a qualitative, comparative approach, analysing five case studies through the parameters of urban context, volumetry, spatial composition, program, and public space interface. The analysis identifies a limited set of recurring typologies that define patterns of spatial integration within the existing urban fabric. The findings indicate that these complexes do not function as dominant urban elements, but instead adapt to the open, functionally organized structure of modernist planning. Their impact on public space remains limited, as they rarely generate new centres or clearly articulated urban nodes. At the same time, the results reveal a shift from singular religious buildings toward programmatically expanded parish complexes that incorporate social and community functions. However, this transformation remains largely internal and does not lead to a significant reconfiguration of the urban structure. The paper contributes to the understanding of post-socialist urban transformation by identifying typological patterns and interpreting religious architecture as a context-dependent urban actor. Industrial new towns have become important spatial instruments for regional economic development in China, yet many continue to struggle to attract and retain a stable workforce, support long-term settlement, and provide a complete urban living environment. Taking the Chenglingji New Port Area in central China as a case study, this paper applies the Industry–People–City analytical framework to examine the relationship among industrial development, residents’ everyday behaviours, and public service provision. The study combines field investigations, activity-diary interviews with 60 local residents, semi-structured interviews with 12 enterprise managers, and point-of-interest data on public service facilities. These materials are used for a primarily qualitative analysis supported by GIS-based spatial evidence. The findings show that the Chenglingji New Port Area has developed a clear basis of industrial agglomeration and four functional sectors, but public service provision remains mismatched with the everyday needs of different population groups. Managerial personnel and some technical workers continue to rely heavily on Yueyang’s main urban area for residence, consumption, leisure, and higher-order services, while locally based residents face combined deficits in commerce, transport, healthcare, education, cultural and recreational services, and public open spaces. The contribution of this study is twofold. First, it provides an empirically grounded assessment of the living conditions of labour and related residential groups in a resource-constrained inland industrial new town. Second, it demonstrates how the Industry–People–City analytical framework can be used to diagnose structural imbalances among industrial growth, population behaviour, and urban service provision. The study argues that improving the livability of industrial new towns should not depend solely on industrial expansion or one-off investment in high-standard facilities. Instead, phased, sector-specific, and user-oriented public service provision is needed to help industrial new towns gradually transform from mono-functional production-oriented growth poles into more complete and sustainable urban living nodes. Analysis of Fire Incident Characteristics and Countermeasure Study in Municipal Districts: A Case Study of Xiaoshan District

As key units in China’s new urbanization process, municipal districts exhibit distinct fire risk characteristics due to dense populations, concentrated infrastructure, and intensive socio-economic activities. Taking Xiaoshan District as an illustrative case of a highly urbanized and industrialized municipal district, this study analyzes fire incidents from 2020 to 2023 from temporal, spatial, and causal perspectives. During the study period, 5011 fire incidents were recorded, resulting in 3 deaths, 2 injuries, and direct property loss of 73.41 million CNY. The results indicate that highly urbanized and industrialized districts such as Xiaoshan may simultaneously face frequent fire occurrence pressure, relatively low casualty levels, and strong sensitivity to large-loss incidents. Temporally, fire occurrence was strongly coupled with human activity patterns rather than being dominated solely by seasonal factors. The period from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. accounted for 32.47% of daily fire incidents, whereas only 9.10% occurred between 2 a.m. and 6 a.m.; however, early morning fires were associated with more serious property loss. Spatially, resident population and industrial output value above designated size were identified as the primary socio-economic factors associated with the spatial differentiation of fire incidents and direct property loss at the town/subdistrict scale. In terms of causation, electrical issues were the leading cause of fire incidents, accounting for 31.95% of fires and 32.92% of direct property loss. In addition, direct property loss attributed to “other” causes was disproportionately high, highlighting the need to improve the professionalism, granularity, and consistency of fire cause investigation. These findings provide case-based empirical evidence for refined fire prevention, electrical fire control, early warning, and targeted fire safety management in highly urbanized and industrialized districts with similar development conditions. The Monk Parakeet (Myiopsitta monachus) is a psittacid species native to central and eastern South America that was introduced into many countries by traders, for its popularity as caged pets. After escapes or releases, it has been successful in establishing in new territories, capable of reproducing, dispersing, and exhibiting population growth in introduction sites during recent decades. It is considered a pest due to negative impacts, especially for its damage to agriculture and urban infrastructure. Although its global distribution has been previously described, given its high adaptability and effectiveness in colonizing new environments, many of these distribution maps may be outdated. We used eBird, a free online birding database, to locate sightings of this species globally and compared it with the reported range for the species. Additionally, we overlaid compiled data on species distribution with economic data to explore if there is a correlation between the reported parakeet presence in new cities and wealth. We compiled data from 1900 to 2024 and compared reported differences in the Monk Parakeet presence. Our results indicate that Monk Parakeets have invaded at least 31 countries, being present in capital cities, cities, towns, and rural territories. The number of cities where the species was reported as invasive increased significantly since 1985, by an average of 150% by decade. We found a positive pooled association between country-level Gross Domestic Product (GDP) per capita and the number of cities with Monk Parakeet records, although this pattern should be interpreted cautiously, given potential biases from observation effort, country size, and temporal co-variation. We present new evidence on Monk Parakeet’s rapid global expansion and deliver an updated map of the Monk Parakeet global distribution, relevant for planning and implementing control measures.
