Advanced electrical and electronic systems are placing increasingly stringent demands on high-temperature dielectric capacitors. Polyimide (PI) possesses excellent thermal stability, but its low dielectric constant and breakdown strength limit its energy storage performance. To address this, a nanocomposite was designed consisting of the amorphous SiO2-coated relaxor ferroelectric ceramic 0.6BaTiO3-0.4Bi(Mg0.5Ti0.5)O3 (BT-BMT@SiO2) and PI. This core–shell structure improves the organic-inorganic interface and mitigates dielectric mismatch, thereby synergistically enhancing the composite’s dielectric constant, breakdown strength, and energy storage performance. At 150 °C, the breakdown field strength and maximum discharge energy density of the 0.25 vol.% BT-BMT@SiO2/PI composite reached 381.81 MV/m and 1.14 J/cm3, respectively, representing increases of 32% and 67% compared to pure PI. These results indicate that the synergistic design of relaxor ferroelectric ceramics and core–shell interfaces is an effective strategy for enhancing the high-temperature energy storage performance of PI-based dielectric materials, providing important guidance for the development of high-performance capacitor materials. High-efficiency energy storage technologies have become particularly crucial with the ever-increasing demand for energy in recent years. Research on polymer nanocomposite dielectric materials has emerged as a prominent focus. Particularly, there is an urgent demand for the development of advanced dielectric film materials that exhibit superior energy storage performance over a wide temperature range. To this end, this study aims to investigate the effect of the molecular weight of reduced polyaniline (R-PANI) on the dielectric properties of all-organic composite films based on high-temperature-resistant polyetherimide (PEI). All-organic R-PANI/PEI composite films were fabricated by blending PEI matrix with R-PANI of varying molecular weights. Through combined density functional theory (DFT) calculations and experimental measurements, the blocking mechanism of R-PANI on charge carrier migration within the composite films was elucidated, showing a significant enhancement in the discharge energy density of PEI polymers while maintaining high charge–discharge efficiency. With charge–discharge efficiency maintained above 95%, R-PANI3/PEI achieved a discharge energy density of 2.36 J cm−3 at room temperature, nearly double that of pristine PEI (1.2 J cm−3). At 150 °C, the 1.0 wt% R-PANI3/PEI composite film retained a discharge energy density of 2.27 J cm−3 with a charge–discharge efficiency of 89.2%, outperforming pure PEI (1.1 J cm−3, 85.1%). These findings provide a new strategy for the design of all-organic composite dielectric films and demonstrate the potential of R-PANI in the application of high-performance capacitors and electrical energy storage. Ceramic-polymer nanocomposites combine the respective advantages of ceramics and polymers, boasting superior mechanical flexibility, thermal stability, optical transparency, and electrical conductivity, enabling their wide use in cutting-edge fields like medicine, aerospace, optoelectronic devices, and energy storage components. Notably, ceramic-polymer nanocomposites are a promising, widely recognized strategy for developing high-energy-density, low-dielectric-loss, and flexible capacitors, due to the ceramic phase’s intrinsic high dielectric constant, which enhances dielectric capability, and the polymer phase’s high breakdown strength and mechanical flexibility. Ultimately, ceramic-polymer nanocomposites can reach an optimal dielectric performance. In this study, polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) was used as the matrix material and barium titanate (BaTiO3) as the reinforcing phase within the composite structure. The BaTiO3 ceramic particles were incorporated into PVDF via spin-coating technology, with composite formulations prepared at different concentrations (0.5 wt%, 1.0 wt%, 1.5 wt%, 2.0 wt%, 2.5 wt%, 3.0 wt%). A series of key parameters were measured and compared, such as the dielectric constant, breakdown strength, and energy storage density, of the BT/PVDF nanocomposite. The results indicated that the BT/PVDF nanocomposite with the optimal low BaTiO3 content demonstrates remarkable performance, achieving a breakdown strength (Eb) of 500 MV/m and an effective energy storage density of 15.5 J/cm3. This represents an improvement over conventional uniformly high-filler films. Full article

