Traditional ready-to-wear garments can mostly not conform to different body shapes because of the adoption of the generic sizing system, which leads to the local strain of concentration and morphological misfit. Auxetic structures, which have a negative Poisson’s ratio, permit enhanced redistribution of stress and geometry and allow deformation. Two auxetic knitted structures were developed by using 100% polyester and 100% nylon yarns with a fabric density of 41 Wales and 40 courses per inch. Characterization of the initial fabrics involved checking the behavior of negative Poisson’s ratio (NPR) where the polyester line (P1) structure shows the highest auxeticity, with a NPR of approximately −0.4 and peak strain reductions of 80–90%, as well as air permeability, moisture management, bend test, compression, roughness, friction properties and stiffness tests to check the mechanical and comfort-related performances. The standardized tunic garment was modeled in CLO 3D on three female body shapes—hourglass, pear and rectangle—with a constant size of 34. The fit map showed a strain of 91.49% in auxetic and 509.75% in single-jersey fabric at the hip area of the pear body shape when measuring fabric and body interaction. The findings indicate lower peak strain levels, which ascertain that increased adaptability is possible and support its use in the development of adaptive ready-to-wear garments. Full article

InAs quantum wells (QWs) are promising material systems due to their small effective mass, narrow bandgap, strong spin–orbit coupling, large g-factor, and transparent interface to superconductors. Therefore, they are promising candidates for the implementation of topological superconducting states. Despite this potential, the growth of InAs QWs with high crystal quality and well-controlled morphology remains challenging. Adding an overshoot layer at the end of the metamorphic buffer layer, i.e., a layer with a slightly larger lattice constant than the active region of the device, helps to overcome the residual strain and provides optimally relaxed lattice parameters for the QW. In this work, we systematically investigated the influence of overshoot layer thickness on the morphological, structural, strain, and transport properties of undoped InAs QWs on GaAs(100) substrates. Transmission electron microscopy reveals that the metamorphic buffer layer, which includes the overshoot layer, provides a misfit dislocation-free InAs QW active region. Moreover, the residual strain in the active region is compressive in the sample with a 200 nm-thick overshoot layer but tensile in samples with an overshoot layer thicker than 200 nm, and it saturates to a constant value for overshoot layer thicknesses above 350 nm. We found that electron mobility does not depend on the crystallographic directions. A maximum electron mobility of 6.07 × 105 cm2/Vs at 2.6 K with a carrier concentration of 2.31 × 1011 cm−2 in the sample with a 400 nm-thick overshoot layer has been obtained. Full article

An atomic-scale approach was employed to simulate the formation of precipitates with different lattice misfits in the early stages of the aging of supersaturated aluminum alloys. The simulation results revealed that the increase in lattice misfits could significantly promote the nucleation rate of precipitates, which results in a larger number and smaller size of the precipitates. The morphologies of the precipitates also vary with the degree of a lattice misfit. Moreover, the higher the lattice misfit, the earlier the nucleation of the second phase occurs, which can substantially inhibit the movement of dislocations. The research on the lattice misfit of precipitation can provide theoretical guidance for the design of high-strength aluminum alloys. Full article