Poly(lactic acid) (PLA)-based nanocomposites containing a mixture of graphene nanoplatelets (GNP) and carbon nanotube (CNT) as hybrid fillers were prepared using a solution-assisted sonication process followed by melt processing. The effects of the filler dispersion on dielectric properties and microwave absorbing (MWA) performance were systematically investigated. Two ionic liquids (ILs), trihexyl-(tetra-decyl)phosphonium bis (trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (IL1) and 11-carboxyundecyl-triphenylphosphonium bromide (IL2), were employed as dispersing agents for the carbonaceous fillers. Incorporation of IL-treated fillers resulted in enhanced dielectric permittivity and improved MWA performance of the PLA composites. The MWA properties were evaluated in X- band and Ku-band. A minimum reflection loss (RL) of −34 dB and an effective absorption bandwidth (EAB) of 2.1 GHz were achieved for the composite containing GNP/CNT/IL2 (HB3) at a weight ratio of 2.5:0.5:0.5 wt% with one 3 mm thick layer. The superior performance of IL2 is attributed to π-π and π-cation interactions between its phenyl-containing cation and the carbonaceous fillers, as well as improved compatibility with the PLA matrix due to carboxyl groups. Additionally, three-layered composite structures, combining PLA/GNP as the outer layer with IL-assisted hybrid fillers in the core and PLA/CNT at the bottom layer, achieved an extended EAB of 4.5 GHz for GNP/HB2/CNT arrangement and 4.35 GHz for the GNP/HB3/CNT arrangement, driven by enhanced scattering and internal reflection of microwaves. These results demonstrate the potential of IL-assisted hybrid filler dispersion in PLA for developing biodegradable materials with multifunctional applications as charge storage capacitors and microwave absorbing materials for sustainable electronics. The paper studied the effect of high-voltage short-pulse electrohydraulic discharge (HVSPED) on the processes of catalytic cracking of oil sludge in order to increase the yield of light hydrocarbon fractions. A set of laboratory experiments was carried out varying the key parameters of HVSPED—discharge voltage, capacitance of capacitor banks and processing time. As a catalyst, the developed nanocomposite catalyst bentonite was used, with nickel packed. The optimal electrophysical parameters of oil sludge treatment by HVSPED were determined, providing the maximum yield of gasoline and kerosene fractions. The effectiveness of HVSPED treatment of oil sludge in the presence of a catalyst was confirmed by DTA–thermogravimetric analysis and chromatographic-mass spectral analysis of the light and middle fractions of the hydrogenate. The proposed approach made it possible to enhance the resource and energy efficiency of oil sludge processing using HVSPED, demonstrating high potential for further industrial application Full article

Polypropylene (PP) dielectric capacitors are crucial for electronics and electric power systems due to their high power density. However, their relatively low energy density limits their practical application in energy storage devices, presenting a long-standing challenge. Montmorillonite (MMT), a natural phyllosilicate mineral abundantly found on earth, features a two-dimensional nanosheet structure and excellent insulating properties. MMT nanosheets have shown promise in enhancing the breakdown strength and energy storage capability of PP dielectric, but compatibility issues with the PP matrix remain a challenge. In this study, we propose a novel surface modification strategy in which polystyrene (PS)-capped MMT (PCM) nanosheets are synthesized through a polymerization–dissolution process. The modified PCM nanosheets demonstrate improved compatibility and are well dispersed within the PP matrix. Optimal loading of the PCM nanosheets effectively dissipate charge energy and hinder the growth of electric trees in the PP matrix. As a result, the PP nanocomposite with 0.2 wt% PCM nanosheets exhibits an enhanced breakdown strength of 619 MV m−1 and a discharged energy density of 4.23 J cm−3, with an energy storage efficiency exceeding 90%. These findings provide a promising strategy for the development of high-energy-density dielectric capacitors in an economical manner. Full article

A highly redox-active ternary nickel sulfide and cobalt-anchored carbon nanocomposite (NiS-Co@C) electrochemical electrode is synthesized by a two-step pyrolysis-hydrothermal method using biomass-derived carbon. The high-crystalline hierarchical porous nanostructure provides abundant voids and cavities, along with a large specific surface area, to improve the interfacial properties. The as-synthesized electrode achieved a specific capacity of 640 C g−1 at 1 A g−1, with a capacity retention of 93% over 5000 cycles, revealing outstanding electrochemical properties. Nickel sulfide nanoparticles embedded in the cobalt-anchored carbon framework improved redox activity, ion transport, and conductivity, resulting in a dominant diffusion-controlled battery-type behavior. Moreover, a hybrid supercapattery, based on battery-type NiS-Co@C as the positrode and capacitive-type activated carbon as the negatrode, achieved a maximum specific energy/power of 33 Wh kg−1/7.1 kW kg−1 with a 91% capacity retention after 5000 cycles. The synergistic effect of the combinatorial battery–capacitor behavior of the hybrid supercapattery has improved the specific energy–power considerably, leading the development of next-generation energy storage technologies. Flexible polymer-based piezoelectric nanogenerators (PENGs) have gained significant interest due to their ability to deliver clean and sustainable energy for self-powered electronics and wearable devices. Recently, the incorporation of fillers into the ferroelectric polymer matrix has been used to improve the relatively low piezoelectric properties of polymer-based PENGs. In this study, we investigated the effect of various nanofillers such as titania (TiO2), zinc oxide (ZnO), reduced graphene oxide (rGO), and lead zirconate titanate (PZT) on the PENG performance of the nanocomposite thin films containing the nanofillers in poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-trifluoro ethylene) (P(VDF-TrFE)) matrix. The nanocomposite films were prepared by depositing molecularly thin films of P(VDF-TrFE) and nanofiller nanoparticles (NPs) spread at the air/water interface onto the indium tin oxide-coated polyethylene terephthalate (ITO-PET) substrate, and they were characterized by measuring their microstructures, crystallinity, β-phase contents, and piezoelectric coefficients (d33) using SEM, FT-IR, XRD, and quasi-static meter, respectively. Multiple PENGs incorporating various nanofillers within the polymer matrix were developed by assembling thin film-coated substrates into a sandwich-like structure. Their piezoelectric properties, such as open-circuit output voltage (VOC) and short-circuit current (ISC), were analyzed. As a result, the PENG containing 4 wt% PZT, which was named P-PZT-4, showed the best performance of VOC of 68.5 V with the d33 value of 78.2 pC/N and β-phase content of 97%. The order of the maximum VOC values for the PENGs of nanocomposite thin films containing various nanofillers was PZT (68.5 V) > rGO (64.0 V) > ZnO (50.9 V) > TiO2 (48.1 V). When the best optimum PENG was integrated into a simple circuit comprising rectifiers and a capacitor, it demonstrated an excellent two-dimensional power density of 20.6 μW/cm2 and an energy storage capacity of 531.4 μJ within 3 min. This piezoelectric performance of PENG with the optimized nanofiller type and content was found to be superior when it was compared with those in the literature. This PENG comprising nanocomposite thin film with optimized nanofiller type and content shows a potential application for a power source for low-powered electronics such as wearable devices. Dielectric elastomer generators (DEGs) are electrostatic transducers capable of harvesting electrical energy from oscillating mechanical parts and storing it in a battery or supercapacitor. The energy conversion element typically consists of a flexible capacitor with a variable capacitance that depends on the applied stress cycle and requires an external voltage source (bias voltage). In designing an energy harvesting device from human gait, we propose integrating two components: a dielectric elastomer fabricated using a nanocomposite polyurethane (TPU-CaCu3Ti4O12) and an electret serving as a bias voltage source. In this work, we report on the electret fabrication and long-term charge retention properties using corona charging. The manufactured electrets are tested in coupling with the dielectric elastomer and allowed us to harvest an energy amount of 62 µJ/cycle (3.1 µJ/cm2) on a resistive load of 450 MΩ during motion cycles at a frequency of 0.5 Hz. Given the materials used, this approach is well suited to harvesting energy from human gait and holds promise for powering wearable devices. Full article