The mechanism of solid-state dendrite formation in high-aluminum Fe-Al alloys is not clear. Applying an in-situ observation technique, the real-time formation and growth of FeAl solid-state dendrites during the eutectoid decomposition of the high-temperature phase Fe5Al8 is visualized. In-situ experiments by HT-CSLM reveal that proeutectoid FeAl usually does not preferentially nucleate at grain boundaries regardless of rapid or slow cooling conditions. The critical radii for generating morphological instability are 1.2 μm and 0.9 μm for slow and rapid cooling, respectively. The morphology after both slow and rapid cooling exhibits dendrites, while there are differences in the size and critical instability radius Rc, which are attributed to the different supersaturation S and the number of protrusions l. The combination of crystallographic and thermodynamic analysis indicates that solid-state dendrites only exist on the hypoeutectoid side in high-aluminum Fe-Al alloys. A large number of lattice defects in the parent phase provides an additional driving force for nucleation, leading to coherent nucleation from the interior of the parent phase grains based on the orientation relationship {3¯30}Fe5Al8//{1¯10}FeAl, <111¯>Fe5Al8//<111¯>FeAl. The maximum release of misfit strain energy leads to the preferential growth of the primary arm of the nucleus along <111¯> {1¯10}. During the rapid cooling process, a large supersaturation is induced in the matrix, driving the Al atoms to undergo unstable uphill diffusion and causing variations in the concentration gradient as well as generating constitutional undercooling, ultimately leading to morphological instability and the growth of secondary arms. The effect of the Mo contents of 1.0 wt.%, 1.5 wt.%, 2.0 wt.%, and 3.0 wt.% on the microstructures and mechanical properties of the polycrystalline superalloy with a high W content was studied. The typical dendrite morphology was observed in the high-W superalloy with different Mo contents, containing γ matrix, γ′ phase, eutectic, and MC carbide. After the heat treatment, the primary MC carbides were decomposed into M6C carbides, while a needle-like topologically close-packed (TCP) phase was formed in the alloy with high Mo content, in contrast to the other three alloys with low Mo content. The Mo addition increased the lattice parameter of the γ and γ′ phases and also changed the lattice misfits of the γ and γ′ phase lattice misfits towards a larger negative. The addition of Mo improved the yield strength at room temperature due to the solid solution strengthening and coherency strengthening. The improvement of the stress rupture lives at 975 °C/225 MPa was due to the combination of the suppressed propagation of the microcracks by the carbides and a more negative misfit. When the Mo content reached 3.0 wt.%, the TCP phases formed and decreased the ultimate tensile strength and the stress rupture lives as a result. Full article

Slowing down the coarsening of the γ′ phase and suppressing the precipitation of the topologically close-packed (TCP) phase is crucial for optimizing the creep properties of Ni-based single crystal superalloys, which are affected by the solution treatment history. In the present study, the effect of cooling rate on the morphology, size and lattice misfit of γ′ reprecipitates after solution treatment, as well as the microstructural evolution (e.g., the coarsening of γ′ reprecipitate and precipitation of the TCP phase) and creep properties of samples under different cooling rates at 1100 °C were investigated. The findings suggested that as the cooling rate increasing, the size of γ′ reprecipitates decreased, while the morphology transformed from polygonal to cubic. Additionally, faster cooling rate, on the one hand, the lower the degree of lattice misfit of γ/γ′ phases, which is beneficial to slow down the coarsening of the γ′ phase; on the other hand, the supersaturation of the γ-phase was reduced, i.e., the Mo and Re contents in the γ matrix were lower compared to the slow-cooling sample, which led to a lower TCP phase area fraction during thermal exposure at 1100 °C. It is crucial that the creep life of the alloy significantly improved by increasing the cooling rate after solution treatment; this is facilitated by the formation of rafts from finer cubic γ′ phase and reduction in the TCP phase as a source of microcracks. In conclusion, the findings of this study provide new insights into suppressing the precipitation of the TCP phase and optimizing alloy heat treatment processes to improve creep properties. The hampered kinetics of reactive hydride composites (RHCs) in hydrogen storage and release, which limits their use for extensive applications in hydrogen storage S1and energy conversion, can be improved using additives. However, the mechanism of the kinetic restriction and the additive effect on promoting the kinetics have remained unclear. These uncertainties are addressed by utilizing versatile transmission electron microscopy (TEM) on the LiBH4-MgH2 composite under the influence of the 3TiCl3·AlCl3 additives. The formation of the MgB2 phase, as the rate-limiting step, is emphatically studied. According to the observations, the heterogeneous nucleation of MgB2 relies on different nucleation centers (Mg or TiB2 and AlB2). The varied nucleation and growth of MgB2 are related to the in-plane strain energy density at the interface, resulting from the atomic misfit between MgB2 and its nucleation centers. This leads to distinct MgB2 morphologies (bars and platelets) and different performances in the dehydrogenation kinetics of LiBH4-MgH2. It was found that the formation of numerous MgB2 platelets is regarded as the origin of the kinetic improvement. Therefore, to promote dehydrogenation kinetics in comparable RHC systems for hydrogen storage, it is suggested to select additives delivering a small atomic misfit. Full article