Hybrid supercapacitors (HSCs) are a novel type of supercapacitor composed of battery-type electrodes and capacitor-type electrodes, which have directly transformed the global energy landscape. On one hand, they can replace clean energy sources that are heavily dependent on climatic conditions in specific regions, thereby enhancing the effective utilization of intermittent energy sources. On the other hand, with their high energy density akin to secondary batteries and the long lifespan and high power density characteristic of supercapacitors, they perfectly bridge the gap between secondary batteries and supercapacitors. This article reviews the fundamental energy storage principles of HSCs and highlights the latest optimization strategies for HSCs based on transition metal oxides (TMOs) and carbon over the past two years. These strategies include heteroatom doping, heterostructured materials, nanocomposites, and metal–organic frameworks (MOF). Finally, prospects on future research directions of HSCs are discussed. Dielectric capacitors offer immense application potential in advanced electrical and electronic systems with their unique ultrahigh power density. Polymer-based dielectric composites with high energy density are urgently needed to meet the ever-growing demand for the integration and miniaturization of electronic devices. However, the universal contradictory relationship between permittivity and breakdown strength in traditional ceramic/polymer nanocomposite still poses a huge challenge for a breakthrough in energy density. In this work, all-organic carbon quantum dot CDs were synthesized and introduced into a poly(vinylidene fluoride) PVDF polymer matrix to achieve significantly boosted energy storage performance. The ultrasmall and surface functionalized CDs facilitate the polar β-phase transition and crystallinity of PVDF polymer and modulate the energy level and traps of the nanocomposite. Surprisingly, a synergistic dielectric enhancement and loss reduction were achieved in CD/PVDF nanocomposite. For one thing, the improvement in εr and high-field Dm originates from the CD-induced polar transition and interface polarization. For another thing, the suppressed dielectric loss and high-field Dr are attributed to the conductive loss depression via the introduction of deep trap levels to capture charges. More importantly, Eb was largely strengthened from 521.9 kV mm−1 to 627.2 kV mm−1 by utilizing the coulomb-blockade effect of CDs to construct energy barriers and impede carrier migration. As a result, compared to the 9.9 J cm−3 for pristine PVDF, the highest discharge energy density of 18.3 J cm−3 was obtained in a 0.5 wt% CD/PVDF nanocomposite, which is competitive with most analogous PVDF-based nanocomposites. This study demonstrates a new paradigm of organic quantum dot-enhanced ferroelectric polymer-based dielectric energy storage performance and will promote its application for electrostatic film capacitors. The need for responsible electronics is leading to great interest in the development of new bio-based devices that are environmentally friendly. This work presents a simple and efficient process for the creation of conductive nanocomposites using renewable materials such as cellulose nanofibers (CNF) from enzymatic pretreatment, poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)-poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS), and/or reduced graphene oxide (rGO). Different combinations of CNF, rGo, and PEDOT:PSS were considered to generate homogeneous binary and ternary nanocomposite formulations. These formulations were characterized through SEM, Raman spectroscopy, mechanical, electrical, and electrochemical analysis. The binary formulation containing 40 wt% of PEDOT:PSS resulted in nanocomposite formulations with tensile strength, Young’s modulus, and a conductivity of 70.39 MPa, 3.87 GPa, and 0.35 S/cm, respectively. The binary formulation with 15 wt% of rGO reached 86.19 MPa, 4.41 GPa, and 13.88 S/cm of the same respective properties. A synergy effect was observed for the ternary formulations between both conductive elements; these nanocomposite formulations reached 42.11 S/cm of conductivity and kept their strength as nanocomposites. The 3D design strategy provided a highly conductive network maintaining the structural integrity of CNF, which generated homogenous nanocomposites with rGO and PEDOT:PSS. These formulations can be considered as greatly promising for the next generation of low-cost, eco-friendly, and energy storage devices, such as batteries or electrochemical capacitors. Full article

The ubiquitous, rising demand for energy storage devices with ultra-high storage capacity and efficiency has drawn tremendous research interest in developing energy storage devices. Dielectric polymers are one of the most suitable materials used to fabricate electrostatic capacitive energy storage devices with thin-film geometry with high power density. In this work, we studied the dielectric properties, electric polarization, and energy density of PMMA/2D Mica nanocomposite capacitors where stratified 2D nanofillers are interfaced between the multiple layers of PMMA thin films using two heterostructure designs of the capacitors, PMMA/2D Mica/PMMA (PMP) and PMMA/2D Mica/PMMA/2D Mica/PMMA (PMPMP). The incorporation of a 2D Mica nanofiller in the low-dielectric-constant PMMA leads to an enhancement in the dielectric constant, with ∆ε ~ 15% and 53% for PMP and PMPMP heterostructures at room temperature. Additionally, a significant improvement in discharged energy density was measured for the PMPMP capacitor (Ud ~ 38 J/cm3 at 825 MV/m) compared to the pristine PMMA (Ud ~ 9.5 J/cm3 at 522 MV/m) and PMP capacitors (Ud ~ 19 J/cm3 at 740 MV/m). This excellent capacitive and energy storage performance of the PMMA/2D Mica heterostructure nanocomposite may inform the fabrication of thin-film, high-density energy storage capacitor devices for potential applications in various platforms. Electrostatic capacitors, with the advantages of high-power density, fast charging–discharging, and outstanding cyclic stability, have become important energy storage devices for modern power electronics. However, the insulation performance of the dielectrics in capacitors will significantly deteriorate under the conditions of high temperatures and electric fields, resulting in limited capacitive performance. In this paper, we report a method to improve the high-temperature energy storage performance of a polymer dielectric for capacitors by incorporating an extremely low loading of 0.5 wt% carbon quantum dots (CQDs) into a fluorene polyester (FPE) polymer. CQDs possess a high electron affinity energy, enabling them to capture migrating carriers and exhibit a unique Coulomb-blocking effect to scatter electrons, thereby restricting electron migration. As a result, the breakdown strength and energy storage properties of the CQD/FPE nanocomposites are significantly enhanced. For instance, the energy density of 0.5 wt% CQD/FPE nanocomposites at room temperature, with an efficiency (η) exceeding 90%, reached 9.6 J/cm3. At the discharge energy density of 0.5 wt%, the CQD/FPE nanocomposites remained at 4.53 J/cm3 with an efficiency (η) exceeding 90% at 150 °C, which surpasses lots of reported results. Full article

The results showed that BiOI with a tetragonal crystal structure had been formed. The interaction between activated carbon and BiOI was confirmed via all the mentioned tools. The obtained nanocomposites’ electrical conductivity, dielectric properties, and Ac impedance were studied at 59 KHz−1.29 MHz. AC and dc conductivities were studied at temperatures between 303 and 573 K within the frequency range of 59 KHz–1.29 MHz. The 10% activated carbon/BiOI nanocomposite possessed dc and AC conductivity values of 5.56 × 10−4 and 2.86 × 10−4 Ω−1.cm−1, respectively, which were higher than BiOI and the other nanocomposites. Every sample exhibited increased electrical conductivity values as the temperature and frequency rose, suggesting that all samples had semiconducting behavior. The loss and dielectric constants (ε′ and ε″) also dropped as the frequency increased, leading to higher dielectric loss. The Nyquist plot unraveled single semicircle arcs and a decreased bulk resistance, indicating decreased grain boundary resistance. Consequently, the electrical characteristics of BiOI, 1C/BiOI, 5C/BiOI, and 10C/BiOI implied their applicability as dielectric absorbers, charge-stored capacitors, and high-frequency microwave devices.