Phase and domain structures in ferroelectric materials play a vital role in determining their dielectric and piezoelectric properties. Ferroelectric thin films with coexisting multiple domains or phases often have fascinating high sensitivity and ultrahigh physical properties. However, the control of the coexisting multiple domains is still challenging, thus necessitating the theoretical prediction. Here, we studied the phase coexistence and the domain morphology of PbTiO3 epitaxial films by using a Landau–Devonshire phenomenological model and canonic statistical method. Results show that PbTiO3 films can exist in multiple domain structures that can be diversified by the substrates with different misfit strains. Experimental results for PbTiO3 epitaxial films on different substrates are in good accordance with the theoretical prediction, which shows an alternative way for further manipulation of the ferroelectric domain structures. Three-layer iron-rich Fe3+xSi1−x/Ge/Fe3+xSi1−x (0.2 < x < 0.64) heterostructures on a Si(111) surface with Ge thicknesses of 4 nm and 7 nm were grown by molecular beam epitaxy. Systematic studies of the structural and morphological properties of the synthesized samples have shown that an increase in the Ge thickness causes a prolonged atomic diffusion through the interfaces, which significantly increases the lattice misfits in the Ge/Fe3+xSi1−x heterosystem due to the incorporation of Ge atoms into the Fe3+xSi1−x bottom layer. The resultant lowering of the total free energy caused by the development of the surface roughness results in a transition from an epitaxial to a polycrystalline growth of the upper Fe3+xSi1−x. The average lattice distortion and residual stress of the upper Fe3+xSi1−x were determined by electron diffraction and theoretical calculations to be equivalent to 0.2 GPa for the upper epitaxial layer with a volume misfit of −0.63% compared with a undistorted counterpart. The volume misfit follows the resultant interatomic misfit of |0.42|% with the bottom Ge layer, independently determined by atomic force microscopy. The variation in structural order and morphology significantly changes the magnetic properties of the upper Fe3+xSi1−x layer and leads to a subtle effect on the transport properties of the Ge layer. Both hysteresis loops and FMR spectra differ for the structures with 4 nm and 7 nm Ge layers. The FMR spectra exhibit two distinct absorption lines corresponding to two layers of ferromagnetic Fe3+xSi1−x films. At the same time, a third FMR line appears in the sample with the thicker Ge. The angular dependences of the resonance field of the FMR spectra measured in the plane of the film have a pronounced easy-axis type anisotropy, as well as an anisotropy corresponding to the cubic crystal symmetry of Fe3+xSi1−x, which implies the epitaxial orientation relationship of Fe3+xSi1−x (111)[0−11] || Ge(111)[1−10] || Fe3+xSi1−x (111)[0−11] || Si(111)[1−10]. Calculated from ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) data saturation magnetization exceeds 1000 kA/m. The temperature dependence of the electrical resistivity of a Ge layer with thicknesses of 4 nm and 7 nm is of semiconducting type, which is, however, determined by different transport mechanisms. Haynes 282 has attracted attention for casting applications in AUSC power plants due to its good creep properties. However, the market is primarily comprised of wrought Haynes 282, while the cast version is not commercially available. In this study, the microstructure of a large traditional sand cast Haynes 282 was studied from as-cast condition to long-term heat-treated condition by combining experimental data and thermodynamic calculations. The microstructure of a large cast Haynes 282 includes γ, γ’, two types of MX, M23C6 and µ phases. After standard post heat treatment, µ phases were dissolved and precipitated as M6C. The equilibrium state was achieved after 266 h aging at 788 °C, after which γ’ particles began coarsening. These kept to a spherical morphology; the smallest misfit was found with the γ matrix. Once post heat treatment was finished, MX exhibited little morphology and compositional change during the long-term isothermal aging. Grain boundary is covered by discrete M23C6 and M6C precipitates and this morphology keeps stable during isothermal aging. No presence of the needle µ phase have been found at grain boundaries after 10,000 h aging at 788 °C. All these microstructural features indicated that cast Haynes 282 could have a high thermal stability and good creep properties. Full article

In this work, the microstructural evolution and mechanical properties of new body-centered cubic (BCC)-based Al-Ti-Zr-Nb-Ta-Mo-V refractory high-entropy alloys (RHEAs) with coherent B2 precipitation are investigated. These designed alloy ingots were solid-solutionized at 1573 K for 2 h and then aged at 873 K for 24 h, in which each treatment was followed by water quenching. It was found that there exists phase separation of BCC matrix, Ti/Zr-rich BCC1 and Nb/Ta-rich BCC2 in these alloys. Moreover, ultra-fine spherical B2 nanoparticles with a size of 3~5 nm were dispersed in BCC2 matrix. These B2 nanoparticles could be coarsened up to 25~50 nm after aging and the particle morphology also changes to a cuboidal shape due to a moderate lattice misfit (ε = 0.7~2.0%). Also, Zr5Al3 phase could coexist with the B2 phase, where the difference between them is that the Ti element is enriched in B2 phase, rather than in Zr5Al3. Among them, the solutionized Al2Ti5Zr4Nb2.5Ta2.5 RHEAs exhibit good compressive mechanical property with a high yield strength of 1240 MPa and a large plasticity, which is mainly attributed to the coherent precipitation in the BCC matrix. Microstructure and mechanical properties of novel Ni-20Co-12Cr superalloys, with and without Nb addition, were systematically studied during long-term thermal exposure. With increased exposure time, the average diameter of the γ′ precipitates increased in both alloys in succession; this is more obviously observed in alloy containing 1 wt% Nb (1Nb). It is suggested that Nb increased the γ′ coarsening rate by accelerating the diffusion of Al and Nb in γ matrix. In addition, the γ′ phase fraction is increased by about 4% in 1Nb compared to the alloy without Nb (0Nb). The morphology of the γ′ phase changed from near-spherical to cuboidal shape during exposure in both alloys. Due to the increased γ/γ′ lattice misfit by Nb addition, 1Nb alloy showed an earlier tendency of shape change. Vickers hardness results revealed that the overall hardness decreased with the exposure time because the size increment of the γ′ precipitate weakened the precipitates strengthening and Orowan strengthening. Plants and animals are both important for studies in evolutionary developmental biology (EvoDevo). Plant morphology as a valuable discipline of EvoDevo is set for a paradigm shift. Process thinking and the continuum approach in plant morphology allow us to perceive and interpret growing plants as combinations of developmental processes rather than as assemblages of structural units (“organs”) such as roots, stems, leaves, and flowers. These dynamic philosophical perspectives were already favored by botanists and philosophers such as Agnes Arber (1879–1960) and Rolf Sattler (*1936). The acceptance of growing plants as dynamic continua inspires EvoDevo scientists such as developmental geneticists and evolutionary biologists to move towards a more holistic understanding of plants in time and space. This review will appeal to many young scientists in the plant development research fields. It covers a wide range of relevant publications from the past to present. Full article

The microstructure of a René 108 Ni-based superalloy was systematically investigated by X-ray diffraction, light microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and electron microscopy techniques. The material was investment cast in a vacuum and then solution treated (1200 °C-2h) and aged (900 °C-8h). The γ matrix is mainly strengthened by the ordered L12 γ′ phase, with the mean γ/γ′ misfit, δ, +0.6%. The typical dendritic microstructure with considerable microsegregation of the alloying elements is revealed. Dendritic regions consist of secondary and tertiary γ′ precipitates. At the interface of the matrix with secondary γ′ precipitates, nano M5B3 borides are present. In the interdendritic spaces additionally primary γ′ precipitates, MC and nano M23C6 carbides were detected. The γ′ precipitates are enriched in Al, Ta, Ti, and Hf, while channels of the matrix in Cr and Co. The highest summary concentration of γ′-formers occurs in coarse γ′ surrounding MC carbides. Borides M5B3 contain mostly W, Cr and Mo. All of MC carbides are enriched strongly in Hf and Ta, with the concentration relationship between these and other strong carbide formers depending on the precipitate’s morphology. The nano M23C6 carbides enriched in Cr have been formed as a consequence of phase transformation MC + γ → M23C6 + γ′ during the ageing treatment. Full article

Reproducible crystallographic features between new phase and matrix are often observed during phase transformation, including orientation relationship, interfacial orientation, morphology, and so on. The geometrical matching in the interface is the key to understanding the preferred transformation crystallography. Recently, a new geometrical method emphasizing the atomic row matching in the interface, the so-called near row matching method, has been proposed to predict the preferred orientations between two arbitrary crystals. In this work, this method originally expressed in direct space was further extended to the reciprocal space. These two methods were implemented in our free software PTClab (version 1.19). It is found that these two expressions are nearly equivalent. As the near row matching in reciprocal space could be directly measured by the diffraction patterns with transmission electron microscopy (TEM), the condition of atomic row matching would be easily identified in reciprocal space during TEM work, and could be applied to rationalize the experimental observations. Several examples in bothsmall and large misfit alloy systems are shown to apply the near tow matching method in both direct and reciprocal space. Furthermore, the row matching method is compared with other models, and there are some crucial aspects that need extra attention when being applied to prediction. Full article
